PRESIDENT’S REPORT
“l hope you all are busy and pumping plenty of m3.” - Andrew Mitchell Well, it seems like no time has passed, but here we are having pumped out another year. With most sectors of the construction industry in high demand, I do hope you are all busy and pumping out plenty of m3. I would like to start with a thank you to Craig, Aiden and Carol at the HBM Group. After more than three and half years as our secretariat, the benefits of their professional approach to looking after our industry group are really beginning to show. The value of the HBM Group CRM has enabled communication (via the Pump Line eNewsletter) to not only our members, but the industry at large, and this is being recognised and utilised by more and more of the state based Worksafe’s across Australia to get important information to industry stakeholders. If you haven’t already, now is the time to register and join your business with the CPAA to ensure you are getting this valuable information. Our membership numbers continue to grow, along with sales of CPAA products and services. Training and Certification courses are proving to be well attended, and we have identified further courses that will be offered soon that will be the first of their kind in Australia to offer some “off the job” training. These courses will provide a better informed workforce that can only bring more professional and safer concrete pumping and spraying to the industry as a whole.
The National Management Committee has seen some changes over the past 12 months with Peter Loveday (NSW) retiring at the end of 2016. A big thank you to Peter for his valuable contribution on the committee for over 5 years. His vacancy has been filled by Grantley Schloss from Meales (Qld), and we welcome and appreciate him filling the vacancy. To the rest of the committee, also a big thank you for the time made available to assist in making our industry bigger, stronger and safer. The efforts of Anthony Mattar cannot go unnoticed for his work with the production of our National Guidelines. The document has been produced to a stage where it can’t progress without the finalisation of the Australian Standard. This is ever so slowly progressing, however after some 5 years of review, we are now seeing the end in sight. As soon as the Australian Standard can be completed, the National Guidelines can be also be finalised and made ready for distribution. In closing, the CPAA is proud of the progress being made to represent the industry we are all a part of, and can only urge those that may wish to become members, or those members that wish to contribute further to contact the CPAA and help make our industry stronger and safer. In the mean time, stay safe and keep pumping.

MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR
“Our Mission at the CPAA is to improve the Education, Safety and level of Certification of the Australian Concrete Pumping Industry.” - Aiden Chilcott Each year it’s a pleasure to report the achievements of the CPAA and release details and projects for the new-year. I’m excited to share with you the work of the Management Committee over the past 12 months including an Australian first Line Pump Training Course, Certification Events, 2018 Expo details, new CPAA and Member products and so much more. All of the projects that we work on reflect the mission of the Association, which is: “To improve the education, safety and level of certification of the Australian concrete pumping industry through the delivery of valuable advice, useful products and relevant services.” The ‘three pillars’ (Education, Safety and Certification) are expanded on below. They encompass all of the work we do and will continue to do in the coming years. EDUCATION Ensuring that Association members are kept up-todate with industry developments, workplace safety and regulation changes, is one of the principal qualities of the CPAA. To this end, members and interested readers can subscribe to an assortment of news updates and alerts to ensure their work routine and business culture is cemented in current practices. The Pump Line eNewsletter, Safety Alert Blog, SMS and social media updates keep members informed with current news and issues from across the country and around the world. SAFETY The safety of concrete pumpers is our highest priority at the CPAA. The foremost method that the Association uses to increase the safety of pumpers is through the development of nation wide Standards and Guidelines. The regular update of
6

these documents on the safe operation, cleaning and maintenance of concrete placing equipment ensures the promise of a safer construction site for pumpers over the years. CERTIFICATION The CPAA’s Certification events aim to increase knowledge through the dissemination of current, applied information for the benefit of pumpers, manufacturers, suppliers, trainers and inspectors. The variety of courses assist members in achieving the highest degree of professionalism and to be able to maintain their strict safety standards. The certification events also aid in the facilitation of communication, sharing of knowledge and experience between concrete pump operators and to assist in an operator’s development as a skilled pumper. The ‘three pillars’ will ensure that members and the wider industry’s best practice standards will continue to improve. In other news, the CPAA has now moved to a new office at Port Kembla, Wollongong. All CPAA products, including logbooks, manuals, stickers and paraphernalia will be sent from the following location.
Unit 5, 41-47 Five Islands Road Port Kembla, 2505, NSW Once again, I hope you enjoy this year’s Magazine. It has been a pleasure working with members throughout the year to create this edition. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy, safe new year.

