Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you After having spent too much time in an indoor meeting, I went to the Petrified Sea Gardens to eat lunch outside. I was disappointed to find that it is now closed to the public. This seemed familiar upon arrival, regardless it was disheartening to see it locked up without indication of its extraordinary existence. Rather than a forest with a 490 million-year-old rock surface of fossilized sea bottom, the site looked like a neglected caged animal. Although the gate was locked, I found an opening not far from the entrance, walked in and sat on the ground to eat. The sun was shining, the air was hot, and I was happy to be nourishing myself amongst the tall grass. After eating, I walked towards the stromatolites. Before stepping onto the path, I glanced down to find an all black feather. Adoring feathers, I happily accepted the gift before walking further in. Within two steps, I became overwhelmed with emotion—to the point of tears. Standing still in silence, I stayed with the emotion seeking a message, but it wasn’t long before it dissipated and I felt only my own self again. So, I continued my walk to the bottom of the sea. Eventually returning to my car, I drove up the road and found more fossils and signs of explanation—naturally pulling over to read them. While standing there trying to grasp how there could be something so beautiful and ancient this close to home, a couple from England pulled up. They wondered where the Petrified Sea Gardens were. Embarrassed I explained that they are closed to the public. “But if you don’t mind trespassing, go on in it’s right down the road.” “What is trespassing?” the man asked. So, I just showed him the signs and fossils that were right there. I asked if in England they would have a paved road less than a foot away from such ancient geology. No was his answer. Weeks later, I drove by again and there was a family from Nevada examining the ancient ground. A feeling of disappointment stayed with me after this experience. So, I asked myself what would I prefer to see in regards to The Petrified Sea Gardens? My answer was simple—reverence. Because the lack there of was bringing me down, I had to examine where in my life I lack awe for the ancient. And also, more likely in my case, where do I not appreciate beauty that is so close it seems ordinary. Honestly, my list was too long to share. But coming up with it has made me more aware of the awesomeness of our world. The experience also gave me a better understanding of how old the earth is, and how young I am—or even the human race as we know it is—in comparison. This has deepened my belief that the planet has a wisdom we can only aspire to. What in your life do you overlook because it is too near to realize its magnitude? What would people travelling from England or Nevada come to see in you? Examine the physical aspects, and also your innate characteristics. It may be tempting to say “nothing”. but that would be untrue. We in America have so much. Let us make the choice to have reverence for not only what humans make but also for what already exists naturally, within and without. In peace and awe,

Saratoga P.L.A.N. Stewardship Director, Andy Fyfe, added, “When it opens, the great thing about this Preserve will be that it provides a wooded walk, the chance to see wildlife, and views of Rowland Hollow Creek less than 3 miles from downtown Saratoga Springs. As Saratoga Spring’s urban core grows, we will find such natural areas increasingly important.” Current plans look forward to a late August or early September ribbon cutting.

Meditation volunteers are still needed for the Greater Albany Meditation Project (GAMP). Participants are being asked to commit to meditating 15 minutes a day for two months beginning Martin Luther King day January 21, 2013, while sending positive peaceful intentions to the four local New York counties of Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga, and Rensselaer. The goal is to have 1% of the population, about 8600 people, help make history by adding to an important body of intentional research that suggests how we focus our intentions can influence what we experience. State University of Albany Professor, Dr. John Foldy, and biofeedback specialist, Bethany Gonyea, MS, will be working with a research team that will be measuring changes in social indicators such as a reduction of crime or reduction of fatal car accidents. Because the details of the study are still being defined, meditation leaders are not asked to record their video yet, but just to express their willingness to participate by contacting Bethany Gonyea at

bgonyea@nycap.rr.com. Meditation leaders are also needed to start meditation groups to help increase participation in the study. Please contact Bethany if you would like any support to start a meditation group, or if you are willing to offer other skill sets needed for the study including, videography, technical support, marketing efforts, and recruiting support. You can watch a 5 minute video about the study by visiting www.bethechangemeditation.net.

Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network Upcoming Program The Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network, or SIMEN, has an upcoming program scheduled for Tuesday, September 18 at 6:30 pm at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, 49 Henry St., in the Community Room. The program is free and open to the public. No registration is required. The name of the program is Integrative Medicine for the Holistically Minded Patient, and is a program that takes an inclusive viewpoint on healthcare. We live in a world where aggression and domination seems to be prominent, even in medicine. Conventional medicine seems to solely focus on drugs and pills as the answer to eradicate medical ills; whereas alternative therapies seem to totally disregard or downplay the relevance of properly prescribed medications. However, the need for the safe combination is needed more today than ever! Currently in America, the average number of prescriptions per person is around 13 drugs per year (excluding OTCs). Just 12 years earlier, the average was less than 8 drugs per person. This is a 62 percent increase! Furthermore, the World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that herbal and other plantderived remedies are the most frequently used therapies worldwide. WHO estimates that 4 billion people, 80% of the world population, use herbal preparations for primary healthcare. Thankfully, the emergence of a new model is gaining momentum in which practitioners can unite to form a collaborative and integration between the best of modern and ancient wisdom. This is the definition of a systems biology, patient-centered model. Join presenter Dr. Sarah LoBisco to learn about this integrative and comprehensive medical model and what it would look like. Furthermore, Dr. LoBisco will explain how she would utilize this approach with three program attendees with a current health condition. Specifically, she would like to focus on those with: • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome • Menopausal symptoms • Mood imbalances Sarah LoBisco is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor in Vermont and holds a BA in psychology from SUNY Geneseo. Dr. LoBisco is a speaker on integrative medical topics for medical professionals and item writer for board questions for licensing Naturopathic Physicians. She is currently working toward certification in Functional Medicine from the Institute of Functional Medicine. Getting Friendly with your Flora by Ann Carey Tobin, MD robiotics are beneficial microbes that are supplemented in the diet to augment and support our own established (native) friendly intestinal microbes (flora). There are over 400 strains of native bacteria, as well as a few friendly yeast, that coexist in a symbiotic relationship with their animal hosts. In fact, there is more bacterial DNA in a human than actual human DNA. Some of the more common probiotic strains provided through fermented foods or manufactured supplements include: Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains, such as Lactobacillus GG, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium infantis; Streptococcus thermophilus, and the friendly competitive yeast Saccharomyces boulardii. A human infant is born with a sterile gastrointestinal (GI) tract that quickly colonizes with the flora of his mother and his environment. These beneficial microbes optimize the function of the gut by assisting in digestion of certain sugars, fiber, starches, and proteins, aiding in the absorption of some minerals, and in the production of vitamin K and some B vitamins. They further promote health through competition with pathogenic (unfriendly) bacteria, by strengthening and nourishing the barrier of the GI tract, and as a support for the immune system.

P

Friendly flora take part in our detoxification system, regulation of fat storage, and in the metabolism and recycling of hormones.

Probiotic supplements have an established track record for treating diarrheal illnesses, and with helping to restore friendly bacteria after the administration of antibiotics. There is evidence for benefit in irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, lactose intolerance, yeast infections, and eczema. Clinical research on the effects of supplemented probiotics is now suggesting possible roles for friendly bacteria in decreasing inflammation, regulating blood sugar and cholesterol levels, weight management, supporting cognition and mood, allergic conditions, and perhaps osteoporosis. Probiotics are easily obtained through the consumption of fermented foods. Everyone can benefit from exploring foods such as yogurt with active cultures, kefir, tempeh, miso, kimchee, sauerkraut, lacto-fermented vegetables, natural pickles, umeboshi, kevita, and kombucha. The established flora thrive on a diet of fiber, so cultivate a healthy environment for your own friendly flora by consuming ample amounts of vegetables, fruits, legumes (beans), whole grains, nuts and seeds. The flora also like compounds called polyphenols, examples of which are found in berries, garlic and green tea, among others nutritious foods. Avoid excess sugar, fat and processed foods that tend to support unfriendly flora. Individuals experiencing GI symptoms, such as excess gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, IBS, and food sensitivities; or yeast infections, excess stress, travel or antibiotic use, may benefit from the higher probiotic doses found

Everyone can benefit from exploring foods such as yogurt with active cultures, kefir, tempeh, miso, kimchee, sauerkraut, lacto-fermented vegetables, natural pickles, umeboshi, kevita, and kombucha. in supplements. In addition, as outlined above, there is promising evidence that the role of probiotic supplementation may prove to be even more expansive. In general a symptomatic individual will benefit more from a product that has multiple species of bacteria (such as outlined in the opening paragraph) and a higher colony count, that is CFUs, or colony forming units. It may also be helpful to include a friendly yeast species, such a Saccharomyces boulardii; especially after antibiotics, recurrent yeast infections, or persistent GI symptoms. Individuals who are highly symptomatic with GI issues or who are often sensitive to new products, should begin with lower doses and increase as tolerated. Some products may be augmented with prebiotics to support the well being of the probiotic and help the probiotic establish a foot hold in the GI tract. Examples include fructooligosaccharides (FOS), inulin, guar gum, and lactulose. These are natural sugars found in many healthy foods, such as bananas, artichoke, chicory root, burdock, onions, leeks, fruit, soybeans, sweet potatoes, asparagus, green tea. In those individuals with significant GI symptoms, it is often wise to avoid prebiotics until more GI healing has occurred, as these substances may initially add to gas production. Read the label for proper care of these living organisms. Some

products are shelf stable, but many require refrigeration, and protection from humidity and temperature extremes. Be sure to check the expiration date, and favor a product that guarantees a specific CFU at expiration. Probiotics can be found as powders, capsules, liquids, and in sippy straws for children. As always look for a product that is certified GMP (good manufacturing practices) compliant. In antibiotic administration the general recommendation is to begin a high dose probiotic product immediately and continue for several days to several weeks after completion of the antibiotic. With milder GI symptoms an individual may try to transition off of the supplement to food based probiotics in 2-3 months. Individuals with more serious health conditions may require longer administration of a supplement, with rotation every three months or so to products with other probiotic species. As always, be sure to consult with a health care provider to determine if probiotics are appropriate for your health condition, and how to best proceed. Be well. Spend time with animals without an agenda. While

