I can't imagine the fear they felt Normally, I work quietly behind the scenes, but as I tried to find a column for this page, none seemed fitting. There were columns that were about pro-right to bear arms and anti-gun columns, there were words of condolences and calls for action. While all seemed to agree that evil struck Uvalde last week, none said the words I want to say. Heck, I am not even sure the words I am writing will say what I want to say, so I thought about just sticking to light hearted banter type columns, but how can I
ignore the elephant in the room? As I reflect back over the past week, I can’t imagine the horror that unfolded over a couple hour period that I am sure felt like a lifetime. I can’t imagine the fear - the fear felt by those who gasped their last breaths, the fear of those who prayed for their own lives and the fear that those on the outside with loved ones on the inside felt. No, I can’t imagine. It is something no parent should ever have to imagine. School is supposed to

be a safe place. Teachers should not have to worry about active shooter protocols. Kids should be able to just be kids. As I write this, I reflect back to a simpler time. Though guns have never been my thing, even as teenager, I had friends that hunted. I can remember that it wasn’t an unusual
sight at my high school for students to have gun racks in their trucks. I can’t help but wonder how we got from hunting on the weekends to AR15s. And how did we go from children playing tetherball on the playground to cowering under desks fearing for their lives? Kids shouldn’t have to live in an adult world. Childhood is meant to be full of wonder and exploration. Sadly, in today’s world, kids are often connected 24-hours a day and many things are glorified on social media. If it’s not the latest Tik-Tok challenge, it’s
a killer posting about his intentions. I have heard many speculations on how we got from there to here, and probably there is some truth in all of them, but today I am not writing about speculations. Today, I am writing about families broken and a community forever changed. I am mourning the loss that resulted from a horror in a town not so very different from ours. Today, I am crying with the mother who lost a child and the father who couldn’t save his daughter. I am crying for the ones whose chance to live
was cut way too short. Through my years as a journalist, I have met and told the story of many people on the worst day of their lives. But in all the horrors I have covered, I have never had to cover a mass casualty of this magnitude. Today, I am sad. Today, my heart aches for those whose worst day is one I can’t even imagine. Gunman walked into school building unopposed The gunman who killed 21 people inside a Uvalde elementary school walked into the unlocked building unopposed, the Department of Public Safety said in a revised statement, as reported by the Austin American-Statesman and other media sources. After the gunman crashed his grandmother’s truck in a ditch, he walked into the building while firing a semiautomatic weapon purchased just days after his 18th birthday. The shooter was inside a classroom for about an hour. Nineteen children and two teachers were killed before a tactical team got inside the building and killed him. The massacre is the second-deadliest school shooting in modern U.S. history. Five Texas refineries exceed benzene limit Five Texas refineries and one in Louisiana operated
by a San Antonio company last year exceeded federal pollution limits for benzene emissions, which is listed as a carcinogenic chemical by the Environmental Protection Agency. Long-term exposure to benzene has caused blood disorders, according to a story in the San Antonio Express-News. “In Texas, Marathon Petroleum’s Galveston Bay refinery, TotalEnergies’ Port Arthur refinery, Chevron’s Pasadena refinery, Flint Hills Resources’ Corpus Christi East refinery and LyondellBasell’s Houston refinery reported average benzene emissions in 2021 that were above the federal threshold of 9 micrograms per cubic meter,” the Express-News reported. More than 6 million people in the United States live within 3 miles of an oil refinery, according to the EPA.

