Rainy season is not considered favourable from the health perspective. But despite that, we can keep ourselves healthy even in this season The rainy season may have its charms: the cool weather, the reason to wear jackets and the magnified pleasure of a cup of hot coffee or a bowl of hot soup. But it has dangers as well, primarily in the form of diseases like dengue and in infectious bacteria and viruses that become active due to the high humidity brought about by repeated spells of rain. These are simple precautions we can take to stay in peak health condition even in this season ÂŞÂŞ Bacteria and viruses come into contact just by crossing the road or holding infected things so Wash your hands as frequently as you can with

High blood pressure or hypertension is one of the most important causes of premature death worldwide, claiming nearly 9.4 million lives very year. According to a report published in 2011 by the World Health Organisation (WHO), in India, hypertension affects one in three adults aged 25 and over. Making the scenario more worse, the fact is that in India, only a quarter to a third of patients are aware of their hypertensive status. Further, only one in five patients suffering with hypertension are on treatment and less than 5% are controlled. Undiagnosed and uncontrolled hypertension leads to complications like heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and eye damage. Early death or disability due to hypertension can cause loss of income and incur huge medical care expenditures, which can be devastating for the family. The only way is to prevent hypertension is to undergo a regular blood pressure checkup. This would detect high blood pressure early and help to take action to minimize future problems. Hence it is recommended that all healthy adults should get their BP checked during their routine visits to the doctor. However, if BP is in the higher range or one has a personal or family history of high blood pressure, stroke or heart attack. It is best to have it checked more frequently, as advised by the doctor. ¾¾ Some essentials about BP: ªª The BP number / reading is normally denoted by a ratio of two numbers. ªª The upper number is normally termed as systolic BP and the lower one is the diastolic BP. ªª The normal range of systolic BP is 110-139 mmHg and that of diastolic BP is 7089mmHg. ªª A person is at risk for hypertension (BP > 140/90mmHg) if one:  Has family history of hypertension  Is overweight or obese  Is aged > 40 years  Does not exercise regularly  Has a diet high in salt intake  Drinks too much alcohol (>2 alcoholic drinks per day for men, more than 1 alcoholic drink per day for women)  Is a smoker  Is diabetic  Is always stressed

Normal Skin The skin normally is made up of 3 layers - the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue. The epidermis is the outer layer. The cells of the epidermis, move from the bottom layer of the epidermis to the top layer. Epidermis acts as a protective layer to external environment. As the cells reach the top layer they flake off. The second layer dermis, contains the connective tissues which are the structural elements of the skin. These tissues give skin the strength (collagen fibres), turgor, elasticity (elastin) etc. The cells of the epidermis receive their nutrients from the blood vessels in the dermis. Below dermis is the subcutaneous tissue

containing fat cells. These fat cells act as insulation to the body. The skin looks plumpy due to fat cells. ¾¾ Changes That Occur In Skin As Age Advances  Changes in Epidermis: The epidermal cells become thinner as age advances. They also lose their stickiness. This change in epidermal cells allows the moisture to escape instead of retaining it back causing dryness of the skin. As we get old the epidermal cells start dividing slowly and the rate of repairing process also retards. ¾¾ Changes in Dermis  The collagen fiber production reduces  The elastin fibers wear out  The production of sebum from sebaceous glands decreases  There will be a decrease in number of sweat glands  The supply of nutrients also decreases ¾¾ Changes in Subcutaneous Tissues ªª The fat cells get smaller with age ªª All these changes in three layers of skin lead to wrinkles and sagging ªª The Factors That Cause Early Aging  Sun: Constant exposure to U-V radiations from the sun causes premature aging of skin. Due to constant exposure to sun the epidermis becomes thin and many harm full lesions like basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinomas occur. Sun light also damages collagen fibers of dermis causing early aging.  Hormones Tips ªª Apply moisturizer regularly ªª Air conditioners and room heaters tend to dry the skin. Hence apply heavier moisturizer if you are working in these conditions ªª Taking cold water bath immediately after heavy physical works ªª Do not stretch or pull the delicate skin under eye or facial skin ªª Do not go out in hot sun. Carry an umbrella, wear sun glasses and apply sun screen lotions before stepping out in hot sun ªª Avoid smoking ªª Consume chick peas and soya beans regularly ªª Drink plenty of milk ªª Practice Yoga and Meditation regularly ¾¾ Home Remedies ªª Apply egg yolk once in a week for 10 minutes ªª A mixture of honey, olive oil and cream give very good results ªª Apply nourishing mask once in a week

