Louisville is starting 2013 off with positive accolades, which is great for our city and our industry. At the end of last year our city was named as the top US travel destination by Lonely Planet. The online travel authority named Louisville as the top destination because of the exciting developments and transformations occurring in downtown, specifically around the NuLu district and in the Highlands. The Urban Bourbon Trail and our many local culinary attractions have really put Louisville on the map!

Louisville was named to the top 10 “Healthy” housing markets going into 2013. Our city was recognized for having strong labor growth, low vacancy rates and a low foreclosure inventory. Another distinction that we recently received came from Trulia.com, a top Real Estate website. Louisville was named to the top 10 “Healthy” housing markets going into 2013. Our city was recognized for having strong labor growth, low vacancy rates (so low that new construction is warranted!) and a low foreclosure inventory. This recognition is significant to the building industry and is yet another reassurance that we truly are in recovery.

As the market does return to its new normal beginning this year the Association is creating ways to support your businesses and help you grow. As the market does return to its new normal beginning this year the Association is creating ways to support your businesses and help you grow. We are excited about some of the new opportunities and products that we will be offering members this year, which include our re-invented website, the Home Product Expo – Fall Edition, and a new home and garden lifestyle publication due out in the fall. Each of these new components to our Association adds ad-

ditional ways to our already extensive list of opportunities to connect members to customers, which is one of our top priorities on behalf of members. In the first quarter of this year we will be producing the Home Product Expo in Shepherdsville January 12 and 13, Table Top Night on February 7th and the Home, Garden & Remodeling Show presented by Window World of Louisville March 1-3. These are outstanding ways for you to jump start your selling season and begin to develop leads to last the year for new customers. Please mark your calendars to participate in or attend each of these events.

All of our committees welcome new members and it’s not too late to become involved in the planning for 2013. I encourage you to become involved in the Association. There are a variety of committees which you can become involved. Our Executive Committee and Board, as well as all of our committee chairpersons are working hard on all members’ behalf to plan educational and networking events, conduct advocacy efforts at the local, state and national levels, and continuing to provide a variety of ways to connect you with your customer and increase your bottom line. All of our committees welcome new members and it’s not too late to become involved in the planning for 2013. We look forward to helping you achieve your business plan in the New Year. If the rest of the year stays as positive as it’s begun, I think we’re all going to have an outstanding 2013. Sincerely,

Charles J. Kavanaugh Executive Vice President Home Builders Association of Louisville

At RJ Thieneman, he oversees residential development and construction. He also builds homes under the name of Estate Homes and is principal broker of Louisville Realty Group. He holds a bachelors of business administration degree in real estate from Eastern Kentucky University. Thieneman has served on the Registered Builder Committee, along with the Building Industry Charitable Foundation, the Sales & Marketing Council and the Commercial Council. In addition to serving 20 years on the HBAL Board, he has also chaired the Land Development, Membership and Best New Homes Committees, as well as HIPAC. Bob has been married to wife Beverly for 27 years. They have two children, R.J. Thieneman III and Chelsey. When he’s not working, he enjoys traveling with family, golf, biking, hiking and reading. Bob originally began his involvement in HBAL as a way to give back to the industry that had been good to him. “I feel that we all have a responsibility to give back in some way, whether that’s through church or community or both. What makes me want to stay involved is the fact that we make a difference here. Anyone who takes the time to get involved will quickly understand that their efforts mean something.” He believes that HBAL is an organization that can make a difference in the community and beyond. “What we’re doing as a united front through HBAL makes a difference in our industry. Without the association, it would be a much different building landscape.”

He currently serves on the Land Development and Technology Committees and is chair of the Codes and Standards Committee. He has lived in and been actively involved in the Anchorage-Middletown community as a member of the Middletown Lions Club, serving in the past as chairman of the Middletown Historic District, coaching and board member of MRA (Louisville East Sports), and continues to be active with his church. Perry said that he first became interested in leading the association when getting involved in the Education Committee. “I put leadership off a while, as we were involved in raising the girls and traveling with their sports.” For Perry, his HBAL membership means staying engaged with a continually-changing industry. “The more engaged, the more informed we are. This allows us the opportunity to add in shaping the future of our industry.”

PAT DURHAM Pat Durham Builder, Inc.

