hat would the Lowcountry be like without tourism? Would there be over 300 restaurants, over 60 miles of leisure trails, 24 golf courses, 12 miles beach, or opportunities for kayaking, playing tennis or Pickleball, or so much more? Without tourism, our community would look much different. There’s the restaurants, amenities, our pristine beaches, the lower taxes and high property values, accessible health care, education, ease of travel, the festivals, arts and culture and sporting activities we all enjoy. A thriving hospitality industry affects so many industries and livelihoods: Real estate, bankers, landscape artists, architects, lawyers, doctors, teachers, marketing agencies, builders, interior designers. Each and every job here somehow touches tourism, whether it’s serving the visitors themselves or the businesses that do. It’s all about balance. We are committed to balancing a vibrant economy with our Lowcountry quality of life. Thank you to all who took our Resident Sentiment Survey. We are looking forward to sharing the results with you!

FEATURED: 5 Questions With

Questions
with Mike Wagner
It’s summertime!
Shore Beach Service does more than provide lifeguards and rentals at Hilton Head beaches. Mike Wagner, the Owner & Operations Manager, sits down to answer 5 questions about our Island’s beaches.
Q1: Have you had the same challenges that so many businesses are facing finding workforce? That’s been my favorite question lately because we haven’t. It’s funny because [a few weeks ago], we had just seen on the Today Show a story about a national lifeguard shortage. And I’m looking at our weekend schedule and thinking: We’re loaded. We have a lot of people. We’ve been very fortunate with that. This season, we’ll have about 90 guards on our beaches. I really enjoy the staff that we have. We hire a lot of college swimmers, and there are a lot of foriegn college swimmers. You’d be amazed if you looked at rosters of college swim teams. About a week or two ago, I was sitting in our orientation and I looked around at the guards, and there was a Croatian, two Italians, a German, a Brazilian, one from the Czech Republic. And our staff who are from the U.S., most are not from here. We just get people from everywhere. To me, that’s fun. 8

Q2: How was this year’s Memorial Day weekend compared to last year’s? Last year for us was so different because the beaches were closed for most of April, and when we talk about having 90 lifeguards a season … we brought in 60 or 70 lifeguards in about a week and half time period when they are usually spread out over the month of May. [The beaches] were a bit less crowded last year. This year it was full-on. It was busier than any Memorial Day weekend that I can remember.
Q3: One of Shore Beach Service’s jobs is helping to keep our beaches clean, and there’s been some attention recently to beach trash. How do you address that? That’s a huge part of our job. It gets reported a lot in the paper and elsewhere that there were tons of trash and people assume that it’s just laying out there on the beach and we’re picking it all up. By and large, the trash is in the cans. People don’t realize that we’re taking the trash from the cans to our dumpsite.
10 LOWCOUNTRY BUSINESS CONNECTION
Q4: What’s the one thing you wish that visitors and residents understood about our beaches? To really understand the ordinances before you come to the beach. One of our jobs is to advise on those ordinances. Especially the new ordinances, like the one where you can’t dig holes or you have to level-off those holes at the end of the day. It’s a lot of time just spent advising on ordinances.
Q5: What are some of the strangest questions beach-goers have asked your guards? We actually talk about this during lifeguard orientation. I try to explain to guards that there really aren’t any dumb questions, but sometimes the phrasing of what they are asking is really strangely put. One of the most common questions is “Are there sharks in the water?” If you think about what they are asking, it’s not a dumb question. They know that there are sharks in general in the ocean. What they are asking is if we see them. But as for funny questions, I remember personally being asked, “What time do the steam rollers come out to make the sand nice and hard?” We’ve got metal hole diggers that we use to put umbrellas up. I got asked once if I was digging for the tide.