Boaters urged to ‘clean, drain, and dry’ As summer approaches and Texans head to the state’s lakes and rivers, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department urges boaters and paddlers to do their part to prevent the spread of invasive aquatic species that are threatening Texas lakes. “The best way to prevent the spread of many destructive aquatic invasive species is to clean, drain and dry your boats and equipment – every time,” Brian Van Zee, TPWD inland fisheries regional director, said. Zebra mussels and giant salvinia continue to spread to new waterbodies in the state. Other highly invasive species that can be spread by boaters include water hyacinth, crested floating heart and quagga mussels. “Boaters need to remove all plants, mud and debris from boats, trailers, vehicles and gear and drain the water from the boat, all equipment and on-board
receptacles before leaving the lake. In addition, boats should be dried completely before visiting another lake, preferably for at least a week,” the news release said. Texas home to most Fortune 500 companies Texas now leads the nation as home to the most Fortune 500 companies, surpassing New York and California in the 2022 Fortune 500 list. Texas is home to 53 top companies, with New York home to 51 and California with 50. In addition, Houston and Dallas are in the top five cities in the nation for Fortune 500 companies with 21 and 11 respectively. Fortune 500 companies represent two-thirds of the nation’s GDP with revenues of $16.1 trillion. They employ 29.7 million people worldwide. “Thanks to our unmatched business environment, with no corporate or personal income taxes, a highly skilled and diverse workforce, easy access to global markets, and reasonable regulatory climate, Texas has more businesses relocating and expanding here in our state than ever before,” Gov. Greg Abbott said.
Nearly $5 million in trail grants announced The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission last week awarded $4.8 million in grants to fund 17 recreational trail-related projects across the state. One million dollars of the amount allocated came directly from state Sporting Good Sales Tax funds dedicated to the Recreational Trails Program through a measure passed in the last legislative session. The rest of the funding comes from a portion of the federal gas tax generated by gasoline purchases for off-road vehicles. Under the National Recreational Trails Fund, 30% of total grants it awards goes for motorized trails, with an equal amount going for non-motorized trails, while the rest is discretionary. For a complete list of trail grants awarded, got to tpwd.gov and click the link under TPWD news. Wildfire risk abates slightly Recent rainfall has reduced the potential for widespread wildfires for much, but not all, of the state, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. However, hot and windy conditions are expected to return this week, bringing
with them the increased risk of more wildfires, particularly in the Rolling Plains, Hill Country and South Texas areas of the state. As of Friday, there was one active wildfire, in Taylor County. The Mesquite Heat Fire consumed nearly 11,000 acres and was 82% contained. There are currently 132 counties with burn bans. Number of new COVID-19 cases rising The number of new COVID-19 cases in Texas rose to 32,778 in the past week, up 22% from the previous week, according to the Coronavirus Resource Center at Johns Hopkins University, with 46 deaths reported across the state, a slight decrease. The Texas Department of State Health Services reported 931 lab-confirmed COVID-19 hospitalizations as of Friday in Texas, up slightly from the previous week. Where's the beef?
Austin’s Texas Sausage Company to bring new market, plant to Buda BY C.J. VETTER BUDA – If you’re a Texan, you most likely know barbecue, there’s no two boots about it. And for all the meatenthusiasts in town, there’s good news on the way. An Austin classic, Texas Sausage Company, is coming with a brand-new meat market, alongside a new processing plant, to Buda. Originally opened in the state capital in the 60s, the company specializes in sausages but is planning on expanding its business model locally. The company has purchased the building that was previously Arby’s, located at 270 Old San Antonio Road in Buda, with plans to turn it into a new meat market. Previously, the company primarily did wholesale, but with the purchase of new property, they hope to directly sell to customers. “Right now, it’s
been really difficult to hire employees. Every business is hurting for employees, especially the food industry," said Scott Fiebig, owner of Texas Sausage Co."So one of our priorities was to meet with the manager as soon as we could once the previous owners felt comfortable enough with the deal. I invited the manager and his wife to dinner. “As soon as the deal was almost final, they brought me in to meet all the employees and I told them, ‘Hey, I’ve got a job for you if you want it, I’d love to have y’all’, and they’re a tight-knit group of people. They’ve worked together for a long time and so they all stuck together and stayed with us.” In addition to keeping the entire staff of Arby's, the company is also offering new positions and training. The staff will be trained at their current facility in Austin, before returning to work within
the finished market and plant. The meat market will also be offering foods such as kolaches, breakfast tacos and other easy-to-cook items to let people taste the products before they buy. The market will also feature a drive-thru where people can pick up steaks and other cuts of meat while remaining in their car. The processing plant will function almost identically to the current facility in Austin. “It’s gonna be simple stuff to start with, your sausage wraps, your sausage dogs. We’ll sell fully cooked sausage by the half-pound. We’re planning on making our homemade potato chips. We’re gonna add some other things, but we haven’t finalized all of them,” Fiebig said. The decision for Fiebig to move his company from Austin to Buda was a conclusion he reached after looking at numerous factors, such as leasing costs, taxes and the security of his facility.
