MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

"A BOOMING YEAR FOR CONSTRUCTION" - Craig Heidrich The Concrete Pumping Association of Australia (CPAA) is the national body representing the interests of the concrete pumping industry within Australia. We exist to provide a strong, unified and respected voice for the concrete pumping industry, whilst working to improve the professionalism, safety, standards and performance of the industry it represents. Our current mission is to improve the standing of the industry by informing and educating our members through the provision of valuable advice as well as relevant products and services. An increasingly important role of the CPAA is to represent the concrete pumping industry to Australian governments and other stakeholders to ensure the best outcomes for members in terms of the sustainability of the industry and the safety of employees. As noted by our President, Grantley Schloss - 2018 has been a busy year! Some highlights since 2014; • Membership has grown almost 300%. Why – the most common reason for joining or re-joining the Association: “You guys seem to be doin’ stuff… promoting education and training, updating our 25 year old standards and generally representing and raising the profile of our industry” • Safety related product sales increased by 360% • Launched and delivered new training products ‘3 x Shotcrete Course’ and ‘2 x Line Pump Course’ • Delivery of two (2) very successful ‘Expo’ events in Sydney and Melbourne • Improved communication with 1,300 concrete pumping related business through our Magazine, e-news, website, facebook and webinars

8

2018 Concrete Pumper’s Annual Magazine

Grantley also highlighted the booming construction year which is almost behind us and forecasts suggesting investment in new infrastructure and major projects in the pipeline for 2019 look good for the industry. Reported widely across the construction industry, the last decade will be one to remember for the building and construction industry. Whilst the US housing market crashed in 2008, which more than likely triggered the Global Financial Crisis almost a decade ago, the Australian construction market never ‘really’ crashed, but weathered that storm. Many factors have contributed towards this outcome, but overall a conservative business operating environment ‘banking policies’ could have been major contributors to this outcome. The last decade has been characterised by an unprecedented investment boom in the mining sector, private investment into roads and highways and housing construction (residential and commercial) throughout Australia. Having said that, the last four years have shown a decline in the value of engineering construction activity (good indicator for pre-infrastructure investment), mainly in Western Australia, with some moderate recovery in 2017-18 seen. Forecasts beyond 2019 are expected on the back of some big public spending commitments by the Federal and State Governments into major transport infrastructure projects and is likely to offset any softening of domestic and commercial construction activity. Federal and State Governments are expected to invest $75 billion into Transport Infrastructure out to 2023, funded in part through additional revenues,

generated by the housing boom, and funds from asset recycling being injected into state government investment for the transport sector.

years. The committee has ‘tested this prescriptive principle’ by reviewing international practices e.g. EN12001, industry members operational data and accident and incident statistics. The Committee has proposed that the Inspections should be based on equipment hours of operation while pumping concrete, placing more importance and reliance on the annual inspections. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Between

The above chart (Source: Master Builders Association, Industry Forecasts December 2017) shows the pipeline of major transport projects forecast out to 2023. Activity is expected to continue to rise through the year and peak in 2019-20. Beyond the productivity enhancements through this infrastructure, it may offset the predicted moderation in residential and commercial construction over the next couple of years. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO THE CONCRETE PUMPING INDUSTRY? As service providers, we are an import-

ant pipeline in the safe and effective placement of concrete which is significant in all of these projects. Good people, prudent equipment investment coupled with good maintenance will be a successful formula over the next 5-6 years. SO HOW IS THE CPAA CONTRIBUTING? One example

of the CPAA activities over the past 2 years where it has been making a contribution to this formula for success is getting back on track and driving the comprehensive review of AS2550.15 (1994). The Association has been leading this process since mid 2016. Whilst there are likely to be many changes to AS2550.15 which is currently under review, one significant change proposed relates to “Major Inspection Requirements” and mandatory strip down after six (6)

1999-2005 a number of State Safe Work Authorities and NonGovernment Organisations have published codes of practice or guidelines for the safe operation, cleaning and maintenance of concrete placing equipment. In part, each published document has led to increased confusion and conflict with AS2550.15, creating further fragmented operating practices for concrete placing equipment across Australia. The aim of the Committee’s work is to publish a nationally consistent approach to the safe operation, cleaning and maintenance of concrete placing equipment. Representing the interests of Australian concrete pumping industry to Government bodies, Regulators, Agencies, Standards Australia and key sector influencers is an important role for the CPAA. As a Not-For-Profit organisation our activities and services we provided to members are funded partly by membership. Membership fees are a tax deductable business expense and therefore should be considered an investment in your business. Membership involvement will yield dividends through generating new business contacts through your company affiliation. Membership offers your business with an opportunity to have a voice in shaping the future of the concrete pumping industry. So why not consider getting involved and becoming an active participant in association activities.

