Farmers Market manager fired over ongoing issues

County launches jail dashboard BY SAHAR CHMAIS

BY MEGAN WEHRING DRIPPING SPRINGS — A local farmers market manager was fired last week after failing to perform duties in a professional manner. The employment of Dripping Springs Farmers Market Manager Lauren Robertson was terminated on March 16 for insubordination, discourteous behavior and ineffective communication with staff and the public. Performance issues continued to occur despite Robertson being asked to improve her communication style. City council unanimously voted on March 16 to approve the termination. Robertson did not provide comment when asked twice during the meeting. Dripping Springs is currently accepting applications to fill the position.

Residents sound off against commissioners, county officials BY MEGAN WEHRING

HAYS COUNTY — Residents are not staying quiet during public meetings. Issues surrounding county spending and government decisions and continue to emerge during Hays County Commissioners Court meetings – and Tuesday was no different. Lloyd O’Leary did not shy away from disputing Judge Ruben Becerra’s actions. “Your behavior with elected county officials

is ridiculous,” O’Leary lashed. “Because if somebody does not agree with you, you blackball them. You want to cut their budgets and I think it is very disrespectful on your part.” Dan Lyon, who is in regular attendance, was the first to speak against how the county distributes funds. “You do not care how much it costs for the people of Hays County as long as you get your cut,” Lyon said. Lyon added that another Amazon facility

in San Marcos will not bring the diverse jobs that residents were promised. “What ever happened to the aerospace and aeronautical jobs we were promised,” Lyon questioned. “I would call this bait and switch. Congratulations, San Marcos. You are quickly becoming America’s sweatshop.” Rodrigo Amaya agreed that the county needs to cut spending, even if that means not approving every item on the agenda every week. Amaya conclud-

ed that local government officials need to be completely transparent with residents. Commissioners do not take action during the public comment period. Residents can submit the necessary public comment form upon arrival to the clerk in the courtroom prior to 9 a.m. the day of the meeting. If residents will not be in attendance, forms can be emailed to publiccomments@co.hays. tx.us no later than 5 p.m. the evening prior.

HAYS COUNTY – Residents and community activists have been pushing for Hays County Jail transparency, and commissioners listened. The county has launched an online dashboard detailing who is in the Hays County Jail. The dashboard, provided in partnership with the nonprofit Vera Institute for Justice, includes the charge class, gender, race, length of stay, bond amount, age group and more. County Commissioner Lon Shell (R), said the criminal justice system is one of the most costly systems in a county. Having this dashboard will not only

Kyle to unveil Veteran Drive soon BY MEGAN WEHRING KYLE — Veterans will be recognized for their service with a new road name. Kyle City Council approved a resolution to rename a portion of West Ranch to Market 150 to Veterans Drive and direct staff to install signs on or near Memorial Day in May. A specific date has not been decided yet. The city will use allocated funds and resources to assist businesses along the stretch of West RM 150 that will be affected. Once businesses are notified, they can apply to receive reimbursement that they qualify for. Mailing postcards with a website link could be more accessible and ensures residents that it is not spam, council member Yvonne Flores-Cale explained. “Since it’s such a specific area,” Flores-Cale said. “You could hand out flyers or postcards to make sure everybody got it. Sometimes a lot of people do not apply for that stuff because they do not know [about it].” While Rebel Drive and Fajita Drive is a part of Kyle history now, council member Robert Rizo said renaming the road was an effort by the residents. “There was a committee put together with citizens of this town,” Rizo said. “They did an excellent job. They did the research and the renaming of this road was a complete recommendation by the citizens of this city.”

Dacy Lane improvements on map BY SAHAR CHMAIS

HAYS COUNTY – The Dacy Lane Roadway Improvement project is set to begin this week to make substantial upgrades and improvements, according to Hays County officials. This project was funded through the 2016 Road Bond and is expected to be completed by the fall of 2023. The improvement

project limits are Bebee Road to Hillside Terrace, and road signs have been placed in the area to alert drivers. “The project will reconstruct and expand the existing two-lane roadway,” said Hays County Transportation director, Jerry Borcherding. “From Bebee to Amberwood, there will be five lanes (two in each direction plus a center turn

lane) and from Amberwood to Hillside Terrace there will be three lanes (one in each direction and a center turn lane).” Along with reconstruction and expansion, the project will add numerous safety improvements, which include: • Upgrading all culvert crossings to desirable county standards, • Adding traffic signals at

