Cannon Hall Farm By Carrie Goodwin
I
f you’re looking for a fun family day out that offers value for money, Cannon Hall Farm has it all.
After hearing lots of positive things about it, we decided to give it a go. We arrived at around 10.30am on a chilly morning to explore the Best Tourist Experience Yorkshire has to offer, according to the judges at Yorkshire’s White Rose Awards, and now according to us too. Finding the farm was easy; parking was easy, it seems everything has been thought of. Admission is £4.95 per person (less for senior citizens and under 4s are free). It’s great value for money as this gives you access to the farm and the adventure playgrounds for as long as you choose to stay. The farm is well stocked with sheep, goats,
cows, llamas, guinea pigs, rabbits and our favourite, the pigs. My little one wanted to see Peppa Pig and he wasn’t disappointed. There were plenty, and at a range of ages, some just days old. We also had a quick cuddle with a rabbit and a guinea pig in the animal petting area, which apparently isn’t a place where animals go to kiss! After that we went to explore the adventure playground. After recently spending £400,000 on new equipment, which includes a climbing forest, tube maze, zip wire and pyramid towers, the staff at Cannon Hall Farm know how to entertain the whole family. The play area was lots of fun, so much so, I found myself climbing through the tube maze with lots of five and six year olds. Then, when the cold weather got the better of us we decided to head over to the tea rooms to warm up and refuel. The choice is pretty good. There’s a children’s menu with all the usuals you would expect to see at a farm café but there are also gluten free options, decaf drinks and all the extras that nudge it up towards a luxury offering. And, if you spend £10 in the tea room you can claim back the £3 you paid to park.
On a practical point, there are toilets and hand sanitizers everywhere. The staff are helpful and it’s easy to get around with a buggy. There’s also plenty planned for the Summer holidays including sheepdog demonstrations where dogs show off their skills herding ducks and geese, bird of prey demonstrations and sheep racing. There are also lots of Kids activities and workshops planned. Check out the website for up-to-date info.
Essential Info Cannon Hall Farm is five miles west of Barnsley, 10 minutes from junction 37 of the M1, about an hour’s drive from the centre of here. Bark House Lane, Cawthorne, Barnsley, S75 4AT 01226 790427 info@cannonhallfarm.co.uk www.cannonhallfarm.co.uk

eureka! festival
his summer Eureka! The National Children’s Museum in Halifax is staging a six week outdoor festival to enable families and children to enjoy quality time playing together.
Eureka!’s lawns and outside areas will be occupied by four marquees, where families can engage in a range of special events and activities, as well as the usual fun inside the museum. Describing Playfest 2012, Eureka! Marketing & Development Director Tom Warman, said: “We know from events like National Play Day that families enjoy sitting about watching their children play in a relaxed and easy-going environment. The idea for Playfest 2012 is that, by having a different theme for each day of the week over a six week period, families can experience something different every time they visit. Playfest 2012 is about having fun, surprising yourself with some playful activities and simply enjoying the festival atmosphere.
It’ll be a great day out for both children and parents and we hope it’ll be something that families come back to enjoy more than once during its six weeks duration.” Visitors will have a different experience on every visit, enjoying the daily themes of Move It Monday, Tell a Tale Tuesday, World Wednesday, Theatre Thursday, Funtime Friday, Saturday Sounds and Science Sunday. These themes will be played out in four different marquees which will have a Main Stage, Laughter Tent, a Fingers & Thumbs Tent and a Bits & Bobs Tent. The activities will also happen in the main Eureka! building where families can enjoy the festival while learning through play in the permanent exhibitions. Eureka! Playfest 2012 will run every day from 11am on Saturday 21 July until 4pm on Sunday 2 September. An online programme of events will be available on Eureka!’s website www.eureka.org. uk/playfest2012 from mid June. The festival is free with standard admission or your Eureka! annual pass.

odnaze Community Association, Hebden Bridge, has been awarded a grant by the Community Foundation for Calderdale to hold a Queens Diamond Jubilee party at the community centre that they work tirelessly to keep open.
The Group has been awarded the money to hold a celebration that all members of the community can attend to celebrate together. Dodnaze Community Association administrator comments, “The centre is at the heart of the housing estate and often holds sessional events that benefit the local community such as after school club, art groups, a toddler group and over

