FOREWORD

the conference which was organized by Wharton Business School in Pennsylvania University and QS, an international university-ranking organization.

I am writing to convey my very best wishes and sincere thanks to all of you as we shift our momentum into the new calendar year. The past 12 months have been marked by noteworthy achievement and change. As we reflect on the past year, I believe that we have many reasons to have enormous pride in our accomplishments and look forward with enthusiasm and optimism to the New Year – 2018. His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council, UAE and Ruler of Ajman, honored the achievements of 204 graduates at Gulf Medical University's 14th Convocation Ceremony held last month. I am delighted to inform our readers that Gulf Medical University has stepped into the 20th year of excellence in education, healthcare, and research last month. I am equally happy to inform that The Virtual Patient Learning (VPL), a problembased learning innovation in medical education, won the Gold Award in the Middle East region and Silver in the world in ‘e-Learning category’, at the 2017 Reimagine Education Conference & Awards in the USA, last month. VPL, a unique educational innovation, was selected from 80 shortlisted projects out of 1040 entries by academic institutions from across the world at

A high-profile delegation from the Republic of Ghana, led by H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana and H.E. Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the first lady of the Republic of Ghana, visited Gulf Medical University to discuss greater cooperation with the university and invited us to establish the campus and hospitals in Ghana. Later, they had an audience with His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman. The delegation also included senior government officials of Ghana as well as officials of the Consulate of Ghana, Dubai. I have signed an agreement with Dubai Charity Association, represented by Mr. Ahmed Mohamed Mismar, the Secretary General, to provide healthcare services to the employees of Dubai Charity Association and their dependents. This agreement will support economically weaker patients and also sponsor students to the medical university. I am happy to inform our readers that Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Vice President of the Healthcare Division and Board Member of the Thumbay Group, was awarded the ‘Leader Shaping the Future Award’ at the prestigious Stars of Business Leadership Awards 2017 held in Dubai. I am also happy that Nazeer Hussain Patayath, Director Finance & Budget, Thumbay Group, won the prestigious ‘MENA CFO of the Year’ award for the private sector, at the CFO Achievement Awards. Thumbay

Medical

and

Tourism Department organized the 4th Annual Health & Medical Tourism Conference. The conference brought together industry experts from healthcare, travel, medical tourism, and medical education sectors. Thumbay Hospital Day Care – University City Road, Sharjah organized a Mega Health Camp as part of Thumbay Group’s CSR program. Over 1000 people benefited from the camp. Thumbay Hospital – Fujairah organized a week-long diabetes awareness campaign to spread awareness on diabetes. Thumbay Hospital Ajman, launched a diabetes awareness campaign “Count Your Steps – To Beat Diabetes,” by organizing a walkathon in association with Ministry of Health, Ajman Police, and Ajman Municipality. Before I sign off, I wish to thank Amity University for conferring an Honorary Doctorate upon me, in view of my ‘significant contributions towards the promotion of medical education, trade and industry, and social and economic development of the nation’ according to an official statement by Amity University Dubai. I feel this recognition adds more responsibility and strengthens my resolve to contribute to the greater cause of education and healthcare in the region. While wishing all our readers, wellwishers, partners, and business associates a very Happy New Year 2018, I wish to thank you all for being part of our journey and also for helping to make the past year so memorable. I invite you to join me in anticipating what we will accomplish together in the years to come.

WORDS OF INSPIRATION

thumbaygroup thumbaytv

Great achievers are driven not so much by the pursuit of success, but by the fear of failure.

WORKING MOM GUILT

FEED YOUR FACE REVEALS HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS YEAR’S SHOPPING EXTRAVAGANZA

Hello!

Winter has officially arrived in the UAE and it is wonderful to be able to take the family outdoors to enjoy the beautiful parks and beaches at this time of year.

This issue is the first for 2018 and with it, we have a special guide to help clean up and clear out unwanted clutter from every aspect of your life to help you live your life to the fullest potential. We also have a feature on five healthy resolutions for families to get more active since optimal wellness is a goal not just for parents or children, but for the entire family. As the number of medical and wellness tourists coming to Dubai is increasing, I spoke with Dr. Layla Al Marzouqi, Director

of the Medical Tourism Council at The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) about the recent strategies and plans put in place to augment the number of health tourists coming to Dubai by the year 2020. Remember to be sure to mark your calendars for our upcoming Health Awards 2018 which will take place on February 26. It promises to showcase and recognize the top medical and wellness experts for excellence in their respected fields. In this issue, there is a focus on men too; in one feature, we look at some easy ways men can take care of their skin. Also, how men can spend more time with their families and be an active part of their childrens' lives. Of course, there are many more features that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Until next time, enjoy the beautiful weather and happy reading!

AUGMENTING THE HEALTH TOURISM EXPERIENCE IN DUBAI HEALTH SPEAKS TO DR. LAYLA AL MARZOUQI, DIRECTOR OF THE HEALTH TOURISM COUNCIL AT THE DUBAI HEALTH AUTHORITY (DHA) ABOUT RECENT STRATEGIES AND PLANS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF HEALTH TOURISTS COMING TO DUBAI BY THE YEAR 2020.

Jan/Feb 2018

14

THE HEALTH TOURIST The Health Tourism Council (HTC) focuses on promoting the development of health tourism in Dubai, and to position Dubai as a global health tourism destination. It also strives to improve the medical tourism ecosystem to enhance patient experience. We want to reach our target of half a million visitors by the year 2020, and at the same time, develop a seamless journey for them and we are getting there. From 2015 to 2016, there was a 9.5 percent growth in the number of medical tourists coming to Dubai to avail various medical services. We have recently named our project health tourism, to broaden the scope of our offerings to other health related tourism that includes preventive healthy screenings as well as wellness treatments such as detox, weight-loss packages, and anti-aging treatments.

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS At HTC, we have accomplished a lot in 2017 to establish Dubai’s position on the world map for medical tourism. That includes driving awareness in different markets through exhibitions, roadshows and other B2B campaigns. We have also developed health packages targeting specific destinations along with our DXH group members’ healthcare facilities. In addition, we have signed a number of MoU’s to develop strategic partnerships with private as well as government organizations such as The Health Bank with an aim to enhance the patient experience. Through DXH SmartCare, a product

developed by The Heath Bank which transcends far beyond a simple health tourism service, health tourists are now in contact with a single point seamlessly combining healthcare coordination, flight booking, visas, accommodation, airport transfers, leisure activities, and post-treatment support. And recently, DHA signed an MOU with the Ministry of Economy to further strengthen collaboration in health tourism.

THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO

We have a number of new initiatives that we plan to roll out in 2018 – including roadshows, exhibitions and other marketing events. We will be organizing the Dubai International Health Tourism Forum in February 2018 (www.dihtf.com). The forum is a dedicated to bring together prominent leaders and

pioneers from the public and private health and travel sectors, for exchange of knowledge and expertise in the field of healthcare and travel experience. We are in the process of launching an exclusive travel product that not only focuses on the health, but includes the tourism element. We also want to encourage more people to choose Dubai as a destination for a family vacation so that they can combine their recreational activities with wellness options.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media is a very important tool when we are promoting a destination and we are very focused on harnessing its immense potential to drive our strategy of making Dubai the leading destination for health and wellness to people from around the world. H

A Checklist for Letting Go Are you angry about an argument with a colleague, a spat with a neighbor, or a disagreement with a friend? Now is a good time to let go of the negativity and grudges and instead, learn to move forward. Here’s our checklist for letting go.

ACCORDING TO RESEARCHERS, THERE ARE THREE KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL APOLOGY:

regretting your actions, taking responsibility for them, and being willing to remedy the situation. Start by apologizing, then give indications to future behavior and offer some form of compensation.

LETTING GO OF A GRUDGE ACTUALLY HELPS YOU. That

means developing feelings of true empathy toward the person who hurt you, then focusing on the good parts of your life. WRITE A LETTER TO THE PERSON WHO HURT YOU, STATING YOUR INNER-MOST THOUGHTS, FEELINGS, AND PAIN. Then get rid of it. You will

feel better, even if your message never reaches the person.

