Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid cancer is a malignant tumor arising from thyroid cells (follicular and parafollicular cells). It occurs in all age groups and it is the fastest increasing cancer in both men and women. Survival rates are increasing and it is higher in younger patients
6
www.bangalorehealthtv.com
The thyroid gland is located in the front of the neck just below the Adam’s apple. It is brownish red in color and has two halves called lobes connected by an isthmus giving it a butterfly appearance. This small gland weighing less than an ounce, has enormously large functions in the human body. It produces thyroid hormones which help in the metabolism and control of growth. These hormones are dependent on the element Iodine that is absorbed by the body from food and water. ¾¾ Risk Factors ªª Higher incidence in women ªª Exposure to radiation especially in childhood ªª Iodine deficiency ªª Obesity ªª Family history ¾¾ Types ªª -Papillary most commmon types (80 to 90%), occurs in middle age, slow growing with good prognosis ªª -Follicular ªª -Medullary – seen in 5 to 10%, can be familial, if so is associated with other malignancies eg. pheochromocytoma (tumor of the adrenal gland) and parathyroid tumors. ªª -Anaplatic - least common, only 1-2%, very aggressive, rapid growing with poor prognosis. ¾¾ Symptoms Thyroid cancers rarely produce symptoms associated with other commoner thyroid diseases. It mainly causes 1. Swelling in the neck 2. Swollen neck lymph nodes 3. Pressure symptoms like hoarseness of voice, difficulty in swallowing and difficulty in breathing. 4. Foreign body sensetion while swallowing 5. Rarely neck pain ¾¾ Diagnosis Diagnosis is made usullay through Ultrasonography of the neck and FNAC of the swelling. ¾¾ Treatment Surgery Surgery is the mainstay of treatment Radioactive iodine Used mainly for destroying residual thyroid cells after surgery or to tackle distant spread ¾¾ Prognosis Prognosis is good for papillary and follicular varients, whereas it is very poor for anaplastic.

Child care Tips for parents
Children are our Nation’s most precious resource, but as children, they often lack the skills to protect themselves
Tips every parent needs to keep their kids safe from preventable injuries.
¾¾
Child safety inside the house Home -- it’s where children grow and learn, the place where they find comfort, love and care. It’s where they can see, touch, explore and experience the world around them, so their minds and bodies develop properly. It’s also a place where children need to feel safe. Find safety tips to keep your child safe, no matter where they are. ªª Keep all sharp utensils, wastebaskets, and household cleaning products in a latched drawer or cabinet. ªª Never leave standing water in the tub or sink. It takes very little water to create a drowning hazard ªª Ensure that the bathroom door doesn’t lock. If privacy is required, install a flip lock at eye level to prevent people from entering. ªª While using your bathtub, keep all electrical appliances such as electrical razors, toothbrushes, hair blowers, curling irons, radios and especially electrical heaters unplugged and locked in a cabinet, away from the reach of children. Water and electricity are a fatal mix. ªª Everyone who buys toys should remember that playthings are safe only when they are chosen according to a child’s age, interest and skill level. ªª Place all lighters and matches in a locked drawer or metal box. Don’t play games with fire. Teach your children the dangers of lighters and matches and to notify you anytime they find a lighter or matches. ¾¾ Child safety outside the house Playgrounds and outdoor play equipment offer kids fresh air, friends, and exercise. Child Safety and Accident Prevention Concern - encouraging children to play outdoors whenever possible while keeping them safe. ªª Monitor children’s activities and participate with them. Don’t allow children to play alone in isolated areas. ªª Teach your children to refuse anything from strangers, including money, gifts or rides. Know

where new items come from. Find safe places for your child to play outside. Child career Plan to meet the increasing educational and other needs of growing children. It should be designed to make tomorrow of the young ones much more educated and highly qualified ªª Fill your child’s world with reading. ªª Encourage him to express his opinion, talk about his feelings, and make choices ªª Show enthusiasm for your child’s interests and encourage her to explore subjects that fascinate her. ªª Provide him with play opportunities that support different kinds of learning styles — from listening and visual learning ªª Ask about what he’s learning in school, not about his grades or test scores ªª Celebrate achievements, no matter how small. ªª Focus on strengths, encouraging developing talents. ªª Turn everyday events into learning opportunities. ªª Show enthusiasm for your child’s interests and encourage her to explore subjects that fascinate her ¾¾ Child health care tips It is designed to learn about healthy food and activity of children. ªª Parents teach children how to eat for life. Children need a wide variety of foods for a well-balanced diet. Snacks are an important part of a healthy diet for active children. Make snacks nutritious, not just high in energy. ªª Soft drinks, juice and cordial are all high in sugar with little other nutrition and are not appropriate for children ªª Monitor their growth regularly.

Women health .
WOMEN AND NUTRITION Even after 59 years of Independence, more than 55% of women are suffering from malnutrition. This is the special occasion to focus on the various forms of malnutrition among girls and women. It is all our responsibility to ensure proper nutrition to girls and women thus build a strong Nation.
Women and children are the worst sufferers of the various forms of malnutrition because of their increased nutritional needs and low social power. Nutrition of women is not only important for their own health but it determines the nutrition and health of the future generations also. ¾¾ Reason for malnutrition among women ªª Gender discrimination within home is often manifested in unequal access to food and inferior quality of food provided to girl children. ªª Early marriage, ªª Early pregnancy aggravates both under-nutrition and anaemia and result in adverse outcome of pregnancy including low birth weight baby. ªª Frequent menstruation, pregnancy, delivery, lactation, abortion and still births, and menorrhagea. ¾¾ Economics of nutrition in women With fast economic growth, India will probably move into an era when investment in “human capital” is seriously assessed for its economic viability. Considering that healthy people are productive and contribute positively to the development process, the need for proper human nutrition can no longer take a back seat. A healthy girl child and woman is an asset to the Nation. If women become healthy and strong they can give birth to the healthy baby (Birth weight and IQ will

be better) who are asset to the Nation. Development of a Nation depends not on wealth it has, depends on manpower it has. ¾¾ Present Nutritional status of Indian women 55% of women suffer from Under nutrition/ malnutrition, 52% suffer from anaemia More than 50% suffer from deficiency of Iodine. ¾¾ Nutritional status of Indian women compare to other countries. Recent evidence suggests that under nutrition levels in India are among the highest in the world. Indian nutritional statistics stands low compare to other countries. The overall state of nutrition and health in India is bad enough, the situation is even worse in the poorer states. Poverty, lack of education is the main prime sectors which responsible for malnutrition in India. ¾¾ Nutrition for Girls and Women Women and girl requires more care and they require balance diet because they undergone several steps in their life cycle such as puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, delivery, lactation, abortion & still births, and menopause. Pregnancy is the most critical period as requires extra calories for both mother and a baby. Even before pregnancy begins, nutrition is a primary factor in the health of mother and baby. A well-balanced diet before conception contributes to a healthy pregnancy. ¾¾ Major problems faced by girls and women ªª Under nutrition/malnutrition ªª Anemia due to iron deficiency ªª Goiter due to Iodine deficiency ªª Low birth weight of children due to malnutrition www.bangalorehealthtv.com