with any animal—domestic or wild, pay attention to what they are doing. They do not use words for their language, instead behavior is their language. Humans often think we know best, that we don’t listen to what animals are saying through their behavior, “correcting” it instead to what we want. Simply observe them out of curiosity about their nature. As you walk alongside your dog, imagine what it would be like to be on four legs. What’s the feeling of being as close to the ground as your cat is? What is the motive behind digging that hole? Or cawing nonstop? Get involved in making music. For a long, long time people have been making music for ceremony, celebration, communication and connection. It is understood across all languages and cultures, although each location has its own preferences and uses. Music allows humans to become aware in a way verbal language overlooks. It can give expression to feelings that are otherwise difficult to express. Any kind of music will do. Whatever captures your soul and whisks you away from analysis. In addition there are many studies proving that music is healing. Listen to your body. This is an all-body awareness. Which means we need to first have reverence for the body we were born with. Look for ways that allow you to feel appreciation for your body. Exercise, eat well, get body work. Once we have a reverence for our bodies, we will more easily listen to it and believe it when it tells us something by putting a knot in our stomach. Or when we feel the tingles of excitement for what’s coming. This is where animals excel. Especially those that are prey animals, such as horses. Let Go Of What you think you are. Positive and negative labels put limitations on ourselves that we may otherwise outgrow. By dropping any preconceived notions of who we are, we make room for being in the moment, alive and awake to our potential. Labels also put filters on our experience and how we perceive each moment. Without knowing ahead of time what and how we are to interact, we are more capable of being in the moment—available to spontaneity.

It is easy to want to blame our current predicament on technology. However, my guess is that the separation started long before technology existed. Perhaps the beginning was the birth of agriculture, or the start of verbal language. Regardless, my call out is to shift your focused attention that technology and language need and expand it so that it includes all that surrounds you. Become a participant of life, centered in your body while allowing your ancient, wild self to awaken. Know deeply that you are an integral part of the whole—aware that you belong, not because of what you do, but because of what you are. And what you are is alive. Enjoy it. Powerful Phytonutrients Broccoli Targets Cancer and Leaves Healthy Cells Alone

by Dr. Joseph Olejak he journal ‘Molecular Nutrition and Food Research’ reported that sulforaphane, one of the primary phytochemicals in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables that helps them prevent cancer, has been shown for the first time to selectively target and kill cancer cells while leaving normal prostate cells healthy and unaffected.

What was so amazing about this discovery is that it showed that prostate tumor growth was slowed by a diet containing sulforaphane and that “sulforaphane can target cancer cells through multiple chemopreventive mechanisms.” This study showed for the first time that “sulforaphane selectively targets benign hyperplasia cells and cancerous prostate cells while leaving the normal prostate cells unaffected.” What this points to is the innate intelligence in plant compounds; no pharmaceutical or isolated neutraceutical can do that. In a similar study, brassica vegetables (Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli) were associated with decreased risk of colon cancers. The researchers at Oregon State University found that sulforaphane, which is found at fairly high levels in broccoli, cauliflower and other cruciferous vegetables, is an inhibitor of an enzyme that plays a role in whether certain genes are expressed or not, such as tumor suppressor genes. This exciting news comes on the heels of other news about the cruciferous vegetables that show they are proven cancer-fighting foods. One study found teaming up fresh broccoli with a spicy food that contains the enzyme myrosinase significantly enhances each food’s individual cancer-fighting power and ensures that absorption takes place in the upper part of the digestive system where you'll get the maximum health benefit. What are those foods? Radishes, cabbage, arugula, watercress, and Brussels sprouts all boost the benefits found in broccoli. The study noted that you only receive these benefits if the vegetables are eaten raw or lightly steamed. The more broccoli is cooked the more these fragile phytonutrients are damaged. If the broccoli is mush it’s useless nutritionally.

