t’s been many years since the Hays Free Press has had so many people participate in our keepsake Graduation Editon. But this is not a typical year. With the Coronavirus wreaking havoc with everyone’s lives, it’s hard to figure out what is normal – or even if normal will ever be the same. There are a lot of people who helped make this edition special, and we’d like to thank them. First, Public Information Officer Tim Savoy and his team at Hays CISD headquarters have helped spread the word throughout the district to parents of seniors, letting them know that this edition was coming out. David Bowe got us emails, Moses Leos III helped with photos. And we don’t even know to whom else at central administration we owe a thanks. So, please accept our gratitude. We also need to note that HCISD Superintendent Dr. Eric Wright has helped by being open to the idea of this joint effort. We hope we can do more in the future together to show what a great place Hays CISD is. Dr. Wright and the high school officials also helped form teams to make sure that seniors this year are given special treatment. Look at the signs everywhere, congratulating graduation seniors. Look at the vehicle parades going on. Everywhere you look, the community that is Hays CISD is trying to make sure that students know they are special and that they know they will become leaders in just a few years. We look toward these young people going out and getting jobs and supporting families. Who knows what they will do? Go to college, take government leadership, invent something, work in technology, education, science, writing, communications, become an electrician, a plumber, a truck driver. No matter what, rest assured that we will be hearing about the COVID seniors in years to come. They have endured and they know how to face adversity. And, finally, thanks to all of the parents without whom we could not have put this together. They found the old photos, got their messages sent and paid to have their seniors in this edition to make it a special keepsake. So, to the parents, graduates, teachers and Hays CISD employees, “great job.” Wear your masks, keep a safe distance between each other, and know that we will come out of this. In the meantime, we give all of you a thank you “virtual” hug.

Dear Lehman High Schoo Class of 2020, I am proud to announce the Graduating Lehman High School Class of 2020. It was an honor and a pleasure to serve as your Proud, PROUD Principal this past year. Despite any circumstances this spring, this has been an AMAZING school year, and please know that uncertainty cannot ever take this achievement away. During this challenging time, you have altered your plans and set new expectations. Through doing that, you have acquired new skills and increased your resiliency. With those new skills, you will continue to persevere, remain focused on your goals, and demonstrate your grit that will take you far in life. You have worked hard to accomplish this endeavor. Your strength, as well as the knowledge and skills you have received, will guide you in your future life and career. You have also established lasting and meaningful friendships that will bring you both gratification and support in the years to come. Even though this is the end of your high school years, this is just the beginning of your life. You are not just high school graduates. You are Lehman High School Lobo graduates. You can do absolutely anything you set your mind to. You are Lobo Strong! Congratulations to this extraordinary group, the Lobo Class of 2020, on earning your high school diplomas. Congratulations Live Oak 2020 graduates, What an exciting time for all of you! I know I speak for everyone at Live Oak when I say we are proud of you and happy to have this opportunity to celebrate all of your successes. This school year has been unlike any other, as we all do at Live Oak, you have persevered and overcame the adversity and obstacles that 2020 brought upon all of us. Live Oak is a unique experience and we are happy to have had the opportunity to share that experience with you. Each of you took a different path to graduation, but in the end, you have all achieved success and you are a graduate of Live Oak Academy. In the words of actress Kerry Washington, “Your life is your story, and the adventure ahead of you is the journey to fulfill your own purpose and potential.” The world out there is changing, be a part of that change and make it a better place for all of us. As the lawyer and ethics speaker Michael Josephson said, “Take pride in how far you’ve come. Have faith in how far you can go. But don’t forget to enjoy the journey.” I believe that this journey will be not be an end, but the beginning of an exciting and rewarding adventure for each of you. Let this accomplishment serve as a springboard for your next endeavor. Congratulations, we are proud of you! Sincerely, Doug Agnew, Principal Live Oak Academy

I
am honored to have the chance to speak to you, my fellow Class of 2020 graduates and supporters, although I certainly wish it was in person. In what are traditionally the most exciting weeks of high school, we have been handed a unique challenge that will inevitably change how we view our high school experience. Whether it be your last concert, baseball season, debate tournament, spring show, banquet, or senior prom, we all have our own individual stories of despondency; of classic high school memories we will never get to live out. We have a right to be disappointed that this coronavirus pandemic has robbed us of those unique moments of recognition and celebration. It is okay to be heartbroken about all of this, but it is how we choose to respond, how we choose to act, that will define who we are and how we will be remembered. Like many of you, I have found it difficult