A Balanced Diet A well balanced diet that is high in fibre, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and low in saturated fats will help a mother to stay fit and supply the foetus with all the essential nutrients for healthy development A balanced diet consists of food from the five basic food groups in the correct proportions. That is: ªª Cereal group - (Rice, Jowar, Ragi, Wheat, Bajra, Maize, Roots, Tubers) - important nutrients- CHO, vitamin B (Deficiency can cause Berry-Berry). Ragi is rich in iron. Rice and wheat should not be polished. Rice and wheat husk contains vitamin B. Red bread is better than white bread which contain Thiamine, Niacin, Iron. ªª Fats and oils group - (margarine, oils, mayonnaise, salad dressing) - important nutrients - essential fatty acids, vitamin A (Deficiency can cause Night blindness), Vitamin D, Vitamin E. ªª Meat and meat alternatives - (meat, chicken, fish, eggs), For vegetarian’s legumes, including leafy vegetables which are rich in iron, dhal, Soya contains important nutrient -proteins, Iron (Deficiency can cause anaemia in both pregnant women and child), vitamin B12 (Strict vegetarians may need to supplement their diet with this vitamin, as it contained mostly in fish, meat and milk. Symptoms of deficiency are feelings of weakness, numbness, and shortness of breath). ªª Milk and milk products - (milk, cheese, yoghurts - important nutrients Calcium (insufficiency of calcium lead to poor development of pelvic bones resulting in difficult childbirth due to obstructed labour), phosphorus, vitamins. Fruit and vegetables - (all types - important nutrients include vitamin & minerals especially vitamin A, vitamin C (Rich in citrus fruits or juices, goose berry (amla)) and fibre. nutrients. ¾¾ Tips for healthy eating ªª Eat plenty of vegetables, Fruits and vegetables contain all the necessary vitamins and minerals needed for a healthy child. ªª Vitamins: Many people take vitamins to be healthier, but by eating the right foods (namely fruits and vegetables), vitamins become unnecessary. Anti-oxidants naturally found in fruits and vegetables can help prevent some types of cancer. ªª Herbs Culinary herbs are herbaceous (leafy) plants that add flavour and colour to all types of meals. They have also been used for centuries to preserve food due to the presence of antioxidant phytochemicals. ªª Healthy cooking tips. In many cases, favorite recipes can be modified so they offer a lower fat content. Non-stick cookware can be used to reduce the need for cooking oil. To keep valuable nutrients, microwave or steam your vegetables instead of boiling them. ªª Fibre regulates bowel activity, keeps mouth and jaws healthy and lowers blood cholesterol ªª Cancer and food. Some cancers are influenced by our daily diet. Cancers of the stomach, bowel, lung, prostate and uterus are more likely to develop if diet is high fat and low fibre. ªª Calcium for your bones: Milk and foods produced from milk — cheese, yogurt, ice-cream and some custard — are the richest source of calcium. ªª Iron: Low intake of iron as common in India. This is particularly an issue in some groups of the population such as girls, women and vegetarians. Iron deficiency can cause fatigue and listlessness, and come sometimes lead to anaemia. ªª Vegetarians need to monitor their food intake to make sure that they get enough iron, zinc, B vitamins, protein, vitamin D and calcium. ¾¾ Conclusion Good nutrition is important for everyone especially for Women and girls. They require extra nutritional nourishment due to their physical and physiological nature. Nutrition is the cornerstone of National Development. Healhy women can make nation strong and healthier. It is the duty of every girl child and women to get nutrition food.

Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD)
This disorder results in the loss of central vision only - peripheral fields are always maintained. The risk factors for ARMD are hypertension, smoking and family history of ARMD
¾¾
Age-related eye problem Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is the most common cause of vision loss in those over 50s and its prevalence increases with age. It is caused by degeneration of the macula, the central and most sensitive part of the retina at the back of the eye. ARMD affects mainly the macula which is the part of the retina that allows the eye to see fine details and also the center of the field of vision. Degeneration results from a partial breakdown of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) which is the insulating layer between the retina and the choroid (the layer of blood vessels behind the retina). The RPE acts as a selective filter to determine what nutrients reach the retina from the choroid. Many components of blood are harmful to the retina and are kept away from the retina by normal RPE. Breakdown of the RPE interferes with the metabolism of the retina, causing thinning of the retina (the “dry” phase of macular degeneration). These harmful elements may also promote new blood vessel formation and fluid leakage (the “wet” phase of
12
www.bangalorehealthtv.com
macular degeneration). This disorder results in the loss of central vision only - peripheral fields are always maintained. The risk factors for ARMD are hypertension, smoking and family history of ARMD. ¾¾ Symptoms of ARMD Distortions in objects which are looked at directly Bulges or curved appearance of a straight door Distorted print lines in book Adark or blank spot in the center of vision Fading of colors especially blue ¾¾ How to detect ARMD? As it is a silent disease, mostly it is picked up in a routine examination by an ophthalmologist. The retinal examination done by an ophthalmoscope will show the findings of this disease process. Fluorescein Angiography / ICG: photographs of macula are taken after injecting a dye in patient’s arm. The dye reaching the eye helps to clarify the type and extent of disease, including detail of abnormal vessels, leaks and membrane formations. ¾¾ What are the types of AMD? Dry AMD ; With dry macular degeneration, vision loss is usually gradual. These patients need to monitor their central vision regularly. If you notice any change in your vision, you should tell your eye doctor right away, as the dry form can change into the more damaging form which is wet (exudative) macular degeneration. While there is no medication or treatment for dry macular degeneration, some people
AYURPHARMA
March-2014
may benefit from vitamin supplements (anti-oxidants). Wet AMD: About ten percent of people who have macular degeneration have the wet form. This can cause more damage to your central vision than the dry form. Wet macular degeneration occurs when abnormal blood vessels begin to grow underneath the retina. This blood vessel growth is called choroidal neovascularization (CNV) because these vessels grow from the layer under the retina called the choroid. These new blood vessels may leak fluid or blood, blurring or distorting central vision. Vision loss from this form of macular degeneration may be faster and more noticeable than dry AMD. ¾¾ Can AMD be prevented? The exact cause of AMD is unknown. A healthy life style without smoking and a good diet may reduce the risk. ¾¾ How will I know I have AMD? Early reporting of new distortion or blurred vision should be reported to the eye doctor. The earlier the disease is detected, the more amenable it is to treatment. The earliest symptom is distortion of straight lines, making a grid pattern appear distorted. ¾¾ Other facilities: ªª Trans pupillary thermotherapy(TTT) ªª Photodynamic therapy(PDT) ªª High speed vitrectomy machine, CONSTELLATION®, with 5000cpm ªª Low visual aids and visual rehabilitation ªª Ocular genetics & counseling for retinal/macular dystrophies ¾¾ Treatment There is no permanent cure for most type of ARMD. In some cases ARMD may be active and then slow down or even stop progressing for many years. The aim is to keep a vigilant check on progression of disease and take measures to improve functional capability of the patient. ªª Nutrition: Eat fresh fruits, dark green leafy vegetables containing antioxidants are found

beneficial in patients with already in one eye with severe form of ARMD, ªª Sunlight: Blue rays of the spectrum seem to accelerate macular degeneration. Sunglasses with good UV filters for outdoor activities are recommended. ªª Smoking: Quit smoking, as this accelerates the process of wet ARMD ªª Early detection: Weekly monitoring of vision by Amsler grid-report if any change noticed (the development of wet type may need urgent treatment with laser or injections directly into the eye) ªª Laser treatment: Focal laser has the highest success rate in typical cases which are away from the center of the fovea. In this procedure a highenergy laser beam is used to destroy the fragile leaking blood vessels. ªª Photodynamic therapy - A drug called Verteporfm is injected into the arm and it reaches the blood circulation and gets collected in the abnormal new vessels present in the eye, it tends to stick to the surface of new abnormal blood vessels, which is then exposed to a laser. The drug gets activated and destroys the new blood vessels leading to slower decline in vision. This drug does not destroy the surrounding normal tissue and hence is better then laser treatment which was the mode of treatment in the past. However, treatment results often are temporary and may require re-treatment. Anti VEGF - most recent advancement in managing any form active wet ARMD. There are drugs available which should be taken with the consultation of doctors Low vision aids and lighting -These are Special optical devices eg. Magnifiers (hand held, desktops) which along with bright light make reading more comfortable in patients with less severe form of disease. There may not be of great help in severe form of ARMD

