Suspect charged in murder case STAFF REPORT

BUDA — William Rojas, 25, was arrested and charged with murder related to the death of a 19-year-old male in Hays County. On April 25, the Hays County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a deceased person outside of the Buda city limits. Detectives were called to the scene and determined the death to be suspicious. The unidentified male at the time was taken to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, where it was determined the decedent had succumbed to

multiple gunshot wounds. The Hays County Sheriff’s Office continued the investigation as a homicide and later identified the decedent as Esbin Santiago Gomez from Guatemala. Through the support of Crime Analysts and the Crime Scene Unit, detectives were able to establish a suspect and the suspect’s vehicle. Rojas, who is originally from El Salvador, has been charged with murder (first-degree felony); two counts of tampering with evidence/human corpse (second-degree felony); and tampering with physical evidence

(third-degree felony). He is currently in the Travis County Jail on unrelated charges and will be transferred to the Hays County Jail at a later time. Season ends for Hays softball Hawks edged 4-3 by Round Rock BY CJ VETTER KYLE – The Hays Hawks softball team finished the season last Friday in a fierce game against the Round Rock Dragons at Westlake High. Going into extra innings, the Hawks played fiercely but lost 4 – 3 in a nail biter of a finish, ending their run in the regional quarterfinals. for the Dragons to get three runs in the third. By managing to squeak out another run, the Hawks were able to tie the game up until the extra frame, when the Dragons were able to slip by with one more run to clinch the victory. It was an incredibly hard-fought game, with neither side giving an inch, Hays Head Coach Lisa Cone said. “We fought, we played a great game and I’m proud of the girls. I think that’s all I can say. 512-268-7862 FIRE, from page 1 for participants to smash a variety of items in a safely-controlled environment. The business has since expanded to include activities like ax throwing, a splatter paint room, two escape rooms and airsoft gun shooting. Although Fogley said they are lucky the fire didn’t make it into the building, he estimates that they still sustained around $60,000 to $70,000 in damages, not including the cost it will take to clean up. Items like printers, keyboards, computer monitors, TV screens and around six pallets of glassware used in the rage room were lost, as well as a trailer used to haul equipment around, vehicles used for car smashes and all of the content inside the shipping container that housed an airsoft target shooting range. Unchartered Adventures employees helped fight the fire for as long as they could on their own — a video from their security camera shows them using a fire hose and fire extinguisher to try and subdue the flames — but flammable items like cardboard boxes, wood and metal caused the fire to spread rapidly and beyond their control against the 20 mph winds. Fogley said one of his main frustrations and concerns is it took 21 minutes from the initial 911 call for emergency crews to arrive at the scene. Although the business is located in east Kyle, it is within Travis County’s emergency service district (ESD 11). When calls in this area are placed, they are transferred from Hays County Dispatch to Travis County Dispatch, who then notified Travis County Fire Rescue

(TCFR). On the day of the fire, after TCFR was notified by Travis County Dispatch, they notified Hays County Dispatch again, who then notified the Kyle Fire Department for further assistance. According to Fogley, they spotted the fire at 11:23 a.m. and called 911 three minutes later after trying to put the fire out themselves. Once crews arrived, water was being put on the fire at 11:47 a.m. At one point, a total of 10 apparatus were on scene from TCFR, Austin Fire Department and Kyle Fire Department. According to the incident detail report from TCFR, they received the call about the fire at 11:28 a.m. The first unit was assigned and en-route a minute later, and arrived on scene at 11:40 a.m. The Kyle Fire Department and Austin Fire Department also arrived on scene to

assist. Crews closer to Unchartered Adventures were out working a fire in Bastrop at the time. “The fire district is aware of the deficiencies of response time in this area,” TCFR Chief Ken Bailey told the Hays Free Press/News-Dispatch. “We are actively working towards building a fire station to cover the Uhland area, which would include where this fire was.” Although the business has taken a substantial hit, Fogley and his business remains resilient. The day after the fire, it was back open and honored the bookings scheduled for that day. Fogley also said they have good relationships with their vendors, who have been sympathetic and supportive of the situation. Two ways the community can best support Unchartered Adventures, Fogley said,

is by making a booking or donating items that can be used to help replenish the inventory they lost. Items like glass bottles, old electronics and wooden furniture are accepted and can either be dropped off at the business, or they will come pick up the items from Kyle/Buda area residents at no charge. Bookings can be made online at www. uncharteredadventures. com. For more info, including what items are needed and will be accepted, call (512) 5373133.

