Welcome To
The Spring ‘20 edition of The Scallymag for Todmorden and Hebden Bridge
W
hat a shocking few weeks we have had in the Calder Valley. 1,200 homes and businesses flooded across the Calder Valley, again, this time by Storm Ciara.
So the rain is still lashing against my window, but the flood alert has been lifted and I’m daring to look to the coming Spring and the warmer weather. Have a look at our Out and About piece this time (page 13), for wildlife spotting on your doorstep. And have you been to see Dippy yet? If not he (or it could be she) is in Rochdale until the end of June. This is his only stop in the North West. More details on page 4. Once again, I must thank all contributors, advertisers and you, the readers for your support and loyalty. I really couldn’t do this without you.
But what an amazing response from the community. The six hubs, that opened almost immediately across Calderdale, including one in Todmorden and one in Hebden Bridge, have worked tirelessly co-ordinating the relief effort, providing support, cleaning materials and other supplies, and feeding the flood victims and the clean up volunteers. The kindness of the people in my community is amazing.

A
jam packed programme of roarsome dinosaur inspired activities has been unveiled as Rochdale and the North West gears up to welcome Dippy the dinosaur to the area in February.
The Natural History Museum’s famous dinosaur cast, Dippy, left the museum for the first time in 2017 to embark on a national tour and Rochdale has been selected as one of his stops. Rochdale, which is the only North West stop on the tour, will play host to the famous dinosaur from 10 February 2020 to 28 June 2020 at Number One Riverside with an accompanying Dippy exhibition at Touchstones Rochdale. It’s free to see Dippy and visit the Dippy exhibition.

As Huge Dippy Events Programme Is Unveiled
Dippy on Tour: A Natural History Adventure, is being brought to Number One Riverside and visitors across the UK by the Natural History Museum in partnership with the Garfield Weston Foundation, and supported by Dell EMC and Williams & Hill. And the council and Link4Life who are organising Dippy’s stay in Rochdale, are determined to make it an experience to remember, with the accompanying events programme featuring everything from a giant Diplodocus lego build to a dino inspired Halle orchestra performance. More than 20 events and activities will be on offer throughout Dippy’s stay. Highlights include a dino lego build, which will see LEGO artist Warren Elsmore come to Number One Riverside to build a giant Diplodocus out of lego bricks, with the help of children and families. The Halle Dinosaurumpus family concert will see the world famous orchestra perform at Middleton Arena with dinosaur explorer Tomas O’Redmond in a special show. Over at Touchstones Rochdale, visitors can explore an
exciting and ambitious Dippy Exhibition which will be filled with interactives and hands on displays. There will be an opportunity to learn more about the Diplodocus and other dinosaurs and get up close to some fossilised bones including teeth, eggs and even dinosaur poo in the Dinosaur gallery. In the swampland gallery, people will travel back in time to see what Rochdale would have been like 300 million years ago, before heading to the ‘Our Changing Planet’ gallery to look at how we can all work together to make a difference to protect the future of our planet. And children can get even more hands on with an opportunity to meet mini beasts like spiders and scorpions at a special session at Touchstones Rochdale, one of many activities which will take place there during his stay. Those who prefer getting active can get involved energetic pursuits like the Dino Dash at Rochdale Leisure Centre and building boats on Hollingworth Lake. Dippy on Tour has proved a record breaker, with over 1.5m people visiting the much-loved dinosaur at his tour stops so far; Dorset, Birmingham, Belfast, Glasgow, Newcastle and Cardiff. Rochdale will be the penultimate stop, before the tour finishes at Norwich Cathedral in October 2020. All events and activities, and booking information, can also be found at: www.visitrochdale.com

F
Tour De Yorkshire To Visit The Upper Calder Valley
or the first time since it’s inauguration in 2015, the Tour De Yorkshire cycle race will be coming along a roadway near you this year. Specifically the races on Saturday 2nd May. Last year over 2 million fans lined the race routes so expect it to be busy and expect delays, but you can also expect a party atmosphere and some thrilling action!
