M E E T G R A C E I N N AT U R E U N L I M I T E D : Founded by longtime owner and “mother” of Yoga Mandali, Karen Score, Grace in Nature was birthed out of a love for culture, connection, and compassion. After serving the yoga community for 12+ years, Karen felt a call to be of service to the larger community by facilitating travel opportunities that share her love of various cultural connections and diversity. Her philosophy is that Yoga is so much more than just the practice of asana; it’s about the breath, and the time and space to allow the mind to become quiet. It’s fresh air, nature, being with like-minded people, enjoying good food, sharing laughter, and taking adventures…something everyone can do and experience! Hence, Grace in Nature was born, with a mission to offer consciously curated travel experiences all across the world with leaders who have a particular passion for a place, its culture, people, landscape and local cuisine.

Corner Publisher’s The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you. There was a decision I needed to make. It would probably seem inconsequential to others, but was a big deal to me—move or not move my horse. Tom is happy where he is, so moving isn’t necessary, yet maybe it’s time for us both to have some new scenery. So, I asked Life to help me make the decision in a way that I’d understand. With trust in my heart, I went to the potential new location. I was walking in the field there and came across 4 deer. They ran a few steps then stopped, looked up and we stared each other in the eyes for quite a while until I moved on. There are tons of places to check on the symbolism of animals, but before the internet I used Ted Andrews’ “Animal Speak” and still do use it as my dictionary. In this book it says deer represent gentle new adventures. I was all in for that, and figured seeing them was a good sign for moving. Then while walking back towards my car, a red fox ran in front of me from right to left. “Animal Speak” says the fox represents magic. More energies I welcome and why I put one on the cover. When I arrived home and stepped out of the garage, I looked up to find 4 deer again staring at me. The others were at the farm and these were at my house. Again, seemingly like a good sign. The next day, still questioning, I got in my car and maybe 50 feet from the driveway noticed branches falling from a tree even though the wind was quiet. I’m Nature-aware enough to know that means to look up and see what is causing the falling branches. Doing so, I was treated with the sight of an adorable porcupine sititng far out on a limb eating the budding leaves. “Animal Speak’ says that Porcupines symbolize a new sense of wonder. Later that day, a neighbor sent a night photo of a red fox family, two parents and two kits, living behind our wood shed. Another confirmation that choice of moving Tom is neither right nor wrong, but will bring forth some sense of magical adventure or fun. The next morning, I was sitting on the front porch drinking coffee and a Blue Jay in our apple tree caught my attention. I quietly watched as this bird seemed to struggle in breaking off ends of branches. Another Blue Jay flew up and they worked together on the same goal. Eventually flying off with twigs in their beaks, as a male cardinal flew into the apple tree. I later looked it up to find out that Blue Jays couples break branches laboriously to build their nest. That I was witnessing them do it to make their new home felt like more messages to suggest moving Tom would have a beneficial result. I gave my notice to the current barn that day. Time will tell if the outcome will follow my understanding of the messages. Now as I write, I’m sitting outside in the sun, a hawk flies overhead with its piercing scream. Within seconds two crows come through chasing off a single Raven. All while a cardinal, probably the same one that ‘chased’ off the Blue Jays, is repeating his call and seemingly waiting for a response from his girl. Why tell you all this? First of all, because no matter what spiritual practices I learn, observing the beings that still live in their natural state feel the most Divine to me. Also, to illustrate how to ask for guidance and allow Life to show you potential answers. For me, it comes through animal sightings because that is how I want to see it. For you, it may come through an article, a conversation or perhaps when you stop thinking about it and suddenly know the answer in your bones. You come up with the method for the how Life converses and it will respond. There needs to be a frame of reference you agree upon, again for me it’s the animals and any intuitive understandings that come to me in a particular situation. The other point I want to make, is that regardless of what signs you see, “voices” you hear or things you know, YOU have to make the decision or take the actions yourself. The animals in my case, were not there to actually make the decision for me. They more than likely didn’t even notice my presence and doubtfully knew I was looking to them for help making a decision. And yet, because we are all symbiotically connected, their presence was there at perfect timing to bring me some clarity. UPDATE: Tom moved yesterday and everything went smoothly so far. Tom doesn’t like trailers and on some occations has taken hours getting on, yesterday it was 15 mintues. The horses he will be living with were already on the trailer and may have helped his decision. When we got to the new place, he ran and explored for over an hour calling to see who was around to answer. There was a red tailed hawk soaring oeverhead while he did so. He liked my compnay but didn’t feel needy for me as he has some other moves. This morning I got a text that all three boys went out together without incident. All and all, the wild ones spoke the truth and I can’t help wondering how much they communicated with the horses ahead of time. I did my best letting them all know what was going as well, even asking for help for Tom from the two new guys. Thanks to all it seems to have worked. Take that as your message to speak to the Universe, Divine, Wild Ones, Life—whatever you want to call it— knowing it listens and responds although not always as obviously as in this story.