PLENTY OF GRUNT UNDER PRESSURE

Mitchcon’s recent projects have put their 2018 Schwing S 20 Truck Mounted Concrete Pump to the ultimate test. Mitchcon Pump Operators are currently on site on a Downer Construction Project for Metro Trains constructing a train service facility. Once completed, trains will continue past the end of the rail line at Nar Nar Goon in Gippsland, Victoria, into one of the two sheds that make up the maintenance facility. The constraints of the site have presented challenges which most concrete pumps wouldn’t be able to handle with such ease. The low roof heights and a myriad of obstructions inside the facility ended up being a great opportunity to utilize the smooth operation of this versatile 4 stage RZ boom. The S 20’s extra articulation, specifically the 270º ranges on each Z allowed for creativity working under the low heights, close to the working parameters of the machine. Both the boom geometry and how well balanced the controls are have made it easy to operate. On top of this, the machine is pumping harsh concrete mixes and handling it effortlessly, thanks to the S 20’s Twin Circuit P2020 pump kit and Rock Concrete Valve. The P2020 pump kit features material cylinders with a 2-metre stroke and 200mm diameter, capable of maximum concrete pressure of 108 bar and maximum output of 111m³/ hr (max. pressure and output can’t be achieved simultaneously). Thank you to Jake Mitchell (Mitchcon) and Damien McTernan (Schwing Australia) for contributions to this article.

MITCHCON AND THEIR NEW SCHWING S 20 GETTING THE JOB DONE

A Melbourne project has also benefitted from Mitchcon’s New SCHWING and its compact setup. One of John Holland Group’s Access shafts on the Metro Tunnel Early Works Project has a precast loading area of just over 4 metres in width. In addition, there were also narrow parameters for the pre-cast planks with stabilizers. Fortunately, the S 20 was able to fully extend all outriggers despite limited opportunity to do so, and didn't need extra bog mat requirements due to the light 11 tonne point load on the front outriggers. The compact setup and manoeuvrable boom geometry allowed the machine to situate at various locations and carefully thread through the depths of the shaft despite navigating around steel whalers at each drop as the shaft increased in depth. Soaring to 90 storeys above the heart of the CBD, Brisbane Skytower will deliver extraordinary luxury amidst breathtaking views. On Margaret Street in the CBD – it will reach 274m late this year, stealing the crown from the government's "Tower of Power" which stands at 260m. The residential tower will be the first development to reach the city's height restriction limit. The Skytower is promising ultimate luxury for their 1141 one, two and three-bedroom apartments and four spacious penthouses, including innovative enduser technology with high-speed NBN and advanced integrated services. The 89th floor will be home to the recreation deck, featuring Australia’s highest infinityedge swimming pool. The Brisbane Skytower is on track for completion in March 2019. To meet this deadline, the construction will see up to 250 workers on site, with construction at higher levels and fitout simultaneously performed below. Flowcrete recently had their Junjin JSP2111 supplying concrete to the entire build.

Flowcrete recently had their Junjin JSP2111 stationary pump supplying concrete to the entire build with max. 113m3/hr output and up to 284 bar pressure.

Pumpers started each day with one truck of slurry. To prime the line pump, a total of five cubic metres of concrete was used. The concrete agitator (AGI), more commonly known as a concrete mixer, transported and mixed concrete from the batching plant to the construction site. An average of 30 to 34 concrete agitators (AGIs) were used per day, with two AGIs backed onto the pump and one waiting at all times. This resulted in approximately 250 cubic metres of concrete pumped each day, and over 57,000 cubic metres of concrete used to date. Each jump is four metres with 50 metres of ground line and 300 metres of vertical line to the top of the boom. While the pump has the ability to be switched to high pressure, all work so far has been completed with low pressure. This shows that the ability of the Junjin JSP2111 is much greater when high pressure is used. Working with Hutchinson Builders who own the pump, Flowcrete provides maintenance & ongoing support to the operators. Onsite maintenance is performed monthly by the Flowcrete Group Queensland Branch.

