GRADUATION 2016

Principal’s Message Lehman High School

Congratulations on your milestone achievement

I

first met many of you as anxious freshman and some of you seven years ago when you entered middle school! It has been an honor to see you grow, mature, and transform into this incredible group of young men and women who will walk the stage on June 1, 2016. During our time together, we have celebrated your accomplishments at the local, regional, state, and national levels; you have brought a great deal of pride to the Lehman name. We have also cried together in times of loss, frustration, or strife. What has endeared your class, in particular, to the hearts and minds of your family at Lehman High School, is your heart. You have demonstrated compassion for each other in good and bad times. You have shown your compassion for others, even when they may not have deserved it. You

have shown compassion for yourselves in your drive to excellence. You chose the following by J.K. Rowling as your class quote: “We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.” Each of you has the strength, resilience, and creativity to change our world for the better. Some of your efforts will be easy, while others will be excruciatingly difficult. Your actions will define your impact; always believe in yourself and never give up. Know that you, the class of 2016, have made an indelible impact on me and all those present, near and far. May you have the integrity to do the right thing, even when it is not easy or popular. May you have the wisdom to know the difference. May you have the pride to make the world a better place by your contribution. Achieve excellence in all you do and be kind whenever possible because it is ALWAYS possible. THANK YOU to all of those who have supported and challenged you along the way. Best wishes for much success and happiness today and always. With much love and gratitude, Michelle Chae Your Proud Principal

GRADUATION 2016

Hays High School Valedictorian What’s up next for you (summer and beyond)? This summer I’m taking a course at ACC to get as many credits as I can before I go to Georgia Institute of Technology in the fall, where I will be studying materials science and engineering.

BONNIE VANNATTER

Age: 18 Parents: Marty & Julie Vannatter Siblings: Cynthia Vannatter, 22

What’ll you miss most about school? What I’ll miss the most is seeing my friends all the time. Since I’m moving to Atlanta, I will hardly be able to see them. What’ll you miss least about school? I won’t miss being busy all the time because of school. It’s not fun to be at school all day then spend the rest of your day doing homework!

Who is the teacher who has had the most impact on your education and/or life? I had Coach Null for two years of Chemistry and he was always challenging me to think and look at things differently. He got me to go to a women in engineering summer program at Texas A&M which definitely helped me figure out what I wanted to study. I wouldn’t be where I am today, pursuing engineering, without his help and advice. Who are three people (from any time in history) you’d like to have dinner with and why? I’d like to have dinner with Beyonce because she’s so empowering to young women and all women. Also Ryan Reynolds because he’s super funny and um ... also

other things. I think you all understand. I would also like to have dinner with President Obama because I feel like he is one president who has a big focus on investing in young people and helping to ensure our future. How would your friends describe you? They would describe me as honest, helpful and caring. How would your teachers describe you? Confident, hard working and motivated. Over the past four years, what news event has had the biggest impact on you? Since our government is so polarized, it’s

been impossible for the government to reach a decision to help students like me who will have outrageous amounts of student loans. Also open-carry on college campuses makes me concerned for my friends’ safety who will be attending UT. It really is a terrible idea. What would you change about the U.S. today if you could? I would definitely change the cost of college tuition! What’s the best advice you ever received and from whom? The best advice I’ve gotten is that your attitude changes everything. If you go into somethng with a positive outlook or start the

day with confidence, you’ll get so much more out of it. Share a piece of your advice with future graduating classes. The more work you put into something in the begining, the easier it is in the end. Hard work really does pay off! Also, I always thought engineering and STEM would be too hard for me to pursue after high school and I think a lot of people feel the same way, especially girls, but like Coach Null said to me, it is possible for everyone if you work hard and you shouldn’t shy away from something just because you’re afraid of failure. You’ll never know what you can do if you don’t try.