Treasurer Pat Durham has been a member of HBAL since 1988. He has been building homes since 1995 and holds a degree in policy analysis (political science) with a minor in economics from the University of Louisville. Pat has been married to wife Laurel, who works for Humana’s Medicare Division, for 26 years. They have two sons, Nick and Ethan. He enjoys running, exercise, golf and reading. For Pat, membership in HBAL means that he stays connected with the relevant issues facing the industry. “By getting involved with various committees, membership affords all of us the opportunity to participate in decision making that affects our livelihood. By being informed on the facts and topics which we all face in our day-to-day business, we can be best prepared to deal with the issues that are important to us. Without our association looking out for us and being on the forefront of the issues, we would certainly be less able to impact our futures.”

What’s the Plan for 2013? HBAL Focuses on Key Priorities and New Ideas By Stacy Smith Rogers, Grace Communications, LLC

January is a time of fresh starts, new ideas and a renewed enthusiasm for working toward progress. This January, HBAL is equipped with a plan to make 2013 productive, innovative and ambitious. As the slowly rebounding economy shows signs of improvement locally, members are eager to make the most of what the last few years has taught them and re-group, re-structure and move forward. And, so is HBAL. It’s planting the seed early in the year in anticipation of steady growth both for the association as well as members’ businesses. What does the association already do well? HBAL connects members with customers; maintains the highest level possible of advocacy efforts for residential and commercial builders, remodelers and developers at the local, state and national levels; offers value-driven benefits such as affordable insurance (AGC-SIF Worker’s Comp, general liability and healthcare); and provides access to education training and internal networking. These are just some of the reasons why being a member of HBAL makes sense. But the association isn’t resting on its benefits alone. It’s working hard to expand and improve its offerings to better serve its current and prospective members. This year, HBAL will reach out to new audiences, re-define some of its staff assignments to be more productive and contemplate how the association can best comprehensively serve its diverse member base. In November of 2012, HBAL’s staff and Executive Committee met to discuss plans for 2013. HBAL Executive Vice President Chuck Kavanaugh, along with association staff, have been hard at work, doing research, defining logistics and beginning implementation of some of the ideas that will foster success this year. Here are a few ways, the association will be working on behalf of its members in 2013 ... Expansion of Membership Base According to Kavanaugh, membership growth and retention is a top priority, with extra efforts being put into place to identify new and emerging businesses that are coming into the building market. To better serve and expand the membership, HBAL is re-organizing staff responsibilities and hiring a membership manager to actively pursue 12 louisville builder • hbal.com

new members and promote HBAL to untapped segments of the local construction industry. Efforts to expand the Commercial Council and reach out to minority-owned businesses will be priorities as well. “We basically want everyone who builds in the Louisville area to know the benefits of HBAL. We hope to gain more representatives of urban building as well.” Traditionally, HBAL’s members have consisted of strictly residential building and remodeling professionals and industry representatives who supply products and services to them. However, professionals from other areas of building face many of the same issues as those in the residential market. This year, HBAL will work toward expanding its membership base to include more professionals in the commercial sector as well as new start-ups in construction and supply businesses.

Everyone’s voices need to be singing from the same hymnal, and to do that, we need to continue to e xpand our membership base.” - Bob Thieneman, Jr.

Thieneman, emphasized the future of the association hinges on the expansion and broadening of its membership base. “In years past, we were more exclusively focused on residential building. As the industry has changed and we’ve expanded our membership to include more professionals from the remodeling and commercial and multi-family building industries, we realize that we’re all dealing with the same problems. It’s important that we tackle those issues together so we can accomplish more. Everyone’s voices need to be singing from the same hymnal, and to do that, we need to continue to expand our membership base.” HBAL Treasurer Pat Durham noted that increased involvement by members is critical to the success of the association in 2013, “I hope that each member of our association can realize the good that can come from the many wonderful things HBAL offers. Whether it

