Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you. Watching a 60 Minutes repeat of wildlife photographer Tom Mangelson left me speechless, similar to how the film The Last Lions did. I’ve seen this episode before, and seeing it again had me deeply wondering about my life and if I’ve dedicated enough action to those that I most admire and adore—wild and domesticated animals. Years ago, I asked the animals as a collective how I might help them. They responded by saying they didn’t need help, so much as they simply needed to be able to live their lives. In that way, perhaps I could help them by guiding humans to allow animals to do that. I’ve tried since, and yet I’d like to do more. Watching Tom, the photographer, inspired me. We will see how that inspiration plays out. A couple weeks prior, I went to Healing Pines Mustang Sanctuary in Corinth. I was there to see a Navajo Horse Blessing Ceremony the day before one was taking place at our barn. I rushed my time with my own horse, Tom, to get there for the beginning of the ceremony. Upon arrival, I learned that things were running 2 hours behind schedule. What started as a disappointment, turned into an opportunity to meet a new herd of horses. As we approached a group of 8, 3 were close to the gate and 5 about 20 feet beyond. I said hello to the first group, all lovely. Then one of the horses from the further group caught my attention, as he looked at me with curiosity. I walked towards him, eager to meet a horse that introduces itself. While he was interested, there was also a bit of hesitation seen in his expression. So, I stopped approaching. With me standing still, he eventually came over on his own to investigate. He decided he liked me and began showing a sense of humor. With him comfortable, two others also came over and I had peaceful and rich moments with each of them. This was not an entirely unusual experience for me, as I strive to connect with animals on their own terms often. Yet, because each horse is different than any other, every experience is new. One of the first books I remember loving was called Happy Horsemanship. My grandparents gave it to me about 40+ years ago. I’ve been studying how to be with horses ever since. In this moment, however, I was not consciously aware of using any method or technique, I simply engaged in the moment with love and admiration. It was bliss. I learned new horses and felt seen and blessed by them in return— not because of conditions that they do as I said or me doing everything right. It was simple and true. While sharing time with these horses, the others were not interested and I let them be. When allowing for freedom with animals, you may not get the connection you desire. Each animal has their own free will and preferences; let us give them the honor of choice. May we also listen and allow animals to show us how to hear beyond words, connect without conditions and be true to the moment as it is. This morning on a run, I came across a baby snake. I love snakes and didn’t want this one to be among those who’s life ends as roadkill. So, I stood in front of it hoping to shoo it out of the road. It continued to lay there, unafraid of my tallness and its tongue came out to “taste/smell” the environment—probably to identify the large shadow overhead. In that moment, I recognized the difference in our perspectives. What would it be like to experience life from the ground and tasting the air rather than observing it through sight? Then, as happens most every day, I thought about how little we humans understand. After showing me that I know nothing about sensing the world, the snake moved away and out of the road, hopefully to live a long and prosperous life. I’m telling you these three somewhat unrelated stories in hopes of fulfilling the animal’s request for my help human’s perceive them differently. One of the many reasons for my adoration of animals is that they do not intellectualize themselves away from their nature. Even my dog Z, who would have no idea where to sleep if not on her own love seat, still maintains the very things that make her canine—sniffing the ground to know what happened during the night, chasing potential prey and guarding her territory. Meanwhile, our first human ancestors lived similar to certain animals—in tribes and hunting food. Yet, in modern mainstream America we have little sense of such a lifestyle. One might say we evolved, another way of seeing it is we’ve separated ourselves from the natural flow of Life. Both perhaps are true. Is it time to bridge the two? The comfort of both Z and Tom is one of my forethoughts every day. So, it is hard to understand the numbers online for unwanted pets. I won’t bore you with the details, just know it’s a lot of dogs, cats and horses. Meanwhile, in contrast the earth has lost half of its wildlife over the last 40 years. That’s a statistic I can barely comprehend and makes me angry and sad simultaneously. From an archetypal perspective, this discrepancy between the overpopulation of domesticated animals and the decline of wild populations can be seen within the human species as well; our domestication is in surplus, while our wild—the ancient part that knows its self to be simply one facet of the natural world—is on the decline. It is my assertion that this fact is the cause of many modern problems; addictions, depression and a variety of illnesses. It is time to reclaim our nature and integrate it with civilization. This will be the new modern. If doing it for the animals is not motivation enough, the Earth also will thrive from this shift. Additionally, humans will benefit connecting back to their own nature—personal and environmental. photo by Deborah Neary

