Welcome To

The Winter ‘19 edition of The Scallymag for Todmorden and Hebden Bridge

I

am writing this on Bonfire night. The heating is on, Halloween is over, bonfires will soon be all finished and Summer is a distant memory. Christmas is just around the corner and,

It focuses on applying for a place on-line, explaining procedure but, more importantly, giving the key dates for submission of forms. Don’t miss the deadline! Also this issue we have a large number of changes and additions to our diary pages. We do try to keep these pages as up-to-date and accurate as possible so, if you spot any mistakes or omissions, please let us know. As always, I need to thank friends, readers, contributors and advertisers alike for their support and loyalty. I really couldn’t do this without you! Happy Christmas everyone!

despite the constant complaints that it gets earlier each year, I find there is so much to do, cards to write, friends and family to catch up with, gifts to plan and acquire, not to mention the big day itself, that it can take me two months to get organised! We’ve got a busy issue for you this time; lots of local news, all our regular features plus our ever popular article about primary school admissions in Calderdale, aimed at parents of three-to-four year olds.

Helping young children to stay active

Rugbytots Launches at Todmorden Sports Centre

A

new initiative to help parents and carers come up with ways for 2 to 4-year-olds to get a healthy amount of physical activity has been launched in Calderdale.

R

ugbytots for Halifax, Rochdale and Burnley are pleased to announce their launch in the Calder Valley.

Parents and children at two Calderdale Children’s Centres were amongst the first in Yorkshire and the Humber to try out Active Imaginations, an online resource of simple and fun activities that are free or low cost, can be done indoors or outdoors, in open or limited space and in a range of different situations. The purpose of Active Imaginations is to collect and share ideas that inspire the imagination of children and parents, in a way that supports the Chief Medical Officer Guidelines that children of preschool age, who are capable of walking unaided, should be physically active for at least 180 minutes (three hours) per day. Whilst launching with activities, including such things as sock basketball and bottle bowling, the Active Imaginations team were filming with families throughout Yorkshire to create new ideas that can be shared on their social media channels and website at www. activeimaginations.co.uk Calderdale Council is one of five local authorities to take part in the project in partnership with Public Health England and The Yorkshire and Humber Association of Directors of Public Health. Cllr Faisal Shoukat, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Cohesion, said: “We want all children in Calderdale to have the best start in life. An important part of this is to be physically active from an early age. Families have been consulted and were excited by the idea of simple ideas that they could do at home and in a range of different situations. Young children have amazing imaginations but, for parents, it can be difficult to know where to start. The Active Imaginations project supports and inspires them to get their children moving more.” On Wednesday 25 September, the Active Imaginations initiative was launched at Buddy Bears at Illingworth Community Children’s Centre and at Healthy Honey Bees at Little Stars, Parkinson Lane Children’s Centre. Working with parents to help young children develop well is part of the Council’s Wellbeing Strategy and was also the focus of the Calderdale Council’s Director of Public Health’s recent annual report. Every child deserves the best start in life and helping young people to reach their full potential is a key part of the Vision2024 for Calderdale, ambitions for the borough in the run-up to its 50th birthday in 2024.

They held a launch event on 13th October at Todmorden Sports Centre and will be running two classes there on a Sunday morning for age groups 2 to 3½ and 3½+. The younger group is currently full and there are only a very limited number of places left for the older group. Kath, who runs the classes, told us more; “At Rugbytots we create an environment that embodies the values of Teamwork; Respect, Discipline and Sportsmanship yet, at the same time, we make it really fun. We encourage parents to get involved in the games too, so be prepared to run across the jungle, wade through the quick sand or sprint through Rugbytots Valley avoiding all the smoking boulders. Get ready to protect your egg, launch a missile or attack the pirates and seize the ship. All this, of course, whilst trying to avoid the evil side lines! “Our fun, structured play sessions take children on a journey of sporting imagination with engaging and energetic coaches supporting them every step of the way whilst teaching how to catch, pass, kick, run with the ball and play as part of a team.” For more information and to book your FREE taster session, contact Kath - Kath@rugbytots. co.uk / 0345 3130065

KidsFest Again

T

odmorden KidsFest will take place on Saturday December 7th this year, at Todmorden Town Hall between 12:00 and 3:00.