and softens skin, encouraging the skin to renew itself helps scars to heal .Restores moisture balance of the skin relieves the itch in your body, helps ward of that tired feeling, burning sensation, thirst, and effects of bad deed get washed away. Charaka the ancient Ayurvedic healer calls the outer most layer of the skin as Udaka dhara means water holder. Ayurveda considers it crucial to maintain the skin moisture balance because it is essential part of overall skin health. A perfect balance reflects the inner radiance .Harsh cleansers strip the moisture from the skin and damage the delicate fibers that promote the reflection of the inner glow called as Prabha in Ayurveda. Cleansing agents should be alive so that they can enlighten and brighten the skin. Ideal formulations help the process of rejuvenating the skin so that during bath or cleaning process the skin can absorb adequate molecules of water into the cells. As we age there are lot of changes in the structure and functioning of the skin. The skin looses the ability to retain moisture and the wind bioenergy which is aggravated makes the tissue dry and vulnerable to even minor trauma. Using certain cleansing soaps may pose a threat to skin integrity because they not only remove dirt and debris but also remove the healthy layer. Ayurveda recommends application of Green gram flour mixed with milk, made into a paste in general for all skin types as a cleansing agent. Persons who bath with warm water mixed with Amla or who uses paste of Amla over the body and bath will never age rapidly and live long. Temperature of water in a bath can create physiological and psychological changes. A hot water bath between 96F and 105F.on the body below the neck stimulates immune system increases circulation soothes nerves calms and relaxes the mind, Bath for 2 to 15 minutes help treat chronic Rheumatic manifestations in joints fibrous tissue muscles, muscles spasms ,colic in the stomach, intestines, gallbladder or urinary tract. Ayurveda prescribes hot water bath for disorders where Wind and Water bioenergy are imbalanced. However hot water baths above 101F puts a strain on the heart as it works to dilate blood vessels in order to cool the body . People suffering from heart disease or central nervous system need to avoid these temperatures . A word of caution --- pouring hot water on the head is not recommended as it leads to loss of strength ,hair and sight gradually ie vision impairment may be there. Cold water bath 50F to 70F stimulates the metabolism. The feeling of exhilaration is achieved with the cold water because circulation becomes rapid in the body and cold water temperatures are used as metabolic stimulants for obesity and for atonic state. Cold showers reduce stress levels and create mental toughness. Ripening The secret for success in yoga and spiritual life is the degree of dedication and consistency with which we apply ourselves

24

www.bangalorehealthtv.com

The secret for success in yoga and spiritual life is the degree of dedication and consistency with which we apply ourselves. It is necessary to have a practical approach to these matters in order to experience real progress. Just by reading and discussing spiritual matters we are not able to transform our lives. We become more like parrots repeating what we hear from the gurus and the scriptures, without converting the intellectual knowledge into our own experience. In order to convert the book knowledge into practice, it takes some effort on our part. As a yoga teacher, I come across some students who complain about the techniques they are learning. They become frustrated and say it doesn’t work rather than analysing the way that they are practicing them. Many times I have found their degree of interest to be faulty, giving more importance to other activities in their lives. I hear comments such as, “ If I have time I will practice” The time never comes unless one makes their practices a priority. It is not possible to receive the real benefits of the powerful spiritual practices, when other things always come before the practice. The yogic experience remains a concept that we never experience. There are many people who are able to deliver discourses on spiritual topics, like the famous pandits of India, some Christian priests in the west, or some so called new age healers. However, many of them are not able to translate the book knowledge into action. In order to firmly establish oneself in spiritual life, it takes time and dedication. However, we seem to be allergic to processes. The ripening of the fruits and the blossoming of the flowers are all a result of a slow and steady process. If you try to fasten the blossoming of a flower by opening it with your hands, it will not work. Due to an impatient mind, we try to jump the steps of spiritual life in order to obtain a quick result. As we know from material life, fast food is not the best for our body. In the same way the fast spiritual tract can lead us astray and then we may not reach the goal. The ambitious and fast way of life in which we have been involved, pushes us to run after quick achievements. We want to impose this habit on all the activities of our life, causing us to approach yoga and spiritual life with the ‘fast food’ mentality. This often causes disillusionment. Some people, who have experienced small psychic currents, believe that their kundalini has reached the top chakra. Their ego blossoms and they present themselves as enlightened to others, degrading the whole tradition of true awakening. The true spiritual masters will not make miracles for you. They will simply provide you with certain methods or techniques and it is up to you to practice and develop them. The spiritual masters can also help to inspire you to move successfully through the process of growth and they can guide you when the going gets tough,

but nobody can walk the path for you. If the master walks the path he/she will receive the benefits. In the same way you must walk the path yourself and then you will receive the profit from your spiritual investment. Once some people asked Jesus, “ How will we be able to recognize a true disciple?” Jesus answered, “ By their actions you will recognize them.” It is very important that we trust the path that we have chosen, but before choosing it we should see properly and feel that it is the right one for us. In this life there is a way for every body. Since we are born with this physical body, it means that we have been given an opportunity for spiritual growth. Our duty is to find the path and start walking it. How long will it take for us to find the right shoes size so we can walk comfortably? This depends on several factors, but the most important and most determinant aspect is our degree of interest. I am sure that if we have a high intensity and eagerness to find our inner treasure, the universe and God will guide us on the way to find it. A little bit of effort every day is enough. We do not need to be in a hurry in the path of life. Rushing makes us tired and then we make mistakes. We should move slowly and steadily just like the famous tortoise in the tortoise and hare story. We can go according to our own capacity and then we will be able to walk further. The fast ways and short cuts most of the time become a long and painful experience. When we move too fast we are prone to lose our awareness and then we will end walking in darkness. Every day brings new lessons and we should digest them properly in order to avoid constipation. Let’s move with serenity in this path and try to find the balance in each action that we perform. Soon we will be able to transform our lives into a great celebration.