It’s happening at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 86 Congress St., in Saratoga Springs, NY. coherence training, which primes us to appreciate and savor this life. Without a basic knowledge of the nervous system, it is easy for people to sink into negative ruminating grumbly states that can rob us of years of our lives as we try to eliminate the negative feelings through drugs, alcohol, food, or excessive television. During this program, there will be an invitation to participate in the Intentional Coherence Lifestyle for a week from the privacy of your own home. Your happiness levels are measured at the beginning and the end of the week so you will have an objective report of how much happier you can become. Tell Me... What is This Reiki Thing? by Luci Carpenter

Someone asked me today….

Patricia Luccardi CTT, LMT, CNMT Delmar Wellness: 323 Delaware Ave. Delmar

“Tell me, what is this Reiki thing? Who is this Usui person? And please, make it easy for me to understand. I don’t care for the mumbo jumbo kind of stuff.” Well, I must have been energized and inspired by the energy of the sun and nature as there was no hesitation on my part and the words just started to flow as I replied: “Reiki is Universal energy. it is within and around all things. It cannot be altered or change or directed in anyway. Mikao Usui did not discover the Universal energy, but he did develop a method and protocol to connect with and share this vital energy with those in need. This method he called ‘Usui Reiki Ryoho. “The word ‘Reiki’ translates to ‘soul energy’, and the word ‘Ryoho’ translates to ‘treatment method’. Through his method of working with Reiki, one is taught how to be a channel (for lack of a better term), through whom the Universal energyReiki-flows freely and can be shared with those in need through simple touch.

Elderhood: our most precious & potent stage of life by Wendy Ball hat is elderhood, and when is it? Childhood, adolescence, adulthood: these are designations of stages of life that we are all familiar with. And then there’s midlife - a time known for assessment of one’s life lived so far, perhaps of choices to move another direction, to make up for lost time, or simply to pack in as much as possible before it’s too late. We all have our favorite movie versions of what that looks like. And then there’s “old” and our individual, family and cultural views of what that looks like.

W

It begins when the “senior” discounts start, at 55 or 60, or 65 when when social security starts. Should we be encouraged that “old” is starting later for those who don’t receive benefits until they are 70? Old is when “diseases of aging” begin to appear and with that increased medical intervention and medication. It’s when one begins to experience the impatience of those who move and think faster, and not being taken seriously. What many people focus on is increased physical and mental challenge and lim-

439-7644 itation. Depressing. No wonder so many people want to think about anything else. No wonder we don’t like to think about old age. I think we have an important choice whether we see ourselves as “old,” or as being an elder. We will spend at least as much time being an elder as in any other stage of life. We can choose to focus on loss of strength and quickness both physical and mental, or we can make this the richest time of our life, full of love and presence and grace. We can identify with cultural perspectives around old age which for the most part see and treat elders as “less than,” or, if we have shown up for the challenges of our lives with integrity and embraced our experiences heartfully we can claim the title of wisdom carrier. As I write this I feel sadness arising for all the ways in which people have been diminished and commoditized. We accept that our worth is measured by our ability to create profit for ourselves or for others. As elders we are in a sense de-monetized. There is currently a controversy about the right of sites like youtube to sanction users by “de-monetizing” material they consider not worthy of claiming value, primarily because they violate norms of correct attitude or language. Apply this to elderhood and we see people who are de-valued because they are for whatever reason living outside or on the fringes of the monetized world. As wisdom carriers we are the gold of our culture. We have extracted what is of essential value from our experiences. This is what we have to share with others at the end of our lives. This is our most precious legacy. What we hold that is essential has more to do with our beingness and the qualities that emanate from that

