HBA Recognizes Outstanding Leadership at Inaugural Celebration
The Awards
Builders Hall of Fame
In 1972 the HBA established the George W. Byers Memorial Award to pay tribute to builders providing distinguished service to the homebuilding industry. In 1993 the honor was renamed the Builder Hall of Fame Award in recognition of the lifetime of contributions that the recipients have contributed to our association, our industry and our community.
Fred J. Geier Associate of the Year
The Associate of the Year has been a proud tradition for years and last year a new tradition began by naming it the Fred J. Geier Associate of the Year. Fred was honored three times as Associate of the Year and was a man of true character who will be remembered by the many lives he touched.
Bob Bollier Award
The Award: For the past decade, the HBA Sales and Marketing Council has paid tribute to the late Bob Bollier with an award presented in his honor. Bob was a man who was beloved by so many for his generous spirit and undeniable dedication to his friends within the HBA and the council. Building Business News

By 2001 Jim knew it was time start his own company and founded Advantage Framing with the goal to treat framing not only an important building technique, but a professional business that builders would appreciate. Jim says he has Fred Geier to thank for getting him involved with the HBA when Fred recruited him for the associates’ council. Over time, Jim has volunteered on a variety of committees, served on the board of directors, and has taken a special interest in the Build Green initiatives and the Build Green Council. He says he was “green” before “green” was cool. “Homes are a system, and a lot of people don’t realize that one change can affect the efficiency of an entire house,” said Jim, “At Advantage Framing, we have the capability to generate a computer model of a home and solve problems before building even begins.” The HBA is fortunate to recognize such a dedicated volunteer and visionary for home building in Kansas City.
mediator for the Kansas City Regional Association of Realtors. Ken became involved with the HBA thanks to Tracy Poe who encouraged him to be involved with the Sales & Marketing Council. He expressed sincere appreciation to the builders with whom he has worked with over the years. In addition, he recalls fondly being in the first Certified Sales Professional class
Bob Bollier Award: Ken Rosberg, Cedar Creek Development Company Ken Rosberg followed his bother Tom into the real estate business in 1979 starting his career with Jay’s Realtors. His first experience in new home sales came in the late 80’s, marketing a quaint sub-division named Cambridge Court. In 1992, Ken’ career was in for a big change when he was hired as a new homes sales associate for the Cedar Creek Development, the master planned community located western Johnson County. With 20 years of service in the community, Ken has appropriately earned the nick-name of Mr. Cedar Creek. Welcome 2012 President: Kevin Stucker The HBA Inaugural Celebration welcomed new Board President, Kevin Stucker, as the HBA’s 67th President. “The housing industry has shaped who I am,” said Stucker. “Though housing has experienced some rough times recently, it’s been gratifying to be a part of the industry for most of my life and I look forward to the future.” Kevin started in the industry when he was sixteen years old when he says he was ready for his first construction job. He went to work with a family member’s business, Stucker Construction, Inc., and began to learn all aspects of the business. It was after graduating from Truman State University with degrees in business and economics that Kevin began to engage more in the industry through the HBA. Stucker Construction had entries on the Parade of Homes which lead to his involvement in the Missouri South Council, the Tour Committee, Build PAC, the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee.
Page 4
In 2010, the timing was right for Kevin to branch out on his own so he founded K Stucker Enterprises with the goal of adapting to the changing housing industry. “I’ve always had a passion for the industry and regardless of where I am I will always stay involved,” said Stucker. As he looks toward the upcoming year, he starts by reflecting back on recent association accomplishments. “We have made great strides and improvements through re-tooling and reorganization,” said Stucker. “We’ve had to stay adept for this economy and I’m pleased to say the HBA is financially stable and we plan to keep it that way.” In addition, Stucker will focus on consumer awareness. “Consumers need to know we are experts in the housing industry so they turn to the HBA and its members for information and answers,” said Stucker. “I hope throughout my presidency, we will able to bolster ourselves as being The Voice of the Housing Industry.”

