FOREWORD

Thumbay Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Hospital (TPTRH) – the biggest state-of-the-art rehabilitation hospital in the country; and Thumbay Dental Hospital – the first private dental hospital in the country and the largest academic dental hospital in the Middle East region’s private sector at Thumbay Medicity.

Welcome back after the holidays. I always feel that it is important to continue with our efforts to expand and improve the quality of education for all students. The university will continue to support and encourage the many life-enriching events, activities, and programs which provide our students with a well-rounded educational experience. Let me assure you that your experience at the university will be one of growth, change, and opportunity – the opportunity to learn new things, meet new people, exchange ideas, and debate issues. Many people will be there to guide you along the way. Faculty will inform and challenge you. Staff and administration will assist you. Fellow students will inspire you. To those who have already achieved a place in Gulf Medical University ‘Welcome and well done’ and to those who are seeking a place ‘We look forward to having you with us’. I was very happy to initiate over 400 students during the White Coat ceremony into various programs offered by the university. To all the newcomers I extend a warm welcome. They are about to become part of the long and distinguished tradition that our university has worked toward over the last 20 years. His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council UAE and Ruler of Ajman officially launched Thumbay Medicity and opened

I am confident that Thumbay Medicity will emerge as one of the top healthcare, education, and research destinations in the region. I hope that this endeavor will give further fillip to the growth of medical tourism in the region. The clinical experience gained at Thumbay Medicity will immensely benefit the students of Gulf Medical University, the next generation of medical professionals who will set the course of healthcare technology and practice in the region and beyond. Thumbay Medicity will have a floating population of 20,000 daily, availing its state-of-theart healthcare, medical education, and research facilities. His Excellency Humaid Al Qutami honored leading physical therapy and rehabilitation experts at the ‘Conference on Innovations in Rehabilitation Practice’ organized by Thumbay Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital. Over 250 professionals and students attended the conference. We were honored to host His Excellency Navdeep Singh Suri, Indian Ambassador to the UAE, His Excellency Mr. Liborio Stellino, Ambassador of Italy in the UAE, Her Excellency Ms. Valentina Setta, Consul General of Italy in UAE, and Mr. Wasim Akram, former Pakistani cricketer who attended the conference as special dignitaries. To mark the Year of Zayed celebrations, and as part of the CSR activity, Thumbay Foundation organized a month long Joy of Giving Campaign, across

all divisions of the group. More than 150 students from Human Appeal International benefited from the campaign and received various gifts. Thumbay Group’s Healthcare Division expanded its networks of state-of-the-art family clinics and pharmacies by opening a new Thumbay Clinic and Thumbay Pharmacy in Abu Shagara, Sharjah. Thumbay Hospitals and Thumbay Clinics organized health camps and awareness programs during the summer months, benefiting many residents. I am pleased to inform that Thumbay Technologies formally launched the ‘Sehatak’ software, an advanced hospital information management system compliant with EMRAM 7th Stage standards. It is specially designed to cater to the needs of large healthcare providers and hospital chains. Its advantages include reduced administration overheads and superior compatibility on account of being platform independent. It features advanced security features including biometric authentication. One of the highlights of the application is its speech recognition functionality, enabling the conversion of audio to text. Indian celebrity actors including Arjun Rampal, Sonu Sood, Luv Sinha, Siddhanth Kapoor, Harshvardhan Rane, Gurmeet Choudhary, and Sonal Chauhan visited Thumbay Dental and Thumbay Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation hospitals recently. Earlier, renowned Pakistani actors Hamza Ali Abbasi, Shaz Khan, and Ahad Raza Mir visited Thumbay Medicity. I have been invited as a keynote speaker at the Annual Islamic Medical Association South Africa Conference to be held next year in Cape Town, South Africa. Next month, I will deliver a keynote talk at the InnoHealth 2018 Conference in New Delhi, India. Let’s keep in touch. I wish you good times.

Hello! After a wonderfully relaxing summer holiday and Eid al Adha, most of us are ready to face school, work, and home with renewed vigor. It’s also a good time to change old habits and start afresh; for this, we have an in-depth feature on ‘Organizing Your Family’s Food Habits’ to help your family set the tone for good healthy eating for the entire year. Remember, it’s never too late to take care of your health! With most of us getting the kids ready to head back to school, there is a guide on

Like most of you, going on a summer holiday means less time for fitness, in addition to heavier meals with family and a relaxed vibe altogether. But getting back into the routine has never been easier with our feature on ‘Getting Back into the Fitness Game after the Holidays.’ Also, as October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, knowledge is key to saving lives. For this, we have several helpful features to spread awareness about the disease. In addition to these features, we have a lot more as always. Keep your letters coming and enjoy reading HEALTH!

Taking Unani Medicine

to the Next Level at Al

Hijama Alternative Medical Center What if you we told you there was a unique treatment which is endorsed by athletes as well as Bollywood celebrities and that could help you with everything from arthritis to migraine? The answer to that is Al Hijama.

A center of excellence in Unani treatments, Al Hijama Alternative Medical center is one of the most prominent alternative medical centers in Sharjah. Launched in 2010, the center boasts specialized Duo Unani medical practitioners - Dr. Syed Asaduddin Ahmed and Dr. Shaheen Fatima who have over 15 years of rich experience in the UAE. In 2017, Al Hijama Alternative Medical Center expanded to accommodate other AYUSH Systems. Now homeopathy and Ayurvedic therapies are also available.

Unani Medicine, as the name suggests, originated in Greece or Unan. It is based on the humoral theory which stipulates that the

body comprises of four humors (or Aqlat in Arabic). Various kinds of disease may be triggered from an imbalance in these fluids of the body which may also be diagnosed during an Al Hijama procedure. These imbalances can also be corrected through herbal

Dr. Syed became the first licensed Unani medicine practitioner in the UAE. Later in 2006, the MOH launched a distinct license specifically for Al Hijama and he is among the first in the UAE to receive this Al Hijama license. Moreover, he has also received lots of national and international awards for his expertise, with a list of celebrity

Keep up your grooming habits as showering and getting dressed daily can be challenging for some women during this time, but these little things can make a big difference in the way you feel. If you are in pain or coping with changes in body image, express it to a loved one instead of putting on a brave face and pretending everything is OK.