For those of you who have not ventured to KidsFest before, it is described as “An afternoon of glittery, messy fun that’s free to everyone”. All the wonderful activities are provided by local groups, churches, clubs, associations, etc. purely for the joy of seeing so many families having some fun in the run up to Christmas. It really is the best example of kindness at this wonderful time of year. Top tip: bring some carrier bags with you to carry all your children’s new creations home.

Can You Give Scouts A Hand?

D

o you think you know about Scouting? Forget Knobbly knees, big hats and woggles, Scouting offers fun, challenge and everyday adventure to over 400,000 girls and boys across the UK.

Offering over 200 different activities from abseiling and archery to drama, street sports and water zorbing, Scouting helps 6-18 year olds grow in confidence, achieve their full potential and become active members of their communities. This is only possible through the efforts of 100,000 volunteers who also enjoy the fun and friendship of Scouting. Trusted by nearly a million parents each week, the movement welcomes members from all backgrounds, faiths and cultures. The 8th/26th Calder Valley Scout Group meet at the Central Methodist Church, Todmorden on a Thursday at 6:00 (Cubs) and 7:30 (Scouts and Explorers) and Friday at 5:30 (Beavers) and can trace its origins back for 90 years! They are a vibrant and active Scout Group, with a membership of over 125 young people aged from 6 to 16 years. However, the group is desperate for additional adult support in

T

order to remain viable or even expand. Dave Payne, leader of the group, told us, “We can accommodate people who can only commit to occasional help and those prepared to offer help on a more regular basis. As well as our face to face activities with the young people we also need help in ‘backstage’ activities (equipment, clerical, etc.). Whatever skills you might have, we will be able to make use of them. “ If we do not get additional adult help then we face the very real probability of restricting the number of young people that we can cater for, and the activities that we can offer.” On the right you will see some FAQs about volunteering as an adult helper in the scouting movement. If you would like to know more please contact Dave on dave@ caldervalleyscouts.org.uk

Q. Do I need to have been a Scout/Cub when I was young? A. No, what is important is an ability to relate to young people, and an interest in learning new skills Q. Will I have to wear a uniform? A. We have both uniformed and nonuniformed adult helpers. We would recommend anyone who is potentially interested in helping to take things slowly and see where they think they will best fit in. Q. What about CRB checks? A. All adult helpers have to undergo a CRB check before they can start to help with your people, this is the law of the land. This involves the completion of a relatively simple questionnaire (which we will help you with). There are no costs involved, and the process takes a couple of weeks. Q. Does this mean I can’t help if I have a criminal record? A. This would depend on what the record was for, and how long since the offence. Do not assume the worst, if you have any concerns then we will try and address them. Q. What time would I be expected to commit to? A. Ideally we would want the helpers to be available for the regular weekly meetings, as far as is possible. There is also a training commitment for all uniformed leaders, but we are talking about a few hours a year. Apart from the above the time that you give will be very much up to you.

Dippy on Tour: A Natural History Adventure

he Natural History Museum’s superstar dinosaur, Dippy, is currently on a record-breaking UK tour and he lands in Rochdale in February next year.

Dippy’s star power has already drawn more than 1 million visitors to venues across the tour, and thousands more are expected to visit him in Number One Riverside, his only North West stop. Accompanying the dinosaur in Rochdale will be a major familyfriendly exhibition at Touchstones Rochdale. Suitable for all ages, visitors can explore all aspects of the natural world, from the dark swamplands of millions of years ago to our future planet and what it might look like. Dippy will be in Rochdale from 10 February to 28 June 2020 www.visitrochdale.com/dippy

Revamp at Todmorden Sports Centre

E

xtensive improvements at Todmorden Sports Centre, to bring the facilities up-to-date and ensure people can continue to enjoy them for years to come, have now been completed. The work, intended to boost the customer experience and help tackle the climate emergency, included the addition of a hightech UV filtration system in the swimming pool, meaning a more environmentallyfriendly approach to disinfecting the pool and better water quality. Improvements to the moveable pool floor have also been made. The Council has also improved the energy

efficiency of the centre’s heating system to help tackle the climate emergency and protect Calderdale’s distinctive environment. This is all part of the Council’s “Re:fit” programme aimed at reducing energy usage, carbon dioxide emissions and costs, in a range of its buildings. Find out more about the work being done in Calderdale to tackle the climate emergency at www.calderdale.gov.uk/climateemergency Active Calderdale and addressing the climate emergency, declared in Calderdale in January 2019, are part of the “Vision 2024 for Calderdale”. In 2024 the borough will celebrate its 50th birthday. Kip McGrath Comes To Tod