Alternate therapy

CLINICAL MAGNETOLOGY The Drugless therapy for the New Millennium Magnetism is a Universal force. From time immemorial magnets have been used to treat diseases. Over the years a system of treatment evolved known as magneto Therapy. Dr. Narendran also started his medical career in the mid 70’s as a Magnet Therapist. During practice he observed shaky fundamentals, lack of scientific reason, blind result orientation and inherent inner contradictions made Magnet Therapy a difficult proposition to practice in a Clinic. Diseases worsened, patients could not be managed. So Dr. Narendran was disheartened but had unshakable conviction in the infinite therapeutic potentials of Magnetic Energy. He responded to the call of his inner self and went into deep study. He realized that the problem lies not with the energy, but with the ways it was practiced. His sustained, unrelenting, intense research works found light at last. A vibrant, wholesome, dynamic new medical concept was born and he named it ‘Magnetology’. ¾¾ The Concept of Clinical Magnetology Magnetism is the Universal force. Our mother earth is a giant Magnet. We are all experiencing the beneficial effect of Magnetism. But due to various reasons such as staying in Concrete buildings and offices, traveling by car, buses and trains and improper life styles preventing the influence of natural Magnetism to a great extent. This leads to Magnetism deficiency in human body, which is causing various diseases. ¾¾ The Philosophy of Clinical Magnetology The entire Universe is created by the energy and sustained by the Force of energy. Even the human body, beyond its subatomic existence is nothing but the consolidation of energy. And any abnormality in the energy has to be corrected with energy itself. ¾¾ The Principle of Clinical Magnetology Our body has Electrical Energy. Electrical energy and Magnetism are the twin manifestations of the same basic energy. Every cell in our body is an electrical unit with a magnetic field of its own. The body, like the universe, is permeated with the force of magnetism. Any derangement in the field potential of our body manifests disease. ¾¾ Theory of Disease. Illness is the various Corrective actions embarked upon the body by the brain to save the body from abnormal functions of the cells. ¾¾ Theory of Causes of disease. 1. Theory of Treatment: The Treatment is helping to bring the activities and all the actions of the cells under the control of the brain. Magnetology as defined by Dr. Narendran is the science of treating diseases with discriminate application of Regulated Digital Magnetic Energy based in its curative, preventive, analgesic and antiinflammatory properties and supported by Dietetics, Meditation Music and Physical Exercise. ¾¾ Clinical Magnetology - The Fundamentals The fundamentals of Clinical Magnetology are sound. It has a well defined, highly developed, universally acclaimed Concept, Philosophy, Principle, Theory of disease and theory of causes of diseases, theory of treatment, its fabric are finely interwoven with ancient wisdom and modern scientific modernism, Vedic rationalism, sustained clinical experimentation, intense research development and unbelievable therapeutic success rates. Clinical Magnetology stands for the highest ethical and moral standards in therapeutic practice. It believes in a tri-level, holistic approach to diseases. It is soft, gentle and spiritual. ¾¾ The Uniqueness of Clinical Magnetology Clinical Magnetology has been designed as an independent treatment system. However the drugless, unique nature of Clinical Magnetology makes it an ideal Complimentary Treatment System, compatible with any other medical discipline. \ practitioner of any pathy can practice Clinical Magnetology, without compromising his identity and he will ensure wonderful results to his patients. Old age

Hearing Loss and Aging While many of the physical facilities diminish with aging, the most prominent two are vision and hearing Aging results in both macroscopic and microscopic changes to various organs of human being. Growth and aging are part and parcel of the life cycle. Due to advancements in the medical field providing antidotes to the worst of infections, the average life span of man has increased. Aging has been looked by man in several ways –scientifically studying the effect of aging on various aspects – biological, cognitive, etc. providing protection to them physically and psychologically, providing additional facilities like veteran concessions etc. While many of the physical facilities diminish with aging, the most prominent two are vision and hearing. Unlike vision – where the peripheral organs like retina get effected resulting in cataract, for hearing it is more complicated. For the hearing – the external mechanisms and organs like the pinna (ear), earn canal, middle ear , do show anatomical variations but do not affect hearing much. Hearing is predominantly affected by the degenerative changes in the cochlea and auditory nerve. Unlike visual defects due to cataract that could be operated, hearing impairment due to aging is an irreversible phenomenon. No medication or operation is ever advised. The old age patients if not rehabilitated by means of wearing hearing aids will become depressed, irritable, paranoiac (suspicious) that others are talking about them and socially aloof and lonely. Hearing loss due to old age is called Presbyacusis. The foremost step in the evaluation of these patients is a thorough hearing examination by a qualified audiologist. A hearing test is a very simple test just like the eye tests and does not involve complex procedure. A hearing examination will reveal the amount and type of hearing loss the individual is having in each ear. Also in old age for a long the hearing loss goes undetected as its specific to higher frequency. The initial symptoms of a hearing loss are increasing difficulty to understand people in a group (family gatherings); hearing the words but not obtaining clarity of speech. Often the elderly hearing impaired thinks that people are so soft spoken now-a-days or are mumbling to themselves. They increase TV volume to hear better which disturbs the family members. Also, they get into difficulties as they would have nodded in acknowledgement without understanding the contents of the speech. An audiologist will examine your hearing loss and also prescribe the most suitable hearing aids. You can either try ordinary traditional hearing aids. For

