Max, 11 year old, Lab mix, male: Max is looking for his new best friend! Some of his bff requirements are to love giving belly rubs and telling him he’s the best boy. Max is housebroken and does great with dogs and cats alike.
Pawly, 9-month old, domestic shorthair mix, female: When you first meet Pawly, she can be a little shy. But don’t let her shy introduction fool you - she is quite a big personality! If you offer your hand to her, she’ll give it a few licks and then ask for pets.

HAYS COUNTY – Fourteen El Camino Real de los Tejas signs were installed throughout Hays County – this comes after the signs were in storage for eight years. The office of the Hays County Judge and the Council for the Indigenous and Tejano Community worked together with the El Camino Real de los Tejas Association and the National Park Service to place the signs on county roadways. An additional nine signs have been ordered to place within San Marcos. “When we found out about the signs in storage, we immediately went about scheduling installation,” said Judge Ruben Becerra. “It’s important that we share our diverse history with everyone who drives through Hays County.” Gina Alba-Rogers, chair of the Council for the Indigenous and Tejano Community (CITC), was thrilled to have the signs placed along the historic trail. “El Camino Real’s history was hidden away and not shared for eight years,” Alba-Rogers said. “It’s unfortunate that past decision makers found the history was not essential enough to be shared with the community. I am
thankful to Judge Becerra who shares our opinion that it’s imperative we
recognize the original trails of our indigenous ancestors and our early pioneers.”

KICKIN’ IT IN KYLE
Music in the Park continues BY CJ VETTER KYLE – Love live music but hate long drives and crowded venues? If so, the city of Kyle has the perfect way to kick off your week. As part of a three-week series, Kyle is hosting Music in the Park Mondays at the Mary Kyle Hartson City Square Park. The event began on July 11 with Fallon Franklin and was followed by Tahni Handal on July 18 – a final performance by Movin’
Melvin will be July 25. “It coincided with the [Parks and Recreation Month] and we usually just hold a series of different actives in celebration of [that],” said Aimee Garcia, Kyle Recreation Manager. Handal’s performance offered covers and original songs including her latest, Monkey and Me. She is a longtime artist whose history stretches back to the 80s, when she was an original member of the Los Angeles all-female rock
band Tantrum and is now a resident of Kyle. “We just moved here from Iowa, so we’re just getting familiar with Kyle. We used to go out all the time to different parks to listen to music, so it was really nice to know that there was something here,” said Diane Ballard, Kyle resident. “The music was pretty diverse, but it was enjoyable to listen to. I wish more people would have been here to enjoy her, but those of us that were here did.”
Next week’s performer, Movin’ Melvin, will offer tap dancing and singing, while Handal will continue her tour by performing on July 23 at 10 p.m. at the Gray Horse Saloon in San Marcos. “I’ve always done this. I’ve never not done this,” Handal said. “I loved the pace, just the freedom to be able to tune into the vibes and play the songs that I felt was right for the moment. It was relaxed. I just feel at home in Kyle.”

Hays County is high COVID-19 risk, according to CDC STAFF REPORT HAYS COUNTY – Several communities are being upgraded to high risk for COVID-19 — Hays County is one of them. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has COVID-19 community levels to help communities decide what prevention steps need to be taken based on the latest data. Levels can be low, medium, or high and are determined by looking at hospital
beds being used, hospital admissions and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area. Precautions for high risk areas include wearing a mask indoors in public, staying up-to-date on vaccines and getting tested when symptoms arise. Additional precautions may be needed for those at high risk. For more information about the current situation in Hays County, please visit the COVID-19 Data Tracker on the CDC website.