What is autism? According to medical dictionary Medline Plus Autism is a developmental disorder that appears by age three and that is variable in expression but is recognized and diagnosed by impairment of the ability to form normal social relationships, by impairment of the ability to communicate with others, and by stereotyped behaviour patterns especially as exhibited by a preoccupation with repetitive activities of restricted focus rather than with flexible and imaginative ones. Every creature in the universe came to existence to serve its definite purpose unknowingly. Every birth has a reason to finish the unfinished karmas. This is how the nature works. Treating autism in ayurveda is a long term course considering the treatment duration and its result expectation. The treatment adopted here will be for kaya(body), Manas(mind) and Atma (soul) together. As we won’t get any direct reference in classical books about autism most of the signs and symptoms are we get is related to impairment of Vata Dosha with involvement of Pitta and Kapha dosha. The mind being the master moving from sensory organs(jnanendriyas),organs of action(karmendriyas) and intellect(buddhi) regulates all the voluntary and involuntary actions by self. So any disturbance to the channels of mind which carry this action will lead to distortion of sensory perception and response at all the levels and leads to abnormal actions. ¾¾ What are some common signs of autism? ªª Impaired social interaction ªª Focusing on one item for longer duration ªª Indifferent social engagement ªª Lack of response

Avoiding Eye contact Lack of empathy Repetitive actions Other associated conditions like learning Disability The hallmark feature of ASD is impaired social interaction. As early as infancy, a baby with ASD may be unresponsive to people or focus intently on one item to the exclusion of others for long periods of time. A child with ASD may appear to develop normally and then withdraw and become indifferent to social engagement. Children with an ASD may fail to respond to their names and often avoid eye contact with other people. They have difficulty interpreting what others are thinking or feeling because they can’t understand social cues, such as tone of voice or facial expressions, and don’t watch other people’s faces for clues about appropriate behaviour. They may lack empathy. Many children with an ASD engage in repetitive movements such as rocking and twirling, or in selfabusive behaviour such as biting or head-banging. They also tend to start speaking later than other children and may refer to themselves by name instead of “I” or “me.” Children with an ASD don’t know how to play interactively with other children. Some speak in a sing-song voice about a narrow range of favourite topics, with little regard for the interests of the person to whom they are speaking. Children with characteristics of an ASD may have co-occurring conditions, including Fragile X syndrome (which causes mental retardation), tuberous sclerosis, epileptic seizures, Tourette syndrome, learning disabilities, and attention deficit disorder. About 20 to 30 percent of children with an ASD develop epilepsy by the time they reach adulthood. . This disease is usually get noticed by the parents

when their kids are not responding like a other kids which are in same age group and many times mistaken with other health issues. So there may be delay in diagnosing the disease. ¾¾ How autism is Treated in Ayurveda: it is very crucial to observe the agni of a person before starting treatment to ASD, The agni which is responsible for keeping the body out of toxins, i.e. stopping the formation of the toxins inside the body and eliminating the toxins already collected in the body. This will make ones body to function normally. The vital functions are supported and nourished by proper supply of the energy. This will be carried by various channels called srotas. The collection of toxins which creates blockage in channels thus obstructing the flow of energy to the vital organs. This will results in derangement of various physiological mechanisms. The vital elements of the body i.e. dhatus get polluted by the accumulation of the toxins and stars loosing its physiological response to the external world. When the mind is involved in this process it makes remarkeble changes to the responses and known as special or abnormal behaviour patterns. Ayurveda treatments include in the initial phase 1. External treatments 2. Internal medications The external treatments will help to eliminate toxins, clears the channels, nourishes the tissues etc... and the internal medication will help to correct the Agni and helps to absorb the needed nutrients with proper elimination of waste on time. The treatment principal is to create a healthy environment for the cells to function their normal physiological activities perfectly. The duration of the treatments will be usually advised for longer duration like one year to three years. Specific procedures has to be administered every month for specific days. ªª Basti: This is a procedure in which the medicine is introduced throgh the anus through Bastiyantra. Diabetes & Heart Diabetes is a disease in which the body’s blood glucose (sugar) level is too high. Normally, the body breaks down food into glucose and carries it to cells throughout the body. The cells use a hormone called insulin to turn the glucose into energy.
The statistics reveal that 1 in every 7 Indians has diabetes and 30% of all heart disease patients have diabetes. Heart disease in diabetes occurs at a younger age, is more extensive & is more difficult to treat. Good control of diabetes is essential to prevent onset & progress of coronary heart disease ¾¾ Risk factors of heart disease for diabetes People with diabetes tend to develop heart disease at an earlier age than other people. If you are middleaged and have type 2 diabetes chance of having a heart attack is high. Women who have not gone through menopause usually have less risk of heart disease than men of the same age. But women of all ages with diabetes have an increased risk of heart disease. High blood glucose levels over time can lead to increased deposits of fatty materials on the insides of the blood vessel walls. These deposits may affect blood

flow, increasing the chance of clogging and hardening of blood vessels. Blockage of the blood vessels and high blood glucose levels damage heart muscle and cause irregular heartbeats. It is called cardiomyopathy and in diabetes patient symptoms may be mild or absent in the early stages due to a condition in which the heart rate stays at the same level during exercise, inactivity, stress, or sleep. Also, nerve damage caused by diabetes may result in lack of pain during a heart attack. But later they may experience weakness, shortness of breath, a severe cough, fatigue, and swelling of the legs and feet. Diabetes can also interfere with pain signals normally carried by the nerves. The term “diabetic heart disease” (DHD) refers to heart disease that develops in people who have diabetes. ¾¾ Major types of heart disease common in people with diabetes:  coronary artery disease (CAD) and  Cerebral vascular disease. Gestational Diabetes If you had gestational diabetes, your blood sugar will generally return to normal after you baby is born. Sometimes it may remain high. Your doctor will test your blood sugar right after delivery and again after 6 weeks to know if your blood sugar level has returned to normal. But, you may be more likely to develop diabetes later in life as you get older. Have your fasting blood sugar tested every year to check for diabetes. In women who have had diabetes before the pregnancy, the blood sugar does not return to normal after delivery. Diabetes that develops for the first time during pregnancy is termed gestational diabetes. The word gestation means “the period of time between conception and birth i.e. during pregnancy.” If your blood sugar (glucose) becomes high when you are pregnant, but you have never had high blood sugar before, then you have gestational diabetes. ¾¾ Risk Factors Your chances of developing gestational diabetes increase if: ªª You are older than 25 years ªª You are overweight or obese ªª You have a strong family history of diabetes ªª You have had gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy ªª You have had a stillbirth or a large baby in a previous pregnancy ªª You have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes ^ ªª You have high blood pressure or high cholesterol ¾¾ Gestational Diabetes can be Controlled When gestational diabetes is detected early, it can be managed and controlled to prevent complications for both you and your baby. It is important that you keep your blood sugar under control. You can do this by: ªª Choosing the right food: Eat a diet that includes lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains and is low in saturated fats and refined carbohydrates, including sweets. This will help to keep your blood sugar levels in the healthy target range, You can consult a dietician to form a suitable meal plan for you. ªª Getting regular exercise: Regular, moderate physical activity (walking, aerobics, and swimming) on most days of the week will help control your blood sugar. Consult your doctor first before starting with an exercise regimen. ªª Monitoring your blood sugar: Check your blood sugar at home. ªª Getting regular medical check-ups: During these visits, your doctor will check your blood