In another study that looked at supplements that just contain sulphoraphane without the other parts of the broccoli plant they discovered that it was not well absorbed and, of course, not well utilized. This points to the enormous value of eating whole foods, and when necessary, use only whole food supplements -- where care is taken to grow plants organically and preserve and use the entire plant in the supplement. When choosing a cruciferous product keep these things in mind. The potential real whole foods and whole food supplements have to nourish our bodies should now be readily apparent. They turn on our genes and amplify our ability to fight cancer. Maybe, as Dr. ServanSchreiber, described in his book Anti-Cancer5 we don’t have cancer genes, but “fast food intolerant genes.” We build an anti-cancer biology with the food we eat three times a day. BTooRead ok DREAMING THE SOUL BACK HOME by Robert Moss “Again and again, in dreams,” writes bestselling author and world-renowned dream explorer Robert Moss in Dreaming the Soul Back Home: Shamanic Dreaming for Healing and Becoming Whole (New World Library, June 15, 2012), “our higher or greater self comes stalking us.” This spirit self comes because, “in the course of any life we are liable to suffer soul loss and because in order to be whole and well, we must find the means of soul recovery.” Dreaming the Soul Back Home explains how we lose connection with vital parts of ourselves during times of transition, hardship, change, and struggle. “On a visceral level, we all know how soul loss comes about,” writes Moss. “We suffer pain or trauma or abuse, we are overwhelmed by grief or guilt or shame, and part of us goes away because it doesn’t want to stay in a world that seems so harsh and cruel.” Dreaming the Soul Back Home explores these five forms of soul loss or disconnection: • Loss of vital energy —You find yourself torpid and listless, reluctant to get out of bed. Your days seem drab and gray and joyless. There is something missing in you, and you try to stuff the hole with sugar or booze. • Loss of younger selves — You have lost younger versions of yourself — the young child with abounding energy and that beautiful imagination, that fine romantic who was hurt or betrayed as a teen, that inner poet or businessman who wanted to make life choices different from the ones you made. • Loss of animal spirits—Indigenous and ancestral shamans know that we are all connected to the world of the animal powers, and that by recognizing and nurturing our relation with animal spirits, we find and follow the natural path of our energies. Yet many of us have lost this primal connection. • Loss of ancestral soul —When we awaken to ancestral soul, we become ready to claim the connection with wisdom-keepers and protectors who can help us to reestablish healthy psychic boundaries and clear out what does not belong with us. • Loss of connection with the Greater Self — Ultimately we can only make peace between the many aspects of our selves, and follow a path of true spiritual evolution, by opening or reopening a direct and conscious connection with the Self on a higher level.

Healing Springs I #63 August—September, 2012

Q&A with Robert Moss Why does the soul have a hard time staying in the body? We suffer pain or abuse, grief or shame, and part of us fids the world so cruel that we want to go away. Soul loss is also caused by wrenching life choices: we decide to leave a relationship, a home, a job, a country, a lifestyle — but part of us resists that choice, sometimes to the point of splitting away and withdrawing its energy from our lives. We also lose soul energy when we give up on our dreams and settle for a life of dull compromise, refusing to trust ourselves to love or to take that creative leap. Where does soul go when it leaves? Sometimes we find that a part of ourselves is stuck in the old place, in Grandma’s house, or in the apartment we shared with our first love. Sometimes a soul part we lost seems to be living in a separate reality, like the land of the Lost Boys in Peter Pan. When we wish ourselves dead, a part of our soul may go far way, as far as a Land of the Dead. Are all aspects of soul recoverable? There are parts that are so damaged we don’t want them back. Sometime they appear burned or charred, dark or addicted. Sometimes our life choices are so radical that a part of ourselves simply cannot be persuaded to share our present situation. For example, my inner businessman is quite disgusted with the choices I have made, and won’t stay close to me unless I make money more of a priority than I am likely to do! What is the first step that someone who would like to experience more soul in their life to take? You do some cleanup, and you ask for help. In the book, as in my retreats, I offer practical guidance for psychic cleansing and release. One of my favorites is a very simple fire releasing in which we cast out any heavy energies that are holding us back and clear a space for vital soul to come back in. It’s very important to remember that we have help available, including from our spiritual allies and our own Greater Self, and that it’s always a good idea to ask for help nicely. What role does addiction play in soul loss? Addiction can be both a cause and an effect of soul loss. Part of our brighter energy may leave us if we fall into habits and company it doesn’t like. When we are missing a part of ourselves, things come in to fill the gap, and we reach for things to fill that gap. From a shamanic viewpoint, addictions are often worsened by spirits of the dead who are seeking to feed their own cravings through a living person. I have never met a true alcoholic, for example, who has not (from my viewpoint) been accompanied by dead drunks. In the book, as in my programs, I offer practical guidance to create healthy psychic boundaries between the living and the deceased. Robert Moss is the author of Dreaming the Soul Back Home and numerous other books about dreaming, shamanism, and imagination. His fascination with the dreamworld began in his childhood in Australia, when he had three near-death experiences and first learned the ways of a traditional dreaming people through his friendship with Aborigines. HEAL WITH

LIGHT

by Lynn Allison esterday I had a migraine and after 20 minutes of light therapy it started to ease up. My friend sprained her wrist and after 20 minutes of light therapy the pain was better and the same happened for a woman who needs a knee replacement soon and was in pain after having been on her feet for 12 hours. How can this be? The use of light in healing has been studied for ages but it is just recently that it is being put to use in therapeutic settings.

Y

Light creates a spectrum, infrared at one end, red next and the colors of the rainbow to purple, then into ultraviolet. SAD, Seasonal Affect Disorder is lessened with exposure to full spectrum light. Ultraviolet light stimulates the production of Vitimin D in the skin tans us and is related to skin cancers.

