DSHS soccer athletes named All Americans STAFF REPORT
DRIPPING SPRINGS – Adam Knutson, Dripping Springs High School graduate, and senior Caroline Dill were named High School All-Americans by the United Soccer Coaches organization. The All-American teams recognize student athletes who compete in the sport
during the winter or spring seasons. Knutson and Dill were among 65 student athletes to earn the honor nationally. Knutson was the only boy to repeat as an All-American. In 2022, Knutson set a school record with 95 points and tied the record for goals with 38 to lead the Tigers to their first appearance in the state championship game. He was named District 26-5A
Midfielder of the Year, a first-team allstate selection, and an academic all-state honoree. He finished his career as the school record holder with 81 goals and 198 points. Knutson will continue his playing career at Trinity University in San Antonio. Dill put together another stellar season between the goalposts to guide the Lady Tigers to the regional finals. In 27 games, Dill and the Dripping Springs defense
allowed just nine goals with 18 shutouts. She was named a first-team all-district honoree and was selected to the all-state honorable mention team. In addition to Knutson and Dill, rising sophomore Ellie Hodsden, rising senior Riley Sisson, and recent graduate Javier Ortega were named to the all-region team. Hodsden was one of just two freshman girls to be named to the squad.

Max, 11 year old, Lab mix, male: Max is looking for his new best friend! Some of his bff requirements are to love giving belly rubs and telling him he’s the best boy. Max is housebroken and does great with dogs and cats alike.
Pawly, 9-month old, domestic shorthair mix, female: When you first meet Pawly, she can be a little shy. But don’t let her shy introduction fool you - she is quite a big personality! If you offer your hand to her, she’ll give it a few licks and then ask for pets.

HAYS COUNTY – Fourteen El Camino Real de los Tejas signs were installed throughout Hays County – this comes after the signs were in storage for eight years. The office of the Hays County Judge and the Council for the Indigenous and Tejano Community worked together with the El Camino Real de los Tejas Association and the National Park Service to place the signs on county roadways. An additional nine signs have been ordered to place within San Marcos. “When we found out about the signs in storage, we immediately went about scheduling installation,” said Judge Ruben Becerra. “It’s important that we share our diverse history with everyone who drives through Hays County.” Gina Alba-Rogers, chair of the Council for the Indigenous and Tejano Community (CITC), was thrilled to have the signs placed along the historic trail. “El Camino Real’s history was hidden away and not shared for eight years,” Alba-Rogers said. “It’s unfortunate that past decision makers found the history was not essential enough to be shared with the community. I am
thankful to Judge Becerra who shares our opinion that it’s imperative we
recognize the original trails of our indigenous ancestors and our early pioneers.”

KICKIN’ IT IN KYLE
Music in the Park continues BY CJ VETTER KYLE – Love live music but hate long drives and crowded venues? If so, the city of Kyle has the perfect way to kick off your week. As part of a three-week series, Kyle is hosting Music in the Park Mondays at the Mary Kyle Hartson City Square Park. The event began on July 11 with Fallon Franklin and was followed by Tahni Handal on July 18 – a final performance by Movin’
Melvin will be July 25. “It coincided with the [Parks and Recreation Month] and we usually just hold a series of different actives in celebration of [that],” said Aimee Garcia, Kyle Recreation Manager. Handal’s performance offered covers and original songs including her latest, Monkey and Me. She is a longtime artist whose history stretches back to the 80s, when she was an original member of the Los Angeles all-female rock
band Tantrum and is now a resident of Kyle. “We just moved here from Iowa, so we’re just getting familiar with Kyle. We used to go out all the time to different parks to listen to music, so it was really nice to know that there was something here,” said Diane Ballard, Kyle resident. “The music was pretty diverse, but it was enjoyable to listen to. I wish more people would have been here to enjoy her, but those of us that were here did.”
Next week’s performer, Movin’ Melvin, will offer tap dancing and singing, while Handal will continue her tour by performing on July 23 at 10 p.m. at the Gray Horse Saloon in San Marcos. “I’ve always done this. I’ve never not done this,” Handal said. “I loved the pace, just the freedom to be able to tune into the vibes and play the songs that I felt was right for the moment. It was relaxed. I just feel at home in Kyle.”

Hays County is high COVID-19 risk, according to CDC STAFF REPORT HAYS COUNTY – Several communities are being upgraded to high risk for COVID-19 — Hays County is one of them. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has COVID-19 community levels to help communities decide what prevention steps need to be taken based on the latest data. Levels can be low, medium, or high and are determined by looking at hospital
beds being used, hospital admissions and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area. Precautions for high risk areas include wearing a mask indoors in public, staying up-to-date on vaccines and getting tested when symptoms arise. Additional precautions may be needed for those at high risk. For more information about the current situation in Hays County, please visit the COVID-19 Data Tracker on the CDC website.

In addition to a large covered pavilion, the Garden Center features a storage space for tools and supplies and an area to wash, process and pack produce, minimizing spoilage and waste. There are also restrooms to support the high volume of volunteers working in the garden as well as classroom attendees. While the Garden Center is located in Austin, the Central Texas Food Bank also serves Hays County residents. “Hays County is one of the 21 counties we serve here in Central Texas,” said Paul Gaither, marketing and communications director. “That service area is twice the size of Massachusetts.” The food bank partners with cities to host food drives and mobile food

