KCHBA Members Attend IBS as Leaders, Speakers and Award Winners

More than 200,000 housing and design professionals from across the globe flocked to Las Vegas for the 10th annual Design & Construction Week (DCW), the co-location of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) International Builders’ Show (IBS) and the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s (NKBA) Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS), and the three co-dated industry shows, the National Hardware Show (NHS), The International Surfaces Event (TISE) and the Las Vegas Winter Market. The five trade shows gave DCW attendees an opportunity to visit five industry trade events with just one badge.

This year’s show, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, boasted the highest attendance in DCW’s 10year history. DCW total attendance was comprised of nearly 70,000 IBS attendees and 40,000 KBIS attendees. DCW attendees visited more than 1,800 exhibitors showcasing the latest housing products across about one million net square feet of exhibit space. IBS exhibit space totaled more than 600,000 net square feet, where more than 1,300 exhibitors displayed the latest in building products and technology. In total, DCW drew nearly 110,000 attendees and nearly 2,000 exhibitors occupying more than one million square feet of indoor and outdoor exhibits.

IBS attendees could also take part in more than 100 education sessions led by experts on a wide range of industry topics.

KC’s Presence was Widespread

With about 300 KCHBA members at IBS, the association was well represented in Las Vegas. Cardinal Crest’s Joe Christensen served as a panelist in an education session called, “Don’t Make My Mistake: Builders Share Their Project Management Fails & Ways to Avoid Them.” You don’t get to the top of your game in construction without making a mistake or two, the speakers noted. Estimates and job costing goes wrong, change orders fail and teams experience communication breakdowns.

In this candid conversation, Joe and the other builder panelists shared the nitty-gritty of the lessons they’ve learned the hard way. Attendees walked away with actionable new strategies to ensure maximum profitability and productivity in all phases of the job.

You can listen to this recorded session and many others with your 2023 IBS registration. Head to buildersshow. com/Search/EducationEvents.aspx to view the full IBS Education Library.

Several members arrived in Las Vegas early for NAHB committee and subcommittee meetings. KCHBA had a strong presence with many members holding seats on NAHB committees and councils. (Note: if you sit on an NAHB committee and are not listed below, please let Kari@kchba.org know so we can add you next year).

KCHBA Leadership at NAHB:

• Single Family Builders Committee: Shawn Woods, Misty Hanson and Cole Griggs

• Design Committee: Justin Kerns and Brian Tebbenkamp

• Custom Home Builders Committee: Justin Kerns

• Land Development Committee: Shawn Woods

• Business Management & Information Technology Committee: Cole Griggs and Brian Tebbenkamp

Sluggish Start for 2023 Single-Family Permits

New home starts for the month of January fell to a level of 173 units, a 24 percent decline from December 2022’s total, according to statistics compiled by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City (KCHBA). The lower permit activity in January is consistent with the housing forecast presented earlier in January by the KCHBA, which indicated that new-home starts are low due to the Federal Reserve’s dramatic increase of interest rates, making

Kansas City, Mo., begins 2023 at the top of the list for highest-permitting cities with 29 single-family units. Overland Park ranked second with 24 units, followed by Olathe with 16 permits issued. Rounding out the top five are Belton with 13 permits and Liberty with 11 permits issued in January.