50’s drop in. The grant will enable the group to hold a party in honour of the Queens Diamond Jubilee and bring together old and young alike, as a community, and celebrate this momentous occasion. The Group believe that they can improve moral within their community by offering an event to enjoy, without the worry of being excluded or unable to afford to participate. This is especially important during these hard economic times The Community Foundation for Calderdale received great interest from local residence and community groups applying for grants to stage Jubilee events, when they launched their Jubilee fund. Steve Duncan CEO of the Community Foundation for Calderdale says, “Community Foundation for
Calderdale has been very pleased with response to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Fund. The Diamond Jubilee is a magnificent anniversary and a once in a lifetime event – only one other British monarch has ever celebrated a Diamond Jubilee and this time around Calderdale really seems to want to celebrate.” For more information about grants available locally please visit www. cffc.co.uk you can as follow news and events from CFFC on twitter @CalderdaleFound

Arty Birthday Parties and Creative Play
nspiring imaginations is at the heart of The Creation Station’s children’s creative classes and arty birthday parties.
The innovative and award winning programme gives pre-school children hands on art and craft exploration sessions, allowing them to safely experiment with a wide range of materials, tools and ideas. Parties and weekly term-time classes are run at a variety of local venues by Neela Jackson. Neela was a college lecturer in art and design until the birth of her daughter when she decided she wanted a career change. There are various party packages available to suit all budgets and they can be tailored to suit a theme. Neela provides invitations, party bags and two art/craft activities in the first hour of

We also have optional, fun games where time/space allows. The children return home proudly with a party bag with their unique and treasured keepsakes of a really special celebration.” Neela also holds The Creation Station sessions at Jitterbugs, Littleborough (Wed, 9.45am) and at Upsy Daisy’s, Mytholmroyd (Thu, 9.45am). ou never know, there might be some warm, sunny days between now and next winter. In anticipation of this, Top Trumps is taking a seasonal diversion from actual playgrounds to concentrate on places to cool off and splash around.
So in a spirit of optimism, here are three prime paddling spots. Choose from the easily accessible Salem Fields ‘beach’, secluded and sheltered Jack Bridge or panoramic Gaddings Dam. Bring some anti-midge/mosquito repellant, the beasties are liable to spoil the idyll. Excepting ‘Equipment’, the categories are broadly relevant. The ‘Comfort and Joy’ factor with the latter two are pubs. Both are child-friendly but if you do plan to eat at them, check, as they don’t always open for lunch. Happy splashing!

Picturesque but shady. The shingle beach in the bend of the river is an easy stroll from the centre of Hebden Bridge. Little ones can splash in the shallows and chuck gravel to their heart’s content. Bigger ones can explore the rocks and hone their stone skimming skills. Watch out for dog poo and glass fragments which haven’t been in the water long enough to be ground to dullness.

The Colden bus will take you here. Alight at the New Delight pub and take the footpath opposite. A sign directs you down a short steep hill to the main pool in this sheltered little suntrap of a valley. The pool bottom is gentle on foot and behind so barefoot paddling or relaxed lounging is possible. There’s plenty of grassy space adjoining it to set out a picnic.
Fancy wiggling your toes in golden sand, listening to the lapping of waves...and looking across to Stoodley Pike? Incongruous? Yes. Welcome to the highest beach in England. The Mankinholes Circular bus passes hourly, alight at The Shepherd’s Rest pub. There are two main options, the long and leisurely climb via the Basin Stone, or the steep, direct route. Both may involve some gentle encouragement and heavy bribery.

