Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you Saratoga is filled with live music, which fills me with delight. Recently, we were out watching Rich Ortiz, and I noticed a number of people off to the side swaying to the music. They appeared to have a dance bubbling up inside, but were holding themselves back from externalizing it. I couldn’t help but consider what this might exemplify on a greater scale. A few days later, I read the following quote by Gabrielle Roth “In many shamanic societies, if you came to a shaman or medicine person complaining of being disheartened, dispirited, or depressed, they would ask you one of four questions: When did you stop dancing? When did you stop singing? When did you stop being enchanted by stories? When did you stop finding comfort in the sweet territory of silence? Dancing singing, storytelling and silence are the four universal healing salves.” And so I ask you, when was the last time you engaged in whichever one most speaks to you—dance, music, stories or silence? I personally, need them all. I’d also ask these questions of our culture as a whole. In our melting pot, we have lost a lot of community-based ceremonies employing these activities. And it appears that disheartened, dispirited and depressed people are fairly abundant. How would our population be different if we made these pastimes priorities? My guess is that our country would be healthier of mind and body. Holding ourselves back can be one of the many habits that fill the void of what would be our authentic expression of life. We think of people with big egos as being self-grandiose. Yet, it is also a large ego that stifles our spirit—staying small, safe, and predictable. Our egos want to “fit in” and maintain a certain image. Our souls, in contrast, seek risk, expression, movement, experience, freedom and the like. It is also our egos that have made external achievements proof of success and our worth in the world, while maintaining a reverence for the rational. Perhaps expressing our inner dance—or whatever internal impulse our spirit moves within us—may be a simple and effective way to love life. Imagine if enjoyment was our new definition of success and practicality. In John Lennon’s words “...all hope for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.” So, appear to lose and still dance. Seem to fall and still sing. Succeed and still listen to stories. Be in chaos and still allow silence in your soul. As the Bhagavad Gita says “Inner peace is beyond victory or defeat.”

The small, Buddhist country of Bhutan, called “The Happiest Country on Earth,” has much to teach us about happiness. Most people equate happiness with attaining things—success, status, material objects. And as people strive for more and more to achieve that happiness, the only thing they find is less happiness. If you keep striving for more, it usually becomes a moving target, and you find that the more you attain, the more you want. The U.S., with five percent of the world’s population, consumes 65% of all anti-depressants prescribed worldwide, so we have much we can learn from Bhutan. The second program occurs on Monday, Dec. 3 at 6:30pm, and is entitled “Conscious Evolution and Birth 2012.” This program, led by Lin Murphy and Michael Wayne, will explore the concept of conscious evolution, as championed by Barbara Marx Hubbard, which tells us that humans have the capability to evolve to greater levels of knowledge, wisdom, insight and love; the program will also discuss Birth Day 2012, which is a global movement occurring on Dec. 22, 2012. The goal of Birth Day is to honor the paradigm shifts that are going on presently around the world, and to help midwife them so as to bring them to greater awareness and fruition. The program will consist of videos, presentations and discussions. For more information on either program, call 210-1557.

peaceful intentions to the four local New York counties of Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga, and Rensselaer. The goal is to have 1% of the population, about 8600 people, help make history by adding to an important body of intentional research that suggests how we focus our intentions can influence what we experience. State University of Albany Professor, Dr. John Foldy, and biofeedback specialist, Bethany Gonyea, MS, will be working with a research team that will be measuring changes in social indicators such as a reduction of crime or reduction of fatal car accidents.

Are you ready to learn how to play the djembe? Come and experience the music from Guinea, West Africa ...

To help people create a uniform meditative focus during the study there are going to be daily meditations offered on the website: www.bethechangemeditation.net. “Because this is a community project, we are looking forward to having people from the four counties participate” says Bethany Gonyea who is inviting meditation leaders to become a part of the project. Each leader can offer the meditation method they prefer, as long as it follows some basic guidelines outlined in the intentional research. Lynn Mctaggert, author of the Intention Experiment has studied some of the most effective healers and found that most all of them follow five general steps while offering their intentions; 1) Centering in the present, 2) Opening the heart and connecting to others with compassion, 3) Stating a specific intention, 4) Mentally rehearsing the successful completion of the specific intention with all five senses, especially vision, and 5) Surrendering the intention to a Loving Intelligence that connects us all. “This is a great way for meditation leaders to let people know about their meditation groups or businesses” says Gonyea. Meditation leaders will have their contact information included in the study. Individual practitioners are welcome to submit as well. Not all submissions will be accepted.

