FEATURED: Hello 2021

If there’s one thing that we can all find common ground on, it is the relief of turning the calendar to 2021. With a COVID-19 vaccine in distribution and the lessons in resilience, flexibility, community and creativity that we’ve learned in 2020, there’s optimism on the horizon for this year. Here at the chamber, we are looking forward to shaking hands and seminars, gatherings, celebrating milestones in our community, and so much more. Here’s what we are looking forward to in 2021: • A vaccinated community. • Being able to once again shake hands at our Conversation + Cocktails and Small Business seminars. • Seeing so many faces at our Small Business Week events, Chamber Ball, and other great events. • Beaufort County School children going back to the classroom five days a week. • Continuing to welcome our visitors safely. • The RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing April 12-18. • Our beloved festivals: Hilton Head Island Seafood Festival, HHI Concours d’Elegance, Historic Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival, Crescendo, and more! • Our referbished chamber website that is coming in the first quarter of this year. • Welcoming more new businesses and members. • Continuing to keep you informed via our popular Tele-Town Halls. Join us and engage with us this year as we continue to convey, convene and connect our community. 4

If 2020 taught business owners and entrepreneurs one thing to survive and thrive, it is to constantly evolve. As life returns to somewhat normal later this year, the pandemic has left an indelible mark on how we do business. Here are 10 resolutions you can make to help you continue to succeed in 2021. Get online and no touching. E-commerce will continue to be popular. According to IBM, it grew by 20% last year. If your business can offer e-commerce or virtual options, invest in it as well as alternative payment options such as touchless credit/debit card payment or mobile pay. The National Retail Federation reported that contactless payments have increased 69% since January. Be local and sustainable. The early days of the pandemic affected small businesses the most communities took notice and sprang into action to help their neighbors. According to Salesforce, 59% of consumers would rather buy from a small business, and hometown pride will continue into 2021. COVID-19 also disrupted the supply chain and left many looking to local sources to get what they needed. Get virtual. If you have the opportunity to offer any sort of virtual service, or are looking to either start a new business or expand your offerings, jump at the chance. Models that are rooted in technology will continue to be popular, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, including health and fitness, cybersecurity, food delivery, gaming, home improvement, and telemedicine. Understand data. As more businesses go virtual, it will give your employees more flexibility and you a goldmine of data to understand your customers better. It also leaves you vulnerable. Invest in cybersecurity as you would your brick-and-mortar office or storefront.

Work from home, or let your employees. If your business can offer remote work options for your employees, do so to retain and compete for top talent. Nearly 60 percent of small to medium-sized businesses will continue to offer remote work options in the long term, according to a study by Intermedia. Get social. More than ever during the pandemic, people turned to and engaged in social media, and many businesses increased their presence. Next year, people will be looking for more authentic experiences and presence. Invest in curating and expanding your social media accounts. Work on your company EQ. People are looking for a purpose. According to the 2020 Zeno Strength of Purpose study, customers are more likely to patronize and recommend a business that has a purpose, core values, and support for social causes. As well, younger people entering the workforce are looking for a career, not a job. Work on your vision and mission statement to give purpose to your company. Be conservative ... with your finances. Many businesses in 2020 focused on not going into the red, but this year will be different. Can you automate or outsource anything? Can you consolidate software? Can you renegotiate vendor contracts? Be prepared. While it feels that you could survive anything after tossing out your business plan and making it through 2020, you still need to be prepared. Have your business plan, goals, and strategy for this year in writing and ready. Get involved. When customers know that a business is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, they are 68% more likely to patronize it, according to ACCE. Engage with us this year to meet new people, make connections, learn new things, and grow your business. Sources: Small Business Administration, Forbes, Fundbox.com

ADVOCACY: Shop Small

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY

Success!

