Almost 50% of people with type 2 diabetes are not aware that they have the conditions, People with type 2 diabetes may have the same symptoms but the/ may be less apparent. Many have no symptoms and are only diagnosed after several years with the conditions.
Diabetes is a chronic condition that arises when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin produced. Failure of insulin production, insulin action or both leads to raised glucose levels in the blood (hyperglycoemia), ¾¾ There are two main types of diabetes: ªª Type 1: People with type I diabetes produce very little or no insulin and require injections of insulin to survive. It is the most common type in children and young adults. ªª Type 2: People with type 2 diabetes cannot use insulin effectively. They can manage their condition with lifestyle measures alone, but oral drugs are often require, and less frequently insulin. Type 2 diabetes accounts for over 90% of diabetes cases worldwide. Though the two major types of diabetes recognized are type 1 and type 2. A third type of diabetes develops during some cases of pregnancy but usually disappears afterwards, ¾¾ Symptoms of diabetes Commons symptoms of type 1 diabetes include : ªª Excessive thirst ªª Sudden weightless ªª Constant hunger ªª Extreme tiredness ªª Frequent urination ªª Blurred vision ¾¾ Diabetes Complications Diabetes is a chronic, life-long condition that

requires careful control. Short and long term complications of diabetes include: ªª Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) ªª Kidney disease (diabetes nephropathy) ªª Nerve disease \diabe1ic neuropathy) ªª Eye disease (retinopathy) ¾¾ Risk factors for diabetes Both genetic and environmental appear to be important in the development of type 1 diabetes. Potential environmental triggers include viruses, toxins in the food chain and dietary components though to date the involvement of these factors has not been proven in the majority of case. ¾¾ Type 2 ªª Overweight and obesity ªª Physical inactivity ªª High-fat and low-fibre diet ªª Ethnicity ªª Family history / age ªª Low birth weight The more risk factors an Individual has, fhe greater their likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes. ¾¾ Walking helps to fight diabetes Weight management and physical activity are the true foundation of the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Just 30 minutes of moderate physical activity such as walking a day is enough to ensure good health. Walking reduces your risk of diabetes by helping your body to use the natural anti-diabetes hormone, insulin, more efficiently and effectively.

KNOW YOUR KIDNEYS The Kidneys are one of the most important organs of the excretory system in human beings. The kidneys remove the final products of all metabolic activities like digestion, excess water in the body, toxic substances, various other substances in body fluids. The Kidneys are one of the most important organs of the excretory system in human beings. The other organs are the liver, the lungs and the digestive system. Like these organs, the kidneys also remove from the body, the final products of all metabolic activities like digestion, excess water in the body, toxic substances, various other substances in body fluids, like electrolytes, etc. While most people think of the kidney as having only the work of producing urine and removing waste products, what is not known is that the kidney also has very important endocrine functions also. ªª It produces and releases Erythropoietin, a hormone which effects blood formation ªª It produces and releases Renin, which is an Important hormone in controlling blood pressures in the human body produces 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol, ªª It which is involved in the control of calcium metabolism, and is a derivative of Vitamin D ªª These not only ensure deposition of calcium in the bones, but also modify the action of the parathyroid gland and its hormone. Thus the kidneys behave like the conductor in an orchestra. ¾¾ How are the kidneys to look at? Each kidney is a bean shaped organ. Most people normally have two kidneys. These kidneys are located on either side of the vertebral column, high up in the back, partly protected by the lower ribs. Reddish brown in color, each kidney weighs around 150 gm; it is a little less in females. Its length is around 4-5 inches, and the width is around 3 inches. Because, the kidneys play such an important function in the human body, though it weighs only 150 gm, it draws about 25% of all the blood that is pumped out of the heart. This in itself is a measure of its importance in the body. Compare this with the brain, which weighs around 1.5 kg or 10 times as much as the kidney. This still draws only about 10% of the blood output from the heart. The heart itself draws even less blood than the kidney. ¾¾ Are both the kidneys of the same size? No, the organs in women are always slightly smaller than in the males. The right kidney tends to be a little shorter than the left kidney, partly because of

AYURPHARMA
its position under the liver. ¾¾ Do all human beings have two kidneys? No, about 1 in 1000 individuals is born with a single kidney. They are capable of living a normal life. It is only because of this that transplant teams remove one kidney from a living person to transplant knowing fully well that the donor can continue to lead a normal life. For the same reason if a person loses one kidney due to disease or injury, etc. his normal life span is still not affected, as long as the other kidney is functioning well. ¾¾ Is it possible for a person to have more than two kidneys? Yes, but it is very rare. So far, only about 150 - 200 people have been documented to have more than 2 kidneys. ¾¾ Is it possible for the kidneys to be in some other place than high up in the back? Yes, it is not uncommon for a person to have one or both of the kidneys in some other place within the abdominal cavity. It may be either behind the uterus, behind the bladder, midway between the bladder and the liver; both kidneys may come on to one side itself. The shape of the kidneys may also be The orientation of the kidney also be rotated. None of this is of any significance, unless there is obstruction or any abnormality associated. ¾¾ What is the earliest age in which we can find out about any abnormality in the kidney? Any anatomical abnormality in the kidney can be located as early as the fourth to fifth month of the pregnancy itself ! The numbers of kidneys present in the fetus, it’s functioning, any obstruction in it, all these can be found out. ¾¾ What are the symptoms of any renal disease? These could be varied or none at all. Decrease in the amount of urine formation, increase in the amount of urine formation, bed-wetting, blood in the urine, foul smelling or foaming urine, burning sensation when passing urine. Passage of stones in the urine, pain in the back or in the flanks, puffiness of the face, swelling of the feet, swelling of entire body, high blood pressure, loss of appetite etc. While some of the symptoms may occur in people with other organ disease also, anything out of the ordinary especially in the younger patient must be investigated. www.bangalorehealthtv.com

Pneumonia is a general term that refers to an infection of the lungs, which can be caused by a variety of microorganisms, like viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Pneumonia is a common illness, occurs in all age groups, and is a leading cause of death among the elderly and people who are suffering from long time illness.
Dr. C. SHARATH KUMAR DIRECTOR & CHIEF FERTILITY SURGEON, MEDIWAVE IVF & FERTILITY hospital City X-Ray complex, Sayyaji Rao Road, Mysore - 570021. Ph : (O) : 2444441, (R) : 2519026. E-mail : drcsharath@hotmail.com.
Pneumonia is a very old disease well known to our ancestors. Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician known as the father of Medicine had described the signs and symptoms of pneumonia accurately as early as 4th century B.C. ¾¾ Types of Pneumonia Pneumonias can be classified in several different ways. They are Acute pneumonia: It is a type of pneumonia usually develops rapidly and lasts for 2 to 3 weeks. It is spread easily
Picture showing the Lung infected with and can cause symptoms very soon. Chronic pneumonia: These pneumonias develop gradually over a period of weeks to months. This type pneumonia does not spread easily. Community acquired pneumonia is a common seen in people with an underlying pathology. Streptococcus is the most common bacterial cause of community-acquired pneumonia. This pneumonia occurs most commonly in very young and very old people. Hospital-acquired pneumonia is an infection that patients get while they’re in the hospital. This means the infection is not present at the time a patient is admitted to the hospital. Aspiration pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs and bronchial tubes caused by inhaling foreign material, usually food, drink, vomit, or secretions from the mouth into the lungs. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS):

