About the Registered Remodelor’s Council This year we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Tour of Remodeled Homes in Louisville. Each year the showcase has grown in popularity. The diversity in projects and the neighborhoods, in which the homes reside this year, help to showcase the talents of our Registered Remodelors and the potential for existing homes across Louisville. The remodeling industry in Louisville has continued to thrive, evident by the number of homes on display this weekend, at 22 projects. 4 The Tour of Remodeled Homes
When you choose to remodel your home you want to ensure that you’re hiring a professional. In 1976 the Home Builders Association of Louisville (HBAL) founded the Remodelor’s Council in order to strengthen the awareness of professional remodelers and to raise the image of the profession as a whole. As Registered Remodelors must meet stringent requirements that set them apart from the average remodeler, clients can take heart in knowing that when they hire a Registered Remodelor they are working with a professional that is striving to be better than the rest. It is important for you to make sure that the person you entrust the safety, image, and security of your home is someone you can trust. For more information about the Remodelor’s Council or for a list of Registered Remodelors highlighting their areas of expertise, call 502.429.6000 or visit our web site at www.hbal.com.

Cherry cabinets in a Ginger Snap finish with a Potter’s Mill door style were paired with Madura Gold granite countertops for the kitchen’s perimeter. Hints of terra cotta, gold and cream in the ceramic tile coordinate with the colors in the countertop. A White Chocolate painted finish was selected for the work island cabinetry that has a solid walnut countertop. Part of the former kitchen was reconfigured as a desk and hutch area. Although the house is a traditional Cape Cod, the clients envisioned a more transitional design for their larger renovated kitchen. Kruse Allison Construction’s first challenge was to move a load bearing beam into the house in order to open up a wall between the kitchen and bedroom. The removal of this wall has enlarged the kitchen from approximately 120 sq. ft. to 300 sq. ft. which gives the homeowner the much needed space they desired. Southern Kitchens designed the kitchen to incorporate an abundance of storage and a layout that would support the homeowner’s culinary avocation. Among the storage amenities are pull out wicker baskets and a bread drawer in the island. Appliances include a GE Monogram gas cooktop, GE oven, an Advan-

The clapboard siding was installed in the mid 1860’s. The building has been painted 7 times since 1985. We opted to use the CHIC Liquid Vinyl system from Kentucky Custom Coatings after watching a video featuring their product. Kentucky Custom Coatings did a complete prep of the building, then applied the liquid vinyl system. We are completely satisfied with the system and the product. The total redesign and expansion of this contemporary ranch home’s kitchen began with the complete demolition of the existing kitchen and hallway. Relocating a wall allowed the kitchen to be considerably enlarged after the load bearing locations were resupported. The ceiling, cabinets, appliances and floor were removed, and new drywall was installed. A new Velux skylight was installed in the ceiling, reducing energy costs and saturating the kitchen with sunlight. Custom cabinets with granite coun-

Todd Stengel Construction worked with the clients in 2002 to build a carriage/pool house and custom fence. The company was called back to renovate the first and second floors, including a new kitchen. The renovation also encompassed hardwood floors. The 22’ tall atrium with windows was designed to allow light into the three story stairwell and the totally renovated kitchen. The addition was designed to improve the aesthetics of the back of the

Working with architect Tim Winters, Landis Homes had to get approval from the Historic Landmarks and Preservation Districts Commission to remodel this Tudor style home near Cherokee Park, one of the first houses ever built on Cherokee Parkway. Winters’ design opened up the floor plan to facilitate a better traffic flow throughout the house. The new design and décor of the addition and renovated areas is replete with many details such as crown molding on the 10’ ceilings, and wider trim and baseboard to match the existing trim in the home. Landis Homes opened up the back wall of the house to add a cased Tudor arched opening with recessed panels between the breakfast room and kitchen. To-the-ceiling glazed white cabinets with crown molding and a white marble countertop imbue the kitchen with refreshed style. The upper cabinets have glass doors and interior light-

Preserving the integrity of the three story Victorian home, innovatively utilizing salvaged material, and increasing energy efficiency were paramount to this remodel project. Having no access to the backyard and the desire not to jeopardize trees on the property presented other challenges, requiring the foundation to be dug by hand and all material carried in and out. Kiel Thomson Company recycled as much trim as possible from the house and supplemented it with recycled trim they purchased. The addition’s stucco exterior was chosen to match the existing house. New Marvin metal clad exterior windows and doors complement the design. White walls and trim combined with dark oak flooring give the space a rich and crisp feel. Designed for privacy, the screened porch conveniently opens up to the rear yard. A sitting area, large dining table and chandelier beautifully enrich the dĂŠcor. The third floor bathroom was renovated to allow for a custom stainless steel shower, double vanity and large closet.