30

www.bangalorehealthtv.com

greater satisfaction and under the consultation of your audiologist advanced signal processing hearing aids can be tried that automatically adjusts the amount of amplification and makes it comfortable to you all the time. These types of hearing aids are especially suited to old aged as they have dexterity problems and will not able to manipulate tiny volume controls as expected. Also in old age there could be an abnormal discomfort/intolerance experience to loud sounds called ‘recruitment.’ Standard hearing aids at these times can be uncomfortable, as they would amplify the loud sounds above the discomfort levels. Hearing loss can also be progressive with aging. If hearing changes, programmable hearing aids can be reprogrammed. Also they constantly adjust the amount of gain so that softer sounds can be more easily heard while avoiding discomfort from louder sounds. Another major problem with old age is its frequency specific hearing loss and phonemic regression. Old age patients require greater time and slower rate of speech to understand speech better. Although no hearing aid can eliminate background noise, programmable hearing aids with multi-channels, dual microphones and advance signal processing circuits have been shown to enhance speech understanding and ease of listening for many users. And for those who are old but young at heart, they also have a choice of models of the least visible hearing aids. Prolonged periods of hearing loss without interventions and certain nerve deficits may also lead to word discrimination disability. Although fitted with the hearing aids, some training sessions on auditory discrimination and lip reading skills may have to be conducted with these less fortunate patients. In a country like India, where family members are very caring and respectful towards their aged, the ordeals of the family member to cope with the hearing impaired can be eased by counseling and suggestions by the audiologist. Family members can talk slowly and softly, to help the hearing aid user adjust successfully to a fuller and happier life. Many aged hearing impaired individuals choose to deprive themselves of better hearing because of a stigma they wrongfully attach to wearing of hearing aids. This is tragic when assistance is so readily available and as simple as buying a spectacle. As a saying goes, no on can predict to what heights you can soar, even you will not know until you spread your wings. One should make an attempt to rediscover the world of sound.

Alternatively other terms used are Work Related Upper Limb Disorder (WRULD) or Computer Related Injury (CRI). Risk Segments for RSI: Anybody who works on the computer for more than an hour a day is at risk. The people like software engineers, call centre staff, bank employees etc., are at greater risk. Even children, since they are using computers both for academics and games, are at risk. According to a specialist in RSI “RSI and other work related disorder arise from ordinary arm and hand movements such as bending, straightening, gripping, holding, twisting, clenching and reaching. These are the common movements in our daily activities. What makes them hazardous in work situations is their continual repetition e.g., typing on keyboard, often in a forceful manner and most of all, the speed of the movements and the lack of time for recovery between them”. Common Symptoms of RSI : Constant pain, numbness, stiffness, tingling in the fingers, forearms, arms, head, neck, wrists, shoulders, jaws, strain in the eye, fatigue, heaviness or weakness in hands or forearms. ¾¾ Danger signals ªª The problem is a serious occupational health

concern across the World and no one is immuned to RSI. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics noted that RSI accounted for 60-70% of all reported work related illness since 1991. Recent studies revealed that 20-25% amongst the computer users world wide, both vocational and recreational, have symptoms of RSI. Initially the problem starts slowly and if neglected it may cripple and ruin the life of young computer users from working or leading normal lives. Few practical remedies: RSI can be prevented by educating people about the sensible workstation design. Everybody should be aware about the problem of RSI and get educated about the hazards. To encourage computer users not to ignore aches and pains. They should know how to use it correctly and safely to prevent the problems from developing. Right approach and policy towards proper job design, good work place design, tools and equipment design, specially designed chairs are required to be implemented. Alternatively give rest to your hands. Sometimes work with your right hand giving some rest to the left and vice versa. When you have no work, don’t play any computer game or surf the net. Take rest by keeping yourself away from the computer. Always remember to take 5 minutes rest after every hour of work. In the rest period close your eyes and do some relaxation or walk around here and there for a change.

SYNERGIZE PRINCIPLES OF CREATIVE COOPERATION Simply defined, Synergy means the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It catalyzes, unifies and unleashes the greatest powers within people. All the habits or principles we are discussing prepare us to create the miracle of synergy. Synergy stems from the creative process we pursue and it is also the most terrifying part because we don’t know exactly what1 s going to lead. We don’t know what new challenges we will find. It takes an enormous amount of internal security to begin with the spirit of adventure, the spirit of discovery, the spirit of creativity. The challenge to follow this principle is to apply the principles of creative cooperation, which we often learn from nature, in our social interactions. Our

family life is an excellent platform to observe and practice this mode of endeavour. The very way a man and a woman bring a child into the world is synergistic. As in life synergy is of much importance in the workdom of business. When we incorporate this approach in our business the outcome is sheer excellence. It helps us to release an incredible creative enthusiasm. And once we have experienced real synergy, we are never quite the same again, we know the possibility of having other such mind-expanding adventure in the future. We simply open our mind to new happenings.