The Rock Valve Legendary Performance
The heart of any concrete pump is the valve system that directs concrete from the material cylinders to the pipeline. The Concrete Valve’s performance has a major effect on fuel economy, the machine’s ability to pump difficult mixes, service life of componentry and therefore, business profitability. Only Schwing offers the ROCK valve for unbeatable performance.
Optimum Geometry Maximises Efficiency for Low-Cost Concrete Pumping The ROCK valve does not have the bends of other valve systems and this reduced deflection of concrete minimises pressure loss and wear. The ROCK valve gives you a straight line of sight from the outlet to the pumping piston, ensuring extremely low-friction concrete flow.
ROCK concrete valve concrete flow deflection
other concrete valve concrete flow deflection
Faster to Clean with Less Water Due to its unique design enabling an almost straight flow path the ROCK valve is easier and faster to clean. The ROCK valve provides a direct view from the pump outlet all the way up the delivery cylinder, enabling easy cleaning in just 2 strokes, thereby saving water and reducing cleanout time.
Intelligent Wear Protection The wear in a concrete valve is particularly high as the concrete is directed to the outlet at high pressure. In order to minimise this wear, at the most heavily loaded point of the ROCK Valve, concrete does not rub against steel, but rather on concrete. This is because the intelligent design of the ROCK valve leads to the formation of a concrete triangle after each shift. Protected by this concrete layer, the ROCK valve has a significantly longer service life than other concrete valves, providing noticeably more profit per m³.
Protection of the ROCK inside by concrete triangle
Forces inside the ROCK valve push the cutting ring against the wear plate, providing a more effective seal. This reduces the loss of fines and liquid necessary to lubricate the pipeline, minimising pressure required to pump concrete, improving fuel economy and reducing the potential for blockages.

MEALES CONCRETE PUMPING - TOOWOOMBA ‘The $500 million Toowoomba Grand Central Shopping Centre redevelopment has doubled the size of Centre to 90,000 square metres, requiring an enormous 66,000m3 of concrete for the project scope.’ Specialised Concrete Pumping (SCP) was awarded the concrete pumping package for the project in early 2015 with early works commencing in the second quarter of the same year. In order to place concrete for the project, SCP utilised four Putzmeister 42 metre 5 section Z-Fold placing booms and two Schwing 35 metre 4-section roll and fold placing booms which were serviced by two high pressure line pumps. The placing booms were installed on a variety of mast systems including self-climbing masts and free-standing lattice towers up to heights of 24 metres to accommodate the building’s structure and the tower cranes on site. The MX42 placing booms were advantageous on the project as the Brisbane based pumper was able to service more area with less equipment. The low clearance heights of the 5 section z-fold placing booms proved to be valuable on the project and ensured there were no disruptions with the busy tower cranes on site while pouring. SCP also based one of their 60 metre mobile boom pumps and one of their 47 metre mobile boom pumps on the project full time while utilising their versatile fleet of mobile pumps as required from Brisbane. The pipeline system servicing the placing booms was setup with the ability to service each placing boom simultaneously with some of the system being installed underground and having a horizontal run as far as 200 metres to the placing boom.
Management of a project this size requires a dedicated team both commercially and operationally. Labour requirements fluctuated from day to day; depending on the site’s pouring requirements, from 3 pumping staff up to 12 pump crew per day amongst a team of supervisors, managers and administration staff. With large building sites such as the Grand Central Redevelopment, SCP is used to having to think outside the box quickly and on their feet when it comes to installing their fleet of 55 placing booms. One of the many challenges the pumpers faced on site was due to some last-minute site access changes, SCP needed to install a placing boom large enough to cover one half of the new carpark area with the ground slab already being in place and no piling installed in the desired placing boom location. The SCP team was able to design and manufacture grillage beams under tight time constraints to distribute the placing boom loads over a broader area and provide the stability required on to the basement level ground slab for the concrete placement variation. The project was completed in the first quarter of 2017 with the majority of pumping works being completed between May 2015 and December 2016. For more information about Specialised Concrete Pumping or the shopping centre redevelopment, contact Jason Rutkowski on 04 2972 1139 or at jason@scpqld.com.au.