Infrared has been shown to penetrate the deepest in tissue, releasing nitric oxide, a powerful chemical in the body, responsible for pain relief and relaxation of blood vessels so more nutrients can get to the cells and the toxins are washed away easier. In the case of the sprained wrist, the infrared LED lights in the pad increased her nitric oxide. They also have a thermogenic effect – feeling of warm. The discovery of nitric oxide provided the researchers with the Nobel Peace Prize in the late 90’s. Supplements have been created but the benefits only seem to occur with the body’s own production of nitric oxide. Some recent studies with blue LED light therapy are showing that blue light exposure kills bacteria, virus and even MRSA. Ellis Hospital is using a blue light emitting robot to disinfect their rooms. You may have seen ads for acne treatments using blue light therapy. RPI in Troy did a study in 2006 with teens to reset their biologic clock so they were more alert in the morning and went to bed earlier. The blue light can reset your circadian rhythm so help with jet lag, insomnia and shift work. Red LED light was used in a study in 2003 by NASA to see if it could decrease the side effects of cancer treatments and encourage plant growth in space. In 2008, it was found that red LED lights increased mitochondrial function at a cellular level. This means more energy, healthier cells, memory and mood boosts. Red light works as well as NSAIDS and COX 2 inhibitors in pain and inflammation reduction with no side effects.

A study of daily sessions for 9 weeks vastly reduced wrinkles and fine lines and increased collagen production and cell rejuvenation. Look around, you will see more and more about light therapy. I use a machine that combines infrared, red and blue LED lights in my office. I have also found instructions on how to convert your tanning bed into a red light bed for wrinkle reduction. St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany is promoting Anodyne therapy which is infrared. Even infomercials with Robert Wagner are promoting lights.

Expressing YOUR Creativity!

by Carol Bollinger Green o you notice moments when a grand gesture of red is close to the surface? Are there times when you sense a clear wash of blue, a decisive black line, maybe faint spots of green? Would you like to express your creativity freely, without observing a subject or having something in mind? With simple materials, drawing and painting intuitively can be playful, meditative, insightful, healing. By releasing judgements, there is discovery, and the spontaneity of seeing what unfolds. Watercolors, tempera paints, oil pastels, and colored pencil sticks are easy to use, indoors and out, on many kinds of papers.

D

Try engaging your physical body first, with breathing, stretching, walking, moving. Invite your inner wonder to guide your gesture, hand or brush, and color selection. Start just where you are, focusing on the painting process instead of working toward a product. Enjoy exploring, without expectations! Sharing the experience with a friend or small group supports staying present and opening to possibilities. Both first-time painters and practicing artists can invite their unique voices to speak. No previous experience is needed. Whether the front of a refrigerator, the back of a closet door, the shade of a summer tree, where would you make space for your creativity to emerge? Carol Bollinger Green facilitates Intuitive Painting Workshops at SoulSpace in Greenwich, NY, as well as at The Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy, NY. She offers drawing and watercolor classes at both ACCR and Hudson Valley Community College. Her background includes: BFA in Illustration, MA in Painting and Drawing, and training in intuitive process painting. Following YOUR

Inner Voice by Lisa Bruchac ollowing your inner voice is essential to living your life at its highest potential. It’s amazing how many times I have forgotten this and continually tried fitting a square peg into a round hole. I have put so much effort into changing something in my life and realized later why it was so difficult and didn’t work out the way I had intended. I have had countless experiences that have taught me that when I listen closely to my inner voice, I find that I am on the right path at the right moment and life just moves along smoothly with seemingly little effort on my part.

F

Everyone identifies with their inner knowing in different ways. Some may feel a sensation in their stomach, “see” images in the form of pictures or symbols or hear a voice that is not necessarily coming from outside of them or inside their head. Following my “gut instinct”- a term many are familiar with- or inner voice is something that I began doing when I was very young without even realizing it. I have always felt a sensation in my lower stomach if I was not listening. There have been times that I have gotten an actual “punch” in my stomach if I was about to do something that went against my true nature. When I was in my early twenties, I started dating someone who I had an immediate physical attraction to. One week later, I felt a sick, gut-wrenching ache in my lower belly. I instinctively knew this feeling was a warning that all was not right with this relationship. But I ignored the warning and forged ahead. Four years later and still in the same relationship, I remember saying to myself that I could marry him. This time the “punch” to my gut was so strong I literally bent over and held my stomach. This time I knew I had to listen.

Sometimes we don’t listen because we have more to learn. How amazing would life be if we listened the first time and followed our true path, thus eliminating the drama and heartache? It requires courage to listen. Many problems that people face in life have to do with not listening to what their inner voice is telling them. These same problems can be solved by following that inner knowing. We as spiritual beings in human form have access to this information at all times. A cousin of mine, a beautiful young woman in her thirties, made a decision a few years ago to live with her then boyfriend following an eight month separation caused by his drug addiction. She told me she knew it wasn’t the right decision, but she didn’t have the courage at that time to follow the nagging inner voice. He sub-

sequently moved in, his addiction got worse and less than a year later (and many tearful nights) she struggled to kick him out. There are countless stories about couples who get married and subsequently divorce years later who have said, “I knew it wasn’t right before we got married”. What prevents people from listening to this inner knowing? What are we afraid of? Trusting ourselves is the first step to hearing the message and knowing we can handle whatever comes our way. It comes from a deep sense of trust within to know there is a process and it will lead you to where you need to be.