What’s the Plan for 2013? means finding that sub-committee that interests you and getting immersed into it, or taking advantage of any of our promotional opportunities to help increase your business, or simply networking at some of our many functions, there is something for everyone.” In addition to recruiting new members, efforts will be made to reach out to younger members and communicate the importance of becoming more actively involved. Thieneman said that technology will play a big role in the evolution of HBAL in the near future and its efforts to reach that audience. “Our younger members are an unspoken voice within HBAL. As we move forward, we plan to use technology to reach out to them and encourage them to be more active, as they are the future of our association.” Expansion of Sales & Marketing Council membership is also a priority, with emphasis on attracting more real estate professionals. According to Kavanaugh, additional efforts will be made to see what kind of services members who are active in the rental market need to advance their businesses. “We want to engage those members who may be renting out homes they weren’t able to sell in recent years and see what their needs are and how we can assist them. As we move forward, continued attention will be paid to the rental market in general to expand and develop more comprehensive services that will benefit new and existing members,’” he explained. Continued Advocacy Continued emphasis on advocacy on behalf of the residential and commercial construction and development industry at the local, state and national levels will be a big priority this year. “There are a lot of issues we need to deal with now -- a lot of new rules and code issues that affect all of us,” said Secretary Don Karem, Karem Built Homes. “ HBAL is an important outlet for advocating on behalf our industry.” Among the issues that HBAL plans to focus on in 2013 are: • Mayor’s 25 Year Vision for the Built Environment • Regional Sanitary Sewer System • Floyds Fork TMDL & Plan • Sidewalk Transition Plan • Revised Storm Water Regulations • Louisville Land Development Code Update • Bullitt County Land Use Comprehensive Plan Enhanced Communications One of the main goals for the association is to enhance its communications efforts through a variety of ways. Externally, the Advertising & PR Committee is developing an integrated advertising and public relations plan. Chair Stan Logan, Jr., Logan Lavelle Hunt, described the reasons for the plan, “We want to deliver a consistent, calculated message on a regular basis. The key is to develop a plan that incorporates various media for communicating our messages – through social media, the website and through press releases. The communications calendar is already pretty full with our major events, but we need to plug in the gaps with continued messaging.” Continued promotion of hbal.com will emphasize the fact that it’s the most comprehensive resource for information about regional building products and services in Greater Louisville. “Our website is the largest resource for anything related to home building and improvement products and services in Greater Louisville. It also has the

most comprehensive list of new communities and building and remodeling professionals. We want people to know hbal.com is a valuable resource they can use to find trusted building professionals and anything related to homes,” Kavanaugh said. Fall Home Product and Remodeling Magazine Another new idea is taking shape in the fall. A home product and remodeling magazine is in the works that will serve as a “lifestyle” publication which will likely highlight interior design, floor plans, colors, use of space and other creative home ideas. According to HBAL Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications Tara Brinkmoeller, the publication will feature a lot of photos and useful and inspirational articles that will be short and easy to read. Brinkmoeller elaborated, “Of course, we always aim to promote new homes, remodeling and our members through the content in our publications. We anticipate printing a short companion piece that would be tipped-in to a specific number of copies with the new Fall Show information and will be distributed there on-site to serve as the guide.” Brinkmoeller said that they plan to highlight some of the trends seen at Homearama 2013 and expand on them in articles, checklists, product features and more. Senior Account Executive Melissa Mattingly has been selling advertising for the new 10,000-circulation magazine. “The magazine will debut at the fall home show, which we anticipate will draw good crowds. It will be perfect timing to advertisers to reach audiences who are actively looking for ideas, companies and products to enrich their residential lifestyles.” HBAL Home Show Events to Grow HBAL’s public events have garnered much attention for members and the local building and remodeling industries. In recent years, additional emphasis has been placed on heightening awareness for the diverse offering of products and services offered by HBAL members. Now in the second year of a three-year plan to makeover the Home, Garden and Remodeling Show, HBAL has added unique aspects to the Show to help draw potential customers. Building upon the success of the free Home Product Expo held in Bullitt County, this month , the association is making way for a fall event, appropriately titled, Home Product Expo: Fall Edition held in Jefferson County. The intention is to enable members to expand their reach to customers and appeal to people who are planning ahead for spring projects or still wrapping up their fall home improvement plans. HBAL Vice President of Events and Operations Gail Schell explained, “The fall home show will provide companies in the home building and remodeling industry yet another avenue to connect with potential customers. That time of year is typically when some companies slow down, and it really has nothing to do with them be able to do the work in colder months. It just seems that when colder weather sets in the remodeling projects get a bit removed from people’s thoughts. Hopefully, this home show will give them the push they need to get some projects done around the house before the holidays.” Schell said that she believes the event will be well-received by the public. It’s scheduled to be hosted at the Ramada Plaza Louisville October 19-20, 2012. “Window World of Louisville has committed to be our sponsor for the event and we are anticipating 100 to 120 companies will be represented.” Review of Education Classes The Education Committee met in December to review the existing classes for relevance to be sure that they are still on point for members. Chair Paul Miele, K-I Lumber, elaborated, “We hope to incorporate classes that will engage and attract more associate members in the future, as well as january 2013 13