Among those appropriately awarded during Earth Week were Saratoga PLAN and Open Space Institute (OSI). The Land Trust Alliance presented Saratoga PLAN with two grants. OSI received a grant for the Palmertown Range project, which is a collaborative project with Saratoga PLAN. A Capacity and Excellence Grant was awarded to Saratoga PLAN’s “New Technology for Expanding Horizons” project for $27,800. The grant will provide a comprehensive IT upgrade for constituent data, office systems, and stewardship mapping systems in order to increase capacity, improve productivity, and security, and improve stewardship of PLAN’s conserved properties. Another Capacity and Excellence Grant was awarded for Saratoga PLAN’s “Taking a Stand: Defending our Eastern Hemlocks from an Invasive Forest Pest” project for $3,550. This grant will support a graduate student intern to identify priority hemlock stands on PLAN lands using satellite infrared imagery, and develop a management and treatment plan for safeguarding these stands from impacts of invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, an insect pest threatening this iconic and ecologically important species prominent in northern forests. The Lake George Land Conservancy, facing a similar threat in its watershed, is generously contributing a $500 match to the project. PLAN's partner organization, Open Space Institute, was also

awarded a Conservation Catalyst Grant for the “Southern Palmertown Conservation/Recreation Plan Implementation” project for $50,000, enabling the two organizations to bring on a consultant to coordinate and implement the recently completed Southern Palmertown Conservation and Recreation Strategy, with four local towns, trail user groups, businesses that cater to outdoor recreationists, loggers and other forestry-dependent businesses, and landowners. The Coordinator will facilitate community-wide engagement and ensure regional adoption of recommendations in the Strategy, available online at saratogaplan.org. All three projects are supported with funding from the New York State Conservation Partnership Program (NYSCPP) and New York’s Environmental Protection Fund. The NYSCPP is administered by the Land Trust Alliance, in coordination with the State Department of Environmental Conservation. Saratoga PLAN executive director Maria Trabka said, “We are thrilled to have been granted opportunities to make strides towards conserving and stewarding land for all in Saratoga County. These grants from the Land Trust Alliance and NYS Department of Environmental Conservation make it possible to not only conserve and steward more land but also to engage more people in conserving the places they love. Conservation is so important to our physical and mental health, our economic prosperity, and the quality of our lives.” Saratoga PLAN preserves the rural character, natural habitats, and scenic beauty of Saratoga County so that these irreplaceable assets are accessible to all and survive for future generations. To date, the organization has protected over 7,000 acres of land and 200 miles of trails. Healing Springs I #103 I May/June ‘19

Art & Meditation, Featuring the Work of Ritvik Sharma by Hillary Raimo In my work I have discovered art as a medium to convey beauty. The artists way offers a path into other perspectives, creative manifestation, and releases the burdens of everyday life. Transforming all of our worries into a statement of beautification. Appreciating an artist’s work is a bit like falling in love. When a piece of work reaches my deeper sensibilities I take note, and this is the case with Ritvik Sharma’s watercolors. Ritvik’s work focuses on scenes from the Capital Region. Spanning from iconic locations such as Albany’s capital landscape, to the notorious vast spanning countryside scenes of upstate New York. As a child, the impressionist painters of Europe, especially drawn to Monet and Renoir, inspired Ritvik. He seeks to invoke a memory in his work. His simplification of subject matter invites a haunting longing of reminiscence. With a focus on brushstrokes, Sharma’s work engages the viewer and encourages the transcendence of subject matter in a loose and unique style. 8

Healing Springs I #103 I May/June ‘19

When I first experienced Sharma’s work I was a bit surprised at how deeply it affected me. Recognizing the locations I did reminisce as my memories of each location came forward. His loose style of painting allowed my mind to fill in the blanks of people, sounds and moments. He accomplishes his intention and this is a key component in manifestation. Being an artist is much like being a spiritualist, or writing a book. With a distinct beginning, middle and end, the path of creating is the same. I can tell when an artist is committed to their work and when they are inspired and happy. The beauty that emanates from an artist’s work often reflects an artist’s relationship with creative energy and whether it is blocked or open. I compare it to meditation. Creative energy comes from the ability to settle your mind. That means no thoughts. Clearing the creative field of debris. Once this field has settled, and you are grounded in that sense of no thought. You think one thought. Being able to choose that thought takes practice. Just like painting. Meditation is a worthy practice and something to consider adding into your daily life.