that are inspiring to and nourishing for others, rather than what we do. I believe it is these qualities that we take with us when we leave this physical life. You could perhaps call it our spiritual profit. These qualities support us as we prepare to leave this world, and show the way for others. As elders we can be seen as truly priceless, as having value that is beyond measure. You can imagine, that seeing yourself as an elder, as one who holds immense value is far more enriching than seeing yourself, as is the norm in our society, as diminishing in power and value. Empowered elderhood requires one to surrender external referencing, to seek and stand in the light of ones own truth. It requires one to re-define what is of value, for your own sake and for others. It requires one to stay with and bring closure to what remains unresolved in life. It requires one to become truly heart centered. This process of alchemy is what renders the gold of wisdom that we carry as elders. Some of us leave legacies of what we have done in this life. All of us have the opportunity to leave legacies of love and wisdom.

Yoga for Osteopenia by Sarah Avery, Doctor of Physical Therapy

W

orking at Goodemote Physical Therapy and FysioFit has given me an opportunity to see many types of situations that arise with patients and their health. One topic I would like to discuss treatment options for osteopenia and how to provide a well-rounded approach to protect and improve bone mineral density. If you break down the word osteopenia into the root words you get osteo- relates to the bone, and -penia represents porous. The word itself literally means porous bones. The bone becomes brittle and fragile leaving you vulnerable to fractures. Any bone in the body can be impacted, however, the most common sites of porous bones include the low back, the hips, and the long bones of the legs. Osteoporosis develops over time, and typically begins in middleaged women. Body type, diet, and level of exercise are just some of the factors that contribute to your bone health. In your bones, you have a cycle in which the cells grow and die off. In healthy bone, the cycle is in balance where the rate of growth and death are equal and the bone density is high. In this healthy cycle of “give and take” every molecule of bone is replaced in seven years. With osteoporosis, the rate of death outweighs the rate of growth leading to decreased density and porous bones. The living bone cannot keep up with the dying and absorption of old bone. You can have your bone density assessed by your OGYN using a test called a DEXA scan. It is a painless and quick procedure that assesses the common sites of decreased bone mineral density. It tells you how your bone density compares to people of similar

gender and age (Z score) as well as a comparison to the “gold standard” healthy 25-30-year-old female who is at peak bone mineral density (T score). If your score is a certain percentage lower than the gold standard you are considered to have osteopenia. Osteopenia is the initial stages of Osteoporosis and can begin to be identified in your 40s and 50s. This is a critical time to tend to your bone health, although bone health begins in your early stages of life. In my opinion, it is not too early to begin considering your bone health in your 30s. My aforementioned patient left me wondering what my colleagues and I can do to help this group of women… middle aged women diagnosed with osteopenia who are too young and active to be involved in a program for osteoporosis but do not want to take medications with potentially risky side effects. In my schooling for physical therapy, I learned that the cells that create bone respond best to weight-bearing and pressure. This is your typical “If you don’t use it you lose it”. This process is referred to as Wolf’s Law and has been known for over a century. You may believe that because you have an athletic frame, you are not at risk. This is not always the case because you do not have a lot of weight that is carried around thus the demand is not placed on the bones to stimulate growth. Weightlifting is essential in maintaining healthy bone mineral density to prevent future fractures and debility. I don’t mean lifting five-pound weights, I mean lifting at a high percentage of your body weight to truly put a demand on the skeletal system. Along with a safe weight lifting program, yoga can also be used to improve and maintain your bone mineral density. The goal here is not to improve flexibility. When you contract your muscle, the tendons of that muscle “tug” on their attachments to the bone. This tells the bones that they are needed and bone growth is stimulated. Another factor worth mentioning here.. as we age, your balance begins to decrease. This is a problem for women with osteopenia and osteoporosis because if your balance is decreased then you are at high risk for falls and fractures. Yoga can help improve your balance and can lower your risk of falling. It appears that we are not the only group that has similar concerns with this. In a study called “Yoga for Osteoporosis” by Fishman and Saltsonstall, they used a 12-minute yoga sequence daily for women who were already losing bone. Indeed, 82% of the subjects report gaining bone at the 2 year follow up. The poses were cautiously designed as to not harm the individual placing them in forward folds, for example, but to add pressure on the fragile bones as in tree pose where the long bones of the leg and the vertebrae are stacked. In this pose, strengthening occurs in the muscles along the spine (as well as others). Studies such as this are currently being done and also demonstrate positive results using yoga to improve bone health. The main benefit of performing the yoga program with a licensed physical therapist is that you can be certain you are getting the knowledge you need to safely perform the exercised daily at home. A physical therapist can work with you one-on-one to improve the strength and range of motion necessary to achieve the poses in the 12-minute yoga sequence for osteoporosis. You will get individual modifications to meet you where you are at while still getting the bone-building benefits of the postures. You do not have to have experience with yoga to access the poses as they have been carefully selected with various levels of experience in mind. The goal here is to provide you with a safe, easy, and quick sequence that you can perform at home to improve your bone mineral density alongside your current treatment options for bone health. If you want to take your yoga practice further or already have experience the therapists at FysioFit can guide you to know what poses are safe and unsafe, then you can choose what classes are best for you. You can have an open dialogue with the teacher about your personal limitations. The Yoga teachers will have the knowledge for how to modify the poses to suit your needs. Sarah Avery is partnered with other physical therapists to help you learn what exercises are the most effective for your individual needs. Rising Above the Negativity Featuring the Artwork of Vincent Tocco by Hillary Raimo

