Ghana and receive a medical degree MBChB from the University of Ghana. A similar program is introduced with the Medical University of Lublin, Poland. The students will enroll for pre-clinical phase at GMU and pursue their clinical phase at the University of Lublin to gain MD degree. Both the programs will start from September 2017. We are happy with the tremendous response for admissions for these two programs, apart from all the programs offered at GMU.

TASTE TEST

MERGING HEALTH AND BEAUTY… SOLE LOUNGE BY MARGARET DABBS

Hello!

Welcome to our summer edition of HEALTH magazine. I hope you all enjoyed your Eid break with loved ones after fasting in the holy month of Ramadan.

Many of us will be heading out to annual holidays and planning is the key to ensuring a fun-filled time. I met with Brazilian entrepreneur Eduardo Luce Glitz and his Brazilian designer wife Thaina Cabral Glitz, who really have made travel a way of life. They are ardent travellers who have taken their love of different cultures to the next level. They have provided tips and advice on making the most of your journey. Also, for those families who are not travelling this summer, now is the ideal time to get your kids into the pool. We have

a feature on children and swimming. With that, don’t forget the sun protection; we have a guide on protecting your skin and how to narrow down the best SPF products for your skin type.

www. healthmagazine.ae

healthmagae

I also met with Dr. Layla Mohamed Al Marzouqi, Director, The Medical Tourism Council, Dubai, UAE, to learn more about the Dubai government’s latest initiatives in promoting Dubai as a key medical tourism hub. Moreover, we have our usual lineup of recipes, profiles with key movers and shakers in the region, and our regular features which we hope you and your entire family will enjoy.

Publisher Thumbay Moideen Founder President, Thumbay Group

With that, the entire team at HEALTH magazine and I wish you and your families a wonderful summer break. Until we meet in September, happy reading!

LIVING WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS With 2.5 million known Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients world-wide, approximately 55 in every 100,000 people in UAE live with the condition. The ratio, however, is increasing. HEALTH speaks to Mahmood El Belushi, Certified Trainer and Life Coach living with MS, about how a positive outlook can boost wellbeing.

July/Aug 2017

16

DEFINED Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. The effect on the brain and/or spinal cord causes a wide range of potential symptoms, including issues with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation, and balance. In many cases, it’s possible to treat symptoms.

UNIQUE SYMPTOMS The symptoms of MS vary widely from person to person and can affect any part of the body. Depending on the type of MS, symptoms

can come and go in phases throughout the course of the condition. Some of the physical limitations include: fatigue, difficulty with walking, problems with blurred vision, problems with cognitive function including thinking, learning, planning, balance, coordination; problems controlling the bladder; numbness in the limbs and muscle stiffness, and spasms.

STAYING POSITIVE Keeping a positive outlook when dealing with any disorder is important, but it can be tough and isn’t possible all of the time. It’s just as important to acknowledge the difficulties of living with the disorder. So, it’s advised to try and find the right balance between having an optimistic outlook and allowing yourself to go through the negative emotions that naturally come with living with a disorder. In MS patients, there is a higher risk of developing depression due to the impact of the disease on the central nervous system. Focusing on the lifestyle choices that you can control goes a long way towards helping with this.

DAILY LIFESTYLE CHOICES THAT CAN LIMIT THE CHALLENGES OF LIVING WITH MS • The emotional state comes as the first step of recovery and to help avoid any relapses. Don’t feel too sad or too excited, because this might worsen your condition. • It’s important to recognize the impact that fatigue can have on day-to-day activities and to plan around this by prioritizing tasks, tackling important tasks when you are feeling at your most energetic, and being realistic about what can be achieved in one day. • Being healthy and fit can have a positive impact on how you feel, improving your energy levels, and mood. • Eating fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as lean protein in combination with staying active in some sort of way, will keep your body healthy while boosting flexibility and balance. • Exercising your brain is equally as important as exercising your body. Keep your mind busy to keep your cognitive function at its best and stay social. • Get enough sleep by practicing a consistent and relaxing bedtime routine. H

MEDICAL TOURISM INSIGHTS HEALTH meets with Dr. Layla Mohamed Al Marzouqi, Director, The Medical Tourism Council, Dubai, UAE, to learn more about the Dubai government’s latest initiatives in promoting Dubai as a key medical tourism hub.

MEDICAL TOURISM PLANS “We have a long-term target we want to reach by 2020 where we obtain half a million medical tourists coming to Dubai for treatment from

July/Aug 2017

18

abroad. We want to be number one in the region and in the top 16 countries worldwide. Therefore, our target has not changed this year, but the methodology to reach this target has changed because we started in 2014 by launching our brand ‘The Dubai Health Experience’ (DXH). Then we launched our website, and then after that, the mobile app. Then with all of this, the government started to promote Dubai as a medical tourism destination; all in 2014.” “We have done this to achieve our target for 2020. But before doing anything you should

have an identity; so you need a brand, then a website, and then a mobile app so people can go and search for us if they need any information. Then after the branding, we began marketing. We started with media and social media as well. Then this year, we concentrated mostly on road shows. In previous years, we had concentrated mostly on attending exhibits, participating in conferences, and talking about the experience of Dubai. But this year, we are concentrating on road shows which we have done in Nigeria, Ghana, China, and then also the GCC as this is our target market. We are really trying to market Dubai as a destination for medical and health tourism worldwide.”

KEY AREAS “The UAE hospitals and medical facilities are becoming more medical tourism oriented and we have more evidence here, in Thumbay Hospital, Dubai with the special Marhaba Lounge for medical tourists, special regional food menus, and even interpreters who are in place if required. The Dubai experience is a brand name--the ‘Dubai Health Experience.’ It’s not only the wellness and medical health packages, but also an entire holistic approach. All of the aspects of medical tourism are important; this year in particular, we are concentrating on the wellness and antiaging aspect of medical tourism.”

MOVING FORWARD “We have one target and we are aiming to achieve that. We want to put Dubai in front of everyone’s eyes as a destination for health and medical tourism. The Marhaba Lounge at Thumbay Hospital, Dubai will serve our vision in helping attract more and more medical tourists to Dubai. I think your services here will have a big demand in the near future…” H

TAKING QUALITY ASSURANCE TO HIGHER LEVELS… MEET

PROFESSOR DR. NADIA BADRAWI

An expert in Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education, a board member of the global Pediatrics consortium, Prof. Dr. Nadia Badrawi is also the President of the Arab Network for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ANQAHE), Egypt and an esteemed Board Member of Gulf Medical University’s (GMU) Board of Governors. She tells HEALTH about her unwavering efforts in quality assurance at all levels and her role at GMU.

THE START OF THE ARAB NETWORK FOR QUALITY ASSURANCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION (ANQAHE) “It began in 2004 when there were only 4 countries in the Arab region doing quality assurance in education. These were: Egypt, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan. Subsequently, the four of us heading quality assurance at that time decided that we would network to help support each other and help other countries begin their own quality assurance agencies. We began working on this in 2004, and in 2007; we founded the first Arab Network for Quality

Assurance. Now after founding this network, we are total 18 countries in the Arab region connected in quality assurance in the process of higher education.”

MEDICAL EDUCATION

“Quite some time back, most medical schools globally followed the British curriculum. But with time, medical schools shifted to integrated education. For example, Gulf Medical University (GMU), which when they began in 1998, was a disciplined based university. In 2008, they began to go into integrative education, which is now becoming the trend in medical education. Today there are also medical professionals who are also medical educators as is the case with Prof. Dr. Hamdy Hossam who is in fact, one of the first medical educators in the region and has an international name in medical education.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY ASSURANCE IN MEDICAL EDUCATION “Quality assurance in medical education is very important. In order for people to live healthy lives, we need to produce doctors that will be responsible for the health of the population. We have to take responsibility for producing doctors that are professional and competent. Overall, medical education is one of

the most important types of education and is education for life”.