Ritvik’s watercolors remind me of a creative space, an inner landscape that manifests, a stage of creation where things are just beginning to take form. The details are slightly blurred and exist only as well as your imagination can create them. His work is a meditation in color form. Ritvik will be teaching his first plein air workshop this June “Local Scenes of Altamont”. To see more of his work or to register for his workshops visit his website RitvikWatercolors.com Hillary Raimo is President of the Bethlehem Art Association, promoting art since 1966. Author of three books, Hillary spent thirteen years on the radio as a host of her own show. An award winning artist, curator and collector she seeks to highlight local artists in the New York Upstate Capital Region area. She hopes to encourage a deeper look into creative energy as a force and how everyone can embrace his or her inner landscapes as inspirational liberation.

Can Vitamin D Prevent Breast Cancer? What is your D level? by Particia Bowden-Luccardi CTT,CNMT Summer is here and you think your vitamin D levels will be adequate? Think again. Functional Medicine guru Dr. Mark Hyman says “Unless you live 20 minutes south of Atlanta, and you are outside totally naked for 15 minutes a day in the sun, you need vitamin D.” African Americans and other dark-skinned people and those living in northern latitudes make significantly less vitamin D than other groups; the darker your skin is, the less likely it is that you will produce adequate vitamin D levels from sun exposure alone. It is important to get vitamin D3 through diet, sunlight, or supplements every day because when vitamin D is sent directly to the body tissue it is only active for 24 hours. To boost our immune system and ward off cancer-we need new input every day. Vitamin D impacts our bones, regulates calcium and strengthens our immune system. Researchers have found vitamin D directly affects the cells in the breast. Vitamin D influences virtually every cell in your body and is one of nature’s most potent cancer fighters.. Inside almost every cell in the body is a vitamin D receptor (VDR). A VDR is a protein that controls the expression of genes. The vitamin D in our blood enters breast cells, binds to the VDRs, and triggers positive change, Vitamin D is also able to enter cancer cells and trigger natural cell death preventing, slowing or even stopping cancer growth There have been many studies on vitamin D and breast cancer that demonstrate a 50-80% lower risk of breast cancer diagnosis for women with serum levels > 40 ng/ml versus levels of 25 ng/ml or lower.

Healing Springs Journal 10

Healing Springs I #103 I May/June ‘19

Dr. Cedric F. Garland, professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, “As long as vitamin D receptors are present, tumor growth is prevented and kept from expanding its blood supply. Vitamin D receptors are not lost until a tumor is very advanced. This is the reason for better survival in patients whose vitamin D blood levels are high.”

“Vitamin D impacts our bones, regulates calcium and strengthens our immune system. Researchers have found vitamin D directly affects the cells in the breast. Vitamin D influences virtually every cell in your body and is one of nature’s most potent cancer fighters..” Researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington DC discovered a connection between high vitamin D intake and a reduced risk of breast cancer. These findings presented at the American Association for Cancer Research, revealed that increased dosage of the sunshine vitamin were linked to 75% reduction in overall cancer growth and 50% reduction in tumor cases among those already having the disease. Vitamin D supplementation helped control the development and growth of breast cancer, especially with estrogen – sensitive breast cancer.

Rochester Medical Center examined vitamin D levels in 155 breast cancer patients in the months before and after surgery. They found suboptimal levels to be highly predictive of the biological markers associated with more aggressive tumors. The average level in patients with breast cancer in the United States is 17 ng/ml. The most important factor is your vitamin D serum level is optimal to help prevent a wide variety of diseases and health ailments. Vitamin D levels need to be between 50 and 70 ng/ml year round. According to the recent findings from D*Action study, adults need about 8,000IU’s of D3 per day to get serum levels above 40 ng/ml If you take high doses of oral vitamin D3 supplements, you may also need to increase your vitamin K2 intake, as vitamin D increases the need for K2 to function properly, helping you absorb calcium. There is new evidence that vitamin K2 directs the calcium to your skeleton, while preventing it from being deposited where you don't want it. Only a blood test can check vitamin D levels. Insurance pays for D testing. If you are without insurance, there are options online of independent labs that will test. Enjoy the sun and make sure your sun screen, when you use it, is natural. Do regular breast cancer screening with thermography and ultrasound and take your vitamin D! Inner Wisdom Diet

Tap into the wisdom of your body and soul for better health and well-being When we eat processed foods, we are missing the nutrients from their whole food counterparts. Additonally, we’re consuming sugar and other additives we’d never include if we were cooking something similar at home. Thus, processed foods are by definition not as healthy as whole foods, even if the ingredients are organic or were whole grains at some point in their existence.