ast month, Hannah Morrison opened a Kip McGrath Education Centre in Todmorden, having taught for over ten years in primary schools across Calderdale. Prior to teaching, Hannah

worked at libraries across the authority. Whilst working at Todmorden library, she engaged local schools and children through delivering educational and storytelling workshops. It was during this time that Hannah realised that she wanted to work predominantly with children in an educational setting. Since qualifying as a primary school teacher, with a flair for motivating disengaged pupils through innovative approaches, Hannah quickly moved into subject leadership and senior leadership roles. Whilst developing skills in school leadership and management, it began to steer her away from face-to-face teaching on ‘ground level’ which was her real skill and passion. This year, with her own daughter having just graduated from university and moving to Manchester, Hannah felt it was the right time to do something different, yet still within the context of improving outcomes for children. With over 40 years of proven methodology, Kip McGrath was the obvious choice as an educational model. At Kip McGrath, all tuition is provided by fully qualified teachers, which is how it should be,

B

as children who need extra support to thrive require strong teaching with a thorough knowledge of the curriculum and an in-depth understanding of how to teach it. Visiting the other Kip McGrath Centres across the North, meant that Hannah could see first-hand how the Kip McGrath programme works to accelerate progress and attainment for children who may not be making the progress they should within a traditional classroom setting. The Kip classrooms are very different to school classrooms. There is a ‘grown up’ feel and a focus on independence. A calm routine to the way lessons run suits children who have found the school setting and its pace a little overwhelming. The way in which children progress through the programme works well, with a mixture of 1:1 focussed teaching and independent manual and computer activities. All of this happens within a small group which creates a real learning buzz and space for independence. Learning steps are targeted and achievable, giving children very secure building blocks on which to make next steps. Children receive instant feedback and are able to respond to this in order to improve. It is lovely to see how, often for the first time, children begin to really understand concepts and apply their knowledge in different ways. Very quickly, children develop a ‘can do’ attitude which impacts their entire demeanour and

wellbeing. Since opening, Hannah tutors a range of children from primary and secondary schools who come for weekly support with maths and English. The centre is now able to provide online tuition for children who may feel more comfortable in their own homes, or who may struggle to get to the centre. For anyone who would like to book a free assessment, or to find out how the Kip McGrath programme can help your child, phone 01706 818886 or email todmorden@ kipmcgrath.co.uk. Free assessments can also be booked online through the website at www.kipmcgrath.co.uk/todmorden.

Burnley Road Academy Moves Into The Woods

urnley Road Academy in Mytholmroyd have been spending a lot of time this year developing integrated forest activities into their curriculum. They are lucky to have a woodland on site and wanted to develop pupils’ understanding and respect for nature.

“We have persevered and had lots of fun in spite of the wet, chilly weather. Activities have included searching for wildlife, making mini beasts out of clay, building and testing waterproof dens and harvesting vegetables from our polytunnel. We have improved our bush craft techniques whilst whittling sticks into interesting shapes, made bird nests from hay and wool, found the ages of some of our trees and learnt some tree names. We have also begun thinking about the sustainability of woodland areas and forest maintenance, and cleared parts of the woodland to make a path through the wood. We are looking forward to our next sessions in November.” Pupils benefit from forest activities in many ways, including improved team working skills, creativity, well-being, confidence, sensitivity towards nature and respect for the environment.

January saw the trial period begin coordinated by Mrs Hutchinson, a qualified teacher and Outdoor Learning Practitioner. The children have been having weekly sessions in the woodland doing all sorts of activities. Headteacher, Mrs Cope, told us more;

olton Abbey has been one of those places I have been meaning to take the children to for years and just never got around to it. However, since my role as ‘Chief Holiday

Entertainer’ during the school breaks has become more challenging (due to my children not liking playgrounds anymore or telling me they are bored after five minutes if there is not enough space for them to explore) I have begun to look further afield for inspiration. The Bolton Abbey Estate is made up of 30,000 acres of countryside with over 80 miles of footpaths to walk, run, play and explore. It has been managed by the Devonshire family since 1755. Let them get bored here I thought!