What’s the Plan for 2013? new class ideas, such as a class that educates members on how to best utilize the hbal.com website to market and improve member businesses.” Miele said that the Education Committee plans to consider classes and topics that are relevant to members of the Commercial Council as well. What Do HBAL Staff Members Look Forward to in 2013? HBAL staff offer assistance to members in a variety of ways. Many of them have long-standing careers with HBAL. In addition to Executive Vice President Chuck Kavanaugh, the HBAL staff has nearly 150 years combined experience working on behalf of the local building industry. New Products for Inside and Outside the Home

Energize the Market By Nancy Miller

Barry Foster, Owner Window World of Louisville

Paul Hirsbrunner, Buyer PC Home Center

We are the new exclusive dealer in the area for Sunspace. The Sunspace Model 200 sun room is different from anything I’ve ever seen. It’s amazing because in the past, the options for installing a sunroom in a home that had an existing sun porch with storm windows was to tear it down and install a $30,000 - $40,000 sunroom, or to rebuild the space. But with this new product we remove the storm windows or screens and build the window units to fit the existing openings. We can then finish according to the customer’s budget. It’s a very modular process made with 2” foam panels and extrusions. The walls incorporate a versatile four-track vinyl window system. Vents are glazed with ViewFlex, a resilient vinyl that comes in clear, smoke grey, dark grey or bronze. The window units slide up or down allowing a generous 75% ventilation opening. Homeowners will be able to enjoy the outdoors without worrying about insects, extreme heat, chilling winds or humidity. The new system even stands up to 180 mph winds.

Versetta Stone by Boral is a panelized stone veneer that can be used on the exterior of a house, fireplace or outdoor cooking area. Made from 50% recycled content, it is produced in small sheets and is nailed on framing just like vinyl siding, requiring no additional footings for support. Unlike installing stone on an accent or gable, which can be difficult, Versetta is very easy to apply. It’s an excellent product that withstands freezes, thaws, winds and heat. Artisan siding, manufactured by James Hardie, is 5/8”, which is thicker than conventional siding and has a deeper profile. It lays flat against the wall and is easy to install. The corners can be mitered rather than using trim boards, if desired. FastenMaster has two really interesting new products. TrussLOK is an engineered wood fastener designed for joining multiply LVL, LSL and PSL. It’s stronger than through-bolts and other structural self-drilling fasteners with similar diameters. And it can be used for single-sided installation unlike nails and other screws that need to be installed from both sides. There’s no predrilling so it’s faster and easier than through bolts. With the correct thread length for engineered lumber, there’s no board jacking. It prevents gapping or cupping between plies which can occur in nailed applications. TimberLOK, also by FastenMaster, is a new product to secure roof framing to walls. It replaces 3/8” lag screws. Instead of using hurricane anchors, you can use a screw to run up through the top plate into the rafter. Its sharp point and threads get right into the densest woods. The tapered head countersinks easily into wood, giving a flush appearance. It is available in lengths ranging from 2 ½” to 10”.

Gene Helm, Account Development Manager PPG Porter Paints On new construction, the standard for many years was an interior alkyd enamel trim paint that was oil based, very hard and durable, and had a rich, porcelain-like finish. In recent years the EPA has been making the VOC standards for paints much more stringent. A lot of contractors have been moving away from that product to water based paint, but water based products don’t have some of the same desired characteristics. We have introduced a new water reducible alkyd paint that has lower VOCs and lower odor. Yet it can be cleaned up with soap and water and has a hard, durable finish. It flows and levels well when brushing and can be spray applied. The price point is comparable and it’s available in all 1890 colors and two sheens, satin and gloss. We’re excited because it’s the best of both worlds. There are many opportunities for it in the builder market.

Terry Marburger, AKBD Trend Appliances In the United States, we’re finally catching up to Europe which uses about 70% induction cooking and Canada which uses about 30%. january 2013 17

New Products Thermador’s new Freedom induction cooktop is remarkable because it allows up to four pots and pans, of any shape or size, to be put on the surface. If a pot needs to be moved to another location, the cooktop will transfer all programmed settings to the new position of the pan. It has a 6 ½” wide color control pad in the center that indicates the placement of each pot or pan and what temperature is set for each one. With a 4600 watt power boost, it will boost about 50 percent faster than a gas cooktop. Also unusual is its overflow system with an alarm that sounds whenever liquid hits the surface. Another safety feature is that it will not activate small items the elderly or children may drop on the surface. It simply won’t come on by itself.