PNEUMONIA SARS is a highly contagious and deadly type of pneumonia which first occurred in 2002 after initial outbreaks in China. SARS is caused by a virus called as coronavirus. Chemical pneumonia: Chemical pneumonia is caused by chemical toxins such as pesticides, which may enter the body by inhalation or by skin contact. ¾¾ Causative organisms Pneumonia is caused by different types of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. ¾¾ Viruses Some viruses that cause pneumonia are adenoviruses, rhinovirus, influenza virus (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and parainfluenza virus. ¾¾ Bacteria The bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae, a common cause of pneumonia. Bacteria typically enter the lung when airborne droplets are inhaled, but they can also reach the lung through the bloodstream when there is an infection in another part of the body. Many bacteria live in parts of the upper respiratory tract, such as the nose, mouth and sinuses, and can easily be inhaled into the alveoli. ¾¾ The microscopic picture of the Lungs A. Upper half showing normal alveoli with air. B. Lower half is showing infected alveoli filled with fluid leading to pneumonia. ¾¾ Fungi Fungal pneumonia is uncommon, but it may occur in individuals with reduced immune system due to AIDS or other medical problems. ¾¾ Parasites A variety of parasites can affect the lungs. These parasites typically enter the body through the skin or by being swallowed. Once inside the body, they travel to the lungs, usually through the blood and cause disease. ¾¾ Spread of the disease Pneumonia is a common illness in all parts of the world. It is a major cause of death among all age groups. In children, the majority of deaths occur in the
AYURPHARMA FEBRUARY-2014
newborn period, with over two million deaths a year worldwide. ¾¾ Signs and Symptoms Symptoms of pneumonia vary, depending on the age of the child and the cause of the pneumonia. Some common symptoms include: Fever, chill, cough, unusually rapid breathing, breathing with wheezing sounds, vomiting, chest pain, abdominal pain, decreased activity, loss of appetite and in extreme cases, bluish or gray color of the lips and fingernails. ¾¾ Diagnosis Clinical examination: Individuals with symptoms of pneumonia need medical evaluation. By listening into the breath sounds through a stethoscope, the doctor can detect decreased air entry into the affected part of the lung. And also the doctor can detect fever low body temperature, an increased respiratory rate, low blood pressure, a fast heart rate. ¾¾ Other tests Chest X-ray: An important test for detecting pneumonia. Chest x-rays can reveal areas of opacity (seen as white) which represent consolidation. Chest x-rays are also used to evaluate for complications of pneumonia. X-ray picture showing

2. Sputum test: Sputum of the infected person is taken and stained with dyes and examined under microscope. The organisms causing the disease can often be seen and identified. ¾¾ Treatment Most cases of pneumonia can be treated without hospitalization. Oral antibiotics, rest, fluids, and home care are sufficient for complete healing. Some of the antibiotics which are given to treat bacterial pneumonia are penicillin, erythromycin, azithromycin, clarithromycin, and the fluoroquinolones. Viral pneumonia caused by influenza A may be treated with rimantadine or amantadine. ¾¾ Complications Sometimes pneumonia can lead to additional medical problems called complications. Complications are more frequently associated with bacterial pneumonia than with viral pneumonia. The most important complications are: ¾¾ Respiratory and circulatory failure People with pneumonia have difficulty breathing, and it may not be possible for them to breathe well enough to stay alive without support. Pneumonia can also cause respiratory failure by triggering acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which results from a combination of infection and inflammatory response. ¾¾ Pleural effusion Pleural effusion can seen in the X-ray of the infected person. It is the condition which shows the collection of fluid around the lung. Sepsis and septic shock are potential complications of pneumonia. Sepsis occurs when microorganisms enter the bloodstream and the immune system responds by secreting cytokines. Lung abscess: If pneumonia is not properly treated, it can result in pus inside the lungs called as Abscess. ¾¾ Prevention There are several ways to prevent infectious pneumonia. Vaccination is important for preventing pneumonia in both children and adults. Vaccinations against Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae in the first year of life have greatly reduced their role in pneumonia in children. Other methods to prevent Pneumonia are, ªª Avoid the use of kerchiefs, towels, cloths of an infected person. ªª Avoid the use of plates, cups, spoons which are used by infected person. ªª Use kerchiefs while coughing and sneezing. ªª Wash the hands properly with soaps. ªª Cleanliness and hygiene is most important. ªª Use masks whenever there is a high risk of acquiring the disease. ¾¾ Conclusion: Though pneumonia is an ordinary infection, if it is not treated at an initial stage, it may spread to others. Also it may cause lot of complications to the infected person which may be sometimes fatal. Hence it is always better to identify the cause of infection and get it treated.

control the way your body uses energy. Hence deficiency of the same can have widespread consequences on the whole body making you feel weak and tired besides a host of other symptoms. The good news is that once detected, Hypothyroidism can be effectively treated and the disease can be kept under control. Conventional medication entails taking supplements of the hormones whereas homeopathy stimulates better functioning of the thyroid gland so that it can produce the hormones on its own. Successful treatment can reduce the dependency on external supplementation of the hormones and ensure good health in general. ¾¾ What is Hypothyroidism? Before we get to understanding Hypothyroidism, let us first understand the normal functioning of thyroid gland: The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland situated in the front of the neck and it weighs about 20-25 gms in an adult person. This gland takes up the iodine from the foods we eat and converts it into hormones namely Thyroxine (T4), Tri-iodothyronine (T3) Calcitonin. These hormones affect growth and development and also control the way body utilizes energy. The levels of thyroid hormones are in turn controlled by TSH (Thyroid stimulating hormone/ Thyrotropin) that is secreted by the pituitary gland situated in the brain. ¾¾ About hypothyroidism: Hypothyroidism is a condition in which less than

normal levels of thyroid hormones are circulating in the blood. This can be due to a problem with the thyroid gland itself (Primary hypothyroidism) wherein it cannot produce sufficient hormones due to certain reasons or due to a problem with the pituitary gland (Secondary hypothyroidism) wherein the basic stimulus for the hormone secretion is lacking. In either case, the end result is that there are widespread consequences on the whole body due to lack of T3 and T4 hormones. ¾¾ Normal hormone levels: T3 (Tri-iodothyronine): 80-220 nanograms/dl T4 (Thyroxine): 4.5 to 12.5 micrograms/dl TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone): 0.5-6 micro International units/ml Almost 3-5 % of the world population suffers from hypothyroidism, the incidence being much higher in women (almost 10%). The incidence increases with age. This is one of those conditions which sometimes exist for many years before being diagnosed and treated properly. Anyone can get hypothyroidism though it tends to affect older adults especially women above the age of 50 years. The condition can even affect infants and can present in a severe form known as Cretinism. Due to its inherent nature, the condition tends to be very subtle in the initial stages and can often be missed for ageing or symptoms of menopause. However, the good news is that sufficient and precise tests are now available for diagnosing it thus paving a way for timely treatment. ¾¾ Causes of Hypothyroidism Hypothyroidism can develop due to a number of reasons and these may vary from patient to patient. Some of the common causes have been listed here: ÂÂ Severe iodine deficiency: A diet that is persistently low in iodine (such as that seen in certain geographical areas of the world like India, Chile, remote mountainous regions of Himalayas, Andes, etc.) can lead to Hypothyroidism. ÂÂ Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: This is an inherited auto-immune condition which causes the body’s immune system to inappropriately attack the thyroid gland. It is 5-10 times more common in women as compared to men. The patient usually presents with am enlarged thyroid gland (goiter) which has diminished ability to produce the hormones T3 and T4. ÂÂ Pregnancy: In some women, there is production of antibodies to the thyroid gland during or after pregnancy leading to hypothyroidism. This can lead to complications during the pregnancy or childbirth and can also have effects on the growing fetus. ÂÂ Lymphocytic thyroiditis: Inflammation of the thyroid gland caused by a particular type of blood cell - Lymphocyte - is called Lymphocytic Thyroiditis. This condition is particularly common after pregnancy and the patient usually experiences a phase during which there is excessive production of thyroid hormones from the thyroid gland

followed by reduced production of the same. The condition usually resolves within 6 months in most cases though in some cases the patient may continue to remain hypothyroid. ÂÂ Radioactive iodine treatment or surgery: Treatment with radioactive iodine or surgical removal of the thyroid gland (while being treated for hyperthyroidism) may lead to reduced production of the thyroid hormones. ÂÂ Pituitary or Hypothalamic disease: When the thyroid gland does not receive adequate stimulus for the production of the hormones, it cannot function normally. This is what happens when the pituitary or the hypothalamus are afflicted by disease or injury. ÂÂ Certain drugs: Some medicines used for treating hyperthyroidism such as methimazole, propylthiouracil; lithium containing psychiatric medications, etc. can lead to hypothyroidism. ÂÂ Congenital absence of thyroid gland or a defective thyroid gland: This can lead to congenital hypothyroidism which needs to be detected in time to prevent complications in the infant. ¾¾ Symptoms The symptoms of hypothyroidism are often so subtle that they go unnoticed especially in the initial stages. People often mistake these for symptoms of normal aging. Occasionally, some patients may have no symptoms at all. However, most patients have a varying combination of the symptoms mentioned here - the severity of symptoms may depend on the duration of the illness and its gravity. ÂÂ Fatigue, weakness ÂÂ Weight gain ÂÂ Intolerance to cold ÂÂ Depression ÂÂ Irritability, mood instability ÂÂ Loss of memory ÂÂ Constipation ÂÂ Excessive sleepiness ÂÂ Dry and coarse hair, loss of hair ÂÂ Dry, rough and pale skin ÂÂ Abnormal menstrual cycles - Heavy or irregular menstrual periods ÂÂ Decreased libido ÂÂ Muscle cramps ÂÂ Decreased sweating ÂÂ Goiter ÂÂ As the disease progresses, the following www.bangalorehealthtv.com