About ten years ago, I woke in the middle of the night with a start and sat bolt upright. I heard a voice say to me “Trust the process”. At the time, I was struggling with a decision of whether or not to end a six year relationship. I was scared because I was in my midthirties and my fear was about giving up my dream of getting married and having a family. That night I vowed to listen to that voice and within a couple of weeks, I let go of the relationship. Looking back, I know it was the best decision for both of us although it was difficult at the time. I am now happily married to the love of my life and we have a beautiful daughter together. To begin to learn how to listen and follow your own inner voice, I have included three simple ideas:

Become silent for at least five minutes daily. It is in this space that you’ll be more apt to hear your own inner messages and begin to recognize the signs that are unique to you. Since initially your instincts could be subtle signs, you’ll need to sit quietly to become familiar with your own. Eventually with practice, you’ll be able to hear your inner voice when you are going about your daily life.

2

Try following a message you get, however subtle and see where it takes you. At first, try this with smaller, daily decisions—such as where to eat when deciding on a restaurant. See what comes up spontaneously without any thought. Follow it and notice what happens.

3

If faced with a decision that feels heavy for you, try coming up with several options and then imagine each one separately. As you imagine each one, notice how you feel and where you get the sensation. Write these feelings down as you go through each scenario. Which makes you feel the best? Go with that one. Sometimes you won’t know the why behind the choice right away, but you will probably be enlightened at an unexpected time. Once you become familiar with your own inner voice or knowing take the chance and start following the messages more consistently. You’ll find that life will be easier and lighter and probably more joyful. When you are living life on your true path, the joy will emanate from you. Lisa Bruchac is a life coach who works with women who are seeking more in life and have a strong desire and commitment to shift gears, dust off that long forgotten dream and make the choices necessary to live the life they have always imagined. Question: Is there any procedure or program that any of you offer to alleviate a problem with lymph-edema? Editor’s Note: As the editor of this column, sometimes it is better to let stand the more valued commentaries of colleagues. In this case, I have chosen to do just that. I have used Jin Shin Jutsu to alleviate symptoms, but my experience with this condition has led me to refer this condition to the skills enumerated by by my two colleagues here. Oriental Medicine; Gregg St Clair Lymphedema is fluid retention and tissue swelling usually due to a compromised lymphatic system. In the spaces between tissue

(interstitial) fluids become trapped and are not removed as efficiently as they could leading to lymphatic obstruction and edema. This can lead to gross swelling of the limbs, elephantitits and even death. When you consider the lymphatic system also transports white blood cells, our body's immunity, the benefits of a well functioning lymph system become apparent. Western treatment would include compression for simple lymphedema, drainage for moderate and possibly even lymph vessel grafting for severe. If you are looking for a way to keep a compromised immune system working at it’s best, I believe acupuncture holds one of the safest and most effective alternatives. In Chinese Medicine everything we talk about has to do with flow. Disease occurs when things stop flowing. It could be stagnation of blood, lymph or pressure on a nerve leading to things like pain, heart attack, stroke or even cancer. When I do acupuncture, the sterile needles create a flow of blood, white blood cells and endorphins to the site. As far as lymphedema is concerned, this helps to flush out the area and creates an immune response to help facilitate healing. I once had a 70 year old man come to me with lymphedema and cellulitis, which is an infection in the cells. It was in both legs, they were red, hot to the touch and swollen up like balloons. He had already undergone two courses of powerful antibiotics, and when he came to me the next step his doctors were considering was amputating his legs. He continued on his antibiotics and had acupuncture and within four visits his legs were almost normal

Chiropractor; Lynn Allison Lymph-edema is retention of fluid causing an enlargement of an extremity or body area. It is common post surgery especially when lymph nodes have been removed. Breast cancer surgery often requires the removal of nodes in the armpit so lymph edema of the arm is common. Lymph is a fluid from out blood that delivers nutrients to cells and washes away waste from the cell. The waste is taken to smaller lymph nodes, then to larger nodes to end up deposited in the thoracic ducts to be eliminated by the kidney or colon. Cells’ health depends on functional lymph. Lymph edema is unsightly and uncomfortable and is detrimental to the tissues. I personally experienced a mild case post shoulder surgery where no nodes were removed but nodes in my feet congested to the point where I wore an entire shoe size larger. I use Avalon light therapy. A combo of red, infrared and blue LED light thins the lymph and relaxes the blood vessels allowing the lymph to return to the thoracic duct and deliver nutrients to the cells in the area. It takes repeated sessions and may become a daily therapy. Low level light therapy has been shown to make a difference in lymph removal as well as releasing the water trapped by collagen in scar tissue. When the scar tissue is softened, the lymph drainage can improve.

Unwind... let healing begin.