Which Foods are Healthy? by Rachel Kurtz At an intuitive level, we know what’s good for our bodies and overall well-being. Our common sense and our five senses tell us we need healthy food. Yet why do we often ignore the wise inner voice that says, “Buy this kale instead of that cookie”?

How our Diet isn’t Serving Us One reason we don’t always eat healthfully is the packaged foods industry wants to confuse us about what constitutes a healthy food. Labels yell out “organic,” “made with whole grains,” “non-gmo,” or “low carb.” They sound healthy. But look at those packages more carefully. How many grams of added sugars? How far away is this product from the whole food of its pre-history? What preservatives, colors, and flavors are added to supposedly healthful food?

What Makes a Food Healthy or Unhealthy? My definition of a healthy food: A food that provides a substantial amount of the vital nutrients our bodies need to thrive and doesn’t contain substances that cause poor health. 12

Healing Springs I #103 I May/June ‘19

For most people (without certain diseases of the bowel), a healthy diet includes a lot of unprocessed (or minimally processed) plant-based foods, especially non-starchy veggies, nuts and fruit. Local food (or home grown) is the freshest and tends to retain the most nutrients. A healthy diet also includes high quality protein and healthy fat. Which proteins and which fats? That depends on your gut biome (does dairy or gluten agree with you?) and your beliefs about food (do you want to eat a vegetarian diet?). Learn to listen to your gut, noticing the signals that are coming from your inner world of bacteria, and what your gut-instinct tells you about what foods are good for you.

How to Truly Listen to Your Gut The key is to pay attention. Keep a food journal that not only records what you ate, how much and when, but also includes: how you feel physically and emotionally before and after eating certain foods. Use the diary as a tool to find patterns of foods that agree with you and disagree with you. Notice the thoughts and feelings various foods bring up and the emotions that might cause you to gravitate towards (crave?) certain foods. Be gentle and playful with this process of experimentation and

Don’t add more stress to your diet as you become more aware of what you’re eating. Stress hormones interfere with your digestion and slow your metabolism. Instead, slow down to notice your food and enjoy the discovery process.

Craving or Nutritional Need? How can you tell if you are craving a food because it’s good for you or you want it because your body needs some nutrient it contains? If you listen closely you can tease apart these feelings. Craving comes from withdrawal of a substance you are physically and/or emotionally addicted to. The sensation of needing comes in with a vengeance from the reward pathway in your brain which might cry, give me sugar now! If you eat the food, however, you will only crave even more. Cravings often follow emotional upset and usually are for unhealthy foods that have addictive substances such as sugar and caffeine. Further, when sugar is combined with fat it becomes that much more likely to form a craving. Nutritional needs are quieter. A big clue is that once you fulfill your nutritional needs, you feel vibrant, alive, and content. You can also infer your nutritional needs using your intellect—have you eaten enough healthy plant foods, proteins, and fats? What nutrients are you low on today?

can opt out of unhealthy packaged food culture that you know in your gut is not good for you. Listen to your inner wisdom and opt in to a healthy diet that meets your individual nutritional needs. Once you begin fueling your body this way, you will not only feel better, but also you will improve your health and well-being. As a trained singer, people often compliment me. People stand up with lighters, kiss me, shake my hand and buy me drinks. I was carried by the crowd once after getting a standing ovation. (What a trip that was!) I’m not saying this to brag. I’m telling you this because I wasn’t always a great singer. I had to work at it. People often approach me after I sing too. They tell me how impressed they were. Then they tell me they can never sing. They say “You can sing, but I can’t” (at this point they usually look pretty defeated, so they take another sip of their drink). Let me translate that for you: What they’re really saying is “I’m afraid to try. I don’t want to be hurt again like when I was little and was told I couldn’t sing.” But the real truth is that they’re thinking. “I wish I could do that” What I've found is that virtually everyone who isn't regularly singing was told as a child that they couldn't sing. So they shut down this beautiful means of self expression. What a profound loss! Someone put them in a box. Most people live in limiting boxes without even realizing it. Whether one wants to be an accomplished singer or feel more confident about themselves in general, singing is vital. Living fully is what matters. Singing is universal self expression that humanity has been called to participate in since we emerged. Why cut off a piece of your humanity? Let's partake of this healing, joyful, energizing art form! So would you like to get out of that box? Would you like to change your belief about your ability to sing? Would you be open to stumbling, making multiple mistakes in order to build your skills, learning and growing to express through voice? Would you be open to facing your fears, inner demons, and healing your inner child? And not only would you like to change your belief about it, would you like to sing one song so well that you own it???? So let me say this again: YES YOU CAN DO IT!!!