Ensure that you are part of a social group, whether that is a religious group, a breast cancer support group, or a professional therapy group. Studies have shown that being part of a group has many benefits, including faster physical recovery and improved quality of life. Regularly note down your thoughts and feelings associated with your process as this can positively impact your psychological state and immune system. On a daily basis, try and do a fun activity, whether that is watching your favorite TV program or having a chat with a friend. This will infuse some joy into your life and help you feel better. H

PEDIACYN ADVANCED ANTIPRURITIC HYODROGEL FOR ATOPIC DERMATITIS MANAGEMENT MAINTAINING BEAUTIFUL SKIN IS TODAY’S MAIN FOUNDATION OF BEAUTY. IT IS LIKELY THAT OUR SKIN MIGHT SUFFER FROM CERTAIN DISEASES AND PROBLEMS THAT MUST BE CURED TO KEEP IT HEALTHY AND PURE. proper treatment as otherwise, it is extremely difficult for the child to withstand the tendency of scratching the skin. The healing process is not impossible anymore with the new siliconebased Pediacyn Atopic Dermatitis Hydrogel that is formulated with the patented Microcyn technology, which has a significant advantage in the management of Atopic Dermatitis.

ONE OF MANY SKIN PROBLEMS IS ATOPIC DERMATITIS. IT IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMONLY SEEN DERMATOSES WITH A PREVALENCE OF TWO TO FIVE PERCENT IN YOUNG CHILDREN AND 10 PERCENT IN ADULTS. The symptoms of Atopic Dermatitis vary from one person to another, whereas itching is the most critical as it has a significant impact on the patient’s life and daily practices. Other symptoms include inflammation and dry, red skin. The term (Atopy) is used when the

patient suffers from chronic dermatitis, allergies, and asthma at the same time. Additionally, the need to scratch the itchy area is one important symptom that is proven in various studies and is called the “Itch-scratch cycle.” Most of the time, the patient is not aware that he or she is scratching the affected area because it is nearly impossible to resist this need, as continuous scratching opens the route for bacteria to settle inside the skin and cause inflammation. A child with Atopic Dermatitis can cause infection to the entire family; therefore, parents should notice the symptoms and look for the

Pediacyn is safe to use in all ages during the dry and wet phases of Atopic Dermatitis as it can be used for a long period of time without causing any side effects. It relieves itchy sensations and reduces inflammation, microbes, and redness. Pediacyn is safe to use around the eyes and mouth, as it is free of steroids, is nonirritating, non-toxic, and contains a neutral percentage of PH (Potential Hydrogen). It is important to note that Pediacyn works as a moisturizer while forming a protective barrier against physical, chemical, and microbial invasion of Atopic Dermatitis lesions. Some results reported that the itching sensation is reduced by 50 percent after using Pediacyn for the first time, and 85 percent after the third day of usage. H

Personal Fitness

“My main goal is to make sure that I do 40 to 45 minutes of sweat time daily. By this, I mean that I should be able to break a sweat and my heart rate should be high. I do various things like yoga, swimming, playing tennis, or squash, or running up and down the stairs when it’s raining in Mumbai. The goal is to be consistent and make sure that I do this six days a week.”

Tried and Tested Health Tips

“I think working out first thing in the morning is a good idea. By saying this, I don’t mean it has to be 5 or 6 AM; it can be before you head out for work. Secondly is the flexibility about where you exercise and how. For example, if you don’t get the time to go to the gym, you can climb up and down the staircase for 30 minutes and it’s as good as going to the gym. Remember, fitness is a journey, it’s not a destination. Fitness is not about losing weight to get that perfect figure for a wedding, it’s about a journey for a lifetime. Lastly, don’t start to take fitness seriously only when health related issues start cropping up.”

Keeping a Balance

“I think work-life balance is very important, especially in the type of lifestyle which we lead; I cut off from work every day at around 6:30 to 7 PM and after that I switch my data off and I don’t do anything work related. I feel that worklife balance is very important because without it, there will

be a tug of war between work and personal life."

Nurturing the Spirit

“I think meditation and yoga play a very important part in the overall well-being and

fitness of a person. Fitness is not about physical fitness; it is about having a balanced mind as well. I try and take out five minutes during the middle of the day for deep breathing because it centers me.” H

The Cancer Alarm in the Middle East The incidence of cancer in the Middle East region, including the UAE, is on the rise with the number of cases expected to double by 2030, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). It also estimates that nearly one million people in the region will suffer from the disease within the next three decades. But the good news is that with several types of cancers, early detection and proper treatment can be lifesaving.

In the UAE

The top five cancers in males in the UAE are leukemia, colorectal, prostate, NonHodgkins, and of the brain while in women, the top five cancers include leukemia, colorectal, thyroid, uterus, and of the breast. Just some of the reasons for the rising incidence of cancer in the region include unhealthy lifestyles, poor awareness of cancer, stigma related to cancer diagnosis, and a lack of early detection. However, the UAE is determined to bring down cancer fatalities by nearly 18 percent by 2021. Moreover, reducing the number of deaths due to cancer is one of the key performance indicators in the UAE National Agenda 2021.

Specialist Oncologist

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer amongst women and the incidence is rising. In fact, more than 20 percent of all female deaths in the UAE are caused by breast cancer. The median age at the diagnosis of breast cancer in the UAE is 10 to 15 years younger than in North America and Europe, with the majority of cancers diagnosed in the second stage and 30 percent cases diagnosed in the third stage. However, if detected in the early stage, the survival rate exceeds 90 percent which is why awareness, education, and screenings are paramount.