Governor Brownback Breaks Ground on Energy Efficient Home Kansas Governor Sam Brownback joined area city and county officials, the Builders Development Corporation and the HBA, recently to break ground for a new, highly energyefficient home on a currently vacant lot at 704 W Dennis Street, Olathe, KS. The house is designed to receive Energy Star certification and will feature ground-source “geothermal” heating/cooling, energy-efficient appli-ances and windows. The BDC is a not-for-profit community development corporation working towards rebuilding communities in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area. It recently received a U.S. Housing and Urban Development Best Practice Award for its commitment to energyefficient and affordable homes. Governor Brownback said, “The state of Kansas is a proud partner with the city of Olathe, Johnson county and the BDC and looks forward to many more high quality, energy efficient homes in the future. Putting builders and subcontractors to work is one of the many benefits of this public-private partnership.” For more information about the program, contact Michael Snodgrass, Builders Development Corporation at msnodgrass@bdc-kc.org.

Public Comment Period for ANSI Square Footage Standard Opens As an ANSI Accredited Standards Development Organization, the NAHB Research Center is issuing notice for public comment on the reaffirmation of the American National Standard for Single-Family Residential Buildings, Square Footage – Method of Calculating, ANSI Z765-2003. The public comment period commences October 17th and will end December 5th. This standard, which provides methodologies to determine and report square footage (area) measurements for attached and detached single-family houses, was originally developed by the NAHB Research Center in 1996 and has been in use continuously since then. As an ANSI-approved standard, ANSI Z765-2003 is subject to periodic updates as a way to ensure that advances in building codes, technology, and other developments can be considered for incorporation. A Consensus Committee was selected earlier this year and met twice via teleconference to discuss the existing standard. Upon review and discussion, Building Business News
the Consensus Committee decided that no substantive changes were required and proposed to reaffirm the existing document. However, any individual, organization, or member of the Consensus Committee may now submit a comment to be considered during the 45-day public comment period. Sections 1 through 4 of the standard are eligible for public review and comment. Other parts of the document, including the Foreword and Annex, are not subject to public review. Complete instructions on filing comments are available online. A list of the Consensus Committee members, meeting agendas and minutes, and a link to purchase a copy of the standard are also available on the same webpage. For additional information and all future updates on the 2012 standard review and update process, visit www.nahbrc.com/ sqft2012. Any questions regarding the public comment period or any part of the standards development process should be directed to standards@nahbrc.com, or you can contact Tom Kenney (301-4306246) at the NAHB Research Center.

BOCC Chairman Eilert Addresses HBA Members (Continued from page 1) five year plan to balance the budget. Expenditures were reduced by $11.7 million. While there were no layoffs, about 145 vacant full time employee positions were eliminated. Property and sales tax revenues have stopped going down and are flattening. The mill levy has generally been around 23 and a quarter, including the library and parks mills. During the housing boom, the county collected $20 million a year in mortgage registration fees. That income has fallen to $11-12 million a year with the housing market slowdown. Appraisals for office space are up and multifamily is as well, albeit slightly. Residential appraisals remain soft and retail appraisals are down. Residents are able to access the budget online at http://countybudget.jocogov.org. Eilert touted economic activity in the county, including the Johnson County Education Research Triangle. In 2008

voters approved a 1/8 cent sales tax to support new facilities and programs in Johnson County in partnership with K-State University, KU Edwards campus, and the KU Medical Center. The sales tax generates approximately $14 million yearly. “There are no other programs like it in the country,” said Eilert. “It will provide good jobs – and a lot of them.” The National Food and Animal Health Institute at K-State’s Innovation campus in Olathe opened in April. Abaxis, Inc. has opened its first laboratory testing facility near the Olathe site to provide veterinary services for animal health and the firm anticipates 100 workers in three years. The campus also partnered with Ceva Santé Animale to provide two laboratories for three research scientists and to provide on-site training for college students. The North American corporate headquarters of Ceva are located in Lenexa.