Meditation leaders are asked to express their willingness to participate by contacting Bethany Gonyea at bgonyea@nycap.rr.com. Meditation leaders are also needed to start meditation groups to help increase participation in the study. Please contact Bethany if you would like any support in doing so, or if you are willing to offer other skill sets needed for the study including, videography, technical support, marketing efforts, and recruiting support. Perhaps we struggle with finances, relationships, emotional anxiety, mental stress, spiritual malaise, or sometimes we even get a dis-ease. Saratoga P.L.A.N.Opens Rowland Hollow Creek Preserve In Saratoga Springs On September 7, 2012, Saratoga P.L.A.N (P.L.A.N.) opened the 45acre Rowland Hollow Creek Preserve in Saratoga Springs. The Preserve, located off Grand Avenue, west of Slade Rd, includes nearly a mile of trails consisting of a 1/2 mile loop and a shorter 1/4-mile loop. The public is welcome to walk the trails; all pets must be leashed. The trails meander through a wooded area that includes an overlook of Rowland Hollow Creek. The Preserve is part of an innovative conservation subdivision project in conjunction with the new Meadow Vista Estates development. A wooded trail system invites people to safely explore the Preserve while the woodlands protect wildlife habitat and the unpaved lands protect the water quality and wetlands surrounding Rowland Hollow Creek. Project partners include Charlew Builders, the City of Saratoga Springs and Saratoga P.L.A.N. A major grant from the Rotary Club of Saratoga Springs provided funding for the trail improvements, entryway, and signage built by P.L.A.N. staff, volunteers and contractors. “P.L.A.N. is excited to open this, our 11th and newest public preserve in Saratoga County. This preserve is part of a unique conservation project and should serve as a model of what is possible when new housing developments are planned.” said Maria Trabka, Executive Director of Saratoga P.L.A.N. Trabka continued, “As a conservation organization we look forward to more opportunities to partner with builders and developers to demonstrate that conservation development are not mutually exclusive”. Saratoga P.L.A.N. is a not-for-profit land trust offering comprehensive land conservation services to landowners, developers, organizations, and government partners, while striving to achieve regional coordination and cooperation on land use, open space and recreational trail planning. Become Your Best Parent Clearing the Imprint of Early Trauma and Nourishing Both Heart and Uterus with EMDR and Acupuncture/Acupressure.

by Wendy Ball and Dana Balassi ne of the wonderful things about this challenging time that we are living in is the growing awareness that intensely disturbing experience results in neurological and energetic imprints that if left unhealed may result in life-long patterns of dysfunction. There is also growing awareness that trauma imprints begin to form from conception onward and that memory exists at the earliest stages of life.

O

We now know that development on all levels: physical, mental, emotional, happens in relationship. We know that “good enough” parenting, i.e. moment to moment attunement, acceptance, affection, enough of the time, is needed for a young one to develop secure attachment and that secure attachment allows children to learn how to manage their emotions and develop skill in interacting with their world and with others. Those of us who carry trauma imprints can experience triggering and activation while pregnant, while caring for our infant children, and during parenting. Un-cleared trauma imprints may even prevent conception. One new and powerful resource for adults seeking to be a clear and positive channel of nurturing for their infants and young

children is a relatively new application of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a highly researched and proven effective therapy for clearing trauma imprints. The EMDR Early Trauma Protocol is designed to target and clear embodied, non-verbal memory of trauma from conception through gestation and birth, to three years of age. This therapy can provide powerful healing and connection to an experience of vibrant positive selfhood for

Environment by Ann Carey Tobin ntegrative medicine is a holistic approach to health care that considers an individual within the context of his mind, body, spirit, and environment. To obtain optimal health it is important to evaluate the health-promoting aspects of the living and working space that supports you and your family.

I

Americans spend approximately 90% of their time indoors. Unfortunately, evidence indicates that the air within our homes and buildings is often more polluted than outdoor air, even in large cities. In addition, those at greatest risk of adverse health events from pollution—the young, elderly and chronically ill, are usually the ones who spend the most time indoors. The risk for everyone increases with time exposed to the polluted environment. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests four steps to determine if air quality is an issue. Although, it is wise to take action to improve your indoor air quality even if problems are not evident. Firstly, check for possible health effects, such as chronic cough, asthma, allergies, irritations of the eyes, ears, nose and throat, headaches and fatigue. Be more suspicious if the onset of these symptoms correlate with a new residence or remodeling, or if the symptoms resolve in a different environment. If you feel that your home or work environment may be contributing to these symptoms, then discuss this with your health care provider, an allergist or an occupational medicine specialist. Secondly, identify potential sources. These could include numerous biological agents, such as molds, mildews, house dust mites, cockroaches, mice, pollen, animal dander and saliva; organics, such as from household cleaning chemicals, dry cleaning and paints; gases, such as radon, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde (eg. from pressed wood in furniture and certain insulation); and respirable particles from burning fuels. Eliminating or controlling these sources is one of the most effective methods for improving indoor air quality. Thirdly, examine your lifestyle and activities. Cigarette smoke is a highly hazardous Class A environmental toxin. Evaluate your use of commercial household cleaning products, air fresheners, aerosol sprays, pesticides, and your participation in indoor hobbies that use chemicals. Gas appliances, fireplaces, wood stoves and kerosene heaters are also potential sources. Finally, check