Stage 3 of the men’s race will set off from Barnsley then travel, via Holmfirth, Slaithwaite, Ripponden and Sowerby Bridge, along the A646, through Luddenden Foot, Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge and Eastwood. Just before it reaches Todmorden town centre the race will turn right up Cross Stone Road then Hey Head Lane to Eastwood Lane and on to The Long Causeway where it will turn right to Blackshaw Head. It will then head around Heptonstall and back into Hebden Bridge where it will turn north again, through Pecket well and away over to Oxenhope, Denholme, Queensbury, Northowram, Halifax, Southowram,
Brighouse and will finish in Huddersfield. The total route is 134 Km long The section out of Todmorden (they call the Côte De Todmorden) is the second steepest section of the day but much longer than the steepest. The climb out of Hebden Bridge (the Côte De Hebden Bridge) is also a categorised climb that the King or Queen of the Mountains will be competing for. Stage 2 of the Women’s race takes place on the same day, following a very similar route, but will miss out the loop from Hebden Bridge around Todmorden and back to Hebden Bridge and will, instead, turn north to Pecket Well and Oxenhope directly from Hebden Bridge. If you are going to watch the race, look out for the three leader’s jerseys. In the Tour De Yorkshire these are: Overall race leader in blue, King or Queen of the Mountains in Red and Sprint leader in Green. Stage 4 of the men’s race, on Sunday 3rd May, begins in Halifax, at the Piece Hall. It then heads north, out of Calderdale, but the pace of the race at the start of each stage is quite relaxed, with riders chatting and sharing stories about the previous day and even about the stage ahead. This provides spectators with a chance to get a glimpse of the riders before they get up to speed and become a blur as they whizz past. For more information and more exact timing for the day, available nearer the time, please visit www.letour.yorkshire.com
Calderdale’s Zero Carbon Target
C
alderdale Council is proposing another bold move in its fight against climate change – to make the borough carbon neutral by 2038.
The Council declared a climate emergency on 30 January 2019. This confirmed its commitment to protecting the environment and highlighted the need for urgent action to limit global warming. Cllr Scott Patient, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Environment, said: “A year on from declaring a climate emergency in Calderdale, we’re already
making good progress in our fight against climate change. It’s great to see local people and organisations really getting behind it. “There’s still a long way to go, but we can all make a difference. Now we need to go a step further. That’s why we’re proposing a bold target of becoming carbon neutral by 2038, with significant progress being made by 2030. I urge everyone to think about how they can make changes to their lives to help protect our distinctive environment.” Key achievements to tackle climate change so far include: • Halving the Council’s carbon emissions between 2005/06 and 2017/18. • Planting thousands of trees in Calderdale to help absorb carbon dioxide and

improve air quality. Boosting walking and cycling across the borough through transport schemes, Next Chapter and Active Calderdale. Continuing to work closely with partner organisations and voluntary groups on natural flood management to help protect Calderdale from future flooding. Continuing to install LED street lighting across Calderdale to reduce energy use by 60% and cut emissions by over 3000 tonnes a year. Starting the rollout of rapid charging points for electric vehicles. Setting up a Cabinet Climate Change Working Party to coordinate and drive actions to address the climate emergency.

Notes For The Diary Pages
O
nce again our community has been hit hard by the weather. It is so sad to see all the homes, businesses and people’s lives devastated for a second, third and, in some cases, up to ninth time in the last twenty years.
After the Boxing Day floods of 2015, there were so many amends to our diary pages that we colour coded sections to show what activities had stopped while repairs were done, what had moved to new premises, etc. However, this time, many of the businesses, church halls and community spaces where the events take place have bounced back much quicker and the vast majority of the classes and meetings can carry on as usual. There are a few exceptions, particularly in Mytholmroyd, so we still recommend that you check before setting out but it is looking like most of the venues, if not already, will be back in action very soon.
E
aster Sunday will fall on April 12th this year. Are you ready? Are your children excited?