Hays High School Salutatorian

LOIS BRONAUGH

Age: 18 Parents: Bert Bronaugh Jr. and Vonda Bronaugh Siblings: Bert Bronaugh III, 27, John Bronaugh, 20, and sistersin-law Kristin and Kira

What’s up next for you (summer and beyond)? This summer I will be getting a job in the area to help pay for my college tuition, and after that I will be a student at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. There I plan on getting a Bachelors and Masters degree in History and English. I also will be studying abroad in Germany to sharpen my language skills and learn more about the German culture. After that I plan on finding a career that fits my interest in these subjects and keeps me challenged every day. What will you miss most about school? My friends, definitely. I’ve spent four or more years with awesome people who have given me amazing memories, and it’s hard to accept that we will be spreading out from each other across the state and country. Secondly, I know I’ll miss my teachers. They’ve

taught me so much, both about their subjects and about life in general, and I am so thankful. Although I know I will visit some of these people in the future, never again will we all be together in one place. And that’s what I’ll miss most. What will you miss least about school? I’m looking forward to being able to choose my own schedule in high school, instead of having the same, rather monotonous, routine every day. It will be great to be able to have such variety throughout the week and know that I won’t be chased by the masses if I try to go into town for lunch. Who is the teacher who had the most impact on your education and/or life? This is an extremely difficult choice. All of my teachers this year have been fantastic, and I’ve had

many more impactful teachers throughout high school. The single teacher, however, who has influenced me the most is my German teacher, Zach Zeman. In the last two years, he’s taught me about a fascinating language and culture but also has been my friend and mentor. He’s shown me that while it’s important to work hard and do well, there are times when I need to slow down and enjoy the small moments. This is a life lesson that I hope to carry in my memories forever. Thanks, or Danke, Herr Zeman! Who are the three people (from any time in history... or the present) with whom you’d like to have dinner with, and why? Firstly, my grandmother. My mom’s mother and my namesake, Lois Harrison, died before my parents even met, but her memories have lasted far beyond that. I grew up with stories about

her humor and love, and I would be so excited to meet with the person who made my mom who she is, learn her wisdom, and enjoy her beautiful personality. Secondly, C.S. Lewis. “The Chronicles of Narnia” is one of my favorite series, and I think Lewis is a witty author with a wise sense of Christianity. Finally, I would love to eat dinner with Abraham Lincoln. I respect him for his perseverance during such a trying time of American History and his ability to maintain a positive perspective despite many setbacks in his life and the trials of being president during the Civil War. How would your best friends describe you? Considerate, quirky, determined, adventurous, and imaginative. I’m also terrible at shopping and can be stubbornly insistent, but my friends are much too kind to say that aloud.

How would your teachers describe you? Inquisitive, kind, and contemplative. I may not get it right the first time, but I’m determined to correct my mistakes, even after it won’t count. Over the past four years, what news event had the biggest impact on you? The Paris attacks on November 13, 2015 really shocked me. It reminded me that tragedies can happen anywhere without warning, and it made me pay greater attention to the world as a whole. Although 9/11 happened when I was only three years old, the attacks in Paris were terribly similar, and it helped me recognize that such events could happen anywhere at any time, and that I need to be ready to help and support others when it happens. LOIS BRONAUGH, pg. 12

9 LOIS BRONAUGH, from page 6 What would you change about the United States today if you could? I would change the harsh division within the government. I believe the tension between the two parties in Congress, and the Congress and Presidency, is impractical because it represents two extreme views and prevents constructive compromise, as well as because it forces many Americans to choose a side, despite their moderate perspectives which don’t fully align with either party. Although both parties have good aspects in their policies, the refusal to compromise and see the other’s point of view ultimately inhibits progress and can harm the willingness of Americans to work together. Share a piece of advice with future graduating classes. Balance is key. Academics are important, but family and friends are, too. Make sure that if you aim to be in the top ten percent of your class or if you want to go to the coolest parties or become the greatest musician that you keep everything balanced. Grades are important and can inspire you to pursue your future, but family and friends keep you grounded to what’s around you. Prepare for the future but remember to still enjoy the now.

Thank You

What’s the best advice you have ever received and from whom? The greatest advice I have ever received cannot be copied in the form of a quote because it is the example my father has set for me through my entire life. He has shown me that although life isn’t fair and sometimes you are overwhelmed or mistreated, you simply must take a deep breath and keep working hard. Always find ways to help people and know that even when it doesn’t seem like it, God will provide a firm foundation.

Lehman High School Valedictorian What’s up next for you (summer and beyond)? In the fall, I will be attending Texas A&M University and majoring in Biology. What will you miss most about school? The daily interactions with my peers and teachers.

