The Kyle Area Chamber was the first organization to pass a resolution to support the expansion of educational offerings by having Austin Community College District become a reality within the Hays CISD boundaries. The first building is currently under construction as RAY HERNANDEZ part of a 96-acre ACC Kyle Chamber of Commerce development at the corner of 1626 and Kohlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Crossing here in Kyle. The Kyle Area Chamber is the voice of the business community, and here is an excerpt from a study executed by The Schapiro Group, Inc. on why businesses have real value in Chamber membership. Advocates of chambers of commerce have long believed that when a company is active in its local chamber, it is doing the right thing not only for the community but for its own success as well. While there is plenty of evidence to show the impact of chambers of commerce on their communities, it is much harder to find data that quantify the impact of belonging to a chamber. This study, commissioned by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives with support from Small Business Network, Inc., is designed to do just that: determine the real value to companies in terms of consumer outcomes of joining and being active in their local chamber of commerce. A Brief History The City of Kyle was founded in 1880 by nearby settlers from the communities of Blanco and Mountain City. Fergus Kyle, for whom the town was named, and the family of David Moore donated 200 acres of land for a town site when the International and Great Northern Railroad built a line from Austin to San Antonio. Lots were first sold in October 1880 at an auction held beneath a Live Oak tree at 204 Sledge Street. And thus the rich history and tradition of Kyle began. Kyle is now a booming community and home to thousands of citizens. Straddling I-35, eight miles north of San Marcos and 20 miles south of Austin, Kyle is the

second largest city in Hays County. Approximately 60 miles north of San Antonio, 200 miles west of Houston and 250 miles south of Dallas, the community of Kyle enjoys a south central location convenient to most major population centers in Texas. With a strategic location close to major highways, airports and rail, Kyle is a great community to live and conduct business in.

yle has always had one foot in the proverbial road. Founded in 1880, as railroad tracks were being laid through Hays County to connect Austin and San Antonio, our town is a product of progress and movement. In a similar way, today’s Kyle owes its current growth spurt to another, equally critical north-south artery: Interstate 35. Although I-35 first carved its way through Kyle in the early 1960s, only in the past decade has it become our city’s true life’s blood, spawning an explosion of new businesses and residential areas that has recently hit fever pitch. And as

Kyle and neighboring Hays County residents know, the current boom has sparked the need for more roads, more expansion ... feeder roads, service roads, overpasses, toll roads, new subdivisions, and ever more commerce. “Interstate 35 is kind of like the railroad was,” observes Kate Johnson, who is chair of the Hays County Historical Foundation. “The railroad brought commerce, brought a way to sell your products.” But I-35’s path through eastern Kyle is no accident. Just as Kyle’s selection as a way-station by early railroad surveyors was no accident. Like the iron horse before it – and the historic Post Road of the early 1900s, the short-lived Highway 2

(circa 1919 to about 1926), and eventually U.S. Route 81 – the interstate that now defines Kyle, echoes an ancient series of north-south animal migration paths, cattle trails, Spanish mission roads and prehistoric trading routes, all connected by Central Texas’s springs and waterways and sheltering oak groves.

All roads lead through Kyle? Well, kind of...

As a general route between the rugged Balcones Escarpment and the flatter Blackland Prairie, the precursors to I-35 span history: From long-vanished footpaths forged

by native people millennia ago, to the southern portions of Spain’s Caminos Reales in the 1600s and 1700s. The same basic north-south movement continued with the cattle drives feeding into the Shawnee Trail and later the Chisholm in the mid-and-late 1800s; ditto for the old stagecoach routes, which ran east and west of modern I-35 in Kyle in the mid-1800s. The saga continued with the earliest precursor to I-35: A military road built by the Republic of Texas in the late 1830s. In the early 1900s came Highway 2, which was then overlaid by U.S. Route 81 starting around 1926. All of these roads paved the way for today’s I-35 as it courses through Kyle.

“Kids today, they don’t understand that (before there were roadways, railroads or highways) there was only one road. And that was the Camino Real at one time,” says Johnson, who is currently helping the Texas Department of Transportation, a.k.a. TxDOT, retrace the southern sections of Spain’s royal roads. “Davy Crockett, Sam Houston, Santa Ana, they all came through what would become Kyle on the Camino. They would stop, and they had their favorite trees they would camp under. In fact, there was a group of trees at Pecan Springs – it’s still there, and those trees are still there. ...”