Easter - Fun Facts and Figures
The name Easter owes its origin to Eostre or Eastre, an Anglo-Saxon goddess of light and the dawn who was honoured at pagan festivals celebrating the arrival of spring. Despite Easter now being a Christian festival, many of the traditions and symbols can be traced back to those pagan times. Eggs, for example, are simply associated with Spring and the coming of new life. Rabbits were also a symbol of fertility. Here are some amazing facts about Easter you may enjoy. • Every child in the UK receives an average of 8.8 chocolate Easter eggs every year, which is roughly double their recommended calorie intake for a whole week. • In a recent survey it was found that, when people enjoy a chocolate Easter bunny 76% bite off the ears first, 5% go for the feet and 4% opt for the tail. • The average household spends £75 on Easter treats each year. • Easter sales make up 10 per cent of the UK’s chocolate spending for the whole year. • The UK’s first chocolate egg was produced in 1873 by Fry’s of Bristol. • The world’s most popular egg-shaped chocolate is Cadbury’s Creme Egg. 1.5 million of these are produced every day. • In many parts of Britain, egg rolling is an Easter Sunday tradition. This is also popular in America where there is a competition on the White House lawn each year. • 43% of kids say they eat their first chocolate egg before Easter Sunday, but the average time for children to eat their first Easter egg is 11am on Easter Sunday morning. • Almost one in five children (19%) say they’ve made themselves ill by eating too much chocolate over the Easter holidays.
Diary Pages The heart of The Scallymag are the following five, indispensible diary pages. Pre-school and Playgroups usually offer free sessions for children aged 2 and over for 15/30 hours per week during term time. Contact them directly for more information. Out of School Clubs are for older children who require care outside normal school hours or during holidays. Those listed take all children, not just those who attend any associated school. The bottom section shows opening times for places you might like to visit regularly with your child.
The centre spread is the Pre-school Diary. White background is for drop-in sessions, shaded background is for bookable activities. All sessions will require an adult to remain with the child at all times. Most activities charge a small fee; all Children’s Centre services are free, with any donations gratefully received. Please phone ahead before setting out as details can change at any time.
The second spread shows the many different activities available for school age children, from Chess to Dancing, Karate to Brass bands! Again, please use the contact details provided to check details before setting out. If you have any new or up-dated information that should be included here, please let us know – contact details are on page 3.

n event like the awful recent flooding can be a difficult and upsetting experience for children and young people. Some may have had their homes or schools flooded, and even those whose homes have escaped damage may pick up on the anxiety and disruption going on around them. With that in mind I’ve picked out a selection of books that may help young people deal with stress and anxiety. For younger children
Ruby’s Worry by Tom Percival - £6.99
Ruby loves being Ruby. Until, one day, she finds a Worry. No matter what she does, the Worry comes with her, even though she tries to pretend it’s not there. How can Ruby feel like herself again? this is the perfect picture book for discussing childhood worries and anxieties, no matter how big or small they may be.
For Any age
Mindful Kids by Whitney Stewart - £10.99
This boxed card deck includes 50 creative mindfulness games, visualizations and exercises. A wonderful child focused resource to help children of all ages (and adults!) feel grounded, find calm, improve focus, and relax. Whimsical full-colour illustrations on both sides of the cards break down each practice into easy-to-follow steps.
Be Calm - £9.99
A little guide for teens, with short articles covering everything from anxiety, to homework and social media, with tips on how to be emotionally resilient and be your best self. Along with many other homes and businesses in the Calder Valley The Book Case didn’t manage to completely escape the flooding brought by Storm Ciara. However we are happy to report that our flood resilience methods worked well and we managed to be open again in just a couple of days. Our customers and the local community have been amazing, we want to thank everyone for their support.

