Library News Director’s Message The new year is here, and with it, new hours at Hennepin County libraries. Our 2014 hours schedule responds to patron requests for more open hours across the library system and more consistent hours between libraries. We are excited to give you more access to Library resources as well as a less-confusing schedule. In 2014, we are also investing in our collection to reduce patron wait times for materials, and enhancing our website to make it easier to use from wherever you are. We will continue to invest in our library buildings, too, creating spaces that are innovative, accessible and welcoming. Visit us often this year and venture into other Hennepin County libraries that are convenient for you. We will be happy to serve you in our buildings, online and in the community.

See hours schedule on p. 30 or at www.hclib.org/locations.

Hennepin County Library has added 249 open hours per week across our 41-library system. In total, the Library is now open more than 2,000 hours each week to serve you. As of Jan. 5, 2014, all Hennepin County libraries open at either 9 a.m. or noon. All libraries close at 5 p.m., 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. This has moved the Library from 15 sets of open hours to four; from four opening times to two; and from seven closing times to three.

Lois Langer Thompson Library Director

Temporary Library for Webber Park Following the July 2013 closure of Webber Park Library due to structural failure, the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners approved a lease for a temporary library facility for Webber Park-area residents in Camden Center at 4203 Webber Parkway in Minneapolis. The temporary library, which opened in December, offers residents access to the same number of computers as well as a browsing collection for adults and children. Hours at the temporary library are the same: Tuesday and Thursday 12-8 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Hennepin County Library is working with County and community partners on a long-term solution for Webber Park Library.

New Library Hours

Find more Library news at www.hclib.org/ newsroom.

Overall, 34 Hennepin County libraries have increased hours, three libraries have maintained hours and four libraries have reduced hours. At all Hennepin County libraries, new hours are more aligned with the days of the week and the times of day patrons are currently visiting. The Library will continue to monitor patron-use trends at all locations. Library Help Desk and Ask Us service hours have also been extended to maintain their availability during all library open hours and to increase access to reference service by IM, text and email.

Event Funding

Hennepin County Library events include programs, classes and more. Some events are available across the system, others are community-specific. All are free and open to the public, and all provide opportunities for residents to be active and vitally engaged. In 2013, about 210,000 adults, teens and children attended library-sponsored events.

Our Friends As an independent nonprofit organization, Friends of the Hennepin County Library (www.supporthclib.org) is the primary vehicle of support for private fundraising for our system. Friends of HCL raises critically needed funds; presents cultural programs; and coordinates the 41 volunteer local Friends groups. In 2012, this funding community provided approximately $1.2 million in total support – giving $556,603 in direct cash support to the Library and $398,238 in indirect support through programming, public awareness activities and other activities.

Sponsors, Partners and Collaborators Another way the Library delivers high-quality events is by working with respected community sponsors, partners and collaborators. For example: The G U T H R I E T H E A T E R (www.guthrietheater.org), known around the world for artistic excellence and educational innovation, delivers Act Out, interactive theater classes for kids, adults and teens. The T E X T I L E C E N T E R (www.textilecentermn.org), a national center for fiber art, offers Crafty Minnesota, hands-on craft programs for adults. OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE (www.cce.umn.edu/olli), a volunteer-led group affiliated

with the University of Minnesota, leads discussion groups for older adults.

Our generous Friends, sponsors, partners and collaborators are too numerous to list here. Learn more about how specific events are funded at www.hclib.org/events.

Legacy Amendment Since 2011, the Library has greatly increased the variety of events offered thanks to the taxpayers of Minnesota through the Minnesota Legacy Amendment Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund (www.legacy.leg.mn). In 2013 alone, 400-plus events were attended by more than 9,000 patrons thanks to this funding.