KEEP A JOURNAL AND WRITE YOUR THOUGHTS. This is a great

ACCEPT WHATEVER HAPPENED, HAPPENED. Accepting what

happened allows you to move from the past to the present. By moving forward, you start creating a positive future.

way to help gain control over your emotional life. GIVE YOURSELF TIME. Because

you are trying to change your emotional habits, it may take time since these took years to develop.

LIST DOWN ALL OF THE GOOD THINGS ABOUT THE PERSON YOU ARE ANGRY WITH. This can help

diffuse some of the anger and hurt you are feeling internally. PARTICIPATE IN SOME FORM OF MEDITATION OR PRAYER DAILY. Not

only does this help bring a peace of mind, but can help lessen the anger, bitterness, and grudges you may be harboring towards a person. H

BELLY

FAT IN MID AGE

Jan/Feb 2018

18

Advances in skincare creams and treatments as well as a focus on lifestyle modification have kept many of us looking younger than we really are. The exception is the belly area which just doesn’t seem to budge no matter what. HEALTH reveals the top ways to get rid of visceral fat.

SELECT LOW GLYCEMIC, lean proteins, and healthy fats for your meals, advises David Zinczenko, author of “The Abs Diet”. Lowglycemic carbs include brown rice, quinoa, and sweet potatoes. Lean proteins include fish and chicken while some healthy fats are dark chocolate, avocados, and olive oil. CONSUME FEWER CALORIES THAN YOUR DAILY REQUIREMENT. According to experts, this is a cornerstone of weight loss that must be adhered to. Use a calorie calculator and make it a habit to understand the number of

calories you are consuming on a daily basis. REDUCE STRESS LEVELS AS THE STRESS HORMONE CORTISOL IS A MAJOR FACTOR IN FAT DEPOSITION. Cortisol is a catabolic hormone which means that it stores fat and breaks down muscle, the exact opposite of testosterone and is a key reason for abdominal weight gain. SKIP THE WHITE FOODS AS WHITE RICE, WHITE BREAD, WHITE PASTA, AND WHITE-FLOUR GOODIES CAN TRIGGER A SURGE IN BLOOD SUGAR VERY RAPIDLY. Instead, stick to lower glycemic treats such as brown rice or whole-grain pasta. PARTAKE IN REGULAR, DAILY EXERCISE. Anything from walking to jogging, make

it a point to engage in at least 30 minutes, three times a week, minimum. This will not only keep your overall wellness levels up, it will speed up your metabolism to help get rid of that belly fat. REPLACE SUGAR. People over 40 have to be especially careful as when your body takes in sugar, it releases insulin, which can ultimately lead to fat retention. Once you get past the initial cravings, the burning of fat stores will be triggered. TAKE SUPPLEMENTS THAT BOOST INSULIN FUNCTION, such as chromium, L-Carnitine, and soluble fiber which can help lower insulin levels since insulin promotes fat storage. NATURE’S WAY OF GETTING RID OF A COLD With the recent weather change in UAE, many of us will invariably suffer from cold or even flu-like symptoms which can leave us feeling miserable. HEALTH presents five natural remedies to alleviate your symptoms.

Jan/Feb 2018

20

Ginger

An easy way to soothe a sore throat, freshly grated ginger in a tea can clear congestion, decrease inflammation, and boost the immune system.

Raw Honey Packed with antiviral properties, raw honey also includes antibacterial properties that can help calm irritated throats. Simply add two tablespoons to boiled water with a few drops of lemon juice.

Bone Broth Apple Cider Bone broth is loaded with amino acids and minerals Vinegar that support immunity naturally. Sip this soup daily and be sure to cook it using fresh bones, fresh vegetables, and fresh herbs.

Cold viruses cause the acidity of your body to increase. If you feel a cold coming on, drink two to three tablespoons of apple cider vinegar daily to help lessen the acidity.

Fermented Foods

To boost your overall gut health and therefore, your immune system, experts suggest eating fermented foods. More than a way to deal with an on-going cold, it is also an excellent preventive measure to help you stave off future cold episodes. H Jan/Feb 2018

Is Your Stress Taking a Toll on Your Children? FROM FINANCIAL PROBLEMS TO WORK-RELATED PRESSURES, ALL ADULTS GRAPPLE WITH HIGH LEVELS OF STRESS AT SOME POINT IN THEIR LIVES. THE PROBLEM IS WHEN THIS ADULT-LEVEL STRESS SPILLS OVER TO YOUR CHILDREN WHO MAY NOT HAVE THE COPING MECHANISMS TO DEAL WITH IT. HEALTH PRESENTS A GUIDE TO HELP PARENTS WITH THEIR CHILDREN.

Jan/Feb 2018

22

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP HOW KIDS ADAPT TO STRESS

By emotionally distancing themselves from stressful situations, children often behave in ways to diminish the stress, such as crying when the parent leaves for the office. As children get older chronologically, they increasingly are able to use cognitive problem solving strategies to cope with negative stress. The main problem is when there is prolonged stress and the child continues to use coping skills which may result in permanent behavior patterns that can be harder to correct as the child grows older, especially if they perceive the strategy as an effective coping skill.

Parents need to be aware of their own stress levels and monitor these levels. In studies on coping in times of war or earthquakes, the children who coped best were the ones whose parents coped best. Make communication a norm in your home; just the fact the child knows they can discuss anything openly with a parent is a good stress reliever. Encourage close friendships with peers-kids who do not have close friendships are at risk for developing stress related problems. Unscheduled time should be allowed and encouraged to help a child unwind and relax. Coping strategies must be based on a child’s developmental level and understanding the nature of the stressful event. Prepare a child for an upcoming potentially stressful event. Discuss a haircut or first day of school. Increase the child’s understanding of the upcoming event and attempt to reduce its stressful impact- do not over prepare or over discuss as this can be potentially more stressful than the event itself.

TEACH KIDS RELAXATION TECHNIQUES such deep

breathing and counting backwards from ten. Try to listen to the child whatever the age and make time available to spend with the child. Don’t complain to your kids about the life they take part in, let them enjoy their life. H

REASONS WHY YOUR TEENAGER HAS ACNE

ONE OF THE MOST CHALLENGING TIMES IN A PERSON’S LIFE IS ADOLESCENCE WHEN THE ONSLAUGHT OF SURGING HORMONES, PEER PRESSURE, AND SELF-QUESTIONING ARE AT AN ALLTIME HIGH. UNFORTUNATELY, ACNE VULGARIS IS ALSO EXTREMELY COMMON AND APPROXIMATELY 90 PERCENT OF ALL ADOLESCENTS EXPERIENCE IT. HEALTH REVEALS THE MAIN CAUSES OF ACNE AND TREATMENTS THAT CAN HELP.

Jan/Feb 2018

24

HORMONAL SHIFTS Rising hormone levels during puberty are hugely, but not exclusively responsible for acne and acneic conditions. “The androgens (male hormones) in particular are believed to stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum,” explains anti-aging expert Dr. Maria Angelo-Khattar. Sebum eventually reaches the surface of the skin and mixed with dead skin cells, bacteria, and white blood cells, will form an acne lesion.

STRESS Stress can play a role in acne by over-stimulating the adrenal glands, causing overproduction of hormones. It is a vicious cycle that can leave the individual stressed and the stress in turn, can worsen the acne. Stress from a positive/ negative event may cause hormonal irregularities; in the ‘flight or fight’ stage, the adrenal cortex secretes male hormones causing the sebaceous glands to produce more oil.

GENES Certain individuals suffer from a genetic predisposition to this disfiguring condition simply because a parent or even a great grandfather may have had it.

DIET In a study published in the Journal of Archives of Dermatology, they noted the link between minimal consumption of processed foods with minimal or no acne in teens. In The Kitava Islanders in Papua New Guinea and The Ache of the Amazon, acne is almost unheard of and the only foods available are minimally processed.

