Who will win the 10-year showdown? by

N

Moses Leos III

ine years ago, a handful of brave young men took the field in what became a landmark moment in the history of our little part of Hays County. After a 30-plus year hiatus, the old football rivalry between Buda and Kyle was renewed when the Hays Rebels squared off against the newly created Lehman Lobos varsity team in the fall of 2006. While Hays won 56-0, it has since led to nine amazing games brimming with the pride, passion and camaraderie one would expect from Texas high school football. As we enter the tenth installment of the Hays/Lehman football game, the event continues to instill that passionate, yet friendly, rivalry between the two schools. With a 9-0 record, the Rebels continue to maintain their hold on the series. But it hasn’t come without some mighty large speed bumps. Take for instance, the remarkable finish

from 2011, where Hays narrowly escaped with a one point win at the buzzer. But the game has also had its moments of levity to go along with the fierce competition. Recall the “streaker” incident of 2010 that captivated the fanbase and law enforcement – though for entirely different reasons. (NOTE: We don’t advocate for anyone streaking during the game. Thanks) As we move forward in this series, one has to wonder what the future holds over the next ten games. Will Lehman finally get a win? Can Hays continue its dominance? And what could happen to both schools when a third high school is built? For now, we as fans ready ourselves for what should be an amazing game between two outstanding teams. Let’s all enjoy this moment – the fact that we a part of history. A part of the tenth Hays/Lehman game.

Hays Rebels

Things seemed to be going well for the Hays Rebels when they burst out to a 28-0 first quarter lead against Boerne Champion on Aug. 28. Over the next 10 quarters of play, however, Hays was outscored 111-50. Such has been the season thus far for Hays, which has taken a parabolic path of peaks and valleys over their first few games of the season. Injuries have contributed to their issues; their schedule has also played a factor. Hays took on potential playoff contenders Georgetown and Lake Travis in consecutive weeks. But perhaps the biggest struggle has been consistency. While the Rebels have played well at times, they haven’t put together four cohesive quarters of play. Those challenges have led to the Rebels slow start to begin the year. Despite those issues, Hays continues to vie for their first playoff spot since moving up to 6A. photo by Lincoln Ramirez

Of all the questions that surround the Hays Rebels, the offense perhaps holds the majority of them. Those questions have persisted even before staring quarterback Braeden Kent suffered a season ending knee injury on Sept. 4. Consistency has been the main issue for Hays’ offense. Whether it’s finishing drives with points, or just putting together four consistent quarters, Hays hasn’t kept up with their opponent’s pace. Amid those issues, the Rebels have been able to generate offense. Through their game against Lake Travis, Hays has amassed 1116 total yards. The problem? Kent made up 63 percent, or 711 yards, of Hays’ total offensive output. The load now falls squarely on the shoulders of Hays’ senior class, primary Gandy, who hasn’t been much of a factor in their first few games. Gandy has amassed only 138 rushing yards. For the Rebels to be effectively, they must obtain production from their supporting cast to aid Reiley or Castiella. Look for Bruno and Maulding to also step forward to play a larger role in the offense.

Much like their counterparts on offense, injuries have taken a toll on the Rebel defense. What has made things much more difficult is the level of talent they have faced over the past few weeks. Against Georgetown and Lake Travis, Hays’ defense has given up over 800 yards of offense and 108 points. Despite those issues, the Rebels have had several bright moments during their first few games f the year. Guiding them is a defense that holds a variety of experience, primarily in the defensive front. Elrod and Caswell headline a Rebel defense that has the propensity to disrupt offenses. In the defensive backfield, Crayton, Saucedo and Keils have the range to cause issues for opposing quarterbacks. But can they play consistently for four full quarters? That’s the question Hays must answer.

Lehman Lobos The post Jeremy Schilhab era hasn’t been kind to the Lehman Lobos. Through their first three games of the 2015 season, the Lobos have been outscored 125-35 and out gained 1,424-629. It’s all a peculiar development when you consider the Lobos have given up a grand total of seven points in the first quarter of their first three games. It’s what happens after that first quarter that has sunk the Lobos. Inexperience has been a partial part of the problem. And much like their cross-town counterparts, consistency, along with maintaining momentum, is also something the Lobos continue to struggle with. Therein lies the big question for Lehman – can they get the ship righted with the bulk of their district schedule on the horizon? photo by Tracy Stirman

It’s been an uphill climb so far for the Lehman Lobo offense. Attempting to fill the void left by Jeremy Schilhab has proven to be a tough challenge. Amid those struggles, junior quarterback Jacob Zamora continues to lead a Lobo offense that’s working to progress as the year goes on. Thus far through the year, Zamora has thrown for 224 yards. It’s the running game where the Lobos have fostered most of their offense. Sophomore transfer Jeremiah Brown leads the Lobos in rushing with 187 yards, while Bryan Mendoza has added 112 yards. It’s obtaining the production necessary to keep pace with their opponents that’s hurt the Lobos. Through their first three games, the Lobos have failed to surpass 300 yards of total offense. Lehman has only generated 629 yards of offense in that time frame. Turnovers, miscues and penalties, along with inexperience on the offensive line, have contributed to those problems as well.

It’s been a strange start to the season for the Lehman Lobo defense. Holding opponents off of the scoreboard in the first 12 minutes of their first few games has been a positive. It’s keeping opponents off of the board in the latter three quarters that’s hindered progress. Opponents have scored 118 points on the Lobos after the first quarter of play. In addition, the Lobos have given up 400 or more yards in each of their first three contests. It’s been a season of learning for the Lobos. While Lehman’s defense has struggled, they’ve also been able to generate big plays. Look no further than a 65-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Eddie Villareal against Bowie on Sept. 4. Lehman is led by the play of upperclassmen Richter, Santos and Lakey.