symptoms may be noticed: Puffiness of face, hands and feet Thinning of the outer third of the eyebrows Slow speech Hoarseness of voice Low basal body temperature Bradycardia (heart rate of less than sixty beats per minute) ÂÂ Shallow and slow respiration ÂÂ Difficulty in swallowing ÂÂ Thickening of the skin ÂÂ Myxedema - marked by dry skin and swellings around lips and nose as well as mental deterioration ÂÂ Hypothyroidism in children can have a serious impact on the development of the child and can present as follows: ÂÂ Poor growth, short stature ÂÂ Delayed development of permanent teeth ÂÂ Delayed puberty ÂÂ Poor mental development ¾¾ Diagnosis The history of the patient and certain clinical signs seen in the patient can give the treating physician clues regarding the disease. Some of the common findings are: ÂÂ Poor muscle tone ÂÂ Sluggish reflexes ÂÂ Signs of anemia ÂÂ Visible skin changes - dry coarse rough skin ÂÂ Goiter - Abnormally enlarged thyroid gland ÂÂ Basal body temperature ¾¾ The patient’s symptoms and the physician’s clinical findings can be confirmed with the following investigations: ÂÂ Serum T3 ÂÂ Serum T4 ÂÂ Serum TSH ÂÂ 24 hour urine free T3 ÂÂ Antithyroid antibodies (for evidence of autoimmune disease) ÂÂ Anti-TPO antibodies in the blood (for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) ÂÂ Thyroid scan ÂÂ Chest x-ray (may show an enlarged heart) ÂÂ Serum cholesterol ÂÂ Testing for anemia (including ferritin) ÂÂ Prolactin level ÂÂ If a pituitary or hypothalamic cause is suspected, an MRI of the brain ¾¾ Complications Hypothyroidism can lead to a number of health problems if it is left untreated; some of the potential complications that may develop are listed here: ÂÂ Goiter: A large goiter can interfere with swallowing or breathing. ÂÂ Myxedema coma: A very severe form of hypothyroidism that is seen in people with untreated hypothyroidism. It is generally triggered by infection, illness, exposure to cold or to certain medications. This is a medical emergency and needs immediate treatment. ¾¾ Clinical signs of Myxedema

coma are:
ÂÂ ÂÂ
Temperature below normal Decreased breathing rate and shallow respiration ÂÂ Low blood pressure ÂÂ Low blood sugar ÂÂ Drowsiness, unresponsiveness, unconsciousness Infertility, miscarriage: Impaired fertility, difficulty in conceiving, easy miscarriage are other complications of hypothyroidism. In addition, infants born to mothers with uncontrolled hypothyroidism have greater risk of being born with birth defects. They are also prone to develop serious intellectual and developmental problems. Cardiac diseases: Hypothyroidism can lead to increased levels of the ‘ bad cholesterol’ (low-density lipoprotein / LDL). In the long run patients are also at risk for developing an enlarged heart (cardiomyopathy), heart failure and accumulation of fluid around the lungs (pleural effusion). Psychological problems: Depression, slowing down of the mental faculties, etc. may be seen over a period of time. Homeopathic treatment: Homeopathic medicines primarily work at the level of the immune system and gradually bring the deviation back towards normalcy. The medicines help in stimulating the gland to produce the hormones to the optimum level so that the requirement for external supplementation of hormones is minimal or none. ¾¾ Living with Hypothyroidism A few dietary and lifestyle changes can make significant difference to the patients and help them be in better control of their illness. These tips have been clinically verified time and again by our physicians and nutritionists and have been summarized here: ÂÂ Regular exercise: Exercising for at least 30 minutes (four to five times a week) can boost the metabolism thus promoting good health. ÂÂ Regular blood tests to monitor the thyroid levels: Your physician will advise you on how and when you must get the tests done. ÂÂ Take control of stress: Stress has been known to worsen cases of hypothyroidism especially if left uncontrolled. Take charge of your life and find effective ways to get rid of your stress. Try meditation and deepbreathing exercises for the same. In addition, there are certain foods that are known to stimulate the thyroid and the same can be included in the diet. These largely include foods rich in iodine, niacin, riboflavin, zinc, vitamin B6, vitamin C and vitamin E: Seaweeds (but avoid if you have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) l Strawberries l Tuna l Salmon l Eggs l Yogurt l Garlic l Whole grains l Prunes l Apricots l Potatoes l Dates l Bananas l Parsley l Extra-virgin olive oil

Have you been experiencing numbness or heaviness in the leg muscles while walking or climbing stairs or does the wound on your toes and feet take a very long time to heal? These are warning signals you are body is giving to act fast! We often see people ignoring these symptoms and many other indications like pale or bluish colour of the skin, poor nail growth on the toes or decreased hair growth on the legs. Ignorance is no longer bliss if you are experiencing any of these symptoms/signs. There are chances that you may be suffering from PAD i.e. peripheral arterial disease. PAD of the lower extremities affects approximately 50,000 people in India, although many patients are unaware of their condition or the seriousness of it. PAD patients not only have a chance of losing the leg (amputation) from “leg attack”, but also have a higher chance of future heart attack or stroke and amputation, can cause severe disability and diminished quality of life. If detected early, these can be prevented to a large extent by good medical therapy and lifestyle changes. Let’s delve deeper to get a better understanding of this condition.
i.e. the formation of plaque (blockage) that is made up of fatty deposits, cholesterol, calcium and other substances in the blood. Atherosclerosis can limit the ability of the narrowed arteries to increase delivery of blood and oxygen to tissues during periods of increased oxygen demand such as during exercise. When atherosclerosis is mild and the arteries are not substantially narrowed, atherosclerosis causes no symptoms. Therefore, many adults typically are unaware that their arteries are gradually accumulating cholesterol plaques. But when atherosclerosis becomes advanced with aging, it can cause critical narrowing of the arteries Research indicates that 50 percent of patients who undergo amputation due to peripheral artery disease die within five years. A growing global health concern, peripheral artery disease has increased in prevalence by nearly 24 percent worldwide over the most recent decade, from 164 million cases in 2000 to 202 million cases in 2010. ¾¾ Risk factors With risk factors including smoking, diabetes,
Peripheral Artery Disease – Ignorance is no longer bliss ¾¾
So, what is PAD? Peripheral arterial disease (PAD), also known as the peripheral vascular disease is a circulatory problem in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to your limbs and other parts of the body except the heart and brain. Majority of PAD occurs in the legs where the arteries get narrowed and hence do not supply enough blood to your limbs. Peripheral artery disease in the legs can often cause critical limb ischemia, in which poor blood circulation in the calf, ankle, foot and toes can lead to ulcerated sores, amputation and in some cases premature death. The most common cause of PAD is atherosclerosis

obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, age (50 or older) and familial history, peripheral artery disease narrows the vessels that supply oxygenated blood to the body, especially the limbs. Elevated blood pressure is correlated with an increase in the risk of developing PAD as well as in other associated coronary and cerebrovascular events (heart attack and stroke). People suffering from diabetes are vulnerable to PAD. Once affected, these can be treated with various methods with very good results. The higher the level of LDL cholesterol in your blood, the GREATER your chance of getting heart
AYURPHARMA FEBRUARY-2014
disease. The higher the level of HDL cholesterol in your blood, the LOWER your chance is of getting heart disease. Having healthy levels of both types of lipoproteins is important. Older age also is a risk factor for PAD. Plaque builds up in your arteries as you age. Older age combined with other risk factors, such as smoking or diabetes, also puts you at higher risk for P.A.D. ¾¾ Diagnosis PAD is diagnosed based on your medical & family history, physical examination and test results. Once you have been physically examined by your doctor and have shown signs/symptoms of PAD, your doctor would advise you to take up the first-in-line study of the ªª Ankle brachial pressure index (ABPI/ABI). The ABI compares blood pressure in your ankle to blood pressure in your arm. This test shows how well blood is flowing in your limbs. ABI can show whether PAD is affecting your limbs, but it won’t show which blood vessels are narrowed or blocked. A normal ABI result is 1.0 or greater (with a range of 0.90 to 1.30). The test takes about 10 to 15 minutes to measure both arms and both ankles. This test may be done yearly to see whether PAD is getting worse. ªª Doppler Ultrasound/ Ultrasound: - To look at the site and extent of atherosclerosis ªª Angiography: - A catheter is inserted into the common femoral artery in the thigh and selectively guided to the artery in question. This again is done to show the location and severity of a blocked blood vessel ªª CT/MR Angiography: - CT/MR provides complete evaluation of the aorta ( a large artery in the abdomen) and lower limb arteries without the need for an angiography. ¾¾ Treatment Treatments for peripheral arterial disease (P.A.D.) include lifestyle changes, medicines, and surgery(bypass procedures)or minimal procedures like angioplasty. The overall goals of treating PAD include reducing symptoms, improving quality of life, and preventing complications. Depending on the severity of the disease, the following steps can be taken ªª Quitting smoking. Your risk of P.A.D. increases four times if you smoke. Smoking also raises your risk for other diseases, such as coronary heart disease (CHD). ªª Managing blood pressure. ªª Managing the cholesterol levels in your blood ªª Managing your blood glucose (sugar) levels if you have diabetes. ªª Being physically active. Follow an exercise regime consistently to keep your PAD in check. Regular exercise for those with claudication (pain in the leg) helps in opening up alternative small vessels (collateral flow) and the limitation in walking often improves. Further treatment with surgery &/0r angioplasty depends on the severity of patient symptoms. ªª Angioplasty-Your doctor may recommend angioplasty to restore blood flow

through a narrowed or blocked artery. During this procedure, a catheter (thin tube) with a balloon at the tip is inserted into a blocked artery. The balloon is then inflated, which pushes plaque outward against the artery wall. This widens the artery and restores blood flow. A stent (a small mesh tube) may be placed in the artery during angioplasty. A stent helps keep the artery open after angioplasty is done. Some stents are coated with medicine to help prevent blockages in the artery. ªª Bypass grafting - Your doctor may recommend bypass grafting surgery if blood flow in your limb is blocked or nearly blocked. For this surgery, your doctor uses a blood vessel from another part of your body or an artificial tube called a graft. This graft bypasses (that is, goes around) the blocked part of the artery. The bypass allows blood to flow around the blockage. This surgery or angioplasty doesn’t cure P.A.D., but it may increase blood flow to the affected limb. ªª Atherectomy – it is a procedure that removes plaque buildup from an artery. During the procedure, a catheter is used to insert a small cutting device into the blocked artery. The device is used to shave or cut off plaque. The bits of plaque are removed from the body through the catheter or washed away in the bloodstream (if they’re small enough). ¾¾ Conclusion Adapting a healthy lifestyle and eating a healthy diet can reduce your risk of PAD to a considerable extent. Moreover, these positive lifestyle changes can also help prevent and control conditions that can lead to PAD, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, coronary artery disease and stroke.

Impact of computer use on children’s vision: Accommodative problems may occur as a result of prolonged activity without a significant break, the focusing system “locking in” to a particular target and viewing distance. Causes: ªª Excessive eye strain. ªª Dryness due to infrequent linking. ªª Uncorrected farsightedness can cause eye strain, even when clear vision can be maintained. ¾¾ Steps to visually friendly computer use: ªª Have the child’s vision checked. ªª A brief break every hour. ªª Carefully checking the height and position of the computer screen. ªª Carefully check for glare and reflection in the computer screen. ªª Adjust the amount of lighting in the room for sustained comfort. ¾¾ AMBLYOPIA: ªª Amblyopia (lazy eye) is the loss or lack of development of vision in an eye that is unrelated to any eye health problem. the presence of Amblyopia. The earlier it is diagnosed, the greater the chance for a successful treatment. The child is generally unaware of it. Covering or occluding ªª the better eye, either part-time or full-time, stimulates vision in the amblyopic eye. Vision in the amblyopic eye may continue to decrease if left untreated and eventually the eye becomes virtually unused. It is quite difficult to effectively treat Amblyopia at this point. Early detection and treatment of Amblyopia can help to reduce the chances of one eye becoming amblyopic. Amblyopia is a handicap because it can limit the occupational and leisure activities person can do. Activities requiring good depth perception may be difficult or impossible to perform. From my Diary
My Birth Story WEEK FOUR AND FIVE: The first part of the embryonic phase is over as soon as the egg is implanted ‘A marvelous metamorphosis transformation heralds after this .All that the mother eats determine the baby’s growth ...A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is of prime importance at this stage .This is also a very delicate period where if she does not take sufficient care she might abort even before registering her pregnancy. Read about all this in this episode through baby’s experience.
My birth story: week four and five.
This week marks the beginning of the embryonic period – called as Ama garbha in Ayurveda. From now on all my organs will start developing and some of them will also start functioning .That’s why doctors say that this is the time where baby is very sensitive to anything that might interfere with its development . There is a sac housing me called the amniotic sac which has a fluid in it .This fluid cushions me as I am growing .There is also a yolk sac which produces Red blood cells and delivers nutrients to me until I become independent and develop the placenta. In short the rudimentary versions of the placenta and umbilical cord which deliver nourishment and oxygen have already started functioning in me. Through the placenta I am exposed to what

After egg is implanted it is called as an embryo and it consists of 2 layers. From these layers all the organs and the body parts will grow. The primitive placenta also has 2 layers. At this point the cells will tunnel into the lining of the uterus creating space for the blood to flow so that the developed placenta will be able to provide nutrients and oxygen to your growing baby when it starts to function at the end of this week. All the nutrients provided to me are derived from my mom’s food but are not transmitted to me directly. It depends in fact on the nature and the quantity of the reserve and the capacity of her metabolism to create a nutritive environment .For accommodating me the uterus starts becoming bigger and because of this she has a repeated urge to urinate because of its pressure over the bladder. Unhealthy life style can lead to a miscarriage in this week even before registering her pregnancy. That’s why doctors recommend a healthy pregnancy diet because the needs of the body change when you are pregnant. Alcohol, smoking, drinking excess coffee or tea is said to affect normal growth of the baby. Even stress can lead to miscarriage. Medical complications can also affect many women who are expecting. One of the diseases of grave concern is Diabetes during pregnancy. Preeclampsia or high blood pressure present during pregnancy is said to have a relation with miscarriage with early pregnancy .Other factors associated with miscarriages is auto immunity, Rubella, chlamydia, Ectopic pregnancy. Infections also lead to miscarriages. If there was an issue with the quality of partner’s sperm there could be chances of losing the baby. Another set of causes include collagen vascular diseases .Collagen is a tough fibre like protein that makes up 30% of body protein and contributes to structure like tendons bones , and connective tissue .When there is abnormality in functioning because of loss / over productivity it could trigger abortion . In pregnancy uterine cervix has 2 major functions
AYURPHARMA FEBRUARY-2014
first it retains its physical integrity by remaining firm during pregnancy as the uterus dramatically enlarges .This physical enlargement is critical so that the developing foetus can remain in the uterus until the appropriate time for delivery . Secondly in preparation for labour and delivery the cervix softens and becomes more flexible a process called as cervical ripening. These chemical and physical changes are required for cervical dilatation labour and delivery of a foetus. Cervical incompetence can cause abortion. Abnormal anatomy of uterus is another reason for miscarriages. A bridge or a septum dividing uterus into sections would hamper the chances of an embryo to be implanted in this septum leading to a greater possibility of miscarrying. A tipped uterus where the uterus is tipped to either side or towards the front has a higher chance of miscarriage because the embryo would implant very low in the uterus. Blighted ovum is a condition where a fertilised egg which is implanted will not undergo any development. .Here there is a gestational sac with /without a yolk sac and there is total absence of any kind of foetal growth. In ectopic pregnancy, the fertilised egg implants in the fallopian tube /ovary etc. instead of uterus. During fertilisation if there is an error in genetic coding it can lead to growth of an abnormal tissue. It is a rare kind of pregnancy where there is no foetus but just a presence of an incomplete mole. Keeping all these factors in mind it’s very important for would be mother to keep herself in good health before planning a pregnancy. With a desire to make me healthy and good looking my mom gave up non congenial diet and mode of life. .She was in high spirits ,pious , decorated with ornaments , wearing clean clothes performed auspicious deeds . Her sleeping and sitting place was covered with soft cushions and mattresses having a proper head rest which would make her feel very comfortable. She used palatable, liquid, sweet and unctuous substances treated with appetising things .For her external use and also for internal medication she used jeevaneeya group of herbs the physician gave her to protect me from all mishaps . Whatever eatables and drinkables consumed by my mom, become congenial to me and so her diet should comprise taking into consideration her place of living, time, season and digestive capacity. Her contact with people was meritorious, auspicious, pious new and intact. The house where she stayed was fumigated by fragrant herbs to make it free from insects like mosquitos etc. Affectionate and good behaviour of husband, family members and care takers help in maintenance of pregnancy .A pregnant woman who is in grief does not create a conducive and healthy environment for a new foetus to thrive. The following articles are considered beneficial for pregnant woman. Sali and shastika rice , green gram , wheat , parched flour of rice , butter , ghee , milk , Rasala –( a preparation of curds with sugar and condiments) , honey , jack fruit , banana , gooseberry fruits , grapes /raisins , sour and sweet substances ,