(Rusty) Morgan recently provided a CPAA sponsored American Shotcrete Association (ASA) Shotcrete Nozzleman Certification session for 11 shotcrete nozzlemen from around Australia on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Rusty is a Civil Engineer with over 50 years
experience in the concrete and shotcrete fields and has worked on over 1000 projects on five continents, including Australia. He has published over 160 papers on various aspects of concrete and shotcrete technology and edited 7 books on the topic.
Q: How did you develop your expertise in Shotcrete? A: In the mid-1970’s I designed the product range for a company in Vancouver which supplied prebagged concrete products to the construction industry. They had heard that the US Army Corps of Engineers had carried out a world-first application of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) for slope stabilization and underground support on a dam project in Idaho, using the dry-mix shotcrete process. We carried out extensive research into this technology and performed the first SFRS application in Canada, stabilizing a railway embankment in Vancouver. We subsequently developed SFRS suitable for application by the pumped wet-mix shotcrete process and the technology took off. It found extensive application in slope stabilization and underground support in tunnels and mines and I found myself busy travelling to projects all over the world. In the 1980’s we carried out pioneering work with the 3M Corporation to develop a polypropylene based macrosynthetic fiber for use in wet-mix shotcrete, as
an alternative to steel fiber reinforcement. The higher ductility of shotcrete made with such fiber proved to be very advantageous in certain sectors of the shotcrete industry and in 2014, Stefan Bernard, Chairman of the Australian Shotcrete Society, reported that over half a million cubic metres of macrosynthetic fibre reinforced shotcrete were being used in Australian mines each year. More recently, (2016) we carried out research and development work on a natural hemp-based fiber and demonstrated that it had many beneficial attributes for use in both wet and dry-mix shotcretes. In addition to these fiber shotcrete developments, in the early 1980’s we carried out the first research and development work in North America into the use of silica fume in shotcrete. This provided a major breakthrough in the industry and silica fume is now widely used around the world in shotcrete for ground support in tunnels and mines and infrastructure rehabilitation in marine environments.
Q: What are some of the most interesting shotcrete projects in which you have been involved? in a challenging desert environment where daytime · From 1985 to 1995 I was involved in the rehabilitation of temperatures often went above 40C, but where nighttime some two km of shipping berth faces in intertidal regions in temperatures could fall below freezing in the winter. the Bay of Fundy at the Port of Saint John, New Brunswick, · In the mid 1990’s I was involved in the final wet-mix SFRS Canada. Silica fume modified SFRS was successfully used to lining of four very large underground desilting chambers in the reconstruct deteriorated old concrete berths in an aggressive ocean environment with a 9m tidal range. Himalyas on the Nathpa Jhakri Hydropower project in India. Ground conditions were very challenging, with a number · In the late 1980’s, I held a two week long shotcrete of fatalities from rockfalls during the education and training course for remote control manipulator initial dry-mix, mesh reinforced arm (robotic) placement of wet-mix, accelerated SFRS for shotcrete ground support work. about 60 miners from all over Australia at Mt. Isa Deep Copper mine in Queensland. These miners went back to For those interested, several of the their respective mines and this was the start of the explosion research and development and of use of fibre reinforced shotcrete in mining in Australia. construction projects referred to · In the early 1990’s I was involved in a multi-million dollar high performance shotcrete repair to the Hibernia offshore above have been written up as case histories and are available in a book: oil production platform (the world’s largest offshore oil “Shotcrete: A Compilation of Papers”, platform) in Newfoundland, Canada. by Dudley R. THE EARLY DAYS OF
CONCRETE PUMPING IN AUSTRALIA
Pump concrete up a pipe? In 1967 I had a concrete placing business targeting domestic work in the Manly Warringah area. I was contacted to price a concrete driveway at Avalon, the caller said: “the job only requires a rough screed finish, nothing else.” I drove to the job and saw this ridiculously long driveway snaking up a hill at least 250ft. It was formed up with steel mesh in place. The owner said, “concrete will be here on Monday 7am, how much to screed the job?” My shocked reply “how in the heck are we going to get concrete up there?” He replied, “I have hired a concrete pump, all you have to do is level the surface” so I quoted a dollar per square yard. Monday arrived, along with a USA Thomsen 600 series truck mounted “flapper valve”, which connected to pipes laid on the Saturday. By 2pm the job was finished and I left with a pocket bulging with cash. It turned out that this was one of the first concrete pumps in Australia, followed then by a few trailer mounted German Schwing pumps, SqueezeCretes, Whiteman and a Case trailer pump (all USA manufactured). A few years later David Bond’s (CPE Machinery) father introduced a water powered Putzmeister, it used a copy of the Thomsen “flapper valve” which turned 90 degrees. Following models had the “Elephant Trunk” valve. Later, when I became friends with Dick and Marvin Bennett, I found out that Karl Schlecht, Putzmeister’s owner had made several trips to the Thomsen factory in Los Angeles. I had taken over the payments of a trailer mounted German Torkrete pump that the previous owner was in dispute with the dealership over reliability problems. Once I sorted it out, the owner re-claimed the pump.
I was now a concrete pumper without a pump. I ordered a Schwing from Improved Equipment and due to late delivery cancelled the order and started building my own pump using the bullet system as well. Once the first pump was operational, I licensed Mole Engineering, a local company selling Ditchwitch Equipment as they had branches Australia wide. In 1968, unhappy with Mole Engineering’s efforts, we parted ways on the basis that they could still sell pumps and I would start building pumps under the Transcrete name. Then in 1974, Australia went into a depression,Transcrete started exporting to South East Asia and I started designing a smaller pump I called Sidewinder with an S-tube valve system. This pump was a huge success and in 1976 we started air-freighting Sidewinders at a rate of one pump per day to the United States. Who were the importing dealers? None other than Dick and Marvin Bennett. The Bennett Brothers sold their operation to Pacific Alloy who in turn manufactured the Sidewinder for Thomsen. Putzmeister purchased Thomsen and slowly changed the Sidewinder and sold it as a Tomkatt. In 1984 we sold a license and Sidewinder designs and trademark to Reed Manufacturing in USA and a Japanese company Sugiue Ltd. - Ian Hay, Transcrete Concrete Pumps