GULF MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

“With GMU, the curve is rising; in strategic plans, in ideas, and in the research and studies being conducted here. There is a definite print of medical education, medical educators, researchers, entrepreneurs, and excellent mix of talents. The bond will translate the vision of the President of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Thumbay Moideen, into strategic action and direction. He has created a state-of-the-art medical university. The presence of Prof. Hossam Hamdy as the new Chancellor will take the university forward to a much high status an international reputation.” “The mission of GMU is challenging: to strengthen and promote excellence in medical education, biomedical research, and patient care and the vision is to be a leading contributor to the continuous improvement of the nation's healthcare delivery system through the pursuit of excellence in medical education, biomedical research, and healthcare services. The amount of investment in this university is huge and demonstrates that the owners are investing in building the minds of the youth in the country and caring for the health of the population.” H July/Aug 2017

We can also produce custom made orthotics to alleviate pain in the feet, stop growth of

It is far better to use a Margaret Dabbs expertly formulated foot product, which is formulated to be results driven and is absorbed fully.”

Debunking the Foot Care Myths

“If you need to apply socks after cream it means the cream is quite thick and the majority of the cream will remain FACT:

MYTH: Using a foot loofah on my heel in the shower will help remove the dead skin and make my soles smooth. FACT: “Skin should be filed when the foot is completely dry. When feet are wet, the texture of the skin changes, so that water masks the skin that needs to be removed. The skin becomes rubbery, tissues weaken, and cracks are more likely to open as a result. Therefore, filing on wet skin is not recommended at all.” MYTH: Soaking your feet regularly will help soften and alleviate corns.

“Soaking feet are ineffective for corns in any respect. Corns are a condition which need proper treatement by a fully trained podiatrist, with effective removal. You should also be looking at removing the cause – which will be a result of ill-fitting footwear and tissues which are being compressed.” FACT:

MYTH: All salons use sterilized equipment. FACT: “Here at Margaret Dabbs, all of our tools are sterilized, but not all places will do that. Just because tools come out of a packet does not mean they have been in the sterilizer.” H

INFUSE AND INVIGORATE

A new vitamin infusion that can be administered intravenously promises to take away your stress and fatigue; heal, and add that extra spring in your step. This multivitamin infusion works by replenishing all of the essential vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and amino acids to help the body function. A clinic in Dubai exclusively offers 11 varieties of Vita Drip Infusions based on the specific energy boost that you may need. These intravenous infusions have a variety of benefits such as detox, anti-aging, anti-oxidant, hydration, and provides immunity boost, and can even help control hyperpigmentation and dark circles too. Their most popular is the Adrenalin Fatigue Vita Drip, which is best to minimize pre-menopause and menopause symptoms.

GET AN OXYGEN SHOT

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has recently been added to the list of wellness therapies in the UAE. Oxygen is a rejuvenating elixir that can help kick in healing, tissue rejuvenation, better blood circulation, and strengthening of the immune system at a very fast rate. Dr. Ekta Anandani, Chief Physician at an HBOT chamber explains, “In this treatment, the individual is placed

in the chamber where pressurised oxygen is pumped. The pressure is equivalent to a 10 meter underwater dive. Each session lasts from 1 hour and 20 minutes to 1 hour and 50 minutes, depending on the time the patient requires. Usually 3 to 4 sessions are required to heal a patient.”

4

The increased flow of oxygen is especially very beneficial to diabetic patients who suffer from poor circulation in the lower limbs and accelerates wound healing, as well as the repair of damaged tendons during sports injury.

3

LLT is very effective in treating acute pain injuries such as a sports injury, tissue damage, or tendon repair as well as in chronic

Panchkarma is a powerful detoxification program that follows five cleansing steps based on the ancient Indian health system of Ayurveda. Asha Jones, Senior Ayurveda Practitioner explains the process. “As per Ayurveda, our body is governed by three elements or doshas – Vata (air), Pitta (fire), and Kapha ( water) and also, the wrong lifestyle and diets throw these out of balance, causing fatigue and sickness.” Jones recommends Panchkarma which involves Vamana (elimination of toxins through regurgitation with herbs), virechana (purging the body with herbal bowel cleanse), vasti (a colon cleanse with medicated enemas), nasya (cleanse of the respiratory passage with medicated oils), and rakthamokthasana (letting out of toxic blood, which is not practiced in the UAE).

LASER BEAMS TO THE RESCUE

One of the most path breaking healing treatments for acute and chronic pain management and quick cure of injury is the use of extremely Low Level of Laser therapy (LLT) where laser beams are directed at the affected area. Dr. Nassim Ashraf, Special Complementary Therapist explains, “LLT is mild and causes a very slight energy change at an injury site. It stimulates the body’s own immune system to direct more new anti-bodies and new cells to the area. This is a sort of bio-stimulation which helps in clearing the injured tissue debris, directing more blood flow, and new cells for regeneration. This is more effective than using pain blockers.”

DETOX THE AYURVEDA WAY

5

injuries such as joint or muscle pain, neck strain, or muscle pull.

ENERGIZE THE ORIENTAL WAY

Dr. Zeng Jing, Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner recommends ‘Cupping’ and Acupuncture for restoring the balance of the Yin and Yang in the body and to correct the flow of Qi or positive energy in the body. Dr. Jing tells, “In Traditional Chinese Medicine, toxins are also known as ‘six evils’ wind; cold; heat; dryness; dampness; and summer heat. The central principle of ancient Traditional

Chinese Medicine is to diagnose and identify the toxin and restore the balance of the human body using the relevant therapy to open the energy channels.” Dr. Jing uses: Cupping: Special cups are locked on certain points of the body using the vacuum technique, resulting in improved circulation and deep tissue massage. Acupuncture: Very fine needles are inserted at specific points, depending on the patient’s complaint. In a typical session lasting 30 minutes, 10 to 20 needles are inserted to unblock energy channels. H

DIABETICS TAKING CARE OF THEIR FEET For a non-diabetic, we often don’t give much thought to how we care for our feet. Yet for a diabetic, even trimming the toenails can be challenging. HEALTH speaks to Chief Podiatrist Michelle Champlin about some common foot problems in diabetics and the correct ways to deal with them.

July/Aug 2017

26

WHAT TO CHECK FOR It is very important for diabetics to check their feet daily for any callouses, hard skin, redness, bruising, cuts, or abrasion, explains Champlin. “With lowered sensation to the feet, it is common to not know there is a problem with the skin. It is only upon visual inspection that can a problem be seen,” she says, and in fact, a biannual assessment of the foot health with a podiatrist is recommended.

feet become starved of a good supply of blood. Moreover, it can also change the pH balance of the skin which can encourage fungal growth on the feet.

PRECAUTIONS

She suggests the best way to avoid problems with the feet is by regulating the blood-glucose levels. This in turn, will reduce the problems with the nerves and circulation to the feet. “By visiting a podiatrist and having a routine foot circulation and sensory test, any potential problem can be detected and treated to enable optimal health of the feet in a relatively short amount of time,” she explains.

SELF-CHECK

Champlin advises a daily inspection of the feet and if there are some areas of the feet that are difficult to see, check with a family member to help you. Also, take great care with shoes. “Accommodative footwear that does not squeeze the foot is advised - preferably laced shoes that can be loosened and tightened, depending on any foot swelling,” she says, and also, good quality socks are available for diabetics made of cotton, wool, and even bamboo fibers that allow the feet to breathe.