Healing Springs I #64 October—November, 2012

“Creating a healthier home environment is well worth the investment, and is a significant step on the journey to optimal health.” your ventilation. Look for evidence of inadequate air circulation, such as moisture condensation, mold, mildew, odors, and dirty heating and cooling equipment. Appropriate ventilation allows outdoor air to dilute indoor emission sources, and is another proven method of controlling indoor air pollution. The EPA provides a comprehensive web site dedicated to addressing indoor air quality; and a useful publications and resources link. A popular method for improving air quality in the home or office is the use of an air cleaning device. A HEPA filter can be effective for controlling air born particles. Avoid ozone generating machines. They can react with airborne chemicals to produce corrosive compounds, and they are not proven to be effective air purifiers. There are a number of household plants that have an affinity for removing various airborne toxins: spider plant, Boston fern, bamboo palm, peace lily, and pot mum, to name just a few. Consider these healthier alternatives for improving indoor air quality. Standard candles can emit varying amounts of soot and pollutants. Limit their use to special occasions, and consider substituting 100% bees wax candles. Instead of air fresheners or scented candles practice aromatherapy with essential oils via a diffuser. Household cleaning can be made less toxic through the use of a steam cleaner. And, there are many effective substitutes for commercial household cleaning products. Much can be done with vinegar, baking soda, borax, washing soda, vegetable soaps, and essential oils. Check out the books Clean & Green, The Complete Guide to Non-Toxic and Environmentally Safe Housekeeping, by Annie Berthold-Bond, Ceres Press, and Home Safe Home, by Debra Lynn Dadd. The Nature Maid website provides links to other resources for nontoxic living. Creating a healthier home environment is well worth the investment, and is a significant step on the journey to optimal health.

I feel grateful to hold a positive viewpoint on healing, longevity, and wellness. Through working with my clients, I am provided with a daily testimony of the body’s innate intelligence to stay healthy, agile, and functioning. To me, symptoms or manifestations of “diseases” are not a trigger for anxiety. Rather, physical sensations are the means that the body uses to communicate when“something is up.” As a devoted medical detective of this “body language,” I aim to use my knowledge for the power of good and to dispel any panic. Once it’s understood that the body isn’t misbehaving,it just in need of a little TLC, the ceases its persistent and constant cries for attention.

Giving Your Body a Little Lovin’ So, how do we give the body a little tender loving care (TLC)? TLC can be accomplished through attention, restoration, sequence, and time.

1

Paying Attention–In order to help the body, you have to first acknowledge that it needs support and ask it what it needs. If you get stuck, competent body translators (AKA medical detectives) can be hired.

2 3

Restoration–Give the body what it is asking for. This can take a variety of forms (see below for decoding cues).

Sequence–The body needs to be able to assimilate what it is being given. In general, this means making sure you modulate Safe, effective, FDA approved medical treatment for many these key factors prior to any other: common chronic health problems and emotional issues. • External stressors 2592 Western Avenue, Guilderland, NY • Diet (518) 357-4210 • Digestion and assimilation. 14 Healing Springs I #64 October—November, 2012 An Alternative Approach to Healing Body, Mind, & Spirit

“As a Naturopathic and Functional Medicine practitioner, my aim is to modulate and tweak this perfect match of biochemical support through supplements, lifestyle, drugs, or other tools that address the interplay of the entire person and system.”

4

Time–Every practitioner and client must become aware that the body has its own innate rhythm and heals in its own time.

Decoding the Cues Most people have a hard time ignoring step one. The body is pretty masterful at getting our attention and through any means necessary. It can signal in unwanted cues, such as pain, low energy, rashes, you name it! This is just its way of alerting us to check in and assess how well we are doing with our body maintenance and self-care. Below are some questions to ask in decoding unwanted symptoms along with a few suggestions to supply your body with what it needs:

1

What have you been eating lately—what may not be helpful for your body? And what have you NOT been eating? Food is actually medicine. To further this investigation ask more questions; What nutritioon may your body need to heal? Are you getting muscle cramps? If so, do you need more magnesium rich and calcium containing foods? How much organic nuts, broccoli, and dark chocolate have you eaten? Are you breaking out in pimples? Maybe you need to cut back on dairy and sugar. Is our appetite excessive and you can’t feel full? Do you need to eat some more fermented foods or cut back on sugar?

6

Do I need more support to make the above changes? Dysfunctional independence and living a life unhappy and as a martyr is not fun. Perhaps it’s time to reach out for assistance in igniting a change. Finding what will work for you is the most important thing! The biological needs of sleep, emotional support, nutrition, exercise, and meaning are the foundation of wellness. Then, if your body still needs assistance, it’s important to look for a practitioner who will treat you as an individual. For me, this means looking at one’s genetic risk factors, environmental exposures, and the interplay of all the systems of the body, not just supplying a supplement for a symptom. As a Naturopathic and Functional Medicine practitioner, my aim is to modulate and tweak this perfect match of biochemical support through supplements, lifestyle, drugs, or other tools that address the interplay of the entire person and system.