Road” by drivers and non-natives. While Barton could share family stories of Hays County’s early days, he could only speculate on who passed through this region before Europeans arrived – and why. But he knows the answer involves water. “Nobody’s really an expert in what people were coming to the springs in Hays County, and the Blanco River and Onion Creek. But there are remnants from thousands and thousands of years back. I’ve picked up lots of flint that had been used probably in cooking – just shards, from west of Kyle about a mile or so, on the Blanco River. They had to be anywhere from...200 to 10,000 years old!” Barton said wryly. Point being, the shards are very old. Not European. Whoever they were, those earlier people cut the paths that cattle drivers would eventually use, whether following some discernible trail or just following logic, that leastresistant path.

Ancient Indian hunting/ trading routes Many archaeologists believe there was a great deal of north-south travel on either side of what is now I-35 – a much older series of trails and byways forged by Paleo-Indian tribes. Clovis points dating back 10,000 years have been uncovered in or very near most of the major future cities that developed along I-35 in Central Texas. In Howard J. Erlichman’s recent book “Camino del Norte, How a Series of Watering Holes, Fords and Dirt Trails Evolved into Interstate 35 in Texas,” published by Texas A&M University in 2006, the author notes that significant finds have occurred near springs in San Marcos and sites along the Blanco River outside of Kyle. These sites point to a natural path along “water lines” bordering the Balcones Escarpment, where natural springs provide not only life-giving water but sacred spaces. Ancient springs gurgled up regularly between San Antonio and Austin.

Camino Real

After Spain’s conquest of Mexico in the mid-16th century, Spanish explorers and missionary priests helped establish a network of through-ways from Mexico into Central Texas, the region’s earliest “interstate” system. It’s well documented that one of the primary southern Caminos Reales, or royal roads, followed a trajectory almost identical to that of I-35 as it travels through San Antonio, as far north as Waco. Kate Johnson’s research with local historian Lila Knight has turned up evidence that the future Kyle played a role during that time. Johnson and Knight are currently working on a map, in conjunction with TxDOT,

Early roadways through Kyle to identify the Camino’s original alignment through Hays County. “At the turn of the 20th century there were a lot more roads through Kyle than there are now,” Johnson says. “We feel that some of the early buildings (pre-railroad structures) faced in the direction of the railroad. Why would they do that – unless there was a road before that? We’re thinking that it was the Camino Real. We feel the Post Road (established in 1917) was part of the original Camino. “We have found out that when these missions would come up, or these people that would supply the mission, they had a lot of animals with them, so you had to go from spring to spring to spring... So we’re looking at the original alignment being from stream to stream on the east side of what’s now I-35.” For example, Pecan Springs, which was then called Live Oak Spring, was off of the modern-day Yarrington Road exit in Kyle, she says. Kyle old-timers and historians alike point out that groups of oak trees, known as oak motts, often served as “markers” for the people coming through. These were likely markers for regional Indian tribes, as well, Johnson says.

Cattle Trails: The Chisholm and Shawnee Trails

Bob Barton, the late publisher of the Hays Free Press, was told by his forefathers – the Slaughters, who settled the area around 1832 – about regional cattle drives in the mid to late 1800s. Between Kyle and Lockhart to the east, “the big ranchers gathered their herds before the big drives. There wasn’t much water there, so people didn’t have many big ranches in that area,” he said. That meant that cattlemen and their massive herds could gather freely, before feeding into the Chisholm Trail (1867-1884), which cut through the pre-Kyle area on its way from South Texas, up through Austin, to its terminus in Abilene, Kansas. These massive drives re-tread earlier routes such as the Shawnee Trail – a broad swath used by drovers from the 1840s until just after the Civil War to move cattle, helping to feed a hungry, war-racked United States. As always, the animals, steering their so-called drivers, followed paths of least resistance. The Shawnee Trail was often called “the Texas

