JAMES PATRICK COLLINS

Age 17 Hometown: Buda Parents: Jim Norman Collins and Patricia Luisa Collins Siblings: Robert Clayton Collins, 13, Dahlstrom Middle School

What’s up next for you (summer and beyond)? I’m playing saxophone in a symphonic band in Europe this June. It’s both exciting and terrifying. It’s my first big trip out of the country, and I have the sneaking suspicion that I’ll revert to talking in a southern drawl every time I try to interact with a barista or cab driver. Beyond that, I plan to work parttime this summer and start classes at the University of Texas at Austin this fall. I’ll start out concentrating in government as well as core texts and literature. I intend to continue pursuing my interests and hobbies, including graphic design, typography, hiking, music, and art history. I look forward to integrating myself in the community and

becoming an active volunteer and leader in student and local organizations. What’ll you miss most about school? I’ll miss my group of friends, the teachers that are determined to make a difference (and, thus, make us struggle), and the counselors that go out their way to help their students. What’ll you miss least about school? The infatuation with STEM curriculum, the testing, and the emphasis on conformity. Who is the teacher who has had the most impact on your education and/ or life? There are many, but Mrs. COLLINS, pg. 6

Hays High School Salutatorian What’s up next for you (summer and beyond)? I plan to attend Lamar University to double major in Civil Engineering and Mathematics as well as play baseball for the Cardinals.

REID JOHNSON

Age 18 Hometown: Buda Parents: Richard Johnson and Sandra Johnson Siblings: Kurt Johnson, 16, Jack C. Hays; Bret Johnson, 14, Dahlstrom Middle School

What’ll you miss most about school? The thing I will miss most about high school is my Calculus 2 class, because of the challenging yet interesting material we learned. I will also miss the comradery we had, struggling through homework together as well as the bonding we had working on projects together. What’ll you miss least about school? The thing I won’t miss is trying to navigate the crowded hallways in between classes.

Who is the teacher who had the most impact on your education and/or life? The teacher who had the most influence on me was Mr. Spiller. Math has always been my favorite subject, and he helped foster that love by making math fun and interesting. He also coached the UIL academic math team in which I was a participant. Who are three people (from any time in history or the present) you’d like to have to dinner – and why? The three people that I would like to have dinner with are Thomas Jefferson, because he showed extreme courage when he wrote the Declaration of Independence which he JOHNSON, pg. 6

GRADUATION 2015 COLLINS, from pg. 5

Hats off to you, Class of 2015!

Kerri Espinoza stands out in my memories as being the most positive, dedicated, and inspiring teacher I’ve ever had. She champions all students and works tirelessly to provide us with the greatest opportunities that she can. Plus, she’s my goto for restaurants to try and places to hike in Austin. Who are three people (from any time in history) you’d like to have dinner with, and why? 1) Vincent Van Gogh. He epitomizes Impressionism and revolutionized art. After watching the episode of Doctor Who that features him, I just want to be his friend. 2) Margaret Atwood. The Handmaid’s Tale and Oryx and Crake are two critical and prophetic books that draw movements and trends to their extreme ends. I feel like dinner with her would be more like an erie fortunetelling session than a meal. 3) Nick Offerman. The man is a twentyfirst century woodworker. He’s Ron Swanson. Look him up. Watch Parks and Rec. I can’t do him justice.

How would your friends describe you? Somewhat accurately. How would your teachers describe you? More accurately than I would. Over the past four years, what news event has had the biggest impact on you? The Boy Scouts of America upholding their discriminatory policies against gay adults. As a longtime Boy Scout and supporter of gay rights, it was an event that pitted two of my beliefs against each other. I felt ostracized when I realized that, among my fellow Scouts, my opinion was (overwhelmingly) the minority and unpopular one. What would you change about the US today if you could? I would increase our policymakers’ focus on sustainability. We’re at a point where, as a culture, we must transition from one way of life to another and engage

in thoughtful examination of American society as a whole. As the global population continues to grow, allocation of resources and implementation of technologies will determine the quality of life for many in the future. The US has the ability to mitigate future poverty, education gaps, and public health crises by entertaining and enacting forwardthinking and impactconscious policies and programs. What’s the best advice you ever received and from whom? “You’ll go exactly where you are needed” is something many of my teachers, counselors, and friends have told me. At a time where the details of my future are unclear, this phrase has become a bit of a mantra to ward off stress and anxiety. Share a piece of your advice with future graduating classes. Whatever you are, be a good one.