TENLEY LEHMAN

Age: 18 Hometown: Kyle Parents: Michael and Cassie Lehman Siblings: Michaela Lehman, 20

What will you miss least about school? I will not miss standardized and AP testing. I do not believe that a test can fully represent a student’s intelligence and abilities. Who is the teacher who had the most impact on your edcation and/ or life? There have been too many to count. Ms. Guinn,

Mr. Lucita, Mrs. Sumers, Mrs. Sears, Mrs. Sansom, Mrs. Hart, Mrs. Folsom, Mrs Hettenhausen, Mrs. Gandy and many more. I have endless gratitude for the tireless work of educators. Who are three people (from any time in history ... or the present) with whom you’d like to have dinner with, and why? I would have dinner with Dr. Tenley Albright, First Lady Michell Obama and J.K. Rowling, three women who inspire me. My name was inspired by Dr. Tenley Albright, the first American woman to earn a gold medal in figure skating, one of five women in a class of one hundred thirty five to graduate from Harvard TENLEY LEHMAN, pg. 12

What’s up next for you (summer and beyond)? I will work this summer and then go to school at Texas A&M University. My plan is to get my bachelors in architecture, studying construction science.

What’ll you miss least about school? I will definitely not miss the disrespectfulness that I see from students sometimes. I will not miss AP exams. Both bothered and stressed me out incredibly.

What’ll you miss most about school? I’ll miss all the relationships that have been built; all the people I have to leave behind in order to achieve my dreams. I’ll miss seeing the people who always made my day better, but I am glad we reached this point together. I will miss being with Star Strutters and Student Council, because they are just like family to me.

Who is the teacher who had the most impact on your education and/or life? I have multiple teachers who impacted my education and life. Mrs. Hart, my US History teacher, is my favorite because she works so hard to provide valuable education to the many students that sit in her desks. She is one of the first teachers that I KAITLIN POWELL, pg. 12

GRADUATION 2016

TENLEY LEHMAN, from pg. 11 Medical School and later a successful surgeon. I have admired First Lady Michele Obama’s commitment to the continued education of youth, a healthy lifestyle and our armed forces. I was honored to hear the First Lady speak to kick off SXSW music fest and felt empowered by her message of hope. She said that “to whom much is given, much is expected.” As the youth, we are given many tools to succeed and are expected to turn around and offer those same tools to younger generations. J.K. Rowling has helped make the world a better place, not only through her writing, but actions. She presented the opportunity for countless readers to pick up a book and read for pleasure, not requirement. She inspired me with her famous quote “It is our choices ... that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” Actions speak louder than both words and talent. How would your best friends describe you? Determined, a ray of sunshine, hard working, unique, stylish, kind, helpful,

loving, down to Earth, a leader and humble. How would your teachers describe you? A self-motivated hard worker, humble, dedicated, inspirational, focused, determined, mature, forward thinker, driven, intelligent, a person of integrity, well rounded, honest, loyal and goal-oriented. Over the past four years, what news event had the biggest impact on you? The world today lacks positivity. As I reflected on major news events, both domestically and internationally over the past four years, I found overwhelming negativity. Acts of terrorism, politics and fear of future instability plague the news. As part of today’s generation, I am impacted by the forward advancemets in science, education and technology. From cells that might cure diabetes, to the rising number of college graduates and everyday technology rapidly evolving, soon my generation will be behind it all.

What would you change about the United States today if you could? I would stop the political vitriol and regain the art of compromise. I wish the United States could truly live up to its original purpose as the melting pot and the land of freedom. What’s the best advice you have ever received, and from whom? “The greatest moments in your life often occur outside of your comfort zone.” This advice has inspired me to constantly improve myself so I may help others do the same. This was told to me by a former Lehman High School Drum Major and mentor, Sarah Williams. Share a piece of your advice with future graduating classes. Step out of your comfort zone and do not be afraid to fail. Believe in something and believe in yourself. Most importanly, remember to give back. Your success was not only the result of your doing but the help of your family, educators and people you do not even know.

