I

n this month’s Hays County Echo, we continue our occcasional series, Seeking Spirituality. The goal is to have conversations with area residents about their journey to, or from, religion and what it means to be spiritual. For this issue, we heard from a Buda couple who found their way to Wicca. Their story may be very different from yours, but what better way to understand other view points than by reading about them? Summer is in full swing. Are you taking advantage of the many parks and swimming holes in the Hays County area? Thanks to our very own David White for

Seeking spirituality by Kim Hilsenbeck

What does it mean to be spiritual? Why do many people turn to one kind of religion or another? Or none? In this occasional series, Seeking Spirituality, Hays County Echo explores these and other questions. We want to talk to people in greater Hays County area about what they believe and why, how they arrived at their current viewpoint and the journey to get there. Want to be part of the conversation? We’re reaching out to people of all faiths and those who don’t practice any religion. Whether you are Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Wiccan, Buddhist, atheist or something else. Contact Hays County Echo at 512-268-7862 or email kim@haysfreepress. com, subject heading Spirituality.

escribing her personal sense of spirituality was a little daunting for Kimberly Knudsen of Hays County. She and her husband, Mack, consider themselves Wiccan. That can be a scary proposition for people who don’t understand the nature of Wicca. Knudsen said more and more people around the world are following Wicca but don’t advertise it. The couple has studied Wicca for the past several years, and learned a lot. They follow some basic rules. Kimberley said, “Rule #1 – do not intentionally harm anybody.” The learning also made them delve into Paganism because Wicca is so closely related. “Wicca is derived from Paganism,” she said. “It’s a nature-based religion.” But those who practice Wicca, and Paganism, typically have a belief system that includes a higher power. Knudsen said Wiccans believe in a god and goddess, essentially the sun and moon. “They are the embodiment of the Earth. It’s all about the Circle of Life. There is a purpose for both gods; but they work together as one.” A stay-at-home mom of

about 11 years, Knudsen was raised, albeit loosely, in nondenominational Christian churches. Her early years were in Kansas. “We [she and her two older siblings] went to Sunday School and all that,” she said. “I remember it was not appealing to me – our parents didn’t shove it down our throats.” But her grandmother was active in several churches and Knudsen tagged along. “I helped my grandma in the communion room,” she said. “We would fill glasses with juice and get bread ready for communion.” Knudsen’s family moved to Corpus Christi and lived there for a time. They then found their way to Central Texas when she was nine. There, she met neighbors who went to church every Wednesday and Sunday. “Occasionally, I would go to the Wednesday service,” she said. But Knudsen never really felt like she belonged. “I didn’t really feel like I fit in. I felt I stuck out like a loose nail,” she said. “I didn’t know what they were talking about. I never had urge to pick up the Bible

and read it; I had a hard time deciphering it.” Knudsen said her tenure at a Baptist church was short-lived. At that point, Knudsen said she thought she should be nondenominational. From there, she transitioned into what most people called a Goth look – wearing a lot of black, white makeup and listening to heavy metal music. “People were somewhat frightened by me,” she said. When she joined band in high school, she said many of her fellow bandmates tried to get her to go to church. “They felt I needed religion,” she said. Later in life, Knudsen said a pastor and his wife walked around her neighborhood inviting people to attend their nondenominational church. Services took place at a local elementary school on Sundays. “We gave it a try and went,” Knudsen said. Her children were ages 6, 5 and 3 at the time. “They would not sit and listen in church,” she said. Knudsen continued to try the conventional religion route. During one service, she said the pastor spoke about how TV and movies were the problem with

the world. After the service, Knudsen and her husband – a general manager of a Blockbuster store at the time – had conversation with the minister. “The pastor backpeddled when he found out Mack managed a Blockbuster,” she said. The other thing that struck her as odd was the pastor told her he did not have blind faith in God or religion. Despite trying, Knudsen said she and her husband felt uncomfortable. “It felt like we were in a cult,” she said. “The way the pastor was speaking, we felt uncomfortable.” That was about when Knudsen said her husband started researching Wicca. “He read the book, “To Ride a Silver Broomstick” by Silver Ravenwolf,” which Knudsen said was an introductory book that explained Wicca. “He read it and was like, ‘Yes, this is me,’” she said. “It defined how he’s always lived.” She said Mack did more research and would then explain what he learned to Kimberly. “At first I wasn’t on board,” she said. “I didn’t have any [organized] religion at that time, but I believed in a higher

power.” She found Wicca made sense to her. “The seasons have meaning. For example, spring is new life (goddess),” she said. Knudsen wants to clear up to notion that Wiccans worship the Christian Devil, or Satan. “We don’t believe in the Devil,” she said. “I don’t necessarily know if Satan is what Christians depict him as. We don’t actually recognize him.” She said some people believe that bad things are happening because of the Devil. “Wiccans believe you are responsible for your own actions,” Knudsen said. “You have to accept responsibility for your actions – you can’t blame it on someone else.” While Knudsen said Wiccans are what many considere witches, she said it’s not the kind of witch who rides a broom, has a cauldron and casts spells to hurt people. “Wiccans don’t believe in hurting others,” she said. How would Knudsen describe Wicca? “Be a good person in general, protect the Earth, protect yourself and don’t cause harm to others or nature,” she said.