“In the United States, we’re finally catching up to Europe which uses about 70% induction cooking and Canada which uses about 30%.” - Terry Marburger

Thermador also has a new 48” pro commercial range that has a gas cooktop and electric oven. The Pro Grand Commercial Depth Dual Fuel Steam Range offers an extra low simmering feature, 22,000 BTUs power burner, titanium griddle and grill, a large capacity convection oven, warming drawer, and steam and convection oven. Especially nice for the Louisville area, GE is bringing refrigeration back to Appliance Park. Kind of unusual for the price point is that they have dual evaporators with separate control air flow between the refrigerator and freezer. It’s generally only in the higher price points that such technology is available. Top loads seem to be coming back in favor, particularly high efficiency units. Of course, the biggest thing most people ask for in the upper end is steam on the dryer. Both whirlpool and GE have that. It’s great if you have an article you don’t want to take to the dry cleaner but want to remove the wrinkles and wear again. Paul Miele, Vice President and General Sales Manager K-I Lumber and Building Materials Temple-Inland has introduced QuietBrace, a product that goes on the studs before house wrap. We brought it in because the price of OSB just keeps escalating dramatically. This can take its place and is 3035% less expensive. It makes a lot of sense to builders. It’s a sounddeadening, structural fiberboard wall sheathing, a panel product made from 100% pine wood chips generated from sawmill residue. It has a density between 10 and 31 pounds per cubic foot. The bond is established by interfelting the fibers and is enhanced with a natural binder. A no added urea-formaldehyde material, QuietBrace is manufactured with 100% pine wood chips generated from sawmill residue. Asphalt coating on both sides and the edges provides additional strength and water protection. Trex is such a popular product. Now they’ve come out with Trex Transcends Flooring and Railing System. It will definitely help with curb appeal for a front porch and it’s ideal for an outdoor living space. As opposed to traditional Trex decking which is 6” wide, the flooring is 4 ½” wide. Because of the board profile and hidden fasteners, the flooring finishes smooth and practically gap free. Available in colors such as spiced rum, firepit and gravel pit, it carries the Trex 25-year fade and stain warranty. The railing option has a new handrail and bottom rail shape that addresses architectural and style preferences, offering an alternative to the traditional crown profile railing. The beveled railing pairs well with existing Trex Transcends railing post sleeves, 18 louisville builder • hbal.com

skirts, caps and baluster options. It is available in seven colors. Trex’s line of shelled composite decking and railing, Trex Select, protects against severe weather, foot traffic and outdoor mishaps. It resists stains and mold, has a splinter free finish, and requires no sanding, staining or painting, and washes off with soap and water. When considering what brings the highest return on an investment, kitchens and baths usually come to mind. However, fiber cement siding, such as our James Hardie product, has been the number one return on investment for six years running. Thinking about siding differently is a value that builders and remodelers can sell to their customers. Mike Quinn Manager, Bonnycastle Appliance and TV Most people object to the smell and time it takes to clean the oven. They’ll appreciate Whirlpool’s AquaLift, an innovative oven cleaning system. While cleaning, the temperature stays below 200º compared to ovens that require heat of up to 800º during the self-cleaning cycle. The ranges have an enamel oven coating that activates with water and low heat, allowing moisture to release tough baked-on debris. In an hour or less, the oven is ready for a final wipe down. Also from Whirlpool, there’s good news for the replacement market. We often run into people with older homes in which ovens need to be replaced. That may require a cabinet company or installation specialist to trim out the cabinets, But with the new FIT system that seldom happens. The system has adaptable feet and trim options, actually trim work that goes around the edges and contracts or expands, that make it easy to replace single and double wall ovens with the existing cabinets. Whirlpool will even pay up to $250 toward cabinets if the system doesn’t work. European and American dishwashers operate differently. The European models have always been green and energy efficient. Now American dishwashers are following their operations. GE has a new Hybrid stainless steel dishwasher, built at Appliance Park, that has their most advance wash system that is 65% more effective than previous models. They have still incorporated their hard food disposer, but have added a filter that is used on higher end dishwashers. They’re starting to bring it out on all their models. Steam has been out for quite a few years, but manufacturers keep enhancing steam products. Wolf has a convection steam oven with several cooking modes such as steam, reheat, auto steam bake, convection, convection humid, convection steam, Wolf gourmet and slow roast. Multiple dishes may be cooked together and there is no transfer of flavors. Another benefit is that fat can be reduced or eliminated without compromising taste. And Thermador has a new pro range that has a steam oven in it. Steam is here to stay. In the future, I think it will trickle down into more mainstream appliances. Consumers are so into healthy cooking and steam ovens are great for that. They don’t have a downside. Anything that can be baked in a regular oven can be made in a steam oven. And things such as green beans come out bright green with no loss of nutrients. Steam isn’t just confined to ovens. There are some terrific steam dishwashers, washers and dryers. We’re also seeing more induction cooking. Until recently, pan size has been critical for induction ranges. But Thermador has introduced the Freedom Induction Cooktop (36” wide x 21” deep) that has 48 elements that offer more than 63% usable cooking surface than other models. Up to four pots or pans may be placed anywhere on the cooking surface. Of course, it is a glass surface and it requires magnetized cookware.