DIABETES & the Risk of Cancer
GESTATIONAL Diabetes Complications Research has shown that people with diabetes are at a much greater risk than the general population of developing many types of cancer. In people with type 2 diabetes, risk of developing cancer of pancreas (a long, flat organ behind the stomach), liver and endometrium (inner lining of the uterus) is doubled. There is also a small increased risk of developing cancer of large bowel, urinary bladder, breast cancer and blood cancer. But, chances of developing prostate cancer are lower in type 2 diabetes. People with type 1 diabetes are at an increased risk of developing cancer of stomach, cervix and endometrium. ¾¾ Cancer and Diabetes: Risk Factors The association between diabetes and cancer is incompletely understood, l Experts from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the American Cancer Society have identified risk factors common to both diabetes and cancer. ¾¾ Non modifiable factors ÂÂ Age (older age) ÂÂ Gender (males at higher risk than females) ÂÂ Race/ethnicity ¾¾ Modifiable factors ÂÂ Overweight and obesity ÂÂ Diet (diets high in red and processed meats and low in vegetables, fruits and whole grains) ÂÂ Physical activity (sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity) ÂÂ Tobacco smoking ÂÂ Alcohol

Diabetes Foot Care
If you have diabetes, you are more likely to develop foot problems without you knowing it. The high blood sugar levels can damage the nerves in your feet. Damage to the nerves is termed diabetic neuropathy. If the nerves in your feet are damaged, then you begin to lose sensation in your feet with loss of ability to feel pain, pressure, heat and cold. Due to the loss of this protective sensation, you may not know right away if you have a sore or injury. The amount of sweat produced by your feet is reduced making your skin very dry; it can become cracked, which makes an infection more likely. Nerve damage can also change the shape of your feet and toes. As a result, you begin to put pressure on parts of the foot that are less protected. Damage to blood vessels because of high blood glucose levels is another important reason as to why some people with diabetes develop foot problems. The stiff and narrow blood vessels reduce the blood flow to the feet and lower legs. So, your feet are less able to fight off infections and any injuries that occur will not heal as quickly as you would expect them to. ¾¾ You are at greater risk of developing foot problems, if: ªª You have had diabetes for a long time ªª Your blood glucose levels have been too high for long period of time ªª You are a smoker ¾¾ Dos and Don’ts of Foot Care  Dos ªª Keep your blood sugar under good control. ªª Check your feet every day for cuts, sores,

GLYCOSYLATED Hemoglobin
Glycosylated hemoglobin, also called HbAlc or simply A1e, is a blood test that provides information about your average blood sugar level for the past 3 months. It is a simple blood test, which can be measured anytime. No special preparation is required. You do not need to fast before the test. Also, factors such as stress, diet, exercise do not affect the result.
¾¾
What is Glycosylated Hemoglobin? Glycosylated hemoglobin is formed when sugar I (glucose) in the blood sticks to hemoglobin, a I protein within red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout your body. The red blood cells live for 3 months. This means that the sugar remains attached to the hemoglobin for 3 months. So, (higher the glucose in the blood, more the glucose attached to hemoglobin. ¾¾ How often is HbAlc Measured? This is usually determined by your doctor. You may be tested for HbAlc when you are first diagnosed with diabetes and then depending on the type of diabetes you have, your treatment plan and how well your blood sugar is being controlled. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends performing Ale test: ªª At least two times a year in patients who are meeting treatment goals (and who have stable blood sugar control). ªª Quarterly in patients whose therapy has changed or who are not meeting blood sugar goals. ¾¾ How are the Results Interpreted? The Ale test result is reported as a percentage. If you have abnormal results, this means that your blood sugar levels had been high over a period of 3 months. If your HbAlc stays high for a long period of time, the risk for complications is even greater. If your HbAlc levels are high, you may need a change in treatment, such as: ªª Changing your medicines ªª Increasing your level of physical activity ªª Modifying your diet.

The higher your A1c level, the poorer your blood sugar control and the higher your risk of diabetes complications.

If the diabetes is wellcontrolled, most patients are allowed to drive. But, if you have been just diagnosed with diabetes and treatment is still being adjusted, you may be unfit to drive at this time. Wait till your diabetes is controlled. Patients who refuse to comply with treatment should avoid driving. ªª Be aware of the risks involved when driving. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is the greatest risk. People taking insulin or anti-diabetic tablets are at risk of low blood sugar levels. High blood sugar (hyperglycemia): Blood sugar levels >300 mg/dL can make one feel unwell, tired and may affect the ability to drive safely. Do not delay meal times. Take regular short breaks from driving. Regularly check your blood sugar. Be aware of your own warning signs. If you feel that your blood sugar is low, stop driving and immediately treat with a quick-acting sugar. Wait until the sugar has started to work before driving on. If you experience hypoglycemia without warning signs (hypoglycemia unawareness), it may be unwise for you to drive. You should discuss this with your doctor. Remember that changing a car tyre or pushing a car could result in low blood sugar levels. Avoid driving after drinking alcohol. If alcohol is consumed it should only be taken with food. Wait for least 12 hours for the alcohol to be broken down before driving. Driving ability could be affected by long-term complications of diabetes, such as eyesight deterioration and the loss of normal sensation in feet. Check with your doctor.

Do not stop taking your diabetes tablets or insulin. ªª If your sugar levels are high, then drink sugar-free liquids; if the blood sugars are low, drink sugar-based liquids. Q and A I am not diabetic, but my friend told me that I may have gestational diabetes. Doctor, how can I find out if I have gestational diabetes? Gestational diabetes usually does not cause symptoms; hence, you need to undergo blood tests to measure blood sugar level. This test is usually done between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. But, it may be done earlier, at your first antenatal visit, if your doctor finds that you are in the high-risk group. If the initial test is negative, your doctor will repeat test for blood sugar level again at 24-28 weeks of pregnancy. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends screening for undiagnosed type 2 diabetes at the first prenatal visit in those with risk factors. Also, all women not known to have diabetes should be screened for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) at 24-28 weeks of pregnancy using the oral glucose tolerance test. ADA also recommends that all women diagnosed with GDM be screened for type 2 diabetes 6-12 weeks postpartum.