On Thursday, Texas’ power grid operator told at least one power plant to delay its scheduled repairs and keep operating to help meet demand during hotter-than-expected May weather. The next day, the plant went offline anyway when some of its equipment stopped working properly, according to energy giant Calpine, which owns the plant. By just after 5 p.m. Friday, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas announced that six power plants had gone down unexpectedly and asked Texans to turn up their

— at ERCOT’s request — to postpone planned maintenance shutdowns, said Michele Richmond, who represents power plants across the state as executive director of the Texas Competitive Power Advocates. That contradicts what the grid operator said Friday, when an ERCOT spokesperson told The Texas Tribune that maintenance delays did not cause any of the six power plant failures. On Tuesday, an ERCOT spokesperson said he was checking on whether power plant repair delays requested by ERCOT led to Friday’s plant outages.

The great baby formula shortage of '22 I

n the richest country in the world, new mothers are not able to find baby formula or are having to stand in line for hours to get it. That problem is at the top – for now – of the growing pile of economic blunders and social miseries that Joe Biden and his failing policies have caused the American people. Our Teleprompter-dependent president denies any responsibility for screwing up the country in any way, but every voter knows the grim list. In just 15 months on the job – or pretending to be on the job – he and his collection of left-liberal “experts” have brought us 8 percent inflation, sky high gas prices and food shortages. And don’t forget supply chain disruptions, 5 percent

lengthy FDA rules. What we need for baby formula is something like “Operation Warp Feed,” as someone on TV quipped, by Michael but don’t look at anything Reagan like that from Biden. Like all Democrats, he’s mortgage interest rates and following his party’s tradisoaring crime rates at home, tional game plan: plus an unnecessary and First you destroy someincreasingly dangerous enthing that’s working well in tanglement in a war between the private economy – like Russia and Ukraine. the energy industry – with On Thursday, the Biden a series of bad laws and administration finally acpolicies that drive up prices knowledged the baby formu- or cause shortages. la shortage, blamed greedy And then you offer “free” formula makers and put government money to the forth the usual blather but of victims and announce excourse took no responsibility pensive new programs to fix for it. the problems while pretendWhen COVID was exing you didn’t cause them in ported by China to the U.S., the first place. or made much worse and blames them on someone else. Oil prices through the roof? Putin did it, not Biden’s green energy policies or his sabotage of the energy sector. Economy sinking toward recession? Republicans did it – though they’re not in control of Congress. Inflation and $7 a gallon gas in L.A.? Trump did it – though he’s been out of the Oval Office since January of 2021. Lately, according to Biden and the Democrats, the soaring prices of oil, gas and wheat are Putin’s or Russia’s fault. It’s a strange twist. It used to be during the Cold War that Soviet leaders blamed the USSR’s Third World standard of living on

America and capitalism – not on socialism and a rigid command economy run by backward bureaucrats. Remember how we used to laugh at the Soviets – or feel sorry for its citizens – because they had to wait seven years to get a “new” and crummy car? Or how they couldn’t buy Levi’s or Beatles records and had to line up each day to buy basics like bread and toilet paper? Now the Biden government is turning the U.S. into the old Soviet Union. Baby formula is just the latest important product that has been transformed from something a new mother could always buy anywhere into a nerve-wracking ordeal. Overnight, the simple act of buying baby formula has

become a national problem – like trying to get a new car. My son ordered a Ford Expedition last November – and it’s still not built, thanks to the shortage of computer chips. As Biden and his crew of lefties are turning the U.S. into the old USSR, there’s no one in the country who wakes up happier every morning than Jimmy Carter. Compared to Biden’s dismal record, Old Jimmy looks like Winston Churchill and his legacy is looking better and better every day. Time to return to wellness During the pandemic, many women delayed care. Now, it’s time to get back on track. Ascension Seton specialists encourage women to stay diligent when it comes to their health. Dr. Jason Bosco, OB/GYN at Ascension Seton Hays, shares three screenings women should not delay this year. Three Essential Screenings Women Shouldn’t Delay This Year 1. Mammograms: According to the CDC, it is essential that women receive yearly breast exams, and women over 50 should begin regular mammograms. Like many types of cancer, it is essential that breast cancer is caught early. Making a point to keep your yearly exam can save your life. 2. Colonoscopies: Most experts agree that you