item. It will be lightweight, UV resistant, hygienic, easy to clean, and will find a niche in kitchens, baths and outdoor applications.

Greg Turner, Retail Manager Carpet Specialists

Tim Slayton, Sales Manager Cardinal Kitchens Textured surfaces on stone continue to make an impact in our market. As the consumer gains more knowledge of the different textures available to them, we have seen demand for these products go through the roof. Creating a unique finish, something other than polished, on both granite and quartz is now in vogue with all segments of our business. The demand for quartz countertops has also increased, largely due to one reason: the newest colors show much more movement in pattern, which has taken the color palette in a fresh direction. Moving away from the fine particulates continues to spark interest. Another thing quartz manufacturers have done is to develop an integral sink. We’ve never before seen this with quartz and expect that this application will do well. Looking ahead, we think we’ll see newer, more innovative products available in the near future. I believe porcelain will be the next hot

When our parents bought furniture they’d buy pieces that were top of the line because they wouldn’t be thrown away in just a few years. The same held true for rugs. But today, people buy less expensive furniture and rugs, predicting that they’ll use them for only five or ten years. They’re usually not going to buy a really nice half knotted rug. So we’ll show them products that will fit that plan. For a long time there was a lot of interest in area rugs with fringe, but there is a trend away from that toward transitional rugs without borders. Carpet preferences are also more transitional than traditional. We are now able to offer an extensive line of new products through Stark. While in the past Stark has been very designer driven and has offered their line for sale only through designers, they recently chose ten stores in the United States in which to put their samples. We are so excited that they chose us. Luxury vinyl tile is enormously popular and is getting even more so. Companies have done such a wonderful job with their visuals of both wood and tile that luxury vinyl is often the flooring of choice for many spaces, frequently those on the lower levels of houses. That they can be clicked together instead of glued down leads to much greater ease of installation. It seems like there are constantly new products in the category.

Interpretation regarding deck attachment The Codes and Standards Committee worked with Phil Craig, Assistant Director, State Division of Building Code Enforcement and Dave Marchal, Jefferson County Inspections, Permits and licensing to get a final interpretation regarding deck attachment and the application of R502.2.2.2 of the Kentucky Residential Code. The following statements were made pertaining to this issue: “I have researched your question and talked with one of the guys that proposed this change and the intent of the code change are to not allow the use of stone or masonry veneer as the supporting element for the ledger board for the deck. We also agreed that one could drill through the stone or masonry veneer and lag or bolt (preferred) into the band board of the house for the structural support with appropriate attachment for the ledger board. You cannot use the stone or masonry veneer itself for the support. A good example would be drilling into the stone or masonry veneer and installing a lead expansion shield or an expansion bolt into it and that being your support. This will not be accepted.” - Phil Craig “Please be advised of the interpretation we have from the state DHBC regarding deck attachment and the application of R502.2.2.2 of the Kentucky Residential Code. We will be following suit and allowing the bolts of a deck ledger board to go through the brick to be attached to the band board of the house. We will advise office and field staff accordingly. Please let me know if you or other contractors are running into inconsistent calls on this so that I can address.” - Dave Marchal To submit your news email Tara Brinkmoeller at Tara@hbal.com. january 2013 23