Americans across the country spent billions of dollars on the 11th annual Small Business Saturday on November 28, and our local community was no exception as shoppers came out to support our local merchants that make our community so unique. We were proud to once again be a Neighborhood Champion in the effort, passing out Shop Small swag to local businesses and promoting our small businesses through our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages. Small businesses are the backbone of a community, and there’s evidence to back that up. • Nearly 70% of every $100 spent at a local shop stays in the community in the form of salaries, charitable contributions, and more. • Two out of three people say they are likely to shop at a small business this holiday season. • Seven out of 10 people say it’s more important to support small businesses than to get the best deal.

Fresh Produce

We encourage you to shop local all year long! It helps our economy and our community.

5 5 QUESTIONS

Questions

with Dr. Jane Kelly

During our Chamber Tele-Town Halls, Dr. Jane Kelly explains the latest numbers and news about COVID-19 in Beaufort County and South Carolina. Now she answers five questions about predicted COVID-19 trends in 2021.

1

How quickly does DHEC anticipate that the vaccine will become available to the general public following distribution to medical professionals and the at-risk population? It’s difficult to say at this time, as it all depends on vaccine supply and demand. We could remain in this first phase, phase 1a, for several weeks or months before we advance into phase 1b, and then remain in phase 1b for several weeks or months before we reach phase 2 and then phase 3. Vaccine production and supply is expected to significantly ramp up in early 2021, so it’s possible that enough vaccine could be available to everyone by late spring, but that’s not really in our control and could change. We’ll continue to keep South Carolinians as up to date as possible on vaccine information.

16 LOWCOUNTRY BUSINESS CONNECTION

2

How have safety measures for the pandemic impacted the flu season?

So far, South Carolina has had low influenza activity. Wearing a face covering, watching your physical distance from non-household members, washing hands frequently, and avoiding indoor gatherings has probably contributed substantially to reducing flu transmission. But these things have not eliminated flu in South Carolina, and it is still flu season for a few months to come. It is not too late to get your flu shot. If you have not gotten your flu shot yet, please go do so. This may be the most important flu shot of your life. Influenza lowers your resistance to other bacterial and viral infections. Can you imagine what it would be like to have both influenza and COVID-19 at the same time?

EMTs and firefighters get the COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine. Photo courtesy of the Town of Hilton Head Island Facebook page

3

What percentage of the population would have to be vaccinated to reach “herd immunity?”

This estimate depends on community transmission, the overall efficacy of a vaccine, and individual response to a vaccine. One cannot control an epidemic on the rise with vaccine alone. Fortunately, the two vaccines recently authorized for emergency use (Pfizer and Moderna vaccines) have 95% efficacy. This is excellent, but it is still true that for 5% of people the vaccine will not induce immunity. Infectious disease modelers estimate that 70% of the population will need to be fully vaccinated (2 doses) to reach “herd immunity”. It may be higher if some people fail to get the second dose of vaccine. It is important to get both doses of vaccine at the right time, and to continue to wear masks, watch your distance, and wash hands until we reach herd immunity. HiltonHeadBlufftonChamber.org | JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2021

17

4

We’re all looking for a return to “normal.” Based on what we know today, when would you anticipate things would become more normal and masks would become unnecessary? We can’t say for certain at this time -- there are just a lot of unknowns, like how quickly vaccine will become widely available, how many people will choose to receive it, and happens after the holiday season. We’ve been seeing spikes in cases right after holidays and public health officials here and across the country are really concerned about the cases and deaths and hospitaliazations we could see here in the next few weeks if people don’t heed the warnings to please stay home and stay home. Even after we receive our vaccine shots, we’ll need to wear masks and socially distance until enough of the population has been vaccinated. The country will have to take a very careful and calculated approach to how and when current public health actions like masks and physical distancing are relaxed. We understand how much people want to return to their pre-pandemic lives, but masks and physical distancing are really two of the easiest things we can do to take care of each other. The vaccine is the light at the end of the tunnel and we can get there if we stay committed to the daily precautions that help limit this virus.

5

In addition to safety measures such as masks and hand washing, what are the top three things we can do to strengthen our immune systems to help with protection? • Get your flu shot • Stop smoking if you smoke: DHEC’s S.C. Tobacco Quitline offers resources to help people end tobacco use • Eat well and exercise -- benefits immune system but also help with mental and emotional stress