MENTAL HEALTH
988 connects people to local support BY BRITTANY ANDERSON If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, you can now easily call or text 988 — it may just save a life. The new 988 crisis line, which launched on July 16, confidentially connects people to local, trained crisis counselors who are available 24/7 to help those experiencing a mental health, suicide or substance abuse crisis, or any kind of emotional distress, and provide resources and support. The existing suicide hotline number (1-800273-8255), which has been around since 2005, will still be active but automatically reroute calls through to the new 988 crisis line. The new threedigit number is aimed to be easier to remember, and help continue to erase the stigma and angst of reaching out for help. The National Alliance on Mental Illness has been at the forefront of advocating for 988. NAMI is the largest grassroots mental health organization with over 600 affiliates, and its Central Texas branch serves six counties surrounding Austin, including Hays County, with various programs. Kate Hix, Executive
Director of NAMI Central Texas, explained that the 988 crisis line was created in 2020 in a federallymandated initiative, but was not funded by the federal government. “It’s one of those interesting projects that require states to come up with funding and creative staffing solutions,” Hix said. “988 is the first step in a much larger crisis response project that needs to be happening nationwide, and needs to be funded in Texas.” NAMI Central Texas is continuing to advocate for 988 in the area, where there is work still to be done in order to ensure its success. Along with 24/7 call centers to answer 988 calls locally, mobile crisis teams would deescalate crisis situations in person and crisis stabilization programs would be able to identify short-term and long-term mental health needs. These would help end the revolving-door of ER visits, arrests, incarceration and homelessness. Hix said that in Texas, users can either call or text 988, but noted that at this time they will not be connected to someone local if they text. An online chat option is also available, which could be utilized if you are out of the
country. Hix said that users will be routed through one of five centers in Texas, that aim for 30 to 60 seconds for response time, saying that the two to three minute holds if a call has to be transferred out of the area is crucial. 988 also provides an extra layer of security for those who might be wary of utilizing the line due to not wanting to interact with law enforcement while experiencing a mental
health crisis. According to NAMI, one in four fatal police shootings between 2015 and 2020 involved a person with a mental illness. An estimated 44% of people incarcerated in jail and 37% of people incarcerated in prison have a mental health condition. Millions more end up in emergency rooms that are often not equipped to address mental health crises, leaving them waiting for hours or days without
adequate care. “There is some fear around calling 911 in a mental health situation. [988] connects people to those who are equipped to actually handle these situations. Between 80 and 90% of crises can be de-escalated just during a phone call,” Hix said, reiterating that the line is completely confidential and that law enforcement is not involved. Hix also said that you don’t need to be
experiencing a “level ten” crisis to contact 988 — you might just need a shoulder to cry on, or to talk to someone about how you’re feeling so you can get connected with help. “Hearing that human voice is so important,” Hix said. For more information on 988 and NAMI’s mission, go to www. nami.org/Advocacy/ Crisis-Intervention/988Reimagining-CrisisResponse.

ENERGY
Lower your bill and beat the heat STAFF REPORT
Saving energy in your home during hot summer months is more important than ever, as ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) has already issued several requests this month for Texans to conserve energy during peak hours in order to prevent grid outages. Although helping the grid as a whole is important, cutting back on your energy use can also personally save
you money and cool you down. Per the Public Utility Commission of Texas, here are some hot weather energy-saving tips: • Setting your thermostat to a lower temperature than normal will not cool your home faster — every degree of extra cooling will increase energy usage 6-8%. Set your thermostat at 78° or higher, and to 80° or higher if leaving for more than four hours. • Install patio covers,
awnings and solar window screens. Shade south and west windows with plants or trees to block the heat. Shade outside air conditioning units or condensers. • Save heat and humiditygenerating activities like cooking, laundering and dishwashing for early morning or evening hours. Set your pool pump to run early in the morning or overnight. According to Power to Save Texas, every degree
above 78 can save you up to 8% on your energy bill, and using a programmable or smart thermostat saves even more. Overhead and portable fans can also make a room feel 4-6° cooler, but limit vent fan usage above stoves and in bathrooms as they pull in hot outside air, making your A/C work harder. Even switching up your usual habits with electrical devices like phone chargers and lamps can help. You
ART
can save up to $40 a year by unplugging six devices that you normally leave plugged in. All electrical devices use some power when they’re turned off but still plugged in,
and they also generate heat. Go to www. powertosavetexas.org for daily updates on grid conditions and for more energy saving tips.

Wimberley senior community reaches goal STAFF REPORT WIMBERLEY - Alexis Pointe Senior Living and The Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance group, together known as the Mural Committee, reached a fundraising goal of $5,000 for a public art project on a silo tank on Alexis Pointe’s property, bringing it closer to completion. Artists who were interested in the project submitted their names and portfolios earlier this week. The Mural Committee will determine the winning design July 21 and announce the winning artist in early August. The chosen artist will then receive $3,000. “We are going to work with the artist’s schedule and would like to start our project in the fall when the weather cools down,” said Katy Starr, Community Relations Director of Alexis Pointe.
goal has been met, anyone interested in contributing to the public art project can still donate at wimberleyarts.org/ donate/. Donors may also send a check to the WVACA at this address: PO Box 608, Wimberley TX 78676. Checks should be made out to "Wimberley Valley Arts & Cultural Alliance" and state the reason as ‘Alexis Pointe Mural’. More information can also be found at www. Members of the Mural Committee stand in front of a silo – which is the blank canvas of a future art project for the Alexis Pointe residents to admire once complete. WVACA also partnered with ACE Hardware and the city of Wimberley to help provide the new beautiful, local and creative view for the Alexis Pointe residents and people of Wimberley. The mural will be painted on the silo in front of Alexis Pointe, which is 110 ft. in circumference and 6.5 feet tall, located at 14100 Ranch
Rd 12 Ste 1, Wimberley, TX 78676. “The goal of this project is to provide a beautiful, public art piece that will be enjoyed as the new view for Alexis Pointe senior residents,” Starr said. “This mural will eventually be on a map route for tourists and locals as well.” Although the fundraising