KAITLIN POWELL, from pg. 11 actually talked to, because I usually sit quietly and go with the flow in most of my classes. She is a listener, a fighter, and she deserves everything good that happens to her. Mrs. Vasquez and Mrs. Curry are other teachers that always made their classes interesting. They made me appreciate life and made me want to continue to pursue whatever dream I have, no matter what the dream is. Lastly Mrs. Powell is a teacher who impacted my life deeply. She was my advisor for Student Council and supported me through the Star Strutter booster for 4 years. Mrs. Powell always takes responsibility when no one will step up, even if that responsibility means staying at work until 8-9 p.m. three days a week. These teachers made me who I am today, and I am grateful for meeting them in my last years of high school. Who are three people with whom you’d like to have dinner and why? I would like to have dinner with Maya Angelou, J. Cole and Sojourner Truth. I feel like they all have unique views on life that will make an interesting conversation. The amount of history behind each is different, but they all know what life contains. Maya Angelou wrote so

Keep your grad in the know.

many beautiful and heart wrenching or empowering poems, essays and plays. I want to experience her outlook on many social norms and life’s realities. J. Cole is a poet and storyteller on his own. “There’s beauty in the struggle”, he inspires me to appreciate every aspect of life, and I would like to talk to him personally. Sojourner Truth is a savior that supports the rights of women. Her whole life is now just a story told, but I want to hear what she actually wants to express after all the experiences that she went through. How would your best friends describe you? My friends would describe me as responsible, educated but slightly silly, mature and childish. How would your teachers describe you? My teachers would describe me as responsible, quiet and a good role model. Over the past four years, what news event had the biggest impact on you? The news event that had the biggest impact on me was the news on Shave-A-Thon two years back.

The inspiration that came through the people who showed their support for Ms. Sutten and those that battle breast cancer, was so admirable and moving. It made me proud of the people I go to school with and made me proud of the organization I was a part of. What would you change about the United States today if you could? I would want the United States to be more accepting. I do not want people to suffer over differences that make them no less human than the people around them. The imperfects of another person should be accepted as the imperfections of society. What’s the best advice you ever received and from whom? “Don’t stress over it just do your best” - 15-16 Star Strutter Officers: Catrina, Jailin and Evey Share a piece of your advice with future graduating classes. The greatest that remains inside of you can only be released or held back by you. Do not fear pain, and do not fear difficulty. Those aspects will lead you to the greatness that lays dormant inside of you.

What’s up next for you? My long-term goal is to become a certified public accountant. My shortterm goals are to get my tax preparation number and to become a notary. Currently my sister and I are setting up our own small business.

Who is the teacher who had the most impact on your education? My counselor, Mrs. Kennedy, has had the most impact on my education. She has influenced my future education by helping me and my sister be able to go to college.

What will you miss most about school? What I will miss most about school are the small out-of-topic conversations the teachers and students would have. The conversations would range from childhood experiences to favorite artists, but it was the connection that matters – a connection of shared experiences that we feel nostalgic about as we grow up.

Who are three people you’d like to have dinner with? Three people that I would like to have to dinner are Nikola Tesla, Andrew Jackson and John the Baptist. I think there are many questions I would like to ask all these individuals about their lives. Tesla was an extraordinary inventor and Andrew Jackson had a very unique perspective toward the Federal Reserve. I always had curiosity about John the Baptist and about how even the greatest politicians respected him. He is a very admirable person and a very religious figure. I think I will be able to learn so much from all these individuals, both religiously and secularly.

What will you miss least about school? This one’s easy. What I will miss least about school are the early Monday mornings and the cold cafeteria lunch.

How would your best friends describe you? My closest friends would describe me as someone who is loud and who is always making cheesy jokes. How would your teachers describe you? My teachers would describe me as someone who is shy, determined and has a bright mind. What are three things in the news over the past four years that have had an impact on you? Three things that have been in the news that have had a great impact on me include the delinquency in Mexico, the death of a student of a school near mine, and the fatal use of force by the police. How would you change the United States today? I would change the United States today by changing the legal age when someone becomes an adult. I would

change it to 19 years of age. There are several problems I wish to change but know it is impossible to do so. I think if teens had a least one more year to spend with their parents than that would make a great difference in the U.S. There is no better person to teach the next generation about life than those who gave it to them. What is the best advice you have ever received? The best piece of advice I have received was given to me by my mom. She told me that anything is possible if I work hard enough, think smart enough and pray often. Share a piece of advice with future graduating classes. Think for yourself. Don’t think for others and don’t let others think for you. In everything you do, always try to be different. Four years are nothing compared to the seventy you have left. Hard times will pass and if others have made it through so can you.