NATIONAL CONCRETE PUMPING GUIDELINES UPDATE The National Management Committee adopted strategic industry plan has committed to the development of a National Concrete Pumping Industry Guidelines to better manage education, information dissemination and engagement industry stakeholders. This Australian Standard specifies the requirements for the safe use of concrete placing equipment. The design, construction, testing and specific requirements of concrete placing equipment are given in AS 1418.15 and the general requirements are specified in AS 1418.1. This Standard is complementary to AS 2550.1, but the requirements of AS 2550.15 shall take precedence over corresponding requirements. The Concrete Pumping Association of Australia is a member of Technical Committee ME005 and ME091 responsible for AS 2550.15 Cranes - Safe Use Part 15: Concrete Placing Equipment and referenced documents. The Standards listed below covers specific requirements for the safe use of concrete placing equipment and is intended for use in conjunction with AS 2550.1 Cranes - Safe Use Part 1: General

requirements. AS 2550.15 Cranes - Safe Use Part 15: Concrete Placing Equipment specifies the requirements, which apply to concrete placing equipment. Subsequent parts cover additional requirements. Motivation for Project: AS 2550.15 (1994) is pending a complete review under the leadership of the Association. Over the past several years a number of State Work Safe Authorities (SWS) and Non- Government Organisations (NGO’s) have developed and published specific requirements or guidelines for the safe operation, cleaning and maintenance of concrete placing equipment. In part, each published document has lead to increased conflict with AS 2550.15 and further fragmentation of operating practices across Australia. The aim of the project is to review, adopt and develop a nationally consistent guideline on the safe operation, cleaning and maintenance of concrete placing equipment.