Early Detection and Screenings

Early detection is a key factor in treatment, especially with breast, cervix, and colorectal cancers which may be cured if detected early and treated adequately. Basically, screening tests detect a cancer early which is when treatment is likely to work best. In the case of breast cancer, mammograms are recommended annually or every two years for women 40 to 69 years of age and older. Cervical cancer screening should begin at age 21; however, in women between the ages of 21 to 29 screening should be done every 3 years along with Pap tests. Then from 30 to 65 years of age, screening should be done every 5 years with both the HPV test and the Pap test (preferred) or every 3 years with the Pap test alone. Also, colon cancer is detected for both sexes between the ages of 40 and 75 years through immunochemical testing of the stool every two years, or sigmoidoscopy every 5 years, or colonoscopy every 10 years. HOW TO CONTROL YOUR ASTHMA DURING SANDSTORMS ASTHMA AWARENESS IS CRUCIAL WHEN LIVING IN THE UAE, ESPECIALLY AS SEVERAL STUDIES REPORTED THAT SANDSTORMS FREQUENTLY CAUSE ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS ON RESPIRATORY FUNCTION. READ ON FOR TIPS ON HOW TO CONTROL YOUR ASTHMA DURING SANDSTORMS FOR A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE.

Fluids, especially water,

reports, especially during the sandstorm season.

Dust collection in air

conditioning vents can be a harmful trigger if not cleaned and checked regularly. Air conditioning units need to be regularly maintained and cleaned every six months to avoid accumulation of dust in

ducts and vents.

Stay indoors as

much as possible during sandstorms and keep windows and doors closed. Reduce exposure to common allergens during sandstorms that may provoke asthmatic attacks.

Air purifiers are by no

means a cure for asthma; however, they help to remove the allergens and particles which can trigger symptoms by directing air through a filter. H

How Much Do You Know about Breast Cancer? Sept/Oct 2018

30

Worldwide, breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer after lung cancer and the fifth most common cause of cancer death. While speedy diagnosis and better treatment have led to a fall in mortality rates, being breast aware is essential to enhance your chances of survival.

How to do a breast examination

From the age of 20, women should check their breasts monthly. Checking your breasts for lumps or other changes is called breast self-exam. Women should do it 5 to 10 days after the first day of their cycle, or those who have passed menopause should do it on the same day each month. There is no set way to check your breasts, but you should find time to do it on a regular basis and remain breast aware throughout your life, as well as undergoing a screening once you are eligible. Being breast aware means familiarizing yourself with your breasts and the changes they go through during your life. You should know how your breasts look and feel normally so that you can pick up any changes quickly. With a self-exam, it is important to feel all around your breasts, including underneath, at the top, around by the collar bone, and under your arms. If you do notice a change in your breasts, try not to worry, but see your GP as soon as you can. Breast cancer can present in many ways, but it is important to remember that many changes can also be caused by benign (non-cancerous) conditions or normal changes within the breast.

What You Should be Looking Out For

• Pain in part of the breast or armpit that is unrelated to periods • Lump in the breast or armpit • Lumpy area or unusual thickening of tissue that doesn’t go after your period • Size – if one breast becomes larger or lower than the other • Discharge from one or both nipples • Rash or crusting of the nipple or surrounding area • Skin texture – puckering or dimpling • Swelling under the armpit or around the collarbone H

KEEP YOUR PHONE SOMEWHERE OUT OF REACH: Keep it in a drawer, your purse, or the other room when not required. In fact, research has demonstrated that even a turned down cell phone can negatively affect the quality of the conversation because it splits your mind and attention.

DETOX TIME: Work on going for a day or even a few hours without the phone. Initially you might feel anxious or nervous, but chances are that you will feel liberated and actually have more productive time for yourself, your family, and even your work.

OUT-OF-OFFICE RESPONSE: Have designated times to check your emails; aim to check it only two or three times a day. Inform friends, family, and colleagues that you will respond only in those times. REGAIN CONTROL OVER YOUR TIME: Once you have set in place a few rules regarding timings with your smart phone screen time, you will find yourself with more time to explore new interests, indulge in self-care, and spend quality time with loved ones. FOUR HABITS THAT WILL HELP YOU LEAD A MORE PRODUCTIVE LIFE

Sept/Oct 2018

34

1

AIM TO WAKE UP EARLY EVERY DAY.

2

NOTE DOWN THE MAJOR TASKS YOU NEED TO DO THAT DAY EVERY MORNING.

Going to sleep at a prescheduled bedtime and waking up at more or less the same time daily will help you not only be more productive, but plan the day in an organized and constructive way.

Not only work related, but errands, bank tasks, meeting friends, and so on, can all be noted down in a systematic way.

3

REFLECT ON MISTAKES AND LEARN FROM THEM.

Instead of making a blunder a negative experience, use it as a stepping stone to learn from and move forward.

4

DO NOT PROCRASTINATE.

If something needs to get done, prioritize it and do it. The more you procrastinate, the worse it can get. H

How to Transform Negative Thoughts into Positive Ones

As optimistic as many of us believe we are, there may still be thoughts of negativity creeping up on us when we least expect it. Here are some simple ways to transform your negative mindset to a more positive one.

Sept/Oct 2018

36

Always Remember that Nothing Is Permanent Your work, health, and current situations are not permanent. Understanding this will help you change your thoughts from negative to positive in an instant. So the next time a wave of negative thoughts hits you, think ‘nothing is permanent’. The more you repeat it, the more you will believe it.

List as Many Positive Thoughts Down as You Can Write down only positive things about yourself as doing this will help you move from a negative mindset to a more positive one. The key here is to keep on writing, don’t stop, and do not let your mind wander. Once you feel a shift in your energy, you will begin to feel more upbeat. Surround Yourself with Positive People If your negative mindset is being fuelled by the people

at work or your social circle, now is the time to change this. The more negative people you surround yourself with, the more negative thoughts you will have. Stop Being Your Own Worst Enemy Most of us are battling our own selves when it comes to critical self-analysis. Change this by practicing visualization and repeating positive affirmations on a daily basis. H

What’s Blocking Your Happiness? Don’t you wonder why some people enjoy their lives no matter how challenging the difficulties are, while others cannot find peace no matter how hard they try? It could be due to a number of beliefs that are attributed to how unhappy a person may be with their life, as follows.

When you are caught up in the “I will be happy when”, happiness is always put off for the future, while truly the only time you can actually experience happiness is right here, right now.

Sept/Oct 2018

38

We might be naturally motivated to seek out things and people that bring us more intense forms of happiness. However, happiness is an inside job and doesn’t depend on anything but YOU. Many people believe that happiness is having fun at a party or the delight of a fine meal. These are all wonderful experiences to

be cherished and cultivated, but they are not happiness. They are only the definition of pleasure and chasing pleasure is not happiness. Money can only buy happiness if used to do things, not to have things. Remember, spending your money on experiences, especially with others, can produce lasting positive emotions that are meaningful.