Lymph movement occurs best with light surface massage. I use Cranial Sacral therapy, light touch bodywork, which seems to aid in lymph removal. I worked with one woman as she went through breast cancer surgery and chemo with the approval of her surgeon to optimize the maintenance of normal lymph function. She also changed her diet to organic vegan and lost weight. She never experienced edema. It is best to experiment with the technique and practitioner and to use compression or wrapping to stimulate the body into remembering how to function at its best. Lynn Allison DC has practiced in the Capital Region since 1991 and currently is in Saratoga. A Palmer graduate, she primarily uses Cranial Sacral therapy in treatment, combined with Avalon LED light therapy, NOT, chiropractic, muscle therapy and nutritional consulting as needed. She can be contacted at knotdr@juno.com or 268-9542.

Homebirth Story by Trisha Millier n October of 2011 my husband Drew and I found out we were expecting our first child. We were over the moon with excitement and anticipation of our new arrival and, like many soonto-be new parents, completely clueless about pregnancy and everything that follows. But we were avid readers and confident that the usual literature like “What To Expect When You’re Expecting” would help guide us on our journey into parenthood.

Healing Springs I #63 August—September, 2012

By November it was time for our first prenatal appointment with my obgyn whose practice included five doctors and a midwife. We were looking forward to the visit. For all our reading we still felt unprepared. We dutifully wrote our list of questions and sketched out a birth plan as suggested by several books. We were anxious to go over everything in detail with our obstetrician however, the friendly, nurturing visit that we had anticipated was far from the impersonal, hurried reality of what transpired. We expected to see my doctor’s familiar face upon entering the exam room; the face I saw faithfully for exams over the previous 5 years. Instead, we were greeted by another doctor. She explained that prior to delivery I would have to be seen by each member of the practice as any one could be the attending physician on my due date. We were confused but eager to go over our questions all the same. Before I could reach into my purse for our list, Drew was handed three envelopes containing, “...all the information you will need throughout your pregnancy and the answers to any questions you can possibly come up with.” We weren’t thrilled with this arrangement. I pulled out our birth plan and then the doctor laughed. She informed us that a birth plan was not only unnecessary but unlikely to be honored in the hospital. She went on to tell us that because I was in my early thirties and not at ideal weight, my pregnancy was considered geriatric and high risk. She suggested making an appointment with an anesthesiologist for a trial intubation for what was to be my scheduled cesarian. Fifteen minutes after we entered that exam room the doctor was gone and we were scared. Geriatric? High risk? Cesarian? Did we have to accept this as the only method of care? Talking with family and friends only reinforced that we would have to scrap the “perfect pregnancy” picture that was painted in our minds and settle for the medical management model like everyone else.

She had a homebirth. I'll admit that the idea of giving birth at home in 2012 seemed silly at first. It conjured up images of old world women lying helpless in the dark while their midwives stood by idly. That said, our friend described the model of care that we wanted. We wanted a trained professional who was knowledgeable about pregnancy, labor, and birth. We wanted a safe and intervention-free delivery. We wanted our baby to be healthy and to enter this world peacefully. After more research and watching documentaries like “The Business of Being Born and Pregnant In America, our minds were made up; we wanted a midwife and a we wanted a homebirth.

On May 21st at 6:30am my water broke, three weeks early. The birthing tub hadn't been picked up. The towels and newborn blankets weren't yet washed. The bed in our guestroom hadn't been made. But I wasn't nervous or anxious. I quietly labored with my dog, my husband, mother in law, and my midwives at my side. I walked around our living room. I sat in our bathtub and shower. I rocked back and forth on a birthing-ball while my husband rubbed my back. I even napped. At seven o'clock that evening, I gave birth to our beautiful, healthy baby girl, intervention free. Pam Lunz Medina n open heart chakra is one that experiences deep devotion, a divine love. It loves for love’s sake alone, without expecting reciprocation. This devotion, or Bhakti love, in yoga, is expressed as complete dedication and admiration. It may be felt towards a lover, a deity, a parent, a teacher, a child, or even the planet. You experience an inner state of peace and harmony, are filled with self adoration, and this complete acceptance radiates into the hearts of others. You have a joyful and compassionate nature. You understand that the love you experience is one love, expanding out into everything in the universe. Knowing this, you put your heart into everything you do. You are open to welcoming new people into your heart. You walk with your heart center wide open to the world. You let your heart rule and are receptive to touch. You allow the flow of life to breeze through you, uninhibited by fear. This liberty is demonstrated in fullness of breath. Childhood Obesity by Sarah A LoBisco, ND t may appear as if we are living longer, but our long-term quality of life is poorer and overall happiness is decreasing. There is a high cost of our current American obesity epidemic on our overall health and quality of life. Our fast paced, nutrient poor lifestyles are decreasing self-esteem while increasing uncontrollable waistlines, but there is more to the picture than weight control with our diet. Our overfed, yet malnourished, society is also creating negative health effects on our bodies and brains. Furthermore, these downstream ill effects cause financial strain to our health system rob our future leaders of creative and intelligent working minds.

The result of our processed and fast food society has created a nation of children brains’ which are starving. They are less able to think abstractly and complete sentences beyond a tweet. Furthermore, they are now dying from diseases that were typically only affected adults. According to a Report by the Worldwatch Institute: And hunger destroys would-be Einsteins and Gandhis in childhood, while productivity losses among those who reach adulthood are widespread. ..