knew was treason. Jackie Robinson, because of his struggle, being the first African American person to play in the major league, and Martin Luther King Jr. because of how he found the strength to stand for civil rights even amidst the consant threats on his life. How would your best friends describe you? My friends would describe me as a laid back guy most of the time. However, I can get serious if the situation calls for it, and I will always try my best to help people if I can. How would your teachers describe you? My teachers would (hopefully) describe me as a dedicated student who is always eager to learn and will do the work necessary to succeed. Over the past four years, what news event had

biggest impact on you? While this isn’t in the last four years, Hurricane Katrina had the biggest impact on me because I learned of all the safety features that failed and that people were not prepared for this event. This influenced my career decision because I want to become a civil engineer, and they, among other things, build structures that are designed to withstand extreme weather. I hope to be able to make a contribution in this area so that future catastrophic events will not imperil so many people. What would you change about the United States today if you could? The thing that I would like to change about the United States today is the selfish attitudes of people. Looking out for yourslef first has been ingrained in our culture, and I feel if we put others first, instead of being consumed with

our wants, it would greatly advance our society. What’s the best advice you ever received and from whom? Coach Null told me that all the good things in life are highly contested. This is the best advice I have received because it helped me realize that no one was going to give me anything and that I am entitled to nothing. I have to earn everything I get and outwork others in order to get it. Share a piece of your advice with future graduating classes: The advice for future graduating classes I have is to join something. High school is a stressful time and going through it with friends and people to whom you relate can ease that burden as well as add a vital element of fun to your life.

GRADUATION 2015

Principal’s Message Lehman High School

Stay faithful on your quest

O

ver a decade ago, you took your first steps into a school. There was excitement along with some trepidation. As you finish your years in public education, you may have some of these same feelings. For some of you the journey to this point may have come fairly easily. For others, it took a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. Whatever path brought you to this moment, you made it and for that, I congratulate YOU and all those who supported and challenged you along the way. Now you embark on the next phase of your journey that can be terrifying and thrilling at the same time.

It is both my hope and challenge that you explore, try new things, step out of your comfort zone, believe in yourself, and never give up. May you have the integrity to do the right thing, even when it is difficult or unpopular. May you have the wisdom to know the difference. And may you have the pride to make the world a better place because you are in it. Your success is in your hands. Be willing to work hard and be willing to fail, but then pick yourself back up and try again…and again… and again. Set your aspirations high and don’t stop until you reach them. Best wishes to each of you and THANK YOU sincerely for reinforcing in me the value of patience, listening, and persistence. Continue to make the lives you touch better because they have known you. Never forget to be compassionate with yourself and others, because the hand you help today may be the one helping you tomorrow. With much love and gratitude, Michelle Chae, Principal

What’s up next for you (summer and beyond)? I will be attending the University of Texas at Austin. I would like to major in Biology and Spanish, which will aid in my journey to becoming a doctor. I will continue working and volunteering at our local New Haven Assisted Living and Memory Care facility. By pursuing this career path, I plan on being an active member of my community. One who helps those in need and is qualified to do so. My education will benefit the community as well as our world. What’ll you miss most about school? I will miss being able to rely solely on my parents and turn to them whenever I need; Not

paying bills is also a plus. Having to grow up in a matter of months is going to be overwhelming. I will always have pictures and memories to remind me of the late night hangouts talking with friends about crazy drama and just eating our feelings away. What’ll you miss least about school? Stress. Wondering. I will definitely not miss the amount of workload that was assigned throughout high school and the stress that came with it. Late nights studying and finishing homework will also not be missed. These last two years, what added to my stress was having to wonder about my future. Being settled

Age 18 Hometown: Kyle Parents: Eulojio Sosa Jr. and Dora Sosa Siblings: Phoebe Sosa, 20, University of Texas at Austin; Caleb Sosa,16, Lehman High School

What’s up next for you (summer and beyond)? I have followed the medical cluster offered at my high school, and hopefully I earn my certification as a pharmacy technician and EMT and obtain a job as a pharmacy tech. I intend to continue volunteering at Seton Medical Center Hays and to progress in finishing a novel I am writing. Additionally, I will set aside plenty of time to sleep, eat, dance in my room to music, and do nothing during summer. I am majoring in biology at UT Austin in the fall and after this I will pursue medical school, and subsequently follow a path to becoming a thoracic surgeon.