Our destination was within an easy hour’s drive. On arrival there are three different car parks to choose from so check out their website first to see which one will be best to suit where you want to spend your time whilst you are there. All the car parks charge the same fee of £10.00 per car. This does seem a steep charge however, if you are visiting for the day and you have lots of passengers (plus a picnic in the boot) then it’s quite reasonable. I parked in the middle Riverside car park, which is adjacent to the River Wharfe and close to the entrance to Strid Wood, a stunningly, beautiful ancient woodland. There are many footpaths that can be walked from here, most of them flat, so good accessibility for pushchairs and wheelchairs. We took a walking route up to an aqueduct, crossed the river and completed a circular walk that took in the Priory Church and ruins of an Augustinian Priory, a place where people lived and worshipped until 1539 when the dissolution of monasteries stripped the Priory of its assets. This Church and ruins lie at the heart of the Bolton Abbey Estate and are free to wander around. Close to the priory ruins are the ancient stepping stones which was the old crossing point for the lay workers at the Priory. This offers both a challenge, for someone wanting to complete

the crossing of the sixty stones, or amusement, for those enjoying watching their attempts, as some of the stones are quite a distance apart. Further up the river from here is a large beach area, a great place to enjoy a picnic or even build a sandcastle if you take your bucket and spade! Throughout this coming Winter there are many family–friendly events being held here, including visits from Father Christmas (extra charges apply). For those interested in nature, there is an ‘I Spy’ trail around Strid Wood spotting and matching pictures on a free card that can be picked up from the Cavendish Pavillion, adjacent to the Riverside car park. Bolton Abbey is a well-managed estate and not overly commercialised like others. There are toilet facilities at each of the car parks, with cafes and tea rooms located nearby. There is lots of space to let the children run, play ball games and just generally let off steam and do their own thing, as well as numerous walking trails. We visited Bolton Abbey in October on a cold but bright Autumn day. We did a short circular walk and had a picnic with a flask of hot chocolate by the river and it was a lovely, enjoyable day out for all of us. No one got bored. In fact, we agreed to return again during the long summer break. Result! By Tracey Sunderland

Moroccan Carrot Soup By Richard Dalby

T

his has to be the ultimate soup to revive the family on a cold wintry day. It has a rich sweetness from the carrots and the lovely gentle spices will warm your bones. The coriander sauce is optional, but is luscious and adds even more depth of flavour. Homemade soup is so easy and cheap to make and knocks spots off anything you can buy from the supermarket.

Ingredients for the soup: • • • • • • • • • •

25g unsalted butter 1cm piece of fresh ginger, finely chopped or grated ¼ teaspoon ground turmeric ¼ teaspoon ground cumin 1 medium brown onion, chopped 1 leek, white part only, chopped 450g carrots, peeled and cut into small chunks ¼ teaspoon paprika 1 litre vegetable stock Salt and black pepper to season

for the coriander sauce: • • • • • •

120g fresh coriander 1 garlic clove, crushed ¼ teaspoon ground coriander ¼ teaspoon ground cumin 100ml olive oil Juice of ¼ lemon

Method •

• •

Heat the butter in a large pan, add the ginger, turmeric and cumin and gently heat for 2 minutes. Add the onion, leek and carrots and cook for 5-10 minutes until softened. Stir in the paprika and then pour in the vegetable stock. Bring up to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes. Allow to cool and purée in a blender, then reheat and season to taste.

To make the coriander sauce, put all the ingredients in a blender and blitz to a smooth paste. Serve the soup in bowls, with the coriander sauce drizzled on top, along with some crusty fresh bread.

Top Tips for Christmas Face Painting By Julie Dee www.faceace.co.uk www.facebook.com/JulieFaceace/

T

he clocks have gone back and those love-to-hate seasonal anthems are blaring loudly in the shops. It can mean only one thing Christmas will soon be upon us! Filling the holidays can be tricky this time of year – the kids are excitable, the

latest gadgets soon lose favour and trying to organise games can be as successful as cat herding! What can you do to add some interest to those cold winter days? I have been face painting at Christmas events for many years now and it’s hugely popular with all ages. I thought I’d share some tips about how to get the most out of the experience if you fancy trying it yourself on your own children.

Here are my top tips for fun festive faces Use good quality products

Yes, you can buy things from the discount stores but as someone in the business, I wouldn’t touch them. You have to pay for quality. You may be Picasso but if you’re painting with something akin to a wax crayon, trust me, it won’t be your finest hour. Snazaroo is good for beginners if you want a safe brand that’s readily available

Less is more

Every professional knows that less is more when it comes to face painting little ones. Highlight their cuteness rather than swamping their tiny features.