Australia 108 will be 9 levels higher than the Eureka Tower, currently Melbourne’s tallest building, and will become Australia’s tallest building. Located in Melbourne’s Southbank, the project comprises a 319-metre luxury apartment tower featuring 1,105 apartments across 100 levels. Australia 108 is being constructed by Multiplex for leading Singaporean developer World Class Land (Aspial Corporation). Melbourne concrete pumping contractor, Rapidcrete, currently have two BSA 14000 Putzmeister trailer pumps on-site set up with an Esser 400 (single layer hardened) ZX125 high pressure concrete delivery pipeline system. Construction began in late 2015 with heavy machinery drilling 46 metres down into the Southbank Boulevard site. The building foundation was then completed nine months later. Core walls supporting the high-rise are almost two metres thick, and the building’s facade will be covered in 108 glass panels, tipping the scales at 2500 tonnes. The penthouse, set to cover the entire 100th floor, is already breaking records as the highest residential dwelling in the southern hemisphere. It’s also the most expensive individual apartment sale in Australia – selling for $25 million in 2015. Earlier this year, owners of one and two-bedroom units up to level 30 were given the green light to move in, insulated from construction noise above by at least 20 levels. Currently standing at just over 70 levels, the development is expected to be completed in late 2020. Developer:

6 REASONS - Barbara Nuss, Profit Soup

If you’re like most CPAA members, you are working to finalise your 2018 financials and with the help of your accountant will soon have satisfied the tax man with the required information and payments. Happy to be done with such an unpleasant task, you will quickly file away the reports and return your attention to the “real” business. But wait! Not so fast! Those reports contain a wealth of information to answer questions that have been nagging you all year. Questions like: • How much profit should my company be earning? • Am I spending too much on labour or repairs? • How many employees should I have to support my current turnover? • Do I have enough equipment – or too much? • Am I managing my cash properly? • Do I have too much debt? If only you had the time and a process to put the information to work for you. That’s where the CPAA financial benchmark study comes in. The board of directors has announced that for the first time in the organisation’s history, the CPAA has commissioned the services of an independent benchmarking firm to survey its members. Survey collection for the confidential project managed by Profit Soup, will begin 1 November. Those participating in the study will gain CFO-level tools, insights and conversations that would cost thousands of dollars to receive from an outside consultant. Here are six ways you can benefit from investing your time and energy to participate.

TO BENCHMARK YOUR BUSINESS

1. Learn what companies your size are making The study will contrast aggregate financial profiles for companies of various size, based on their 2018 concrete pumping revenue. From the profiles, you can determine just how much gross profit margin companies your size typically earn, see how much of each revenue dollar is spent on expenses like advertising, rent, equipment repairs and maintenance, staff costs and more, and learn just how much falls to the bottom line. 2. Bring people up in the business The process of transferring your numbers to the survey form leads you to see your business in a new light. The instant assessment that prints directly from the survey provides immediate eye-opening feedback. Assigning this task to next-gen management builds financial awareness. Reviewing the study results together is a great exercise for leaders and protégés to collaborate as they assess the strengths and weaknesses of the company, identify business priorities and brainstorm solutions for a go-forward business improvement plan. Participating in the study process gives everybody a better understanding of the financial side of the business. With all the players on board, teams achieve more. And engaging future leaders in this way sets the stage for prioritising financial focus and results in your management process. 3. Test your new ideas Perhaps you’ve recently taken a new direction or approach to your market, your processes, your staffing plan or your equipment investment strategy. Or you just simply want to determine the impact of a proposed price increase. Industry comparisons provide business intelligence that can support or challenge your strategic directives. Assessing the costs, staffing and equipment profiles available in the study lifts

Study participants will receive a report on industry trends that contains metrics that assess equipment utilisation, lavour costs, profit, cash flow, debt control and return on investment, to name a few.

32

2018 Concrete Pumper’s Annual Magazine

your own understanding of industry conditions and trends. This understanding transforms the reports of your own business metrics from a list of statistics and percentages to objective feedback that puts your results and strategies in perspective. 4. Improve communications on branch profitability Members with multiple locations may submit a survey for each location and receive both branch and consolidated company analysis. This shows managers responsible for a division or location to how they stack up against industry standards. And the study’s “Guide to Benchmarking” provides a structure for financial conversations that helps non-financial users make sense of the reports. Applying the steps outlined in the Guide improves the quality of financial feedback and communication between owners and managers to take your business to the next level. 5. Validate business value If you’re buying or selling a business, industry benchmarks provide the business intelligence to assess the financial efficiency and profit potential of the subject company. Sellers who are outperforming industry averages may be an attractive target and able to negotiate for a premium price for their fleet. Buyers who compare the target company’s results to industry benchmarks can reveal opportunities for improvement which may leverage their return on investment. 6. Borrow smarter If you’re not completely comfortable talking about financial information with lenders, you’re not alone. Building a long-standing relationship based on mutual respect and good communication can make the interactions more comfortable. Still, many people feel they are at a disadvantage when negotiating for the financing they need. You can strengthen your standing by establishing a supportive relationship with your lender. Sharing industry financial information is a tremendous starting point. If the study shows that you are a strong performer, you may be able to negotiate a better interest rate based on your standing in the industry. If you’re underperforming, don’t be afraid to talk about your challenges. Turn a negative into a positive by talking about how you have or plan to change your operations to improve profit and cash flow. You can borrow more effectively when you and your lender both understand your business better and when you can demonstrate that you manage by the numbers.