Preparations are underway and the former Arby's location will become home to Big's Meat Market. He claims that Austin’s current business climate is tough on small businesses and that bureaucratic inefficiencies have been a major pressure on the company. The increasing prices to live and own a business in Austin also led him to look elsewhere. “We’re on a short-term extension right now, even though we’ve been there in that particular building
since like '62 or '63. The landlord has decided to redevelop the property and wants us out,” Fiebig said. “It’ll be frustrating, as it was disappointing to lose where we’ve been since the sixties. It’s a lot of history and time in that community. As upset and disappointed as those people will be once we’re gone, we’re hoping that we’ll have a whole new group of people excited
about us coming.” The new meat market, named Big’s Meat Market, is set to open around June, with a grand opening soon afterward once the food side of the market is running. They will carry a variety of meat, alongside seasonings, grilling tools, and later, freshly cooked food. For more information, visit Texashotsausage.com.
More apartments moving into Kyle
BY MEGAN WEHRING
KYLE – Construction is currently underway for a 263-unit apartment community along the I-35 corridor in Kyle. Kalterra Capital Partners announced the community, The Verge, on 15.5 acres rezoned for multi-family residential and commercial construction at the southwest corner of I-35 and Kohlers Crossing. The property was purchased in 2020 and Kalterra has worked with the city to rezone the land for high density, class A multi-family and commercial uses. “Acquiring the new mixed-use zoning designation from the City of Kyle was a huge victory for the growing community, giving us the green light
to begin construction on The Verge,” said Managing Partner Clint Nolen. “We believe that partnering with the city to develop a mix of uses that complement Kyle’s growth plan was key to our success in closing the deal. We look forward to completing The Verge in the third quarter of next year.” The apartment complex is scheduled to start leasing in February 2023. In addition, Kalterra has secured a lineup of wellknown restaurant brands for planned retail adjacent to the complex, to begin construction within the next six months: Rosa’s Café, Mighty Fine Burgers, Tony C’s, Rudy’s Bar-B-Q and Zaxby’s. “We think our residents will appreciate the proximity to well-known
restaurants, shopping and entertainment venues as a convenient way to enjoy the community,” said Kristen Hendrix of True Point Communications.
Adjacent to the new Dry Creek Development (formerly Kyle Town Center), the Verge will include a massive interior courtyard with a luxury pool, outdoor
grilling stations, a pickleball court, lounge areas and large green spaces. The Verge’s interior will feature a fitness center, business center, dog spa,
and game rooms. Each unit will be accented by quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances, ninefoot ceilings, balconies and dog yards.

Buda youth receives Red Cross medal for lifesaving efforts BY C.J. VETTER

Silas Timmer was presented with a Red Cross Medal and certificate for his lifesaving actions when a friend couldn't breath during recess.
