ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE LICENSURE
EDU C251
At the Center for Teaching Excellence, we have been working to define a sequence of courses in which licensed teachers can enroll in order to add ESL endorsements. This initiative is important to because Virginia schools are experiencing tremendous growth in the numbers of students who are not native speakers of English. Federal and state laws require that this population of students receive services to address language deficits. The federal No Child Left Behind Act also identifies this subpopulation of students as a special class that is monitored for academic achievement. Failure to meet benchmarks for academic achievement of students who do not speak English can adversely impact the accreditation of schools and school divisions.
