The Sales and Marketing Council (SMC) recognizes SMC members annually for their achievements in several categories, including real estate agents and mortgage sales, marketing designs and campaigns in housing, development, and general advertising. The awards provide an opportunity for members to be recognized for their outstanding work and to stand out amongst their peers.

Rodny Davidson, First Community Mortgage and Chairman of the Sales and Marketing Council, has worked extensively with the SMC Executive Committee this year to improve the submission process for the 2015 SMC Awards of Excellence. You may now submit your entry completely online at www.bialouisville.com/ SMCAwards. Work created or completed November 1, 2014 through October 31, 2015 is eligible.

Only members of the BIA Sales and Marketing Council may submit an application for the Personal Achievement Awards. These awards have been modified this year to expand the opportunity to recognize more SMC members’ sales achievements. A category has also been added to recognize Group/Team sales for both on-site and new home sales agents. Group/ Team submissions are for sales that are split or shared by two or more people. Any sales submitted as a group may not also be used as part of an individual submission.

The SMC Awards of Excellence will be presented in January, 2016. In addition to recognizing your business at the awards, the BIA will also promote the winners in Louisville Builder magazine, on the BIA Facebook page, and through press releases sent to local media. Internal Fundraising Drive to Spark Awareness and Support for Worthwhile Causes and Opportunities for Members to Make a Difference

BIA’s Building Industry Charitable Foundation (BICF) serves as the association’s charitable arm, stretching into the lives of families in Greater Louisville and making a difference through the collective spirit of giving and providing services for others.

Throughout the last six years, BICF has tugged at heartstrings and empowered people of all ages to serve the community with its playhouses and projects for people with special needs, veterans and those in need. There’s something truly incredible that happens when BICF touches the lives of those who participate.

Now, the association wants to take “incredible” one step further, and members are encouraged to help.

First-Ever Internal Fundraising Drive Kicks off November 2 Most members have heard of BICF, but this fall the association is hoping that each of them will gain a better understanding of the role BICF plays in the community and how it’s making an impact on those it benefits and those who foster its growth. fundraising drive will be held the first half of the month (November 2-13), with an official “call day” on November 5th. The first of its kind for BICF, this organized outreach includes five teams comprised of dedicated BIA members who are on a mission to increase internal awareness and support for the foundation, and to ultimately expand the impact of the building industry on the community.

Why is BICF Fundraising Internally?

Aaron Esposito, Esposito Construction, is leading the fundraising drive efforts. He explained the importance of this initiative.

“We’re taking more of a grassroots approach, growing money and awareness of the foundation from the ground up. There have been different outreach efforts in the past where we looked outside for the big donors, but right now we’re focusing on trying to involve our local membership and make them aware of all the foundation does,” he said.

Involvement, Esposito said, is key to BICF’s success. While

BICF: Expanding its Reach big donations are certainly welcome, he said the focus is to simply get more people involved. Future external donors will look at the amount of support BICF generates within. If the number of people who support it internally grows, so might the interest in external support. Esposito said the foundation needs both the financial and moral support to move forward with additional projects in the future. “We often get requests from people who might need something simple, like a ramp to an elderly person’s home, or more detailed, like converting a living space for a veteran. We want to be able to say ‘yes’ to more of those kind of projects,” he said.

For Esposito and many other committed BICF Committee members, being active with fundraising for the foundation is something they feel called to do. “If you’re successful in your profession, most people feel a sense of wanting to give back. It makes you feel good when you do good for others. The playhouse project is a perfect example. Seeing those children’s faces light up just makes something swell up inside you. It just makes you feel good. It’s a win for everyone,” Esposito explained.

BICF Chair Brandon Bailey, Bailey Construction & Remodeling, elaborated, “We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished thus far, and I believe we’ve set the stage for future success. Now, we have a process for raising money, and we’re asking people for support.” According to Bailey, the annual budget for BICF is $25,000. The committee would like to double that. “We haven’t really given people the opportunity to give in this way. We have a good portfolio of work under our belt now, and I think we can demonstrate that the money is being used in a meaningful way.”

With more involvement through donations, Bailey believes there will be more activity in people volunteering their services.

“We would rather have more people give less, than less people giving more.”

Impacting Children and Their Families Most people associate BICF with playhouses.Designed to be much more than a venue for having fun, these playhouses have offered valuable therapeutic benefits for children physically, while also empowering them to be more independent and social. There’s no doubt that the playhouses are making a difference in the physical and social development of the children who have received them and the functioning of their family as a whole. Here’s what a few of the families had to say: “For years, children with disabilities were just overlooked. There wasn’t much attention for them or their caregivers. Things like this have helped change that in a positive way.”