In addition to a large covered pavilion, the Garden Center features a storage space for tools and supplies and an area to wash, process and pack produce, minimizing spoilage and waste. There are also restrooms to support the high volume of volunteers working in the garden as well as classroom attendees. While the Garden Center is located in Austin, the Central Texas Food Bank also serves Hays County residents. “Hays County is one of the 21 counties we serve here in Central Texas,” said Paul Gaither, marketing and communications director. “That service area is twice the size of Massachusetts.” The food bank partners with cities to host food drives and mobile food

MENTAL HEALTH
988 connects people to local support BY BRITTANY ANDERSON If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, you can now easily call or text 988 — it may just save a life. The new 988 crisis line, which launched on July 16, confidentially connects people to local, trained crisis counselors who are available 24/7 to help those experiencing a mental health, suicide or substance abuse crisis, or any kind of emotional distress, and provide resources and support. The existing suicide hotline number (1-800273-8255), which has been around since 2005, will still be active but automatically reroute calls through to the new 988 crisis line. The new threedigit number is aimed to be easier to remember, and help continue to erase the stigma and angst of reaching out for help. The National Alliance on Mental Illness has been at the forefront of advocating for 988. NAMI is the largest grassroots mental health organization with over 600 affiliates, and its Central Texas branch serves six counties surrounding Austin, including Hays County, with various programs. Kate Hix, Executive
Director of NAMI Central Texas, explained that the 988 crisis line was created in 2020 in a federallymandated initiative, but was not funded by the federal government. “It’s one of those interesting projects that require states to come up with funding and creative staffing solutions,” Hix said. “988 is the first step in a much larger crisis response project that needs to be happening nationwide, and needs to be funded in Texas.” NAMI Central Texas is continuing to advocate for 988 in the area, where there is work still to be done in order to ensure its success. Along with 24/7 call centers to answer 988 calls locally, mobile crisis teams would deescalate crisis situations in person and crisis stabilization programs would be able to identify short-term and long-term mental health needs. These would help end the revolving-door of ER visits, arrests, incarceration and homelessness. Hix said that in Texas, users can either call or text 988, but noted that at this time they will not be connected to someone local if they text. An online chat option is also available, which could be utilized if you are out of the
country. Hix said that users will be routed through one of five centers in Texas, that aim for 30 to 60 seconds for response time, saying that the two to three minute holds if a call has to be transferred out of the area is crucial. 988 also provides an extra layer of security for those who might be wary of utilizing the line due to not wanting to interact with law enforcement while experiencing a mental
health crisis. According to NAMI, one in four fatal police shootings between 2015 and 2020 involved a person with a mental illness. An estimated 44% of people incarcerated in jail and 37% of people incarcerated in prison have a mental health condition. Millions more end up in emergency rooms that are often not equipped to address mental health crises, leaving them waiting for hours or days without
adequate care. “There is some fear around calling 911 in a mental health situation. [988] connects people to those who are equipped to actually handle these situations. Between 80 and 90% of crises can be de-escalated just during a phone call,” Hix said, reiterating that the line is completely confidential and that law enforcement is not involved. Hix also said that you don’t need to be
experiencing a “level ten” crisis to contact 988 — you might just need a shoulder to cry on, or to talk to someone about how you’re feeling so you can get connected with help. “Hearing that human voice is so important,” Hix said. For more information on 988 and NAMI’s mission, go to www. nami.org/Advocacy/ Crisis-Intervention/988Reimagining-CrisisResponse.

Set your thermostat at 78° or higher, and to 80° or higher if leaving for more than four hours. • Install patio covers, awnings and solar window screens. Shade south and west windows with plants or trees to block the heat. Shade outside air conditioning units or