CRAFTY PONIES PARTIES! If you live locally, in Hebden Bridge or surrounding areas, Karen will travel to you and treat your child to a Crafty Ponies party! Karen says “Crafty Ponies parties are great fun for young children, I bring along a Crafty Pony for every child to play with and the children learn lots about ponies, feeding, grooming, tacking up and even putting a rug on. We finish with a showjumping competition and every party child recieves a rosette and Crafty Ponies quiz and puzzle booklet to keep, the Birthday child gets a Crafty Ponies kit too!”
CRAFTY PONIES has been HIGHLY COMMENDED in the CREATIVE PLAY AWARDS 2011 Our testers said: “This is a wonderfully thought out kit and the end result is excellent. You do need to be confident about sewing, although the instructions were very clear and should enable anyone to achieve a good end result”. “This kit offers a high enjoyment factor and the children had lots of role-play fun. The game and educational website really add to the play value” - test reviewers for the Creative Play Awards 2011

national award for local new toy
C
rafty Ponies, the brainchild of local mum Karen Clithero has just scooped a major award in the ‘Creative Play Awards 2011’.
Mother of six, Karen, says, “We are all absolutely delighted, Crafty Ponies is a great product and we have had good response from our customers. Their testimonials speak for the quality of the product and the appeal that it has both to children and adults alike. To be highly commended in this national competition against the big toy and craft manufacturers is a real ‘feather in the cap’ for our fledgling family business.” Karen first made Crafty Ponies for her children when they were small so they could learn about ponies and how all the tack and equipment works. The saddle, bridle, numnah and grooming kit are realistic versions of the real thing so the skills were easily transferred to the real thing as they got older.
“We have sourced natural products, locally,” Karen told us, “The only plastic in the kit are two tiny components for the saddle. Most soft toys are manufactured in the Far East and made from synthetic materials. Crafty Ponies are handmade by you from cotton fabric and cotton yarn. Even the card packaging is recycled into the stable and a show jumping game.” The Crafty Ponies kit is also supported by an educational website which contains lots of pony lessons, quizzes, fun and games for hours of Crafty Pony fun and learning. “We believe that making their own pony, with the help of an adult, teaches children to value their toys, gives them a sense of achievement and develops self-confidence.” Karen said. There are fully illustrated instructions in the kit and the website contains lots of films to keep the making of Crafty Ponies simple, clear and fun. Crafty Ponies is only sold through the website so the customer is buying directly from the manufacturer. The carbon footprint of Crafty Ponies is kept low and the product is excellent value for money. Crafty Ponies make an excellent birthday gift of lasting value, so for any pony mad child (or adult!) look no further. Crafty Ponies are committed to helping children to learn about ponies and bringing families together through creativity and play, whilst having fun and caring for the environment.
I am in love with my crafty pony, ‘Rupert’!!! He is amazing!! I can now teach my friends and family members how to care for and tack up any pony!! So now they can tack up my horse for me, HaHa!! Anyone tempted by buying one of these adorable ponies I will say... GO AHEAD!! They are amazing in every way, you’re not just having fun you’re bonding with the grown ups!! So go ahead and buy one of these wonderful kits!! Ellie
My daughter loves her Crafty Pony. She had him for Christmas last year when she was nearly 10 and is still playing with him today. She was able to do most of it herself. I did the more difficult machining and the ironing, and some of the over sewing. The instructions are very clear and easy to find on the site. It was great fun and very good value for money. I like the fact that it was all produced locally, out of good quality materials and has such lasting appeal. Bridget Peake

Another eventful year has passed and the Upper Valley Family Services team (Todmorden Children’s Centre including nursery, Hebden Vale Children’s Centre, the Family Support and Outreach Team and the Community Early Years Practitioners team) have a lot to celebrate and a busy year to look forward to. Last year the team successfully delivered a range of pre-school and holiday activities across the Upper Valley and we aim to continue this year with an equally exciting offer for families, please see the diary section of this magazine or our websites (address below) for our current timetable. The summer edition of our magazine will be published in early July and posted to many family homes. If you do not receive your copy, please give us a call, pick one up from your Children’s Centre, or view online on our websites. Our family support and outreach work has grown tremendously this year and we have delivered two Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities courses to support parents with behaviour management, in addition to offering 1-1 support for families in their homes and in groups on a range of issues. Our workers offer support around; confidence building, parenting skills, family dynamics and relationships, breastfeeding, healthy lifestyles and activities, budgeting and debt advice, family learning, child development and school readiness and referral or support to access other agencies. We will be working even harder this year to provide services to families in the Upper Valley area, particularly those who feel vulnerable or are most in need of our support.