TREATMENTS MILD ACNE Benzoyl peroxide is antibacterial and decreases sebum; side effects are excessive dryness. Salicylic acid helps unclog the pores and helps resolve the present lesions. Retinoids (Retin A) produce superficial peeling of the surface of the skin; it helps loosen the existing acne plugs under the skin.

MODERATE TO SEVERE ACNE Antibiotics: The management of severe acne might require the administration of topical or oral antibiotics. Combined topical creams with oral antibiotics such as tetracycline may help slow down the body’s production of bacteria that causes acne. Accutane: This medication is taken orally and used for severe nodular or cystic acne

with serious side effects. This acts on the oil gland directly by reducing the size and function of the gland, thereby curing the acne by correcting the basic defect. It MUST be prescribed by a dermatologist. H

Coping with Urinary Incontinence MORE THAN 40 PERCENT OF WOMEN IN THE UAE SUFFER FROM URINARY INCONTINENCE, AN EMBARRASSING CONDITION THAT CAUSES THE INVOLUNTARY LEAKAGE OF URINE. THE WORST PART IS MANY WOMEN AVOID SEEKING TREATMENT BECAUSE OF EMBARRASSMENT AND SHAME. HEALTH LEARNS MORE…

A HIDDEN DISORDER Dr. Zaki Almallah, a consultant urologist and physician explains that urinary incontinence is an issue in the UAE because many women suffer in silence. He elaborates, “It’s embarrassing for many women because wetting oneself continues to be a taboo subject. But the earlier women report the condition to their physicians, the easier the treatment will be and the success rate will be higher.” IMPACT ON LIFESTYLE Urinary incontinence can have

Jan/Feb 2018

26

a negative impact on a person’s lifestyle because of the social stigma attached to it, points out Dr. Almallah. “Not only can it affect social and personal relationships, it can also hinder physical activity, affect

a woman’s career, and socially isolate them as they are too worried to go out as they fear wetting themselves in public,” he tells.

TOP TIPS TO CONTROL URINARY INCONTINENCE • Limit caffeine consumption. • Avoid bladder irritants such as citrus juices, carbonated drinks, and spicy foods. • Train your bladder to hold more urine. • Maintain a healthy weight. • Strengthen your pelvic floor muscles by doing Kegel exercises at least three times a day. • Avoid artificial sweeteners that contain aspartame as they can also act as a diuretic. • Keep a bladder diary to help your doctor plan your treatment. • Follow your doctor’s treatment plan, which may include medication. DISPELLING THE MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT

PROSTATE CANCER

PROSTATE CANCER IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMONLY DIAGNOSED CANCERS IN MEN AND A 2015 REPORT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH IN ABU DHABI POINTS OUT THAT 20 PERCENT OF THE CANCERS DIAGNOSED ANNUALLY AMONG MALES IN THE UAE ARE PROSTATE CANCER. HEALTH LOOKS AT THE MISCONCEPTIONS SURROUNDING THE DISEASE.

THE SYMPTOMS Urology specialist Dr. Amr Ahmed Massoud explains that prostate cancer is the development of cancer in the male reproductive gland--the prostate gland--which produces the fluid in semen and controls urination. “The common symptoms of prostate cancer include trouble in urinating, difficulty in commencing and maintaining the stream of urination, blood in semen as well as the urine, and in advanced stages, pain in the bones,” he says, and it can occur due to age factors, family history, and even obesity in some cases.

Jan/Feb 2018

28

MISCONCEPTION 1: PROSTATE CANCER ONLY AFFECTS OLDER MEN. While it may be true that the likelihood of men being affected by prostate cancer is more in the older age, according to Sperling Prostate Center in New York, it is estimated that 1 out of 38 younger men (ages 40 to 59) will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 1 in 15 by age 69. Other factors such as genetics and family history play a crucial role in putting men at risk of developing prostate cancer.

MISCONCEPTION 2: A HIGH PSA LEVEL IS A SIGN OF PROSTATE CANCER AND A LOW PSA MEANS THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE PROSTATE CANCER. A high PSA (prostate specific antigen) level indicates that a person is at an increased risk of having prostate cancer. However, it should be noted that there are other factors which contribute to a high PSA level. High PSA levels can be caused by an enlarged prostate, a prostate infection (prostatitis), urinary tract infection, any recent prostate biopsy, recent bladder test (cystoscopy), vigorous physical exercise, or even riding a bicycle. Likewise, prostate cancer can develop in men who have a low PSA level, although the risk is lower in this group.

MISCONCEPTION 3: IF YOU DON’T EXHIBIT ANY SYMPTOMS, YOU DON’T HAVE PROSTATE CANCER. Many a times, the symptoms can be mistaken or attributed to something else. Therefore, it is important to be educated and informed about prostate cancer and importantly, regularly consult with a doctor. H

Why are You Tired All the Time? FIGURING OUT THE MOMENTS DURING THE DAY WHERE YOU SUFFER FROM FATIGUE CAN PROVIDE INSIGHT TO HELP YOU FURTHER MANAGE YOUR ENERGY EFFICIENTLY.

Jan/Feb 2018

30

Early morning: Groggy and unenergetic Reason: Lack of good quality sleep Solution: Our circadian cycle changes as we grow older and this ultimately can impact the duration and quality of sleep. Therefore, switch off of electronic gadgets at least two hours before your bedtime. Make it a routine, even on weekends, to sleep at the same time and aim for a minimum of eight hours of sleep. Mid-morning: Sluggish with dips in energy levels Reason: This is most often caused by high levels of stress and adrenal fatigue. Add to this, poor diet, lack of exercise, and not having a good night’s rest. Solution: Experts suggest a morning blood cortisol level or a 24-hour saliva test to help diagnose adrenal fatigue. Afternoon: Drained

Reason: Quite often a lack of exercise coupled with inadequate diet. Solution: Besides exercise, be sure to drink more water as though it doesn’t provide us energy, it is a vital nutrient that helps in the breakdown and transport of food to use up energy and helps to rid the body of toxins. Night: Exhausted Reason: Again diet is critical as experts suggest eliminating wherever possible, grains and dairy. Solution: Also, check your posture as when you slump, your brain gets the signal it’s rest time and you will automatically feel sluggish and tired. So sit up straight and stand straight. Tired All the Time: Check for the following: low thyroid, low hemoglobin levels, or other chronic diseases such as diabetes which may be the culprit. H

ARE YOU BECOMING A DOORMAT? Being too nice all the time can take a toll on your mental health. HEALTH finds out why…

TAKE OUR QUIZ: Do you always say yes? If

you find it unbearable to tell someone no, then you are too nice. Sometimes individuals feel like they don’t have the right to say no, especially if they are dealing with an authority figure.

Are you always the one making compromises?

Compromise is a good thing when it is done in the best interest of everyone involved. However, when you constantly compromise the things you want in favor of doing what another person wants, a lot of resentment will begin to grow.

Do you get stuck doing everything for everybody, all the time? Do you find yourself

taking care of responsibilities that no one else wants to do? This is another situation the “too nice” person finds themselves in.

Jan/Feb 2018

32

Do you find yourself in the position of ‘shrink’?

There is nothing wrong with offering a helping hand and being there for others, but if you allow everyone to unload their problems onto you for an extended period of time, it is going to take its toll.

Do you feel like you’re living someone else’s life?

If you feel like your life isn’t even yours anymore, then you have surpassed being too nice and become a doormat. People are using you and you are allowing them to.

Do you always look for the best in people? Do

you always try to find a good quality in even the worst person? This is a sure sign that you’re far too nice.

A Checklist for Finding Balance The cure to being ‘too nice’ is not neglecting others’ needs entirely, but rather, the key is a well-thought-out policy of temperance. Retain positive people-pleasing traits like friendliness and sensitivity, but clarify your own needs and assert them more. Learn over time how to come from a place of genuine selfdeserving.