Bebee and Windy Hill, • Adding shoulders. • Improving horizontal/ vertical roadway geometry and • Adding limited sidewalks at the southern and northern ends near Chapa and McCormick middle schools. Other improvements from the project will widen the intersection at Windy Hill Rd., which will provide

Heiss, project director at Vera. Jail does not have to be a first-line of response to poverty or public health problems, she added. Access to the dashboard and understanding the numbers could have a larger impact down the line on policies made about who should go to jail and who should not. Residents who are put in jail for substance abuse or mental health concerns, for example, would not benefit from going to jail, Shell said. This will not fix their problem and it will

most likely exacerbate the issue. Instead of jail, these residents can be placed in a program or service which can make sure they can still return to their family and to work, he explained. The dashboard can also give insight on cite and divert or cite and release policies to see how they affect the jail population and find ways to get them on a downward trend, Shell said. Some system limitations exist. The dashboard is not intended to be used for intricate analysis, said

Beatrice Halbach-Singh, research associate at Vera, but it does highlight booking trends. Data from the dashboard will only be refreshed every two weeks. Another shortcoming from the system is that it does not distinguish the Latinx race from other racial groups, but Halbach-Singh said she is hopeful it will be intact this week. As the program continues to improve, the ultimate goal will be to shed light on the Hays County Jail.

left turns onto Dacy Lane. A new two-lane roadway, which will be called Lois Lane, will be constructed between Marsh Lane in Shadow Creek Subdivision to Dacy Lane. More announcements will be released in advance to major traffic shifts at other times during the project

through the county’s official Facebook and Twitter accounts, the Hays County website and news releases to local media outlets. Borcherding asks that drivers going through the area remain aware and vigilant of the road work and to allow additional travel time during the project.

yield transparency, but it is an informative tool for the taxpayer. “I would say if you look at any single expense that we take from our maintenance and operations budget,” Shell said, “criminal justice issues are at the top.” In 2016, voters passed a $100 million bond package that expanded and renovated the county jail. Additionally, the majority of people occupying jail beds are poor, working class, marginalized or not convicted, said Jasmine

does not ask customers to wear masks when inside the store. Sutherland explained that nearly 99% of their customers walk in masked and the store is never crowded – about one or two customers per hour. But whether to mask or not is completely up to the customers, which is the store’s solution to honoring and respecting the community, Sutherland explained. Even then, the store has received scrutiny from pro- and anti-maskers about their policies. Many businesses, even those

enforcing the mask rule, have said that if a person walks in without a mask, they would only ask the customer to wear one. If they do not oblige, many stores do not want to create unnecessary conflict and drop the matter. Other establishments are not restricting customers from dining if they decide not to wear a mask. Jennifer Walker, owner of Homespun Kitchen & Bar in Dripping Springs, said she is leaving it up to the customers. “I’m sure there will be some people that are not

going to like it,” Walker said. “But I feel like the customer has the right to choose.” John McIntosh, owner of the Barber Shop Bar in Dripping Springs, said lifting the mask order has increased foot traffic. “We’ve noticed an uptick in the number of people who are out and about,” McIntosh said. “While it’s not back to normal, it certainly feels like we are moving that direction.” Not all stores are following suit with their policies. MudBugs was unclear on its masking policies. One

of the managers, John Herdman, said employees wear masks when serving customers. But that was not the case recently. The restaurant’s bartender was serving a customer while hanging a mask from her ear. When Herdman was asked to clarify why the bartender’s face was not covered while serving customers, he said he no longer wanted to comment. Vaccination proclamation Crow’s Nest by Clint Younts