Promaster remodeled the interior and exterior of this 100 year old Crescent Hill home to enable the kitchen and living area to open to a comfortable new screened porch and deck. Architect Jeff Rawlins’ design allowed for the modernization of the house and for the homeowners to express their own style and taste. A highly dramatic two story wall of commercial glass on the entire back of the house reveals the master bedroom on the second floor and the family room on the first floor. Promaster transformed a former bedroom into a master bath, closet and laundry room, and renovated the area that is now the new master bedroom. The wall between the galley style kitchen and dining room was removed to provide a more ex-

Insuramax Contractors converted a screened deck on the back of the house into a climate controlled four season billiards/recreation room that has a slate tile floor, and new doors and windows. French doors open off the billiards room to the back yard. On the second floor, a full bathroom was updated with painted wood cabinets with inset doors, a ceramic tile floor, stall shower, double vanity, and a soaking tub under mounted in a granite tub deck that’s distinguished by a paneled wainscoting like that on the walls. To increase the home’s insulation, cellulose was blown into the walls and attic, and the crawl space was sealed and conditioned. The house’s driveway

This energy efficient one-story addition was designed as a self contained “mother-in-law suite” with a sitting area, bedroom and kitchenette. The studio-like space, featuring maple floors, a bathroom with a tub and shower, and a large walkin closet complete with a stack washer and dryer hookup, could be a future first floor master suite. The new space’s interior and exterior were designed to coordinate with the existing trim and cornice work of the three-story 19th century Victorian home. In a separate area of the home, the living room’s existing fireplace wood mantel was modified and a beaded ceiling and track lighting were added to imbue the room with character.

combination of recessed and under cabinet lighting. A pantry large enough to accommodate a refrigerator increased the kitchen’s visual appeal and functionality. The look of the powder room came to life with the homeowner’s idea of converting an old table to a vanity, a feature that was embellished by a hammered brass sink. A chair rail, wainscoting and sconce lighting enhanced the personality of the room. A “mini split” all electric heating and air conditioning system was put in the sunroom. Windows reused from a former space saved a considerable amount of money and seamlessly blend with the design of the room. The windows, a double door and four skylights in the vaulted ceiling allow a profusion of sunlight to enter the space. Although the light helps to beautifully define the room, it

Corcoran Homebuilding & Remodeling’s client had a significant wish list but a limited budget for renovating this 50 year old ranch. The company’s practicable and manageable solution was for the client to prioritize desired changes and to phase in the project over three years. Removing a wall to enlarge the foyer and make it more cohesive with the living room necessitated matching existing hardwood floors and rerouting heating and air conditioning. A porch was converted to a sunroom/den. By rearranging cabinets and installing tile throughout the entire space, the kitchen was integrated with the sunroom/den. Outdated style soffits were removed and the ceilings of the den and kitchen were merged, giving the perception of a larger area with higher ceilings. “We bought our house seven years ago, and seven years ago I started planning my kitchen remodel. The kitchen was functional, but so dated! I had six different kitchen designers and cabinet builders come to my house and listen to my ideas. Three of them actually measured everything, but not one ever got back to me with any type of workable design. I was just about to give up when I found Southern Kitchens. They listened to all of my ideas (as well as those of my three daughters’) and were able to create the kitchen of our dreams. They were so patient and accommodating. Even though nothing we wanted was “standard”, they never seemed to be intimidated and worked tirelessly to suit all of our needs. I truly only have positive things to say about my beautiful new cabinetry and the experience with Southern Kitchens. They really made remodeling a pleasure!” - Sue Greenwell, Elizabethtown, KY My wife and I are extremely satisfied with the professional service, attentiveness to detail, costs, and installation provided by Southern Kitchens. Our new kitchen cabinets, countertops, and matching living room builtin-cabinets turned out better than anticipated and is now the showplace of our home. Southern Kitchens was a joy to deal with both personally and professionally. My wife and I will certainly call Southern Kitchens in the future and have highly recommended them to family and friends. Thank you.” - Mike Comstock, Louisville, KY