Boiled rice is more nutritive than raw rice. Idlis prepared out of boiled rice are very good even for patients suffering from high fever. Rice can be roasted, cooked and given to patients after draining excess water in the cooked rice. This is easily digestible. Gruel prepared out of roasted rice or puffed rice can be given to a patient a couple of days after the onset of fever. Newly harvested rice is not fit for consumption as it creates digestive problems. It is best to use rice which has been preserved at least for six months after harvesting. Rice should be cooked with just sufficient water. Draining off excess water from cooked rice is a bad practice, as all the nutrients are lost in this process. Rice should be chewed well and eaten either with milk or butter-milk. There is a possibility of suffering from digestive problems if rice is eaten in any other form. Curds rice is a delicious healthy dish, especially when you travel. Mix wellcooked rice and curds. Add coriander leaves, crushed ginger, finely chopped onions, salt and pepper powder to taste. Season the mixed rice with green chillies, mustard seeds and ghee. Add a little lemon juice and mix the whole thing well. Cook two handfuls of unpolished rice in the night. Next morning mix it with thick creamy curds and eat it, first thing in the morning for a period of three days to cure partial headache (migraine). Patients suffering from digestive problems derive great benefit from taking a cup of rice gruel mixed with equal quantity of butter milk and one mashed banana, twice a day. Prickly heat can be cured by washing the affected part of the body with water in which rice has been soaked and washed. Soak coarsely ground old broken rice in water. When it is fully soaked, squeeze it well and drain the water into a vessel. Mix a little coriander powder and sugar candy in it, squeeze the powder well; filter and give it to pregnant women to stop vomiting. You can feed it to children to stop cough and wheezing. The ashes of rice husk are being used in the preparation of tooth powders for a very long time. Although it may clean the teeth, it has an abrasive effect on the enamel covering the teeth. The gums also decay in course of time. Therefore it is not good to use the tooth powder which contains the ashes of rice husk

RICE There are several varieties of rice which we use in our daily diet. However, unpolished rice is the best from the point of view of health. Most of the nutrients are lost when rice is polished. Handpounded rice is rich in vitamins and therefore is best suited for human consumption. Rice bran which contains all the nutrients is lost when rice is polished. Those who consume such rice are prone to suffer from various illnesses like indigestion, nervous weakness, Beri-Beri, diabetes, etc,,

Understanding Hypertension ªª What is blood pressure? Blood pressure is the force of blood against the artery walls; arteries are blood vessels that supply blood from heart to the body. Blood pressure rises and falls throughout trie day but normal blood pressure is 120mmHg systolic (Systolic blood pressure is the pressure exerted on arteries when heart contracts’) and 80mmHg diastolic blood pressure(Diastolic blood pressure is the pressure when heart rest between the heart beats). ªª What is hypertension? Increase in blood pressure than it should be is called as high blood pressure also known as HYPERTENSION. Hypertension is a risk factor for cardiovascular disorder, kidney disease and stroke.’ ªª What are the sign & symptoms of hypertension? High blood pressure usually has no signs or symptoms but occasionally headaches do occur. Hence hypertension is also called as silent killer because it continues to harm the heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body without any sign and symptoms. Some health conditions, as well as lifestyle and genetic factors, contribute to the risk for developing high blood pressure. The risk factors for hypertension are: 1. Old age: Blood pressure tends to increase with age, Male older than 45 years & female older than 55 years are prone to have increase blood pressure 2. Over weight and obesity: Weight more than that is considered normal is a risk factor for hypertension 3. Gender: Adult women have lesser risk than adult men but younger women are more prone to hypertension than men, Age 60 years or older the the tendency is similar in men and women 4. Heart disease: Heart failure: Condition where heart fails to pumb enough blood forme body, Heart Attack 2. Stroke: A stroke occurs when blood flow to an area in the brain ceases and people having hypertension are four to six times more prone to have a stroke 3. Kidney disease: Kidney failure: Blood vessels in the kidney gets narrowed leading to kidney failure 4. Eye disease: ‘Untreated hypertension can damge the eyesight causing damage to the blood vessel to rentina, this is known as hypertensive retinopathy. 5. Aneurysms: An aneurysm is an abnormal bulge in the wall of an artery and Common spots for aneurysms are the main / artery that carries blood frorn the heart to the body: the

These habits included ÂÂ Following a healthy diet ÂÂ Being physically active ÂÂ Maintaining a healthy weight ÂÂ Quitting smoking ÂÂ Managing stress and learning to cope with stress Medication: ‘Today’s blood pressure medicines can safely help most people control their blood pressure. These medicines are easy to take. The side effects, if any, tend to be minor. These medications are decided by the treating physician. In case of any side effects it is essential to report to the doctor since continuation or stopping of hypertensive medicine is decided by the treating physician only. Patient should not stop these medications on their own.’ Blood pressure medicines work in different ways to lower blood pressure. Some remove extra fluid and salt from the body to lower blood pressure. Others slow down the heartbeat or relax and widen blood vessels. Often, two or more medicines work better than one.

PIMPLES! TOUCH ME NOT

Ance is a skin disorder that spoils the happiness of most of the teenagersespecially girls. In fact it disturbs the life and takes off their sleep also.

