Continue Supporting Mental Health Awareness

To lower the rate of death by suicide in our industry, the work must continue year-round. Here are some resources you can use to plan activities between now and next year’s week:

• Share the webinar replays. The CSPW webinars focused on specific actions companies can take.

• Distribute items with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Orders for those items will remain open throughout the year.

• Conduct mental health Toolbox Talks regularly. Ours are available at no cost in English and in Spanish.

• Invite a speaker to your jobsite or workplace using our Speaker Sourcing Guide.

• Plan a stand-down for Mental Health Awareness month in May. We’ve created a sample agenda for you to customize.

• Keep Construction Suicide Prevention Week in mind when creating your 2025 budget. We rely on the generosity of our sponsors to fund this initiative and the free resources we provide, so keep us in mind for 2025, and thank you to all our 2024 sponsors!

Mark the dates on your calendar now for Construction Suicide Prevention Week 2025, taking place Sept. 8-12.

KCHBA Celebrates PWB Week, Sept. 9-13

Women continue to make significant strides in the residential construction field. This includes positively impacting the growth of the labor workforce. In fact, the number of women employed in the industry hit 1.287 million in 2023.

NAHB honors these skilled workers by celebrating Professional Women in Building (PWB) Week. Long gone are the days when women worked exclusively in the office. Today, they’re builders, carpenters and remodelers — proving women are as effective on the job site as their male counterparts.

KCPWB members hosted a meeting of the members education event on Sept. 11 with guest speaker Barb Allen. Allen focused on Awakening Unconscious Bias. “Difficult” is just ONE of the labels successful women in construction related fields receive due to Unconscious Biases. • What are the others?

KCHBA Featured in NAHB’s State Affairs Newsletter

NAHB rerecently highlighted KCHBA’s KCMO efforts and other accomplishments in its nationwide State Affairs newsletter. A few of the questions NAHB asked included “What are you working on now that you think other HBAs should prepare for?” and “What is one piece of advice you’d like to share with your fellow state and local associations?”

We appreciate NAHB recognizing our efforts to adhere to our mission of homeownership for all.

KCHBA Stops Publishing Building Business News

It’s the end of an era

For more than 50 years, Building Business News (formerly known as Bits for Builders and The Home Builders Journal and Builder Business News) has kept KCHBA members informed on the latest industry developments, technological advancements and events hosted by the KCHBA.

As technology has evolved and people spend more time watching videos on their phones and less time sitting and reading long form articles, KCHBA made the decision to stop publishing the monthly magazine and move toward more online content.

There won’t be any more feature articles, but member news, anniversaries and new members will still be highlighted on the KCHBA’s social media platforms. Similarly, look for more video content, such as Will’s 1 Minute, to keep you informed of KCHBA resources and information relevant to the membership.

In saying goodbye to BBN, let’s take a look back at BBN through the decades.

1980s

The Home Show in the 1980s typically included more than 300 exhibitors and average attendance around 125,000, according to the February 1985 issue of Bits for Builders. In the 80s, the KCHBA also hosted a model homes contest at the Home Show.

In 1985, the KCBHA hosted the third annual SAVE Tour, which featured energy efficient homes built to meet energy guidelines established by Kansas City Power and Light. At least 62 homes participated in the tour, according to the February issue of Bits for Builders.

In October 1980, Bits for Builders reported the top category in the Parade of Homes was “over $150,000” and there were 188 entries. By 1983, the top category was “over $180,000” and there were 207 entries.

1990s

In 1990, The Home Builders Journal warned builders that although KC had yet to feel the repercussions of the savings and loan and banking crises that was currently hitting the rest of the nation, trouble lay ahead and builders should make some adjustments to their business practices in order to stay afloat.

Also, during this time, the industry was seeing a trend of average household size declining to 2.6 persons. The magazine reported the average cost of new homes constructed in Kansas was $106,300 and $92,200 on average in Missouri. In its January 1990 issue, The Home Builders Journal reported the average square footage of new homes in Missouri was 1,691, slightly larger than Kansas where the average square foot was 1,646. The average cost per square foot for homes in Kansas was $58.12; Missouri’s average was $49.06.

2000s

In the early 2000s, the Parade of Homes smashed records with an average of 600 homes entered into parades, according to the January 2003 issue of Builder Business News. The issue also noted that Kansas City was listed as #22 in the Builder 100 list of top home-building markets in the nation, based on metropolitan statistical areas and the number of permits issued in 2002.

Did you know in 2003 the Kansas Council of the KCHBA volunteered services and products to a house for the Kaw Valley Habitat for Humanity — just in time for a mother and her five children to celebrate Thanksgiving?

Sam Crawford of Crawford & Kinder Inc. was project coordinator and said “the project was not only a good opportunity for the Kansas Council, but also on a personal level.”

2010s

By 2011, the monthly magazine had transitioned to more of a tabloid-sized newspaper with the name Building Business News. That May, BBN reported on a legislative victory regarding fire sprinklers remaining a consumer choice. Kansas Governor Brownback and Missouri Governor Jay Nixon both signed into law HBA-based legislation preempting local governments from adopting a mandatory fire sprinkler provision in their building codes or ordinances.

In October 2013, Building Business News reported the fall parade featured the highest number of entries since 2008 with 269 homes by 78 builders.

While BBN is going away, it will not be gone. The KCHBA has an archive of every issue of BBN – and all its other names – from the beginning. Any KCHBA member who would like to browse back issues is welcome to do so. KCHBA staff just asks that you do not take issues outside of the building, but you’re welcome to make copies or scan pages if you like.

Fall Parade of Homes Showcased 250+ Homes

The Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City (KCHBA) is proud to announce the Fall Parade of Homes, presented by Mike Bryant Heating & Cooling, returned Sept. 21-Oct. 6 to showcase more than 250 homes built by 93 builder members of the KCHBA.

View some of the latest trends in home construction and design including arched doorways and built-ins, the latest color palettes and unique details that complement the style of home whether it is modern, transitional or something else.

With that many homes, there is a variety of sizes, floor plans and prices to meet different needs and budgets. Homes range in price from $250,000 to more than $5 million. Admission is free and free parade guides are still available for pickup at the KCHBA (I-435 & Holmes).

You can also download the user-friendly mobile app from the Google Play or Apple Store. Using the app, parade-goers can save their favorites and then map a customized route to each home. For more information, please visit KCParadeofHomes.com.