In November 2011 Todmorden Children’s Centre was inspected by Ofsted, we were very pleased that our nursery was awarded an overall judgement of Good and the whole Children’s Centre was awarded a Satisfactory with Good judgements in Staying Safe and Safeguarding. The management team have already developed an action plan to address the recommendations from the Ofsted inspection and will continue to work towards achieving these with the ambition that we will achieve a Good or Outstanding outcome at our next inspection. If you would like to see the inspection report or action plan please contact us at the address or telephone number below. This year the Government has introduced a new core purpose for children’s centres.(see below) In addition, a number of payment by results schemes are being trialled as part of the Government’s ambitions to improve public services and deliver improved value for the taxpayer. Calderdale is part of this trial and in the Upper Valley we will be undertaking consultation with parents and key partners including schools to look at how we can make a difference to families in our area and measure this to show impact. We will do this by talking to families in our activity sessions, and by hosting outreach activities in our communities. For details of our consultation programme, or to give us your feedback, please contact your Children’s Centre, details below.

he heart of The Scallymag are the following indispensible diary pages. On this first page we have the Pre-school and Playgroups that run in our area. These usually offer free sessions for children aged 3 and over for 15 hours per week during term time. Contact them directly for more information. The Out of School listings are for older children who require care outside normal school hours or during holidays. Those listed take all children, not just those who attend any associated school.
The bottom section shows opening times for places you might like to visit regularly with your child. The centre spread is the Pre-school Diary. White background is for drop-in sessions, shaded background is for bookable activities. All sessions will require an adult to remain with the child at all times. Most activities charge a small fee; all Children’s Centre services are free, with any donations gratefully received. Please phone ahead before setting out as details can change at any time.
Finally the second spread shows the many different activities available for school age children, from Chess to Dancing, Karate to Brass bands! T
here are over 65,000 children and young people living in care across the UK, most of them living with foster carers.
But, despite this, research carried out by leading charity ‘The Fostering Network’ suggests there is a national shortage of approximately 8,750 foster carers. This situation is reflected here in Calderdale. The number of children and young people who need foster care in our area has been increasing over the last few years. Today, there are 365 children in care in Calderdale and more foster carers are needed. Not having enough foster carers often means that children cannot be placed in the area they know. If the right foster family is not available make a living, make a difference straight away this can sometimes mean that children have to be placed with fostering agencies outside of the borough or placed temporarily with alternative carers and then moved again within a short space of time. make a living, make a difference Children who need foster care come from different backgrounds and

from all areas across Calderdale. Sadly, many of these children will have suffered abuse or neglect. Foster carers are needed from all walks of life. Calderdale’s current foster carers come from all cultures, religious faiths, and age groups, living in all kinds of homes. Calderdale needs people to become foster carers who can make a positive difference to children’s lives. Foster carers currently receive payments that range between £10,280 and £28,836 per year based on individual circumstances and the needs of the child they care for. Fran, a Calderdale foster carer, summed up what drove her to foster children: “Knowing that we are making a difference to a child and that it will help them in later life, that they are safe and well cared for whilst they are with us,” she said. As a Calderdale foster carer, there’s a package of support that you’ll receive including contacts with existing foster carers. Could you make a difference to a child’s life? If you would like to know more about becoming a foster carer please call 0845 245 6000 or visit www.calderdale.gov.uk/fostering to receive an information pack and registration of interest form.