BICF: Expanding its Reach About BICF and Its Mission Along with helping families who have special needs children, BICF is committed to assisting adults who are also impaired physically or mentally. BIA Secretary Mark Simpson, Simpson Builders, vets the projects that are proposed to BIA to ensure they fit the mission. In some cases, he steps up and simply does the job himself, as was the case of a recent project coordinated with the Day Spring Foundation, which empowers adults with intellectual disabilities to live fulfilling lives by offering support in a residential setting. Simpson teamed up with Mark Eliason and his daughter Summer Jenkins of Jenkins Eliason Interiors to freshen up the living environment for eight mentally handicapped women with new paint, floor coverings, tile back splashes and lighting selections. BICF covered the costs that weren’t donated, but Simpson said he was impressed with how many people donated their time, services and products to make this project possible. “I’m always amazed at the response when you ask people in this community for help. I didn’t realize how generous this city was until I was talking to someone else who lived elsewhere and they explained their community had a different mindset than ours.”

Last year, Redsmith Construction helped transform a commercial kitchen space into a home for a man with cerebral palsy who had been hit by a car, further limiting his mobility and daily functioning. Other BIA members have stepped up in recent years to take on projects of their own, including Jack Band who recently took the lead on remodeling the first home to be completed in the Greater New Beginnings Housing Project in the California community of the West End of Louisville. It’s 1946 SOCIETY The 1946 Society is a designation within BICF that was created to offer participants recognition for their financial contributions. It is deemed the 1946 Society because the association was founded in 1946 with a mission to help better the community. The 1946 Society includes corporate donors who have given a minimum of $5,000 per year and individual donors who have given a minimum of $500 per year, each for five years.

obvious that the giving spirit thrives within the membership of BIA. Through BICF, the association hopes to enable more members to make an impact on the community.

BICF – A Donation That Counts End-of-year giving offers individuals a chance to make an impact in their communities, while benefitting from of a tax deduction come April 15. A gift to BICF can make a difference in the community, well beyond the boundaries of the construction industry. With increased funding, the foundation can say “yes” to more projects in the future.

BICF Committee Offers a Great Way to Network and Make a Difference BICF has broadened the reach of members’ ability to touch the lives of families throughout Greater Louisville. Through the generosity of members, it will continue to grow and affect others. The Power of Communication in Today’s Marketplace

Communicating with a client has never been more critical than it is today. Customers want to feel a connection with the product or service they are buying, whether that’s shoes or houses or something in between. With so many communication paths available, especially through social media, it’s important to ensure your message is interpreted the way you intend it to be.

How you communicate and the tone of your message can be the difference between landing the client or driving them away. Ever receive a text message from a friend that you had to read more than twice, trying to figure out what their intentions were? Between auto correct spelling and the swift nature of texting, it can be hard. Chances are, you’re not texting clients to get your message across (at least we hope not), but a poorly crafted email, tweet or Facebook post might have the same confusing effect. In this fast-paced world of communicating, take the time to ask yourself with each outreach, “Is this the message I want to communicate?”

Be Authentic Customers (especially Millennials) can smell a fake in a few seconds flat. If you claim something to be true, make sure it is.

Remember Will Ferrel in the classic holiday movie “Elf ” when he bursts into the New York City coffee shop excitedly commending them for serving “the world’s greatest cup of coffee?”

Everyone stopped and stared, while Ferrel (dressed in his elf suit) innocently made them realize ridiculousness of that claim.

“Congratulations! You did it! World’s Best Cup of Coffee!” It’s hard to prove that the product or service you’re selling is “the best, most popular or highest quality.” You can, however, demonstrate your commitment to striving for those identifiers by communicating your experience or process behind your product. Do this through storytelling and visuals, perhaps even interviews with your staff or testimonials from your clients.

Every successful business is unique. If your employees collectively do something that sets them apart, showcase that too.

The Marketing Rule of Seven In the 1930s, the movie industry researched what it took to compel someone to head to the theater and actually purchase a ticket for a show. Studio bosses concluded that it took hearing the advertiser’s message seven times to call the moviegoer to action. While the research might be dated, the findings still apply today. “Touching” a client at least seven times is a good rule to follow if you want your marketing efforts to succeed. Consistent communication is the key. Through blog posts, advertisements, sponsorships and social media, finding seven ways to touch someone is easy. A Functional and Aesthetic Duo That Works Its Magic

Lighting can be amazing and magical. But just as easily it can ruin the aesthetics of a room. Simply stated, lighting is a style statement. What isn’t so simple is selecting the right lighting for each application.

“The idea that lighting is the jewelry of the home is so true.