Learn to accept and love yourself, as you are. Stop

making excuses and instead, work on self-validation all the time. H (Credit: Dr. Tara Wyne, clinical psychologist/clinical director in Dubai) Jan/Feb 2018

Clean Up and Clean Out Your Life WHAT WE EAT AND HOW WE THINK AND LIVE CAN IMPACT OUR WELLBEING IN A MULTITUDE OF WAYS. USE OUR GUIDE TO HELP CLEAN UP AND CLEAR OUT UNWANTED CLUTTER FROM EVERY ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE TO LEAVE YOU RENEWED AND RECHARGED.

Your Body CLEAN EATING LIFESTYLE

Now is the time to start eating as clean as possible for optimal health, which essentially means eating foods in their most natural state. According to personal trainer and co-author of the popular Clean Living book series Scott Gooding, food can either be our medicine to foster good health or it can be toxic. One of the simplest choices we can make on a daily basis is to optimize our health with what we choose to eat.

CLEAN EATING CHECKLIST

key trigger for inflammation in the body. Get rid of processed foods which are often loaded with additives and preservatives. Curb your intake of grains and instead, opt for buckwheat, spelt, and quinoa. Pay attention to the oil you use; try to buy high quality unrefined coconut oil and organic extra virgin olive oil. Stick to seasonal produce and whenever possible, purchase organic fruits and vegetables. Cook your food the right way. Instead of zapping the nutritional value of your vegetables from overcooking, lightly steam, bake, or sauté your food.

Your Mind CHALLENGE YOUR WAY OF THINKING

Sometimes we are our own worst enemy when it comes to making progress or moving forward in life. Life coach Yasemin Demirtas points out that the most common kind of self-negating mindset is when an individual is afraid of changing his/her current situation due to self-limiting beliefs. Some of these self-negating thoughts include “am I really good enough?” or “is it going to be really any better?”

Jan/Feb 2018

34

HOW TO GET RID OF A SELF-DEFEATING MINDSET

• Act from a place of what you want and not what you think you should do. • Stop procrastinating and do what you need to do in the order of importance. • Get rid of negative thoughts as they poison your mind and limit your scope for achievement. • Be authentic to yourself and your values.

Your Spirit BE GRATEFUL….FOR EVERYTHING

There are numerous health and wellness benefits linked to practicing gratitude. In fact, experts have found that those who regularly practice gratitude by taking time to really notice and reflect upon the things they’re thankful for actually experience more feelings of optimism, sleep better, and even have more robust immune systems.

THREE WAYS TO INCORPORATE GRATITUDE INTO YOUR LIFE TODAY 1 Make the effort not

to complain for 21 days about anything. Constant and chronic complaining about daily irritations can become a habit that is mentally and emotionally draining. In his book “A Complaint Free World: How to Stop Complaining and Enjoy the Life You Always Wanted”, Pastor Will Bowen affirmed that good things can happen for people in abundance if they gave-up complaining which can actually help transform health, relationships, and careers. 2 Remember to say thank you. Saying thank you comes easy with the boss,

but saying thank you to your kids, your friends, and family members can have a positive impact on your life. 3 Keep a Gratitude Journal. Research by UC Davis psychologist Robert Emmons, author of “Thanks! How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier” shows that just by routinely writing personal reflections on moments for which we’re thankful can boost wellbeing and life satisfaction. Your Home MINIMALISM IS THE NEW BUZZWORD

With Marie Kondo’s “The LifeChanging Magic Of Tidying Up” recently topping the New York Times bestseller list, decluttering your living space has taken on new meaning. A cluttered home is not just a matter of tidiness, but can distract you, weigh you down, and add an overall sense of disorganization into your life.

THREE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF TACKLING CLUTTER

Do each room, one at a time: If your rooms are too cluttered, start by making three piles: keep, not sure, and donate.

Start placing items in each pile accordingly. Everything from the ‘keep’ pile should be designated a place in the room. First organize, and then buy: Skip the temptation to buy lots of cool looking storage boxes before you sort through the clutter. Experts advise first clean out, figure out what containers you need, and where they are going to be placed or stored. Teach your kids: If you teach your kids where things go, and start teaching them the habit of putting things back in their proper place, you’ll go a long way to keeping your house uncluttered. Five Signs You are in the Wrong Job WHILE THERE MAY BE A NUMBER OF REASONS WHY DIFFERENT PEOPLE WANT TO SWITCH OR LEAVE THEIR CURRENT JOBS, THE KEY INDICATOR IS HOW YOU FEEL AT THE END OF THE DAY. IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING ISSUES AT THE END OF THE WORK DAY, CONSIDER SWITCHING JOBS…

If walking through your office simply annoys you for no reason, you are overdue for a change of setting. Feeling bitter may also be why every little thing seems overwhelming at work. If every insignificant thing becomes too big to deal with, you should consider a change.

It’s true that work can be taxing in so many ways, but it should never leave you mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausted all at the same time. If this is the case, and becomes a permanent feature of every single day at work, you should know that you are starting to suffer from job burnout.

If sleep issues become common, it may trace back to you being unhappy at work. This is because people who are unhappy with their jobs often find it harder to sleep well. H

You are constantly annoyed

2.

Boredom gets the better of you

Not being challenged enough at work is a sure-fire way to know that your skillset is not being used properly and you are simply not doing what you want to be doing. If you find yourself in this sticky situation, unstick yourself and find something that will not only challenge, but also motivate you to keep going.

You are exhausted all the time

You have trouble sleeping

You suffer from sudden health problems

While it is true that your mind guides you whether something is right or wrong for you, your body also does the same. If you start to feel physical changes such as body pain, weight gain, or anxiety attacks because of job-related stress, maybe you should think about changing the game.

THIS NEW YEAR, COMMIT TO BEING HEALTHIER BY GETTING RID OF YOUR BAD HABITS. HERE’S HOW…

Jan/Feb 2018

38

Always overeating?

Most of us are guilty of this, but not only can overeating trigger longterm health problems, but can make us gain unwanted kilos. Experts say that breaking up meals has a lot of benefits. Firstly, it makes your meals easier to digest since the meals are relatively smaller. It also helps to increase the rate of metabolism which is vital if you are working to lose body fat. This will also stabilize your sugar levels and curb your cravings for sugar.

Constantly stressed out?

Now is the time to learn to really listen to your inner self. According to Life Coach to the Stars Suzannah Galland, we should aim to spend half an hour or so everyday either meditating or relaxing. She suggests that we should not be afraid of silence. “Switch off mental and physical chatter so you can tune into your inner voice,” she says.

No time to exercise?

Stop making excuses for your inactivity and find something you actually enjoy. Bored with the same old gym routine? Try something different like yoga or Pilates. If you don’t have time to join a class, workout at home or make the effort to schedule a daily walk.

Eating the wrong foods?

Start including more super foods in your daily diet; blueberries, broccoli, spinach, walnuts, and yogurt not only taste good, but are essential to add to one’s diet to help protect against heart disease, cancer, help lower total cholesterol, and help regulate metabolism.

Can’t get off social media?

Whether its Whatsapp or Twitter, most of us are almost addicted to our smartphones. Experts advise the same rules you apply to your children and teenagers for social media, can be applied to adults; namely, limit on-screen time, don’t keep your phone next to you, set time-outs for social media, and keep weekends for family time, not social media.

Still smoking?

Whether it’s a weekend shisha with friends or an occasional cigarette, according to Thomas Glynn, PhD, director of cancer science and trends and international cancer control for the American Cancer Society, about half of all smokers who continue with their habit will die of a smoking-related disease. Quitting tobacco will boost your health– immediately and over the long term – in a multitude of ways.

THE ULTIMATE BUCKET LIST Life is short and most of us have a million things we want to do. Why wait, start today…

Jan/Feb 2018

40

1

Follow your dreams.

There are benefits one reaps from following his dreams. Financial rewards, self-fulfillment, and making the world a better place are just a few to mention.

2

Travel.

