A
nother year has flown past and the Autumn school term is already upon us. Have those new school shoes been scuffed yet? Have the school jumpers been lost? So welcome to this Autumn issue. We hope you all had a good summer break.
Our Out & About section is a bit different this time. We have a revisit of a local attraction, Manor Heath, and have a closer look at the new council initiative to engage pre-school children, 50 Things to do before you’re 5. This is a very handy tool and a great, free resource for your little ones. As usual, this diary pages have been updated for this issue. These pages are very important to us and we like to keep them as accurate as possible. Don’t forget they are also available online in case you can’t put your hands on a current copy of The Scallymag. Parkrunning in Todmorden
he well known global brand ‘parkrun’ has arrived in upper Calderdale! Specifically at Centre Vale park in Todmorden.
T
Parkrun started in Bushy Park London in 2004 with just 13 participants. It has now spread worldwide; every Saturday at over 1,400 locations in 23 countries, people ready themselves at the start line. All ability’s and ages are welcome with participants at the inaugural event in Todmorden, last March, ranging in age from 4 to 75. There are people of all shapes and sizes, ages and abilities . Anyone who can walk 5k can do a park run. It’s not a race but a great way to exercise for free and in the company of friendly faces, in wonderful surroundings, all while experiencing a great community atmosphere. This inclusive event allows children under 11 to take part as long as they are with an adult. Dogs, pushchairs and buggies are also allowed, which is great for those mums and dads who are struggling to find ways to exercise. Many families attend and run together; a fabulous way to start the weekend. A free activity for all, a great way to socialise, stay healthy and active. The parkrun movement has been shown to impact far beyond physical health. Research has shown that running walking
or volunteering at your local parkrun can help to reduce stress, isolation, anxiety and depression. Hundreds of GP surgeries have now signed up to be ‘parkrun practises’, prescribing parkrun to their patients to improve general health and wellbeing. Registering for parkrun is a simple and quick process of filling in a form on the parkrun website. When registered simply print your individual barcodes (children 4 and over can register) and you are set to go. A great incentive for participants is to see the weekly results uploaded and seeing their personal best time improving week by week or just being able to see they have beaten a friend’s finishing time (but it’s definitely not a race). Centre Vale parkrun takes place every Saturday at 9am and always welcomes new volunteers. There are various different roles to suit everyone including; timing, marshalling, scanning finishers barcodes or even writing the weekly run report. You can sign up via the website www.parkrun.org.uk/ centrevale/ or find the ‘Centre Vale parkrun’ facebook page.
YMCA Uniform Recycling
he service started in the summer of 2017. It’s a simple idea; parents can drop off any outgrown or unused school uniforms, from any school within Calderdale, the staff will sort them and make them available again for anyone who needs them. All items are free to anyone.
Debbie Pearson from the YMCA told us; “When the service was set up we had no idea how popular it would be and each year there are more uniforms available, all thanks to the community of Calderdale and surrounding areas.” The full range of uniform items is available for most schools, including PE tops and socks. There are also many generic items such as trousers, coats and shoes available. “No donated clothing items are wasted.” Debbie went on to explain. “If they are soiled
or marked we bag them up and they go to the YMCA charity shop to be weighed in. “We will also take out-of-date items. For instance Copley and Moorside schools have recently changed their uniforms; all donated items and all the old lost property from the schools were sent abroad to be used in poorer countries, through International Aid.” The shop is open for donations and collections in Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 12noon at 13-15 Crossley Street, Halifax.