Study participants will receive a report on industry trends and a confidential financial assessment, comparing their results to the benchmarks from the study. Pull those 2018 financials out and use them to guide your pathway to better business. The survey and reports you receive for participating will leverage your year-end reports to deliver valuable insight for making 2019 your most successful year ever. About the CPAA Financial Benchmark Study: The CPAA has commissioned the independent financial benchmarking firm, Profit Soup, to study financial results of its members. Profit Soup has conducted similar studies for the American Concrete Pumping Association, Crane Industry Council of Australia and many other industries including equipment rental, specialty contracting trades, as well as a host of other business models through trade associations and franchise organizations all over the US, Canada and Australia. Members’ information is completely confidential and not shared with the CPAA or any other party. Only aggregate figures are included in the report. Enrol now and don’t miss out on these great benefits. Stuart Donaldson will be presenting two toolbox talks at this year’s Concrete Pumper’s Expo. Come along to get involved in this project and see the results. 2018 Concrete Pumper’s Expo Sunday 4th November 10am – 4pm Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park 3 NUMBERS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT 10.30AM – 11.00AM In business today, there is no shortage of reports to read and numbers to track – such that it is challenging to know which metrics matter most. Join business coach and financial advocate Stuart Donaldson, for a fresh perspective on financial management that is simple, succinct and strategic. BENCHMARKING YOUR BUSINESS: AM I EARNING ALL THAT I SHOULD? - 2.30PM – 3.00PM If you’re wondering how your growth, profit and cash flow compare to other pumping businesses similar to yours, you’ve come to the right place. 5 MINUTES WITH YOUR CEO

- Craig Heidrich

What do you enjoy most about being a part of the concrete pumping industry? With more than 20 years of managing construction material industry (Trade) associations with members that supply materials used to manufacture concrete, taking on the management of the Concrete Pumping Association of Australia allowed us to see the other end of the pipeline! Excuse my bad joke! In 2013, I was approached by one of the CPAA Board members - Peter Loveday, Coastwide Pumping - tasked with finding an Association secretariat services company for the CPAA. Peter spelt out what he believed were the many challenges for the Concrete pumping industry. Peter's passion and knowledge of the industry hooked my interest and we submitted a proposal. We were appointed to manage CPAA’s operations in 2014. HBM Group have since managed, supported, facilitated and implemented agreed plans and contracted services. HBM Group professionally manages a number of industry associations and is well positioned and highly trusted to deliver on the Association aims and objectives to members. What do you think is one of the main challenges for the concrete pumping industry? During the strategic planning stage it becomes clear the Association had an interesting evolution over its 27 year history. From a mixture of formal and informal State based entities, resolving to form into a nationally representative body in 2008. We quickly came to a view that to fulfil its stated mission the Association must be seen to be representing the interests of Australian concrete pumping contractors; concrete pump suppliers and repairers; manufacturers interests; concrete pump certifier and assessors; registered training organisations (RTOs) and members, to key user influencers impacting on the concrete pumping industry such as; Builders, Construction Contractors, Federal and State Government Departments, relevant Regulators and key influencers and decision-makers.

42

2018 Concrete Pumper’s Annual Magazine

A major challenge preventing this mission was a highly fragmented and uncoordinated sector. In short, the concrete pumping industry was widely considered as a cottage industry full of ‘cowboys’ with little regard for safe practices. We need to turn this perception around! What are some notable achievements throughout your career so far? Just some highlights since 2014; • Membership has grown almost 300% • Sale of safety related Products has increased 360% • Launched and delivered new training products ‘3 x Shotcrete Course’ and ‘2 x Line Pump Course’ • Delivery of two (2) very successful ‘Expo’ events in Sydney and Melbourne • Improved communication with 1,300 business through our Magazine, e-news, website, Facebook and webinars I believe we have redefined the CPAA as the national body representing the interests of the concrete pumping industry within Australia, providing a strong, unified and respected voice for the concrete pumping industry across Australia whilst working to improve the professionalism, safety, standards and performance of the industry. We now know there are approximately 1,300 concrete pumping related businesses across Australia responsible for providing time critical, dependable and safe concrete placing ability to both major and minor infrastructure. The industry employs some 12,000 people operating invested capital of $3.5 billion to deliver various materials (e.g. pre-mixed concrete) using a safe, reliable and efficient method each year. In Australia, the concrete pumping industry contributes approximately $1.5 billion of revenue into the economy and is an integral part of the construction materials industry contribution of $12 billion to GDP. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Don’t cut corners, work with your key stakeholders and be transparent about what you are trying to achieve. If you can’t be passionate about your industry (what you are doing) maybe you need to find a new business or job!
