LONG LEARNING with the Library
Early Literacy
Learning Begins at Birth When you Talk, Read, and Sing with your child – even before they can use words – you’re helping them learn. Research shows that talking, reading, and singing with your child every day from birth helps build their brains as well as important language, math, reading, and social skills for use in school. Talk, read, and sing with your child in the language you are most comfortable using. Keep at it, you are making a difference!
Building Blocks of Early Literacy Children who begin school with well-developed early literacy skills have greater success learning to read and generally have greater success throughout their school years.
Talking with your child helps build language and vocabulary skills. Find early literacy programs here!
Reading together is the best way to help your child become a strong reader. Singing helps your child hear the sounds in words and build their vocabulary. Writing helps children learn that letters and words represent sounds and have meaning. Playing is how children learn, and how they come to understand their world.
Learning Tip
Parents who regularly interact and talk with their children build their word bank. The more words your child knows, statistically the better academically they will do.
Reading is Fun at All Ages Print Meets Audio Tour Read-along books combine picture books with audiobooks for emergent readers. Audiobooks develop listening skills and quiet concentration, and following along visually while listening can enhance word-recognition ability.
Children push a button to listen and read. VOX Books combine picture books with audio recordings that capture children’s attention and make learning and literacy development fun.
TumbleBooks are animated, talking picture books. They take existing picture books, add animation, sounds, music, and narration to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you.
OverDrive for Kids is a dedicated collection that displays content only for kids and teens. It can be tailored to include juvenile titles, young adult titles, or both. Children can browse and borrow books that are age, grade, and reading-level appropriate.
Reading Fact
Re-reading helps children of all ages with greater fluency, allowing them to give more attention to making sense of what they have just read. Re-reading helps children develop greater accuracy in reading.