Menopause
Gynecologic problems
Menopause symptoms are indications of underlying hormonal imbalance or damage to the body from poor eating habits, stress, obesity and other factors.
Menopause term was originally used to describe the reproductive change in females, where the end of fertility was traditionally indicated by the permanent stopping of menstruation or “menses”. The word “menopause” literally means the “end of monthly cycles”. It usually happens more or less in midlife, signaling the end of the fertile phase of a woman’s life. For medical reasons, the uterus must sometimes be surgically removed in a younger woman; her periods will cease permanently, and the woman will technically be infertile, but as long as at least one of her ovaries is still functioning, the woman will not have reached menopause. . The menopause transition, and postmenopause itself, is a natural life change, not a disease state or a disorder. The transition itself can be challenging for a number of women, but for others it is not difficult. Clinically speaking, menopause is a date. For those women who still have a uterus, menopause is defined as the day after a woman’s final period finishes. The typical age range for the occurrence of menopause is between the ages of 45 and 55. The average age of menopause varies according to geographic location. And at the same time, the woman’s body may not be receiving the support it needs to function as

Poor eating habits, lack of exercise, obesity, excess caffeine and alcohol add to the problem instead of helping the body cope with the demands placed on it. This lack of balance between the demands made versus support given contributes to many of the menopause symptoms. ¾¾ Pre-menopause Pre-menopause is a word used to describe the years leading up to the last period ever, when the levels of reproductive hormones are already becoming lower and more erratic, and the effects of hormone withdrawal may be present. Pre-menopause is a natural stage of life. It is not a disease or a disorder, and therefore it does not automatically require any kind of medical treatment. However, in cases where the physical, mental, and emotional effects of Pre-menopause are severe, and disrupt the everyday life of the woman experiencing them, medical therapy is helpful. ¾¾ Post-menopause Post-menopause is all of the time in a woman’s life that take place after her last period ever, or more accurately, all of the time that follows the point when her ovaries become inactive. A woman who still has her uterus can be declared to be in post-menopause once she has gone 12 full months with no flow at all, not even any spotting. In adult females who still have a uterus, and who are not pregnant or breast feeding, post-menopause is identified by a permanent (at least one year’s) absence of monthly periods or menstruation. At this point a woman is considered infertile, and no longer needs to factor in the possibility of becoming pregnant. ¾¾ The causes of menopause Some factors affect how you age and how you experience menopause: ÂÂ Lifestyle: diet, exercise, weight, smoking, environment. The cultural context within which a woman lives can have a significant impact on the way she experiences the menopause. ÂÂ Genetic makeup: the genes that come from your parents, the blueprint of your constitution and perhaps your future health Hormones: ÂÂ estrogen, progesterone, and others. ÂÂ Social location effects the way www.bangalorehealthtv.com

women perceive menopause and its related biological effects. Ethnicity and geographical location also play a role in the experience of menopause All of these factors have a major influence on how you experience aging. No single factor determines your progress through life or how you’ll feel. ¾¾ Effects or Menopause symptoms? -------------Really?
If menopause happens suddenly (caused by breast cancer treatment), leading to uncomfortable side effects and even dashed hopes of having a baby, it can feel like a disease even worse than breast cancer. Menopause affects women in the following ways:
1.
2. 3.
4.
5. 6.
It may leads to Vascular instability like night sweats and, in a few people, cold flashes and Migraine Skeletal problems like joint pain, muscle pain, back pain. Skin problems like breast atrophy, skin thinning and becoming drier, decreased elasticity of the skin, a sensation like pins and needles, more specifically like ants crawling on or under the skin. Psychological problems like Mood disturbance, irritability, memory loss, and problems with concentration, anxiety, sleep disturbances, poor quality sleep, light sleep, Dizziness insomnia. Sadness, Depression and Fatigue Long-range issues include osteoporosis, heart and vascular disease, and how to live a full and reasonably happy life. Sexual problems like ÂÂ Vaginal Problems, It may lead to itching, dryness, bleeding, watery discharge, urinary frequency, urinary urgency, urinary incontinence, increased inflammation and infection, ÂÂ Vaginal dryness: Sexual intercourse may be uncomfortable or even painful ÂÂ Problem in reaching orgasm, Low metabolism, Lower sex drive, loss of sex drive ÂÂ Lubrication: - Many women find that lubricants help ease vaginal dryness. ÂÂ Discharge: - Troubling vaginal discharge can

also occur with menopause. If you’ve had no improvement with your vaginal discomfort despite the use of these various remedies, talk to your doctor ªª Other problems like Weight gain, loss of energy, and skin and hair changes, Aching joints and muscles ,Allergy symptoms , Breast tenderness, Chronic fatigue and morning sluggishness ,Cold or tingling hands or feet , Craving sweets, caffeine, carbohydrates and unstable blood sugar levels , lightheadedness ,Dry, thin or wrinkly skin , Facial hair growth, Fibrocystic breasts , Hair loss, thinning hair , Headaches, Heart palpitations, Heavy or light periods, Incontinence , Irregular periods, Irritatibility, inability to handle stress, Lack of concentration, foggy fuzzy thinking, memory lapses ,Leg cramps, , PMS and menstrual cramping ,Night sweats, Osteoporosis ,Ringing or buzzing in ears (tinnitus), Sleep disturbances, insomnia, Spotting, light bleeding , Water retention and unexplained weight gain, especially in hips, waist and stomach . You may have only a few menopausal symptoms, or you may have every one. ¾¾ Other therapies  Vaginal moisturizers can help women with overall dryness, and lubricants can help with lubrication difficulties that may be present during intercourse.  Low-dose prescription vaginal estrogen products are generally a safe way to use estrogen in order to help vaginal thinning and dryness problems while only minimally increasing the levels of estrogen in the bloodstream.  In terms of managing hot flashes, lifestyle measures, such as drinking cold liquids, staying in cool rooms, using fans, removing excess clothing layers when a hot flash strikes, and avoiding hot flash triggers such as hot drinks, spicy foods, etc, may partially supplement (or even obviate) the use of medications for some women.  Individual counseling or support groups can sometimes be helpful to handle sad, depressed, anxious or confused feelings Careful exercise is an ideal example of therapeutic measures with minimal drawbacks: It strengthens your bones and heart, controls weight, lessens hot flashes, improves your sleep, boosts your energy, revs up your sex drive, and makes your skin glow—without side effects.
When your hormones are balanced, you feel more alert and energetic. And balancing family, career, stress and your own needs becomes much easier to do, like it was when you were younger.