Give yourself the permission to be human and to experience the full extent of human emotions. Do not fight negative emotions when they are appropriate and don’t tell yourself you shouldn’t be sad when something sad has happened. Learn to process, express positively, and accept all your emotions. H

Are You Making these Face Cleansing Mistakes? Sept/Oct 2018

44

Most of us cleanse our faces to get rid of the day’s grime and makeup. But did you know that you may be making some mistakes in the process and doing more harm than good? Read on to learn more.

Mistake: Using Makeup Wipes to Cleanse your Face

Many wipes are formulated with preservatives and alcohol to last long on the shelves. This means when you cleanse, you are adding unnecessary chemicals to your skin which, in the long run, can do more harm than good.

Mistake: Not Cleansing in the Morning

You may believe that face cleansing in the evening is all you need, but the fact is that

morning face cleansing is a must. Not only does it refresh your face, but gets rid of the products you applied the night before. It also removes the accumulation of germs from your pillowcases.

Mistake: Not Double Cleansing

A huge part of the Korean skincare regime— double cleansing with suitable organic facial oil before your foamy cleanser— is a must. Not only does this keep pores unclogged, but will ensure your face is completely clean and ready for the products you apply. H

DO YOU KNOW YOUR K-BEAUTY FROM YOUR J-BEAUTY? Snail mucin, fermented yeast, and sheet masks—most of us are familiar with Korean beauty (K-beauty.) But slowly edging its way into the beauty world is J-beauty from Japan, whose lesser known products are gaining momentum. HEALTH speaks with renowned K-beauty expert Jude Chao— whose blog ‘Fifty Shades of Snail’ makes her an expert on the subject. routines. Both K-beauty and J-beauty also strongly emphasize strong sun protection, and both Korean and Japanese brands offer a variety of cosmetically elegant and high-protection daily use sunscreens for the face. There are some minor differences of terminology. For example, in Korean beauty, hydrating toners are called ‘toner’ or ‘skin’ while in Japanese beauty, you’ll often find such a product referred to as ‘lotion.’”

THE DIFFERENCES BASIC CONCEPTS

“The general concepts of K-beauty and J-beauty are similar; both emphasize consistent and thorough makeup removal and cleansing (cleansing oils and the double cleansing routine are commonplace in both markets), hydrating skincare products, skin brightening and ‘whitening’ products, and layered, hydrating skincare Sept/Oct 2018

“I have found over the past few years that due to the Korean beauty industry’s substantially greater focus on overseas markets than the Japanese beauty industries, K-beauty products tend to be more trend-driven. A greater variety of new releases make their way into the consciousness of Western K-beauty fans. Mass market products are often

more accessible to Western consumers, labeled in English as well as Korean, and developed to stand out among a very crowded and competitive global market. There is a huge range of potential ‘steps,’ a near-infinite variety of star ingredients, and development of many different types of face masks and other occasional use products to supplement the daily routine.”

LABELING

“Until recently, it could be argued that the Japanese beauty industry was more insular and focused on the domestic market. English labeling seems to be much less common, and ingredients

innovations, marketing, and formulations are more conservative, less trend-driven. I think this is where the stereotype of Japanese skincare as more ‘simple’ and ‘elegant’ has come from—there appears to be a narrower range of featured ingredients and a less globally accessible aesthetic of packaging. Of course there are exceptions to both rules. The Korean government has put a lot of investment behind promoting and exporting K-beauty abroad, and that has driven many brands’ formulation and marketing decisions.”

East Asian beauty market is going to be perfectly smooth, firm, unblemished, fair, and even-toned skin that has a hydrated bounce and luminous glow. THE STORY I’ve been posting on Instagram for as long as I can remember, but consistently posting about makeup for less than two years now. It’s one of my favorite social media platforms and since Instagram is HUGE in this part of the world, I mainly focus on it. However, I do have a Facebook account and a YouTube channel where I make sure to interact with my audience and connect with them.

BUILDING AN AUDIENCE

“I speak to a lot of my followers, some even becoming great friends. I couldn’t be more grateful for this opportunity. As I kept building this audience along the way, this wonderful community of people also inspired me to work harder and try things out of my comfort zone.”

FAVORITE INSTAGRAMMER

“I am known to express very frequently about my love and inspiration from Huda (Kattan). To make it short, I wanted to see her for ages. After attending one of her makeup master classes, I was mesmerized. After I returned home, I decided to post it on Instagram. Later after a few videos—a viral one— and then with her and her family’s love and support, here I am.”

UPCOMING BEAUTY TRENDS

“We know glitter has made a comeback and there are some bold glitter looks that are super trending. Also, the black liner that was very in during 2008 is coming back too. The unfinished corners, the deep black streak, it’s now better than ever with monochrome colors. Deep crimson reds are also in along with the opposites— the watery nudes.”

TIPS FOR INFLUENCERS

others are doing; keep doing you, even if you doubt that anyone would like it. Next—be consistent, try to read and research as much as you can. If you start something, start small, that’s OK. But give it time, don’t lose hope. Research on what you need to create, what are the trends, and interesting aspects of what you like doing. Teach yourself while you grow. The more you do it with passion, the better the results will be. Don’t focus on ‘followers’, they will come eventually.” H

GETTING BACK INTO THE FITNESS GAME AFTER THE HOLIDAYS

If you’re just now getting back into a workout routine after a few weeks off for the holidays, don’t feel guilty and don’t worry. You will get that strength and fitness back. Compared to somebody who has never trained, your experience gives you a huge advantage that’ll make it easier to get back to form. HEALTH learns more.

Step One

Your first victory? You have set yourself to reintroduce exercise into your daily routine. If you’re having trouble with the mental side of getting back in the game after a workout break, remember the following: Don’t beat yourself up, evaluate your losses, be thankful for how far you’ve come, make a plan, and then execute that plan.