Overhead and portable fans can also make a room feel 4-6° cooler, but limit vent fan usage above stoves and in bathrooms as they pull in hot outside air, making your A/C work harder. revolving door, where animals are coming in and leaving at the same rate. PAWS of Central Texas, which has shelters in Kyle and Dripping Springs, is a no-kill, nonprofit rescue partner of SMRAS. Minnie Buckhaults, PAWS marketing and social media coordinator, said that PAWS diverts many strays and surrenders from SMRAS to their shelter if they have the space. “When SMRAS is at overcapacity, we send some of our intake staff to evaluate the animals and pull them into our program,” Buckhaults said. “There are high requests for this throughout the year, but especially around holidays or when people are going on vacation.” Banduch said that while you may have good intentions to help the shelter by adopting, it
is better to ensure you have thought it through and that it’s right for your current situation. Listening to shelter staff is key in determining if a pet will fit, as well as how to successfully integrate shelter animals into your home. “Don’t be an impulse shopper,” Banduch said. “Have realistic expectations. … [I always tell people] you’re adopting a toddler for 15 to 20 years. They’re never going to age past two. We want to find forever homes, not impulsive homes that aren’t ready. If you’re not ready, there’s other ways you can help us.” Along with adopting, fostering and volunteering when possible, make sure people know how to be a responsible pet owner. Identify what resources the community needs to do this and be part of spaces where these conversations take place,
like city council meetings. “Support shelter staff. We’re on the frontlines here,” Banduch added. “Everything that we do in our workday is to save these animal’s lives. If it’s heartbreaking from your couch at home, imagine how we feel here.” Banduch reiterated that if you are struggling with your pet in any way — training, behavioral problems or are in need of financial assistance or medical care or food for your pet — SMRAS has programs available that offer help for these things as an alternative to surrendering. PAWS echoes similar sentiments, encouraging anyone who is considering surrendering their pet because of unforeseen circumstances or they feel they aren’t the right fit to contact the shelter first. “A lot of people are nervous to adopt and take an animal into their home because they’ve
never had one before, or have had one and are not sure how to acclimate. Some behaviors can be scary and present other challenges,” Buckhaults said. “Call PAWS. We can talk to you and offer advice. We really want to make sure that your foster pet or adoptive pet succeeds in your home. We’ll do everything we can.” Above all else, though, is spaying and neutering your pets. Banduch said that the procedure needs to become something that is instinctively done, and that there needs to be resources for it made more widely available and affordable in Hays County. “Fixing your own animals saves more lives than anything else that you can do,” Banduch said. “Talk to your neighbors about it. It’s a huge problem in Hays County. Educate one another; reach out. What are the barriers? Is it something that you or we [SMRAS] can help them with?” Ultimately, the culture around owning pets is what needs to change, Banduch said. “We’re not going to get out of the cycle of animals needing shelter until we start to see some real changes within our community and how we are treating our animals,” Banduch said. “They are not disposable. … They are not novelty items. … They are living, sentient beings and not just something you can throw away. It’s a commitment; it’s a responsibility.” Adoptable pets, the latest adoption specials and other information and updates on the shelter can be found on the SMRAS Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ SanMarcosAnimalShelter. Learn how to become a foster or volunteer at www.sanmarcostx. gov/208/San-MarcosRegional-Animal-Shelter.
SHELTER, from page 1 two weeks of July, the shelter took in 23 owner surrenders, 12 return adoptions, 120 strays, 23 wild animals and two seized animals. Christie Banduch, SMRAS Animal Services Manager, said that the shelters most recent adoption event/rescue plea helped, but there has to have some momentum that stays behind it. “What we’re seeing is that everyone rushes in to save the day, and then adoptions dwindle and drop off again,” Banduch said. “Animals are coming in every single day. We need adopters, fosters and rescue support every single day.” Banduch said that while the shelter is located in San Marcos, 30% to 40% of lost animals that come into the shelter are from unincorporated areas of Hays County and cities that don’t have their own animal control, like
Wimberley and Dripping Springs. “If you live in Hays County and your animal is missing, there’s a high likelihood that they’re here,” Banduch said. “We know that it’s someone’s baby; their nails are trimmed, they’re groomed,” adding that microchipping can be an affordable and effective solution to this. Banduch said that on a busy intake day, the shelter can receive up to 30 to 40 animals. They currently have 93 dog kennels and 83 cat cages, and while their actual animal capacity is higher than the number of kennels and cages — mother cats will share a cage with their litter of kittens, for example — the shelter would ideally have 20 to 30 empty kennels a day so they don’t have to go into “panic mode.” Banduch described this ideal situation as a