“Southern Kitchens did a spectacular job designing and installing our kitchen and bath cabinetry for our new home! Their years of experience and knowledge of products were extremely valuable and were instrumental to the success of the end product. The installers were very professional and did a particularly great job with all the trim. The icing on the cake is that our kitchen was awarded “Best Kitchen” in the Southern Indiana Parade of Homes! My husband and I could not be happier and we look forward to enjoying our beautiful, functional kitchen for years to come. My husband and I highly recommend Southern Kitchens for any new home or remodeling project.” - Sara & Rich Morris Salem, IN When Susan and I decided to redo the kitchen we did not know where to go. We had been to several places but never felt “comfortable” with the people we were talking to. We had heard about Southern Kitchens but didn’t know what a pleasant experience we were in for. After talking to you, Susan and I came home and discussed the options. We decided to go with you, and that was one of the best moves we ever made. Your designs and cabinets were beyond our expectations. From the delivery people to the installers, all were courteous, knowledgeable, and very personable. We have highly recommended Southern Kitchens to friends and family; many thanks to you and your professional team at Southern Kitchens.” - John & Susan Schmied Louisville, KY

Bailey Remodeling & Construction transformed this home’s cramped bathroom, with outdated yellow tile and toilet, and two small closets in the adjacent bedroom, into the dream bathroom and walk-in closet the homeowner envisioned. Like everyone, the homeowner wanted the new space to be functional, but more than that, it needed to be a comfortable space, designed for relaxation and retreat – the perfect place to start or end the day. In order to achieve the look you will see on the tour, Bailey Remodeling had to work with the homeowner to think creatively about how to achieve the desired outcome; ultimately, they decided to expand the bathroom by identifying unused space in the pre-existing kitchen and undersized closets. With the space re-defined, it was time to move on to creating the “spa-like” feel the homeowner was looking for. Bailey utilized Porter Paint’s Sand

Steve Shackelford and owner/architect Ray Berry worked together to completely renovate this 2-story Norbourne Estates home. Ray’s wife and interior designer Lori Busa lead the transformation of the interiors. This was achieved by completely removing the existing family room addition and adding 900 square feet of new construction. The new expansive kitchen and breakfast area flow into a sunken family room where the eye is drawn to a stunning fireplace focal point. the large family room was designed to include a children’s area for homework and games. A 48” LCD television with built-in high definition tuner and Blue Ray makes it the perfect gathering room for the entire family. A laundry room with a bench and locker was also added at the rear of the home. The first floor bathroom was fully updated with cherry stained maple cabinetry, granite countertop, ceramic tile floor, an under mount sink, and satin finish faucet fixtures. A high efficiency zoned heating system on the second floor was integrated into the home’s HVAC system. Brick was removed from the house when the ffe garage was added; it was cleaned, then reapplied cli hy on the front elevation of the new two car garage.
Extensive concrete work encompassed a driveway, basketball goal and patio. The remodeling project also included applying foam insulation against the exterior of the house, fiberglass insulation upstairs; and adding new shingles, gutters and HardiePlank siding.