Best Sellers at The Book Case
Beast of Buckingham Palace by David Walliams - £14.99 Pvp Tidy by Emily Gravett - £6.99 Pvp Little Book of Jokes for Kids of All Ages by Martin Ellis - £2.99 Pvp The Yorkshire Sticker Book £6.00 Pvp Dragon Post by Emma Yarlett - £10.00 Pvp Shiny Pippin and the Impossible Door by Harry Heape - £6.99 Pvp
We have a really interesting selection of titles in our best sellers this month. It’s no surprise to see the giant of children’s writing David Walliams in the top spot with his latest book, but it is great to see a Harry Heape book there as well. Harry is a writer from the local area who is building a big following with local children. We also have some great picture books in the list. Tidy by Emily Gravett is one of our favourites and we are also loving Dragon Post. As well as covering themes of friendship and asking for help, children will love opening the little letters in the book. Finally it’s not surprising, with the awful weather we’ve got, some activity books on our list. What could be better when it’s raining than to stay inside with a sticker or a joke book!
Out & About One of my favourite places to discover interesting wildlife is along the riverbanks in and around Hebden Bridge. Elegant, graceful herons glide over the town or fish the waters, whilst the fabulous white-bibbed dippers plunge into fast flowing streams in search of food. Dippers sometimes swallow small stones so they can stay underwater longer and a great game is trying to guess where they’ll emerge after a dive. If you’re lucky you might even spot a kingfisher darting over the water in a flash of gold and blue. On the edge of the woods, woodpeckers, jays and fidgety tree-creepers can be found, alongside the more common wrens, blackbirds, magpies and robins. Make sure you take time to listen to the birds singing; they might in truth be fighting over territory and proving how strong and tough they are to their rivals but, still, it sounds overwhelmingly beautiful. My own personal favourite animals are deer and I frequently glimpse them in the mornings when out walking the dog. At other times they can be as elusive as baby unicorns. For a great family day out there are some wonderful places where you can get up close to deer. Try nearby National Trust properties such as Lyme Park, Dunham Massey and Tatton Park, all just an hour or so drive away. But nothing quite beats the elation of spotting deer in the wild so, when you’re walking through the woods, keep your eyes peeled. If you are lucky enough to see deer, stay as still and quiet as you can, as they will often find you just as fascinating, and may pause to check you out! Up on the moors, in areas such as the Bridestones above Todmorden, you can spot lapwings (sadly now a rare sight in many parts of the UK), kestrels hovering above the fields in search of prey or curlews with their long swooping bills and evocative mournful call. Each localised habitat has it’s particular wildlife and there’s always more to discover and learn throughout the year. Back down in the valleys, our rivers, once heavily polluted by industry, now boast a healthy stock of brown trout and otters have also been recently spotted on the upper reaches of the River Calder. The almost reptilian looking cormorant, more usually associated with the coast and estuaries, can also be found inland in Calderdale. Early evening is a good time to hear owls hooting or the shrill barking of foxes. And don’t forget to seek out the lowly caterpillars and butterflies, beetles and earwigs, spiders and all manner of creepy crawlies. Nature is an endless supply of wonder. A pair of binoculars comes in handy when out and about and it’s possible to take fantastic nature photos on your camera phone. Of course, respect the natural environment and try not to make too much noise, and you’ll certainly be rewarded. Happy wildlife spotting!
Discovering Calderdale’s Wildlife
W
By Richard Dalby
e are truly lucky to live in a beautiful area filled with hills, rivers, waterfalls, canals and woodlands and most of us are within a short walking distance of these landscapes. What we might not realise so readily is that our countryside is also home to a surprising array of wildlife. Take a path off the main roads and up into the woods, or walk beside a river, and you enter a whole new kingdom. A simple stroll can be transformed into something magical when we encounter wildlife and it always feels a great privilege to witness. I hope this feature can illustrate just some of the wildlife we can find quite easily on our doorstep. Children absolutely adore animals; from feeding the ducks, to hugging a beloved pet or chasing the pigeons around the park (oh those poor, long-suffering pigeons!). Yet, as nature expert and broadcaster Chris Packham said; “The rarest sight in the countryside isn’t a lapwing or a skylark – it’s a child.”