Staying Healthy Naturally with Essential Oils by Alina Piccone s fall descends upon us we northerners tend to spend more of our time indoors seeking refuge from the chilly air. This, unfortunately, also means we lock ourselves inside with germs, bacteria, and viruses as congestion, coughs, sneezes, and sore throats abound this time of year! If you are like me and are focused on maintaining a germ-free and chemicalfree indoor space, follow these four simple tips below on how to use Young Living’s Therapeutic Grade essential oils to naturally defend against unwanted sickness:

A

Diffuse therapeutic grade essential oils in your home and office. I highly recommend the anti-bacterial and anti-viral blend Thieves which boasts clove, cinnamon, lemon, eucalyptus, and rosemary oils. Young Living’s Thieves™ been proven to kill 99.96% of airborne bacteria after only 10 minutes of diffusion!

use it to wipe down door and cabinet handles, phones, sink faucet knobs, bathrooms, and any other germ-laden surface. Apply Thieves oil daily to the feet and spines of you and your family members before and after work/school in order to boost the immune system. Young Living’s Thieves blend is a therapeutic grade oil which means it is safe for all ages and even safe enough for internal use, so you can take a drop or two internally on a daily basis to stay healthy. Replace your chemical cleaning sprays with Thieves Household Cleaner. Much research has been done citing the concentration of toxins in the home. Unburden your immune system by removing these chemicals from your space. A capful of Thieves Cleaner mixed with a spray bottle full of water is all you need to clean every surface in your home from your windows and bathrooms to fruit and vegetables – plus you will love the cinnamon scent! Therapeutic grade essential oils allow us to be creative in our defense against sickness, all while maintaining a natural, chemical-free space for us and our families during cold and flu season.

Alina Piccone is a natural health educator whose passion is teaching others the benefits of adding therapeutic essential oils to their everyday lives. Five Ways to Create a Healing Space for

TAROT READINGS

by Michael Clarkson-Hendrix he Tarot is not only a form of divination, but it can also be used as a tool for personal emotional wellness. When you prepare to do a reading for yourself for this purpose, it is important to create a conducive space. Following are five tips you could consider using when you prepare to do a Tarot Reading for yourself specifically for the purpose of emotional healing.

T 1

Quietness is Your Friend. One of the foundations of an effective Tarot Reading for personal emotional wellness is creating a space where distractions could be minimized. Although relaxing music could be softly played in the background, this is the time to turn off the TV or anything else that might get in the way of you connecting with your internal world.

2 3

Have Paper and a Pen Handy. Having writing instruments available and ready allows an easy opportunity to record insights or intuitions. Also, the names of the cards and their placement in a spread could be recorded to reference later for further insight.

LOTUS Center for Healing Kimberly Hayden, LMT Licensed Massage Therapist Healing Energies Practitioner

khayden@nycap.rr.com 518-859-0842 376 Broadway, Arcade Bldg. Suite L4 Saratoga & Cambridge, N.Y.

Silence the Cell Phone, but Keep it Close by. Cell phones can interrupt readings when they beep, vibrate or ring during them, so, if possible set your phone in silent mode. However, if you happen to have a cell phone with a camera that is able to take pictures, having access to it allows you to take pictures of the cards in their placements so they are easy to access at a later point. Some of my Tarot clients set a card they would like to keep in their awareness as their wallpaper on their phone or as their lock screen to help with integrating the energy of the card.

4

Self-Check in Time. Before starting to do a reading for yourself, especially for emotional wellness work, it is important to check in with yourself to get a sense of how you are feeling. Are you feeling centered? Are you feeling grounded? Or, are you feeling stressed? Or, are you feeling angry? If you are feeling some form of distress, do a brief meditation to center yourself before you begin your reading. In this way, your negative emotions do not get projected into your card interpretations.

5

Say A Little Prayer. Prayers are easy ways to set a positive intention for a Tarot Reading. There are many ways to do this so I will share a couple of ideas to get you started. One way is to ask Spirit to guide you in a loving way as you interpret your cards. Or, you could ask that you be open to the inspirations of your angels throughout your Tarot Reading as well. Karuna by Lindsay Rehm s I constantly try to listen to my inner guidance in order to follow my true spiritual path, I made the decision to attend William Rand’s Karuna Reiki® class this past April. While it was a big financial commitment, I knew in my heart that I needed to be there in order to learn more, to heal, and to grow as a light-worker.

A

I find that when life presents itself with “forks in the road”, I am always offered a path that helps me evolve more spiritually. Let’s face it, 2012 is the year of change, and I feel as though many people have been handed life-altering events. For me, it was the turbulence of going through a divorce and wanting desperately for it to be finalized. The waiting in the in-between was crushing my spirit. I was holding onto unnecessary anger and having a difficult time forgiving; not only the other party, but the situation, and mainly myself. So, there I am, sitting in a class with twenty other Usui Reiki Masters and we were taken through a guided meditation of healing the shadow self. At this point in my life, I had many, many shadows. As I was being guided deeper into the meditation, I saw myself raw, broken, and stripped from the light. Tears were streaming down my face and this was the first time in a long time that I was able to see my spirit with compassion. Here I am, a person who gives so much compassion to the animals, to the Earth, and to other people, but I was not extending that courtesy to myself. Unbeknown to me prior to taking the course, Karuna Reiki® translates into the Reiki of Compassionate Action. I love how the universe gives us exactly what we need, when we need it! William Lee Rand, the founder of the International Center for Reiki Training, created Karuna Reiki®, which evolved from the Usui and Tibetan systems of Reiki. The main question that arises, and I questioned it myself, is: “Usui Reiki is beautiful and