anointment with cooling agents , musk , sandal and camphor , wearing of garlands , moon light bath , soft massage , soft bed , cool air , anabolic and gratifying edibles , pampering by house members and pleasing mode of life along with desired food . The pregnant woman should wear amulet made of trivrit (a herb Ipomoea turpethium) in her waist. Having doubts of conception from the first month itself she should take medicated/non medicated milk repeatedly in desired quantity considering her digestive power and strength. Congenial diet should be taken in the morning and evening .During first month herbs Madhuyesti ----Glycyrrhiza glabra, Vidari ---Ipomoea digitata etc. should be taken with butter /honey followed by use of milk as an after drink . Garbha stapaka drugs are those which counter act the effect of harmful factors for foetus and help in its proper maintenance thus these can be considered even as a treatment to avoid abortion Kashchapa Ayurvedic Acharya a great paediatrician in those days has advised these herbs to be used as a routine by pregnant women for maintenance of proper health growth and development of the foetus. Sometime after this week my mom will be able to find out that she is carrying me. For the most accurate results wait until the end of the 5th week to take a home pregnancy urine test i.e. a week past the expected period because during that time most newly pregnant woman have enough human chorionic gonadotropin HCG in the urine to detect it in urine .It is recommended to take the results first thing in the morning when the urine is most concentrated. If the test is negative and your period is still absent you have to wait for another few days or a week and try again. Do not come to a conclusion one negative result means you are not pregnant. If you don’t get your period as expected remember that you might still be pregnant. If you see a positive result on your test even if it is very light chances are good that you are pregnant .Sometimes you may get a faint positive test. To be sure repeat the test again after 4 to 5 days. If the result is positive good! If second test is negative you may have had an early miscarriage. 20% to 30 % of all pregnancies end in miscarriage and is due to the fact that the fertilised egg has not been able to implant itself securely into the uterine wall. Genetic malformation is also another reason for miscarriage in this period .It’s a nature s way of terminating a pregnancy that would not be viable. Other reasons include unhealthy eating habits, over exertion, underlying medical conditions like stress, hypertension, auto immune diseases, thyroid problems, diabetes, Poly cystic ovaries etc. Sometimes when you take a pregnancy test around the time your MC is due, and it shows a weak positive result. Few days later you may get MC and doctors call this a chemical pregnancy. Chemical pregnancy means a miscarriage happened to a patient and biochemical tests such as beta HCG in blood or urine were the only evidence that there was a pregnancy and miscarriage happened before an ultra sound could show a gestational sac before 5th week of pregnancy or within about after you missed your menstrual period. www.bangalorehealthtv.com

INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT (IQ)
An Intelligence Quotient or IQ is a score derived from one of several different standardized tests attempting to measure intelligence. The term “IQ,” a translation of the German Intelligent-Quotient, was coined by the German psychologist William Stern in I9I2 as a proposed method of scoring early modern children’s intelligence tests in the early 20th Century. Although the term “IQ” is still in common use, the scoring of modern IQ tests is now based on a projection of the subject’s measured rank on the Gaussian bell curve with a center value of 100, and a standard deviation of 15, although different tests may have different standard deviations. According to Dr. C. George Boeree of Shippensburg University, intelligence is a person’s capacity to ªª acquire knowledge (learn and understand), ªª apply knowledge (solve problems), and ªª Engage in abstract reasoning. It is the power of one’s intellect, and as such is clearly a very important aspect of one’s overall wellbeing. Since the twentieth century, IQ scores have increased at an average rate of around three IQ points per decade in most parts of the world. IQ scores have been shown to be associated with such factors as occurrence and prevalence of a disease or health condition, parental social status , parental IQ genetics Vs nurture(environment),interest in studies and work, gender(men score 3-4 points more than women),racial influence, Cultural influence, etc. Since IQ is substantially heritable, it is reasonable to expect that genetic influences on traits like IQ should become less important as one gains experience with
24
www.bangalorehealthtv.com
age. Surprisingly, the opposite occurs. Heritability measures in infancy are as low as 20%, around 40% in middle childhood, and as high as 80% in adulthood. While its inheritance has been investigated for nearly a century, controversy remains as to how much is inheritable Environmental factors also play an important role in determining IQ. Proper childhood nutrition appears critical for cognitive development and hence malnutrition can lower IQ. Musical training in childhood also increases IQ Research on the role of the environment in children’s intellectual development has demonstrated that a stimulating environment can dramatically increase IQ, whereas a deprived environment can lead to a decrease in IQ Studies confirm that IQ is fixed. Neurologically speaking the volumes of the grey and white matter of the frontal lobe in the brain have also been associated with general intelligence. Children with poor scholastic performance may feel alienated. Consequently, they may be more likely to engage in delinquent behavior. Also high IQ indicates that the productivity of the individual, his income, his “success” in the work field will also be sky-high. However, high IQ in itself will not help, utilising it in the correct place is more important. Once thought immutable, recent research suggests that certain mental activities can change the brain’s raw ability to process information, leading to the conclusion that intelligence can be altered or changed over time. According to Schmidt and Hunter, “for hiring employees without previous experience in the job the
AYURPHARMA FEBRUARY-2014
most valid predictor of future performance is general mental ability.”So for job interviews and recruitments. lQ is a major determinant for selection. Try some of the following tips and boost your IQ and overall brain power:  Sketch and draw: Imagine seeing an object from every angle and sketch the views afterwards. Thinking in pictures is essential for complex reasoning. Ace puzzles, crosswords, mind - benders, tricky problems and brain -teasers. They help increase your creativity and problem solving skills. Moreover, they keep your mind charged and excited. Practice doing a Rubik’s Cube or play games like chess and crossword puzzles, sudoku. They help you to think strategically and it can be fun at the same time.  Smell the air: Certain fragrances help you think clearly and cut down on mistakes. Here are a few fragrances listed to help you think better and clearer: ªª Lemon scents stimulate your concentration. ªª Lavender helps you relax and think more clearly ªª jasmine has the ability to excite, resulting in quicker thinking ªª Rose induces the feel-good factor ªª Energizers include peppermint, cypress and lemon. ªª Relaxants include yiang ylang, geranium and rose ªª Rosemary increase blood flow to the brain ªª Sage helps improve memory and concentration  Breathe deeply when you feel lazy or sleepy  Defocus your brain : Boost your brain power by defocusing your brain for 10 minutes at the end of the day. Sit comfortably and let your thoughts flow without any interventions and see the vastness of the brain’s imagination power.  Steer clear of caffeine and alcohol as they lead to anxiety and deprive the body of its minerals. Stop smoking too.  Be a multi-tasker  Position yourself for right posture  Stretch your mind wider: Try connecting unconnected things by trying to link them together. This breaks down the critical ability that interferes with the flow of ideas.  Relaxation boosts puzzle-solving power  Learn new languages or new hobbies.  Exercise is the key to mental stamina  Sleep well for at least 7 to 8 hours  Time matters: Use your brain when it’s at its sharpest-early in the morning. Research shows that taking tests before midday boosts success rates by up to five percent.  The magical herb Ginkgo biloba helps regenerate the brain faster and work better  Go classical: In a US study, listening to a Mozart piano sonata improved students’ 3-D problem solving abilities by IS percent. Aim for 10 minutes of Classic FM a day.  Eat that meal: Never skip meals unless totally inevitable. A carbs -rich meal can spell disaster. So don’t dump your meal with foods