Just like jewelry, it can be overstated or understated. If the design of a room is simplistic, it may need a big focal point of lighting. But if there are several design features present in a room, lighting should be more subtle,” says Lisa Knight of Lisa Lynn Designs. She adds that mixing types of lighting throughout the house can give each room its own character.

John Rueff of Brecher’s Lighting emphasizes the importance of lighting when he says that its power of design can complement or detract from furniture, flooring, paint colors and wallcovering. “Customers can become overwhelmed by the many choices of lighting. We try to help them focus, first by defining their tastes ‒ contemporary or traditional, or an in between transitional. pull together their furniture and cabinetry, and we discuss how to integrate lighting with their colors and hardware. We will provide direction but we also encourage them to think outside the box,” he says.

It’s not uncommon for someone to concentrate on only one central light, such as a chandelier. “We explain that they need multiple light sources, especially in a room that has multiple purposes. We also explain why lighting shouldn’t be left as an afterthought since wiring will be required,” says Mischell Hutto of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery.

The move toward LED remains strong throughout the lighting industry. Technological advancements have made LEDs more attractive and design-friendly. They emit flattering light and they don’t become hot, as did their predecessors. Also, they’re now available in many shapes and sizes, even as track lighting and exterior lighting. Consumers are now recognizing that the additional upfront cost will pay for itself several times over because of LEDs’ long life.

Louisville Builder uncovered some lighting trends that are hitting the design world in a big way.

Hutto is observing that chandeliers aren’t as large and overbearing as they have been in the past. Along with that change, Jennifer Scott of PC Home Stores is seeing fewer, but larger, pendants over islands. They provide good light and have the additional benefit of taking up less space.

“No longer is there only one light over a dining or eating area.

There may be two or three fixtures of varying sizes and height.

Or, they may have a common theme, such as a rustic look, but they’re all in the same finish, such as oil-rubbed bronze. The main considerations should be an appropriate amount of light and the right spacing and height of each light,” says Knight.

Overhead lighting is being used in interesting, new places, such as above a chair or in a tight spot of a corner or nook. Hanging small chandeliers above the night stands, with a light switch by the bed, is super cool. They free up the nightstand for clocks and books. And they give the bedroom a little more glam.

“The current thinking is that it’s acceptable to vary fixture finishes throughout the house. Finishes are similar to wall colors; you wouldn’t paint every room the same color. But in any one room we try to coordinate the finishes and at least keep them in the same family,” Rueff says.

Bathroom lighting is extremely important in creating the perfect space for grooming and relaxation, according to Allie Bloyd of Builders Surplus. She advises layering light sources rather than using only one type of lighting, and suggests diffusing natural light with a white curtain made of a light fabric, and diffusing indoor light sources with frosted shades. She has some tips for expertly designed bathroom lighting: • Task lighting is the primary light source in the room; in smaller bathrooms it may be the only light needed. For double vanities, consider a third, vertical light source at eye level in the center of the vanity. It will prevent the harsh shadows that could result from overhead lighting.

• Accent lighting may highlight a focal point like a freestanding tub, shower or piece of art. But it can also give the entire space an inviting glow. Accent lights may include a chandelier, recessed lighting, rope lighting, a backlit mirror or shelf lighting. When they are put on a dimmer, they can function as ambient lighting.

• The function of decorative lighting, perhaps an eye-candy chandelier, is usually secondary to its appearance.

Ambient lighting, which can bounce off the ceiling or walls to create a soft glow, sets the mood of the room.

Now in its 6th year, the event has gained a reputation for drawing audiences who are serious about making home improvements in the near future.

The intimate atmosphere and easy-to-navigate layout of the Home Product Expo makes it very user-friendly for vendors and attendees alike. This year, BIA will introduce the River Crest development in Mt. Washington as the co-host of Homearama 2016 along with Norton Commons. River Crest developers will be on hand to answer questions about the new development and to generate interest in Homearama and home building in general.

Bernie Smith, BCS Cabinets, is returning for the company’s second year in the show. “I was very pleased last year with the response. The people I had the opportunity to speak with were truly looking. Between lead generation and the amount of business that increased for us, it turned out well.” Smith said that as a custom cabinet company, they focus on showcasing products and designs that make sense for the customers who come to the event.

“I like the Home Product Expo because it’s smaller and you have a chance to talk to customers one-on-one. We do all the shows and this one is quaint, friendly, and the customers who come are interested and are coming in for a purpose.” Welker said that in addition to vacuums, air purifiers are a hot item right now with customers who are concerned with indoor air quality.