A Smoother Start At School with Caterpillar Club at Scout Road Academy
T
his autumn, parents in the Calder Valley will be waving their four to five-year-olds off to start reception class at ‘Big School’ for the first time. For some, it will be a confident new start but, for other families, it can be a worrying time spent wondering how their children will cope.
How to support children through transitions such as starting school is also a hot topic for education experts but a homegrown initiative at Scout Road Academy in Mytholmroyd seems to have come up with the answer. Caterpillar Club is Scout Road’s pre-school playgroup, set up by parents, for parents and it takes place in the school every Monday from 8.30 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. Children join in structured and supported educational play, including crafts to make and take home, games and toys and outdoor activity in the spacious, secure school premises. Then, in the final weeks of summer term, they start joining the ‘Butterflies’ reception class for 45 minutes every week.
Playgroup Leader and Parent, Tess Whitaker explained: “Starting school is a big milestone in a child’s and a family’s life and it can be a difficult experience, especially for children who are shy or find it hard to cope with sudden change. “Caterpillar Club gives children an opportunity to learn and have fun in a small welcoming group. At the same time they are building a good foundation for starting school, including skills like communication and moving from one activity to another. The children become familiar with the school building and with what a school day looks like. “Then we add the extra element of joining the Reception class every Monday so that,
by the end of Summer term, new September starters will already know their own classroom and some older children. It’s the final step in a transition which is as smooth and natural as we can make it!” Caterpillar Club is open to all families with children under five, not just those who would like their children to go to Scout Road Academy. After a free taster session, the cost per session is £2.50 for the first child and £1 for any additional children, with babies free. The cost includes a drink and healthy snack for each child and accompanying parents, plus the craft materials used. Families who would like to try it can simply come along, sign up and pay weekly as they go.
The festival will take place on Saturday 26th October and will include live pumpkin carving demonstrations from the experts at Sand In Your Eye, carving workshops so you can learn the skills to make your own masterpiece at home, food, crafts, live music and story-telling from the wonderful Ursula Holden-Gill. The precise timetable of events for the 2019 Festival will be available soon but, last year there were ghost trails, ‘ How to Trick a Boggart’ Trail and dance performances too, so
keep your eye on the website for more details. If you would like more details about how you can get involved, please contact Liz in the first instance, through the event website - www.halloweenpumpkinfestival.co.uk
Third year of
The Great Pumpikin Festival
T
his October, The Great Pumpkin Festival in Hebden Bridge will be on for the third year and this year the organisers, Hebden Royd Town Council and Sand In Your Eye are inviting local community groups, businesses or schools to get even more involved.
Y
ou may have heard of the bucket list challenge, ‘50 things to do before you die’, but what about ‘50 things to do before you’re 5’? The idea started at St Edmund’s Nursery School, Bradford with the objective of helping to solve the problem of children coming to their first school experience with low literacy levels, language skills, or just a lack of life experiences. There is a huge amount of research from the Department of Education, the Education Foundation and Public Health England showing that early intervention to support the development of language, literacy and communication skills in the under-fives has a profound impact on achievement in
primary and secondary age phases. 50 Things is based on the simple notion that access to fun, low-cost or no-cost experiences with your family is a great way to support and develop young children’s oral skills and confidence, so that they enter primary school much more ready to learn. The 50 Things project launched in Bradford in 2018 and has now spread to other local authorities, including Calderdale, where it launched at Eureka! the National Children’s Museum, in Halifax, on Wednesday 7th August, coinciding with National

50 Ways To Help Your Child Reach Their Full Potential Play Day. The theme for this year is ‘Play builds children’. At the event, Calderdale Council’s Chief Executive, Robin Tuddenham and colleagues from public health and primary care spoke about the importance of child development and how this new scheme aligns with Calderdale’s Vision2024 project, the project aiming to improve all aspects of life in Calderdale by its 50th anniversary in 2024. It is hoped that Calderdale babies under 12 months will be taking part in the ‘50 things’ activities. Their experiences will be shared over the next five years in the run up to them starting school in the year 2024. ’50 things’ activity guides are available as an app on both iPhone and Android devices and a poster version will be given out to parents/carers at the health visiting service’s two year check. The app is available in several regions across West Yorkshire and families have the opportunity to choose their local area in order to access bespoke activities and suggestions. Frog Education has worked closely with the project team to design and develop the app to help bring the scheme as many people as possible, while monitoring take-up and feedback. In the app you can find the list of 50 idea to try with your children throughout Calderdale, including indoor, outdoor, seasonal, home-based and out-and-about activities. You can read about the activity, the benefits your children will get, ideas of how to expand the activity, a list of equipment you will need, a list of key words, some top tips, how this could link in with other activities on the list, even stories to read relating to the activity and how it could especially benefit children with special educational needs! You can
build a ‘Memory bank’ of special moments to look back on and you can share these memories to inspire others in an online community. Activities in Calderdale include visits to local parks, museums, the Piece Hall and the borough’s distinctive countryside. Parents are also encouraged to join their children in simple, home-based fun ideas, including making music, blowing bubbles, sharing books, dressing up, making tasty meals together and much more. Each experience has been suggested by parents, carers and professionals; sifted, developed and written up by early years experts and language specialists, to create a fabulous resource for every child under five and the grown-ups in their life! The Leader of Calderdale Council, Cllr Tim Swift, said: “A child’s development starts long before they reach school and the first 1000 days of life is the most important development time for a person’s future health and wellbeing. “The ’50 things to do before you’re five’ project helps parents share everyday experiences with their children that will support their child to be school ready. “It’s especially exciting that we’ve recruited volunteer parents with their young babies to take part in our Vision2024 Babies project. This will allow us to see the ’50 things’ in action, following families on their journey using the app and seeing the progress of the children over the next five years, culminating with them starting school in 2024.” Get your free app here calderdale.50thingstodo.org or search Google Play or the Apps Store for ‘50 things to do’ from Frog Education Ltd.