T

oday we are endlessly bombarded with information, events and choices of how to perceive ourselves, each other and the world. All too often the spin is hopeless and negative. Placing blame on endless reasons why we must be upset, hurt and angry. We see the result of a culture addicted to these attributes bubbling up in our youth. Nowhere is this more evident than in our primary school systems. Surviving school can seem daunting and dangerous. Yet somehow, we all get through it, perhaps scarred, perhaps defiant, perhaps even well. Peer pressure, social exclusion, bullying, learning the ropes of connection, love and friendship along with the pressure of getting good grades, succeeding and achieving, can be overwhelming and intimidating for anyone, let alone a young growing budding human being. Learning how to rise above all of these challenges is the treasure and silver lining. Like an initiation we eventually find an inner strength and will to live, and if we are lucky, we find a special kind of love for ourselves and others that challenges these negative energies and perhaps even dissolves them. This is the case with the artwork of local artist Vincent Tocco. Vincent was recently chosen to be the artist for the Positive Graffiti Project at Pleasant Valley Elementary School by Rebecca Benjamin, a literacy specialist for the Schenectady School District. She was hoping to come up with a solution to fix the negative graffiti that was constantly showing up on the bathroom walls. The solution was to find a talented local artist with skills in street art styles and cover the walls with positive graffiti that students could be inspired by and relate too.

He wanted the work to inspire students to make more art, to spread the light, and the ‘rise above’ message. “I think the positive graffiti will help the school community by collaborating with local artists and giving a progressive modern involvement with the community to create something that can inspire generations of students to come.” says Tocco. Vincent’s creative process includes intending to create something that is pretty and easy to relate too. He doesn’t want the observer to have to think very hard about it. He just wants his work to be simply beautiful. It has been my experience that beauty has an ability to overwrite negativity. Just as his bathroom murals overwrite the once negative graffiti. Transforming the space into something pretty, easy to relate too and perhaps providing just the write hope at just the right moment in a students troubled day. An injection of happy, love, positive and rising above the cultured environment. It is my opinion that this very act of creation is indeed a way to change the world, one person at a time. During a time when upcoming minds

and hearts are learning their way through life and deciding how they will approach it. So often it is the simple small acts of kindness that makes the most difference. You never know the full impact of your actions, and the vast reach of the ripples they cause. Vincent’s efforts will no doubt have far reaching effects on the young lives he touches through his beautification of space and positive messages. Perhaps even preserving the vital innocence of young minds just a bit longer. If an artist has ever been a hero, Vincent certainly is, and his work will have a large impact on healing a fertile time in many young lives, where the possibility of hope and love can be seeded by a simple rise above message. ell…it’s that time of year when the days are longer; the sun is higher in the sky and feels so deliciously warm on your face. Yay Vitamin D!!! So get out and clean up the garden, take extra-long walks with your fur baby, and shed some layers. This is also the time of year when you will bring the grill out and picnic on the beach, on a mountain top, or in your own back yard. With picnicking comes food safety that you need to be aware. So pack up the picnic basket with these tips in mind:

Holistic veterinary health, dental and end-of-life care for all domestic species.

Before heading out the door, freeze numerous containers of water. These act as ice packs to keep cold foods cold and can be used as cool tasting water to maintain hydration. It’s important to keep fluids on board during the dog days of summer consisting of heat and humidity. Pack plenty of portable foods that do not need refrigeration. If you will be out picnicking for hours on end you want to plan ahead and pack foods that are safe to consume at room temperature. Some examples are whole grain crackers with nut butter, dairy-free, grain-based salads, hearty fruit salad, and carrots, celery, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, cauliflower, and broccoli with hummus.

Freeze fruit such as grapes and berries ahead of time. These sweet delicacies are even sweeter when frozen. Consider them as dessert instead of more sugary cookies or brownies which can sit heavy in your stomach. Frozen fruit will also help you to stay cool. Avoid packing foods that could pose an issue such as raw meats, deli meats, soft cheeses, melon, salads with a mayonnaise base and onions, and hot foods. These can be more prone to bacterial growth in summertime heat.

5

If you question the safety of a food, throw it out! Food poisoning is the last thing you want to experience at any time whether you’re picnicking in your backyard or away from home. Spoilage can occur quickly especially when sitting out under the sun for long periods of time.

6

As the outside temperature rises, it becomes more important to not leave food to sit out for more than one to two hours at a time. If you have brought cold food, keep it cold at a suggested 40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Raw foods such as poultry and meat should be separated from produce and cooked foods so as to prevent any cross-contamination.

7

Bring extra utensils for cooking and serving. Never use the same utensils for raw meat, seafood or chicken as you would use for preparing produce or ready-to-eat foods. Wash utensils thoroughly in warm, soapy water after each use.

8 9

Always, always, always wash your hands before, during and after preparing food so as not to contaminate. If there is no water sources nearby be sure to pack hand sanitizer. To avoid overheating of food and family, find a site in the shade. Picnicking under the shade of a large tree will help in the prevention of heat exhaustion and sunburn. Once out of direct sunlight, your food, your skin and your health will be safer.

Citronella Oil More Than a Bug-Away Oil!

would help decrease their risk of lice infestation. Catching the “itchy head crazies” would definitely be something that dampers anytime fun! The tested potency of citronella oil was in the form of a 3.7% diluted micro-encapsulated oil. This dose is equivalent to about 18 drops/oz in a carrier oil, though the authors did not specify exact methods of dilution. The children received .3-.9 ml daily from a 200 ml (about 6 oz) bottle that was applied to their hair 6 days a week. This would be equivalent to 108 drops in the full 200 ml bottle for a total dosage daily of .5-1 drop.

(Adapted from original article on dr-lobisco.com)

W

The results showed that only 12% in the citronella group got the lice infestation (n=100) vs. 50.5% of the kids in the placebo arm (n=98). The oily smelling kids also had less chance of being reinfested.

Many are aware that the scent of citronella can be useful in keeping pesky, blood-sucking critters away. A sweet-smelling candle from the lemongrass family is what many people place by their side for making enjoying outdoor picnics a little easier.

More Good News for Citronella Oil Lovers

ith summer in full swing, picnics, hiking, and campfires are underway. This makes for a lot more of multilegged “guests” that are “swarming” our gatherings!