Reiki

wonderful, so why do we need a new system?” The answer given is that we, as spirits, are endlessly evolving, so we need to continue channeling higher frequencies of energy that will aid us in reaching higher energetic vibrations. Karuna Reiki® is said to be the next step in Reiki training and students must complete the Usui Reiki Master Certification prior to taking this class. In the Karuna Reiki® master course, students are presented with eight healing symbols and four master symbols. These symbols work specifically for healing past life issues, protecting oneself against psychic attack and space clearing, healing relationships, healing on a cellular level, developing healthy habits, aligning with the higher self, healing the Earth, creating peace, trusting your guidance and intuition, harmonizing the chakras, manifesting goals, and developing universal compassion to name a few. The use of Usui Reiki symbols in conjunction with the Karuna Reiki® symbols proves to be a magnificent combination, and I incorporate all of these symbols into my healing sessions. Since using Karuna Reiki® in my sessions, clients report that they go into a deeper state of healing more quickly, yet the energy is very gentle and soothing. For me, Karuna Reiki® has proven to be substantially influential in balancing karmic debts and releasing deeply rooted emotional pain. It has also helped in healing aspects of my shadow self and my inner child. I am deeply blessed that I have been attuned to Karuna Reiki® and that I am able to teach this magnificent healing modality. Together, we can create and spread universal compassion. Lindsay Rehm, Owner of Ladybird Light, LLC in South Glens Falls, is an Usui/Tibetan Reiki Master Teacher, a Registered Karuna Reiki® Master Teacher, and an Animal Communicator. Lindsay’s next Karuna Reiki® Master Course will be held November 2-4, 2012. Please visit www.ladybirdlight.com or contact Lindsay at 518.330.6498 for more details or to register.

Emotional Healing

from Flowers by Jill Mattson lants have always been the primary source of healing substances for mankind. The ancient day Shaman inherited a wealth of knowledge about plants and their medicinal uses from his fore fathers. Plants growing in the wild offered abundant variety and powerful tonics for early man’s use in healing. Pharmaceutical Companies systematically study and test plants for drug development programs. To this day, plants are responsible for far more beneficial drugs than manmade synthetic routes. The race is on to find rare new plants in the jungles of the Amazon for pharmaceutical uses before they are lost forever through extinction.

P

Plants clearly have a unique physical nature, which we (and other living beings) depend upon: for food and nourishment, for important material and chemical components (for building and clothing needs) and for powerful medicinal properties and healing powers. Beyond these obvious applications a deeper appreciation of the power of plants is arising. As we increase our understanding of the holistic, irreducible nature of the universe and all living systems, it is indisputable that plant life functions on many sophisticated and subtle levels.

Plants are sentient beings. Plants demonstrate consciousness; they feel and move; they constantly respond to the surrounding environment. Sensitive experiments dating from the 1920’s showed that plants possess a nervous system. Polygraphs have demonstrated that plants respond to human thought and speech. These “simpler forms posses a life force and this has important implications for us. Plants and people share in the divinity of the grand design of nature.

(1886-1936). Edward Bach discovered that certain flowering plants are able to alleviate human emotional and physical problems. Bach learned to extract the essence or vibratory imprint from particular flowers and to transfer this energy imprint into pure water, which is then ingested orally or placed sublingually. These nonmaterial essences function as vibrational medicine— healing energy. The flower essences work on the multidimensional mind-body-spirit being. Each healing flower offers unique benefits to an individual. Eventually, Bach identified and prepared 38 healing flower remedies. Long before Bach, Ancient Tribes in South America similarly found native flowers useful for soothing physical, emotional and psychological illnesses. The flower essences work to balance, unblock and harmonize the various subtle and fine energy systems of the body-mind-spirit being. They are gentle but effective in helping a willing person bring about change and heal himself. An exciting new development has surfaced in recent years that allows the direct application of the flower essences through sound frequencies - bypassing the physical flower altogether. In this novel approach, the same marvelous benefits that many have long enjoyed via the traditional water borne flower essences, can be quickly and effectively bestowed through sound. Pioneers such as Sharry Edwards and Dr. Royal Rife spent their lives studying, measuring and deriving vibrational energies for healing. Eventually, Sound Healers were able to identify exact wavelengths of sound to address specific ailments. The precise mechanisms are not totally understood, but as with other vibrational healing it appears the effect works on a holistic basis providing benefits to the spirit and the mind of the person, helping one heal himself. There are emotional benefits that are inseparable from the overall healing process. At the deepest level everything (and everyone) is energy and energy heals most directly!

to extend the benefits of the flower essences by composing complete “Healing Flower Music” (Symphonies) that employ the sound frequency equivalent of the associated soul flower. The characteristic flower frequency is embedded in a complex musical composition. The listener receives the flower essence energy from this frequency and much more. The frequency need not be loud or isolated. The body is adept at incorporating subtle frequencies experience offered by the combination of the healing flower essence together with the musical encounter present in the symphony can produce a powerful, healing state impacting physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual energies. In closing, the benefits of the Healing Flower Essences have been widely utilized by people since ancient times to gain a gentle emotional lift or helpful resolution. There now exists a total vibrational energy path to the same blessings - listening to the frequency equivalent of the desired Flower. Further, by adding specially designed music to the experience even greater advances are possible. Certain people have reported extraordinary results when they simultaneously listened to the Flower Symphonies and took the Flower essences sublingually in the traditional manner. The transformation of sentient plant energy to pure vibrational energy (both available for uplifting the human spirit) is yet another manifestation that all living entities and all energies are one in the grand design. For our part we need to care for and preserve nature; enjoy the bounty of a simple wildflower to help fill your deepest emotional needs.