¾¾

What is Acne? Acne is a skin disorder that usually occurs in teenagers and young adults. It usually affects face, neck, back, chest, arms & shoulder. Acne is a term that is used to describe several skin lesions namely white head, blackheads, pimples, red or yellow spots, acne vulgaris and pustules. Acne affects people of all skin colours. The processes that cause acne are exactly the same in people with black or brown or white skin but the impact is altered by the skin pigmentation. It is a very common disorder that affects about 80 % of young people. It is less common in people after 30. ¾¾ The skin The surface of the skin has lots of small sebaceous glands just below the surface. These glands make an oily substance called sebum that keeps the skin smooth and supple.

40

www.bangalorehealthtv.com

Tiny pores (holes in the skin) allow the sebum to come to the skin surface. Hairs also grow through these pores. ¾¾ Causes Acne is caused by the overactivity of the sebaceous glands that secrete oily substances onto the skin. These sebaceous glands are sensitive to blood levels of a hormone called testosterone, found naturally in both men and women. Testosterone in people prone to acne triggers the sebaceous glands to produce an excess of sebum. At the same time, the dead skin cells lining the openings of the hair follicles (the tubes that hold the hair) are not shed properly and plug the follicles. These two effects combined cause a build-up of oil in the hair follicles. This causes blackheads and whiteheads to form. In some people, the build-up of oil in the hair follicles creates an ideal environment for a bacterium called Propionibacterium acnes to grow. These bacteria normally live harmlessly on skin but when this ideal environment is created, they grow. They feed off the sebum and produce substances that cause a response from body’s immune system. This inflames the skin and creates the redness associated with spots. In more severe ‘inflammatory acne’, cysts develop beneath the skin’s surface. These acne cysts can rupture, spreading the infection into nearby skin tissue. This can result in scarring. ¾¾ What makes acne worse? There are a number of things that can make acne worse. These include the following: ÂÂ Picking and squeezing the spots may cause further inflammation and scarring. ÂÂ Stress can make acne worse in some people.

ÂÂ

In women, outbreaks may be affected by the hormonal changes that occur during the menstrual cycle. ÂÂ Excessive production of male hormones such as testosterone from conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome may be another cause in women. ÂÂ Some contraceptive pills may make acne worse. In women some medicines can make acne worse. For example, some medicines taken for epilepsy, and steroid creams and ointments that are used for eczema. Do not stop a prescribed medicine even if one suspect it is making acne worse. ÂÂ Steroids can cause acne as a side-effect. ¾¾ Treatment Acne may cause considerable emotional distress but there is a range of treatment options to help tackle the problem. No treatment will completely ‘cure’ acne. The aims of treatment are to prevent new spots forming, to improve those already present, and to prevent infection and scarring. ¾¾ Home treatment It is important to keep spot-prone areas clean, so wash the affected area twice a day with an unperfumed cleanser. The skin needs a certain amount of oil to maintain its natural condition, so avoid aggressive washing with strong soaps. There are a number of over-the-counter remedies available from pharmacies to treat mild acne. These usually contain antibacterial agents such as benzoyl peroxide (eg. Clearasil). Medicines - that dry up the oil or promote skin peeling is applied on the affected part of skin. Antibiotics are applied if the acne is infected. Some of the antibiotics are available in market in the forms of lotion, gel and oral tablets. Some of them are,

Antibiotics: Azithromycin tab. (Azee 500), Erythromycin(Erytop gel), Doxycyline(doxy -1) Isotretinoin Caps (Isotroin). Gel and Cream: Lincomycin (Lynx Gel), Tretinoin (Retino – A Cream), Herbal (Clarina Cream), Benzoylperoxide (persol gel), Clinmycin(climycin gel), Adapalene gel ( Aclene gel). Several preparations which have combinations of the above drugs are also available (Femcinol-A). The treatment depends on the severity & stage of acne. Some types of oral contraceptive tablets help women who have acne. A combination of the usual pill hormone called ethinylestradiol with cyproterone acetate (eg: Diane-35, Krimson-35, Ginnette 35) suppresses male hormone activity so is often used in women with acne Surgical Treatment- If the acne does not heal after a few days and produces cysts surgical intervention including professional (chemical) skin peeling maybe required. Sometimes removal of eruptions, scars and removal or drainage of cysts maybe necessary. ¾¾ Prevention of Pimples The tendency to develop acne is inherited. Although acne cannot be prevented, careful cleanliness can help to lessen the effects. ÂÂ Clean the skin gently but thoroughly with soap and water to remove dirt or make-up. Use mild soap .ex: Dove, Savlon etc… ÂÂ Use a clean cloth to dry the face every day to prevent bacterial re-infection. ÂÂ Use steam or warm, moist compresses to open up clogged pores. ÂÂ Don’t squeeze, scratch, pick, or rub lesions. These activities can increase skin damage. ÂÂ Wash hands before and after caring for skin lesions to reduce the chance of infection. ÂÂ Identify and avoid anything that aggravates acne. This may include oily foods, lotions and make-up. Avoid greasy cosmetics or creams, which can aggravate acne. ÂÂ Stress can add to the acne problem. Avoid stress. ¾¾ Conclusion A thing of beauty is joy for ever. Beautiful face is the index of real beauty of a lady. One black spot- a pimple may ruine the entire beauty of a lovely face. Try to prevent this pimple by taking proper preventions.