“The section of I-35 through Kyle followed very closely, in most instances, the (north-south) highway for the 1930s and is just a few miles from one of the early trails between Austin and San Antonio,” Barton said. Before the early 1900s, there were no formal roads out of Austin, he added. For its own transportation needs, Kyle pretty much relied on the railroad, or those earlier passages. “The way they traveled back then, and what determined the ‘roads,’ was the weather. In dry weather, they tended to go further west (of what would be I-35), where the creeks weren’t overflowing. Generally, as trails existed then, people took into account how the water situation was.” Barton pointed out that an early highway did precede the first U.S. 81. Locally, it was known as the Old Austin Highway and it became part of State Highway 2, a.k.a. the federally built Meridian Highway, circa 1910. “It ran a couple of miles east, so it missed Buda but did not miss Kyle. Kyle had a little more ‘political influence’ at the time: We were a town of about 800, and Buda had only about 300.” That highway “pretty much followed the old trails of much earlier periods, taking some short-cuts,

eliminating some dog-legs. ...By 1910, a sizable number of people were buying automobiles and traveling by auto,” which created the need for more than just a railroad, Barton explained. “So, before I-35 or 81, we did have a primitive roads system. In fact, there was the old

(Republic of Texas) military road from Austin to San Antonio, laid out in the 1830s and before the Spanish-Mexican war, but it was never heavily traveled,” Barton said. During the first half of the 20th century, the main roadway, shown on historic maps as Highway 2, ran

from Laredo all the way up to the Red River in North Texas. According to Texas State Library and Archives Commission records, TxDot has called it “the precursor to the mighty Interstate 35.” It is referred to now as a “deleted highway” by transportation experts.

Back to the future: I-35 meets Kyle

Department of Defense funds,” says Kyle historian Lila Knight. “He saw it as an important defense infrastructure, in case we ever went to war and had to move troops from one place to another. ... But a lot of the early trails through Texas (as a state) were first blazed by the American military as a series of forts...then later, settlers would follow those trails.” Over time, roads developed, then vanished, then reappeared under new names. They left fascinating traces, historic bridges and roadways throughout Kyle and Hays County. “Actually the old highway that came before I-35 was (U.S. Route) 81, which would have been a two-lane highway, ” Knight says. “It predated I-35 and still can be seen in places. It actually went through the town, through Kyle and through Buda. But when I-35 came, it pretty much by-passed (the historic “old towns”). “Of the earlier roads,” Knight says, “there was the Austin-toSan Antonio Post Road. That was the first federally funded road in Texas. It was funded by the Agriculture Department. The postal service was starting their rural free delivery, and it was sort of a pilot project nationally, to see if it would work. They needed good roads to be able to deliver the mail.” While the old Post Road didn’t run parallel to the future I-35, its route “kind of zigzags through Hays County,” the historian says. “Through Kyle, it was Burleson Road and crossed what is I-35 now, to the eastern side. There’s still a Post Road over there. It’s still marked ‘Post Road.’” Knight says one of the most striking remnants of that road is

the Old Bunton Branch Bridge, one of the few masonry arched bridges left in Texas; it is listed by the Historic Bridge Foundation and other heritage commissions.

“Modern” U.S. Route 81 When the original Highway 81 was altered in the 1950s, “it was not as controversial as the one in the 30s,” Bob Barton recalled. “The old Austin-San Antonio Road had come right through downtown, just past where our newspaper offices are on Center Street now...Then, when they built that Route 81 through here in the 30s, they gave up on Buda and Buda no longer had a major thoroughfare through it. When Eisenhower came in in the ‘50s, they moved it further east. It made a great deal of economic difference for Kyle. Buda went down economically and Kyle held on.... (President Lyndon) Johnson had been elected to Congress, and although his ties were closer to Buda, Kyle was a bigger town. The business community was a little stouter here,” Barton said. “The original plans called for 81 to be further outside Kyle. But whatever business interests we had here must had some sort of impact… They had planned to build two miles east of us, but for some reason they moved it back through Kyle.” Whatever the reasons were, the routing of a road – or the not re-routing of an old road – sealed Kyle’s destiny as a suburban success story. And when all is said and done, the same must be said of I-35, but on a much, much larger scale. “Sometimes it’s accidental,