What most people aren’t aware of is that the essential oil is just as helpful for a bug-away shield. Furthermore, I was delighted to learn that this “summertime” oil also appears to have uses that expand throughout the whole year. It seems to be good at deterring other unwanted bugs in the human vicinity and it may even come in handy for Fido! One particular study with citronella recently got my attention. It was a placebo-randomized trial with children subjects to test if it

20

Healing Springs I #104 I July/August ‘19

An in vitro study with citronella oil lured away (unwanted) kissing bugs.

It also seems to be a Fido “silencer” by decreasing barking when used on a collar (vs. a tested placebo). (I guess a less irritated pooch makes for quieter summer nights?)

Practical Tip: Bug Rub Away with Citronella

If you want to try citronella for a “bug away rub,” I suggest you start with diluting about 6 drops in an ounce of carrier oil (1%

dilution). For the experienced essential oil devotee, you could increase up to 18 drops for a more potent 3% solution. You may need to reapply it about every hour you are outside, depending on the mosquito hunger quotient. I base this dose on the efficacy of one drop from the study on children with lice discussed above, and the timing from a very small study of fifteen brave participants. In this latter experiment, the subjects volunteered their forearms to test various mosquito repellents’ effectiveness. The citronella-based oil bracelet was reported to be helpful at keeping bugs away for about 20 minutes. However, it’s important to note that these products were commercial and not undiluted, quality essential oils. Please read my safety tips on my website and be aware of your own body’s response! Always use your best judgement and of health professionals. Hope you enjoyed this essential oil tidbit! e channel energy with art. Energy is life, everything is energy and there’s nothing more supportive to a great life than feeling life energy moving through us. Art gives us the chance to experiment with life energy and recharge. Art gives an energetic charge, lights you up, lifts you, builds new neural pathways and reverses the clock. Fun, creation, art, it makes life worth living. There’s lots of ways to include more art too. Join an art class, community theater, karaoke, join a chorus, take up dancing, take up an instrument or sport in the spirit of play. And don’t forget to anchor your art by getting out with other people in a community. The combination of art and community is powerful medicine for lighting up the Soul, reversing aging and providing fuel for living. My personal favorite is singing. When I sing, energy moves through my feet, up through my body, filling my lungs, opening my heart and moving out through my throat and mouth. When singing harmony I feel the energy of my notes lifting with the other notes up higher and out beyond our bodies into the surrounding space. The notes cut through stagnant energy raising the vibration of the whole area.

Reclaim A Your A Ancient by Katrina Clay

ago. The Industrial Revolution was over a 100 years ago. The internet was invented 30 years ago. iPhones came out less than 5 years ago. What are the implications of this? We have spent most of our existence as a species as Nature-Connected Bipedal Hunter-Gatherers. We have deep instincts and inclinations to behave in this way. Some of these instincts may even be genetic and biological.” So, how does one go about touching their ancient self? This awareness isn’t really achieved with a technique. Ultimately it happens on its own. Yet there are things to do that will prepare you to become more open to allowing it. I’ve come up with 5 suggestions that have worked in my life.

A

s a child, I felt a deep sense of disappointment. Instead of investigating ways to feel love for the world, I spent most of my first 35 years figuring out how to better fit in— believing that would alleviate the dissatisfaction. I learned, or at least subscribed to, the notion that there was something fundamentally wrong with me because of this feeling, and that it should be overcome. Over time, I began to recognize that this ache rarely left while I was participating in the world that humans created, no matter how well I looked to be “fitting in.” Conversely, it often did feel satisfaction outside in nature, which brought up a deep sense of belonging to the earth and the universe as a whole. This happens while being welcomed by a tree as I lean up against its trunk, waving to a bird in flight and seeing its wing move just slightly in response, or walking through the woods where the leaves dance hello. It feels now as though that disappointment was selfinduced when shutting myself off from the life of nature. The longing in my soul was requesting for me to interact with all living beings—trees, plants, domestic and wild animals. It had asked me to delve deep in to my core and engage all my senses. Not only the primary five, but also another sense that comes into play when the other five are heightened. I call it my wild sense, or ancient self. This name because it feels to me like a part of human nature that has always been in us. We needed it to keep ourselves keenly aware of danger and to find safety. Now instead of engaging this sense, we have built houses and buildings to protect us. In doing so, as is usually the case with protection of any kind, we also shut ourselves off from nature and separated ourselves from the very life that supports us. Months into contemplating the subject, years ago now (so some of the dates are in need of updating)—I received the Wilderness Awareness School’s newsletter, in which they wrote; “According to best estimates, we have been biologically Anatomically Modern Humans for around 200,000 years. We have been fully behaviorally modern humans for 50,000 years. Agriculture really only began 10,000 years