…hungry women are less able to provide for their families and to properly nourish their own bodies during pregnancy, which often results in lifelong impairment for their children and a consequent loss of personal and community potential. …So whether the problem stems from hunger or from overeating, whether it occurs in poor countries or rich ones, malnutrition is bound to skew and slow a country’s development. …. Therefore, eating “cheap” isn’t saving us money in the long run. Dr. Hyman discusses the costs beyond financial of “cheap” junk food on our future generation: Never before in human history have we seen “adult onset” or type 2 diabetes in children. There has been an over 1,000% increase in type 2 diabetes in children over the last two decades. Fifteen years ago 3% of new cases of diabetes in children were type 2 diabetes. Now it is 50%. Forty percent of children are now overweight and 2 million are morbidly obese, exceeding the 99th percentile for weight. Scientists say that we have only 3,600 cases of type 2 diabetes in children. Nonsense. Almost all of those 2 million morbidly obese kids have either pre-diabetes or diabetes or what we should call “diabesity”. In adults

25% of diabetics and 90% of pre-diabetics are not diagnosed. In children most of the cases are missed.” A study published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine found that medications don’t work and general lifestyle instruction isn’t much help either to treat type 2 diabetes in children. And the disease is more rapidly progressive and aggressive in children. Kids who haven’t even learned to swallow a pill are now facing giving themselves daily insulin injections. Poor and minority kids are more heavily afflicted. Thankfully, modern medicine is beginning to see the light of changing our food quality and lifestyle choices. In other words, chasing genes as the cause of diseases and using powerful pills with dangerous side-effects is not the best first line of defense, economically or medicinally. Sure, our genes play a role in our risk factors for diseases, but not in their manifestation. We need to shift to retraining our health experts on the real lifestyle factors that affect obesity rates. A recent article in Medscape explains: When it comes to predicting the risk for common diseases, including cancer, genome sequencing is not a magic bullet. It might be a valuable tool for people with a strong family history of a disease, but not for the vast majority of people, researchers report. Genomic sequencing will never be a crystal ball that can reliably predict future health issues, explained researcher Bert Vogelstein, MD, Clayton Professor of Oncology and Pathology at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center in Baltimore, Maryland. "It cannot substitute for conventional risk-management strategies, including routine check-ups and lifestyle optimization," he said at a press briefing here at the American Association for Cancer Research 103rd Annual Meeting. Dr. Vogelstein was summarizing the results of a study presented at the meeting and simultaneously published online April 2 in Science Translational Medicine. Don’t get me wrong, we need medication when the issue is keeping people alive, but not as the main treatment in health and quality of life care. Rather, prescriptions should be used appropriately for the right conditions, not in replacement of poor lifestyle choices. In other words, using a statin medication for a man to prevent a secondary heart attack, while addressing his lifestyle risk factors makes sense; however, it doesn’t make sense to give the same man a pill for diabetes and reflux as he continues to chow down on Twinkies, corn dogs, and soda-pop. We should build our foundation on a healthy diet and lifestyle modification. Dr. Hyman continues: Do we really think we can medicate our way out of a bad diet? Can we really overcome the 54 gallons of soda consumed every year by the average American, or the 34 teaspoons of sugar consumed DAILY by the average child in America with a medication, or some handouts on eating better? One of the drugs used in the study, Avandia, has been responsible for over 200,000 deaths from heart attacks since it was introduced in 1999. The Food and

Drug Administration has restricted its use. Should we be using this in children? This is pharmageddon. One Answer: Eating at Home (Dr. Hyman): Research shows that children who have regular meals with their parents do better in every way, from better grades, to healthier relationships, to staying out of trouble. They are 42 percent less likely to drink, 50 percent less likely to smoke and 66 percent less like to smoke marijuana. Regular family dinners protect girls from bulimia, anorexia, and diet pills. Family dinners also reduce the incidence of childhood obesity. In a study on household routines and obesity in US pre-school aged children, it was shown that kids as young as four have a lower risk of obesity if they eat regular family dinners, have enough sleep, and don’t watch TV on weekdays. We complain of not having enough time to cook, but Americans spend more time watching cooking on the Food Network, than actually preparing their own meals. In his series Food Revolution, Jamie Oliver showed us how we have raised a generation of Americans who can’t recognize a single vegetable or fruit, and don’t know how to cook. A recent meta-analysis in Pediatrics confirmed these results and how taking time for our children, with food and love, saves their health: CONCLUSIONS: Educational and public health initiatives aimed at promoting shared family mealtimes may improve nutritional health of children and adolescents. Clinicians may advise their patients about the benefits of sharing 3 or more family mealtimes per week; benefits include a reduction in the odds for overweight (12%), eating unhealthy foods (20%), and disordered eating (35%) and an increase in the odds for eating healthy foods (24%). I love this article, because it discusses not highlighting the health benefits of food, but using it a means of bonding, community, and social support. Investing in healthy foods in the long run will cut our spending and increase our quality of life. We can take back our children!