Manor Heath Park
M
Halifax HX3 0EB
anor Heath Park in Skircoat Green, Halifax, is a favourite local destination for families but we thought it was about time we went to visit again and see if it still as good as it was and if anything is new. The park is 19 acres in total and open all year round. We drove there but it is accessible by bus from Halifax town centre. There are plenty of brown tourist signs to guide you in; look for the ones with butterflies on them. There are two main gates to the park. The “bottom gate” (on Skircoat Green Road) has some on-street parking (pay and display) but the “top gate” (on Manor Heath Road) has a small car park with about 14 spaces and up to four hours free parking. There is also onstreet parking near the top gate with up to 2 hours free parking. Within the park are a number of attractions to entertain most ages of children. Lots of space with mature trees, to run about in and play games. There is an outdoor gym and a well equipped play area that covers a broad range of ages and abilities; there is a water play area that is advertised to be open from May to October, but it was drained and sealed off when we were there in August; there is a very pretty sunken garden on the site of the original manor house and a walled
“demonstration” garden where Calderdale Council try out different bedding ideas for their other parks, but the main attraction for us was the Jungle Experience. Housed in an old glasshouse, the Jungle experience is a tropical paradise in Halifax. It is maintained at around 21 degrees with a high humidity, so is a lovely and warm whatever the weather outside. There are various zones within the glasshouse where many different species of plants are grown, with plenty of information boards for the grown-ups and storyboards and a fun trail for the children. The “Time Zone” takes you through botanical evolution, from pre-historic plants, through flowering plants and ferns, to modern times and on to a hydroponics demonstration to show how plants may be grown in human colonies on other planets in the future. There is an area of carnivorous plants and a beautiful lily pond. There is also a butterfly zone. When we were there it wasn’t teaming with butterflies, so some eagle eyed spotting was required, but we did see a good few. There are supposed to
be quail in the butterfly zone too, but we weren’t luck enough to spot any of those. A “river” runs through the whole space and is home to hundreds of fish and lots of big terrapins, which were easy to spot basking on the rocks. With entrance to the Jungle Experience just £1 each (2s and under are free) it is extremely good value for money. Well worth a trip. It is open at 10am every day and closes at 3.45pm (3.15pm on a Friday). It is fully accessible with no steps. There are toilets in the park and lots of lovely picnic spots but there is also a small cafe selling jacket potatoes, hot and cold sandwiches and children’s lunch boxes. The cafe has indoor and outdoor seating (dogs are welcome in the outdoor area) and is very reasonably priced. So, next time you want to burn off some energy with your little ones, see something a bit different or just have a couple of hours to kill, a trip to Manor Heath park is highly recommended.
Diary Pages The heart of The Scallymag are the following five, indispensible diary pages. Pre-school and Playgroups usually offer free sessions for children aged 2 and over for 15/30 hours per week during term time. Contact them directly for more information. Out of School Clubs are for older children who require care outside normal school hours or during holidays. Those listed take all children, not just those who attend any associated school. The bottom section shows opening times for places you might like to visit regularly with your child.
The centre spread is the Pre-school Diary. White background is for drop-in sessions, shaded background is for bookable activities. All sessions will require an adult to remain with the child at all times. Most activities charge a small fee; all Children’s Centre services are free, with any donations gratefully received. Please phone ahead before setting out as details can change at any time.

Julia Donaldson and The Gruffalo

visit the Book Case.
ow exciting! We were over the moon that the amazing Julia Donaldson came to visit The Book Case for Independent Booksellers week and even more excited that she brought the Gruffalo along with her! Julia stayed with us for the afternoon and while she was inside signing books for delighted children the Gruffalo wowed the queue that stretched all the way down the street, as well as causing excitement amongst passers by. They were also entertained by Julia’s husband Malcolm who played Gruffalo songs on his guitar. It was a fantastic day, and lovely to see so many children inspired and excited by books and reading.