Keep it simple

It’s always better to do a simple design well rather than a great one badly. Also, most young children don’t want to sit still for too long.

Be inspired!

There are plenty of tutorials on YouTube to assist you as well as ideas on Pinterest. Go for ones aimed at parents so you don’t feel overwhelmed. You could even get the kids to design their own face on a paper plate first – another fun activity in itself!

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise

Face paint can be drying, especially for young skin. Moisturise well before and afterwards to minimise chances of staining or itching.

Patch test or small design to begin with

For first timers, stick to small areas of skin or do a patch test first. Anyone can have a reaction to face paint so better to be safe than sorry and contain the risk.

Using glitter?

Think cosmetic glitter NEVER craft glitter. It is a different grade and more likely to cause damage to the eyes if it accidentally gets in. I always tell children to close their eyes before applying glitter anywhere on the face. So, those are my top tips for fantastic festive faces - and if it doesn’t work, you can always call in the professionals.

18

Mainly don’t be put off by having a go. Some of the best memories we have are of when our parents got involved with an arts or crafts project. Kids really remember this stuff. Everything can be bought these days but there is no substitute for the fun you can have doing it yourself. Yes - it won’t be perfect, but you are making memories with your child and that’s priceless. What are you waiting for?

A

recent news report stated that the UK has now lost its measlesfree status. What exactly does that mean and why is it happening?

Let’s Talk About Measles Measles is a ‘contagious’ disease. That means the virus is spread very easily by coughs and sneezes. When a person contracts the disease they usually recover in seven to ten days, during which time their immune system has created antibodies and they can never contract measles again. However, while ill, they will have passed the infection on to many people around them who will go through the same process until, eventually, a significantly large proportion of the population is immune so the virus can no longer reach new, infectable people and the instances of the disease begin to reduce. This is what is known as ‘herd immunity’ and it happened in the early part of the 20th century. However, as new children were born, instances began to rise again, peaking at over 750,000 in 1962. The measles vaccine was introduced in 1963. Vaccination means you can become immune to the disease without having to suffer the disease and, by 2016, the UK had vaccinated over 95% of the population. This is the target set by health experts to achieve herd immunity and so the World Health Organisation declared the UK to be measles free. This didn’t mean that measles had gone (like happened to the smallpox virus) but just that no new outbreaks originated in the UK. However, the cases of the disease in the UK are on the rise again and the WHO has now removed the measles-free status. The rise in cases is completely due to lower than required up take of the free, combined Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR) vaccine. The NHS offers all parents

an option to give this vaccine to their child at 12 months of age, with a booster sometime around school starting age. Figures from 2018 show the national up take figure is just 87% (90.2% in Calderdale), way below what is required to keep the whole community safe. There are many reasons why parents opt out of the vaccination programme. Some believe their children may react to the vaccine, some believe the long term safety of the vaccine is not yet proven (56 years for the measles vaccine, 31 years for the combined MMR vaccine) and others believe natural immunity gained from suffering the disease is better, despite lots of evidence from health experts to counter all these arguments. However, there is a problem. Many other countries across Europe are seeing the same decreased up take of the vaccine, resulting in large outbreaks of the disease. This inevitably means the virus will reach the UK and there will be increased cases here. The lack of herd immunity means the virus will spread, probably reaching the most vulnerable. Those most at risk from serious complications after contracting the measles virus include teenagers and adults, children with weakened immune systems (from an existing condition), children with poor diets

19

and babies under one year old. That final group is a problem because babies cannot be vaccinated until they are 12 months old and so rely completely on the herd immunity to keep them safe. The usual symptoms of the disease include runny nose, watery or sore eyes that may be sensitive to light, a fever and general aches and pains. Then the rash, which can often start in the mouth. Overall, not very pleasant but more serious complications can, and do, occur. Diarrhoea and vomiting leading to dehydration, ear infections, laryngitis, pneumonia, bronchitis and croup are common. The high fever may cause fits. Frequently measles can cause hepatitis, meningitis or encephalitis and, in rare cases it can lead to serious eye disorders, possibly including sight loss, heart or nervous system problems or a fatal brain condition known as subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). In pregnancy it can cause miscarriage or stillbirth. In England and Wales, in 2017, there were 284 reported cases of measles. In 2018 that rose to 991. In the first quarter of 2019 there were 230 cases. Until the virus is eliminated globally we will continue to see cases come to the UK. We need to get the vaccination rate back on track. If you have not had your children vaccinated, please speak to your doctor or health visitor. If you are nervous about the vaccine they will be happy to discuss your fears. This awful disease can be eliminated completely, if everyone plays their part.