Life style Facial massage is one of the most relaxing therapies designed to provide tension release, while stimulating the skin.

FACIAL MASSAGE Besides working as a beauty therapy, it is very beneficial in perking up the circulation and revitalising the facial muscles. It is increasingly being used by men and women all over the world. ¾¾ Benefits of a Facial Massage ÂÂ It can help improve the overall appearance of skin. ÂÂ Stimulates circulation, which nourishes the skin and rids it of impurities. ÂÂ Cleanses away dead surface cells. ÂÂ Reduces puffiness and tones, firms, refines pores and helps skin retain moisture. ÂÂ Helps to relieve muscle tension and promote relaxation. ÂÂ A relaxing facial benefits a person physically and psychologically. ÂÂ It can help to reduce puffy, sagging areas and rejuvenates the skin. ¾¾ Facial Massage for Beauty A facial massage is a great way to de-stress after a long day. For a facial massage, you can use any kind of cream, or vegetable oil, or a blend of essential oils for added benefit. Start by mixing your own blend of essential oils that is perfectly suited for your skin type. Clean your face and then cover it with your personal blend. Massage the oils into your face using upward and outward motions. There is no proper way to massage but some things you may want to try are: Finding the acupressure points and pressing with fingertips, following the

42

curves of your skull with a firm, steady pressure, massaging your jaw and the base of your skull (all the way around the back), and massaging your whole face in small circular motions. Don’t forget to try using all parts of your hands including your palms and thumbs. The only “rule” is to use upward and outward motions (down on the nose). To make your own personal blends, mix base oil with essential oils suited for your skin type. Blend one teaspoon of base oil with 1-3 drops of essential oil, You may also want to try blending Vitamin E oil with your base oil for an effective facial oil. ¾¾ Blends for Different Skin Types For Normal Skin : Base oil: sweet almond oil. Essential Blend : lavender, sandalwood, bergamot. For Oily Skin : Base oil: sweet almond oil. Essential Blend : lemon, cypress, basil. For Dry Skin : Base oil: peach kernel oil. Essential Blend : lavender, frankincense, geranium. ¾¾ Who Can Have a Massage? Most people will benefit from holistic facial treatment. There are, however, a few conditions, where it would be unwise to have one. They include skin disorders, recent face, or neck operations, or fractures, high or low blood pressure, diabetes, fever, sunburn, thrombosis and tumours. Pimples, or acne should be treated with care, while massaging. Don’t pinch, or burst them, instead avoid the general area and continue with the rest of the face.

A stress release facial massage The actual massage techniques are derived from the areas of lymph drainage, energy balancing, and a reverse reflexology of the nervous system (beginning with the head rather than the feet). The recipient is seated in a reclining position with legs slightly elevated for proper spinal relief. The massage areas include the face, scalp, neck, shoulder blades, and arms. The lymph canals are drained toward the mastoid just under the ears and down to the lymph nodes under the collarbone. Acupressure points in all the areas covered are also incorporated in the massage to ensure stress reduction and to eliminate blockages in energy flow. This balances the electro-magnetic field, which relaxes the nervous system, and this in turn relaxes the muscles. It also reduces pain and increases the body’s ability to heal. The massage treatment begins with surface cleansing of the skin, which removes surface debris. It is a quiet time for the recipient of the facial massage, allowing a pause from noise and cares. The mind also seems to be cleansed by the subliminal massage, which places a person in a wonderful meditative state. The massaging action should be constant, for the entire duration of the treatment, which lasts for about half an hour. After cleansing, begins the deep porecleaning phase of the massage, which can be done by using an Alpha Hydroxy acid containing granular cream. This granular cream exfoliates the dead skin cells on the face, and should be followed by warm towel packs which stimulates blood circulation bringing increased flexibility to the pores. This is a transition state and also prepares nerve endings for the massage. Next a conditioning clay, or hydrating mask is applied, which draws out any remaining liquefied impurities in the pores while firming and tightening the skin. The mask is left on for three to seven minutes, and then rinsed repeatedly with clear warm water until completely cleansed away. Mildly sedative, it has a vaso-constrictive action on the capillary structures, which acts to texture the skin. A toning rinse is the next step, used to close the pores and bring the skins pH into balance. This toning rinse breaks down complex oils enabling them to easily rise to the skins surface along with any residue of waste products from within the skin. Then a protective day-cream is applied, which will normalize the skin and help it to retain moisture evenly. Finally, the hair covering is removed and a light scalp massage with gentle tugging brings the recipient back to gradual awareness. The final result is an intense sense of serene energy, which comes from the internal organization and achievement of facial fitness. The exercise massage accelerates your skins natural cell renewal, which remoulds loose contours and restores elasticity and radiance. Dermatologists and plastic

surgeons use this massage to alleviate anxiety and fully prepare the skin and muscles for treatment. ¾¾ A DIY Facial Massage Remember that the facial massage requires three kinds of basic movements-stroking, pinching and stimulating. Once you have mastered the three, there is no looking back. Although, these are the basic strokes, one can devise new ones to suit oneself according to individual needs. Another important thing to remember is that the strokes should always be upwards and outwards. ÂÂ Using alternate hands, sweep from