Early voting in the May 24 primary runoff elections ends Friday, May 20. Under state law, voters who cast ballots in either party’s primary election must vote only in the same party’s runoff election. Voters who did not cast ballots in the primary may vote in either party’s runoff election. Topping the runoff ballots are runoff elections for attorney general. Incumbent Republican Ken Paxton faces George P. Bush, the current land commissioner. On the Democratic side, former Galveston mayor Joe Jaworski faces Rochelle Garza, a Brownsville civil rights attorney. There are also statewide runoff races for lieutenant governor, land commissioner, comptroller and railroad commissioner, as well as several congressional seats and spots on the state board of education. Local living legend WWII veteran celebrates 104th birthday BY BRITTANY ANDERSON KYLE — It’s not every day a family can celebrate the 104th birthday of a loved one, and a World War II veteran on top of that — but Milton Behrens is the exception. Behrens currently lives at Orchard Park, an assisted living facility in Kyle. On May 10, his family and the Orchard Park community gathered to celebrate the centenarian. Behrens’ daughter Sherral Coe also provided pictures and other mementos from his life, including his time serving in WWII. Behrens’ service in WWII began in July 1942 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served an incredibly important role: as a telephone and telegraph line foreman’s assistant, his unit bravely worked to repair telephone communications that were disrupted by artillery shelling in Normandy, France (arriving the day after D-Day), Rhineland, Germany and in London, England due to the Blitzkrieg. Behrens was honorably discharged on June 8, 1945, and was awarded three Bronze Stars for meritorious service, a Good Conduct Medal and an American Defense Service Medal by Lt. Gen. J. Lawton Collins. Upon returning home, Behrens said he looked forward to being back in Texas, having been gone for years while in service — which was "too doggone long." Weeks later, he got a job as a lineman at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where he worked for 37 years before retiring. Behrens’ son-in-law Leroy Opiela

praised Behrens’ for going into the Army to not only serve his country

but learn a worthwhile trade that helped him find his passion. Behrens lived a full life with his wife Laray, whom he was married to for nearly 68 years, and daughters Sherral and Elva (Opiela), in their

house off Brodie Lane in Sunset Valley — which was then a “short dirt road surrounded by homesteads and farms.” Behrens has also cultivated a close community throughout the four years he has lived at Orchard Park, universally adored by his caregiver, other employees and just about everyone he comes across. During his party, one resident called Behrens the “sweetest, most intelligent person” she had ever met. Students at Barton Middle School even made Behrens a birthday banner with celebratory messages for the party with the help of teacher Heather Opiela, Behrens’ granddaughter. After a couple years of not being able to properly visit with family due to COVID-19 restrictions, Behrens and his family were happy to gather together in-person and celebrate his birthday. His WWII service and commitment to his country that has impacted the generations following him is no doubt inspiring to everyone who meets him — but to his family, they feel lucky they also get to call him, dad, grandpa or Uncle Milton. “All you need to know is that he is a wonderful, wonderful person,” his niece Karen said.

TATE KIRSCHNER

Eagle Scout rank notched by Hays senior KYLE — A Hays High School senior has reached the highest rank attainable in Boy Scouts. Tate Kirschner, 17, has become the second Eagle Scout of Troop 812 (chartered by Kyle VFW Post 12058). Since the first Boy Scout earned his Eagle award over 100 years ago in 1912, the distinction has been earned by more than two million young men, and now a few young women as well. “I am the third Eagle Scout in my family and it means a lot to me,” Kirschner said. “I lost two grandfathers, both Navy veterans, who could not be here. My mom made a promise to my grandfather that she’d do everything to help my three brothers and I pursue and reach our Eagle Scout rank. Three down, and one to go.” Fewer than 5% of Boy Scouts nationwide attain the Eagle Scout rank. Requirements to attain the rank include earning at least 21 merit badges and demonstrating ideals of service and leadership, including organizing and leading a service project. Kirschner’s Eagle Scout project is a high-quality stone path with lighting leading to the children’s playground for Fellowship Church of Plum Creek. Kirschner said he is “grateful to Rudy Cedillo” for allowing him to complete the project. Kirschner, who graduates on May 31, has participated in band, theater, speech and debate, has been vocal in student rights during the pandemic mandates, and created the first Turning Point USA chapter at Hays High School. He joins the Eagle Scout rank alongside older brothers Skye and Cole. Cole is also the Assistant Scoutmaster and Order of the Arrow Representative for Troop 812. Kirschner was celebrated with a Court of Honor on May 15 at Texas Old Town.