Schools

How To Pick A School Obviously, a good place to start would be to get a list of all schools in your chosen area, available from the council website. You can then shorten your list by looking at their latest Ofsted reports but, then best way to get a feel for the school is to visit. Check when/if they have open days or make an appointment with the Headteacher. Some points you may like to consider include: • Does your child need special attention? Are they particularly bright or have special needs? Can the school accommodate and support this? • Does your child have keen interests? Does the school have sports teams or other extra-curricular activities that might interest your child? • Do you require wrap-around care? Does the school offer this and how much does it cost? • How big is the school? What is the average class size? What would be the range of age and ability in a single class? Would this suit your child? • How would your child get to school? Could your child walk to school and is the walking route safe? Or are buses available? • Does your child want to be with their pre-school friends? Then, when you visit, look out for: • A happy school with high moral, in both the staff and the children. • A warm and welcoming atmosphere. • High quality and varied work, displayed with pride. • Enthusiastic pupils, happy to ask as well as answer your questions. • Any other resources, such as a well stocked library, a modern computer suite, sports facilities, etc.

Primary School Applications

C

alderdale’s on-line admission application system is now the main route for all applications for primary school reception places. As this is the now the case, we thought

Who does this apply to?

Any child who turns 5 between 1st September 2020 and 31st August 2021 is legally obliged to start full time education at the beginning of the term following their fifth birthday. In Calderdale, children are able to start school at the beginning of the Autumn term in the academic year in which they turn five. So children born between 1st September 2015 and 31st August 2016 may start school in September 2020.

How do I apply?

Visit www.calderdale.gov.uk and follow the links residents/education-and-learning/ schools If you are new to the service, you will need to register. You will be prompted to provide a password and complete registration. You will then receive an email with a unique link. Once you click on this link you will be able to complete your online application. There is also a guide for parents applying online should you experience any difficulties.

When do I apply?

You can apply 24 hours a day, seven days a week from 19 November 2019 to 15 January 2020. Once you have submitted your application, you will receive an email confirming your preferences. You can view and/or amend the online application anytime during the period. If you amend your application, please ensure that you ‘resubmit’ it. If you have resubmitted your application, you will receive a further email detailing your revised preferences. Your latest application will be used when allocating school places.

Can I choose any school?

The word used in law about school admissions is ‘preference’ not ‘choice’. This means that you can state which school you would prefer your child to attend, but there is no guarantee that the application will be successful. You can list any school you wish as a preference including schools outside the Calderdale area.

it might be helpful if we highlight some of the more frequently asked questions about applying on-line.

Do I need to apply if my What happens if the child is already in nursery or Authority cannot allocate I have an older child at the any of my preferred schools? The Authority has a duty to allocate a school? Yes. The application procedure and timetable is the same for all applicants, regardless of whether the child is already attending a nursery or whether there is an older child. If there is a sibling already attending the preferred school you need to make sure that you state this in the relevant section of the online application.

My child is being looked after by a grandparent/ relative/childminder/friend. Can I use their address on the application?

No. The address used for the application must be the child’s current permanent residence. Where parental responsibility is held by more than one person and those persons reside in separate properties, the child’s ordinary place of residence will normally be deemed to be that property where the parent receives child benefit. The Local Authority reserves the right to request further evidence of a child’s permanent residence if this is deemed necessary.

How are primary school allocations made?

Once all the ‘on time’ applications have been received, the admissions authority for the school will consider all the preferences for that school and, if there are more applications than there are places available, the admissions oversubscription criteria will be applied. The oversubscription criteria for each school can be found on the council website. Where a child could be offered more than one of the preferred schools, the highest of these preferences will be offered based upon the parental preference order on the application. No child should receive an offer at more than one school.

school place to all children living within Calderdale. If none of the preferred schools can be allocated, the Authority will allocate the school which is closest to the family home where vacancies exist. This will be within a two mile walking route for primary schools wherever possible and may not be your closest school. For residents outside of Calderdale, your home local authority is responsible for allocating a school place if your Calderdale preference(s) cannot be met.

When and how will I receive my allocation letter?