Hey, long time, no see. Some of y’all might’ve wondered why my column hasn’t been in the paper, maybe even worried that the COVID got me. Well, I am happy to announce that I have evaded the virus for more than a year, and now I am confident in knowing that the COVID isn’t going to put me six feet under. I finally was able to get the vaccine two weeks ago and I’m happy as a buzzard chowing down on fresh roadkill. Just knowing that I probably won’t keel over if I were to catch the coronavirus has relieved a lot of stress. Getting the vaccine wasn’t easy. I was on several lists, hoping I would get a call to come get my shot. I was so desperate, I even signed up on a list up in Austin. I wasn’t sure I wanted to risk my life driving into Austin for a potentially lifesaving vaccine, but I was willing to try. Luckily, I was able to get one just down the road. I never thought hypertension was a good thing, but it enabled me to be on the 1B list. And y’all thought all that red meat was unhealthy. I’ve gotta give the folks who ran the vaccine clinic that I attended a lot of praise. They were extremely organized and professional. I’m guessing our state government wasn’t directly involved. There was a slight wait, but the health care professionals and countless volunteers moved us along efficiently. It was reminiscent of working a large herd of cattle through the chutes, except the cows weren’t wearing masks. As for the actual injection, it was no big deal. I hardly felt the needle. Over the past 60+ years, I have received numerous injections: vaccines, antibiotics, anesthetics, and possibly, according to some wack-a-doodles, a microchip for the government to track us. Some of those shots hurt going in, but my corona vaccine slid in like a warm skewer into a marshmallow. The shot tingled a little at first, but it didn’t cause me to stagger or start mumbling incoherently. That came from my celebratory post-vaccine cocktail. Y’all might be curious about any side effects that I might’ve incurred. There have been unsubstantiated reports of all sorts of bad reactions, but the only side effect I had was a noticeably sore shoulder. I’ve heard some folks say they had body aches. I’m 63 years old. I have body aches every day. If the shot caused an extra ache, I didn’t notice. I also heard some folks felt tired after getting their vaccines. Dang, I’ve been tired since 1998, so I can’t accurately report this as being a side effect. I can truthfully say that I didn’t grow a third eyeball, develop an aversion to brisket or suffer any weird symptom like some cranially vacuous individuals claim on Facebook. I still can’t figure why some folks won’t get vaccinated. I’ve read all sorts of crapola posted on social media about the vaccine being dangerous and even potentially deadly. Some cretins with IQs matching their shoe size claim the CDC and our federal government have lied about the dangers of the vaccine, but you’ve got to wonder why so many people throughout the world are getting the vaccine and there are no reports coming from the World Health Organization about deadly side effects. I am surprised there isn’t some inane theory that the COVID vaccine was manufactured in Area 51 from alien DNA. I reckon some folks have a legitimate reason for not getting vaccinated. I feel sorry for their family members, friends and coworkers, but it’s their choice. Hopefully they won’t someday be lying on a hospital bed with a plastic tube crammed down their trachea and thinking, “Maybe I should’ve gotten that vaccine after all.” Personally, I’m thrilled to know I’ll be around on the earth for a while longer as long as I don’t get kicked in the head by a spooked cow. And once I get my second shot, I can go visit my family, assuming they tell me where they live.

Give me full checkout As a young boy growing up, one of the first “jobs” I had was at the grocery store. Technically a volunteer position, it still paid. It was bagging groceries. The store didn’t hire children to bag groceries, but they did allow kids to hang at the end of the checkout line and offer to bag customers’ groceries for them. I was quite good at it, from watching my mother bag our groceries. See, she never allowed someone else to do it, for two reasons. One, she was incredibly particular about what went in each bag and was convinced everyone else did it wrong. Two, we were quite poor growing up and just simply didn’t have the extra money to tip the bagger. That is where the “job” came in for me. I was quick, and I was skilled in making things fit. This was in the era of Tetris, mind you, so I put those skills to good use. Never say video games don’t teach you anything! The bagging gig ended after a short while, and I moved on to using my free time

Kyle Correctional Center gives back with literacy projects BY MEGAN WEHRING

KYLE — In an effort to improve literacy skills in the community, the Kyle Correctional Center is conducting its first service project in a series this month with book drives.

The projects are in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the facility’s operator Management & Training Corporation (MTC). Other projects for each quarter will focus on hunger, fighting mental illness and helping ease the pain

caused by homelessness. The first round of books was donated to the Texas Juvenile Justice Department in San Antonio on March 10. Warden Bernadette Rodriguez said the literacy program is designed for all generations, including juveniles.

“It was impactful to the youths because they got to see and hear about somebody that could relate to them,” Rodriguez said. “Literacy, reading and writing is very important in their life whether it is applying for a job or signing a

contract for a house or an apartment.” Rodriguez added that the juveniles enjoyed hearing the recorded testimonials of adult inmates because they were in the shoes once before. The inmates at the Kyle facility are also record-

More Texans will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine soon. Beginning on Monday, all adults will be allowed to receive a vaccine, according to an announcement by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). While an increase in vaccine supplies is expected for next week, DSHS has directed vaccine providers to prioritize adults 80 years or older. DSHS will launch a website next week to allow people to register for a vaccine through some public health providers. The public can enroll in the Texas Public Health Vaccine Scheduler to identify upcoming vaccine clinics and receive notifications when new clinics and appointments become available. Kid Curry killed at drop of hat

