Spring Parade of Homes Committee Chairman Justin Pfeifer
Spring Parade of Homes Awards Celebration HBA members and friends gathered at the View at Briarcliff on May 1 as home builders were presented with the 2019 American Dream Awards at the Spring Awards Celebration. Each spring, local home builders compete for top honors in the awards competition held in conjunction with the Spring Parade of Homes. The Parade provides consumers the opportunity to visit more than 400 new homes throughout metropolitan Kansas City during the 16-day, three-weekend event that opened April 27 and continues through May 13. The American Dream Awards are the premier honor for new home construction in the Greater Kansas City region. Builders’ entries were rigorously judged on architectural design, construction techniques, craftsmanship and selection of materials. Homes competed in categories based on price range and were judged by teams made up of industry professionals from across the Midwest. Photos on pages 8 & 9

Greg Prieb Named to Ingram’s 40 Under 40 List HBA member Greg Prieb, president of Prieb Homes, has been named to Ingram’s 2019 list of 40 Under 40. Ingram’s 40 Under 40 list highlights Kansas Citians who reflect the highest levels of ethics and integrity. These people have shown a commitment to entrepreneurial thinking and a clear record of achievement in business and have attained executive-level managerial status and demonstrated strong leadership skills. “Last year, Prieb had $70 million in sales,” the Ingram’s article states. “He says the key to success is to carefully study the market’s absorption and pay careful attention to asking-price points in specific areas.” According to the article, what Prieb likes the most about the job “is taking part in creating communities, and later driving through them, seeing vibrant areas where families pull out their lawn chairs on the weekend to socialize and children play in the neighborhood. He enjoys facilitating that process with future homeowners.” Congratulations, Greg!

HBA Joins MO Governor Parson’s Workforce Roundtable The Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City participated in the Governor’s Roundtable on April 24 at the Word Trade Center at Union Station. The conversation focused on Missouri Governor Mike Parson’s Workforce Development Initiative highlighting programs such as the FastTrack Workforce Incentive Grant and Missouri One Start as well as obtaining input from industry stakeholders in Kansas City. As currently proposed, the Fast Track Program would provide funding to those who are 25 and older, make $40,000 or less as
an individual or $80,000 or less as a family unit, and are looking to obtain training in high demand careers. Missouri One Start, a customized training approach, will provide services to employers such as pre-employment screening, employment marketing and recruiting, and job specific training. Thank you to Governor Parson who allowed KCHBA to provide input about the future of our workforce as he works to align the requirements of business, education and government in Missouri.

First Quarter Permit Activity Keeps Pace with Q1 2018 Residential permit growth for the first quarter of 2019 has maintained a pace similar to the first quarter of 2018, according to the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City’s (HBA) monthly Residential Building Permit Statistics report. The 1,415 units permitted through March 2019 is similar to the level of activity in 2018’s first quarter, which was 1,453. Instead of single-family permitting leading the growth however, this year’s first quarter permitting was more evenly split with 809 single-family permits and 846 multi-family permits issued. Overland Park, Kan., has recorded the highest number of permits so far in 2019 with 147 permits pulled. Rounding out the top five are Blue Springs with 53; Lee’s Summit with 43 permits; Olathe with 39; and Grain Valley with 31. “A healthy housing industry means more jobs and a stronger economy,” said Will Ruder, HBA Executive Vice President. “Building homes enhances the property tax base that sustains our local schools and first responders, among other services. With 403 new homes on the Spring Parade of Homes across the metro, residential construction is clearly an important industry to the entire region.”