The world is full of beauty; nature is the greatest proof of this. There is so much to see around the world; you have not truly lived until you see and enjoy the wonders of creation.

3

Give back.

The world gives us so much; it only makes sense then that we give back so much more. We are not remembered for what we take, but for what we give.

4

Make your mark.

Kings left us their monuments, scholars left us their manuscripts, and artists left us their paintings and songs. You are here to make your mark, and not doing so, would rob the world of something good.

5

Pass on knowledge.

When you die, it must not be said a library burned to the ground. You are remembered not for the knowledge you acquired, but for the knowledge you shared. Each day you live is an opportunity

to learn something new, and by default, an opportunity to teach someone something new.

6

Improve yourself.

By bettering yourself, you are then able to better others, and by bettering others, you are then able to better the world. It is therefore necessary, for yourself and the world at large, to improve yourself.

7

Unleash your creativity.

You have the chance to create something new; a chance to make the world a lovelier place. Unleashing your creativity is the quickest way to unleashing beauty into the world.

8

Restore broken relationships.

Life is too short to hold onto grudges. It is better to carry mercy in your hands than bitterness in your heart. Before you die, make sure you have made an effort to heal any past wounds.

9

Do work you love.

You spend a significant portion of your life at work, so it only makes sense that you do work you love. When you do work you love, you do work you enjoy; and when you do work you enjoy, you produce work that shines. FRIEND OR FOE? SHE COULD BE A FRENEMY…

WHEN WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT AN ACHIEVEMENT OR LIFE IS GOING REALLY WELL FOR US, WE EXPECT THAT OUR FRIENDS WILL BE JUST AS HAPPY AS WE ARE. BUT IN THE CASE OF FRENEMIES, IT CAN BE JUST THE OPPOSITE. HEALTH REVEALS THE COMPLEXITIES OF THIS RELATIONSHIP DYNAMIC.

THE JEALOUS FRIEND Frenemy was first mentioned on an American television drama program and addresses those situations where someone smiles on our face, but eventually proves to have ulterior motives. According to Dave Crane, a life coach and life designer, a friend can become jealous because they experience something that they want in the other person and cannot get easily for themselves. “This could be an attractive partner, a physical object like a car or clothing, or even an experience like a holiday or a job,” he tells.

Jan/Feb 2018

44

DANGERS OF JEALOUSY Jealousy, reiterates Crane, can sit cooking in a relationship for years, creating resentment between family members, work colleagues, and buddies. “It’s normal to be able to position ourselves by comparison with those around us as it helps us have something to judge ourselves by,” he says, yet if left unchecked, those emotions can become very strong and resentment will be the most powerful side effect.

COPING WITH A JEALOUS FRIEND: Understand your friend’s feelings. Think about whether your friend would be more secure if she had what she envies, or if you suspect she’d still find something to be jealous about. Help your friend to be more secure. Compliment her for what she has going for her. Stand up to rude behavior. Just because your friend feels bad about her lack of education doesn’t mean she can call you a nerd for wanting to study. Demand an apology and if you don’t get one, it might be time to part ways. Expect all of your friends to support you through good times and bad times. Your friend might be jealous that you finally got that promotion and she did not, but if she doesn’t genuinely congratulate you, she’s not a good friend. H

FEED YOUR FACE Suddenly facial oils have taken the beauty world over by storm with every brand making some kind of oil. HEALTH speaks with Melanie Blane, founder of White Rabbit Skincare about this epic skincare trend.

Jan/Feb 2018

46

Aren’t oils bad for the skin? “There are literally hundreds of different carrier oils out there, offering a multitude of different nourishing benefits, such as helping to reduce wrinkles thanks to the natural antioxidants found in many oils, or deeply hydrating skin cells from using fatty acid-rich oils such as avocado oil.”

What to look for in facial oil? "As facial oils work deep down in skin cells to hydrate, your complexion will overall look more plumped, healthy, and the ideal smooth canvas for makeup.”

Can oils be used for cleansing? “Oils are lipophilic, they penetrate deep into the lower layers of the skin, keeping moisture in whilst keeping toxins, pollution and the like out; essentially protecting and fortifying our skin’s own natural barrier.”

Besides as a moisturizer, what are some other uses for facial oil? “Many oils, such as argan or jojoba, have anti-inflammatory properties, making them ideal for calming conditions such as rosacea or acne.”

Six Easy Ways Men Can Take Care of Their Skin WITH SOCIAL MEDIA TAKING OVER, AN INCREASING NUMBER OF MEN ARE PAYING MUCH MORE ATTENTION TO THEIR APPEARANCE. HEALTH REVEALS SOME EASY WAYS MEN CAN INCORPORATE SIMPLE STEPS INTO THEIR DAILY ROUTINE TO LOOK AND FEEL THEIR BEST.

1 2 3 4 5 6

MEN’S HEALTHY SKIN CARE TIPS The skin care products you choose will depend upon your skin type: If you have sensitive skin, use a mild, fragrance-free product to avoid irritation. If you have acne-prone skin, choose cleansers and moisturizers that specify non-comedogenic, as these won’t clog your pores. Be sure to wash your face daily and after exercise: Avoid using regular bar soap and instead, wash your face with a mild facial cleanser and lukewarm water. Keep a check on your shaving technique: If you often experience razor bumps, razor burns, or ingrown hairs, use a single- or double-blade razor instead and do not stretch your skin while shaving. Use a moisturizing shaving cream and shave in the direction of hair growth. Men also should get sufficient sleep and practice some form of stress relief: Sleep is very important because growth hormone, which is responsible for tissue repair and regeneration in adults, is released during deep sleep. Remember to moisturize: Moisturizer works by trapping water in your skin, which can help lessen the appearance of fine lines and make your skin look brighter. Always wear sunscreen: To help prevent sun damage that can ultimately lead to wrinkles, apply sunscreen to your face and your neck. For best protection, use a broad-spectrum, waterresistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply every two hours. (Credit: American Academy of Dermatology)

THE DIFFERENCE IN SKIN

• Men have thicker skin; in fact, it is 20 to 30 percent thicker than women’s skin. • Men have more sebaceous glands which means they naturally produce more oil. • Men have more and larger hair follicles. Especially on the face. • Compared to women, men’s skin ages better because it is naturally thicker. H

Is Your Style Aging You? YOU MAY HAVE GORGEOUS HAIR AND ON-TREND MAKEUP, BUT IF YOU DRESS THE WRONG WAY, YOU COULD BE ADDING YEARS TO YOUR OVERALL LOOK. HEALTH REVEALS THE TOP STYLE MISTAKES WOMEN MAKE AND HOW TO CORRECT THEM.

Jan/Feb 2018

50

Mistake #1: BUYING OVERLY STRETCHY JEANS Not only can these over accentuate imperfections on even the thinnest women, overly stretchy jeans rarely flatter anyone. Instead: Opt for slim cut or boot leg, preferably in a darker blue or navy. Mistake #2: WEARING TOO MUCH BLACK We all love black, but wearing too much of it can give us a severe, harsh look. When worn near the face, it can even accentuate lines and wrinkles. Instead: Break it down with color or stick to charcoal grey or taupe, which is more flattering to any skin tone. Mistake #3: OVERLY SENSIBLE SHOES Comfort aside, wearing heavy rubber soled shoes or shoes with a very wide toe box can give the impression that you borrowed your grandma’s shoes.

Mistake #4: STICKING TO TRENDS FROM THE PAST Whether it’s your favorite silk scarf from two decades ago or a two piece suit for the office, sticking to past trends without updating the look can make you look years older than you really are. Instead: Ditch the past fads and invest in classics such as crispy white shirt, a good quality long coat, and well-fitting dark colored pants. Mistake #5: WEARING TOO MUCH JEWELRY Heavy, flashy earrings, long necklaces, or clinking bangles not only look dated, but can give a gaudy look. Instead: Stick to one key good quality statement piece. Earrings work well in the form of simple diamond or pearl studs, while a short strand of good quality pearls works well for the office and evening. Even an understated, delicate gold chain can infuse elegance instantly. H

Instead: Look for classic ballerina flats in good quality or leather flats that give a polished, sophisticated, and younger look.