1

Spend time in Nature While doing so, become a participant in the outdoors. Pay attention to all that surrounds you and what is happening. What birds are singing? What are they doing as they sing? Where do the chipmunks live, and for what reason do they sound their alarms? Pay attention to the movement of the leaves, and notice which plants grow wild near you. If you are gardening pause from time to time and feel what the plants are doing? Stop before planting something and hold it in your hands, getting to know it as a being. I also recommend being without another human while in nature, and to either remain quiet, or speak out loud and then be silent to allow for a response.

2

Spend time with animals with-

out an agenda This has quite a bit of over-

lap with the first suggestion, but is worth its own bullet. As you are with animals, do the same as with the plants. Pay attention to what they are doing and how they feel doing it. They do not use words, instead behavior is their language. Humans so often think we know what is best, that we don’t listen to what animals are saying through their behavior—correcting it to what we want instead. I ask you to simply observe them out of curiosity about their nature. As you walk alongside your dog, imagine what it would be like to walk on four legs, what does is feel like to be always as close to the ground as your cat is, or what is the motivation for digging a hole or singing a song?

3

Get involved in making, listening or dancing to music For a long,

long time people have been making music and dancing for ceremony, celebration, communication and connection. It is understood across all languages and cultures, although each location has its own preferences and uses. Music and movement allows humans to become aware in a way verbal language and thinking overlooks. It can give expression to feelings that are otherwise difficult to express. Any kind of music will do. Whatever captures your soul and whisks you away from analysis.

Listen to your body This is an allbody awareness. Which means we need to first have reverence for the body we were born with—an undeniable challenge in our society. Yet, we cannot expect entertainment or anyone outside of us to change their ways or opinions. We have only control over our own. This, like much of what I’m saying, is an inside job—cliché as that sounds. Look for ways that allow you to feel appreciation for your body. Exercise, eat well, get bodywork. Once you have a reverence for your body, you will more easily listen to it and trust when it tells you something by putting a knot in your stomach, creating tingles of excitement or when something just feels right in your bones.

5

Let go of what you think you are Positive and negative labels put limita-

tions on you that you may otherwise outgrow. By dropping any preconceived notions of who you are, you make room for being in the moment and awake to your potential. Labels also put filters on your experience, altering your perception of what is happening. Without knowing ahead of time what and how you are to interact, you are more available to spontaneity. It is easy to blame our current predicament on technology. However, my guess is that the separation started long before technology existed. Perhaps the beginning was with the invention of agriculture, or the birth of verbal language. Regardless of where it started, my call out to you is to shift your focused attention that technology and language need and expand it so it includes all that surrounds you. Become a participant of life, centered in your body while allowing your ancient, wild self to awaken. Know deeply that you are an integral part of the whole and be aware that you belong—not because of what you do, but because of what you are. And what you are is alive. Enjoy it. "People need wild places. Whether or not we think we do, we do. We need to be able to taste grace and know again that we desire it. We need to experience a landscape that is timeless, whose agenda moves at the pace of speciation and glaciers. To be surrounded by a singing, mating, howling commotion of other species, all of which love their lives as much as we do ours, and none of which could possibly care less about us in our place. It reminds us that our plans are small and somewhat absurd. It reminds us why, in those cases in which our plans might influence many future generations, we ought to choose carefully. Looking out on a clean plank of planet earth, we can get shaken right down to the bone by the bronze-eyed possibility of lives that are not our own.” —Barbara Kingsolver Healing Springs I #104 I July/August ‘19