YES,YOU CAN DO IT!!! You are invited to work with this simple process to get you started. (I share this with people so they can prepare before they attend my workshops):

While practicing, you may feel resistance, or hear your inner critic. Just treat those as simply more awareness of areas to love yourself.

Mind, Body, Waldorf Our highest endeavor must be to develop free human beings who are able of themselves to impart purpose and direction to their lives. The need for imagination, a sense of truth, and a feeling of responsibility—these three forces are the very nerve of education.” —Rudolf Steiner

Some people, you may know one, spend a good deal of time thinking and reflecting about connections in life. We look and find meaning in our journey—in our routine, in our experiences, and in our relationships. And we try to consciously appreciate all of its joy, pain, strangeness and wonder. For many of us, this consciousness began to take form in our late teens as we finished high school and entered the world as young adults. However, usually when we look back into our childhood, we see the seeds that began to mold us and left us open to new concepts and ideas. Often these had little to do with our formal education—an illness, a mishap, some traveling, a relationship—these affect us deeply and transform our thinking. As Mark Twain poked, “I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” One hundred years ago, an Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner created an education system to help bridge this gap between schooling and education--to help lay the seeds for a well-rounded, whole-person development in a formal, concerted way. Since then, people all around the world have been inspired to create schools following these concepts. A Benjamin Franklin type, Steiner worked in the arts and sciences, including—organic agriculture, complementary medicine, architecture, philosophy and education. In 1919, Emil Molt, the owner of the Waldorf-Astoria Cigarette Company in Stuttgart, Germany asked Steiner to set up a school for the children of the factory employees (hence the name Waldorf School). Steiner believed that all people have purpose in their lives and as individuals, each needs to find a unique calling and raison d’etre. The system of education he created works directly toward this goal--to help each student lay the groundwork to find him/herself. 16

Healing Springs I #103 I May/June ‘19

In the early childhood programs, academics are de-emphasized with a focus on body organization, play and relationships--all to make the child ready to become a balanced, academic and artistic student in the grade school. In the lower and middle schools, the main lesson teacher moves with the class for a period of years (grades 1-5, 6-8 or variant) to maintain a unique relationship and educational partnership with the student and family. The students make their own textbooks so that the material is directly experienced and absorbed by them as they learn, internalize and create. These books contain an aesthetic blend of academic and artistic works. In the elementary level, a noncompetitive atmosphere is encouraged without grading--meetings, assessments, and reports are detailed about the child as a whole. Throughout the years, internalization and absorption of the material are emphasized, culminating in the high school where personal experience through deeper discussion, critical thinking and analysis, internships, individual projects, field trips and scientific experimentation engages the students as they prepare to enter adulthood. In all years, every student participates in traditional academics but also in foreign language, hand work, movement, musical instrumentation, singing, theatre, and the fine and practical arts. With such a diversity of skills and study, all types of learners are engaged and supported. Creative thought, discourse, human relationships, and personal experiential learning are all nourished over time through a well-crafted and bountiful curriculum. As a holistic education, the goal is to help to develop healthy, productive, well-adjusted adults prepared for our ever-changing world, each in their own unique fashion, but all with balance and strength in their thoughts, feelings and actions. Of the approximately 140 Waldorf Schools in the US, Saratoga Springs is fortunate to have a Waldorf School--and one of only 40 in the country that continues from pre-k through High School.

Healing Your Past, Present and Future by Wendy Ball I remember how confused I became when first introduced in the mid-90’s to the idea that healing for one is healing for all, everywhere and for all time. At that time I was so firmly anchored in the linear time of my own life and identifying the experiences of my past as the cause of current difficulties that I couldn’t imagine how my healing would impact anyone else, nor did I care. I had protectively separated myself from those I felt disempowered by. I moved many times as a child and had little contact with grandparents or other relatives on either side of my family. As a minister’s daughter I felt separate from community. And community changed each time my family moved. I became insular and selfreliant and exiled myself from connection with others.