National POLICE WEEK National Police Week honors and remembers those who gave their lives in the line of duty. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation to designate May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, law enforcement officers from around the world gather in Washington, DC, to participate in planned events. The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Decades later, the event now commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events which attracts thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our Nation's Capital each year. Locally, the Hays Free Press asked our readers to share photos of law enforcement in their family or community.

Scenes from UIL State meet

HAYS, from page 1 it up,” said Cone. “We put ourselves in a position to possibly score, and MJ got that great hit after battling, and you know, it just went right to somebody.” While their season may be ending, the Hawks have made great strides, taking first place in their district, having won 22 out of the 29 games they played this season. They also ranked 54 out of all teams in Texas, 27 in their division, and 11 in their region. The team is immensely proud of its

progress and is looking forward to the next season. “I’m proud of the girls, they had a great season, and that’s what I want to focus on,” Cone said. “I’m proud of the kids, and you know, they’re champions in my book.” The softball season has come to an end for Hays and will resume next spring. Veterans retreat comes to DS $1 million donation received DRIPPING SPRINGS — Central Texas veterans are getting a permanent retreat and resource base at Patriots’ Hall of Dripping Springs (PHDS). Philanthropists John Paul and Eloise DeJoria have given $1 million from their JP’s Peace, Love & Happiness Foundation to build the PHDS Meeting Hall and PHDS Wellness Center, focusing on Veterans’ health needs and VA Claims assistance. PHDS is a 10-acre permanent retreat and resource base for veterans and their families to connect and find support. The Hill Country retreat will feature a Main Gathering Hall for therapeutic workshops, employment, and educational seminars, in addition to vet-to-vet mentoring and social activities. There will also be a Meeting House for the local VFW and American Legion Post meetings, a Wellness Center with VA claims assistance, a fishing pond, playscape, vegetable garden, obstacle course, ADA walking trailsand more. Patriots’ Hall was founded by Kathryn Chandler, wife of actor Kyle Chandler, and Dr. Mary Jane Hetrick, Dripping Springs Volunteer of the Year. Kathryn had been inspired by her dad, a Vietnam veteran, now living in a veterans’ home in California. “I was only four when my father returned from two tours of Vietnam,” said Kathryn. “But my mom told me he came home a very different person. So, I’ve only known him as an extreme introvert, basically a hermit. But now he is surrounded by other veterans. He listens to the military doctors, has made some incredible friends and is

Veterans get each other. Veterans need each other, and John Paul gets this. He and our community have stepped up big time to make this happen and we can’t thank them enough.” While brainstorming their mission, the board took an in-depth survey of veterans’ needs and applied them to every aspect of the PHDS design. The majority of the PHDS board and advisory board are also veterans. “I can tell you the needs in Central Texas for Veterans are tremendous,’ said Jeff Wells, board member and U.S. Army combat Veteran. “Unemployment rates, mental health, and family issues are all frontof-mind for veterans, and the Patriots’ Hall addresses all of these issues, along with other basic needs. The largest U.S. veteran population in the world resides between Fort Hood and San Antonio. The Patriots’ Hall is right in the center of it all. Veterans helping Veterans. That’s our mission.” John Paul is a proud veteran and joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 18 and spent two years serving upon the U.S.S.

Hornet. In 2006, John Paul was appointed Admiral in the Texas Navy by the Governor of Texas and the Secretary of State. In 2012, he received the Lone Sailor Award, which honors Sea Service veterans who have excelled with distinction in their civilian careers while exemplifying the Navy’s core values of honor, courage, and commitment. “A short distance from my home in Austin is this wonderful veterans hall,” said John Paul. “All too often, many of our vets find themselves alone and with no one to help them. The Patriots’ Hall of Dripping Springs was built to assist and connect veterans to what they need to know for their health and benefits and, more importantly, to provide a place to hang out with one another. We are social animals and we function much better in groups with the support of others. I learned this in my time in the Navy.” Donations can be made to support Patriots’ Hall of Dripping Springs directly through their website at patriotshall.org. Patriots’ Hall is slated to be complete in early 2023.