what happens with roads,” Barton mused. “Some of it’s political influences; some of it is happenstance...” Either way, today Kyle is listed as the fifth fastest-growing city in Texas. The city’s population now hovers around 30,000, and a lot of local folks would point to I-35 as the reason. Whether they bemoan the growing pains brought by the interstate or not, they have to love it and they gotta drive it. Traffic or no traffic. Johnson of the Hays County Historical Foundation sees it another way. She loves roads, bridges, highways – the idea of movement and exchange. “Roads tell a story. Roads bring people and development. But the evolution of a road has really changed over time. I think this is a very important story, because I-35, which is a real plus to any sort of growth, is to me, always part of progress.” But journalist and politico Bob Barton, who embodied the confluence of two seminal Central Texas families, weighed in with his distinctive Twainian twist.

“I loved living here when we were rural, and I didn’t mind being poor, either. But you can’t change the world, and we’re in a different order now. I don’t want us to become so crowded... but you can’t turn the clock back. Traffic exists. ...I don’t have a choice of going back to that earlier time. So I’m gonna roll with it.” Writer’s Note: The afternoon I interviewed Bob Barton for this story was the last time I would ever see him, although I couldn’t have known that then. Today’s progress and change don’t stop with Interstate 35. Since the mighty freeway cut through Kyle several decades ago, our city’s rapid expansion over the past few years has demanded new roads and extensions, such as extension road 1626. According to Kyle’s Director of Economic Development, Diana Blank, 1626 has been a critical addition.

“I can tell you that the creation of 1626 in Kyle has proven invaluable and is THE reason for commercial development in that area of Kyle, which is now at interstate exit 215. It has also been extremely important as an additional and an alternative roadway in supporting the explosive population growth of the community.” Blank adds that Kyle’s addition of ancillary roads like 1626 have been make-or-break developments. “I can’t imagine what this com-

munity would look like today without it from a commercial development, services and mobility perspective. The majority of residents have lived in Kyle, on average, five years or less, so they may not realize how far we have come in recent years. But the landscape of Kyle, and certainly the I-35 area that is now the 1626 intersection, would be much different today without those improvements. We can attribute the commercial base there today, and

alternate mobility option offered by 1626, to the city leaders that faced that difficult decision to move forward at that time.” The western portion of 1626 in the Kyle city limits is complete now. As Blank stated, Kyle has seen incredible growth in its medical and educational sectors, with the development of Austin Community College Campus-Hays on a 96 acres site within the Plum Creek development here in Kyle along 1626.

Where it all began... Claiborne Kyle Log House

Location: County Road 136 (Old Stagecoach Road) Mississippi Senator, Claiborne Kyle and his wife, Lucy Kyle’s home, built in 1850 How did a Mississippi Senator end up in Texas? It’s a tale of embezzlement and betrayal by an old friend. When Mississippi State Treasurer, Robert Graves, disappeared after being accused of embezzlement, Claiborne Kyle was left as the co-signer on Graves’ bond. The forfeit on the bond proved to be financially disastrous, and it left Kyle no choice but to sell off all of his property and flee Mississippi for a new life in Texas. What remains today is the log house. Built by slave labor, it is made up of cedar logs, square notched at the corners. Between the logs, alternating grout of rock and caliche was applied. Aesthetically, the Claiborne Kyle Log House is square-barbell shaped with two matching double room sections separated by a 10 by 6-foot dogtrot. This layout is extremely rare, and in fact, this “linear four-pen dog trot” is the only one of its kind left in Texas. It is highlighted in the Terry Jordan book “Texas Log Buildings: A Folk Architecture.”

Kyle Family Pioneer Cemetery Location: County Road 136 (Old Stagecoach Road) Oldest community cemetery in Hays County

Thought to be Hays County’s oldest all-inclusive community cemetery still in use, the Kyle Cemetery is located on Old Stagecoach Road just outside of Kyle. While there are a couple of family cemeteries in the county established earlier, the Kyle Cemetery is the oldest community cemetery and remains available to anyone who wishes to purchase a burial spot. Kyle Cemetery was established after two burials had been conducted on the grounds, and Colonel Claiborne Kyle donated fifteen acres of land for a “community burial ground.” One of the burials had been his “adopted” son, Willie Parks, who died in 1849. The other burial was conducted prior to Parks’ and is that of an unidentified man whom Colonel Kyle’s ranch hands found hanging from a very large oak tree on the grounds. The tree is now referred to as “The Hanging Tree.” The Kyle Cemetery holds the remains of some of the earliest Hays County settlers, including: Major Edward Burleson – Veteran of the Mexican War and probably one of the most prominent men in the history of this area, and Fergus Kyle – Colonel Claiborne Kyle’s son and the person for whom the town of Kyle was named.