RED FLAGS

MORE COMMON

According to Champlin, diabetic foot problems are common. She tells, “If the blood glucose levels are elevated, it will reduce the sensitivity to the feet. Elevated blood glucose can also cause stiffening of the small blood vessels to the feet.” So when the feet demand more blood supply, the vessels cannot cope and the

A diabetic that has elevated blood glucose for too long will not notice the first symptoms; which is numbness to the toes. By the time the diabetic can feel a sensory deficit, Champlin points out that the problems are normally quite progressed. “Having a diabetic sensory and circulatory test with the podiatrist every six months will pick up any issues that have started without being noticeable to the patient,” she tells. “Also, hot feet especially at night time when sleeping, should be a red flag and changes in moisture such as dryness, should warrant a visit to the podiatrist.” H

TIPS TO HELP CARE FOR YOUR FEET Optimal care begins at home; take a daily walk of 45 minutes to keep the body healthy. Undergo routine checks with a diabetic specialist to ensure the balance of the diabetes is within normal ranges. Undergo an annual/bi-annual visit for eye and foot examination with an ophthalmologist and podiatrist. Invest in comfortable shoes and socks. Do a daily visual inspection of the feet, paying attention to the toenails, under the foot, and the outside border.

With Instagram filters and photo shopping images seemingly the way forward, the self-esteem of even the most self-confident teenager can take a beating. HEALTH discusses body image in teens with Counselling Psychologist Reem Shaheen.

Today’s Teens

According to Reem, teenagers today are exposed to articles and images that suggest what their bodies are supposed to look like. “This leaves them feeling dissatisfied with their bodies and eventually leads them to having a negative relationship with it,” she says. Now, more attention needs to be given to raising the awareness of teenagers against what they are exposed to in social and mainstream media.

Body Image

Body image, defines Reem, is what one believes their appearance looks like. “It also includes how one feels about his/her own body and sense of control over it as it moves,” she explains, and it is about how one feels in their body. The importance of body image is that it affects how individuals treat themselves and their bodies. Individuals with negative body image tend to have a distorted image of it, feel ashamed, and self-conscious. They believe that their body is a sign of their failure and that others won’t be attracted to them. July/Aug 2017

28

In order to have a positive body image, develop the following: • An honest perception of their body shape, size, and height. • Remember that beauty is a not skin deep, 'true beauty' stems from feeling good about yourself and having self-confidence. • Refuse to spend unreasonable amount of time worrying about food, calories, and exercise. • Keep a long list of things you like about yourself that has nothing to do with your body. • Appreciate what the body can do. After all, the body is the vehicle that carries you towards your dreams. • This doesn’t mean that having a positive body image promotes unhealthy living, tells Reem; it is actually the opposite. It promotes recognizing the capacity and limitations of our bodies as they are, without comparing them to others. H

IDENTIFY YOUR FEARS You can’t fight an enemy you can’t identify. To develop your courage, find out what is hindering it; only then can you master fear.

UNDERSTAND YOUR FEARS Sometimes, the dangers and threats that we face are smaller than we imagine them to be. Understanding your fears is one of the greatest steps you can take toward conquering them.

TALK ABOUT YOUR FEARS Confiding in someone you trust can remove the fog from your eyes, and you can receive good counsel on how to proceed. Surround yourself with brave people; their inspiration can help turn your obstacles into advantages.

READ BOOKS When facing a problem, always remind yourself that someone else has wrestled with a similar predicament. Sometimes, we fear what we don’t understand, and all we need is knowledge to overcome it.

RECITE AFFIRMATIONS Quotations are short, insightful, and full of inspiration.

THINK POSITIVELY When afraid, diligently manage your thoughts. Think about the best that could happen, instead of the worst.

EXERCISE Stack up the endorphins. Replace stress, fear, and anxiety with happy hormones. Working out also boosts you psychologically.

PRAY Whether you are religious or not, prayer has been proven to have healing effects. Releasing your fears to a higher power is one of the simplest proven ways of lightening your burdens.

MENTORSHIP Professional athletes, celebrities, entertainers, and business people will be the first to tell you that having a mentor or trainer goes a long way toward helping you accomplish your goals.

FACE YOUR FEARS The majority of fear’s strength comes from making itself out to look larger than it is. When you face your fears, you take away their power; they become weaker, and you become stronger. Create Your Ergonomic Work Space With increasing rates of obesity coupled with lifestyle diseases, here in the UAE, there is also a new shift from the typically static workspaces to the more ergonomic workspaces that enable improved comfort and less strain on the body. Mouse Usage: Position your mouse close to the keyboard or over the numeric keypad to minimize excessive reaching across. Avoid anchoring your wrist on the desk. Instead, glide the heel of your palm over the moussing surface and use your entire arm to mouse. Task Light: Position a task light to the side opposite your writing hand. Shine it on paper documents, but away from computer monitors to reduce glare. Working recline: Despite what mom may have said, sitting up straight is not good for you. A reclined position and regular postural shifts help eliminate strain, muscle fatigue, and back pain.

The term ergonomic: Because the term “ergonomic” isn’t regulated, it’s used to describe everything from toasters to steamproof mirrors. Be sure your ergo products are backed up by serious research and testing. Remember to take frequent breaks: Every 45 minutes, stand up from your desk and walk around the office for 2 minutes. Humans are not designed to sit continuously all day long. Person to person contact: Rather than calling a colleague in the office, make the effort to get up and meet them. Not only will this boost your office relations, but it will also physically benefit you. Computer screen check: Be sure your computer is at an arm’s length from you and angled correctly towards you and at eye level. Your screen should meet your

eyes, rather than craning your head to meet your screen. This will help prevent neck and back pain. Support your joints: Use the arms of your desk chair and desk top to lean your elbows and obtain wrist support. A good desk chair: Your chair should not be rigid in the back and should enable 5 to 10 degrees of flexibility to reduce tension. Also, your knees should be at around 90 degrees with your feet resting flat on the floor. The standing desk: Remember, standing all day isn’t healthy either. Research has linked health risks with both sitting and standing for long periods of time. Therefore, it’s about finding a balance between sitting and standing throughout the day. Switching between seated and standing postures is an energy booster and good for productivity. H

TAKING HIS PASSION FOR FOOD TO THE NEXT LEVEL….

Entrepreneurship is About Making it Happen

“I am a hard core advocate of the saying – I strongly believe that hard work, dedication, and persistence never fail. I am a son of a restaurateur; my father lost his restaurant when I was only seven years old and we had to face a financial crunch. As a child, it had a great impact on me and I made a promise to myself that one fine day I will open a restaurant and will gift it back to my dad. That’s how TRESIND was born.

BASED IN DUBAI

“I believe Dubai is a perfect platform to launch any venture as the people of Dubai are very open to new and innovative concepts.”

THE LINK BETWEEN FOOD AND BUSINESS

“Food is something that is not new to me – since my youth, I have been associated with food in some way or the other and I believe that the food trading business, in my case, has further helped me understand the food philosophy more. As I deal with the frozen fish business, I understand the importance of various ingredients and how it helps create and develop different flavors in a dish.”

TRESIND AND MOLECULAR GASTRONOMY “With the inception of

concepts like TRESIND – an award - winning modern Indian fine-dining restaurant in Dubai, which has imbibed the unique concept of molecular gastronomy in UAE, the technique of molecular gastronomy incorporated in Indian cuisine helps us in exploring different textures of a dish, which not only uplifts the presentation, but also adds to the modernist concept to Indian cuisine. Through our creations, we are trying to present traditional, authentic Indian flavors in a very modern way and changing the perception of people who thought that Indian cuisine is not at par with European cuisine.”

FOOD SELECTION

“Inspired by the unique concept of molecular gastronomy, the menu showcases Indian delicacies in very modernist approach. Creations like modernist chaat trolley, deconstructed pani puri, and mushroom tea with truffle powder not only reflect the uniqueness of the brand,

but also gives a refreshing twist to cater to the most discerning epicureans.”

FAVORITES

“Years of travelling have taught me a lot about various cuisines from around the world and I would say Peruvian food is my all-time favorite food -I can have it anytime. My favorite chef is my team of chefs--without a doubt.” H

Future Plans “Well, that would be a secret – as I want to surprise our diners.”

From pediatric questions to general medical queries, our panel of experts is here to answer your questions….