The Sales & Marketing Council (SMC) of BIA is hosting its call for entries for the annual SMC Awards of Excellence, a long-standing program that promotes competition and creativity of design in housing, development and advertising and recognizes outstanding sales efforts among real estate agents. Submissions are made online through the association’s website at www.bialouisville.com/smcawards, beginning November 1, 2015.

To submit an entry for any category, companies must be in good standing with BIA. For anyone entering in the Personal Achievement Awards category, he/she must be a member of the SMC. All categories must pertain to the seven-county Louisville metropolitan statistical areas and have been built or marketed between November 1, 2014 - October 31, 2015.

Complete entries, including portfolio, entry material requirements and entry fees, must be received no later than 12 noon, Wednesday, December 2, 2015. Entries submitted between November 1 and November 14 receive an early bird price of $35. Entries received after November 14 are $50.

The Bullitt County Council was held on September 23, 2015 at Tuscany Italian Restaurant in Mt. Washington. The luncheon centered around the announcement of the 2016 Homearama featuring 2 sites - Norton Commons in East Louisville and River Crest in Bullitt County / Mt. Washington. Currently, 8 builders plan to build 9 homes in the unique Central Park section of River Crest.

The event speakers included River Crest development representatives Richard Miles and Joe Bradshaw, along with Gail Schell, BIA Vice President of Events and Operations and Homearama organizer. Miles and Bradshaw spoke about the overall plan for River Crest, unveiling the amenities of Central Park, including walking trails and an expansive playground area. Each Homearama lot will face Central Park and will back up to a rugged wooded area. Schell spoke about the excitement and buzz the 2016 Homearama has already received.

Attendees of the event included Homearama builders, various BIA associate members, Representative Webber, Judge Executive Roberts and Mayor Armstrong.

On September 10th Sales and Marketing Council (SMC) held their quarterly breakfast featuring guest speaker Superintendent Dr. Donna Hargens with Jefferson County Public Schools ( JCPS). Dr. Hargens spoke to the group about how JCPS approaches career & technical education (formally referred to as vocational education) at 15 high schools within the district. JCPS offers the following themes at 3 different high schools across the district: Business and Information IT, Communication, Media and Arts, Engineering (aeronautics, engineering, construction and manufacturing), Human Services, Education and International Study and Medicine, Health and the Environment.

Iroquois High School, along with Jeffersontown and Shawnee High Schools, offers the engineering theme, with several construction trades focuses available. Dr. Hargens was accompanied by current student Akela Chaires, Carpentry Instructor Steve Anderson and Program Specialist Terry Miller. Akela, a junior at Iroquois High School, spoke about her experience in the carpentry program she participated in since her freshman year. “This program helps improve your knowledge in many different areas”, Akela stated. She continued to detail how the carpentry program helped her in the areas of math, reading and critical thinking. The BIA leadership continues to have an open dialogue with JCPS about the importance of construction trades in the area high schools.

corner Fantasy Membership League Kentucky Construction Career Days

The Kentucky Construction Career Choice Council (K4C) hosted the 11th annual Kentucky Construction Career Days on September 29th and 30th at the Shelby County Fair Grounds. Over 2,000 high school students came from across the Commonwealth to participate in the event. Each year the K4C puts on the event to make students aware of the various careers available within the construction industry.

As students entered the first of 3 barns, each received a hard hat and safety glasses. Students were able to explore today’s construction trades in a fun, hands-on environment. There were over 71 exhibitor booths for students to visit. The Kentucky Construction Career Choice Council sponsors this event with support from Home Builders Association of Kentucky.

Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville wrapped up the second season of the Fantasy Membership League for 2015 in September! BIA Teams brought in a total of 151 New Memberships during the drive, is a combination of Associates, Builders & Affiliates. John Miranda’s team won both seasons of 2015. A big shout out to this team who brought in 78 of the Memberships themselves.

Also keep in mind any member who has recruited new Members for 2015, your name will go in a drawing for prizes at the November 2nd General Membership Meeting. Your name will go in as many times as the number of new members you have brought in this year! We will have several cash drawings on this night for Spike Members.

As always, thank you to all Spike Members who recruit not only for BIA locally but for the industry as a whole. It takes all of us and all of our voices to keep our industry strong and housing affordable. Thank you again from all of us at BIA.

BICF Call for Fundraisers

The Building Industry Charitable Foundation (BICF) will be hosting a fundraising drive November 5th from 11-1, and you’re invited to participate! Under the leadership of Registered Remodeler Brandon Bailey, Bailey Remodeling & Construction, LLC, BICF will be banding together to expand their influence, utilizing five call teams to make fundraising calls in November.

Expect a call – and prepare to donate! The five team captains are: PJ Moore, Teresa Morgan, Paul Miele, Jon Steimel and Jeremy Esposito.