For Conception – Pregnancy - Birth and Beyond Conception
Many women trying for a baby suffer from fertility issues. Reflexology works holistically, relieving the stress and anxiety of not conceiving while re-balancing energy and hormones, aiding an improved, healthy, fertility.
Pregnancy
Elaine Shillitoe
A
s a mother-to-be you deserve to feel nurtured & supported during a time of constant change.
Reflexology is the perfect therapy during pregnancy. It is valuable tool that helps to relieve any stress and anxiety, while giving a feeling of deep relaxation and improved mood, sleep and general well being. It can also help ease pregnancy discomforts such as fatigue, nausea, swollen ankles, constipation etc. The special techniques for pregnancy strengthen the developing nurture bond between mother & unborn baby.
Labour & Childbirth
Regular reflexology performed in the last few weeks of pregnancy may facilitate improved progress and outcomes in labour. Good feedback has been received about the use of a technique to help induce labour if baby is overdue. This is mainly due to the relaxation response allowing the mother to feel less anxious about the labour. This allows the Oxytocin to flow and, when the time is right, labour begins naturally. The relaxation created takes away the stress that was stopping labour progressing.
Beyond
Postnatally & beyond, reflexology may be a tremendous, deeply restorative, support after baby arrives; balancing hormones, promoting deep relaxation, indirectly aiding the production of milk in breast feeding and giving an increased ability to cope with the responsibility of motherhood. A relaxed mother also leads to a relaxed infant.
“I am also a Yoga teacher & Aromatherapist & when I decided to specialise in Pregnancy & babies I trained in reflexology with The Light of Hope CIC .College of Light. in Manchester. The gentle technique works on the whole body through the feet bringing balance & harmony to all systems physical , mental, emotional, & hormonal. A perfect therapy to create a healthy pregnancy. Reflexology treatments can start once pregnancy is safely into the mid-trimester. Each session is tailor made to your individual needs.” Elaine E Shillitoe

How to treat nits
H
aving headlice doesn’t mean you’re dirty, or that you don’t wash properly. Most people get them at some point, so you’re not alone.
Headlice are tiny insects that live in human hair. They’re very small – about the size of a sesame seed – and are browny-grey in colour. They have six legs, each with a claw on the end. They use these to cling on to your hair and they survive by biting the scalp and feeding on your blood. This often causes itching, but not always.
The female headlice lay eggs in sacs which are glued to your individual hairs. A baby headlouse then hatches seven to 10 days later. You might be able to spot the remains of the tiny white egg in your hair. It’s called a ‘nit’. Some people also use the word ‘nit’ to mean ‘headlouse.’ Ten to 14 days later, the baby headlouse is ready to have babies of its own. Headlice crawl from head to head when you’re close to someone who’s got them. However, headlice can’t fly or jump, and it’s very rare to get headlice from a pillow or a towel as they can’t survive away from a human head for very long.
How to spot headlice
The wet combing method
Check your child’s hair. The most common places for headlice to lurk are in the hair behind your ears and at the nape of your neck. If you still can’t spot any lice, comb the child’s hair with a special ‘nit comb’. These are available from most chemists. It’s easier to spot the dark brown headlice as they fall out if you comb the hair over a piece of white paper. Now you need to treat your child. Headlice are tough – they can’t be killed by washing with normal shampoo or normal combing. Because they reproduce so quickly, you’ve got to kill them before they spread. If your child has headlice, check everyone in the family. You’ll need to treat everyone affected to get rid of them.

Chemical lotions or rinses
This is a method that avoids using chemicals. Only use these if you find a live headlouse. There are two main types, Wash your child’s hair using a normal shampoo. insecticide-based treatments or dimethicone treatments. World Book Day at the Book Case World Book Day is a celebration of books and reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world. This year saw more than 14 million book tokens distributed to children around the UK to encourage children to explore the pleasures of reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. We celebrated at the Book Case by having a Winnie the Witch themed day where local children listened to stories, and took part in themed activities, including a chance to make a hat like Winnie’s!

Choosing the right ones It is very important that you choose the right nappies for your needs. Even though they’re cheaper in the long run, they have a high upfront cost so you don’t want to choose a system that doesn’t work for you. There is much to consider though. For example, if you don’t have a tumble drier you would need quick drying nappies; if your baby has sensitive skin you may want to use organic cotton nappies; if you were leaving your baby with other carers you
24
would want to use nappies that could be applied and removed in one piece. Cloth nappy manufacturers are always improving their nappies or releasing new lines, so it’s very important that you get up to date advice. I’m a cloth nappy advisor for ‘Fill Your Pants’, an online retailer. I have up to date knowledge on a wide variety of nappies to suit everyone’s needs, and can offer you advice on which nappies are best for you.

