Just recently, at the Champions Club, we had a very inspirational General Membership Meeting titled “Igniting our Industry.” During the evening, students and instructors from The Career Academy, SCC-Milford and the University of Nebraska were asked to give a short presentation about their programs, attendance and how they could use our help. It was exciting to listen to these talks as each one of them encouraged us to continue connecting with the youth. One of the talks came from a UNL professor, Stacy Spale. Stacy gave an inspirational testimony of how HBAL’s Interior & Residential Design Contest helped her realize her love for the Building Industry. Last month, the Young Building Professionals worked directly with youth from The Lighthouse to refinish their garden pergolas. I am so proud of the group for their exertions in giving back to the community and for introducing the youth to our industry. The Lighthouse after-school program offers middle and high school aged youth academic support, evening meals and enrichment/recreational activities during non-school hours. Currently, HBAL’s attention to promote the industry can also be seen with interaction within the Lincoln Public School System. Many thanks to the Careers in Construction Committee composed of Denny Van Horn, Taylor Ashburn, Dan Klein, Matt Kinning, Lori Wellman, Marlene Stroup, Pam Magner, Michaela Harrison and myself who are finishing the production on a couple informative videos. These videos feature our very own HBAL members who are sharing experiences from their career path. When completed, these videos will be used in actual classrooms around the city to build awareness of the Building Industry. During our last board meeting, we challenged ourselves to come up with new innovative ideas on how to include the youth in future HBAL events. The board discussed inviting the SCCMilford Construction students to join in the Clay Shoot. With the entry fee already covered for these students please consider inviting one or two of these students onto your team. HBAL understands today’s labor shortage challenges and would like to encourage you to collaborate with us. Please help us to continue looking for ideas to reach the youth and to not become weary in doing so, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest.

Behind the Scenes | Trivia Night: HBAL vs. REALTORS

Behind the Scenes at HBAL By Michaela Harrison, Executive Vice President The week of September 11 was “Membership Week” at HBAL. Igniting Our Industry was a very informative evening! We heard from The Career Academy, SCC-Milford, the Construction Management program and the Architecture College at UNL. All four presentations shared great information about each school and they all shared ways in which our members can become involved with their groups. If you’d like more information on how you can become involved with one of these groups please call the office. Thank you to all of our presenters and to Matt Kleinschmit for his vision for the evening! The next event of the week was our Membership Luncheon on September 14. We had almost 75 people join us for a free lunch. They had an opportunity to meet HBAL Board members and staff. Congrats to Mary Kinning for bringing in the most new members during lunch. She earned a helicopter ride for two! It’s not too late to submit your new members for a chance to win the membership drive, you have until November 9 to bring in your new members!

The Fall Parade of Homes starts this weekend. I hope you have time to view some of the homes on display. There are 38 homes in the Parade and the hours are 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. weekdays, 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Saturday and Sundays. The Sporting Clay Committee has been working hard in preparation for the October 13 shoot. We have over 24 teams registered to shoot. If you’d like to join us with a team or volunteer your time during the day contact Andrea with HBAL. I would like to thank the HBAL members who have already committed to being corporate sponsors for 2018. Platinum Partner, Lincoln Federal Savings Bank. Gold Partners, Black Hills Energy, Union Bank & Trust and Millard Lumber/Andersen Windows. Silver Partner, West Gate Bank. There is still ample time to sign up to be a 2018 Partner. Please contact me to find out how! October is typically the month HBAL works on our upcoming Membership Directory. To become more efficient with our time, we’ll be moving the publication date of our Directory to the second quarter of 2018. If you have questions please contact our office.

Young Building Professionals Council

Young Building Professionals Council Election of Officers The following is the Young Building Professionals Council ballot for 2018. If you would like to nominate anyone else to the ballot, please contact Andrea at 402-423-4225 or andrea@hbal.org by December 1.

Fall is officially here and as the year begins to wind down, I want to take a moment to reflect on everything we accomplished together this year. First and foremost, we formed an amazing new partnership with The Lighthouse which has been very fulfilling as we work to provide a positive influence in the kids' lives. Just last week Tyler Reynolds we were invited to be celebrity YBP President judges in their annual salsa tasting competition. This is a very neat event in which the kids, along with a mentor, break into teams and make salsa with ingredients they spent the summer helping to grow in the Lighthouse garden. We hosted our first 5K run this year and had a very successful Bean Bag Toss Tournament at the Hog Roast. Our Midday Meetups and Hard Hat Happy Hours continue to be a hit and provide an opportunity to make great connections with our members. We also had a great time getting to know some of our future colleagues who are currently Southeast Community College students at various events throughout the year. We are currently planning this year's holiday party where we will install our 2018 YBP officers. Stay tuned for details about this fun event. I am also very excited to see so many of our members showcasing their hard work during the upcoming Parade of Homes, October 1-8. Thank you to each and every one of you who has helped make this year such a success.

President Hayley Lane, Rezac Construction Vice President THIS COULD BE YOU!! Secretary Kelli Fleek, Bath & Kitchen Idea Center by Lincoln Winnelson

Note of Thanks I want to start by thanking you and your entire HBA office for what you've done for us and the Lincoln Community. I am extremely thankful for all the work that you completed for Lighthouse and having the kids involved. They had a fantastic time, they had other kids saying that they wish they were part of the events. We look forward to continuing our amazing partnership and doing other projects with you guys. Thank you and I hope you have an amazing week. Falah Al Hirez Lighthouse Volunteer Coordinator & Facility Manager

What I hope to get out of my membership: Looking to build good working relationships with local builders. We started building gigabit communities over a decade ago in Nebraska so we’re thrilled to be building fiber in the capital city of our home state. Lincoln has a rich history of blazing trails. The city’s pioneering spirit has led to exciting progress in recent years with the revitalization of the Haymarket, addition of the Pinnacle Bank Arena and the Railyard, plus an explosion of tech and software startups downtown. Bringing fiber and gigabit internet speed to this new silicon prairie was a no brainer.

We are the only full service geothermal drilling business in Nebraska. We offer drilling, service, design and consultation of all geothermal systems. We have developed and patented a less invasive process of drilling and installing geothermal loop fields specially designed for replacement applications in existing homes. This process allows us to work around existing trees and landscaping without destroying the entire yard. It is “the less mess alternative to geothermal.”