Health Matters
I
s there anything I can do to help my child through the exam season through dietary and lifestyle changes?
This is a question I regularly hear from parents, because they notice the lead up to the exam period often has a detrimental effect on their child’s wellbeing; not only on their mental health (for example they may worry more, sleep may be disrupted or they may be irritable with family or friends), but on their physical health too (they may be more prone to catching coughs and colds, have low energy, suffer headaches, have disrupted menstruation or develop gut issues such as stomach ache or diarrhoea). In clinic, I particularly see the impacts of stress in young people of GCSE and A-level age, when there is an increased demand for academic success, but this also applies to children worried about SATs or 11 plus exams. Stress is a state that is crucial to survival. By releasing cortisol and adrenaline (the stress hormones) the body is driven into a state of ‘fight or flight’, which means that the heart pumps faster and lungs take in more oxygen so we are ready to take action against a threat more quickly. When this occurs, our respiratory and cardiovascular systems are prioritised over our digestive, reproductive and immune systems. In the past, when we had regular physical threats, this process would have saved our lives and, as soon as the threat had passed, we would have returned back to our normal lives. Unfortunately, in the present day, our brains are unable to differentiate between a serious threat and some of the ‘microstresses’ we experience daily (such as responding to constant text messages, negative comments on social media, a delayed bus journey, homework pressures, etc) which may seem insignificant in themselves but accrue to many releases of cortisol and adrenaline through the day. This means that the body never truly relaxes into the ‘rest and digest’ mode that is necessary for good physical and mental health (including good digestive function and immune health).
So, what can we do to alleviate stress on our young people? There are four main focuses when dealing with reduction of stress: 1. Focus on a whole food diet. Under stress, the body depletes nutrients at a much quicker rate. Refined foods may provide instant energy but they have been stripped of the nutrients that our body needs to work efficiently. When we consume insufficient nutrients we might begin to experience symptoms such as anxiety and sleep disturbance which is, in fact, another stress on the body, leading to further nutrition depletion. To provide the body with the nutrients it needs, focus on a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, wholegrains, beans and lentils. These provide essential magnesium and B vitamins, vitamin C, zinc and fibre that help with nervous system, digestive, and immune health. During times of increased stress it may also be beneficial to eat small, regular meals, rather than three large meals, to spread energy throughout the day. 2. Get enough sleep. The importance of good sleep can’t be emphasised strongly enough. Unfortunately, modern technology can have a detrimental effect on good sleep patterns. Firstly, give yourself at least a 8-9 hour sleep window and stay away from all caffeinated drinks (including fizzy colas and energy drinks). To improve sleep quality, come off all screens (phones, TVs, computer games, computers etc) at least 90 minutes before bedtime. The blue light affects the production of the sleep hormone melatonin which may lead to difficulty getting off to sleep, waking in the night, or waking extra early. Poor sleep also leads to increased stress. Blue light blocking glasses may help if a screen does need to be used for homework, though an active mind before bed may also disrupt sleep. 3. Move more. In studies, physical activity has been linked with stress reduction. Scientists found that regular aerobic exercise decreases tension, increases and stabilises mood, improves sleep and self-esteem. As little as five minutes can begin to reduce anxiety. Physical activity also produce endorphins, the natural painkillers that improve sleep, which in turn reduces stress. 4. Relax. Taking time to relax as well as study is important to stress reduction. First of all plan revision and study time into small bitesize chunks so you’re not overwhelmed. Also, these days, we’re compelled to be busy all the time, especially with smartphones, TVs and computer games constantly at hand. Take some time to have an epsom salt bath before bed (which contains magnesium to aid with relaxation), read a book (a mindful activity) or even take deep breaths or do some mindful meditation (both exercises release endorphins) to put the nervous system into a state of “rest and digest”. For enjoyable mindful meditation exercises before bed, I recommend the Rays of Calm CD by Christiane Kerr. The best thing is by reducing stress we improve memory and learning. So, ensure your young person knows that they should take some time out for self-care if they want to learn more.