Sept/Oct 2018

52

Begin Slowly

Reintroduce working out gently, so you’re not completely discouraged. Start with a couple of gentle workouts a week (Pilates, barre, yoga, or strength training) and then slowly introduce the cardio element once you’ve overcome the mental barrier of getting back to working out. Find a buddy that you love training with or join a local running club for the extra motivation. Even better, sign up for the next 5k or 10k available to have a target to aim for. Incorporating both elements not only gives variety to your routine, but speeds up the process of getting fit. H

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR GYM WORKOUT All of us are looking for results from our gym workouts. Check out these workout maximizing tips.

Sept/Oct 2018

54

CHALLENGE YOURSELF

One of the key ways for anyone to train intelligently and stay on the fast track to change appearance and body composition is to ensure that the muscles are being consistently loaded and challenged during workouts.

CUT THE COMBOS

It’s quite common to see some people in the gym working on combination moves where the person is performing a lower body exercise with an upper body move, trying to work several muscle groups at the same time during the same workout. The problem with this is that if your goals are aesthetic based, the same weight needed to load and challenge the lower body cannot possibly be also used while performing the upper body exercise. A much better option with aesthetics in mind is to perform the exercises separately one after the other with different, appropriate weights.

KNOW YOUR FOOTING

If the training goal is aesthetic, you want to be able to load the muscle you are working and maximize your time in the gym. Performing exercises such as heavy lunges, deadlifts, and squats on unstable surfaces pose a greater risk for injury, so an easy swap is to stand on stable ground. You’ll be able to build more strength and burn more calories in the same amount of time just by having sure footing. H

Helping Build Self-Confidence in Your Children Parents play a key role in inculcating self-confidence in their children, which can later be the foundation to future achievements in their careers, relationships, and self-esteem, as HEALTH investigates.

Sept/Oct 2018

60

Teach SelfAcceptance

Learning to like yourself is one of the most valuable things you can do to build your child’s self-confidence. Avoid negative programming and use positive praise when teaching your children.

Empower Them

Provide children with a pre-selected set of choices which will help them feel empowered. This can be something as simple as choosing a pencil case for school or deciding a breakfast option. The skill of learning to make small decisions gives that ability to make larger decisions in adulthood.

Never Compare Your Children We often get into the habit of comparing our children with each other or with other children. Each child is unique and comes into this world with distinct qualities that set him/her apart. Teach your child to be proud of who they are and this will in turn, boost self-esteem.

Spend Alone Time with Your Child From watching a movie together to reading a book together, oneon-one time is imperative to make the child feel important and worthy. H

HELPING KIDS LOOK FORWARD TO THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL Many children have a hard time getting back into the school time routine after the summer holidays. Here’s how parents can help.

Sept/Oct 2018

62

Be sure you create a school bedtime routine at least one week before school actually starts. Kids should sleep, wake up, and eat at the same times they would as if they were in school.

Now is the best time to enforce time limits on gadgets and get your kids back into reading at night before bedtime.

Get the children involved in planning weekly school lunch menus with the recipes, snack ideas, and packing. Make it a habit to have the kids help you in this so they not only feel a sense of excitement, but it also helps ensure they will eat healthy lunches. Involve and engage your kids in every part of the pre-school process— from buying the uniforms to choosing their own lunchbox, water bottle, and school supplies. This prep work will help them look forward with excitement about the new school year. H

Simple Ways to Teach Children Right from Wrong

HEALTH LOOKS AT SOME EASY WAYS THAT PARENTS CAN INCULCATE THE CONCEPT OF RIGHT AND WRONG IN THEIR CHILDREN.

Sept/Oct 2018

64

• Set limits, but be careful not to impose too many rules. Before making a rule, ask yourself: Is it necessary? Does the rule protect a child’s health and safety? • Keep rules simple and understandable. • Involve children as much as possible in making family rules. • Help your child understand rules and what happens when they are broken. • Be flexible. Some rules may work when a child is young, but as children grow older, they need and want more independence. • Help your child develop selfcontrol. Young children do not have the self-control needed to follow all the rules all of the time. • Tell a child about behavior that is annoying to you or others. • Act quickly when a child misbehaves. • Be consistent. Agree with other family members on methods of discipline. • Praise a child for good behavior and accomplishments. H

Warning Signs Your Teen May be Suffering from Depression While teenage angst is to be expected, depression is something that is not. HEALTH presents the red flags of teenage depression that parents should look out for.

Sept/Oct 2018

68

 Some teens may show pervasive sadness by wearing black clothes, writing poetry with morbid themes, or having a preoccupation with music that has unhealthy themes.  Some teens may become apathetic and drop out of clubs, sports, and other activities they once enjoyed.  Persistent boredom, low energy, lack of motivation, and lowered energy level is reflected by missed classes or not going to school.  Depressed teens may avoid family gatherings and events. Teens that used to spend a lot of time with friends may now spend most of their time alone and without interests.  Increased irritability, anger, or hostility; depressed teens often take out most of their anger on their family. They may attack others by being critical, sarcastic, or abusive.  They may exhibit poor concentration, a major change in eating and/or sleeping patterns, or expressions of suicide or self-destructive behavior which are symptoms to look out for.  If a child or teen says, ‘I want to kill myself,’ or ‘I'm going to commit suicide,’ always take the statement seriously and seek evaluation from a child and adolescent psychiatrist or other mental health professional. COULD STEM CELLS HELP REPAIR YOUR CHILD’S HEART ONE DAY? BANKING YOUR NEWBORN BABY’S UMBILICAL CORD BLOOD STEM CELLS TODAY COULD PROVE TO BE A LIFE-SAVER FOR YOUR FAMILY IN THE FUTURE. HEALTH SPEAKS WITH SHAMSHAD AHMED, FOUNDER AND CEO OF SMART CELLS TO LEARN MORE.

Stem Cells and Heart Disease

Heart disease is the number one cause of death worldwide and here in the UAE, 30 percent of all deaths are from cardiovascular diseases. But help is at hand. In recent years, medical research has

Sept/Oct 2018

70

been focusing on the role of stem cells, with their renewal and repairing potential, as a way of helping to heal cardiac problems. A large number of clinical studies have been conducted, with many trials ongoing. So far, the results are very positive. The use of stem cell therapy to help

heal the heart has proven to be consistently safe and, while there is still a lot to understand, this therapeutic approach holds great potential to help beat heart disease.