IRREGULAR BOWEL MOVEMENTS

Question: What is considered normal for a bowel movement per week? I feel sluggish and sometimes I am not passing stools as often I should be. Do you have any advice to help? Dr. Basma Wissam Malak, General Practitioner/ ER answers: “Many people aren’t sure if their bowel movements are ‘normal’. The truth is that bowel movements are individual, and rather than one ‘normal’ type of bowel movement that fits everyone, there is an entire spectrum of what would be considered in the range of normal. The general range is from 3 times a day to 3 times a week. Although a sluggish bowel movement can be a sign of an underlying medical condition like thyroid problems or irritable bowel syndrome, usually it’s caused by low fiber intake, not drinking enough water, and a lack of exercise. Therefore, in order to improve your bowel movement, you have to increase your intake of a diet rich in fiber which includes: fruits, vegetables, beans, grains, and cereals such as barley, bran, and oatmeal. Also, remember to drink enough water, be sure to exercise, and avoid any dependence on laxatives.”

CAVITIES IN CHILDREN

Question: My 7-year-old son has several deep cavities and the dentist suggested root canals. However, these are milk teeth; is it mandatory to have these treated? Dr. Walaa Mohamed Said Tarabis, Dental Surgeon and Instructor of Pediatric Dentistry answers: “Milk teeth (primary teeth) are important for eating, speech development, and self-confidence. Also, they are important to keep the space ready for the developing permanent teeth. Sometimes, milk teeth will get cavities, similar to adult permanent teeth, and these cavities may be deep; reaching the root canal and may trigger severe pain. In this case, root canal and filling is advised to avoid pain and infection that may develop in such teeth, to keep the space, and to provide a path for permanent teeth to follow when they are ready to erupt.

MILD ARTHRITIS

Question: I am a 42-year-old female and was diagnosed with mild arthritis. My question is what are some hand exercises I can do as my thumb hurts quite a bit throughout the day? Dr. Praveen Kumar, HOD Department of Physical Therapy answers: “In the view that you are diagnosed with mild arthritis and have pain which is affecting your activities throughout day, hand exercises will help strengthen your hands and fingers, increase your range of motion, and give you pain relief. However, you need to keep a few things in mind before you start with these exercises: Exercise within a comfortable and pain-free range, do them correctly, and keep the frequency and repetitions to the minimum when you begin, and slowly progress as you get accustomed to these.” The following hand exercises can be performed twice daily for better results: 1) Make a gentle fist, wrapping your thumb around the finger - hold it for 2 to 3 seconds and release it. 2) Bend your fingertips down to touch the base of each finger joint. Your hand should look a little like a claw. 3) Hold a soft ball in your palm and fingers and squeeze it as hard as you can. 4) Place your hand on a table in a palm down position, bend and extend your thumb. 5) Gently touch your thumb to each of your four fingertips, making the shape of an “O.” “If your hands and fingers feel painful and stiff, try warming them up before you exercise. This can make it easier to move and stretch. Use a heating pad or soak them in warm water for about 5 to 10 minutes. If you continue to experience any problems, contact a physiotherapist.”

SCIENTIFIC INNOVATIONS IN SKINCARE…

MEET DR. HOWARD MURAD, FOUNDER OF MURAD SKINCARE

Cosmeceutical brand Murad recently launched in this region and HEALTH had the chance to meet the brains behind the brand—Dr. Howard Murad—who revealed more about the cutting edge innovations behind the brand. The Unique Approach “The brand is unique in the approach I took in developing skincare formulas – I applied my training as a pharmacist and developed the first brand of clinical skincare products. Our scientific innovations have been backed by 19 patents, and we’re constantly challenging the technology and blends we use in our products.”

July/Aug 2017

40

Key Ingredients “Since I first began my career as a pharmacist as one of the first to create compound prescriptions, I’ve been a long-time believer in the power of a recipe rather than simply relying on one single ingredient. I believe that the power of advanced technology, often paired with natural and botanical ingredients, creates the most effective formula with a range of health and skin benefits.”

Skin Concerns Specific to this Region “The sun is extremely harsh in this region and the common concern we hear about most of the time is largely around pigmentation. The Fast-acting Advanced Active Radiance Serum treatment features Resilient-C Complex that rapidly boosts radiance and reverses visible signs of environmental damage.” “The second area of concern is hydration. Due to the tough desert climate, the skin begins to dehydrate and this can be controlled by using the Murad Hydro-Dynamic® Quenching Essence in the summer. In the winter, one can apply the Hydro-Dynamic® Ultimate Moisture;

developed to target aging caused by dehydration, both Hydro-Dynamic Quenching Essence and Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture utilize a blend of advanced ingredients that work synergistically to deliver essential hydration nutrients and restore skin’s youthful plumpness and resiliency.” “The third concern is acne/ pores or even adult acne. The Acne clearing solution, a powerful formula that quickly treats breakouts, blemishes, and redness while helping restore skin clarity and treating the underlying causes of acne, can help prevent future breakouts. Along with this, the medicated formula of the Clarifying Cleanser that can be used daily, combats acne and skin breakouts. It washes away poreclogging grime, and irritants as it help treat and prevent acne breakouts.”

Skincare Tips • Cleanse daily, in the morning and night, if possible. There’s a lot happening with your skin throughout the day, so it’s important to cleanse your face to remove excess oil, dirt, and other debris. • Treat yourself to a professional facial. It’s a good idea to receive a facial from a professional from time to time – you’ll receive a deeper exfoliation, extractions, if needed, and the added relaxation is a plus. • Skincare is a reflection of how you live your life. Be sure you’re taking care of your overall wellbeing. H

Natural Beauty Products Gaining Ground

Take a visit to your local beauty shop and chances are you will see natural beauty products popping up everywhere. Once considered a choice for a select and small group of people, increasingly we are seeing more and more people looking for natural alternatives. HEALTH takes a closer look. Safety of Ingredients Undoubtedly, consumers are becoming more aware of the harm that certain toxic ingredients such as phthalates and petrolatum have on their health. This is based on increasing information and studies showing the harm these ingredients have, whether as hormone disruptors, skin irritants, or other unwanted health effects. Moreover, skincare and cosmetic formulations are not stringently regulated. While

July/Aug 2017

42

the EU has banned over 1,300 ingredients over safety concerns, only 11 ingredients have been banned in the US. As a result, consumers are increasingly looking for reliable brands and safer products.

Effective and Natural Not only are natural beauty products made with natural and organic ingredients, they are proving to be just as effective as their synthetic counterparts. In the last few years, we are seeing skincare experts and magazine editors singing praises of natural beauty products. Likewise, product reviews by consumers are proving that natural beauty products do a great job at their intended function.

A Better Choice for Sensitive Skin

Harsh chemicals and preservatives such as SLS and fragrances can aggravate the skin, causing redness and skin irritation. As such, natural skincare is generally the go-to for those with sensitive skin as they tend to be milder. Packed with effective, yet gentle and natural ingredients with none or minimally harsh ingredients, these products are ideal for sensitive skin.

Beautiful packaging Gone are the days of simple, rustic packaging for green beauty products. We are now seeing chic and minimalist packaging, that make for visually pleasing products. Take Grown Alchemist, an Australian natural skincare brand that formulates high quality products backed by scientific research. The products are well liked, but what makes it stand out is the sleek, apothecary style packaging.Â

High Tech Formulations One thing has to be said - natural skincare has evolved dramatically. Increasingly, we are seeing advanced methods of extracting ingredients and biotechnology being applied. These methods get the best out of the ingredients to impart the benefits they are associated with. As biotechnology

plays a bigger role in formulations, new and innovative products are becoming available.

consumer. As a result, cruelty-free, vegan, and environmentally conscious brands are being sought-after. H

Three Tips for Taking Care of Your Skin During Travel HAVE YOU EVER ARRIVED AT A NEW COUNTRY LOOKING LIKE YOU HAVEN’T SLEPT FOR WEEKS? NO SURPRISE AS TRAVELING, CLIMATE CHANGE, AND AIRPLANES WILL CERTAINLY AFFECT YOUR SKIN. TO HELP, DR. MOHAMED MOKHTAR SHARES THREE TIPS ON HOW TO KEEP YOUR SKIN HEALTHY AND HYDRATED WHILE TRAVELING.