Jill Mattson has spent the past 20 years researching Vibratory Sound Energy for healing and a wide array of other remarkable uses (available in 3 books). She specializes in Sound Secrets of Ancient Civilizations. Mattson composes and produces her own CD's employing numerous Sound Healing techniques & energies, plus her original musical score. Her latest CD, Deep Wave As reported above, the benefits of the flower remedies can be passed Beauty, recently won a silver C OVR award for best specialty CD directly through the use of sound. P

Ask the ractitioner

How do we let go of all of the patterns of behavior that support a smoking habit, from peer pressure to the glamorizing of the habit through media, down to the addictive chemicals that fight the mind's effort to release this habit?

Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell Hypnosis is the path that I will espouse here, as I am a practitioner of hypnosis, but I would encourage anyone who makes the choice to enter the road toward becoming a non-smoker to use multiple supports, as those discussed here. Hypnosis works because it taps into the sub-conscious mind and supports the decisions of the client's desires, as well as rallying the ability of the body / mind to connect to the imperative to survive, to make decisions that support the ongoing health and well being of the individual. That is no small endeavor! At the outset, if I take a client for the purpose of assisting them to release smoking from their life, the first question for which I need an answer is, is this your decision? If it is because another person wants you to stop, then you will likely not be successful. The decision must come from you. Secondly, are you ready to give it 100% of your efforts? In other words, you need to know, without a shadow of a doubt, that this is what you want. Hypnosis can only work with your energy, your choice, your will.

Hypnosis is a very powerful tool that helps to facilitate the desire to heal, to grow, to expand and supports that desire by connecting to the sub-conscious mind, bypassing the critical, analytical mind, to break even the most intractable of habits. Our body and mind have remarkable abilities to heal when we allow it. Try it, you'll like it! Chiropractor; Lynn Allison Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things to do and one of the best things you can do to improve your health and add quality years to your life. I did this myself so I know. My suggestions are to work up to it- give yourself an incentive more concrete than good health. For example, figure out how much money you will save and treat yourself with that money when you succeed. Start decreasing your smoking before D-day. Any decrease in smoking is beneficial so eliminating those cigarettes you smoke without thinking, move your pack to an inconvenient place so you have to take an action to smoke. What alternative treatments helped? Consensus here is acupuncture, it helps ease the urge. Not just one session, several over the time it takes you to feel like a former smoker instead of a quitting smoker. It eases the urge and nicotine gum can help initially but isn’t great for you either. Smoking is not only about nicotine addiction but the habits and sensations that smoking offers that trigger pleasure in you. Think about why, when, where you prefer to smoke and have other ways and support people to help you. I found taking the homeopathic remedy, Mother’s Milk, helped me want to nurture myself and stop harming myself.

Oriental Medicine; Gregg St Clair Both my parents smoked when I was growing up and I hated it. Abhorred would be a better word and no matter how I ranted and raved, nothing changed. In the car, at the dinner table, in bowling alleys, restaurants, and birthday parties cigarette smoking was pervasive. It wasn’t just my parents either; aunts, uncles, friends and strangers all smoked around me. I’ve inhaled over 20 years of second hand smoke, and, my mom, of course, smoked when she was pregnant. With perspective now I guess I can’t say I really blame them. Smoking was part of the culture. My dad tells me Joe Di Maggio would come on TV with a doctor and tout the benefits of cigarettes. Just watch any old movie. I recently saw one of Alfred Hitchcock’s first movies, The Man Who Knew Too Much, and was shocked. Every character, man and woman chain smoked in every scene. It’s hard not to be influenced by that type of social pressure. But still I hate smoking. I’m one of the few people that can say they never even tried it. I ask all smokers that come to me the same question. How did you like it the first time? The answer is invariably the same- I hated it! When I ask why they continued, the answer is always I don’t know. In my parents’ generation at least they had an excuse, but today everybody knows how unhealthy smoking is, so why do it? The common answer I get to this is- it made me feel grown up, or, I wanted to look cool. But there are other reasons: How about the cigarette industry spends $36 million per day on advertising and promoting cigarettes*; how about every pharmacy, gas station and supermarket has a shrine like display of cigarettes at the front of every store; how about Hollywood, the movie industry and the media and its glamorization of smoking. Eighty percent of all smokers start before they are 18 and 23% of high school students are current cigarette smokers. It looks like even though the awareness of the dangers of smoking has risen social consciousness hasn’t changed that much since my parents’ time. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) states unequivocally, smoking is the #1 cause of preventable death in the United States. One in five deaths, about 438,000 per year is from smoking. Not only that, but for every person who dies from smoking, 20 more suffer from a smoking related disease such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis, or COPD. $193 billion is lost annually from lost productivity and health care expenditures on trying to keep up with these tobacco related illnesses.

Healing Springs JOURNAL

Healing Springs Mission: With knowledge comes choice. Our mission at The Healing Springs Journal is to address the whole person by providing articles and stories that allow the reader to make empowered lifestyle decisions in relation to the wellness of their mind, body, spirit, and environment.