DEBUNKING COMMON RUNNING MYTHS

With the much cooler weather at this time of year, so many of us will be heading outdoors to jog or run for optimal fitness. Yet despite the vast health benefits running has to offer, there are some common myths behind running, as HEALTH investigates.

pains, give it a rest before you start again.

YOU HAVE TO STRETCH BEFORE A RUN Reality: Recent research has proven that not only does

stretching do little to prevent injuries; it may even lower the ability of your muscles to store and return energy, triggering a loss in running power. Instead, do dynamic drills including leg sweeps, lunges, heel kicks, and high knees before you run.

MORE DISTANCE IS BETTER Reality: This is not always true. Increasing your distance too fast can bring about injury as well as burnout and hormonal fluctuations. Set short-term goals for yourself and if you find yourself getting exhausted or struggling with aches and

TREADMILL RUNNING AND OUTDOOR RUNNING ARE THE SAME Reality: While treadmill running provides fitness and calorie-burning gains, the lack of wind resistance and the extra force provided by the machine makes it less taxing than running outside. It’s a good replacement when it’s too hot to run outside, but don’t consider it your only way of running. H Jan/Feb 2018

Five Healthy Resolutions for Families to Get More Active THIS YEAR, MAKE A FRESH START AS A FAMILY TO GET HEALTHIER WITH THESE EASY TIPS…

MAKE IT A REGULAR HABIT TO GET MORE ACTIVE

Exercising is important for preventing weight problems. Kids require around one hour a day and they need help achieving this at school and at home. Encourage your child to participate in school activities or join a school sports team. After school, check out the nearby sports teams or activity centers which make doing one hour of fitness fun for kids.

Jan/Feb 2018

56

JOIN IN AS A FAMILY

Exercise is more fun when everyone does it together. Integrate it into daily life, even small changes such as going for a walk in the evenings together or riding bikes as a family. Use weekends and holidays to take family trips to the pool or going on a nature hike.

REDUCING SCREEN TIME

Curbing the time kids spend in front of a screen, such as a computer, television, or video game consoles can be beneficial. Be sure to maintain limits, rules, and restrictions so it doesn’t spiral out of control.

EAT WELL AS A FAMILY

Ensure your family is eating regular, healthy, and properly portioned meals every day that are balanced in food groups. Avoid bringing home sodas, chips, candy, chocolates, and other convenience foods to keep temptation at bay. Instead, keep lots of healthy snacks such as fruit, nuts, and crudités.

BE A GOOD ROLE MODEL

Each member of the family needs to be on board with a healthy ‘get fit, get active’ attitude so the child doesn’t feel singled out. This will help make this healthy attitude a normal part of family life. H (Credit: Dr. Lee Hudson, consultant general pediatrician, and Niamh Landry, specialist pediatric dietitian at GOSH)

A Parent’s Worst Nightmare No parent is ready to accept that their child is pushing, shoving, or being mean to other children at school. Then quite often, being informed from the school of such a problem can be an embarrassing and almost unbelievable episode for parents. Here’s how to cope…

DO NOT DEFEND YOUR CHILD BLINDLY WITHOUT FIRST UNDERSTANDING AND BEING FULLY AWARE OF WHAT THE EXACT PROBLEM IS. This kind

of defensive behavior is not only detrimental for the child, but will make the situation even worse in the long run.

Jan/Feb 2018

62

IF YOU ARE CONFRONTED BY PARENTS OF OTHER CHILDREN AND/OR SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION,

the best solution is really listen with an open mind as the well-being of your child is at stake.

CHECK FOR BEHAVIOR BETWEEN MEMBERS OF YOUR FAMILY AS MODELING AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR CAN LEAD TO VIOLENCE by the child

against others at school and later in life.

ACCEPT THAT YOUR CHILD HAS DONE WRONG AND DEAL WITH IT. By denying

there is a problem, you will never find a solution. This type of attitude will not help your child and the bullying behavior can become worse if not checked and rectified immediately.

FULLY COOPERATE WITH THE SCHOOL to

help change your child’s aggressive behavior and increase your supervision of your child’s activities.

SPECIFY TO YOUR CHILD VERY CLEARLY THE CONSEQUENCES if

bullying continues.

IN ORDER TO HELP STOP THE BEHAVIOR,

teach and reward appropriate behavior. MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD UNDERSTANDS YOU WILL NOT TOLERATE BULLYING

and bullying others will have consequences at home. TEACH YOUR CHILD

to treat people who are different with respect and kindness. SET LIMITS by stopping

any show of aggression immediately.

MAKE REALISTIC GOALS

don't expect an immediate change. H

DRIVING PARENTS CRAZY… A CLOSER LOOK AT SIBLING RIVALRY ANYONE WITH MORE THAN ONE CHILD IS WELL AWARE OF THE BICKERING, ARGUING, AND FIGHTING THAT CAN GO ON BETWEEN SIBLINGS. HERE ARE SOME COPING MECHANISMS TO HELP…

FAMILY-TO-FAMILY

According to psychologist Devika Singh, the term sibling rivalry is subjective according to each individual family. “Some families are more sensitive to discord between siblings than others and may react very strongly to a situation involving rivalry,” she explains, while in other families, sibling rivalry is normalized where parents regard it as a part of growing up.

Jan/Feb 2018

64

RESPONSE

The family’s response to sibling rivalry, tells Singh, is a key factor in determining the long-term outcome of the relationships. It’s helpful for parents to understand that the roots of sibling rivalry stem from our basic human needs for approval, love, and attention. Personality traits can also influence the expression and severity of sibling rivalry. “It is important for parents to

try and identify each child’s unique personality and how this may be contributing to negative behaviors,” she says.

COPING SKILLS TO HELP PARENTS

Pay closer attention to the family dynamics; parents often need to reflect on their own conflict styles and conflict management skills when they are addressing rivalry amongst their children.

Plan and schedule time for each child to engage in an individual activity. Siblings need time away from each other in order to experience a healthy relationship. Be sure to give your children individual attention according to their interests. Communicate your expectations clearly as children shouldn’t always

be expected to know what is expected. Certain rules such as no shouting, pinching, or door slamming are allowed. Try to teach them conflict management through the use of therapeutic stories that involve other people or even animal stories to help them relate these stories to situations they find themselves in.

SIBLING RIVALRY GONE TOO FAR Basically, any event that is harmful, injurious, or offensive to an individual can be termed as abuse. Abuse of any kind can trigger depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other serious mental health issues which can have a long-term impact on the individual and their family lives in the present and future. Part Time Dad Demonstrate involvement by doing things the child enjoys and being completely tuned in to the child, irrespective of the length of time spent. Without this, a child may feel rejected and the foundation of the relationship may never completely develop. Children sometimes need to hear their father say ‘I love you’ to fully

appreciate what he does for them. Affection in the relationship helps to strengthen the parental bond and forms lifelong ties that shape the child’s future relationships. Quality is important; if it’s really focused on the children and for them is the highlight in their dayit does not need to be that long. Even five minutes

spent reading a story can be better than two hours spent being preoccupied. Being a dad is not just about funding education and buying gifts, but being an actively involved role model for your child. Remember, it’s not so much what you do with the kids, but how you do it-spend some fun time with the kids and show them you care.

Set aside one day on the weekend where it’s off limits for social media, work, and anyone except members of the family. Plan the day in advance and have the entire family get involved in the planning. Give family your complete undivided attention-be present in the moment and not an unconscious parent doing one thing, but thinking of another. Be there in body as well as in mind and spirit. H

According to a poll on Workingmother.com on working moms, 57 percent of respondents feel guilty every single day, and 31 percent feel guilty at least once a week. So where is this guilt coming from? Time management expert and journalist Laura Vanderkam believes it stems from the gap between the myth of the stay-at-home mom and reality. She explains, “There is such a strong cultural narrative that idealizes the stay-at-home mother, even though that ideal was far less common than most people assume.”