nappies are on their way back
T
Dispelling the myths
he first disposable nappies were produced just after WWII when the only alternative was a square cotton towel and waterproof rubber pants.
What’s so different now?
There is no soaking, boiling or bleaching involved. You take the dirty nappy off the baby, and you put it in a dry bucket or a Smart Pail (a zippered bag that can be hung out of toddler’s reach) until you’re ready to do your nappy wash. On wash day, tip the nappies into the machine and wash with regular non-bio, then dry just as you would your clothes. Modern washing machines are much better at cleaning nappies than what was available in the early 20th Century. A wash at 60° is hot enough to kill bacteria, or you can wash at lower temperatures with a teaspoon of a gentle nappy sanitiser. If your baby is weaned you can use a liner in the nappy. They catch the solid poo but allow moisture through into the nappy. Disposable liners can be flushed or binned, reusable liners can be shaken into the toilet. So while the nappies don’t quite wash themselves, it’s not hard work. Cloth nappies are generally better at containing poo, especially pre-weaning poo explosions, so it means less outer clothes to soak and wash. And there are less trips to the shop to buy nappies!
Don’t they smell when they’re waiting to be washed?
No. Smart Pails zip shut or choose a bucket with a tight fitting lid.
Won’t they take ages to dry?
Most nappies fold out one way or another so there aren’t many layers to dry. Bamboo is the slowest fibre to dry, but some bamboo nappies separate into thin layers so dry quicker. There are also quick drying options available, such as microfibre and minky, which feel dry to the touch after been spun in the washing machine.
What about when you can’t change the baby immediately; won’t the nappy be wet against their skin?
No. Some nappies have a stay-dry layer above the absorbent part of the nappy. The moisture wicks through this layer leaving the skin dry without the need for chemicals. With nappies that don’t have this layer you would use a fleece liner.

I plan to go back to work so my son will be looked after by other people, I’ll have to use disposables then, won’t I?
No. All-in-one nappies or preprepared all-in-two nappies are just as easy to use as a disposable so there’s no reason for anyone to struggle with them. They would just remove the dirty nappy and place in a wetbag for you to sort out later.
The Benefits Firstly there are environmental benefits. • The average child goes through 6000 disposable nappies. That’s 2 tonnes. These would take 250-500 years to degrade, costing the taxpayer over £100 per baby in landfill taxes. • Disposable nappies also contribute to groundwater contamination. Solids are supposed to be removed from the nappies before disposing, yet less than 0.5% of parents do this. All that poo goes into the landfill and attracts diseases. • And we haven’t even mentioned how many trees are cut down to make all these nappies! Secondly, there is the cost. Even though the upfront cost is high, using reusable nappies can save you £500-
£1000 for one baby. A lot of them now fit babies from birth to potty training so you only need to buy one set. Also they can be used on more than one baby, so are a very economical option if you plan to have more than one child. If not, they can be sold second hand or passed on to a friend. Thirdly, and most importantly, are the benefits to your baby’s health: • Disposable nappies contain Polyacrylic Acid to absorb the moisture as it turns into a gel. This gel often seeps out of the nappy onto the baby’s skin. It’s a skin irritant and will absorb all the moisture from baby’s skin, causing nappy rash and, in some cases, bleeding of the perennial and scrotal tissues. Polyacrylic acid has also been linked
to Toxic Shock Syndrome and is now banned from being used in tampons. • Disposable nappies can heat the testes above body temperature. This is thought to be a significant factor in the declining fertility rates in men. • Some disposables are dyed using substances known to damage the central nervous system, kidneys, and liver. • Babies can’t feel when they have urinated in a disposable nappy, as it is turned into a gel. This can lead to delayed potty training. lympic fever is gripping the nations and, unless you’re lucky enough to have tickets to see any of the events, most of us will be joining in with the cheering from the comfort of our living rooms.
However there is one way you can get up close to the Olympic action and tone up your cheering voice, by going to see the torch as it passes by on its way to London. Unfortunately the torch will not be passing through the Upper Calder Valley, but you don’t need to travel far to see it. Here is all the info you need:
Starting early in the morning, on day 35 (Saturday 23rd June) in Blackpool, the torch will pass through Lytham St Annes, Preston and Blackburn before reaching Accrington at 10.19am. It will then go through: Burnley at 11.05 Crawshawbooth at 12.58 Rawtenstall at 13.18 Rochdale at 13.51 Heywood at 15.01 and on, through Bury to Manchester
On day 36 (Sunday 24th June) the torch will begin in Manchester and pass through Stockport, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Oldham and Huddersfield at 12.02. After here is will be at: Brighouse at 12.28 Halifax at 13.01 Bradford at 14.42 Keighley at 15.41 then through Skipton, Ilkley and on to Leeds.