to roll out of bed some mornings and be productive while in quarantine. It is important, though, to put these feelings into perspective and be thankful every day for the blessings we have been given. Whether it be a loving family, supportive friends, dedicated teachers, good health, or simply just another day on this earth, we all have something to be thankful for. Through this gratitude, we can come to recognize the extent of our blessings, learn to sympathize with others who may be less fortunate during these difficult times, and find ways to help them with random acts of kindness. Whether it be running errands for an elderly couple in your neighborhood, calling a friend who may be struggling emotionally, or simply thanking a health care worker for their heroism, I challenge all of you to find ways to help ease the burdens of our community. No act is too small. In this way, perhaps we can find a purpose in these
unprecedented times and focus more on how we can help others rather than on what has been lost. When we look back on this pandemic years later, we will be glad that we tried our best to be positive and used that positivity to stand with others in need. I truly hope that these will not be the last words I get to share with you before we all head out on our own individual journeys. Let us continue to have faith that this affliction too shall pass so that we can come together and celebrate our perseverance in June. Most importantly, however, we must keep those who have been personally affected by this virus in our prayers and continue to make healthy choices as we look out for the safety of others. It has been a pleasure getting to know many of you over the years and I can not wait to see what wonderful things will result from the hard work and talents of the Class of 2020. God bless you all and stay safe.

“W
elcome”. Were you at my graduation ceremony, that is the first word you would hear me say, so there is my attempt to preserve authenticity for you. I say that because the current situation that led the newspaper to ask me for a speech has forced me to question the purpose behind the speech I am giving. It turns out that purpose is to welcome people to the graduation which becomes a much less important role in the absence of a graduation. But, it also forced me to find a deeper meaning in the speech, something I could leave to the people reading it in the paper. For me, the speech has come to symbolize the power of a moment. The valedictorian looks back on our memories and looks ahead to our futures, which leaves the salutatorian with the piece in the middle: the moment. This revelation helped me understand why I was struggling so much to write a speech without an in-person graduation. There was no real shared moment to address, nothing to speak about

honestly to the present reader. I couldn’t create something that fulfilled what I now know is the purpose of the salutatorian speech. Now, however, graduation is back on. I am relieved, but even more perplexed. How could I write a salutatorian speech for an audience who are not all experiencing the same thing at the same time? Well, I figured it could be a different kind of “welcome”, a welcome to a new reality that is touching each of our lives. We are living in a shared moment whether or not we realize it: it is the moment in which we must reevaluate our lives as we lose so much, and as our world around us changes drastically. So let me be the first to say, welcome. Welcome to this baffling, challenging, painful, beautiful new world. Welcome to the next chapter of life. I suppose that if I am to be the one to welcome you to this new reality, I should know my way around the place. For me, these past eight weeks have been a constant cycle of anger, sorrow, regret, joy, and then anger again. Through
these cycles I have been observing: observing the world around me, observing my own mental patterns, and I’ve picked up a few insights about the place to which I welcome you that I’d like to share. The first of these is that perspective is everything. I’m not going to preach to you that someone always has it worse and you should be grateful and blah blah blah, but I do think that we are being provided with a different sort of space for reflection, should we choose to accept it. The second of these is that we must continue to be alive in the face of hardship. Life cannot be postponed until things are pleasant again. Especially with indefinite circumstances, it is important to seek out the things that continue to make our lives worth living in the moment we exist in (in true salutatorian fashion). I’m coming up on the word count quickly, but I look forward to welcoming you all to our final moment together. It is the precursor to millions of more moments that I can’t wait to march towards with you.
Brooklyn Davey Congratulations to our sweet Brooklyn on your High School graduation. We are so proud of all your hard work and dedication over the years to get to this point. y name is Arlyne McKown, and I am proud to be the Lehman High School Class of 2020 Valedictorian. I know that this year has not ended as we expected, and as a class, we have missed out on many milestones that we have looked forward to for years, including prom, awards ceremonies, the senior trip, and most of all, graduation. However, I have seen our perseverance and support from the community, and I know that our accomplishments mean so much to us and our loved ones. Congratulations to all of our seniors who have worked hard for this moment. I’m sorry that we cannot celebrate as we planned, but I know that every single one of us has the potential to achieve our goals in life. nothing in the world can beat a person with a strong work ethic and something to prove. I know that our class has exemplified this and will continue to do so. I am so proud of how far we have come, and our experiences will only help us grow into confident and capable adults. I want to thank everyone who has supported me over the past several years and stuck by my side even as I panicked over grades less than 95 and stressed about the thought of being unprepared for a test or quiz. I know that most of my peers have had unwavering confidence in my abilities as a student, so I put even more pressure on myself, but over the past few years I’ve come to realize that all of us make mistakes - no one can be perfect, regardless of how hard we try. This is important for everyone to understand. Mistakes are inevitable, but it’s what we learn from them that