collarbone to jaw bone starting at left side, ending at right. This movement is commonly known as alternative stroking up the neck. ÂÂ Using alternate hands, start from the left side of the neck continuously stroking in the upward direction to finish on the right side of the neck. Stimulate the skin by using the back of your hands and loosely rolling your ringers up the cheek. This can also be used on the neck and under the chin. ÂÂ Cupping of the jaw : The palm of the left hand should be cupped in a concave shape over the right hand side of the jaw. Now, stroke across to the left side till your fingers come up towards the ears. Now, cup the right hand and take it to the right side. With your thumb and forefinger, gently pinch the skin along the jawbone and under the chin. This is very stimulating and helps prevent a double chin. ÂÂ Cheek triangle : Using your finger weep under the sides of the mouth towards the ears returning down to the centre of the chin.

using the thumb cushion in circular movements (Clock-wise) start moving towards the forehead finishing at the top of the forehead. Now, drain across towards the temples using pressure. Release the pressure and wait. Using ring fingers under the eyes, circle around to the starting point. Place index fingers above lips, second finger below the mouth, the ring and the little fingers on the chin and below. Place both your hands to meet at the fingers. Keeping this contact move slowly apart from the centre of the mouth towards the temples. (Do not bend fingers) when the fingertips reach the temple apply pressure for 3 to 4 seconds on it, only to repeat the movement. Now, move your palms around the deltoid muscles up to the back of the shoulders. Continue to the occipital point at the www.bangalorehealthtv.com

¾¾ The Vision-massage Connection To understand the eye-body relationship, we need to experience it aesthetically. Most of the time we are not aware of it; we feel the effects of seeing only later, in the form of eyestrain, eye fatigue, neck tension and other related problems. It is possible, however, to learn to feel immediately, when we strain our eyes or the muscles surrounding them, and to stop ourselves from doing so. A good place to begin is with the muscles closest to the eyes and most directly affected by seeing—the facial muscles. A massage of the face, with particular attention to several specific places seems to have an especially good effect on vision. It has only recently been discovered that these are the same points used by the Chinese in acupressure massage—a facial massage, particularly as a preparation for palming should help relieve a lot of eye strain. One of the most important functions of palming is, in fact, relaxation of the muscles around the eyes. ¾¾ Try This Massage Massage of the whole face influences the circulation around the eyes. Rub your hands together until they are warm, and then massage your face with your fingertips, gently at first, and then more firmly as your muscles also begin to warm up. The pressure at first should be just firm enough to let you feel whether a spot is tense, or painful, but not hard enough to make pain worse. Spend at least a couple of minutes on each separate area, noticing how your touch feels and what affect it has. You may feel a deep tension, or pain, a superficial tightness, a pleasant sense of release, or numbness, which is also a sensation. Begin with the jaw, and continue over the other areas. Massage the whole area from the point of the chin outward along the jawbone, in front of and behind the ears. Yoij can open and close your jaws while doing this, to help stretch and relax the strong jaw muscles. This may make you feel like yawning, so yawn as much as you want-it is very relaxing for your face. Now work up from the bridge of the nose outward along the cheekbones toward the temples. From the bridge of the nose, work out along the eyebrows, massaging above, below and directly on the brow. Spend a little extra time on the point between the eyebrows; this area gathers a lot of tension from the act of seeing. To relieve this tension, massage in long firm strokes across the forehead-and, very gently, with small circular motions, in the temple area. Stroke lightly from the temples up into your scalp, imagining that you are drawing tension away from your eyes. After ten minutes, or so of massage, your face will be glowing and tingling from the increased blood flow. AYURPHARMA

staring, and brief lapses of awareness. These are frequently so brief that they escape detection .It is more common in children . Most individuals with epilepsy have normal intelligence. It is well established that persons with epilepsy are not mentally ill. However, some people may have epilepsy secondary to a brain injury .In such persons, the brain injury may itself be a cause for some disabilities. Epilepsy does not spread from person -to person by any physical means such as touching or by coughing. Investigation: A detailed history is obtained on the number of seizure attacks, nature of attacks and possible triggers. The person is made to undergo blood test, Electroencephalography (EEG) and brain imaging to determine the type and location of epilepsy and any causes that may predispose to epilepsy. Treatment: The good news is that four out of every five people with epilepsy can have their seizures controlled by proper medication. There are several drugs that are available and the doctor makes a decision based on several factors such as the age of the patients, associated illness and type of epilepsy. Withdrawal of the medication may be considered when seizures have been reliably controlled for atlest 2 years, and in few after 3years. Do not stop medication unless your doctor instructs you to do so. ¾¾ Epilepsy in children Seizures are the commonest neurological symptom in paediatrics. Epilepsy occurs in 0.5-1.0% of the general population .When included febrile convulsions. (seizures during fever), seizures occur in 3-5% of all children .In more than half of the people with epilepsy, the disease starts in childhood. There are some additional problems associated with frequent seizure attacks in children. During childhood, the brain undergoes growth and development .unfortunately seizures can affect or alter the brain development and functions esp lengthy or frequent attacks. The good news is that more than half of all childhood epilepsy disappears over time.