PACK ESSENTIALS

PROTECT THE SKIN

Trying beauty products in new countries might seem like a good idea and it probably is. But last thing you want on your vacation is discovering you are allergic to an “organic” mask you bought in a local shop. Postpone trying out new goodies until you get back home, and stick to the products that work well for you. Save the space in your luggage by pouring your essential skincare products into travel sized bottles you can find in-store or online. And don’t forget the four pillars of healthy skin: clean, tone, moisturize, and protect.

The importance of protecting your skin from the sun is underrated. If you are too lazy to apply sunscreen, you can just layer it up by incorporating it into all of the products you’re already using, such as moisturizer and primer. Just be sure to use products with an SPF value of at least 30. Also, don’t be afraid to go overboard with the size of your sunglasses to help protect the area around your eyes.

STAY HYDRATED Taking care of your skin externally is important, however, it is equally important to nourish it from within. Staying hydrated is something you should never avoid, no matter where you are, and thus consuming at least two liters of water daily will help keep your skin glowing and clear.

Prime: Use Primer Radiance or Primer Radiance Bronze to make makeup last. Even Your Canvas: Use Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation or tinted moisturizer of choice. Pop on some color: Use Crème Cheek color. Set to stay: Use Candleglow powder all over. Add glow: With a finishing brush, apply face illuminator to the higher area of the cheeks, softly down the nose and on the cupids bow.

STATEMENT BLUSH Unexpected color is popping up everywhere this season. Get the Look: Create your blush canvas: Use Translucent Loose Setting Powder before you apply powder blushes for the smoothest application on skin. Add color: Using Cheek Colour Blush, add a brighter blush tone of Second Skin Cheek Colours such as Violet Orchid or Sweet Mandarin.

SMUDGY EYELINER Get the Look: Prime the eye: Use Eye Basics to make sure your smudgy look stays put all day long. Line the eye: Apply Caviar Eye Stick directly on the lash line, ensuring you are close to the lashes. Add a thicker layer at the end of the lash line. Don’t worry if it’s not even or very straight. Some suggested shades include: Tuxedo, Smoke, Cocoa, or Plum. Start Smudging: Using a Smudge Brush, smooth out harsh edges of the Caviar Stick Eye Colour. You can use your fingers as well to smudge further and frame the eye the way you like. PRO-TIP: For extra oily eye-lids or for hotter climates where makeup doesn’t last, dust on some Translucent Loose Setting Powder after your Eye Basic and before applying Caviar Eye Stick for extra -long wear time.

Layer Color: You can double up on the color you have chosen, or layer it with the darker shade in Shimmer Bloc. Use the darkest shade in Pink Mosaic on top of a pink Cheek Colour, and the darkest shade of Peach mosaic on top of a warm or coral Cheek Colour. PRO-TIP: Avoid bronzer or any contour shade around

Tips to Keeping Makeup Flawless this Summer: Choose skincare wisely: Many people resort to using oil-free products in hotter climates as they want a light texture, but if your skin doesn’t get the nourishment it needs, it will produce more oil to compensate and break your makeup down even more. Don’t forget to prime: Primer is the barrier between your skin care and makeup. It will keep your makeup looking natural and smooth all day. Go easy on the foundation: If you apply more, it won’t last longer. In fact, if you apply

the cheek, this look is about a bright pop of color.

THE NO MAKEUP LOOK “Laura Mercier was the most sought after celebrity makeup artist because her clients loved the way she made their skin look natural and perfect. Along with those application techniques, our brand is famous for complexion products. Our Tinted Moisturizer was launched in the nineties and is one of our top products because it gives you amazing coverage with a ‘no makeup’ feel. It continues to win Beauty Awards. Tinted Moisturizer is the original inspiration for all BB and CC creams that starting popping up in Asia before they crossed the oceans.”

a thin layer only where you need it and set it well – it will last nicely all day. Translucent powder everything – When I am in Dubai, I use Translucent Loose Setting Powder to set eye makeup, face makeup, and even my lipstick for longer wear. Mid-Day Touchup: I like to do a fresh application of Candleglow Concealer & Highlighter mid-day to touch up under the eyes and to pop on a discrete glow on my high cheek areas and down the bridge of my nose. BEAUTY EXPERIENCE: DERMALUX™ LED PHOTOTHERAPY What do celebrities Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Alba, and Kourtney Kardashian have in common? All are self-confessed fans of Dermalux™ LED Phototherapy, a noninvasive skin treatment that uses the power of natural light by energizing cells to repair quicker and rejuvenate faster. What it is Olimpia Carmen, Laser, Skin Care, and Anti-Aging Specialist, explains that Dermalux™ LED Phototherapy treatment is proven clinically and provides one of the fastest and safest ways to reverse the visible signs of aging at the cellular level, clear acne prone skin and blemishes, and heals sensitive and inflammatory skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis.

The Technology The Dermalux is a revolutionary light technology which uses a combination of three carefully selected light wavelengths, each with a set of unique benefits. The device uses controlled levels of Red, Blue, and Near Infrared light to help produce vitamin C, accelerate tissue healing by recharging the cells and energizing them to

heal quicker and rejuvenate faster. The result is improved tissue repair and reduction of tissue inflammation. The absorbed energy will boost the cells to regenerate 150 to 200 percent faster than normal.

the light therapy and then goggles were placed over my eyes. Next, the Dermalux light was moved into place, on top of my head. There was no sound and I literally felt no pain or discomfort.

Results

LED Phototherapy uses color wavelengths of visible light which have specific rejuvenating benefits within the skin. Skin cells have the ability to absorb light and use it as a source of energy to fuel the repair and rejuvenation of damaged cells or kill bacteria. The increased energy enhances cellular metabolism, which in turn stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, boosts circulation, and accelerates tissue repair. This whole process results in radiant, youthful, and naturally healthy skin.

Procedure I was asked to lie down on the treatment bed and my makeup was removed. My skin was prepped for

I was surprised to see the results were immediate. My skin looked brighter and tighter. After just one treatment, my skin looked hydrated, plump, and radiant. Olimpia explained that the number of treatments can vary with age, skin type, and condition. With light therapy, the results are cumulative and improvement will continue even after the treatment has stopped. However, treatments taken in quick succession will achieve optimum results and maintenance treatments may also be recommended. Furthermore, as light therapy does not harm the skin, there is no limit to the number of treatments you can have. H For more details visit: www.wellbeingmedicalcentre.com

Swimming provides a high intensity cardio workout for your kids, which is well needed in a time where sedentary lifestyles are talking over, coupled with the heavy dose of studies from schools.

Teaches SelfDiscipline

Swimming inculcates a habit of self-discipline, as

is the case with any sport. Participating in relays in the water, learning new skills, and mastering swimming strokes are all part and parcel of selfdiscipline. Also being ready on time and in the proper clothing helps a child gain mastery over time and managing it properly.

A Skill for Life

Once a child has learned a skill, it is for life. Swimming has so many health and wellbeing benefits, and once a child learns to love the sport, it will most likely continue it into adulthood. H

A PASSION FOR FITNESS BACKGROUND 35-year-old U.S. born and bred Walter explains that it was by the age of 27 when he made a decision to make a career out of fitness. “I started working at the local Gold’s Gym where I helped people lose weight, but sports were my ultimate passion, so I then started training basketball and American football players,” he says, and this soon formed an addiction for him to learn how to make people bigger, faster, and stronger and help them accomplish their sporting objectives.

such an amazing feeling to work with someone so close for several months and then seeing it all come together as they do what they set out to do,” he says. “It makes me feel proud and it has a positive impact on the lives of others.”

TODAY’S FITNESS For Walter Moore, a personal trainer, fitness and sports started off as a hobby, but soon transformed into a career.