matters. I’ve learned from my mistakes, and because of that, I am able to take responsibility for my actions and improve my skills at school and in my personal and professional life. Throughout high school, I participated in NHS and FFA. Through these organizations, I learned the importance of hard work and leadership. My time in FFA taught me how to lead a group of my peers as well as how to manage a busy schedule, including school, extracurriculars, my part time job at Famous Footwear, and my internship at Deep Roots Animal Clinic. My experiences in school shaped me into the young adult I am today, and I hope that all of the Class of 2020 can say the same. Thank you to everyone for making the past 13 years memorable, especially all of my teachers who have supported me unconditionally. Good luck to all of my peers in your future endeavors. ello friends, family, and fellow graduates, my name is Angela Lopez, and this year I have the privilege of being Lehman High School’s Class of 2020 Salutatorian. I want to thank every board member, teacher, staff member, and school administrator for making this possible for each of us. During this time, I especially want to thank my mother, who’s overcome many obstacles to raise both my sister and me on her own, my sister, who has been my best friend for the past 17 years, my grandmother, who’s been like a second mother to me, and of course, my friends, who’ve struggled with me through every test, assignment and fire alarm. Through thick and thin, they’ve all been there supporting me the whole way, cheering me on after every accomplishment and encouraging me to try again after every failure. Without question, 2020 has not been the year any of us expected. However, this time of uncertainty has allowed me to put many things into perspective, to see how truly resilient our class has been and to see how no matter what obstacle has been placed in our path we’ve surpassed expectations. As students from Lehman High School, others believe they can set boundaries for our success, but what we can and will do is limitless. As our lives take off from this moment forward and we begin new journeys of our own, may we learn from these experiences to continue to work hard and to be successful in all that we set our minds to. Despite the odds of being first-generation, Latina, raised by a single mother, and a woman entering STEM, I’m able to say

that I did it. Able to say that I’ve done what statistics say I couldn’t have and that I’ve overcome all of the obstacles and doubts placed in my path, including ones I’ve created on my own. There are so many other stories like mine among us, stories of perseverance, hard work, and success, and I know that each one of us will continue to write our own stories with our current situation being yet another important chapter of our lives. In the future, we’ll look back and be able to use this time as a reminder of all that we can and have accomplished despite the many unexpected setbacks.
Dear Sid, We could not be more proud of the wonderful person you have become. We also couldn’t give you better advice than all of the outrageously intelligent people who have come before us. So from them to us to you… “Nothing can dim the light that shines from within,” believed Maya Angelou, so whatever you do, “wherever you go, go with all your heart,” said Confucius. More importantly, “don’t wait. The time will never be just right” insisted Mark Twain. “Now go, and make interesting mistakes, make amazing mistakes, make glorious and fantastic mistakes. Break rules. Leave the world more interesting for you being here. Make good art,” proclaimed Neil Gaiman. Whatever you choose and however you get there, we will forever be by your side with all our love. –Mom and Dad

Live Oak Academy Honor Graduate Zoe Elizabeth Sharkey T
o say “we made it'' doesn't exactly feel right this year. I feel like I can speak on behalf of all my fellow class of ‘20 seniors when I say this isn’t quite what I expected; especially after all the years I dreamt of this moment. With our traditional graduation ceremony postponed and senior prom completely cancelled, it would be easy to say that our senior year was unfulfilling. However, it is my belief that this catastrophe among us has created an opportunity for personal and inter-personal growth for each and every one of us -- students, parents, educators, and staff alike. First, I would like to thank the teachers and staff that have allowed us to get to this moment. I personally didn’t get to spend much time at LOA, but in my four months of attendance I was able to make a lot of new friendships and experience things that would shape me into who I am today. I felt so much more comfort-
able at school to a point where Live Oak was like my second home -- and everyone there was my second family. Though I’m thankful to have graduated preceding all this chaos that is our world right now, I praise the efforts and sacrifices in time and energy that these mentors have made to adjust to our current social climate. Above all else, I’m thankful to have felt so accepted in so little time by my peers and educators. Our school consists not only of staff who are determined to encourage us to make the most of our education, but staff who genuinely care about each and every one of their students. Next I would like to recognize our parents and parental figures for their never ending love and support. Our parents are constantly sacrificing so much so we can live a comfortable, successful adult life. Without their guidance and motivation, most of us wouldn’t be here today. Though we will spend our last days as seniors cooped up at

home, finding our own ways to celebrate the accomplishments we’ve made and the huge milestone that is highschool graduation, I encourage my peers to spend time thinking about what they are thankful for, especially those things which may have been previously taken for granted. I also encourage them to spend this time to reward themselves, and most importantly, to focus on growth and mental health. There’s no doubt in my mind that we as a class have truly had a senior year like no other. As I sit here writing this in the comfort of my own home, watching the heavy rain pour outside with the warmth of a purring kitty on my lap, I am able to reflect on my life this past year and identify the ways in which I have been able to grow personally during these trying times. Seeing the world through an entirely new lens has allowed me to cherish the little things and realize that every moment counts.
Evan, Your brilliant future has now begun! Love, Grandma and Grandpa C