Aiding Recovery from Heart Failure Despite more patients

surviving heart attacks, they are often left considerably weaker because the heart muscle is permanently damaged. Scientists are looking at how stem cells can aid recovery by helping to repair the heart after it has suffered from failure. After suffering a heart attack, the body releases its own stem

process by delivering a large number of the patient’s own stem cells, extracted from the blood, directly into the area that has been damaged.

Stem Cells Regenerate and Repair

Helping the heart regenerate itself after being damaged is

under further investigation since the discovery by Italian scientists in 2003 that the heart does actually produce its own stem cells. Building on this revelation, researchers are now looking at how these stem cells can be instructed to form new heart muscle to help the heart heal itself.

For Congenital Heart Disease cells into the bloodstream to help recovery. However, generally there are not enough to repair the damage. One UK clinical study at the British Heart Foundation Centre of Excellence, at the University of Edinburgh, is currently looking at the possibility of boosting this natural healing

Another area seriously being considered is the potential of stem cell therapy to treat congenital heart disease (CHD) – problems with the heart’s structure that are present at birth. The ultimate goal is to be able to diagnose CHD pre-birth and then once the baby is born, cord blood stem cells could be collected and a cell-engineered graft grown in the lab and then implanted in the infant’s heart. This new graft would then grow with the child and correct any abnormalities present. H

TEENAGERS COPING WITH STRESS TEENAGE YEARS ARE HARD ENOUGH, BUT ADD TO THIS AN INCREASE IN DIGITALIZATION, ACADEMIC PRESSURES, AND THE PRESSURE OF SOCIAL MEDIA—WHICH CAN BUMP UP THE STRESS QUOTIENT TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL. THEREFORE, HELPING TEENS DEVELOP HEALTHY COPING MECHANISMS TO DEAL WITH THIS IS CRUCIAL TO THEIR PSYCHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT.

For the past several years, the American Psychological Association (APA) has been releasing studies on the level of stress among teens and reports that the stress levels are increasing with poor coping mechanisms. The stress is complicated further by a teen’s inability to recognize that they are experiencing maladaptive levels of stress with school being the most common source of stress.

Sept/Oct 2018

72

The common signs of stress in teens: A change of behavior: Even though spending more time with friends is common amongst teens, avoiding parents completely can be a warning sign. Repeated episodes of physical illness and headaches are another sign that a teen is struggling with high levels of stress.

The teen’s interaction with friends, teachers, and other family members could be another indication; hence it is important for parents to watch for acting out behaviors. Finally, teens express their stress in sentences such as “I am not smart”, “I don’t have friends”, or “No one likes me,” parents should try to tune into the dialogue and help their child manage the stress.

Tips for parents and teens dealing with stress: Physical activity is the most the effective stress reduction strategy; taking your child for a walk or a swim can help him/ her feel better. Ensuring that your teen is getting nine hours of sleep. Schoolwork, activities, friends, and social media can be time consuming, thus not allowing the teen to get the rest they need. School work is important, but it is essential to make sure that your teen strikes a balance between schoolwork and other activities. Help your teen spend time doing things that they enjoy and have fun. Engaging in hobbies can help bring joy to your teen. Finally, try to always encourage your teen to talk to someone even if that person isn’t yourself. Give him/her permission to open up to a trusted person. DEALING WITH A ONE UPPER LOTS OF US HAVE HAD THAT ONE FRIEND WHO PORTRAYS HERSELF AS THE SMARTEST AND MOST SUCCESSFUL OF THE GROUP, OR EVEN AS THE ONE WHO IS SUFFERING THE MOST. HOW CAN WE STOP THIS PERSON FROM CONTINUOUSLY SABOTAGING A CONVERSATION? HEALTH SPEAKS TO AN EXPERT TO FIND OUT.

WHAT IT MEANS The term “one upping” refers to individuals who have the tendency to redirect conversations towards themselves where they may present themselves to be smarter, more accomplished, wiser, or sometimes even sadder, or sicker.

Sept/Oct 2018

74

PRACTICAL WAYS TO DEAL WITH A ONE UPPER It is essential to remember that “it is not what one says, yet how one says it,” that can make the difference in how well it is received by the individual who is one upping. Due to the sensitivity of this tendency, one can share with the “one upper,” how it makes them feel when they do this in conversations. The more factual data and specific experiences one can share with the “one upper” the better chances it will be received with an open mind. When the one upper shares something more over the top, the individual can gently redirect the conversation back towards them by continuing to share what they were initially sharing. If the habit is continuing, one may have to make the difficult decision of spending less time with the one upper, or choosing the types of interactions with this type of individual. This is mainly because

a healthy and lasting relationship entails a balanced give and take between two individuals. H

FLAT BELLY FOODS YOU NEED TO TRY Sometimes despite the exercise and care taken with our food intake, the tummy is one area that seems to be trickier to cope with. Here are four key foods to help you lose the bloat.

Fennel Seeds Long used in Asia as an aid in digestion, dried fennel seeds are loaded in fiber, magnesium, calcium, and iron. According to experts, fennel helps to relax the muscles in the gastrointestinal tract. This helps trapped gas pass to prevent bloating.

Dark Chocolate

With more than 60 percent cacao, dark chocolate is packed with antioxidants and can reduce inflammation. A recent study found that individuals who consumed dark chocolate regularly had a lower Body Mass Index (BMI) than those who did not.

Olive Oil

The monounsaturated fats in olive oil help stabilize blood sugar levels, which are critical in decreasing fat storage around the abs area. Moreover, used in moderation, it can help stave off hunger pangs.

Bananas

Loaded in potassium, experts say that potassium-rich foods help the tummy de-bloat because bananas work as a natural diuretic to rid the body of excess water and sodium. H

EATING RIGHT IN THE FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER

Sept/Oct 2018

78

With Breast Cancer Awareness month approaching very soon, HEALTH reveals some foods that are high in nutritional value and known for their cancer fighting properties.