rich in carbs. Avoid flour, sugar, potatoes, rice and other carbohydrates before a meeting or an exam. Opt for a balanced meal. Chew the gum: It improves memory and thinking, raises your heart rate, delivers more oxygen and glucose to the brain, while saliva triggers a surge of insulin, stimulating learning and memory receptors in the brain. The Big B - Vitamin B: To boost your brain power look for vitamin B, found in oats, tuna, chicken, whole wheat and bananas. Vitamin B6 aids memory, while B1, B2, B3 and BI2 help manufacture and repair brain tissue. Reading is bliss. So read on. Try your hand at writing rather than typing Crack those codes in cryptography Record your improvement on a line graph every week Be curious and inquisitive Laughter is the best medicine Something fishy: Omega-3 oils, found in walnuts, flaxseed and especially fish are not only healthy for the heart. but also are brain boosters. They help avoid certain imperative diseases which affect the brain. Eating at least three servings a week of fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel and tuna is a good start. Try low fat dried fruits.lt helps boost your brain’s working power. Cut down that “bad” fat: For two reasons cut down that fat. Fat can reduce the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your brain, and it may also slow down the metabolism of glucose, the form of sugar the brain utilizes as food. You can still get up to 30 percent of your daily calories in the form of fat, but most of it should come from afore mentioned fish, olive oil, nuts and seeds. Stay away from Tran’s fats, the hardened oils that are abundant in crackers and snack foods. Play anything from “Ring around the Rosie” to board or video games.lt helps you build on tactics and strategies. Cycles of consciousness: Your consciousness waxes and wanes throughout the day . For most it seems to go through 90 minute cycles, with 30 minutes of lower consciousness. Watch yourself to recognize this cycle. If you learn to recognize and track your mental state, you can concentrate on important mental tasks when your mind is most “awake”. For creative insight into a problem, do the opposite. Work on it when you are in a drowsy state, when your conscious mind has slowed down. Meditate for 20 - 30 minutes or do some yoga and pranayama, Learn how to play an instrument of your interest. Lower cholesterol implies higher brain efficiency.

Women health
Periodontal health and women Gynecologic problems
Periodontal disease which affects more than 50% of the world’s population is a major cause of tooth loss. Although it affects both men and women equally, women by their own unique physiology are more susceptible to gum diseases and its complications. If not treated early they will ultimately result in tooth loss. ¾¾ What makes women susceptible? Although periodontal disease is predominantly microbial in origin and develops due to accumulation of plaque around the teeth (in a badly maintained mouth) due to release of injurious substances causing initiation and progression of gum diseases. Studies have shown the presence of systemic diseases, genetic susceptibility, stress and environmental factors like smoking will decide the severity of the disease. Among these, some factors predominantly seen in women are hormone related factors and stress. The hormone related conditions which affect the gums are seen in the various stages of a woman’s life. They are: ÂÂ Puberty ÂÂ Pregnancy ÂÂ Menopause ÂÂ Women on oral contraceptive ¾¾ Puberty gingivitis At the onset of puberty, because of the increased levels of sex hormones, there is a tendency for the gums to bleed on slight provocation like brushing; there is slight enlargement of papilla of the gingival and slight increase in the mobility of the teeth. These effects are more pronounced when the oral hygiene is poor. ¾¾ Pregnancy gingivitis During pregnancy, starting from the first trimester with the increase in the level of sex hormones there is a tendency of enlargement of the gums. Occasionally, tumor-like masses on one or two teeth might develop which is not a tumor in the true sense but increase in the size of the gums. Again the intensity of changes in the gingiva during pregnancy depends on the status of oral hygiene. If the home care is poor the disease expression is more. Also it has been suggested that increased levels of sex hormones might act as food substrate for certain microbes which are normally present in the mouth which now increase more rapidly since they have a good media to grow in. ¾¾ Women on oral contraceptives The effect of oral contraceptives is almost similar to the changes during pregnancy. ¾¾ Menopause

Following menopause there is dry mouth because of the atrophy to salivary glands and the gingiva becomes dry and more prone to tooth brushing injury, since the protective function of saliva is decreased, there are greater chances of infection. In addition, since there are generalized osteoporotic changes involving the bone in general, the bone which holds the teeth also becomes susceptible to lose height. ¾¾ Stress In addition to the above factors studies have shown that women are more prone to psychological stress which in turn makes them more susceptible to diseases of the gums. ¾¾ How do you prevent? Though the changes mentioned above may not be seen in 100% of the women but they appear more frequently in women with poor oral hygiene. ¾¾ Precautions to be taken 1. Puberty gingivitis: No special precautions. Proper maintenance, enlargement subsides once the hormone level becomes stable. If oral hygiene is poor, cleaning the teeth is advised. 2. Pregnancy gingivitis: During pregnancy although mild changes are seen in all women, less than 50% of women exhibit fully developed gingivitis. The effect can be minimized by proper oral hygiene, dental cleaning, and use of antiseptic mouthwash. Following delivery the signs of gingivitis normally regress. If there is gross enlargement of gums it requires surgical correction. 3. Menopause/ Oral contraceptives: Oral hygiene maintenance, professional cleaning of teeth, use of antiseptic mouthwash. ¾¾ The effect of gum disease on the general health Recent studies of gum disease have shown that periodontal disease can influence systemic health mainly by releasing injurious substances from bacteria present in the infected gums reach different parts of the body through the blood stream causing systemic damage. In particular it may be of interest to women to know that diseased gums can lead to complications of pregnancy like preterm labor, low birth weight and increased eclampsia during labor. Hence, it is advised to give special attention during the entire life span, which will give longetivity of teeth which enhances the personal appearance with a beautiful smile; as well as reduce the complications of systemic health. So, you women run to the dentist to have healthy teeth.

Fruit facts
Banana facts that may surprise you After Reading THIS, you’ll NEVER look at a banana in the same way again!!
Dr Manjushree Suratkal, Mangalore
Bananas are probably the most widespread fruit crop in the whole world. They are known for their sweet taste, good nutritional properties with their high content in potassium and fibers (and vitamins such as B6, C and A), and best of all their ease of use: just peel and eat! The yellow bananas we eat today are a cross between the green and the red banana tree and this cross is sterile (hence the lack of seeds in the banana). ¾¾ Food Uses The ripe banana is utilized in a multitude of ways in the human diet ªª Peel and eat, sliced and served in fruit cups and salads, sandwiches, custards and gelatins; being mashed and incorporated into ice cream, bread, muffins, and cream pies. ªª Ripe bananas are often sliced lengthwise, baked or broiled, and served (perhaps with a garnish of brown sugar or chopped peanuts) as an accompaniment for ham or other meats. ªª Ripe bananas may be thinly sliced and cooked with lemon juice and sugar to make jam or sauce, stirring frequently during 20 or 30 minutes until the mixture jells. ªª Whole, peeled bananas can be spiced by adding
them to a mixture of vinegar, sugar, cloves and cinnamon which has boiled long enough to become thick, and then letting them cook for 2 minutes. ªª Ripe bananas are mashed, mixed with coconut cream, scented with Citrus leaves, and served as a thick, fragrant beverage. ªª Unpeeled or peeled, unripe bananas are baked whole, or the peeled fruit may be grated or sliced, wrapped, with or without the addition of coconut cream, in banana leaves, and baked in ovens. ªª Banana puree can be used as infant food ªª Puree can be stored by adding ascorbic acid to prevent discoloration for use in baby foods, cake, pie, ice cream, cheesecake, doughnuts, milk shakes and many other products. ªª A solution of the ash from burned leaves and pseudo stems is used as salt in seasoning vegetable curries. The ash contains roughly (per 100 g): potassium, 255 mg; magnesium, 27 mg; phosphorus, 33 mg; calcium, 6.6 mg; sodium, 51 mg. ªª Dried green plantains, ground fine and roasted, have been used as a substitute for coffee. ¾¾ Medicinal Uses There are numerous health benefits of bananas, due to its nutritional properties. Bananas containing three natural sugars-sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber, a banana gives an instant, sustained, and