lyssa Sharpe is an accidental YouTube success. She practices astrology and has been interested in it since she was in her early twenties. Someone showed her a birth chart and she got hooked. Sharpe, now 30, is making a name for herself in the field of on online astrology readers. When she wanted to start making YouTube videos, she began by explaining the practice of astrology. “I started making videos on sun signs, and people started asking me for more information,” she said during a recent interview. She told them, “You’re not just your sun sign. There are moon signs, rising signs … those things tell about your personality,” she said. Sharpe said that intrigued people. “Everyone has a chart,” she said. “Sometimes you’re not exactly like your chart. Libra seemed to describe me pretty well but that’s not true for everyone; there are a lot of things that can take away from that sun sign.” She said after a reading, people ask her, “‘How did you know that?’ Well, it’s just there and I can read it.” Sharpe equated her talent to being like a tradesman who knows how to use the tools. It didn’t take long before Sharpe was getting more and more requests for astrological readings on her YouTube channel. She now has more than 30,000 subscribers. How does it work? Sharpe often uses Astro.com to create a chart and conduct a reading. Sitting at a Starbuck’s recently, she showed this writer how it works. She asked for information such as birthdate, birth time and location. After a cursory look at the chart, some of the information she read sounded right, some was way off. But a more thorough reading allowed Sharpe to uncover nuances and some anomalies. Astrological terms like houses and retrograde are more complicated than the horoscopes people

With more time and a more in-depth reading, Sharpe could probably provide a reasonable picture of someone’s personality, their childhood, what kind of person they might be compatible with and more. In some cultures, parents have astrologers do a birth chart reading for their children, yet they never show the reading to them. Sharpe enjoys her work and said she is making money on this endeavor, but that “It’s very supplemental income at this point.” Sharpe worked as a waitress, but was fired when she was eight months pregnant. She started her YouTube channel for the residual income. She chose astrology because she could explain it to viewers. Much of her income is still based on advertisements – meaning, people clicking on them while on her channel. She gets a percentage of click throughs, or what’s called residual income. Sharpe said somewhere along the line, the church decided they didn’t like it anymore. “They dismissed it as heresy and stupid,” she said. “But people are getting really into astrology again. There’s been a resurgence lately.” Why the shift? “Well astrologically, we’re in the Age of Aquarius — which is technological, innovation and mind opening, understanding the truth behind things,” she explained. Sharpe said we were in Pisces, which was very religious and started at the time of the birth of Jesus, but we’re now transitioning to Aquarius. She said some people are reexamining their traditional views. “A lot of people are like, I grew up in church and I get it, but is there more? They see a lot more with astrology,” she said. Sharpe believes a deity created the universe. “And if that’s the case,” she said, “who is to say that a deity didn’t also create astrology?” “I’m looking for something that makes sense,” she said of her own reasons for taking up the practice.

In areas with suitable habitat, such as Jacob’s Well Natural Area, you’ll find such water birds as great blue herons, green herons and a variety of sandpipers. Go a little further from this area, to the Hornsby Bend water treatment facility and you’ll find a locale attracting hundreds of birds ranging from gulls and terns to hawks and songbirds. This area also boasts one

of the most spectacular sights in natural history, the nightly flights of Mexican free-tailed bats from nearby Bracken Cave. Each evening in the spring and summer, up to 40 million bats pour forth from a birthing cave to go hunting insects. Hawks and owls await the bats and pick off a few each evening. Whether it’s on The Meadows Center marsh walkways or along the banks of the Blanco River at Wimberley’s Blue Hole park, you’ll find birds, ranging from cattle egrets to rose-breasted grosbeaks – and just about everything in between.

STEEPLECHASE PARK

DISC GOLF Hays County’s hidden disc golf gem is Steeplechase Park in Kyle. It has an 18 hole, double tee-box, disc golf course designed by John Houck, a two-time world champion. Beauty and bounty in the summer garden BEAUTY TIP One other thing gardeners do in the summer is add a pop of color and beauty to their garden and deck by putting heat-loving plants into containers or in the yard. Esperanza, plumbago, salvia, coreopsis, lantana, gomphrena, batface cuphea and zinnias are all popular choices for this time of year. And don’t forget to keep the bird baths and feeders filled for the birds and you will have something to look at as you sit under that tree!

by Christine Reid

It’s hot, sticky and humid outside and some of you gardeners may long to grab a cold one and find a tree to sit under. Hold on just a durn minute! Before you plop yourself down in that chaise lounge, get a few garden chores done so you can relax, summer style. Remember all the work you put into the yard and garden back in the spring? Well, now is when you start getting some tasty payback. Many varieties of peaches and plums are ready this time of the year, along with tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and more.

Want to know what your home is truly worth?

WATERING One of the main garden jobs in the summer is watering and it pays to do it efficiently, to save you both time and money on your water bill. If the soil is healthy and high in organic matter like compost, it will hold moisture better and you won’t have to water as often. When you do water, do it slowly, thoroughly and deeply, so that the first few inches of soil gets saturated. Then, make sure the plants are well-mulched with a natural product such as hardwood or cedar mulch. In fact, if you have a bare patch, it’s a good idea to mulch it, too, to discourage weeds and to keep the soil soft and moist. Any questions? Send an email to reidsnursery@gmail. com or call us at (512) 3986011. Enjoy your garden!