Fiber

Studies continue to confirm the link between eating fiber and a reduction in breast cancer risk. Researchers have found that both soluble and insoluble fiber reduce the risk of breast cancer, especially for women consuming more than 30 grams a day. The reason is because insoluble fiber sticks to free estrogens in the gut and sweeps them out.

the primary phytochemicals that helps prevent cancer. Recent studies from the Linus Pauling Institute suggest that sulforaphane can selectively target and kill cancer cells while leaving normal cells healthy and unaffected. H

Omega-3s

Omega-3s are what’s known as essential fatty acids-essential because your body doesn’t produce them. You can only get these from foods like fish, seeds, nuts, and oils. Wellregarded research suggests that omega-3s enhance overall well-being and are particularly important for breast health. One reason may be because omega-3s reduce inflammation, a condition that damages healthy tissue and can encourage cells-including cancer cells-to grow.

Folate

A recent study found that women with the highest folate levels had a 44 percent lower risk of breast cancer than those with the lowest folate levels. To help protect yourself, you need to consume 1 to 2 servings of folate-rich foods a day. Lentils, beans, leafy greens, and fortified cereals are all good sources.

Cruciferous Vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables such as arugula, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, Bok Choy, and kale are rich in sulforaphane – one of

ORGANIZING YOUR FAMILY’S FOOD HABITS After the summer holidays, most of us are welcoming a new school year which also happens to be the ideal time to organize family eating habits. Here’s our guide to help.

BREAKFAST

A good night’s sleep followed by food in the morning helps your child to stay active and enables concentration at school. Good breakfast ideas include whole grain cereals with lowfat milk, a white cheese sandwich, healthy pancakes with fresh fruits, eggs, and vegetables.

LUNCH

Most of the time, the food your child chooses from the canteen might be high in cost and calories, but low in nutrients. An alternative is a packed lunch from home, which is a great way for your child to learn about healthy food and get him/her involved with the preparation. Some ideas include: • Whole grain sandwiches or pita bread with cheese, lean meat, turkey ham, hummus, and salad. • Frozen water bottle or tetra pack of milk, particularly in hot weather. • Light or white cheese slices, crackers with spread, and fresh or dried fruits. • Raw vegetables or fresh fruits. • Nuts including raw almonds, walnuts, or cashews. • Healthy club sandwiches.

EVENING SNACKS

Children of this age may have swings in appetite depending on activity levels, so allow them to choose how much they need to eat while offering a wide variety of healthy foods.

SNACK SUGGESTIONS

• • • • •

Cereal and fruit A bowl of soup and toast Dried nuts/fruits Light fruit yogurt Tuna, chicken, or cheese sandwich

BEVERAGES

• Sweet drinks such as sodas or fruit juice are not needed for a healthy diet and aren’t recommended. • Kids must drink plenty of water throughout the day. • A glass of milk, yogurt, or slice of cheese equals a serving of dairy group. Three servings are needed daily for calcium. H (Nathalie Djabrayan, Licensed Dietitian)

Starting from their extensive fresh salads, we tucked into kale and avocado salad served with a delicious sunflower dressing, accompanied by tapioca bread. We also enjoyed a fresh chickpeas salad with walnuts as well as a kohlrabi, turnips, and labneh salad. broccolini, salmon, prawn, or mushroom risotto. I opted for the salmon with mushroom rice which was in just the right portion size and tasted super healthy. From their range of homemade desserts, we opted to try several—the pistachio apricot tart with almond ice cream, cheesecake with pear compote, date cake with salted caramel, and a fresh fruit platter. Every single one of these was superb, extremely high on taste, and best of all, satisfied my sweet tooth without overdoing it.

Moving on, we noshed on starters including cruditĂŠs served with black chickpea hummus and sunflower tahini alongside healthy gyoza stuffed with lamb, kale, and spring onions. My personal favorite was a carrot emulsion and yoghurt tartine which merged a medley of textures and tastes. Soups here are all vegan and our broccoli soup was super

satisfying. Other favorite starters from the large assortment included a chicken sate platter with purple cabbage and tender baby kuttle fish served with puffed rice and sweet corn.

The Verdict: Intersect by Lexus is an indulgent space to linger, converse with family, and enjoy the endless fresh dishes while you listen to the live music. Take your family for a relaxed afternoon of fun and feasting. H

For the mains, you get to select one sharing-style entree from the menu. We had the option to choose from veal tenderloin, chicken breast with roasted Visit: www.intersectbylexus.ae Sept/Oct 2018

the

Space

Many of us living in the UAE are learning to maximize the space we have to create an aesthetically pleasing home. To lend her expertise, Carol Sukkar, co-owner of Home and Soul in Dubai, reveals key ways to create the ultimate home space.

• Choose furniture that fits your needs and how you like to use your home. For example, if you are a lounger, get a single L-shaped sofa with no other bulky furniture. Or if you are the type that likes to sit upright, there is no need for a big sofa, just one or two single seaters. • Adding mirrors will always give you a feeling of a bigger space, especially in smaller or dark rooms. • Combining the living room with the dining room is very functional— it’s nice to have guests over for dinner and have them in one room. • Choose beautiful shelves that you can use to display picture frames and decorations in a way that doesn’t take much space.

Key Trends to Look Out for • Rope, rattan, or beaded chandeliers suspended lower than usual, just a little over your head to make it look like your centerpiece. • Sofas with a wooden base to look like a set with your coffee table and dining table/chairs. • Wooden side tables are very trendy; they can be used next to the sofa, armchair, or even a bed. • Using different textures, materials, and colors, like mixing wood, brass, and glass are very trendy and can be matched easily with all furniture in the house. • Most importantly, choose a nice color for the main feature wall in the house to make it the focal point of your interior. Health Trends HEALTH BRINGS YOU TIPS ON HOW TO SAFEGUARD YOUR HEALTH AND GENERAL WELL-BEING.

SAFFRON

Indigenous to Greece before it became propagated throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, saffron is high in potassium which is critical for a healthy heart. Potassium helps blood pressure reduce by dilating the arteries and blood vessels. As a result, there is a marked reduction in the risk of stroke, heart attack, and atherosclerosis.

SWEET POTATO

An extremely versatile food that can be used in a multitude of ways, sweet potato is ideal for diabetics as it is naturally sweet-tasting. But these natural sweeteners are released slowly which enables a balanced source of energy to the body without the sugar spikes associated with weight gain and fatigue.