iven that we have both Euro 2012 and the Olympics ahead this summer, Puffin children’s author
and literacy consultant Tom Palmer has shared his Top Ten Tips with us, to help Parents use Sport to encourage children to read. We hope you will enjoy some of his tips and help our pupils become this summer’s Reading Champions.
Tom Palmer is Author of The Squad : Black Op and other Puffin books www.tompalmer.co.uk
1. Be seen reading by your children – newspapers, magazines and books. Keep telling them about interesting things you’ve found out. 2. Have newspapers round the house, in the TV room or at breakfast – or even deliver a newspaper to their room in the morning on special sporting day 3. Look out for special edition magazines – like the Euro 2012 issues of Match, Match of the Day, FourFourTwo or World Soccer at your local library or newsagents. 4. Listen to audio books of sporting stories for trips in the car. Order them from your public library or bookshops in good time. 5. Find out when your local library is holding special Olympic or Euro 2012 events? Have they got any extra sporting bookstock in? 6. Take your child to a bookshop and let them choose one of dozens of sporting books available. Let them make the choice and be open-minded about what they choose. 7. Offer to help your school to run some Olympic or Euro 2012 reading activities. Mix sports coaching or school screenings of games with reading and writing about them. 8. Challenge them to a Euro 2012 prediction game. Find newspapers, magazines and websites together to make the best player decisions so that they can try to beat you in predicting scores and scorers. 9. Check out sports news pages online. Many of them will have competitions and interactive activities that will encourage reading and research. 10. Read Tom Palmer’s free online Euro 2012 Squad story based in Krakow and responding to this year’s tournament as it unfolds. Download it daily at www. literacytrust.org.uk

Focus on Running! “Running has given me the courage to start, the determination to keep trying, and the childlike spirit to have fun along the way. Run often and run long, but never outrun your joy of running”. Julia Isphording, who took part in the first ever Women’s Olympic Marathon, 1984.
W
ith the Spring Marathons now upon us, what better time to look at running as a sport, a hobby, a social interest and a way of life?
There is so much more to running than anybody would at first believe. What more could there possibly be to it, other than putting on some trainers and placing one foot in front of the other at a pace faster than walking? In this feature, I’d like to tell you my own story and show some of the different aspects of running which make it such a fascinating, popular, life-changing and sometimes even addictive fitness activity. Furthermore, it is there to be enjoyed by literally anybody, of any age and any fitness level; and it’s free!
The pre-curser to my relationship with running began at the age of 16 when I was not fit enough to run for 10 minutes on a treadmill. At that time I preferred to sit down in a nice comfortable chair and eat a Mars Bar. But something inside me had had enough and I didn’t want to be that person anymore. I decided to try running and found a circular route from home, which took about 25 minutes in total. I could walk/jog and slowly build up my fitness and ability, I could also shed some of those unwanted pounds. Over the next 10 years (yes, 10 years!) I did that route THOUSANDS of times and, from that moment on, running changed my life. Initially it changed
30
me more physically, as the weight dropped off and my body adapted to the regular challenge of learning a new activity and improving at it. Every single run was difficult and, a number of times I virtually pushed myself out of the house, not particularly enjoying the running if I’m being honest. But I kept putting my trainers on, even when I didn’t want to, and going out of the front door. Fast forward 16 years to now, and I know, without any doubt at all, that running has shaped aspects of me and my life that I would never have thought possible.
congratulations with those you have run alongside. I have honestly made friends this way! Second, there is joining a running club. This opened up a whole new world to me and I discovered a whole group of like-minded people and support which I had not previously considered. I now have good friends who are actually interested in talking about up-coming races, so I don’t have to bore my other half any more!
Some people have described running as a ‘lonely’ and a ‘solitary’ activity, done by those who are socially inept and would rather put in a pair of headphones than have a conversation with another human being. Is that really the case? But it isn’t. Granted, at times, I find running is MY time, when I can think my own thoughts, have my own head space and ponder any issues I may have to ponder; or simply enjoy the peace and quiet of my own footsteps in the sunshine. However I have also discovered that there is a HUGE potential for social interaction, fun and friendship through running. For me, this has happened on two main levels: One is that I have met a number of fascinating, admirable, even inspirational people at various running events, usually when you least expect to; on the bus or train to the start of a race, hanging around beforehand or afterwards while exchanging
But it is in my confidence and self belief where running has REALLY opened my eyes. Considering my teenage fitness levels, and my lack of self-confidence, I have running to thank for proving to myself that I can do anything I set my mind to! This is where the early days of pounding the streets for a miserable 25 minutes were all worthwhile because, once the physical changes began to manifest themselves, the psychological benefits began to take hold and they have continued ever since. I remember my first ever half-marathon which seemed to be the hardest thing I’d ever done. I can remember not being able to walk the next day. The important thing to me was that I had proven I could do it, regardless of my time or the aches and pains afterwards. With hundreds of races, miles, terrains and distances now behind me, I have never looked back! Rachel Parkinson