REASONS

The root of this guilt and women can be traced back to the traditional expectations of women. “This expectation from society gave rise to an ‘ideal’ which was that women stayed home and took care of the children and did not have any other ambitions. For the women who were ambitious and desired to seek fulfilment working outside of the home, there raised a conflict between the ideals and desires, thus giving birth to guilt,” tells Dr. Vivian Friedman, a clinical psychologist and professor at University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. “But just because a mother is home doesn’t mean they are really home with their child.”

• Learn to say no: Do not try to accomplish super human feats. Do as much as you can and try to give up what is not important. • Do not always be the giver: It is very important to check your own mental and physical health before you decide to keep going. Practice some form of stress relief; yoga, meditation, or prayer. • Enlist help: If you cannot take care of everything you have to accomplish, delegate work. H

TIPS TO WORKING WITHOUT GUILT

• Prioritize and pre-plan: When you have limited time at hand, make sure you have planned ahead and are able to make the most of it.

Preparing Your Child for the

New Baby Jan/Feb 2018

70

A NEW BABY CHANGES EVERYTHING FOR PARENTS, BUT THE IMPACT ON YOUR OTHER CHILDREN IS ALSO LIFE CHANGING AS CHILDREN IN HEALTHY, STABLE, AND SUPPORTIVE FAMILIES OFTEN HAVE A GREATER CHANCE OF DEVELOPING A STRONGER SIBLING BOND. HEALTH PRESENTS EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES TO HELP YOUR CHILD BE EMOTIONALLY AND MENTALLY PREPARED FOR THE NEW BABY.

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP Before the birth of the baby, communicate as often as you can clearly about the baby and make it an exciting time for the child. Read stories to your child that are about strong sibling bonds or elements of family bonds and discuss this afterwards, according to the age of the child. While shopping for the new baby, take along your child and have them help in order to make them feel like an active part of the process of getting ready for the new baby. Parents can help by providing individual time with each child and engaging the older sibling

to participate in family activities. Take into account that at some level, ill feelings may be normal as children need time to adjust to a new family environment. Be sure to consciously prepare your child before a new sibling is born and ensure that the child is aware that he/she is loved and is special. Allow the child to express himself/herself even if he/ she is angry or frustrated. Parents should help the child find healthy ways to express their frustration. Take into account the child’s age and school environment, as well as the developmental stage of the child. H

CONNECT BEFORE YOU CORRECT… ARE YOU A PARENT WHO’S WORRIED AND ANXIOUS ABOUT HOW TO TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO LISTEN, AND THINK YOU SHOULD PUT ALL YOUR ENERGY INTO CORRECTING THEIR BEHAVIORS? HEALTH INVESTIGATES MORE…

Jan/Feb 2018

74

The biggest problem in any relationship is communication, and to better communicate with your children, you need to ask yourself three major questions: I LOVE MY CHILDREN, BUT DO THEY REALLY FEEL LOVED? AM I LISTENING TO THEIR FEELINGS AND CONCERNS? IS MY WAY OF DISCIPLINING THEM A CONSTRUCTIVE ONE, A KIND OF DISCIPLINE THAT TEACHES THEM TO BE RESPONSIBLE? SPEAK LOVE The first type of communication that a parent must use to make their kids listen and to be effective in discipline is to keep their children’s “emotional tank” filled with love. Dr. Gary Chapman, in his book “The 5-Love Language”, says that “love is the foundation” for every relationship to be successful. And, for a person to feel loved, you must speak in his primary love language. HERE ARE THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES, ACCORDING TO DR. GARY CHAPMAN:

1

Physical touch: to your child,

nothing speaks more deeply than appropriate touch.

2

Words of affirmation: this

language uses words to affirm your child.

3

languages and learning to speak the primary language of your child affects his behavior. At the end, when a child feels loved, you have more chances of him listening to you and engaging in a positive behavior.

4

MAKING THE CONNECTION Connecting with our children can be as natural as it seems, but most of the time requires our effort and time, and working on strengthening our communication skills. It doesn’t mean that our children will become robots and do whatever we ask them for or expect them to do. But we will certainly have a better chance of them adopting our values and behaving in ways that we find acceptable. H

Quality time: this language is all about giving your child your undivided attention.

Gifts: for some children, what makes them feel most loved is to receive a gift.

5

Acts of service: for these

children, actions speak louder than words. Understanding the five love

Making our homes aesthetically pleasing, yet comfortable is something most of us aspire to achieve. Include these insider tips for making your home beautiful.

Jan/Feb 2018

76

Enhance space: Using mirrors in strategic points around the home is a great way to make your home appear more spacious.

Stylish lighting: The use of crystal chandeliers and various modern fixtures will help to brighten up the room. If you are hanging a chandelier above your dining table, make sure it is smaller than the surface of the table to give it a more visual appeal.

Accessories: You can mix and match accessories for a combination of an ethnic and modern look, thus creating a stylish and unique feel to your living room

Carpets for a personal style: Carpets render style and color to the home. They can be used in the living room to enhance the beauty of a sofa set, they are also a staple item in the bedroom to give a personal touch, and they can also be placed under the dining table. They are an instant way to add an individual touch to your home

Make it colorful: Just as important as the furniture is the color of paint you choose for the rooms. Use lighter colors if you are looking to enhance the feeling of space. In bedrooms, you can use darker shades to ensure better sleep patterns

Outdoor furniture: If you have a balcony or an outdoor seating area, include garden furniture and gazebos to create a peaceful environment where you can relax after a hard day’s work. It can be your own special place to get away from the hustle and bustle of life. H (Credit: Amit Yadav, Marketing Manager for 2XL Furniture & Home DÊcor) Jan/Feb 2018

A RETRO-INNOVATIVE DINING EXPERIENCE AT JODHPUR Taking retro-innovative Indian cuisine to whole other level, Jodhpur redefines Indian cuisine and offers a superlative modern dining experience. A buggy takes patrons to Jodhpur where executive chef Shashwat Shivam has curated a menu with Indian classic dishes, but played with cooking techniques and incorporated some European ingredients to innovate textures while maintaining the integrity of Indian flavors. seeds. Our amuse bouche was a beautiful Macaroon chaat—a contemporary take on Indian street food which when popped in the mouth, was an explosion of tangy, crunchy, and sweet flavors. Our first starter—Potato Wool white peas mash— was finely shredded potato balls with a spicy yogurt, drizzled with tamarind sauce, and served with a sliver of cucumber. This was also a medley of juxtaposing flavors,

cooled by the cucumber. Next, the Prawn Puri Wada--a jumbo prawn tossed in Indian spices and served with dehydrated milk foam and beetroot and wasabi sauce--was purely Indian flavors with deliciously understated Japanese elements. Finally, the Chicken Tikka Quesadillas fused Indian flavors in a Mexican dish, with a crispy tortilla, encased with chicken tikka and cheese-- served with paprika raita. Mocktails were served molecular gastronomy style: Strawberry sorbet, the Volcanic Lychee mojito, and my favorite Passion fruit mocktail with wood apple, lime, and peach.

spicy prawns with fragrant gravy. In the Faux Dal Makhani dish, Chef Shashwat replaced the black lentils with a healthier green moong version. This was Indian comfort food at its best, especially when paired with the flaky kulcha bread.

From the mains, Chicken 65 included spicy rasam gravy with a delicate tempering of curry leaves that lent South Indian flavors. The Jhinga Chettinad (Jumbo Prawns cooked with Chettinad Masala) was dry,

Desserts were served on one large tray: there were crisp fried jalebis with swirls of mascarpone cheese and condensed milk and also triangles of homemade five layer ice-cream. But amongst these superb sweets, the Lotus

Biscuit Trickle Tart—a salted caramel ice-cream with lotus biscuits, topped with butterscotch on a tart base—was out of this world. The Verdict: Jodhpur is that perfect place for a next level celebratory meal and Chef Shashwat takes personal pride in his culinary innovations, making this Indian fine dining at its best. PASTA WITH MARINARA SAUCE AND GRILLED VEGETABLES

DIETITIAN’S TIP

Try this recipe as an alternative to spaghetti and meatballs. With the homemade marinara sauce and chopped grilled vegetables, you cut the calories in half and reduce the fat by three-quarters. Serves 4

From pediatric questions to general medical queries, our panel of experts is here to answer your questions….

