FEATURE: A Conversation with Jerry Glenn

A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS:

Honesty + A Greeting Jerry Glenn Reflects On Doing Business In The Lowcountry At 90 years old, Jerry Glenn is busier than ever. “I don’t have any free time. I get up at 6 a.m., I go to bed at 11 p.m. If God is good to me, he’ll give me a few more good years,” he said. “I’ll work until the day I die. It’s just my makeup. It keeps me going.” Since closing Reminisce in Bluffton in December, Glenn has continued appraising collections of baseball cards and other memorabilia. It’s not his first time running a local small business, he previously opened Cinnamon Bear in 1988 and Legends Sports Gallery in 2006 in Main Street Village on Hilton Head Island, and then Reminisce in the Bluffton Promenade in 2016. He first came upon Hilton Head Island when Glenn and his wife, Audrey, were traveling to Florida to visit their daughter, Lori, in 1987. They came across model homes in Hilton Head Plantation. The prices were reasonable, so were the taxes, and they decided that here was where they would stay. “We built a home and built a business in the same year,” Glenn said. His favorite part of having a small business was the people, and meeting residents and visitors from all corners of the country. “I really enjoy meeting the people. Because of my age, the people who came into the shop were retirees from a lot of different states,” Glenn said. “In my former job, I traveled everywhere so I can relate to them.”

6

LOWCOUNTRY BUSINESS CONNECTION

Over Glenn’s nearly 75 years in sales – first for A&P and then for Nabisco – and owning his small businesses, he has advice for those going out on their own: Be original, be honest, and always say hello. “Don’t be a copycat. You must do something that nobody else has,” he said. “Be honest and trustworthy. The reason I am selling so much is from being trusted and honest. And greet every customer as they walk in the store.”

Don’t be a copycat. You must do something that nobody else has. Be honest and trustworthy. The reason I am selling so much is from being trusted and honest. And greet every customer as they walk in the store.

FEATURED: Apprenticeship

Looking For Workforce?

APPRENTICESHIP WORKS What happens when you combine education and on-the-job training? The region builds a skilled workforce and retains its youth and talent. Your chamber is partnering with Apprenticeship South Carolina - a division of the S.C. Technical College System - and the Beaufort Regional Chamber to encourage our local businesses to put apprenticeship programs in place and for our local high school and college students to participate. Any industry can benefit from an apprenticeship program, especially the hospitality and healthcare industries. Apprenticeships are more than a job. It’s an on-the-job training program that sets youth up for a successful career, supplies a local workforce, and gives employers tax credits. It’s a win-win-win for students, employers, and the region.

FEATURED: Travel & Tourism Week

TRAVEL + TOURISM WEEK

Celebrated M AY 2 - 8

Your chamber and other travel professionals around the country came together the first week in May for National Travel + Tourism Week, which celebrates the value travel holds for our economy, businesses and personal well-being. Tourism is the cornerstone of our regional economy, responsible for 15 percent of all jobs in Beaufort County and a $1.3 billion economic impact. Our entire community touched tourism by either directly serving visitors by supporting our hospitality partners, or residents, who enjoy the many amenities tourism provides. Our region fared better than other destinations during the pandemic thanks to our wide open spaces, beautiful scenery, and The Path Forward Readiness Plan that helped keep us top-of-mind for safety among returning and new visitors. Americans are ready to travel. A recent study by Destination Analysts found: • • •

66.6% in a ready-to-travel mindset 67.0% have trip plans in the next 3 months 62.5% report they are indeed traveling for leisure this summer

10 LOWCOUNTRY BUSINESS CONNECTION

Hilton Head Island and Bluffton are easier to get to than ever before, thanks to recent air service developments. Southwest Airlines in March began nonstop service between five destinations and the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, half of those passengers are headed to South Carolina. United Airlines begins nonstop services to five destinations - including Ohio - to the Hilton Head Airport this month, while American began nonstop service to Boston in April.

CHAMBER NEWS: Mission/Vision

Planning for the Future: THE DESTINATION MANAGEMENT PLAN Nearly 18 months in the making, Hilton Head Island’s new Destination Management Plan was finalized in 2021, providing a road map for the future to preserve the character and environmental legacy of the community while guiding smart, sustainable growth of our vital tourism industry — the island’s top economic driver. Alongside that plan, the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce has revised and adopted a new mission and vision statement as well as values.

Developed in partnership with tourism consultant MMGY NextFactor and extensive community input, the 10-year plan is designed to enhance resident quality of life, protect the island’s ecosystem, and strengthen the tourism market that drives the area’s economy. The proposed initiatives build on other community efforts already in the works, including the “Our Plan: 2020-2040 Comprehensive Plan for the Town of Hilton Head Island.”

The Destination Management Plan, is a 10-year strategic roadmap designed to enhance resident quality of life and protect the island’s ecosystem in balance with tourism.

Mission: Stimulate the regional economy while enhancing the quality of life for all.

Vision: A welcoming, world-class community embracing nature, culture, and economic vibrancy for residents and visitors.

Values: The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce is a professional, results-driven, and innovative organization for our partners and our community by being ethical, accountable, pragmatic, visionary, and compassionate.