National Offer Day is 16 April 2020. If you live in Calderdale, the offer of a school place will be made by Calderdale Council. Your offer will be sent to the email address you have used for your application. Alternatively, you can log onto your account and view the offer information. If you live outside the Calderdale area, the offer of a school place will be made by your own local authority.

I have not been allocated my preferred school - what do I do now?

With your allocation notification, you will receive further information relating to the reallocation and appeals processes. You can submit a reallocation request using the online form.

Where can I get advice on the admissions process?

The Authority recommends that parents/ guardians contact the schools admissions service on cyps.admissions@calderdale.gov. uk or 01422 392617 to obtain appropriate advice and guidance. The Authority cannot be responsible for advice taken from any other source.

News from Todmorden High School CATERING UPDATE

We have been pleased to receive such honest feedback from all members of our community regarding our food and dining hall service this half term. We have listened and responded. In the last few weeks we have seen the re-launch of a plated offering and re-usable knives and forks. Our ‘Grab-&-Go’ stations, which offer pasta pots and hot wraps, serve their items in biodegradable containers with bamboo forks. We support the stand against single use plastics and polystyrene and care for our environment. We have increased the number of water fountains in our school and we will soon be introducing juice stations. We will be championing our refillable bottle campaign further in the next few weeks. Meal portion sizes have increased and queuing time is reducing. We are still not where we want to be but we are determined and united in our effort to continually improve together.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT

Students will perform in their Seasonal celebration on Thursday 19 December 2019, from 6.30pm. Attendees should arrive for 6.00pm to be greeted with a mince pie and shown to their seats. It is a wonderful way to head in to the winter break and a joy to come together through laughter, song and dance.

Health Matters

I

am very keen to get myself fitter through doing more exercise. However the aching and stiffness that comes on me the following day is putting me off continuing. Do you have any advice? Most non-contact sports injuries are caused by an inadequate warm up. We all know about warming up, but it is crucial you do it thoroughly and properly if you are to avoid any injuries. ‘Warming up’ the muscles mainly means stretching them from their relaxed state to a state where they are ready to do some exercise. However you need to remember that you should get some blood pumping before you start to stretch muscles - without a good blood supply the muscle fibres can’t lengthen properly. So spend at least a minute jogging on the spot, or have a brisk walk, to wake up your circulation before you start to stretch. Muscle takes at least 10 seconds to start to alter in length and stretches need to be held for at least 20 seconds and nearer a minute if you feel the muscle is particularly tight. ‘No pain, no gain’ definitely does not apply to stretching. You should feel a mild pull, rather than any pain. In fact, stretching should be a relaxing experience rather than a strain and as we all know, we perform much better when we’re relaxed! Bouncing at the end of a stretch can also cause injury; the sudden movement, rather than relaxing and lengthening your muscle, makes it contract and shorten, causing microtrauma within the muscle.

When you do stretches, each of the main muscle groups that you’ll be using needs some attention. If you can’t feel a stretch in the muscle, you’re probably doing the stretch wrong! The biggest mistake we see in patients is that they move their back instead of stretching the tight muscles in their legs. So here are our top tips for basic leg muscle stretching exercises. For each, you should hold the stretch for at least 10 seconds and if the pull has worn off, try to stretch a little further holding for another 10 seconds. Repeat on the other leg and do 3 times on each leg. Hamstrings (the muscle at the back of your thigh). The safest stretch for these muscles is done lying on your back. Bend one knee up towards your chest and hold behind the knee with both hands, with your arms as straight as possible. Now gradually straighten the knee until you feel a stretch in the muscle.

Quadriceps (the muscle on the front of your thigh). Try this in the proposal position i.e. on one knee! Then, keeping your spine straight, tuck your bottom under until you feel the stretch above the knee that is on the floor. If you can’t feel the stretch, raise your back foot slightly with a cushion.

Calf. This is actually made up of two muscles, the gastrocnemius and soleus, so you need to do two stretches! For gastroc stand in the stride position, keep the heel of your back foot on the ground and your knee straight. Then lunge gently forwards bending your front knee over your big toe until you feel a pull in the back lower leg. To stretch the soleus repeat as above, but after lunging try gently to bend your back knee still without lifting your heel! Remember, if you haven’t done exercise for a while do check first with your GP, practice nurse or see a Chartered Physiotherapist who can advise you on suitable levels of exercise for you and teach you more stretches too!