More than 1400 sq. ft. were added to this St. Matthews home. Three of the main elements of the remodeling project were the additions of a master bedroom, bathroom and family room. The roomy new master bedroom, featuring two dormers, was created from space above the garage which was part of the additions. The area that previously served as the master bedroom is now a master bathroom with his and her closets. The two vanities have a warm wenge finish, giving the room a soft, slightly contemporary feel while maintaining true to the traditional style of the home. The diagonal ceramic tile, along with the glass tile inlays in the shower, and the mosaic tile inlays within ceramic tile on the floor provide singular personality to the room. is located off the new first floor guest bedroom. The original laundry room was converted to a mud room with built in lockers and a dog shower. On the second floor, a guest bedroom was remodeled and the guest bath was updated with a travertine floor and walls, and laundry facilities. Two other upstairs bedrooms also received a makeover, and the Jack and Jill bathroom was renewed with marble floors and tile work around the vanity. A fireplace flanked by bookcases is the center of attention in the renovated master bedroom. One of the bookcases conceals the access to the private laundry room. The luxuriant master bath has 16 linear feet of cabinets and vanities, a sitting area and a walk in closet. A built in fireplace, claw foot tub, and Carrera marble floors and shower heighten the aesthetic appeal of the space.

Extensive renovations of this 6,500 sq. ft. two story traditional home were sumptuously executed. Floor to ceiling wainscoting in the entry, and 6’ tall wainscoting with bookcases individualized by glass shelves and accent lighting in the study set the scene for definitive style on the first floor. A coffered ceiling adds textural and visual interest to the billiards room which is also notable for a new fireplace surrounded by bookcases. The hearth room, guest bedroom and full bath were added to the house. A tray ceiling and a natural blue stone fireplace and bookcases accentuate the hearth room. The adjoining kitchen was renovated with new cabinetry, a large island, banquette seating, tile work and state of the art appliances. Quartzite flooring and walls give a spa like feel to the full bath, complete with washer and dryer, that

A wall that enclosed the laundry area was removed and was replaced with cabinets and a second sink, converting the space into a drink station. The pantry and coat closet were redesigned as a laundry room and pantry. The family room hearth was changed, greatly improving the aesthetics of the room. The fireplace surround was painted white, the mantel was replaced, and bookcases were added. The exterior was enhanced by replacing the driveway.

Removing a wall between the kitchen and family room in this traditional ranch home allowed for the complete redesign of both rooms, ultimately creating a large, open environment ideal for the family’s busy life and entertaining. An accent lighted tray ceiling, built into part of the former attic space, and new oak hardwood floors span the combined kitchen/family room and contribute to the increased openness of the renovated area. An enjoyable gathering spot in the home, the kitchen accommodates good traffic flow. An island with a seating area is the center of attention. Beautiful custom white cabinets, some with beveled glass doors are paired with Hi Max white countertops, and are clean and crisp against apple

Full overlay custom built cabinets are distinctive for their white ash burl door panels and cherry veneer frames. Nickel pulls and bright white Avonite Foundations solid surface countertops with a double sink vanity and vessel bowls set off the unique cabinets. The room’s travertine floor and shower walls are juxtaposed with the shower’s black porcelain floor. A Velux tubular skylight makes a dramatic design statement and infuses the bathroom with natural sunlight.

The homeowner’s visits to luxury hotels in Tokyo and New York inspired the features of this master bath that reflects contemporary design. To meet the objective of creating a larger shower in the master bathroom of the ranch home, the whirlpool tub was removed. The shower was relocated from its original location, allowing for a larger shower. Multiple shower heads and body sprays create a spa-like experience. Two shampoo alcoves are recessed into the shower walls. The space’s redesign allowed the construction of a dividing wall and pocket door between the main bathroom and toilet area.

Peterson’s customer wanted a new sunroom that would allow year-round enjoyment and provide views of a beautifully landscaped backyard, with minimal impact to the property. It was important to preserve an existing patio and blend the new construction with this 1980’s walkout ranch. The homeowners also wanted to update the existing, adjacent family room with new paint, carpeting, and ceramic tile in the bar area. The new addition’s cultured stone veneer and cedar siding complement the home’s existing natural stone and cedar treatments. A large deck was replaced with this light-filled sunroom and a

Designing a room that exquisitely reflected the design of the house was critical to Promaster Contracting’s addition of a screened porch off the family room of this two story home. Characterized by brick with archways and carriage style doors on the lower section and custom screen panels with large columns on the upper section, the 350 sq. ft. porch also has a specially created stained glass window that is integrated into the upper portion of the vaulted ceiling. Two windows that flanked the fireplace inside the house were removed and refashioned as doors that open onto the screened porch.