K

id Curry, the most dangerous member of the Wild Bunch, shot a total stranger and left him to die in the dust while passing through a West Texas town on March 27, 1901. Orphaned at an early age, the three Logan boys were raised by a loving aunt in Missouri. But Harvey, the oldest and least receptive to her Christian teachings, eventually led Lonie and Johnny astray. In 1884 the teenagers ran away from home to the wilds of Wyoming, where they learned how to rustle from the hoof up. In four years, the Logans had accumulated enough cash and stolen cattle to start their own ranch. But the youths soon learned that hard work was not nearly as much fun or as profitable as the outlaw life. Using the ranch strictly as a hideout, they resumed their criminal careers. By the savage standards of the times, the Logans were nothing more than

History The Logans had been by Bartee Haile riding with the Wild Bunch for a couple years, when they heard that a small fry in a land crawlrancher named Winters ing with cutthroats. Although leader small groups to confuse Butch Cassidy prided pursuers. Despite this himself on having never clever strategy, lawmen taken a life, he always surrounded the camp of

Harvey Logan and the Sundance Kid. In the ensuing battle, Logan dropped his first sheriff and escaped again. The Wild Bunch fled to Texas in 1900 and wintered in the red-light district of San Antonio. While Harvey was letting his hair down, brother Lonie was slain by the Pinkertons at the Missouri homestead. Returning to the Rockies ahead of Butch and Sundance, Harvey went on a one-man rampage. He refused to be taken alive, and two more sheriffs died in the line of duty. Cutting short a second vacation in Texas, Logan was in his usual ugly mood when a hapless stranger crossed his murderous path in Paint Rock east of San Angelo. Without even pausing to ask the victim’s name, the callous killer added another notch to his deadly six-gun. After five long years, the rancher who sent Johnny Logan to an early grave thought he was safe

from harm. But Harvey secretly slipped into Montana, caught Winters by surprise and took his revenge. For old time’s sake and traveling money, the Wild Bunch pulled one last train robbery in 1901 and then broke up for good. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid headed south for their date with destiny in South America, while Harvey Logan went into hiding in Tennessee. Wherever he ran, however, trouble was never far behind. Venturing out of his Knoxville hotel room for a quiet game of poker, he was soon embroiled in a barroom brawl. The sudden appearance of three policemen activated Logan’s hair-trigger reflexes, and he shot the trio down at the door. Slowed by a serious shoulder wound, Harvey Logan was caught, convicted and sentenced to a long prison term. But a not so funny thing happened on the way to the penitentiary, and he was once again

on the loose. Recruiting a pair of rank amateurs, Logan tried to organize his own gang. But when it came to planning, the gunslinger was no Butch Cassidy. A daylight train job barely covered expenses, and the ill-conceived escape wound up in a steepwalled canyon with the outlaws pinned down by a Colorado posse. Hearing Logan cry out in pain, a sidekick shouted, “Are you hit?” “Yes,” he answered in agony. “And I’m going to end it right here.” Seconds later the sound of a single gunshot echoed through the canyon. Harvey Logan, alias Kid Curry, was his own last victim. “Unforgettable Texans” brings to life the once famous people nobody knows today. When making their bids, all bidders except the Secretary must submit a deposit totaling $14,395.12 in the form of a certified check or cashier’s check made out to the Secretary of HUD. A deposit need not accompany each oral bid. If the successful bid is oral, a deposit of $14,395.12 must be presented before the bidding is closed. The deposit is nonrefundable. The remainder of the purchase price must be delivered within 30 days of the sale or at such other time as the Secretary may determine for good cause shown, time being of the essence. The Commissioner may, at the direction of the HUD representative, offer the property to the second highest bidder for an amount equal to the highest price offered by that bidder. There is no right of redemption, or right of possession based upon a right of redemption, in the mortgagor or others subsequent to a foreclosure completed pursuant to the Act. Therefore, the Foreclosure Commissioner will issue a Deed to the purchaser(s) upon receipt of the entire purchase price in accordance with the terms of the sale as provided herein. HUD does not guarantee that the property will be vacant. The scheduled foreclosure sale shall be cancelled or adjourned if it is established, by documented written application of the mortgagor to the Foreclosure Commissioner not less than 3 days before the date of sale, or otherwise, that the default or defaults upon which the foreclosure is based did not exist at the time of service of this notice of default and foreclosure sale, or all amounts due under the mortgage agreement are tendered to the Foreclosure Commissioner, in the form of a certified or cashier’s check payable to the Secretary of HUD, before public auction of the property is completed.