In some boys during puberty and adolescence, breasts develop to notable sizes. About 70 % boys develop gynaecomastia during puberty, but out of this about 30 % carry it into adulthood. This can be a cause of psychological problems and causes the boys to be embarrassed to remove their clothing in front of others or while playing contact sports or when they move to a hostel environment. Sometimes, even in adults this may be present because of hormonal imbalances. Gynaecomastia or Man Boobs as it is commenly called, may be of the glandular or fatty type. The glandular type is usually present beneath the nipple and areola, the fatty type being more diffusely spread. Usually both types are present in varying combinations. Treatment is most often sought because of psychological trauma and cosmetic reasons. Rarely there may be pain in the glandular element causing them to seek treatment. ¾¾ Procedure: In Male Breast Reduction. the glandular type is removed by an incision or cut around the areola. The fatty element can be removed by liposuction through the same incision. The procedure varies from 1- 2 hours depending on the amount to be removed. Usually a liposuction is done to start with and all the fat is sucked out to give a proper contour. Then a decision is taken regarding the gland removal. Most of the times, liposuction alone is sufficient. After surgery a pressure dressing is needed, to help the skin shrink back. Varying degrees of swelling could persist for 3 – 4 months. ¾¾ Post Op: Wearing the Pressure garment is mandatory to

achieve the best results. ¾¾ Risks: It is a relatively safe procedure with no major side effects. Sometimes over enthusiastic excision are done by improperly trained surgeons leading to a dish deformity or saucer deformity, where the skin is thinned so much that it sticks to the muscle producing a very flat and deformed chest wall. The aim of correction in this procedure is to achieve a skin fold thickness in conformity with the rest of the body and not to flatten it out too much.

Negate the negatives
AVOID MOODSWING A person whose moodswings often find it difficult to work, socialize with people and even to concentrate on anything for long. We need emotions, but emotions should not control us. A bad mood can, at times, be dangerous and life - threatening also. Harvard University researchers found that a single angry episode doubles the risk of having a heart attack within the next two hours. A mood swing always affects a person’s perception of the happening and circumstances involving him. It not only affects a depressed person’s emotional life, but also his family members and friends. When the mood swings badly, life seems to be very dull, boring and meaningless. Even normal conversation in the family may turn out to be boring. These perceptional changes often increases as the mood swing intensifies. According to Dr. Patrick Mckeon - Abnormal moods pose a tremendous problem for an individual’s judgment and discretion. His thoughts are subtly influenced to a greater or lesser extent by the moodchange. A well-adjusted person with a relatively mild moodswing will often realize that his thinking has changed and hold it in check. Sometimes either lack of insight or the thinking dominates and dictates uncharacteristic behaviour. Moodswings come and go away, its everybody’s natural tendency. According to University of Michigan most of the people spend three days out of ten just trying to correct mild moodswing. Our mind and body are linked to each other and work as one ‘integrated

You will sink into a downward spiral and feel lousy which hampers your performance in the work field, family relationships and so many other related aspects. The challenge before you is to master your moods, and it’s a do-or-die situation. The following suggestions will definitely help you to lift your mood: ÂÂ Maintain a stable blood sugar level, fluctuations should not be more. To have this eat frequent small meals and snacks every 3 to 4 hours or so. Drink 3 to 4 litres of water spread throughout the day. radicals. Having a sound sleep counteracts violent changes of mood. Less sleep or very disturbed sleep may be frustrating. When you are totally in off-mood, the first thing you should ask yourself, is “Why? Why am I not in good mood?” Sometimes you can’t find any answers. Simply you are in bad mood. Try to come out of the situation. Be cheerful and enjoy life in whatever manner you like. According to Dr. Robert Thayer, Professor

of Psychology “Most of us see our moods are caused by the things that happen to us, but they turn out to be very much related to natural biological processes”. ÂÂ A lot depends on the kind of food we eat, health conditions and other psychological factors. Even the time of the day makes a difference. Our energy and tolerance level is high during early hours of the day as compared to night, when energy level is at the lowest. ÂÂ Positive attitude and thinking sometimes nullify the situational hazards and correct the mood. ÂÂ Always try to spend maximum time with nature to keep yourself cool and adjustable under all situations. ÂÂ If you eat balanced nutritional food, have a heavy breakfast, reduce your intake of caffeine and sugar, quit smoking, maintain a free and relaxed mental state, there is no possibility that you cannot maintain a good mood all the time. ÂÂ Don’t skip any meals, specially breakfast, which gives you the maximum energy from the beginning of the day. Eat a lot of bright coloured fruits and vegetables. Don’t follow an extremely low-fat diet (quick and instant fat loss is a mood - swinging situation). Fat is essential, it acts as an anti-depressant.

became worse when she was tired, stressed, anxious and hungry. It is then she decided to reduce her stress by taking time off from work. But she believed that distraction can help and so always got herself engaged in some activity or the other. She started eating small meals and eliminated foods which made her symptoms worse like rich, fried, fatty or highly spiced foods. When my mom travelled -- Movements such as car motion worsened her nausea symptoms. She tried listening to music during travel which contained frequent pulsations; probably this reconditioned the balancing mechanism in her inner ear and dissipated her symptoms. Sudden transitions from say the horizontal lying down posture to the vertical standing posture triggered the nausea symptom. So she always took time in changing postures. She was consuming water well .Foods high in water content she found helped her prevent dehydration and constipation because she found that both aggravated nausea and vomiting. The lehya which her Ayurvedic physician gave her came handy during these situations .a lehya – electuary prepared with juice of lemon, parched paddy, kernel of jujube fruit, seeds of pomegranate and mixed with appetising articles. ¾¾ For Early morning vomiting due to pitta – bile several drinks prescribed by the physician worked wonders for her like: ªª Rice water mixed with sugar, honey, flour of parched paddy, made palatable by adding chaturjata. ªª A drink prepared with parched paddy mixed with honey and sugar is beneficial. ªª For non-vegetarians taking meat soup sweetened with sugar is congenial. ªª Drinking milk sweetened /without sweetening also soothes the stomach. Vomiting due to kapha can be corrected by using cooled decoction of tender leaves of mango and jamoon –black berry, mixed with honey. Soup of green gram medicated with seeds of pomegranate and mixed with salt and heated with butter is appetizer and relieves vomiting For excess salivation bhunimba with honey is recommended. During this period my dad was feeling completely helpless .However he was trying his best to help my mom cope up with her nauseas and vomiting by helping cooking meals or ordering desired food by my mom through darshinis ---food outlets. He extended his helping hand with cleaning the kitchen mess and doing the grocery shopping. The outside world is not aware about the development and changes taking place inside the mother because of which she is tired and nauseous making her feel low rather than joyous . .and this imbalance between the inside world and what the outside world perceives can be hard to manage. ¾¾ Cravings My mom craved for sweets. She was obsessed with bar of chocolates and would complete the whole pack in one sitting. As I was growing the uterus which houses me also started becoming bigger and due to this there is pressure created on the rectum the final stretch of the intestine which stores the stools until they are ready to go. Due to this occasionally she had constipation. Moreover the hormones in pregnancy slow the transit of food through the digestive tract. She paid special attention to her bowel management .She made sure she used the toilet when she got the first call of nature and had plenty of time and privacy. She gradually introduced high fibre food into her diet to prevent wind and bloating. Her diet included high fibre food such as whole grain wheat chapatti, fresh fruits and vegetables .Drinking lot of fluid almost 1 to 1.5 litres in form of water, tender coconut water, juicy fruits etc. Exercises like walking, Yoga and gentle exercises kept her fit and healthier. If you are probably constipated and have a major problem mention it to your physician so you can get it treated earlier because constipation can sometimes lead to piles /haemorrhoids which can be itchy ,painful , and uncomfortable . ¾¾ Is it safe to use insect repellent during pregnancy It is important to be cautious to use insect repellent spray because we don’t know much about the possible harmful effects on your baby. A certain amount of this chemical gets absorbed through the skin and into your blood stream and in large doses can make you seriously ill. The question of insect repellent may become an issue if you are travelling to a country where you can contract an insect borne disease like malaria during pregnancy which can be harmful for your growing baby. Consider using mosquito nets and Ayurvedic herbal mosquito repellents if you are pregnant and travelling to a malaria prone area . ¾¾ Does foetus absorb calcium from mothers teeth and make them weak I do not absorb calcium from my mother’s teeth. I get all my calcium requirement s from my mother’s normal diet. Mothers teeth may be weakened because most expectant mothers fall into a habit of frequent snaking in between meals and this habit may cause tooth decay. From 5th to 6th week of pregnancy teeth begin to develop in the foetus. If expectant mother takes some medications like tetracycline during this period the teeth of the foetus can get discoloured .In case a expectant mother suffers from painful wisdom teeth she should consult a dentist. The first three months of pregnancy is an important development stage for the foetus. To avoid possible risks caused by the dental treatment doctors usually suggest to put off dental treatment until 5th month of pregnancy. Non urebt dental treatment can be done after the baby is born . It isnot advisable for expectant mothers to receive dental treatment after 7th month of pregnancy because the supine lying position of dental chair will not only cause discomfort to expectant mothers it is even possible that major veins from the lower limbs can be pressed by the weight s and the uterus and foetus which will block the blood from returning to the heart .