LASIK OVER 40

Question: I am a 46-year-old healthy woman; is LASIK still a good option for me? Dr. Tamar Salem, LASIK surgery specialist responds, “There is no formal age limit for LASIK. If your vision is correctable with glasses or contact lenses to 20/15 or 20/20 levels AND you don’t have even the early signs of a cataract, then LASIK is a reasonable option. If, however, you have an early cataract, even if the vision is still 20/20, I would encourage you to not have a laser vision procedure and instead, wait for cataract surgery. If you have LASIK before having cataract surgery, it is notorious for making our future cataract surgery calculations less precise and predictable. The other reason for choosing cataract surgery instead of LASIK is that with our new premium cataract surgery lenses (accommodating and multifocal lenses), we can restore your ability to focus in the distance, intermediate and near, without needing glasses. With LASIK, we can only give you one of those distances and you would need to wear glasses for the others (this only applies to older patients who have presbyopia.)”

HOODED EYES

EATING DISORDER

Dr. Armand Halabi, plastic surgery specialist responds, “As eyelids are the mirror of age, treating them is important at an early age. Surgery gives best results, but many patients are afraid or against surgical procedure to treat their hooded eyes so in this case, we offer a new and nonsurgical procedure using a revolutionary and patented innovation. It’s a non-surgical eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty using an innovated device without cutting or removing excess skin, muscles, or fat; which avoids all surgical risks. The device used in this procedure uses energy plasma to sublimate the excess skin and energy is delivered only in the superficial skin cells. Results are immediate with a reduction of the excess skin on the upper and lower eyelid’s skin, as well as the external region around the eyes.”

Aisling Prendergast, counseling psychologist responds, “It is important to note that it is not possible to diagnose an eating disorder from your question, however, it is certainly important to address your daughter’s behavior. You may have a multitude of questions in your head about this behavior, such as, ‘I don’t want to reinforce it’, ‘we shouldn’t make a big deal of it’, ‘it will pass’ or indeed ‘is this the start of anorexia’. I would suggest the first course of action is to promote a culture of honesty with your daughter. Try to investigate how she is feeling in an open and validating manner, and mention that you have noticed a shift in her eating habits and that you are concerned.”

Question: My husband has very hooded eyes which seem to be getting worse with age. Is there a minimally invasive option to help him?

Question: My pre-teen has been avoiding eating with us as a family for the past month; even the packed lunch she takes to school returns almost untouched. Are these signs she may be heading towards anorexia?

Try to promote healthy body image in the home with the following tips: Modelling healthy eating and exercise, talk about the benefits of physical activity to stay healthy and strong, not to lose weight. Show your teen that you accept your own body. Don’t complain about your own weight or refer to yourself as fat. Show acceptance for different body shapes and sizes. Do not comment on other’s weight or physical appearance. Teach your teen that the media is not real life. Avoid commenting on their weight or physical appearance. Build your teen’s self-esteem and self-respect by promoting value based behavior and commenting on their strengths.

24 HOUR PRIMARY HEALTHCARE CENTRES HELP REDUCE NUMBER OF NON-EMERGENCY VISITS AT TRAUMA CENTRE that Dubai’s Trauma and Emergency Centre at Rashid Hospital faces. “In mid-2013, we decided to provide 24-hour service and urgent care across two primary healthcare centres so that patients who needed urgent but not emergency care could visit primary healthcare centres rather than going to Rashid Hospital’s Emergency Centre which caters to emergency cases such as polytrauma, cardiac arrest, strokes etc. Over the years, patients have become well aware of our services and we have seen a steady increase in the number of patients visiting the 24-hour clinics."

The introduction of round-the-clock and urgent care across two primary healthcare centers at the DHA in mid-2013, has progressively helped in reducing the number of nonemergency cases that visit Rashid hospital’s Trauma Centre, said a top health official.

Dr. Alia Mohammed Rafie, Consultant family medicine and Head of Al Barsha Health Centre said that the introduction of the urgent care units at these two centres and the fact that they function 24 hours has directly helped in alleviating the pressure

The two primary healthcare centres are capable of effectively treating urgent cases and are equipped with multi-disciplinary specialists. Dr. Elham Al Nuaimi, Head of 24-hour service unit in Al Barsha Health Centre said the service is of vital importance to the community because it helps

provide better access to healthcare and geographical proximity and helps reduce the pressure that hospital emergency departments face due to non-emergency cases. She said the primary healthcare centres should be the first-pointof contact for patients except for emergencies. Dr. Ayesha Al Basti, Specialist Family Physician and Acting Head of Nad Al Hamar said PHC’s provides services including outpatient family medicine, child health services, antenatal care, dental services, some specialist clinics like ENT, ophthalmology, dermatology in addition to supportive services such as pharmacy, X-ray, and laboratory services. The PHCs also offer preventive screening packages at discounted rates including women’s health, men’s health, adolescent’s health, smoking cessation package, to name a few.

SHARJAH “BABY FRIENDLY OFFICE” AND “CHILDHOOD PROTECTION NETWORK” HELD WORKSHOP ON VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN the workshop examined the patterns of child abuse and how to prevent it, through a series of interactive discussion sessions and practical examples from real-life cases.

The Sharjah Baby Friendly Office (SBFO), in collaboration with Sharjah Childhood Protection Network (SCPN), hosted a training workshop in November, 2017 on the issue of violence against children. The session formed part of the office’s efforts to develop mechanisms that provide for the protection of young people and to explore ways to counter and eliminate the maltreatment of minors.

staff of childcare institutions and teachers and officials in the education sector. It aimed to examine the root causes of the phenomenon of child abuse and violence, including its nature, impact on children’s mental states and its effect on the entire community.

Held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Sharjah, the workshop targeted child protection experts,

Presented by Jordanian child protection expert Dr. Hani Jahshan,

Dr. Hessa Khalfan Al Ghazal, Executive Director of SBFO, said: “This workshop has been organized as part of a comprehensive strategic plan being implemented by the emirate of Sharjah to meet the requirements of the Child Friendly City (CFC) title – part of the UNICEF Child Friendly Cities Initiative that aims to make a direct positive impact on children in the cities where they live.” Aisha Abdullah Bin Ali, SCPN’s Director said, “We know today that some children are born in to environments where they are regularly exposed to violence, neglect, or some other form of abuse. The threat to children's

security and psychological health is not only restricted to their homes, but they can be exposed to violence or abuse in other places. We devised this workshop to come up with a set of strategic guidelines that serve as a roadmap for those concerned with child protection because children's safety is a national and humanitarian duty.” Essam Ali, Social Policy Specialist at UNICEF Gulf Area Office, said “The workshop’s timing was significant as it coincided with International Children's Day celebrated on November 20 of each year.” Praising Sharjah’s efforts in establishing a child friendly environment, Ali commended the crucial role both the SCPN and SBFO are playing to build the capacity of child protection professionals.

Speaking on the prevalence of diabetes, Dr. Abdulrazzaq Ali Al Madani, President of the Emirates Diabetes Society and the Chairman of the Gulf Group for Study of Diabetes, said: “While Type II diabetes, which is widespread, has a genetic predisposition, we cannot control this factor. What we can control are factors such as obesity, sedentary lifestyles and smoking, amongst others, to delay its onset and inculcate a culture of good health. I am thrilled to see the overwhelming response to this year’s Beat Diabetes Walk and applaud the Landmark Group in making this event a success.” Jan/Feb 2018