Working from a studio in Halifax, Chris Mould is most famous for his amazing illustrations, including for the bestselling Truth Pixie books written by Matt Haig. He has just completed a stunning illustrated version of The Iron Man, the classic tale by poet Ted Hughes, who was of course local to the Calder Valley. If you would like to meet Chris and find out more about his work, and maybe even see him creating a drawing, you can catch him at the Book Corner in Halifax on the 6th October where he will be drawing an Iron Man mural on the wall of the shop. He will also be at the Todmorden festival on 2nd November as well as at school events locally.
Harry Heape
Hebden Bridge author Harry Heape’s Shiny Pippin books are a firm favourite with local children, and he’s often to be found sharing them at local schools. The latest story is Shiny Pippin and The Impossible Door and it’s an exciting romp featuring Shiny and her friends. A very strange door in Granny’s shed leads to a crazy new adventure for the gang featuring ghost monkeys and a magical golden chain! Harry Heape often does local storytime and will be visiting schools in Todmorden as part of the Todmorden Festival. If you see him make sure you say hello!
Liz Flanagan
Liz Flanagan is a local children’s author who has written for all ages. New in paperback, Dragon Daughter is an exciting fantasy adventure, perfect for ages 9-14. In a land where dragons used to rule the skies, servant girl Milla witnesses a murder and finds herself caring for the last four dragon eggs. o you have a picky eater in your house? Me too! And if, like me, you have tried to do a little research on the matter, you might be left feeling like a hopeless failure as a parent.
AS SEEN ON
Articles that say such things like “Children develop picky eating habits by modelling their parents’ fussy eating habits,” are not helpful. Especially when you notice, as is the case in our house, one child will try everything I place in front of him, with gusto, while the other went through a phase of only eating food if it was yellow! I weaned them both on the same food, at the same age, in the same house with the same mealtime routines. There must be more to it. So I did a bit of research and have found out the following, which will hopefully help you to understand and better cope with your picky eater. Most food aversion simply comes down to the instinct to avoid being poisoned, which is very sensible. Humans have a natural aversion to bitter and sour tastes, because most toxins are either bitter or sour. So it makes sense that, when a baby becomes a toddler, when he first becomes mobile and is off exploring the world for himself, biology puts this natural aversion to foul tastes into overdrive. Most children develop their ‘selective’ eating habits around the age of two when this aversion is at a peak. As a child gets older, heading towards adulthood, experience starts to play a part in avoiding toxins, so the aversion to these tastes decreases. Adults have a much higher tolerance to bitter and sour than toddlers do. However, some children seem much more adverse than others. This may be down to one (or both) of two genetic variations. First, researchers have managed to pin-point a particular genotype responsible for extra sensitivity to bitter taste. So tolerance of certain tastes can, and does, vary between individuals, even within a family. This might explain why your child hates a food that you find quite nice. Secondly, twin studies have suggested that Neophobia (the scientific term for a reluctance to eat new food) is also down to genes.

Being Mum By Josie Pritchard
PICKY EATERS Then there is the physics. Size for size, kids need far more energy than adults. Of course they are still growing but also, their small size means they have a relatively high surface area, so need more energy to keep warm. Plus, their shorter digestive tracts prefer foods with smaller bulk that is easily digested. So they naturally (and this is observed in many animals, not just humans) opt for the high energy foods. Given a choice, they will go for the sugar. So, taking this biological approach, what can you do to ensure your picky child gets a well balanced and healthy diet? A child’s appetite can vary hugely from week to week, depending on growth spurts. So if you think your child is having a particularly hungry few days, or appears to have gone off food completely, don’t panic; go with it. If they are hungry, offer them healthy snacks. Try not to worry about spoiling their appetite for the next meal because, if you make them wait too long between food, their blood sugar levels will dip which may make them feel ill, maybe even nauseous, which will kill their appetite anyway. Also, try not to become the food police when it comes to snacks. ‘Treat’ foods become all the more alluring if they are banned, leaving you with a fight or a sulk when you decline. If they are not hungry, don’t try to force it. Studies have shown that pressuring children to eat usually has the opposite effect and they will actually eat less, especially when being asked to eat something they don’t like. Often children forced to eat food they hate carry that hatred on into adulthood (liver - sorry mum). It helps to be positive. Throughout the animal kingdom, and humans are no exception, babies learn from adults and peers. They are more likely to try a food if they see an adult eating it or their best friend loves it. Humans also have the advantage of rational thought and, it has been shown that explaining the virtues of healthy food and
the consequences of an unhealthy diet to preschoolers, is more likely to get them to eat their vegetables. If your child is gets stuck on a favourite or is Neophobic (averse to trying new foods), keep trying with new fruits and veg, presented in new and varied ways. Studies have reported that children who were encouraged to try different vegetables each day, for two weeks, increased their liking and consumption of veg. This works on babies too; they are more likely to eat a new flavour if they are exposed to new flavours often. Tread carefully though - one new flavour per day is enough and remember that forcing a child to eat something they don’t like will backfire. Going back to the ‘avoiding being poisoned’ thing, human biology has a very effective mechanism to warn about possible toxins. If you taste a new food and begin to feel ill soon after, whether caused by the food or not, you will probably develop an aversion to the smell and taste of that food. So hold back on the new tastes and flavours if your child is under the weather, just before a long journey or in any other situation where nausea is possible, or they could begin to associate that food with illness for the rest of their life. Remember though, if a child says he hates a food, it is worth checking for other symptoms. Food sensitivity and allergy is common but some foods may cause acid reflux or migraines in the child, which they may find difficult to explain to you. Finally, is your picky eater in fact just a purist? Many children, and actually many cultures around the world, prefer to know exactly what they are eating and do not like to see food drenched in opaque sauces or mixed up in mystery stews. Again, like most of the above, it will come down to the psychology of not wanting to be poisoned so, perhaps, it’s actually all very sensible after all!