BUDA – It’s not every day a fourth grade students gets a medal from the Red Cross. Silas Timmer, a fourth grader at Buda Elementary School, was presented with a certificate and medal for Extraordinary Personal Action at a ceremony held at Pfluger Elementary School on Wednesday, May 18. In January, Silas noticed that one of his friends couldn’t breathe during recess and began to perform the Heimlich to help him. When asked how Silas knew how to perform the maneuver, Silas explained that he learned it from watching YouTube videos. “When we learned about Silas saving a boy’s life, we were speechless, you know,” said Silas’ mother, Angela Timmer. “We went wow, Silas is an amazing young boy, full of surprises. This made us so proud.” At the ceremony, Silas was present-
ed the award by Red Cross Central and South Texas Chief Executive Officer Marty McKellips. Also in attendance were Pfluger Elementary Principal Elizabeth Lara and vice-principal Michael Snead, and Silas’ class, teacher, and parents. The certificate issued by the Red Cross is one of many that are given across the nation. What is notable about the award and recognition of the Extraordinary Personal Action certificate is that it is given to those individuals and teams not trained by the Red Cross, and the history of the award stretches back to 1911. “It actually began with giving awards to railroad people who worked and performed first aid on each other, and then it began expanding it to other people who do heroic acts like this one,” McKellips said. Buda named age-friendly community
STAFF REPORT
BUDA — As the older population continues to grow, the city of Buda is ensuring it will continue to be a suitable and age-friendly community. In April, Buda was named an age-friendly community by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). AARP defines an age-friendly community as being inclusive and respectful to residents of every age and ability, and promoting active aging, good health and quality of life. The City of Buda Task Force on Aging is leading the initiative that led to the designation. The Task Force was established in 2017 as an ad-hoc committee to help prioritize critical issues and needs of older citizens and their families. “Our goal as an age-friendly city is to support the health, vibrancy and livability of our community of all ages,” said Jeff Kaufmann, task force vice chairman. By 2030, the last of the baby boomers will reach 65 and the number of older adults is projected to increase by 18 million — meaning one in five Americans will be 65 or older, greater than the number of children under 18. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, 20% of Buda’s population is aged 50 and older, and 10.6% is aged 60 and older. Demographics for Hays County as a whole show that 16% of the population is aged
60 or older, while 11% is aged 50 to 59. Combined, 27% of the population will be older adults for the next several decades. With this upward trend of older adults, having a suitable community for them is vital. According to AARP, Buda has a livability score of 47 out of 100, based on metrics like housing, transportation, social participation and inclusion, outdoor spaces, civic engagement and health services. The task force in Buda will conduct a baseline assessment on the needs of older adults in an effort to develop a three-year plan to address the identified needs and tools to measure progress. Members of the task force have outlined their goals for “designing an age-friendly community that fosters economic growth and makes happier, healthier residents,” including focusing on how they can achieve ‘aging in place’ and ‘aging in community’ in Buda. Aging in place is a person’s ability to safely and comfortably live in the residence of their choice as they get older, regardless of their age, income or ability level, for as long as they are able to. Aging in community is a broader vision of aging in place, and includes access to community services, transportation and support to live independently. The task force has also discussed how ageism — prejudice or discrimination regarding a person’s age — affects older adults. Many feel that their expe-

riences and wisdom are undervalued or under-celebrated in the U.S., and that the changing cultural dynamics in the workplace (such as having to learn and adapt to new technology) and society (such as pressure from the beauty industry) can further lead to isolation. Additionally, the task force reminds community members that words matter: • Instead of using ‘elderly,’ ‘elder seniors’ or ‘senior citizen,’ say ‘older adult’ • Instead of using ‘person with dementia’ or ‘dementia patient,’ say ‘person living with dementia’ • Instead of using ‘nursing home’ or ‘nursing facility,’ say ‘long-term care community’ For more information on the Task Force, visit www.ci.buda.tx.us/692/ Task-Force-on-Aging. Buda teacher starts nonprofit for school materials
BY C.J. VETTER
BUDA - Have you ever looked around your house and asked what you're going to do with all that miscellaneous stuff you have lying around? Golf balls, staplers, scraps and googly eyes typically don’t get much attention. But teachers are eager to get their hands on them, and the Teacher Reuse is stepping in to help. Teachers spend between $750 and $1,000 a year to supply their classrooms, and every year, many teachers are left with a bin full of supplies they don’t know what to do with. That’s where Teacher Reuse comes in. Founded in 2022, the Teacher Reuse is a nonprofit centered around garnering teachers with the supplies they need to not only make their classroom function, but also bring it to life. Being able to give children a place where they feel at home is important, and making them feel “wowed” is beneficial to the learning environment, according to
founder Shelly O’Donnell, who recently retired after 25 years of teaching. “When I was teaching high school, one of my students said, ‘Mrs. O'Donnell, your room looks like a math class’ and I said, what does that even mean?” O'Donnell said. “[He said], ‘there is nothing on your walls, nothing to look at.’” The Teacher Reuse accepts all forms of donations, but especially seeks out materials that they can directly give to educators. Teachers are welcome to come to their pop-up stands or contact them in order to receive free supplies of their choice. Monetary donations will be put toward operational costs. “Right now, we have a storage unit that is almost full and we’re probably ready for our second storage unit,” O’Donnell said. “But there is no money exchanged. We are going to hand this off directly to teachers for free. The idea of the nonprofit originated in Lockhart, where O’Donnell
participated in a successful district-level program. Following her move to Buda, she was able to find like-minded individuals and establish the Teacher Reuse, but with a much larger goal of serving Central Texas. They have already attended events like Buda’s Market in the Park, and are ready to support local
educators. O’Donnell also encourages any former students to donate as a way to give back to their teachers. “I still have students that reach out to me, and thank me for being so hard on them and not just letting them slip through the cracks because it got them to a better place,” O’Donnell said.