What’ll you miss most about school? I will definitely miss planning and hosting fundraisers at the school. Through being a junior class officer and HOSA officer, I sincerely enjoyed raising funds for great causes. It was taxing, but being in a part of fundraisers for Shave-AThon, NHS, and the Class of 2015, I learned how to converse with strangers at ease. Albeit fun, donating funds that our school raised made me feel like I was positively impacting my community, and I hope to replicate that again. What’ll you miss least about school? SOSA, pg. 12

GRADUATION 2015

VASQUEZ, from pg. 11 in a university will be a nice change; I no longer have to wonder. Who is the teacher who had the most impact on your education and/or life? Caring for the student’s emotional, physical and mental state is not part of the typical teacher duties but Mrs. Vasquez made it hers. The aspect I love the most about Mrs. Vasquez is her laugh and positive spirit. She was always able to lift me up even in the worst of times. She taught me to embrace my Hispanic heritage and to be proud of my background. Who are three people (from any time in history or the present) you’d like to have to dinner – and why? I would not just like to have dinner with Abraham Lincoln, Alexander the Great and Eleanor Roosevelt but I would like to have breakfast and lunch with these historical figures too. To ‘Honest Abe’ I would ask him what he would have done different during Reconstruction and how he thinks that would of altered history. Alexander the Great would be a great person to ask about tactics and his leadership roles. And finally, Eleanor Roosevelt, it would be an honor to meet this lady because she has come to define what it means to be the First Lady of the United States and a true example to all women. How would your best friends describe you? Viewing my morality, my personality, and my values, I could easily tell you what

SOSA, from pg. 11 kind of person I feel that I am. Often, though, it is hard to tell what others think about you, even your closest friends. In evaluating this question, I had a realization that I should ask what my best friends think of me, and the results were somewhat surprising. My best friends view me as a role model. Someone to look up to who has it “all together” sports, family, friends, academics. They view me as “sassy, fearless, hardworking, wholehearted, and genuine”, all aspects I found amusing to hear. It is interesting, and a blessing, to know that the people I love the most think highly, and humorously, of me. How would your teachers describe you? “Qualities of Ofelia when I think of who she is: passionate about her life and family, sincere, humble, goaloriented, athletic, and compassionate towards her family and friends.” –Mrs. Vasquez Over the past four years, what news event had biggest impact on you? The loss of my former classmate, teammate and friend altered my life in ways I can’t even begin to explain. Gabriella Montoya was the spirit of the Lehman 2015 class. Her absence throughout senior year has been excruciating. Her loss taught me to never take life and people for granted. Walking the stage without her is crazy to think of. Her memory will always be in my heart and in the Lehman 2015 class. I am content to say that her legacy will forever live on, thanks to

her tenacious family and friends. What would you change about the United States today if you could? One of the hardest questions I have stumbled across. I am happy to say that there are not a lot of things that I would change about the United States; our nation must be doing something right. What I would change is the cost of college tuition. Instead of encouraging students to further their education this is discouraging students from persevering. The cost of attendance should not be an obstacle to reaching our full potential. What’s the best advice you ever received and from whom? The best advice I ever received was from my father when I was an adolescent. He said to me “Take one step at a time.” This advice has followed me throughout my high school career and always kept me focused. I was able to breathe when thinking of his words; they always seemed to make life a little less stressful. Thank you, daddy. Share a piece of your advice with future graduating classes: To the future graduating class I would advise them to stay focused, and do not lose sight of your dreams. To keep your priorities straight and also find time to relax and absorb the full high school experience. High school is supposed to prepare you for college and life; do not get overwhelmed nor let it destroy you. This is only the beginning.

The stress! All of the all-nighters, lack of sleep, balancing academics, extra curricular activities, volunteering, a social and family life, etcetera, gave me an immense pressure that was a true struggle. I am grateful to leave that behind. Who is the teacher who had the most impact on your education and/or life? Ms. Sansom – she has taught me how to love a subject, that is, biology. She cares not only if her students learn, but about how they are doing in life. She always listens to her students and displays her love openly. Also, she’s extremely goofy and funny – she makes sound effects when she is teaching! Who are three people (from any time in history or the present) you’d like to have to dinner – and why? Jesus Christ – I have a lot of questions for that guy! Malala Yousafzai – she is an inspiration, a young world leader who worked so hard in dispersing education and its power. I would love to talk to and learn from her. Mahatma Gandhi – he moved the world and taught us so much, and his views and values would enlighten me. How would your best friends describe you? “Motivated, sarcastic, independent, self-aware…” –Jackie Hermosillo and Andrea Alegria How would your teachers

describe you? “Intelligent, leader, confident, witty, humble, empathetic, loyal, goaloriented…” –Haylie Sansom Over the past four years, what news event had biggest impact on you? The past few years it seems as though it has been wave after wave of police shootings that resulted in turmoil. These issues undeniably caught my attention; the controversy, the misinformation, and the brave people who have ignited movements have made me feel as though I have been watching history lay out before me. This is what will be in textbooks in the future – and it is our responsibility to make sure that it is the truth that is written and perpetuated, that nothing is misconstrued. What would you change about the United States today if you could? In every region of the United States, there still lies prejudice. Whether it is over religion, gender, race, sexuality, socioeconomic status, education, there are limits to our tolerance and unity. It’s a big, unrealistic wish—but I truly desire for people to work together to halt the oppression against minorities. There are always groups of people that work towards this, but it needs to be widescale, starting with spreading awareness and education, especially to the youth, because it is the youth that will soon be the ones altering America’s future.