Baked Fruit with Ginger and Cardamom Syrup By Richard Dalby
T
his is a very easy and quick recipe • for a dessert which • • wouldn’t be out of place in a fine dining restaurant. The tastes are exotic and • sublime. I’ve often made • this with rhubarb and apple, though any soft fruit could be substituted. I’ve a hunch it would also be a great way of cooking diced pumpkin, I might just give that a try at Hallowe’en! The baking process creates a wonderful syrup, a beautifully lush harmony of ginger and cardamom.
Ingredients 100g caster sugar 1½ teaspoons ground ginger ½ teaspoon ground cardamom (or seeds from 6-8 cardamom pods, finely ground in a pestle and mortar) 800g fresh fruit sliced (such as rhubarb, apples, pears, plums or peaches) Ice cream or yogurt to serve

Method Preheat the oven to 180C / 350F / Gas mark 4 Put the sugar, ground ginger and ground cardamom into a bowl and mix together. Place the fruit in an oven proof dish, and sprinkle over the sugar and spice mix, making sure the fruit is evenly coated. Cover with foil and bake until tender and still retaining its shape – this can take between 20 to 35 minutes depending on the thickness of the fruit. The sugar and spice mixture will have become a luscious syrup. When the fruit is tender, remove from the oven and gently place in a bowl, Drizzle over with the syrup. Lovely served either hot or cold with ice cream or yogurt.

have recently changed jobs and now spend a lot of time working while on the move - on trains and in hotels etc. Could this be related to increased pain in my neck and shoulders? And what can I do to help? The increased use of laptops for flexible working and working from home over recent years has been blamed for a rise in the incidents of neck and shoulder problems as well as headaches. Currently about 14% of the workforce spend a significant amount of their time working from home and this is on the rise. This, coupled with the explosion of social media, means that more of our leisure time is spent on a computer, tablet or phone leaving us vulnerable to long periods of poor posture. Bad posture at a laptop is almost inevitable because of the way laptops are designed. The keyboard, being attached to the screen, causes you to hunch over the desk with your head in a forward position. This loads the spine and strains the muscles, causing pain and stiffness. Also, as the keyboard is smaller than a regular keyboard, your arms are often at a strange angle, with your wrists twisted inwards. This increases the compression at your wrist causes problems like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. All these problems are amplified when using a laptop on your knees, with the added risk of “toasted knee syndrome” where the heat from the laptop can damage the skin on your legs, with temperatures rising to 52 deg C.
However there are ways you can make your laptop safer and more comfortable. • Always put your laptop on a stable base where there is support for your arms, not on your lap. • If possible, use a separate keyboard and mouse so the laptop can be raised up on a stand with the screen at eye level. If you are going to use your laptop for a long time without needing to move it, think about using a separate monitor. • Adopt a good sitting posture with lower back support, and ensure that other desk equipment is within reach. • Take regular breaks from your desk and stretch your muscles and joints. • If you are moving around, carry your laptop in a backpack or a wheeled case to minimise spine strain. • Get into good habits before the aching starts. Neck, shoulder, back and headache problems often gradually build up over time. • If you think you are getting aches and pains related to computer use, consult a physiotherapist. They can assess your problems and give you simple targeted exercises and hands-on treatment to alleviate the pain.