Kyle Family Pioneer Cemetery (Slave Cemetery)

Location: County Road 136 (Old Stagecoach Road) African-American cemetery adjacent/part of the Kyle Cemetery This old African-American cemetery, adjacent to Kyle Cemetery, had an official name change in December 2007. Referred to for decades as the “Slave Cemetery” by the few locals who were even aware of it, the site, in fact, has no surviving tombstones indicating slavery-era deaths, though the slave-holding Claiborne Kyle family lived nearby starting in about 1849, suggesting there may have been slave burials here. When Hays County Historical Commission members first searched the site in 1989 on a county-wide inscription project, they found 16 tombstones, “most of which were turned over, broken, or nearly covered with debris.” They noted that death dates on several stones were early enough for their subjects to have once been in slavery (the earliest date is an 1873 death of 12-year-old William Davis), but the majority of survivng stones are of later origin.

Skyview Cemetery

Location: County Road 136 (Old Stagecoach Road) Cemetery marking the burial of the area’s older African-American citizens A large and well-kept cemetery covering about four acres located just north of the Kyle Cemetery, the Skyview Cemetery is the final resting place for many of Kyle’s African-American citizens. Within the cemetery, there are over 170 marked graves with stones, funeral home markers, or wooden crosses. Uninscribed limestone rocks and bricks mark some graves. Additionally, there are several sunken areas indicating burials. The oldest marked grave is that of Mary Kirby, 1895, followed by Hattie Washington and Annie Hamilton, 1899. It is likely that burials occured between these dates, but the graves are not marked.

San Vicente Cemetery

Location: County Road 136 (Old Stagecoach Road) Cemetery marking the burial of the area’s Hispanic citizens The San Vicente Cemetery has over 220 graves with inscriptions as well as many unmarked graves and graves with uninscribed markers. It is located on Old Stagecoach Road just south of the intersection of County Roads 136, 225, and Center Street. The land for the San Vicente Cemetery was donated in the early 1900s by Vicente Gonzales to insure that early Hispanic citizens of Kyle would have a proper burial. An initiative was set forth by Blas Mendez to establish this cemetery, and it was also at his urging that it be named after the man who donated the land. Until Gonzales donated the land, most Hispanics were buried on the property owned by the ranchers who employed them. There are untold numbers of unmarked burial plots all over Hays County.

Katherine Anne Porter House Location: 508 Center Street The childhood home of one of the most celebrated short story writers

One of America’s most distinguished writers, Katherine Anne Porter, lived in this house on Center Street from 1892-1901. Porter was born on May 15, 1890 in Indian Creek, Texas. When she was two years old, her mother, Mary Alice Jones Porter, passed away. Her father, Harrison Boone Porter, moved the family to Kyle to live with his mother, Catherine Ann Skaggs Porter. Katherine lived in Kyle until 1901, when her grandmother passed away. In 1906, at the age of sixteen, she married John Henry Koontz. The marriage ended soon after. She left Texas in 1915, moving to Chicago to start a career as a journalist and writer. Her first short story “María Concepcíon” was published in 1922. Her first book of short stories “Flowering Judas and Other Stories” was published in 1930. Her 1962 novel “Ship of Fools,” made her a millionaire. She won a Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for “The Collected Stories of Katherine Anne Porter” in 1965. In all, she published five major collections of short stories in her lifetime.