The body is designed to heal itself, when given the right tools. 550 Maple Ave Suite 202 Saratoga Springs, NY 518-306-9257 lisaobrien.nutrition@gmailcom

Years down the path of my life, as an experienced “seeker” and holistic professional I felt a strong pull to explore non-traditional approaches to healing. I learned how the body stores the impact of past traumatic experience within it, from the time of conception and even previous lives. I was exposed to the deep history of my family and my husband’s family and was compelled to acknowledge the impact of others’ trauma on myself. But how to implement this knowledge in the service of healing beyond the current life of myself or others?

Then Shamanic healing studies and practice entered my life along with two pivotal understandings: Information comes to us from a place beyond time, through images, dreams, symbols, and other ways we access intuitive knowing.

1 2

This place beyond time is also outside of space. Our ancestors as well as our future children and perhaps most important, our future selves are accessible. There really is a sense in which everything is happening here and now. I have come to have faith that when I transform a negative attitude, belief, or behavior pattern this ripples out and impacts not only those around me but those who are no longer embodied, and those who are not yet embodied. This empowers my healing work and makes it sacred and far reaching.

In this way we inherit beliefs, patterns of response and even illness from our ancestors, just as our descendents inherit these from us. As we heal and release ourselves from the impact of our ancestors experiences, we release our ancestors from these lines of influence at the same time that we release our descendants. Lots of things have contributed to a current spike in interest in ancestral healing: greater exposure to shamanic work, raised consciousness about the impact of trauma including it’s neurological and epigenitic impact, and a hunger for empowerment and sense of connection. Many people are cut off from direct experience of their blood lineage. We are humans on the move from one place to another, leaving behind traditional family and cultural systems of support in pursuit of a better life and more freedom. The cost for many has been a loss of connection with those who went before us. Ancestral healing offers an opportunity to connect with those on whose shoulders we stand no matter when or where they were, even if we don’t know who they were. How do we get to where we have this connection? When we open sacred space we bring in protection and deepen our connection with intuitive knowing, with support, with Source. where we may experience what is needed to deepen our knowing and heal. When we connect with our heart/soul essence we open to our deepest capacity for connection and knowing. When we move into stillness we create space for intuitive knowing to arise and come forward. For some it is as easy as leaving our minds at the door and going, with our intent, to that place of intuitive knowing. We are not alone. If you do not already have one, you might try creating a space with a photo or two or a small object that remind you of your own ancestral connections. Diabetes Massage &

ly associated with obesity and inactivity (Diabetes, 2009). Type I, II, and gestational diabetics, can decrease the effects of diabetes by eating the right kind of foods in the correct amount. Also, having a regular exercise routine helps maintain a steady blood sugar level. It is estimated 8 million Americans have diabetes and do not know it (Werner, 2009). An initial step to finding out if you have DM, is to have your blood sugar tested by a professional. An accurate blood sugar (BS) reading is obtained first thing in the morning. The diagnosis (dx) is given after having two consecutive readings above 126 mg/dL. Also, an A1C test is done to determine the percent of sugar sticking to the blood over the previous three months. A1C normally reads 4% to 5.9%. A reading of 8% of higher would dx DM.

The Effects of Diabetes What is diabetes and how on the Body does it affect the body? Diabetes causes high blood sugar if left untreated. If a person How does massage therapy affect diabetes? does not get their blood sugar (BS) under control, significant Massage works by decreasing blood sugar, improving cardiovascular circulation, enhancing the immune system, and lowering stress levels. Our discussion covers, what is diabetes and how does it affect the body. In addition, how does massage affect diabetes?

Diabetes Diabetes mellitus (DM), is a complex disorder involving the body's inability to digest carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. The body needs insulin to digest and convert carbohydrates as an energy source for the cells. Without carbs the body uses fats or proteins for energy. In a person with type I DM, the by-product of metabolizing fats are ketones, which causes the blood to become more acidic. This condition known as ketoacidosis can lead to a coma or death if left untreated. With DM either the body does not produce insulin, known as Type I DM, or it does not effectively use the insulin it does produce, Type II and gestational DM (Diabetes, 2009). Type I DM is an autoimmune disease. It can be caused by genetics or exposure to an agent which insights the body to destroy insulin-producing cells. Type II and gestational DM have been linked to poor diet and lack of exercise. Research indicates in gestational DM the placenta produces hormones which could increase the glucose. It is less likely to occur in someone who avoids eating animal products because of its high fat content. Gestational diabetes, as the name indicates, occurs in some women during their pregnancy. The person with gestational diabetes must test their blood sugar (BS) daily and take medication to lower their BS if it cannot be managed by diet and exercise. This is important for the baby’s health because if the glucose increases within the baby’s system the birth weight could be larger than normal and their pancreas may be overworked. Currently there is no cure for Diabetes. Type I DM requires insulin injections daily. Type II and gestational DM can be controlled by diet, exercise, and/or medication. Type II and gestational is typical20