substantial boost of energy. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses, and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet. ªª Depression: According survey undertaken on the people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier. ªª Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia. ªª Blood Pressure: It has extremely high potassium but low salt, having a perfect ratio for preventing high blood pressure. ªª Brain Power: Banana rich in potassium can assist learning by making pupils more alert. ªª Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives. They also contain pectin, a soluble fiber (hydrocolloid) that can help normalize movement through the digestive tract. ªª Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach, and with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system. ªª Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief. ªª Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Help successful at reducing swelling and irritation. ªª Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system. ªª Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach. ªª Temperature control: banana helps to cool and can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of pregnant. ªª Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer, tryptophan. ªª Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain, and regulates your body’s water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack ªª Strokes: Eating bananas as part of a regular diet can reduce the risk of stroke. ªª Eyesight Protection: at least 3 servings of fruit per day have a reduced risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), the primary cause of vision loss in older adults, compared to persons who consume less than 1.5 servings of fruit daily.

Healthy Bones: Bananas are an exceptionally rich source of fructooligosaccharide, a compound that nourishes probiotic (friendly) bacteria in the colon. These beneficial bacteria produce enzymes that increase our digestive ability and protect us from unhealthy bacteria infections. Thanks to fructooligosaccharides, probiotic bacteria can increase both in number and functionality, increasing our body’s ability to absorb calcium. In addition, green bananas contain indigestible short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that are very nutrient to the cells that make up the mucosa of the stomach. These cells, when healthy, absorb calcium much more efficiently ªª Healthy Kidney: daily consumption of whole bananas is highly protective to kidney health. Bananas were especially protective. Women eating bananas four to six times a week reduce the risk of developing the disease. Frequent consumption of bananas, cabbage and root vegetables, may reduce risk of kidney cancer as it contain high amounts of antioxidant phenolic compounds, while cabbage is rich in sulfur, necessary for effective detoxification of potential carcinogens. ªª Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood-sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness. ªª Smoking: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. They contain vitamins B6 and B12 they contain, as well as potassium and magnesium: these substances help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal. ªª Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape! So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. ¾¾ All parts of the banana plant have medicinal applications: The flowers is helpful in bronchitis and dysentery and on ulcers; cooked flowers are given to diabetics; the astringent plant sap in cases of hysteria, epilepsy, leprosy, fevers, hemorrhages, acute dysentery and diarrhea, and it is applied on hemorrhoids, insect and other stings and bites; young leaves are placed as poultices on burns and other skin afflictions; the astringent ashes of the unripe peel and of the leaves are taken in dysentery and diarrhea and used for treating malignant ulcers; the roots are administered in digestive disorders, dysentery and other ailments; banana seed mucilage is given in cases of catarrh and diarrhea in India. Antifungal and antibiotic principles are found in the peel and pulp of fully ripe bananas. If you wish to store bananas for a long time (up to 2 months), it is possible to freeze them. To do this, simply remove the peel and sprinkle some lemon juice over the pulp to prevent discoloration; then wrap them in plastic www.bangalorehealthtv.com

Body piercing has been in vogue in our culture from times immemorial. But now it has moved to a different level with people becoming more adventurous and wanting to make a statement. The common areas being the ears, nose and navel. It is usually done under all aseptic precautions under local anaesthesia hence making it a ‘Painless Body Piercing’ experience. After care is very important and the healing period for piercings may vary between 3 months to a year depending on the area involved. Though this is a simple procedure, it has to be done with proper knowledge of the anatomy and under proper aseptic conditions to prevent any complications. The most common complication is a keloid formation and the second being infection. Infection in the ear cartilage is a devastating complication as the whole ear cartilage could die leaving behind a shriveled, deformed ear. ¾¾ Points to remember: 1. Read about the procedure and assure yourself that you want it. Remember that once done it’s going to be there for life if not the jewelry, at least the scar. 2. Always go to a qualified professional or a surgeon. Most importantly if the centre looks unhealthy or dirty ...Walk right out. 3. Allow the piercing to heal properly before you change the ornament. 4. Clean the piercing regularly as advised and don’t neglect any signs of infection or pus 5. “Spin” the ornament (turning the jewelry to allow the ointment to reach all areas of the piercing) as advised regularly. 6. Look for jewelry where the gems are mechanically set into the metal rather than glued. Glued jewelry cannot be sterilised Remember you can rush yourself and the surgeon but you cannot rush your body to heal! So, give it proper time according to the area. ¾¾ Daily Care Routine: ÂÂ Do not touch your piercing unless you are cleaning it. ÂÂ While healing, your piercing will need to be cleaned once daily. ÂÂ Cleaning more often than this will harm your piercing.

You will need to use an antibacterial soap (e.g. Dettol Liquid Soap). ¾¾ Cleaning: 1. W ash your hands with antibacterial soap and wet the piercing with luke warm water. 2. P ut a few drops of antibacterial soap on the piercing and work it into a lather & clean with a cotton bud (ear bud). 3. T ry to loosen any crusted discharge and tease it off the jewelry and your skin with the cotton bud. 4. L eave the antibacterial soap on the piercing for a few minutes while moving the jewelry back and forth (spin), allowing the disinfectant to penetrate the piercing. 5. R inse with water and air dry thoroughly. Do not dry with a towel, which may get entangled and pull on the jewelry and may also carry bacteria. So the best way to have a beautiful body accessory is to be educated about the procedure, knowing what you want, taking care to get it done by qualified professionals, using proper medical grade jewelry and not neglecting any problems that may arise.

Accumulation of Fat
How Does Fat Accumulate Inside One’s Body ?
Dr S S Hiremath Dhanvantari Hospital , Rajaji nagar, Bangalore Ph:
Adipose tissue is specialized connective tissue that functions as the major storage site for fat in the form of triglycerides. There Are Two Different Types of Adipose Tissues, namely ÂÂ White adipose tissue ÂÂ Brown adipose tissue Most Adipose Tissue is White. White Adipose Tissue Does Three Functions, namely ÂÂ Heat insulation ÂÂ Mechanical cushion (adipose tissue also surrounds internal organs and provides protection for these organs.) ÂÂ A source of energy The adipose tissue which is directly below the skin (subcutaneous adipose tissue) specially acts as the heat insulator of the body. It conducts heat only one third compared to other tissues. The degree of insulation is dependent upon the thickness of this fat layer. ¾¾ Lipogenesis Lipogenesis is the deposition of fat. This process occurs in adipose tissue and in the liver. The excess calories (consumed more than what actually needed for the current physical activity ) is stored in adipose tissue. Carbohydrate and protein consumed in the diet can be converted to fat. The carbohydrates can be stored as glycogen in the liver and muscle and can also be converted to triglycerides in the liver and transferred to adipose tissue for storage. Amino acids from proteins are used for new protein synthesis or they can be converted to carbohydrate and fat. Fatty acids, in the form of triglycerides are consumed through the diet or synthesized by the liver .Very little synthesis of free fatty acids occurs in the cells of adipose tissue (adipocytes). Triglycerides are the most important source of fatty acids, because this is the form in which dietary lipids are assembled by the digestive system and liver. Triglycerides are made up of long chain of fatty acids .These are hydrolyzed (broken) to glycerol and free fatty acids by an enzyme called Lipoprotein Lipase (LPL). The free fatty acids are taken up by cells of adipose tissues and stored again as triglycerides through a complex process Insulin, a hormone secreted by the cells of the pancreas, plays an important role in the lipogenic process. The net effect of insulin is to ÂÂ Increase storage ÂÂ Block mobilization and oxidation of fatty acids Insulin stimulates LPL formation. The LPL breaks the circulating to free fatty acids which can enter the adipocyte. Insulin is also required for the transport of