Not only has the tobacco industry committed one of the biggest crimes against humanity, it is one of the biggest crimes against the environment since it is considered one of the number one causes of pollution in the world. There are hundreds of chemicals not only in cigarettes, but since tobacco is not a food, all the pesticides and chemicals banned by the FDA on food crops can be sprayed on tobacco plantations. Cigarette butts take 25 years to decompose and are carelessly discarded by smokers, who seem to have as little care about poisoning the Earth as poisoning themselves, creating a blanket of pollution around the world. As an acupuncturist that treats smoking, this gives me the opportunity to be on the front line of one of the world’s largest health and environmental problems. Seventy percent of these 45 million people report they want to quit completely and more than 40% try to quit each year. But success rates can be dismal. The patch reports a 12% success rate and nicotine gum only 6%. I have about a 60% success rate using acupuncture and it’s one of my favorite things to treat and the good news is that if you smoke one pack a day the cost of treatment pays for itself and will actually save you money! In Oriental Medicine we have a well researched and documented treatment plan called the NADA protocol that is used for addictions and smoking cessation. In addition to this specific procedure to quit I’m also credited as a provider of the New York State Smoker’s Quit Line and certified through the Seton Health Center for Smoking Cessation which recently received an 80 million dollar government grant for the success of their program. I have the ability to work with individuals or large groups and businesses that are looking to offer smoking cessation to their employees. In addition to the acupuncture, I offer support in between treatments. Most people make multiple attempts at quitting and come to me looking for additional support. If you are contemplation quitting on your own right now, my basic advice for success is: pick a date, write it on the calendar, tell everyone, quit cold turkey and remember the Five D’s; 1. Delay smoking until the urge passes. 2. Distract yourself away from the urge. 3. Deep Breath to relax. 4. Drink Water to stay hydrated. 5. Discuss (call) a support person. I would also highly recommend visiting www.nysmokefree.com for research and to access many of their free services. Acupuncture for quitting smoking has the ability to save people’s lives, protect the environment and save billions of dollars on health care for our country. I know this is no easy task. How do we compete against the militant big tobacco companies and $36 million a day in advertising? Progress, though slow, can happen. In my lifetime we now have smoke free schools, restaurants, airlines and hospitals. Things are changing and the time is now, more than ever, to create a smoke free world. It all begins with you. Good Luck! Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

MELTING THE ICE IN

the Heart of Man by Judi Macy

“Only by Melting the Ice in the Heart of Man does Man have a chance to change and begin using his knowledge wisely” —Angaangaq

W

hat does Melting the Ice in the Heart really mean, what does it look like? I met Angaangaq, an EskimoKalaallit Elder, Shaman, Teacher and Healer over eight years ago at an Intensive and thus began my journey into the world of melting ice. In 2009 an ancient prophecy of Angaangaq’s culture became living as people from all over the world gathered at the Sacred Fire Ceremony in Greenland. During the ceremony, Elders from Greenland told a story of their land, of the many changes that have happened and are happening and how their lives are being affected. Atsaarsuaq Hansinna Greenland has, per

capita, some of the highest rates for alcoholism and suicide in the world. Over the years their ancient ceremonies have been taken away and now the ice, the glaciers, are melting, creating enormous changes in their lives. I listened as the Elders gave their message to the world and as Angaangaq translated their words into English. I saw the beautiful connection and Love flow amongst these Elders. I witnessed the Elders telling their story with Loving kindness to a world whose beliefs and actions have helped to create the change and the chaos in their world. I was in awe as I witnessed the presence, the Love and the wisdom of these Elders. I was humbled like I have never been humbled before. I stood there at the fire and I prayed that I would always remember these moments of grace and wisdom and I prayed that I would always stand in the energy of loving kindness, just like these beautiful Elders. That is what Melting the Ice in the Heart of Man and using your knowledge wisely looks like.

A Few Favorite Springs by Aime “Trent” Millet ll the waters of Saratoga were used for health, healing and longevity by various clinics, sanatoriums and medical clinicians in the past. Starting in the North end of Saratoga, right next to the Farmers Market, in High Rock Park, you’ll find the Governor and Peerless Springs. I find from talking to many people, that the Governor spring, has quite a following of folks who say it is their favorite water. It is also the spring water most mentioned by people for use watering plants indoor and out. It is a relatively mild mineral water. Peerless however, is stronger water. I find no existing records of its use by medical and health professionals. This is no indication that it was not used that way.

A

cess rate for Gout. The majority of clients were treated for heart and circulatory conditions (85,000 plus in ten years). If one rests after the bath the effect keeps on for up to two hours. The water and its effect haven't changed, only the rhetoric around the information.

Many Doctors intended to compile records and were too busy to do so. The exception are the public records compiled by Dr. McClellan for the Roosevelt Baths, using the Lincoln spring during its years as a V.A. Hospital. We know from those records that Roosevelt Bath had a 93.9% success rate for improvement of rheumatoid arthritis (21-28 baths), 93.1% for osteoarthritis, 89.9% suc-

Two blocks East we come to “Old Red”. I consider this spring one of the 3 most important springs in Saratoga and among the best dozen in the Eastern U.S. (New York alone had over 300 spring waters listed as medically beneficial). The iron in Old Red is very similar to hemoglobin in the blood and contains 2 human cell salts. I have had upward of 150 people at this point tell me the application of Old Red eliminated their eczema and psoriasis or other skin problems. I found a record of one doctor in the 1920’s taking affidavits on its ability to reverse shingles. I credit Old Red with healing my skin problem too. The large number of people who have come back to me to say their blood iron normalized after drinking old red and had their professional medical practitioners removed them from taking artificial iron supplements backs up my belief.