TRU BEAST Interestingly, Walter uses a term ‘Tru Beast’ which he points out is his ‘mentality for training and fitness’ and explains, “I coined this term which means you are not just good at one thing, but you train to be physically and mentally ready for anything. I do not feel one should put themselves in a box with a single discipline.”

Fitness is pivotal these days and Walter believes this is because of obesity which has become a global epidemic. He elaborates, “We are living in a world where new technologies are making us sluggish and this unhealthy lifestyle is passed from adults to their children. With the likes of video games and Netflix, children are spending more time indoors rather than being active outdoors.” H Social Media Links: Snapchat: trubeast33 Instagram iamtrubeast

INSPIRATION Having such immense passion for staying fit requires a great deal of motivation, so what inspires Walter? He explains it is all about helping someone work so hard to accomplish something and then watching them achieve it. “It is

Summer Skin Guide HEALTH PRESENTS YOUR GO-TO GUIDE FOR EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SUN PROTECTION AND HOW TO STAY SAFE IN THE SUMMER SUN…

July/Aug 2017

60

According to skin cancer prevention group Rub It In (rubitin.info), 71 percent of us admit to not wearing sun protection cream when going outside in the heat. In fact, Dr. Shadan Naji, Dermatologist and Aesthetic Medicine expert explains that the most important thing that has a tremendous effect on our skin is the amount of our exposure to the sun. She notes, “The ultraviolet radiation in the solar spectrum causes skin aging and can induce several health problems such as pigmentation and even skin cancer.” Also, as children we are exposed to a huge amount of sun radiation which to adulthood, has a cumulative effect on our skin later on in our life. Therefore, dermatologists stress the importance of a proactive lifestyle which includes avoiding mid-day sun, wearing protective clothing, and using a sunscreen that provides protection from both UVA and UVB.

KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE

There are six different skin types, with each one requiring a different level of sun protection. Here is a handy guide to work out your skin type, and how to protect your skin in the sun.

TYPE 4 You have brown eyes and dark hair, with skin that tans easily and only burns with very lengthy sun exposure. You are at moderate risk of skin cancer, so wear sunscreen and take breaks from the sun. TYPE 5 You have naturally brown skin, with brown eyes and dark hair. You burn only with excessive exposure to the sun and your skin darkens easily. You are at a lower risk of skin cancer, but should still take care to apply SPF to reduce your risk of skin cancer and accelerated aging.

of skin cancer, but should wear sunscreen for protection from the aging effects of the sun.

DID YOU KNOW?

Even if there is less sun or cloudy weather, Dr. Naji explains that this does not block UV rays. She advises to wear sun screen in routine. The most dangerous hours for skin cancer prone individuals in UAE are between 10 am and 4 pm in the summer and between 11 am and 3 pm in winter.

TYPE 6 You have very dark brown/ black skin with dark brown eyes and black hair. You burn only with extreme exposure to the sun. You are at low risk

TYPE 1 You have pale skin, coupled with blonde or red hair and freckles, may burn very easily and rarely tan. You’re most at risk of developing skin cancer, so take particular care in the sun and wherever possible, seek shade. TYPE 2 You have light hair, blue or brown eyes and very fair skin with skin that usually burns, but may gradually tan. You are at high risk of developing skin cancer, so avoid sunbathing. TYPE 3 You probably have light olive skin with dark hair and brown or green eyes. You tan easily, but will burn after prolonged exposure to the sun. You are at significant risk of skin cancer, so avoid lengthy spells in the sun.

FAQS ABOUT SUN PROTECTION

WHAT IS SUN PROTECTION FACTOR (SPF)? Dr. Ikramullah Al Nasir, Specialist Dermatologist explains that SPF relates only to the ability of a sunscreen to block sun burning UVB rays as sunburns are caused by UV-B radiation, SPF does not indicate protection from UV-A. The ideal, state-of-the-art sunscreen should have a high SPF rating ideally between SPF 30 to 60 and be welltolerated, cosmetically pleasant, non-toxic, provide broad spectrum coverage against both ultraviolet rays type A and B with ingredients that do not break down in the sun; and also should be waterresistant. WHAT DOES THE SPF NUMBER MEAN? Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a number that you can use to help determine how long you can stay in the sun before getting sunburnt. For example, if you use a sunscreen with sun protection factor of 5, then theoretically you could stay outside in the sunlight five times longer before getting sunburn compared to the time required to get sunburn without using the sunscreen. FOR THE UAE, WHICH IS THE BEST SPF TO USE? According to Dr. Al Nasir, many women believe that

July/Aug 2017

62

because they are using foundation with an SPF 15 built into it, they don’t require a separate SPF. “I am not a proponent of mixed sun screens. It’s advisable to use SPF 30 pure sunscreen by itself and also do not apply it just two minutes before going out. You need to apply a teaspoon of sunscreen/sun block and half a teaspoon for the neck area at least 30 to 40 minutes before sun exposure in order for it to absorb. Cover all of the areas to be exposed and remember to reapply if you are outdoors for longer duration or partaking in water sports.” WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SUN PROTECTION? Marketed sun protections have two types of actions: one is physical, while the other is chemical. Physical sun protection usually contains opaque compounds that mostly reflect and scatter UV and visible light, and are called sun blocks. The most common ingredients in these are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The second is chemical sunprotection which contains substances that absorb radiation and block the action spectrum of UVA such as oxybenzone or avobenzone, and UVB which contains PABA, benzophenones, cinamates, salicylates, and others.

DEBUNKING SUN PROTECTION MYTHS WATER RESISTANT SUN LOTION MEANS I AM SAFE TO GET IN AND OUT OF THE WATER.

FALSE. Water resistant sunscreen should be reapplied after 40 minutes if you have been sweating or swimming, whereas “waterproof ” sunscreen should provide protection in the water for 80 minutes.

YOU ONLY NEED SUN LOTION ON HOT AND SUNNY DAYS.

FALSE. Even if there is less sun or cloudy weather, this does not block UV rays. Wear sunscreen in routine. The most dangerous hours for skin cancer prone individuals in UAE are between 10 am and 4 pm in the summer and between 11 am and 3 pm in winter.

BROAD SPECTRUM OFFERS THE BEST PROTECTION.

TRUE. Broad spectrum sun protection refers to sunscreen having a longer protection period against both UVA and UVB.

MARKS AND MOLES Skin cancer has a 95 percent success rate when detected early and a key to early detection is regular selfexamination of your skin, regardless of your skin type.

DIY MOLE MONITORING: EXAMINE YOUR MOLES REGULARLY SO YOU CAN RECOGNIZE ANY CHANGES. HERE’S WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR... Asymmetry: See whether one half of the mole does not match the other half in size, shape, colour or thickness. Border: Note any irregular borders, such as ragged, blurred, or poorly defined edges. Check for any spread of pigment from your mole to the area of skin surrounding it. Color: The color of the mole should be the same throughout, without shades of tan, brown, black, red, white, or blue. Size: Be alert to any increases in the size of your mole. Melanomas are usually greater than six millimetres in diameter, but they can be smaller. Sensation: Be alert to changes in the sensation of your mole, such as pain or itchiness. Surface: Note any redness in your mole, as well as changes in the surface, such as crusting or oozing. H

MAKING TRAVEL A WAY OF LIFE

With a passion for travel and love of cultural diversity, Brazilian entrepreneur Eduardo Luce Glitz and his Brazilian designer wife Thaina Cabral Glitz have made travel a way of life. HEALTH meets with the couple to learn more‌ July/Aug 2017

64

The Journey “I worked very hard for over 15 years in my own business with very little time for family and friends. I had a very high level of anxiety every day. My mom passed away in 2015; she had always told me that life is not only about business and we should balance it out. So, I decided to sell everything and follow her advice. Subsequently, we organized an around the world trip. In the beginning, the plan was to do 1 year which we did in 407 days, visiting 42 countries. We covered almost all of the countries that we wished to visit. We are planning to have kids, so we felt this was just the right time to do that.”