consequences result. The longer the disease is left unchecked, the greater the damage. The eyes, kidneys, vascular system, and extremities are all potential targets. Blindness in younger adults has been related to uncontrolled BS. Research revealed DM drastically affects the eyes within ten years of uncontrolled BS (Smeltzer, Bare, Hinkle, & Cheever, 2010). Symptoms manifest as floaters, distortion, or blurred vision. The retina is a 10-layer membrane of the eye. This delicate thin layering protects the eye. An aneurysm can be caused by high blood sugar weakening the walls of the arteries feeding the retina. If the blood vessels burst or cause bleeding on the retina the client would need surgery. The heart is affected by diabetes in several areas. If blood vessels are weakened, then circulation decreases. Heart attacks are occurring in people with diabetes at younger ages. The coronary arteries (blood vessels leading to the heart) may become blocked by an embolism. Another complication of diabetes related to the heart is high cholesterol. Plaque builds up and can cause blockage of blood flow leading to cell death. A person with DM, can develop cellulitis. This usually occurs in the lower extremities (LE). The skin looks dry, cracked, swollen, and/or red. If the patient does not see a doctor and get treatment, this bacterial infection can spread to the bloodstream leading to sepsis, requiring hospitalization. A patient with uncontrolled BS risks impaired or decreased vision, myocardial infarction (heart attack), hypertension (high blood pressure), a cerebrovascular accident (stroke), hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), lower leg amputation, and/or the loss of toes. This damage occurs because the blood vessels narrow when high levels of glucose remain in the blood.

Diet and Massage Diet and weight control are the starting points in decreasing the debilitating consequences DM brings upon the body. A major problem with DM is high blood sugar. Massage can lower ones BS. Knowing this, when a diabetic comes for a massage, a good question to ask would be: when did they last eat and take their medication? Signs and symptoms to recognize if someone's blood

sugar has decreased too much are, extreme hunger, thirst, or frequent urination. Hypoglycemia (low BS), can occur if a person has not eaten, they overuse their medication, or engaged in excessive exercising. Having a busy lifestyle, some forget if they had breakfast. A person with controlled diabetes, who has maintained a consistent BS, rarely has this problem. Low BS can occur between meals. Snacking on sugar-free or lowcaloric foods can assist in maintaining a consistent BS. Raw vegetables are a good snack, cucumbers, radishes, zucchini are some recommendations. A dietician can assist in mapping out a healthy diet plan.

The ideal time for a massage would be between meals. An example, if they had lunch at noon and expected to eat dinner at five, two-thirty could be a good time for a massage. If the client has not eaten, they should have a sugar tablet or candy in case their BS drops during or after the massage.

Benefits of Massage A study on touch and its life-giving power was conducted back in 1915 (Greene and Goodrich-Dunn, 2014). Orphanages in the United States had a hundred percent mortality rate among their babies when there was an absence of physical contact. A psychologist from Boston went to Germany to find out what other orphanages were doing differently. They found babies who were held and fed thrived (Greene and Goodrich-Dunn, 2014). By the 1920s hospitals were using nurturing touch and the mortality rates in the U.S. went from a hundred percent to less than ten percent. The skin of a diabetic must be taken into consideration when receiving a massage. Usual sites for injection are the abdomen, rotating quadrants, and thigh area (Werner, 6th ed., 2016). The injection sites would be avoided in a massage. The therapist should ask if and where the client injects their insulin. Common diabetic foot ulcers are seen on the heel or the ball of the foot. The feet of a diabetic can be compromised because of decreased circulation. If there are any open sores, these would be avoided and brought to the client's attention during the massage. The therapist and/or a nurse does not diagnose a client, they can suggest the client be seen by their primary care provider (PCP). The therapist has an opportunity to assess the client's skin and communicate any concerns. Poor sensation can lead to skin breakdown and if the client is not checking their skin, they may not be aware of a problem.