Porter returned to Texas to visit her former homes in her later years and, in accordance with her request, upon her death in 1980, her ashes were interred next to her mother’s grave in the Indian Creek Cemetery. The Katherine Anne Porter House was designated as a National Literary Landmark on June 13, 2002 by the Friends of Libraries USA and the Library of Congress. Blanco Chapel

Location: Private ranch west of town. Not open to the public. The Blanco Chapel served as a church and school until the 1880s In 1865, Major Ezekiel Edward Nance built a masonry structure of native limestone with walls 18 inches thick to serve both as a school and church. Nance was the owner of a cotton gin, gristmill and meatpacking plant, which provided coarse cotton and meat to the Confederacy. Inside of the building (now restored and owned by Emmett McCoy), carved in rock over the opening of the fireplace, is a star and the word “Wisdom.” Into the exterior wall on the front of the building a small cross of limestone was placed. Beneath the cross is a squared stone bearing the inscription BLANCO CHAPEL ERECTED 1865 BY EZEKIEL NANCE. The Blanco Chapel was designated as a recorded Texas Historical Landmark in 1965.



The building is named after its builder, David Alexander Young. When the International and Great Northern Railway came into Kyle, Young and his wife, Fannie Elizabeth, moved here from Mountain City and ran a general merchandise business at this location in 1880. Kyle Auction Oak

Location: 204 S. Sledge Where business lots and most of Kyle’s residential lots were sold at auction Between 1870 and 1880, the International and Great Northern Railroad planned to construct a line between Austin and San Antonio. When the planners found that no towns lay on the route between San Marcos and Austin, they decided to establish a station town along the route. Several offers of land in northern Hays County were received, but the offer by the families of Captain Fergus Kyle and D. R. Moore was accepted. All of the land, except a depot site and track right-of-way, was then deeded to the Texas Land Company for development as a town. In less than a week, the town was surveyed and a plat recorded with the county clerk. Streets and alleys were added and the town was officially designated as Kyle, Texas, in honor of one of the men who donated the land. Captain Kyle was a native of Mississippi and had served as a captain with Terry’s Rangers in the Civil War. In the shade of this mammoth live oak, all of the business lots and most of Kyle’s residential lots were sold at auction. As an added inducement, the railroad offered free train rides to participants in the sale. The land on which this historic tree stands was donated by the railroad in June 1881 for the construction of the town’s first school, Kyle Seminary.

Bunton Branch Bridge

Location: County Road 210 at Bunton Branch Oldest Concrete Bridge in Hays County The Bunton Branch Bridge was constructed in 1915 under a federal aid program to improve rural delivery of mail on the Austin-San Antonio Road. The small concrete arch bridge has the distinction of being the oldest concrete bridge in Hays County, and one of only a few surviving bridges left on the old Austin-San Antonio Post Road. The bridge is composed of a single, reinforced concrete arch span, resting on concrete abutments founded on natural stone. Plainly detailed, the arch has an elliptical shape with a line of coping running across the top of the parapet railing. The Austin-San Antonio Post Road became the first federally funded highway in the state, serving as a model for highway construction programs and the establishment of the Texas State Highway Commission in 1917. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

(Old) Kyle City Hall Location: 109 Burleson Rd. Original City Hall built in 1912

The construction of Kyle City Hall represented a significant achievement for the small rural town and reflected the optimism of its citizens that the town would continue to grow and prosper in the early 20th century. Bolstered by a booming cotton economy at the turn of the century, Kyle’s progressive citizens looked forward to the town’s cultural development by providing a venue for social and civic events, including plays and lectures. The building’s size, scale and fashionable design expressed the community’s ambitions for the future. The commission of an architect to design the building, a rare occurrence in rural communities, emphasized Kyle’s commitment to the undertaking. Although the cotton industry failed to sustain the community’s hopes for economic growth in the decades following the building’s construction, Kyle City Hall continued in its designated role as the town’s social and civic focal point. The block (known as City Square Park) was identified specifically as a public square in the original 1880 town plat. The site hosted traveling shows, musicals and chautauquas (scholarly lectures). Parades passed around the public square before and after the city hall was built. In addition to civic and governmental duties, the hall has served a variety of community purposes and, until 1937, doubled as the high school auditorium. When the Baptist church burned in 1940, its congregation was granted use of the hall for Sunday services. Later, when the Methodist church needed a sanctuary, the two churches held services in the City Hall on a rotating basis. It now serves the city as a senior center and a community meeting place. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