Youth
Adolescence A period of Stress and Strain
Dr. N. Gopalakrishna Formerly Editor,
NIMHANS, Bangalore
Adolescence is a crucial period which each and every child has to pass through in one’s life. Affection, Acceptance, Approval, Achievement, Self-Actualisation is the need of the hour. Adolescence is a crucial period which each and every child has to pass through in one’s life. From the childhood, the child passes on to puberty. ‘Adolescence’ in Latin means ‘to grow’. That is, adolescence is a period of growth of children. This period is also called teen age. The growth or development of children takes place in different ways. They may be classified as (1) Physical (2) Mental /Intellectual (3) Social (4) Emotional (5) Sexual (6) Religious and Moral.
Before we go on to discuss these aspects in details, let us find out the age of adolescence. ¾¾ In India Girls between the ages of 13 and 21 years; Boys between the ages 15 and 21 years are classified to be adolescents. ¾¾ Western world Girls between the ages of 13 and 19 years; Boys between the ages 11 and 21 years are classified to be adolescents. However, these figures are not universally accepted as age of adolescents. These figures vary from country to country. This variation is due to physical and mental maturity that takes place among the adolescents because of the socio-cultural development of that country and the exposure of children to that developed environment. ¾¾ Characteristics of Adolescents It is said that adolescence is a period of recapitulation of infancy. “It is a period of great stress and strain, storm and strife”. The six different ways through which the development of adolescents takes place are discussed below: ÂÂ Physical development: During the period of adolescence, the physical shape of the body changes drastically. This happens to both boys and girls. For boys, mustache starts growing under the nose. Hairs start growing under the armpits, and around the private parts. They start growing tall, their voice breaks and can be easily noticed. Physically also, they grow strong where their muscles are markedly stronger. Similarly, girls also grow, their physical body

changes are very much seen. Their breasts develop, some become slightly fatty, they start menstruating and eventually wear an attractive look. Naturally, at this stage, both boys and girls attract each other. Intellectual development: At this stage, adolescents or teenagers develop logical thinking. They develop the habit of reasoning and concentration, i.e., they start asking ‘how’ and ‘why’ about everything. Their imaginative ideas start working. Often they will be critical of everything. It is also said that at this stage, the potential artist, the poet, the philosopher, the inventor inside the teenager start blooming and in the future, they develop in their areas of interest and in their youth they become more productive in their areas of specialization. Emotional development: Under emotional development, adolescents develop their biological, cognitive and social aspects. Their educational developments reach maximum. In addition, some develop anxiety, fear, love and anger; they become too serious and moody. Some face intensive excitement and deep depression. That is why this is a period of stresses and strains. Some others develop a dilemma in respect of selecting their careers. Social development: Adolescents would like to spend more time with their friends. They believe in making more intimate friends and attach themselves with their friends. They listen to the advice of their close friends than their parents. Some also develop hatredness towards their parental advice. This is the period where several adolescents experiment like smoking, alcohol and even drugs. This depends on the company of their friends. If they have good friends, they develop good habits and become good citizen. Members of the same sex become close, but later include both boys and girls. Adolescents crave for independence. They don’t want to be considered a child. They don’t want

their parents to enquire about their boy/girl friends. They enjoy travelling. Much demand for latest brand of motorbikes and many parents also accede to the demands of their children. ÂÂ Sexual development: This is the age when the sexual development of adolescents reaches its peak. Boys and girls fall in love with themselves (autoeroticism). They enjoy self decoration, spending more time in front of the mirror is very common. Self enjoyment also takes place by indulging in masturbation. There is also danger of homo-sexuality, i.e., attraction towards their own sex. Boys and girls getting attracted each other, often establishing sexual relationships are also noticed (Hetero-sexuality). ÂÂ Spiritual and Moral development: Some adolescents talk about God, religion and religious values. Some may become deeply religious whereas some experience crisis in faith. They may question about the existence of God, attract towards some other schools of thought where they become confused. They may begin to question religious beliefs and concepts. Very often, parents find it difficult to convince their children in thee respects. ÂÂ Special features: Among adolescent girls, during the early menstrual periods, they frequently experience headaches, backaches, cramps, abdominal pain, fainting, vomiting, skin irritations and swelling of legs and ankles. Some become depressed and irritable. They gain weight and there will be rapid physical growth. Guidance and Counselling Many need guidance and counseling for proper adjustments. Research says that adults’, parents, the teachers and their unreasonable ways and views are real problems. There is a gap between them and the adolescents. The demands of adolescents’ peer group are more important than their own expectations. Adolescents need respect and recognition and they also maintain their self-prestige and status among their peers. Their needs– AFFECTION, ACCEPTANCE, APPROVAL, ACHIEVEMENT, SELFACTUALISATION must be met. The members of the family and teachers need to be gentle yet firm and understand their physical, mental and emotional changes.

Sex & Ayurveda All of us understand that next to the need for food, water & sleep, the urge for sex is the most needed biological drive. Human sex is not merely a physical mating but is the union of two bodies, minds and souls.
Sex & Ayurveda -Sex has always been an issue of dichotomy. An integral part of our lives and essential for the continuation of the species, it is far more than just a technical necessity. While social structures in India are quite strict on this, the study of sex – from both its physical and psychological perspectives – has been practiced here from ancient times. Unlike in the west, where this is a fairly recent phenomenon and they are yet to find the proper line of distinction between sex in general and pornography in particular. On the other hand Maharishi Vatsayan’s Kamasutra is yet unparalleled

as the most comprehensive documentation ever on the practice of sex. Unfortunately, its classic treatment of the act and the art has often been misrepresented. The ancient Ayurvedic text of Charaka Samhita provided complete sexual solutions over 3000 years ago And the time-frozen, stone-carved, erotic sculptures in the temples at Khajuraho and Konarak leave millions of visitors utterly awe-struck by their sheer beauty, elegance and variety. An undying testimony to how intrinsic sex was to the daily lives of people in ancient India. The importance of sex in our lives has remained quite unchanged. ¾¾ Crucial points to be kept in mind ªª Sex is an integral part of our daily habits (Dinacharya) ªª Night and after two hours of dinner is the ideal time for intimacy, as it is kapha time. ªª An absolutely satisfying sexual union, when developed over time, bestows you and your partner with health and vitality.