Reflexology (2016), describes the importance of the pancreas in maintaining balanced BS. The pancreas releases the hormone insulin enabling the body cells to use glucose (BS) as an energy source. Reflexology can lead to healthier glands and organs, providing homeostasis within the body.

Reflexology treatment can be used for the stomach, pancreas, duodenum, and spleen. The reflexes related to the digestive system are in the arch of the foot (Reflexology, 2016). Both feet can be worked for stomach and pancreas.

Acupuncture according to Jin, Chen, Pan, Li, Wang Y., and Wang, F. (2009) has been used effectively to decrease complications associated with diabetes. Following three years of a control group using acupuncture, there was a decrease in high cholesterol and an improvement in kidney function for those with diabetes. Shiatsu massage can help a client reach homeostasis. Shiatsu assists the person along with diet and exercise (Werner, 2009). The theory behind this Eastern teaching is to assist the body by identifying an imbalance and working that meridian. The liver and spleen meridians are good to work for a person with diabetes. Spleen meridian starts at the medial big toe and ends at the seventh intercostal space on the lateral chest. The spleen functions with the pancreas and works in transporting and transforming what is ingested. Tonifier locations are Sp6, St36, and Li4. Liver meridian starts at the lateral big toe and ends at the sixth intercostal space on the nipple line. The liver stores and detoxifies the blood. Stress levels can cause blood sugar to rise as well as blood pressure. Massage therapy has been proven to lower stress levels and bring the body back into a healthy state. There is a mind-body connection, if the mind finds peace and time of restoration, the body will follow. Massage heals the body by turning off the fight or flight response to stress and allowing rest and digestion to take place. Holding patterns can be released and areas of tension worked out. A nursing home conducted a study and found the patients who were touched during meals consumed more calories and proteins (Greene and Goodrich-Dunn, 2014). In visiting someone in a nursing home or hospital, you may have noticed a decline in their eating habits. We can help someone have a mind and body connection between eating healthier and receiving touch by holding their hand during mealtime.

This article is not advising the use of herbs to treat diabetes. The research found on alternatives used for diabetes is for informational purposes. Please share this with your doctor or a trained herbalist. Some herbs cannot be used for one who takes insulin, someone who is pregnant, or who has epilepsy. Caution is needed when using herbs.

Bitter gourd, used in the form of juice, lowers blood sugar levels, as seen in reports from India, Nigeria and Bangladesh (Seetalooa, Aumeeruddya, Rengasamy Kannanb, and Mahomoodallya, 2019). Some popular fruits used medicinally against DM are figs, pineapple, and jackfruit in Guinea and Kenya. Plant extracts, such as, grapeseed extract decreases blood glucose spikes after a meal, ideal for managing DM. The use of plants to manage DM has been scientifically validated (Seetalooa, Aumeeruddya, Rengasamy-Kannanb, and Mahomoodallya, 2019). Turmeric benefits DM by boosting sugar control and preventing the disease. A study of 240 pre-diabetics was conducted, after taking curcumin (turmeric) capsules for nine-months, they no longer showed signs of the disease (Iliades, 2012). People with Type II DM took half a teaspoon of cinnamon daily and saw improvements in their BS levels, cholesterol and triglycerides (Iliades, 2012).

What scientific data supports massage for diabetes? A study done on connective tissue massage and peripheral artery disease provided evidence of improved lower leg health. Local arterial pressure and oxygenation results were seen lingering several months after a massage (Castro-Sanchez, Moreno-Lorenzo, & Mataran-Penarrocha, 2011). Another study in Sweden revealed light massage led to changes in diabetic biomarkers. The benefits of the Swedish study revealed women were especially affected by the massage therapy sessions (Sajedi, Kashaninia & Hoseinzadesh, 2011).

What is the future looking like for diabetes? With greater attention given to educating school-age children, the number of children diagnosed with type 2 DM can decrease. Because of this information, children and adults can become proactive in their health, diet, and exercise plan. New technology is available for an artificial pancreas to produce insulin. Google has a new digital contact lens to monitor blood sugar levels (Sajedi, Kashaninia & Hoseinzadesh, 2011). Apps on phones, such as, MySugar, help kids manage blood sugar levels with educational activities scoring points for good choices. Contact author for reference used in this aritcle. Bloom Where You’re Planted by Sarah van Rijsewijk In late December of 2017, with just a fews days to prepare, my husband and I moved from Norfolk Virginia to the tiny town of Galway New York—where he grew up. In 2017, we spent almost a year living in busy Norfolk VA and a quick realization lead us back to our home in upstate New York.