My next favorite water is Hathorn 1 in the middle of town. The Hathorn series of waters were one of five shipped world wide to hospitals, dispensary and clinics for digestive problems. Doctors recommended drinking one or two 6-8 ounce glasses of Hathorn 20+ minutes before meals (never right afterward as it is alkaline) or sipped through out the day. Many college students know a few glasses before a “night on the town” will remove any indication of alcohol consumption the next morning.

effervescent. Geyser spring (available across from the auto museum in the “mineral water” spout) has world fame as an antacid, digestive aid and cathartic. It makes “superior flapjacks” according to newspaper bylines of the 1940’s. A niece of Hatties (of the famous “Hatties Chicken”) restaurant has a recipe using Geyser spring water in a cake.

I’ve already mentioned Lincoln water, the CO2 water used at Roosevelt Bath and Spa. Having spent the summer conducting my water tours from there I have seen and heard marvelous truths of its healing effects. We have records that indicate all the bath houses combined when many privately owned bath were operating gave 247,000 baths in one year! The Roosevelt, Lincoln and Washington Baths, all using the Lincoln CO2 water averaged 110 to 130 thousands baths a season with Lincoln reaching 4000 baths a DAY at one point. In lower Spa Park my favorite water is Polaris, the small spouter across from the parking lot of the picnic area. Polaris is marvelous sparkling, seltzer type water. Eight out of ten people find it delightful. Polaris makes amazing smoothies. They become very smooth and slightly

Certainly of worthy mention is Karista spring which was not running for several decades. It is an awesome water of crystal quality and coolness (45 degrees). And there are many other waters to praise. Orenda and Hayse are both high in natural lithium and iodine that are ideally received by inhalation and fill the atmosphere surrounding the area with health. Hayse in large amounts is a lower digestive purgative and laxative of strength. Orenda was used for the inhalation of potassium iodine. The benefits of natural lithium are an article in itself. Yes, these are a few of my favorite springs and I hope they will be yours too! How lucky we are to be here.

Trent does informational tours of the waters of lower Spa park on Fri and Sun at 1 and 3 p.m and Sat at 10 a.m and 3 p.m. or by request. Contact Aime "Trent" Millet water informational services. Don’t Fight It by Jim Fenton omeone recently said to me, “Don't fight it.” How appropriate, I thought. Can we truly go through life without fighting our thoughts? I am not speaking of actions in the outside world, but the thoughts that lead to those actions. Imagine if we took a good honest look at the thoughts before we acted. We could sort out the ones we wanted from the ones that are not so desirable. Naturally we are attached to some of our thoughts or ideas more than others. A little willingness is all that is required in giving up thoughts that are stressful or uncomfortable for a new way of perceiving whatever the negative thought might be for more happiness.

S

What if nothing had to change for me to be happy today? What if I could accept things as part of our Creator’s plan no matter what? Said a little differently, what if I could be at peace no matter what happened? About eleven years ago I started meditating, and I now am happy no matter what. As we all do, I, too, have my moments of challenge. The big change is that I now appreciate the positive AND the “negative” thought experiences. Now, let’s get back to what’s important. Are you happy? Are you able to persevere and live life with enthusiasm or are you “going through the motions” more than you would like? There is a great deal of sickness and upset in the world. A great deal of time gets planned without time for presence and reflection. Perhaps if we decide to be happier much of the uneasiness will be taken care of. So, one word above is very important. It is the word decision. Any time we are out of harmony we can make a new decision. If we use the challenging or “negative” experiences to make a new decision, that moment becomes a brand-new opportunity to experience without the heaviness or stress of our judgment. New decisions that are shared with the higher power become transformed experiences. If we make a new decision for harmony or peace or non-judgment we are no longer negatively affected by things or situations that previously were stressful with the accompanying negative judgment that causes zus discomfort or pain.

Okay, so far, so good? Then, what about the situations which are my biggest challenges? Same thing; ask for a different way of seeHealing Springs I #64 October—November, 2012

ing whatever it is that is bringing you the discomfort. Asking is a way of relying on the power that created you and me. Yes, the moment we are “sick and tired” of seeing things the way we have always seen them, we can ask to see them differently. We will always be answered. I am now totally free from painful thoughts or ideas from which I once believed I would never heal. The thought heals, and the physical release follows. I am not saying that everything happens on MY schedule; rather, it happens naturally, as it is supposed to. I now experience abundance! So, the next time something is bothersome, recognize that a judgement or a decision must have been made about someone or something on our own without asking for our true (Creator’s) perception of it. We honestly do not have to identify what specifically is troublesome. The stronger our determination for peace and happiness, the quicker we will experience that peace and happiness. It is as simple as that. Remember, whatever is causing you stress, it matters not. When we appreciate these situations as opportunities to heal, we can truly experience Heaven on Earth!