FRECKLES AND MOLES

I am a 45-year-old woman and have developed pigmentation and small freckles on my cheeks, despite the fact that I wear an SPF. What can I do to treat this safely? Dr. Sanjay Parashar, Consultant Plastic Surgeon responds, “The pigmentation can be due to sun exposure, skin irritation, and redness caused by substance abuse and/or hormonal changes. Pigmentation that is deep is often due to hormonal changes with age. Superficial pigmentation and freckles are due to solar radiation. Using sun block alone does not guarantee complete sun protection. You need to apply a good amount of sun block and repeat it every few hours depending upon your sun exposure. Both direct and indirect sunlight causes skin changes. An additional mechanical filter is important to minimize sun damage such as a scarf, hat, umbrella, or window screens. You need to meet with a dermatologist who will evaluate your skin and recommend treatment. The treatments involve the use of topical creams, mild peels, and sometimes laser treatment. A maintenance schedule is also important after any such treatment with a regular skin care program.”

MIGRAINES IN TEENAGERS

PROLONGED NOSE BLEED IN A CHILD

Dr. M Srinivas Mallya, DM Neurology, Specialist Neurology and HOD responds, “It is possible that this could be a migraine. Migraine headaches may affect one or both sides. They are associated with nausea/vomiting, sensitivity to light and/or sound. Other causes of headaches may need to be ruled out before a migraine is confirmed.”

Dr. Naveen Kumar N., ENT specialist responds, “Nasal bleeding is one of the commonest medical problems during the summer. This could be either due to the dry and hot weather outside or staying indoors in an air conditioned environment for a longer time. Either of them causes the nasal mucosa to dry and crack, followed by bleeding. But with the following simple home remedies and medications, it can be taken care of. Ensure the child drinks an adequate amount of water as water rejuvenates the tissues and prevents drying. You can try using isotonic saline nasal spray which is available over-the-counter and can be used multiple times. Saline keeps the nasal mucosa moist and prevents drying. If the bleeding persists, consult an ENT specialist. During a nosebleed, do not panic. Put the child’s head forward, pinch the soft part of the nose, and tell him to breathe through the mouth. The bleeding stops within 5 to 10 minutes.”

Question: My teenage daughter has been suffering from headaches daily. Could this be a migraine?

Question: My 7-year-old son has been having a nose bleed for the past two days; what can I do to help him?

THE START My inspiration came through the live streaming videos on YouTube. Since I felt live TV channels, streaming, and online videos were the new forms of technology and viewing habits, I thought this would be the best time to get my hands on it and give life to it.

FUTURE OF SOCIAL MEDIA The future of social media is looking bright and I am hoping to build up a strong presence amongst the digital audience by producing creative content consistently.

ADVICE There are a few tips for social media influencers which they should be aware of. Since there is a lot competition out there, it is important to do something unique and creative which means they should create the best content. Also, be consistent and always give your audience a reason to subscribe. KEEPING A BALANCE It can get pretty hard to manage at times. However, because of the strong support network around me, I’m able to achieve a good balance. Also, I feel when I talk about balance, not everything has to do with achieving the task, it also includes self-care to help rejuvenate. H

NEW RESEARCH AT NYUAD SUGGESTS THAT 3D PRINTERS PROVIDE AN EFFECTIVE AND LOW-COST TECHNIQUE FOR FABRICATING MICROFLUIDIC PROBES (MFPs) NYU Abu Dhabi Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Mohammad Qasaimeh, and NYU Abu Dhabi Global PhD Fellow in Engineering and first author of the research Ayoola T. Brimmo, along with other researchers, used a 3D printer to create a functional, integrated, and inexpensive microfluidic probe (MFP) to study cancer cells and other living organisms in a Petri dish. Their research, recently published in the Journal Scientific Reports – Nature, suggests that 3D printers can provide a sophisticated, less expensive MFP, which works just as effectively.

silicon, MFPs are very tiny scientific tools — roughly the size of a pen tip — and were invented about a decade ago and are continuously being developed and refined. They are used by scientists around the world to study, process, and manipulate live cell cultures in a controlled environment. “3D printers provide a simple, rapid, and lowcost technique for fabricating MFPs,” said Qasaimeh, whose team developed a framework to print MFPs and quadrupoles in 3D. “It’s cheaper to produce, easy to scale up, and fast to fabricate — all steps, from design to product, can be made in less than a day,” he explained.

DANAT AL EMARAT HOSPITAL FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN IN ABU DHABI MARKS WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK Danat Al Emarat Hospital for Women & Children in Abu Dhabi, part of United Eastern Medical Services group, organized a series of awareness activities on the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week starting from August 1, 2018. Educational activities included numerous seminars, educational talks, and different activities aiming to educate mothers on the importance of breastfeeding and to shed light on the health benefits of breastfeeding not only for newborns, but also mothers. Physicians at Danat Al Emarat praised UAE Labor Law which grants working mothers a period of 18 months post-delivery, two additional breaks each day for the purpose of breastfeeding. These breaks are not to exceed 30 minutes each. “With such rules, more new mothers are breastfeeding for longer periods,” Dr. Sadoon

Sadoon, Medical Director and Obstetrics & Gynecology Consultant said. “Recent international scientific studies confirmed that mother’s milk is considered an ideal nutritional source that is easily digested, as it includes vitamins, proteins, and fats, which are the main elements that newborns need in their early life. It also contains antibodies that enhance a child’s immunity against viral and bacterial infections. In line with these clinical indicators and the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi’s goal to create healthier communities, our team pays great attention to breastfeeding, and we have a dedicated clinic for breastfeeding managed by two International Board Certified Lactation Consultants. With an average of 350 monthly newborns, we believe our role in raising awareness on breastfeeding and healthy lifestyles is key.” Neima Mokrane, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant at

Danat Al Emarat Hospital said, “Our 2 seminars in Arabic and English were attended by over 70 women – some of which are currently pregnant and some who are breastfeeding. Our speakers focused on the benefits of breastfeeding such as strengthening a child’s immunity against different

diseases, especially gastrointestinal infections and asthma, and improving the baby’s intestinal function and digestive system. They explained how to ideally start with breastfeeding in order to prevent most complications.”