There has been a recent campaign promoting a ‘Back Pack Free Friday’ for children. This has made me increasingly concerned about how much my children carry around all day. Together with my existing worries about the amount of time they spent hunched over laptops and gaming screens, any advice to help them in the long run would be much appreciated. Most adults have experienced back pain sometime in their life - but the age that back pain starts is becoming lower all the time. Recent research has shown that 50% of fourteen year olds have already experienced back pain. The reasons for this are mixed, but a large factor is the weight that they are expected to carry. Studies have shown that 30% of children carry schoolbags weighing over 10% of their bodyweight, placing
unnecessary stress on the growing adolescent spine that could be the cause of back pain. Frequently older brothers and sisters carry their siblings, and many children help to carry the shopping home. Added to this, most children would much rather spend the evening in front of their computer or television rather than let off steam in active sport or leisure pursuits. To make matters worse, schools have reduced the time allocated
to PE and there is nothing in the national curriculum to tell children about the correct use of their bodies. Bearing in mind the current back pain figures - three in five adults in the UK today report back pain - we can only guess at how high these may climb when the next generation, already unfit, become adults. Here at Physio & Therapies, we treat a large number of children for back pain and headaches, and there seems to be a direct link with the increasing use of computers. So what can be done to prevent this escalating problem? • Make a start by ensuring that your child uses a backpack type of school bag and wears it correctly. Carrying a heavy bag over one shoulder puts your child at significant risk of back injury, the result of which may stay with them for life. BackCare, the National charity for back pain research, has worked closely with ergonomists to design a suitable bag. Visit www.backcare.org.uk for more information • Contact your child’s headteacher to ask if lockers can be provided so children are not obliged to carry all their heavy books at all times.

Help your child to organise themselves to only take to school books essential for that day’s subjects. At home, limit the time spent sitting at the computer to 30-minute sessions and encourage them to move about and play between sessions. When buying desks and chairs for home use, consider buying an ‘office’chair with a back support and a table designed to hold a computer so the screen is at the right height. Or stand the monitor on a few old copies of Yellow Pages. Try to avoid asking your child to carry heavy loads and discourage them from carrying their siblings and friends. Encourage your children to participate in sports - there is a huge range available at Todmorden Leisure Centre including classes for children to learn new skills Most importantly set a good example yourself! Try not to slouch on the sofa after tea, go for a walk through Centre Vale Park, or take the kids swimming - you’ll be surprised how much more energised it makes you feel and it might relieve your back ache!