For a full list of acceptable donations, directions on how to receive
supplies, and ways to volunteer, visit www. theteacherreuse.org.

Young homebuyers struggle Texas ranks 17th least likely to need co-signer
STAFF REPORT According to a report from Porch, the residential real estate market is seeing signs of cooling off after two years of high competition and fast-rising prices — and while younger home buyers across the U.S. may continue to struggle, those in Texas might be easier off. The millennial generation — Americans ages 26 to 41 — are currently in their peak homebuying years. According to recent data from the National Association of Realtors, they represent 43% of buyers. Amid higher prices and recent interest rate hikes, demand is leveling out. While the market was at peak competition, this made it challenging to outbid buyers who had more resources at their disposal. Now, with home prices at a historic high, many young buyers are being priced out of the market altogether. Young buyers also tend to have less saved up to put towards a home and lack existing home equity to help finance a purchase. To overcome these challenges, some have relied on older friends and family members with more financial resources to act as a co-signer on their mortgage loan. Co-signers are people who agree to be responsible for loan payments if their primary signer defaults, and are especially helpful to young buyers in more expensive housing markets. Because co-signers’ financial resources and
credit history are also evaluated as part of a loan application, this helps buyers with low incomes, more debt or a patchy employment history to increase their likelihood of qualifying for a loan and receiving lower interest rates or higher approval amounts. Young buyers appear to be relying on older cosigners simply to enter the housing market, rather than using co-signers’ financial assistance to purchase more expensive homes. Due to the relationship between home prices and the presence of a cosigner, states in the west and northeast that tend to be more expensive also tend to have younger buyers rely on co-signers more often. In contrast, more affordable states in the southeast and central U.S. have fewer young homebuyers with a cosigner. To determine states with the highest percentage of young homebuyers with an older co-signer, researchers at Porch analyzed the latest data from the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council’s Home Mortgage Disclosure Act. They ranked states by their percentage of young homebuyers (34 years old or younger) with an older co-signer (55 or older). Texas was found to rank 17th in the fewest young buyers utilizing an older co-signer: • 0.775% of young buyers have an older co-signer • $225,000 is the median property value for young buyers with an older cosigner, while $265,000 is the median property value

across all young buyers • $30,000 is the median down payment for young buyers with an older cosigner, while $20,000 is the median down payment across all young buyers In comparison, in the rest of the U.S.: • 0.915% of young buyers have an older cosigner • $295,000 is the median property value for young buyers with an older cosigner, while $285,000 is the median property value across all young buyers • $40,000 is the median down payment for young buyers with an older cosigner, while $30,000 is the median down payment across all young buyers While there has been a decline of pending home sales, online searches, showings and mortgage applications, many experts anticipate a rebalancing in the market over the next year. STAFF REPORT DRIPPING SPRINGS – Ahead of the midterm election, the Sententia Vera Cultural Hub is joining organizations nationwide to celebrate Vote Early Day on Oct. 28. Established in 2020, Vote Early Day is a nonpartisan movement to ensure all Americans have the tools to cast their ballot early. It has brought thousands of national and local partners together in celebration and activation to increase the number of people voting early. The Cultural Hub is a local site for voter information distributed by the League of Women Voters (LWV) of Hays County. During its weekday hours of operation (9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday), the Hub will have voter information to raise awareness about the upcoming midterm election and help people learn about their options to vote early. The Hub has a goal of helping at least 2022 voters cast their ballot before Election Day either in person, through a ballot drop box or by mail. Over 220 million Americans have the option to vote early by mail or in person, but several factors can prevent voters from casting their ballot including long lines and last-minute obligations. “By voting early, we ensure that we have