The Inspiration “We love to understand different cultures, what moves each person towards happiness, the importance of religion, education, and work; as each is unique according to each culture. We also love to visit different restaurants and hotels. For us, food is art and it is a special pleasure to be able to taste the different flavors of

the world. Also, for us, the key elements of a perfect holiday are a nice companion, good weather, and a new culture to learn about.”

Golden Memories “Of all of our trips, I think the most memorable is Bhutan. However, it is very difficult to narrow it down to only one place. We actually have six places we feel, in our opinion, are best. These are: The Gold Coast in Australia, Bhutan, the countryside of China, Iceland, the countryside of Switzerland, and the South Africa safaris.”

Travel for Self-enrichment “Travelling around the world to different countries is an opportunity that enables a humble lesson. To understand that Bhutan exists and it is where people are the happiest in the entire world. To understand that Vietnam is not only about the war, that Brazil is not only about the Carnival and soccer, and so on…There are so many lessons that show how ignorant we really are, and always will be; there is just so much to learn from travelling around the world.”

Eduardo’s Top Travel Tips • Be sure to have a local SIM card. • Also, search restaurants on ‘Trip Advisor’ as reviews are very important. • Aim to hire a local guide as they are the best way to learn about local culture. • Also, look for local flight tickets on Skyscanner. • Lastly, avoid touristic places when travelling.” H

Preferred Accommodation Style “We like to visit 5-star hotels, especially the new ones. We like Airbnb for a longer stay, but in our case, we have slept in 130 different hotels in 407 days. In fact, the comfort level of a hotel is very important for us.”

Childhood vaccination is a widely discussed topic, about which people have a number of opposing and varied opinions. HEALTH asks Specialist Pediatrician Dr. Simi Kiruthiga Senthil Kumar the more frequently asked questions about immunizations in children.

Q) Why are immunizations in kids’ important in optimizing health and wellness? A) “Childhood vaccination is a widely discussed topic, about which people have a number of opposing and varied opinions. Medical practitioners strongly advise having children vaccinated during their early years as it acts as a form of prevention/ protective shield against various infectious and life threatening diseases. Vaccinations build a child’s immune system, if a child isn’t vaccinated, their body may not be strong enough to fight against certain dangerous diseases.”

Q) Who else do immunizations help? A) “Immunization always has a holistic impact, when a child is vaccinated; it not only helps the child’s body from being affected by a disease, but also protects the society at large. It helps prevent diseases from

spreading to others; like children who are too young to be vaccinated or people who are unable to take certain vaccinations because of a particular condition or infection. The long term effects of having your child immunized are much greater than developing a serious health condition.”

Q) Which authority decides which vaccines are required for children in a particular country? A) “Every country has a health policy that makes certain vaccinations mandatory and others voluntary. It is the government and concerned health authorities that decide the vaccinations required for children in every country. For example, the Ministry of Health and Prevention and health authorities such as the Dubai Health Authority and Health Authority Abu Dhabi who decide on the Immunization Policy in

the United Arab Emirates. These regulations and policies apply to all of the hospitals licensed under these bodies including government hospitals, private hospitals, and those in the free zones.”

Q) What are the top vaccines for kids here? A) “As per the Childhood immunization and National immunization Program, the single and combined dose vaccinations recommended by the DHA are: BCG at birth, Diphtheria, Pertusis, Tetanus and Haemophilus Influenza Type B from the age of 2 months till the child is 18 months old, Hepatitis B from birth till the child is 6 months old, Polio from 6 months until the child is 5 years old, Pneumococcal from 2 month until 18 months, Measles, Mumps and Rubella at 1 and 5 years of age.” H For more details, visit: www.dha.gov. ae/Documents/HRD/ Immunization%20 Guidelines.pdf

HEALTH speaks with Thomas Lundgren, Chief Emotional Officer at THE One about summer trends in home furnishings.

The Importance of Lighting Remember, function first, and then fashion. A good light setting is really important to create the right atmosphere and feeling of comfort, but functionality as well as flexibility should be considered before making a final choice. If you are reading and writing, then a direct light will be the best to help you see. But if you are seated at a desk, remember to place your desk lamp to the left if you are right-handed so your hand doesn’t cast a shadow over what you are writing and vice versa. Lamps that spread light evenly are recommended when doing household chores or puzzles with the kids on the coffee table.

beds or sofas if you can. Hang wall cabinets or put up extra shelves or hooks on walls so as not to crowd the floor. Use interesting baskets and boxes that will look attractive on display. Keep it Together: Grouping items together instead of spreading them out will result in a less messy look and a much calmer feeling. Keep a decorative tray in the bathroom for your perfumes or on the coffee table for your remotes. Less is More: Don’t keep too many knickknacks out in plain view. Think about what you need or want close at hand, and stash the rest. No Place like Home: Always keep things where they belong and return them to their ‘home’ immediately after use.

High Five. In general, depending on the size of your room, it’s a good idea to think five light sources. THE One has a wide range of exciting lighting options available in various sizes and styles, from round shaped pendant lamps to chic chandeliers, Moroccan-inspired lanterns, funky floor lamps, and more. Go light and green, not bright. One common mistake people make is using light bulbs with

too high of a wattage, creating harsh light that is not pleasing to the eye. When purchasing new light bulbs, try and make the switch to new energy saving ones – it is where everyone is going or should be going.

Apartment Living Tips Make Room: Be creative and find those extra spaces that are not really there. Go high if you have high ceilings by installing shelves over doors or above cabinets. Go low and use the space under

More natural materials and organic shapes are coming through. Interiors are more down to earth and natural rather than glossy and shiny. At THE One, we aim to do a bit of both and mix the trends up. We have noticed that mirror finishes on furniture is still doing really well in this region. Velvet too is still going strong, both shiny and matte versions. For natural materials, marble and other stone finishes on anything from walls and floors to furniture and accessories are on - trend. In terms of colors, more muted and matte shades of green and pink, as well as the all-time favorites white, taupe, and grey are popular. H

Our helpful server Virgil was on hand to suggest some signature dishes; we started with the Dim Sum--a platter of steamed scallop, chicken, prawn, and vegetable Dim Sums served with sweet chili sauce. We also nibbled on spicy Tempura prawns which were crunchy, but still creamy due to the cream cheese and wasabi mayonnaise combination. As we are big sushi fans, we sampled the sushi platter which included spicy Volcano rolls, Sashimi salmon, and a variety of Nigiri rolls. All of these were fresh and packed with flavor. We opted for the Kaiso salad, a seaweed salad made with a tangy combination of seaweed and cucumber, garnished with a ponzu dressing. For the mains, one of my favorites was the black colored Forbidden Rice which was brimming over with scallops, prawns, calamari, and edamame, all in one super flavorful dish that was like a meal in itself. The Seared Black Cod was marinated in a beetroot miso preparation and served with baby spinach and basil. And from the wok, we sampled the Deep Fried Stone Bass; made from hoisin sauce, tomato, lotus roots, carrots, and ginger puree. It went perfectly with the steamed jasmine rice. H

Desserts here are also showstoppers. One was a magnificent molecular gastronomy creation—The Lotus Flower. As Virgil poured the hot chocolate syrup over the sphere, a beautiful flower made of dark chocolate, mango mousse, an unusual spicy sorbet, and cocoa nibs was revealed. We also had the Matcha Green Tea cake with red current sauce, another unique take on a very Eastern styled dessert.

Verdict: Sea Fu serves up superbly presented sea food with a strong hint of Asian influence in a French Haute Cuisine style. If you are looking for a perfect venue to celebrate a special event and love sea food, then Sea Fu is a must try. INDULGING YOUR SWEET TOOTH… MEET SUGARMOO’S FOUNDERS RAKI PHILLIPS AND ALAN HONEIN Does the thought of freshly baked cakes, yummy cookies, and truffles, cupcakes and brownies delivered anywhere in the UAE under just 90 minutes sound too good to be true? SugarMoo Desserts is doing this and a whole lot more. Meet Raki Phillips, CEO/Co-Founder and Alan Honein, Managing Partner of SugarMoo Desserts, who explain the secret of their sweet success.