Unlike the product currently available in the market, both 150 and 440 mg formulations of CANMAb™ can be stored for 1 month which is an important offering for patients in India, as it will ensure that there is no under dosing or wastage of drug which is quite common today. In addition, CANMAb’s 150 mg formulation, priced at Rs 19,500/vial, will allow extra savings to patients as they can buy smaller quantities as per their requirement. Developing a quality biosimilar monoclonal antibody requires high technical skills, significant investments in clinical development and manufacturing and long gestation periods resulting in significantly higher costs of development and manufacturing compared to common chemistry-based pharmaceutical drugs. India is witnessing increased usage of targeted therapies like biologics as compared to cytotoxics. This trend is likely to continue given the improved treatment outcomes. The relatively higher cost of developing biologics means these drugs remain unaffordable for a large section of the population. The introduction of high quality biosimilars like CANMAb™ will make access more affordable and thereby expand the patient pool. Set right loopholes in health schemes Karnataka Private Hospitals Forum urges Government of Karnataka
Karnataka Private Hospitals Forum on February 1st, 2014, organized a press conference on the Proposed Universal Health Insurance by Government of Karnataka, which poses a major challenge in the implementation of the schemes without any scientific strategy. One of the burning challenges that all private medical institutions and doctors are currently facing is in the effective and sustainable implementation of the Government health schemes in their institutions. This PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP is facing many critical challenges and is on the verge of an irreversible breakdown says Dr. Prashanth katakol, Convenor of Karnataka Private Hospitals Forum. There is a gross overlap of population covered for the same illnesses under various schemes. 1. These schemes provide for only select surgeries in select hospitals at select package rates, benefitting only 3-5% of the diseased while the remaining 9597% of non-surgical aliments are getting treated with “out-of-pocket” expenses by the diseased families. 2. Extension of target beneficiaries from less than 30% of the population to >80% population due to unmonitored issue of BPL cards. 3. Need better planning of schemes considering OPD, investigations, medicines, co-morbidities, extended medical treatment into the schemes. Added to this is the Karnataka Government’s new intention to offer healthcare to all its citizens. This additional plan of covering almost all the citizens of the state under them in an ‘assumed’ partnership with the private healthcare industry is posing serious challenges. We are committed to serve the economically challenged in the State of Karnataka, we feel that adequate due diligence has to be given while planning and executing the same under the health schemes taking the healthcare service providers across the

These should then be reviewed annually and revised as thought appropriate. ªª To subject all the schemes to IRDA norms. India should be an active centre for ethical clinical research ISCR releases Code for Conduct of Clinical Research in India
“India must become an active centre for ethical clinical research and ‘Health India’ which emphasizes a collaborative approach by all disciplines of medicine should be our vision,” said distinguished academician and clinical pharmacologist, Padmashree Prof. Ranjit Roy Chaudhury. He was speaking as Guest of Honour at ‘Research at Crossroads’, the 7th Annual Conference being held by Indian Society of Clinical Research in Bangalore today. Prof Chaudhury shared the fundamental features of his report ‘Professor Ranjit Roy Chaudhury Expert Committee to Formulate Policy and Guidelines for Approval of New Drugs, Clinical Trials and Banning of Drugs’. Underlying the recommendations was the need to ensure a fair, transparent and honest framework that would build credibility for clinical research amongst the public. He also highlighted the need to create awareness about the contribution and value of ethically conducted research to healthcare. Prof Chaudhury acknowledged the support and contribution of ISCR towards developing the regulatory framework for clinical research. He hoped that in the near future, India would develop a transparent regulatory system for better management and conduct of clinical research in India and that there would be greater interaction between academia and industry. On the occasion, ISCR released the ‘ISCR Code for Conduct of Clinical Research in India’. The 12 point patient-centric code applicable to all ISCR members reinforces their commitment to ethical, scientific and regulatory compliance while engaging in any clinical research activities. Earlier, Suneela Thatte, President, ISCR, stressed on the need to develop a clinical research agenda in India given the country’s huge disease burden. ‘India’s emergence as a knowledge and innovation hub cannot happen without commitment to research and
development. Affordable healthcare can only become a reality when patients benefit through local innovation,’ she said. The inaugural session also had Dr Rebecca Li, Executive Director, MRCT Center at Harvard who spoke about the need to have all stakeholders involved in the regulatory process to ensure that clinical research in India develops to the potential it showed a few years ago. Over 200 professionals across the clinical research spectrum came together for engaging and stimulating discussions on topics around Research at Crossroads, a theme reflective of the increasing challenges being faced by the clinical research fraternity. The Indian Society for Clinical Research (ISCR) is an association of clinical research professionals that brings together all those who are engaged in clinical research activities in India and provides a forum for exchange of information and learning. ISCR aims to build awareness of clinical research as a specialty in India and to facilitate its growth in the country while helping to evolve the highest standards of quality and ethics. Education, Awareness & Legislation the key to defeat cancer
Every year on the 4th day of February, World Cancer Day is observed across the world to spread awareness against the dreaded cancer epidemic. The theme for World Cancer Day 2014 is “Reduce stigma and dispel myths about cancer”.
In our country cancer remains the second biggest cause of death after heart disease. During the period from 1964-2006 a total of 2,60,000 cancer cases were registered and there were 1,35,000 cancer deaths among the resident population of Mumbai. During the year 2008, a total of 7308 cancer deaths were recorded in Mumbai Municipal Corporation. More than 11 lakh people are diagnosed with cancer in India every year. About 6 lakh patients die due to the disease annually. Lung cancer is the commonest cause of cancer related death in males and breast cancer in females. Tobacco related cancers which include lung cancer, head and neck cancer and urinary bladder cancer constitute 38% of all cancers in males and 25% of all cancers in females. In males lung cancer has the highest incidence followed by digestive tract cancers and head and neck cancers. In females the commonest cancer is breast cancer followed by cervix and ovary. Presently, according to 2011 statistics, breast cancer accounts for 30% of all cancers in women. Based on results from a recent study 1 in 28 women develop breast cancer during her lifetime. This is higher in urban areas being 1 in 22 in a lifetime compared to rural areas where this risk is relatively much lower being 1 in 60 women developing breast cancer in their lifetime. The idea for this World Cancer Day is to raise awareness and debunking the 4 myths about cancer: ÂÂ We don’t need to talk about cancer ÂÂ Cancer... there are no signs and symptoms ÂÂ There is nothing I can do about cancer ÂÂ I don’t have the right to cancer care There is poor awareness about cancer including risk factors, early detection, diagnosis and treatment. Cancer still remains a taboo in our society and patients fear stigma and discrimination in society. This prevents them from seeking right help at the right time and at the right place. There is a misconception in our country that cancer is always hereditary and can be contagious. These myths need to be dispelled by appropriate education and counseling. Misinformation

and lack of awareness causes many patients to seek alternative unproven and unscientific traditional methods of treatment causing delays and ultimately a poor outcome. In fact many patients hide the fact that they are undergoing cancer treatment from even close friends and family. Several patients cured from cancer are reluctant to participate in public forums related to cancer education although this trend is changing and more cancer survivors are playing an active role in education. Dr. Nilesh Lokeshwar, Medical Oncologist, Global Hospitals, Mumbai says, “Currently, 7.6 million people die from cancer worldwide every year, out of which, 4 million people die prematurely (aged 30 to 69 years). Unless urgent action is taken to raise awareness about the disease and to develop practical strategies to address cancer, by 2025, this is projected to increase to an alarming 6 million premature cancer deaths per year.” Dr. Lokeshwar further adds, “Prevention is the most cost effective long term strategy for the control of cancer. Tobacco use is the most common risk factor for cancer and is linked to 70% of cancer related deaths. Tobacco is the single greatest avoidable risk factor for cancer. Inspite of its deleterious effects on health tobacco use is widespread in our society especially among the youth. The society and government has to implement initiative to put in place effective means to combat the tobacco epidemic through education, awareness and legislation.” “Cancer is curable if detected early”, this statement especially applies to cancers that can be detected early by screening methods such as breast cancer and cervical cancer. Early detection leads to diagnosis and appropriate treatment and a higher cure rate. This would be feasible through educating public and family physicians regarding signs and symptoms which can be due to cancer and when to seek opinion of cancer specialists.