ªª For best results, each of the partners should be physically, emotionally and spiritually involved with the other. ªª Touch, smell, food, music and ambience play a vital role in developing, increasing and prolonging intimacy. ªª Perverted or unsatisfying sex has adverse effects on your mental and physical health, as it aggravates your vital energies (doshas) and reduces immunity. An aggravated vata will make you more emotionally vulnerable and fear-prone, increased pitta will move you to anger and even frustration and enhanced kapha will make you more possessive. ªª The frequency of sex depends on your constitution and seasons – kapha types indulge in sex more frequently than your vata & pitta types thanks to the extra stamina they possess. ªª Vata types might find satisfaction in changing partners. While the difficult-to-quench-theirdesires pitta types are usually in quest for more intensity. For more and better sex therefore, one can practice Vajikaran therapy (virlification) – that part of Ayurveda which enhances male fertility and potency. However, any misuse of the same may open up a deluge of emotional and psychological complications. Use of similar medication (aphrodisiac supplements) instantly induces sexual pleasure and excitement, increases sexual stamina and promotes fertile seminal secretions.

Live life the eco-friendly way and benefit yourself by helping the nature: Use energy-saving lights and dimmers and reduce electricity bills. Carry your own shopping bags and always use jute or fabric bags. Buy the daily groceries in bulk (but not to waste) to cut down on the packaging and is economical too. Use herbal toiletteries and medications rather than the synthetic chemicals sold. Maintain a garden in the terrace or in the balcony. Use some indoor plants to clean up the air. The myth of the holy basil is worthwhile as it purifies the air. Plant a tree to commemorate a landmark event or a celebration in your life and keep track of its age with pride as a memoir. Use rechargeable batteries as the alkaline ones emit harmful chemicals. Keeps the machines and electrical appliances in good working order and wellserviced for efficient usage. Avoid using chlorine in the swimming pools. Instead use a UV system to kill bacteria and filter yhe water. Use solar batteries in street and garden lights. Transform your room to look higher by experimenting with vertical hued stripes and

wider by experimenting with horizontal hued stripes. It also brightens up the atmosphere. Float some flowers and scented candles in a medium sized bowl or /OML HI’S vessel for giving that aesthetic touch and freshen up your room. Sparkle tiles overnight by rubbing them with bleaching powder and water and then rinsing in the morning. Always start dusting from top to bottom so those things that have been already dusted need not be done again. While washing or cleaning walls take the bottom route upwards as it is easy to clean the drips from washed walls. A dry cotton towel sprayed with the cleaning formulation does better than paper towels or newspapers in cleaning glass surfaces. While washing windows , wiping horizontally on the inside and vertically on the outside helps us know which direction the marks are. While cleaning go from edges to the centre to avoid the dust from spreading again. A weak ammonia solution with a Vz teaspoon of borax can be used for removing tough stains. Sprinkling a little boric acid on bathroom tiles before washing gives sparkling results. Hard water stains from bathroom fixtures can be removed by applying a paste of vinegar and baking soda. Drape them with a soft towel and leave on for an hour. Then rinse off and dry properly.

Diet
Fruits & Vegetables Do they have a role in disease cure and prevention? Epidemiological studies have shown that when consumed in adequate amounts on a regular basis, the various micronutrients and phytochemicals contained in fruit and vegetables can probably lower the risk of obesity and ward off many oxidative stressrelated chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, certain cancers, type 2 diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, age-related cognitive decline or dementia, age-related eye diseases as well as rheumatoid arthritis.

ÂÂ
Obesity: Fruit and non-starchy vegetables can play an important role in weight management. With a high content of water and fibre and a relatively low amount of fat and calories, fruit and non-starchy vegetables can increase satiety and reduce the feeling of hunger. As they are less energy dense (for non-starchy vegetables in particular), a relatively larger amount can be consumed without gaining much weight. Furthermore, the flavonoids found in fruit and vegetables may fend off obesity through stimulating release of certain hormones that regulate lipid metabolism (such as adiponectin and adipokine), reverse insulin resistance or modulate appetite and energy expenditure.

A review of various prospective and intervention studies asserted that in adults, consuming more fruit and vegetables could possibly contribute to a stable weight, and probably lead to weight loss if the fruit and vegetables consumed were to replace foods rich in fat or high in energy density. Cardiovascular Diseases (Hypertension, Coronary Heart Disease And Stroke): Epidemiological studies consistently showed that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables could lower the risk of hypertension, coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke. Another meta-analysis showed that for each additional daily serving of fruit, fruit and vegetables, and vegetables, the risk of stroke decreased by 11%, 5%, and 3% respectively. Cancer: Considerable laboratory evidence from chemical, cell culture, animal studies as well as clinical trials indicated that antioxidants might slow or possibly prevent the development of cancer.14 The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) estimated that diets high in fruit and vegetables (more than 400 g per day) could prevent at least 20% of all cancer incidences. A higher consumption of fruit and nonstarchy vegetables probably protects against cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, and stomach. Type 2 Diabetes: Most of the epidemiological

studies showed no significant risk relation between diabetes and consumption of fruit and vegetables as a whole, as well as consumption of either fruit or vegetables alone. Chronic Respiratory Diseases (Asthma And Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease): Considerable epidemiological and clinical evidence supported an association between higher consumption of fruit and vegetables and a lower risk of asthma or asthma-related symptoms as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A diet rich in fruit and vegetables may also have beneficial effects in the prevention of COPD. Eye Diseases (Macular Degeneration And Cataract): Some studies observed that generous consumption of fruit and green leafy or cruciferous vegetables rich in carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin might reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or age-related nuclear cataract. Rheumatoid Arthritis: Systematic reviews of literature on the role of fruit and vegetables in susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis found that high intake of fruit and vegetables possibly cut rheumatoid arthritis risk or relieve inflammatory rheumatoid symptoms.

WATER MELON

ÂÂ ÂÂ
ÂÂ ÂÂ
ÂÂ
Water melon as the name itself suggests, has plenty of water and therefore it can be consumed liberally during the hot season. It increases the flow of urine. Water melon cools the body, revives it when exhausted due to heat and quenches thirst. Patients suffering from dysentery, diarrhoea, vomiting and cholera are likely to suffer from dehydration. They can be given a cup of water melon juice mixed with lemon juice. Water melon is also good for constipation. It helps easy evacuation. Burning during urination can be stopped by drinking a mixture of equal quantities of water melon juice and buttermilk to which a dash of salt is added. The same drink can be given to patients suffering from jaundice also. The thick white portion of water melon which resembles cucumber should also be eaten for good results. Grind one teaspoon of poppy seeds (Khaskhas), three or four almonds and one table spoon of water melon seeds to the consistency of milk. Mix it with a little sugar candy and drink it to cool the body. It is good for the heart and you can sleep well. It is equally effective even if you just chew and eat the above ingredients before going to bed.