The Start Raki Phillips: “The F&B Delivery business in Dubai is a $750M USD per year business of which desserts were almost non-existent. We wanted to capitalize on that market with the advantage of delivering freshly baked desserts in under 90 Minutes straight from our ovens to your home or office. Our research showed that most dessert establishments were focused on either Arabic sweets or cupcakes, so having an ‘anti-cupcake’ unique

hybrid dessert offering that looked as amazing as it tasted was a fresh new addition to the Dubai market. We launched in 2014 for the simple reason that we absolutely love desserts and when you are passionate about something, why not make it a yummy brand?”

Top Desserts Raki Phillips: “Without a doubt our Lotuslicious Truffles are a huge hit and are small enough to pop into your mouth in one

go and big enough to kill that sweet craving! Our Brownie Mess in a Jar is another firm favorite, especially with Alan - salty gooey caramel over our signature Nutella brownies.”

The Difference Raki Phillips: “We strongly believe in using only the best natural ingredients for all of our desserts and it has such a positive effect on both quality and taste. It might cost a little more, but it is worth

Challenges Raki Phillips: “The biggest challenge in launching the business was dealing with suppliers who made promises and missed deadlines. As a small business, every minute counts and with limited funding, delays have a huge impact on a start-ups cash flow. We went through the whole issue from developers, contractors, and service providers and it was very frustrating in the beginning. That’s why I strongly believe once you find the right supplier, stick to them and grow both your businesses together by being supporting of each other.”

it to know our customers are not eating preservatives, sweeteners, or other unnecessary chemicals. Only locally sourced ingredients make our desserts taste great and freshly baked out of our HACCP certified bakery in the heart of Dubai. We deliver 90 minutes only across Dubai. But we also offer daily deliveries to Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. Those two Emirates are so important to us and we want to be able to cater to our customers across the UAE. One of our Dessert Labs is located in Yas Mall, Abu Dhabi and we love our customers in the capital.”

Healthy Desserts Raki Phillips: “We launched our HealthyMoo line based on so many customers’ requests and we have also expanded that line. It includes

a variety of dessert options that cater to different customer needs including low-fat, sugar-free, and allergy-free selections. We don’t use any sweeteners or chemicals in our HealthyMoo line.”

Three Must-Have Baking Tools Raki Phillips: “Firstly, a good oven for reliability which we consider like our baking insurance. A sturdy spatula to handle our home made rich cake batters and finally- perhaps not the tool you meant, but good talent is a very important baking tool we couldn’t live without. Good talent is hard to come by and we invest in our talent who we call family.” H

UAE BASED FOOD SAFETY AND QUALITY PROFESSIONAL LAUNCHES ‘GLOBAL DIET’ At a time when nutritionists and fitness enthusiasts are overwhelmed with numerous diet plans for weight loss, UAE based food safety and quality professional, Ayman Natsheh has launched a unique practical concept of diet based on having a moderately balanced diet every week. This allows consumers to have their favorite food items, yet maintain a healthy weight. As explained in his newly launched book ‘The Global Diet’, it is an easy to follow plan, and for those with no prior knowledge of nutrition, it can be broken down into simple steps by a qualified nutritionist. The diet moves

away from the concept of eating only healthy food on a daily basis, which is difficult for most people to adhere to. Instead, it allows consumers to have their favorite foods, provided the frequency and quantity of consumption is modified every week. The diet should be supplemented by an exercise program equivalent to a person’s caloric intake. Natsheh explains: “Having a nutritionally balanced week is an easier way of communicating, understanding, and implementing nutritional recommendations, than following a balanced meal, because meals can have different levels of balance: totally

balanced, almost balanced, partially balanced and nonbalanced meals. The ‘Global Diet’ I have proposed in my book allows people to eat their favorite foods, even if it is a burger or a pizza. All they need to do is organize their favorite food into a weekly table, and modify their quantity and frequency of consumption with the help of a nutritionist. In this diet, they can follow a moderately

balanced diet week every week. In the long run, this can help in weight management and prevent lifestyle diseases. If properly followed, this new diet plan can possibly help overcome the global challenges of diseases related to wrong nutrition.”

MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND PREVENTION SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH PFIZER TO PROTECT UAE SOCIETY FROM CHRONIC DISEASES The Ministry of Health and Prevention recently signed an agreement with Pfizer-Gulf to raise local community awareness on infectious diseases and highlight the role of preventive measures and vaccinations in building a sustainable and healthy environment according to local and international policies and legislations. In the presence of Dr. Mohamed Salim Al Olama, Undersecretary of the UAE Ministry of Health & Prevention, the agreement was signed at the Ministry’s office in Dubai by Dr. Hussein Abdul Rahman Al-Rand, Assistant Undersecretary for Health Centers and Clinics, July/Aug 2017

and Dr. Mohammad Fawzi, Chairman of Pfizer GroupGulf.

The agreement seeks to emphasize the importance of vaccination in eliminating infectious diseases in society. It also aims to raise community awareness and improve the efficiency of healthcare providers according to advanced methods. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that infectious diseases continue to be among the leading causes of death worldwide. H.E. Dr. Al-Rand added that the Ministry’s agreement with Pfizer will increase 84

awareness level and focus on capacity building to fight infectious diseases and promote vaccination programs. The scope of the agreement also covers medical professional training as an effective strategy to identify and implement preventive measures and minimize risk exposure. This is in line with the Ministry’s strategy to build a world-class health system to protect the UAE society from communicable diseases, promote healthy lifestyles, and reduce associated diseases. H.E. pointed out that the agreement is aligned with the national strategy aimed at combating non-communicable diseases in the next five years

(2017-2021). The strategy has four main pillars, namely leadership and governance; risk factor prevention and reduction; surveillance, monitoring, and evaluation; and scientific research and monitoring of diseases. This is in line with the goal of UAE Vision 2021 to establish a health sector based on the highest international standards.

CLEVELAND CLINIC ABU DHABI LAUNCHES SMOKING CESSATION PROGRAM TO TACKLE MAJOR SOCIAL CHALLENGE

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has launched a Smoking Cessation Program to help people trying to quit the deadly habit following World No Tobacco Day on May 31. According to the fifth World Tobacco Atlas, an average of 27 people in the UAE die each week due to tobacco-related diseases and the current rate of smoking is 24.3 percent among males and 0.8 percent among women. While cigarettes are the highest profile threat to public health,

medwakh and shisha, which continue to be popular in the UAE, also pose a significant risk. In introducing the program, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi hopes to make a significant contribution to reducing smoking levels in Abu Dhabi, and support its wider public health goal of helping people

enjoy healthier lifestyles to avoid the need for treatment later in life. The program is listed as one of Abu Dhabi’s certified smoking cessation centers by the Health Authority – Abu Dhabi (HAAD). Iyaad Hasan, DNP, CNP, a certified tobacco treatment specialist who leads the program, explained: “There are numerous benefits to quitting smoking. Apart from helping you live longer, it also improves your quality of life, making you feel and even look better. After you stop smoking, your sense of taste and smell also benefit, and you save money by not smoking.” “Beyond the immediate benefits that can be felt within hours of

stopping, there are numerous long-term health benefits. Just one year after quitting, your risk of a heart attack drops sharply. After two-to-five years, your risk of stroke drops to the same level as a nonsmoker. Our program is based on a proven method developed at Cleveland Clinic in the US, which has achieved a success rate around 20 percent, which is double the USA’s national average,” he added. Consisting of four main steps, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Smoking Cessation Program follows smokers from their decision to quit through to life after smoking, creating a customized program for each individual. “It’s never too late to quit smoking,” stresses Hassan. “We develop a tailored program for every person, designing a plan that best fits their personal situation to help them become non-smokers.”
