The second charge stemmed from the “blowing of a safe” at an Electra movie theater on Jun. 18 and the third concerned his alleged role in the robbery of the desk clerk at the Jefferson Hotel the following night.

The obliging judge consented to a change of venue for the murder trial and moved it two counties south to Graham. Meanwhile, the defendant tried to throw a monkey wrench in the judicial machinery by pressuring the constable at tiny Harrold to serve subpoenas on three imaginary witnesses. Shook figured the proceedings would have to be postponed until the nonexistent trio was found.

We must undertake immediate actions in the Hill Country to prepare for the impacts of climate change.

Had Tom Shook always been a crooked cop concealing his crimes behind a badge? If that was true, he sure had fooled a bunch of people during his eight-year career in law enforcement with different departments in North Texas. And the town council in Electra, the Red River boomtown northwest of Wichita Falls, would not had hired him as the new chief of police had he not come highly recommended.Shooklasted no more than a year as Electra’s top cop. Whether he was fired or left of his own accord is unclear eight decades after the fact. It may be that the town elders got wind of his after-hours activities and elected to play it safe by terminating his employment or Shook simply resigned to pursue a life of crime full-time.

But he had no intention of hanging around for his day in Twocourt.weeks later, the disgraced lawman and five other prisoners jumped the jailer as he served them supper. From 1950 until 1957,  there was a long multi-year drought in Texas and Hays County. During this drought, the annual rainfall averaged seven inches a year. Our normal annual rainfall is 32 inches. Here is the punchline: In 1957, the last year of the drought, the Hays County population was 16,870. Let that sink in, Buda alone now has more people than that!  As of the 2020 census the Hays County population was 241,000. During this drought farmers had to abandon their fields and butcher their livestock.

Shook remained at large until September 1929, when he was arrested for the shooting death of a stranger in Decaturville, Tennessee. Upon discovering their suspect was a fugitive from Lone Star justice, the authorities told the Wichita County sheriff to come and fetch him.Shook was soon back where he had started and under a 24-hour watch to ensure his presence at his next court date. Janet Lillian Huse, age 81, passed away on Friday, September 2, 2022, at Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Buda, Texas. Family was by her side through her short illness. Janet was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on April 5, 1941. She relocated to Buena Park, California in 1983 and resided there for 39 years, before finally moving to Buda, Texas in April of this year. Her final months were spent cherishing time with her son Jonathan, his wife Shayna, and her grandson Hudson.Aftermarrying her husband Gordon in 1958, Janet spent the next six and a half decades caring for her family, often putting their needs far above her

Knowing what to do in the face of a natural disaster or other crises can help save lives, and various leaders in Hays County are working to build a stronger, more resilient community to ensure that its residents are prepared for times like this.

For Jones, the mission of the fair is simple: if residents are knowledgeable enough to help themselves and others during times of crisis, first responders will not be inundated with 911 calls and they can focus on the situation at hand, not deplete resources and end up being able to help more people.Getting directly involved in some of the local efforts that aim to educate the public in this way is one way to ensure you are prepared. Organizations like Community Emergency Response Team and Texas Search and Rescue allow residents to learn valuable life-saving skills while also assisting first responders.

In the city staff’s opinion, the project is “above and beyond.” City council members also loved the development plan.

Mitchell believes that the council's focus should be on elevating the design standards, particularly out east of Kyle.

BY AMIRA VAN LEEUWEN

KYLE — With a 3-3 vote, Kyle City Council decided against moving forward with a rezoning ordinance that rezones approximately 54.23 acres of land from retail services to a Planned Unit Development (PUD). City council members Michael Tobias, Daniela Parsley and Yvonne FloresCale all voted in dissent and Mayor Travis Mitchell, Mayor Pro Tem Robert Rizo and council member Ashlee Bradshaw voted for theAccordingordinance.to Interim Director of Planning Will Atkinson, the design is a worksignificantdevelopment.Vybepedestrian-focused,trail-oriented“They’vedoneaamountofintermsoftrying

protect retail, she also encouraged Flores-Cale to look at the Kyle Parkway deal that was previously approved, which gave up 15 acres of retail for 7,500 square feet of retail for multifamily on a congested road.“Ijust wanna make sure, whatever we are gonna give up, we completely think through it, and we’re making the right sacrifices. Because sacrificing for homes is not what the area needs,” Flores-Cale said.

“As these developments come in, even though they look great and everything, we also need to think about that traffic pattern,” Shield said. “It’s a nightmare sometimes. ...This development looks great, but can 150 support it?”Applicant Todd Kaiser with BGK Architects talked briefly about the design and architecture. Kaiser said the concept from the very beginning was to use real, solid materials like local Texas brick, good windows and steel planters in front of every house with various plantings.

“In my opinion, I believe a gold standard or a better functioning project from an overall design is much better than the standard,” AtkinsonBecausesaid.the area is already zoned, Atkinson said the council has to approve this project or go with another project that might lack quality. Parsley said it felt like the council was being trapped.

Bradshaw thought the development was “amazing” and motioned to approve the rezoning ordinance.“Iappreciate the thought that really went into everything from the design of the homes to the flow of traffic to the green space and everything like that. I think this is something

“[The] average home has three to four cars per household. That’s 760 more cars on that road,” Tobias observed. “Not to be the devil’s advocate on that, but I’m just letting you know because of the concerns we’re having on thatFlores-Caletraffic.” expressed her concerns about parking.“Iknow you guys are saying ‘But there’s a garage in the back and it can hold two cars in the garage and two cars in the actual driveaway.’ That doesn’t matter to me because, the truth of the matter is, when people come over they don’t park at the back of the house. They park at the front. That has

to make this project function properly from a pedestrian safety perspective and also to integrate into the Vybe Trail system in a very well thought out comprehensive manner,” Atkinson said.

caused a real safety issue for my neighborhood in particular, so I can’t imagine that it’s going to be better here,” Flores-Cale said.Flores-Cale was also concerned about traffic and thought it would cause more road stress.

Green explained that due to finances, implementing fewer homes was not an option for Bridge Tower Homes.Green addressed the traffic concern by proposing to continue to move the project along.

“If we can continue to move the project forward, what I can do with Will is, I don’t have a problem with paying for a traffic study to see what it looks like on 150. If it were to come back that we needed a traffic light or something big like that, at that time, between myself, my company, the city and TxDOT, try to work through getting that done,” Green Flores-Calesaid.was a big advocate for protecting retail. “I have fought against straight zoning and the development that comes with straight zoning for a long time, out there in particular, because I’ve seen developers take advantage of the cheap land that’s available to them out East to build rows of houses such as Waterleaf, Post Oak and all those other subdivisions down 150 that I consider to be inferior compared to the standard that we have for our community,” Mitchell said.

He noted how interesting it was that the staff’s interest in developing Kyle “the right way” translates over to the council members.

“It’s a timeless design. We try to stay away from trend and flashiness, but to focus more on simplicity and quality,” Kaiser said.

The townhomes also have two-car garages with parked driveways, which raised many questions and back and forth among council members, Atkinson and theTobiasdevelopers.wondered how many homes were outlined in the development. Kaiser clarified that there would be about 198 new homes.

In a follow up letter received Aug. 24 the city narrowed the exceptions to one and no longer cited the others.