What’s the best advice you ever received and from whom? The best advice I’ve ever gotten is when I was going through a rough period of self-hatred. This was before I had accepted myself. My friend stood by me and told me to love myself and to not care what others thought of me. Sure, in some matters, you definitely should care about how you’re perceived, but for the majority, she told to be myself, and to appreciate it, because no one else could be me. This reinforcement planted the seeds for my confidence – and slowly transformed me into who I am today. I’m quirky, loud, sarcastic, and maybe even obnoxious, but I’m also caring, geeky, inquisitive, and ambitious. And it’s okay. I can finally say to myself that being the way that I am – is okay. Share a piece of your advice with future graduating classes: If you are given an opportunity to pursue your passion, do something you love, or to just do something fun, take it. No one enjoys wondering what could have been, regret haunting you. That being said, your life needs to be as balanced as it can be. There can’t be too much focus on one thing, because everything else will be neglected. Know your limits. If you work yourself too hard, you may snap. Similarly, things cannot get put off, or else they overwhelm you. Deadlines—try to meet them ahead of time. Most importantly, don’t procrastinate!

To the Class of 2015 ... You Rule!

This is a Message to Everyone at Hays High School I want to express my deepest gratitude and sincere appreciation to all of the students, teachers, coaches, parents, and administrators of Hays High School who made my son’s days there awesome and amazing. You all have made and continue to make a difference in people’s lives. How very lucky and blessed we have been because of YOU! To All of the Football Players: High school is hard enough for a “normal” student, but can you imagine going to high school with a disability? You don’t fit in, you are made fun of, ostracized, and bullied. It’s a constant struggle to be accepted and valued. Usually, football players are not only known to shun someone with a disability, but rarely do they pay them any attention, and more often than not, look down on them as a lower class citizen. It just isn’t cool to do otherwise. But not at Hays High School you guys are the best of the best, the cream of the crop! You have been understanding, encouraging, and helpful, and have included my son in your circle, with your team, and in your hearts. I want you to know that that is rare, and I for one, have never taken that for granted. I have been truly amazed at your thoughtfulness and willingness to include my son with you on the field. He has not only enjoyed, but has looked forward to going to school each day – and it is all because of you (well, and maybe the High Steppers!) I will always be grateful to you for all of the happiness and joy you have brought to my son. You have been his J.J. Watt.

To the Football and Track Coaches: Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. You allowed my son to be a part of your team, and made him feel important. You let him be a part of the pre-game warm-ups, pep rallies, and on the sidelines. You allowed him to help be a team motivator, and let him run through the tunnel! You deserve recognition for being an example in patience, tolerance, and inclusion. To All of the High Steppers: All of you beautiful and talented women have shown my son unending kindness and friendship, and what guy wouldn’t walk tall because of that! Letting my son sit with you at the football games was one of the highlights for him – half-time could never get there fast enough! To All of the Band Members and Directors: You have embraced my son from the time he was in middle school, and I have some awesome pictures to prove it! I can’t count the number of times you let my son climb the ladder, speak into the microphone, and direct the band. How cool is that!! He was overjoyed time and time again at the football games (as well as pep rallies). And the students were so patient with him, letting him sit with them, and even play their drums! Those are some amazing kids led by truly kind and caring band leaders. I can’t tell you how much that meant to him (and me). You just have no idea.

To All of the Teachers: I can’t thank you enough for taking care of my son, helping him prepare for the homecoming court (twice), and letting him do special things with others outside of class, and for all of the pictures, and video you took of him when I couldn’t leave work. Those are the things I will remember. To All of the Students: You acted towards my son like he was a rock star, smiling at him, calling out his name, giving him high-fives, and taking pictures with him. That is how I felt, anyway, like I was with a rock star because of how you reacted when you would see him. To All of the Parents: You are to be commended on raising your children right. It’s obvious you taught them to treat everyone with kindness and respect, and they not only listened, but they acted upon that. You have even picked him up on numerous occasions to take him to football and baseball games. Kudos to you! Last, but not least, my son’s experiences would have NEVER happened without the support of the administrators. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Without your support and cooperation, none of my son’s incredible experiences in high school would have been possible. Thank you ALL so very much. Sincerely, Karen Sacratini (Ben Buslett’s mom) & Family
