FROM THE PUBLISHER

e’ve all read the countless articles and studies. We’ve seen the data. And what we find, joyously, is that research on human wellness totally complements our intuition: Healthy life choices are tremendously beneficial to our physical and mental well-being! Think: reducing caloric intake, eating healthier, quitting smoking, minimizing alcohol consumption, managing stress, and exercising regularly. These simple strategies help us achieve our goals and get the most out of life. Of course, we’re creatures of habit, aren’t we? Even with a laundry list of choices, we tend to stick with what’s familiar. And just like going to your favorite restaurant or dry cleaner, you’ve probably stuck with your favorite gym for years. This isn’t a bad thing! It’s encouraging, stimulating, and sometimes necessary to maintain your routine in an environment of like-minded people.

is a grateful, humble, faithful, kind and caring person and health care professional. One morning in the locker room I overheard him talking about an upcoming trip. My initial thought was, vacation. I would Left to right: Rodney Folmar, GMF MEDIA soon learn, it was a trip GROUP, Dr. Michael Kuchera, Summit Medical he takes several times & Marc D’Angiolillo, Partner, Riker Danzig. a year to help people in other countries. Turns out, Dr. Kuchera is involved with a non-profit organization, UHMLA or Unidad Hospitalaria Movil Latino America, sending healthcare providers on medical service trips throughout Latin America.

Which brings me to my main point:

Incredible, isn’t it? How four times a year, without pay or fanfare, he and others travel to some of the most remote parts of the world to help people in desperate need.

Intuitively, we know the health benefits of working out. But another benefit is the people you meet and friendships you develop, like the one I’m blessed to have with Michael.

I’d like to begin this issue by acknowledging and thanking Dr. Kuchera, Dr. Rolandelli, Dr. Bamboat and the entire UHMLA organization for the mission they have undertaken.

Our friendship began like most gym friendships do: first, with a slight nod and smile. Then a hello, and eventually a “see you tomorrow.” Before long, we were striking up conversations.

The way I see it, this is just one of the incredible added benefits of going to the gym. The people we meet.

I soon learned Dr. Michael Kuchera, who specializes in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Summit Medical Group,

Congratulations to Morristown resident Russell (Russ) Michelson who recently joined RB (formerly known as Reckitt Benckiser) as Regulatory Director. RB is a multi-national consumer goods company based in the United Kingdom. Russ will oversee U.S. and global regulatory activities for RB’s dietary supplement line. Raised in Northern New Jersey, Russ graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in General Biology from the University of Maryland, College Park. While in college, he followed his passion by focusing on natural medicine and nutrition. Following graduation, Russ interned with the FDA, spending time with the Center for Food Safety. For the past six and half years, he was with Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, most recently as lead of their U.S. regulatory team. It was in that role that Russ oversaw all dietary supplement and cosmetic programs and became responsible for engagement with the two largest trade associations in his field, the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) and the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA). Through his latest career move, Russ continues his role as co-chair of the Regulatory Affairs Committee with CRN. Russ role at RB, in partnership with CRN and CHPA, allows Russ opportunities to meet directly with the FDA, FTC, and members of Congress, present at industry conferences and events on important industry topics, and help lead the charge with key decision makers in the Dietary Supplement industry. Between work and travel, Russ has continued to prioritize fitness and nutrition, improvising workouts wherever he stays and finding ways to either pack supplements or have them delivered to his hotel. Menopause

hat is it about menopause that changes our bodies so much? Menopause is a natural transition in life but the hormonal changes starting during the peri-menopausal years can lead to hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, irritability, memory loss, insomnia, and weight gain. So, why is weight gain so common during menopause? Is it truly related to hormonal changes and inevitable? Although common, weight gain can be avoided with appropriate changes that include healthy eating and an active lifestyle.

The Hormone Connection During menopause, the production of the hormone estrogen decreases significantly compared to previous years. The drop in estrogen levels affects multiple areas in the body including the brain, heart, ovaries, uterus, vagina, bones, etc. Reduced estrogen levels may lower basal metabolic rate which means that we need fewer calories to maintain the same weight. It is thought, although not proven, that decreased estrogen leads to decreased energy levels and decreased activity. It also affects your mood, appetite, and other bodily functions that dictate exercise, sexual activity, and how your body regulates glucose levels.

Causes of Weight Gain During Menopause The hormonal changes predispose weight gain in the middle section shifting the body composition and increasing fat mass around the gut and organs in the abdomen. This type of fat is called visceral fat and increase the risk for heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol. However, sedentary lifestyle, lack of sleep and physical activity, genetic factors and just aging in general, are also contributors.

Dr. Flynn is the Founder and director of Metanu Center, a metabolic nutrition center in Morristown.

“Dance when you vacuum the house. Exercise produces endorphins that make us happier.” exercise, decreased activity and frequently poor food choices. As we age, the muscle mass decrease and the fat mass increases leading to decreased metabolic rate and consequently our body burns fewer calories than previously for the same activity. It’s easier to gain weight and harder to lose it. Genetics are also a factor and your parents and close relatives body fat distribution may be similar to yours. What is the Solution? Although there is no easy fix to prevent or reverse weight gain during menopause, there are many lifestyle changes that can help. In order to lose weight effectively and keep it off permanently, you need to eat a healthy diet and smaller portions than in your 30-40’s (200-250 calories less a day). There is no one size fits all but in general a Mediterranean type diet with adequate fruit, vegetables, and legumes in addition to lean protein and healthy fats are a good choice. Avoid sweets, processed foods items and eliminate alcoholic beverages that are full of empty calories. Increase your activity by strength training at least twice a week and low impact aerobics at least 150 minutes a week. In addition to regular exercise, park your car and walk more. Dance when you vacuum the house. Exercise produces endorphins that make us happier. It’s the little things that will keep you moving and prevent you from gaining those extra pounds. Menopause doesn’t mean you have to let your weight get out of control. Talk to your physician and find out what you can do to help keep those extra pounds under control. Learning about what your body needs will make it easier to maintain your weight and stay healthy and fit. FLU KNEW? The importance of self-care

“I contracted more than the flu – I caught wisdom, and so can you.”

At Frio Chiropractic, we take great pride in providing the finest chiropractic wellness care to our patients.

stress, anxiety, and self-neglect. I knew weekly massages were not in my budget, but I could commit to a weekly bath, surrounded by candles with scented Epsom salts and relaxing spa music playing on my phone. At first, it was hard to carve out the time, but now everyone knows my “tub time” is MY time. I also started listening to audiobooks or podcasts while driving, folding laundry and cooking, turning mundane things into an educational experience, which I love. Making time to stretch in the morning, walk at lunchtime, work out with a friend, write in a journal, learn to meditate or pray are small actionable steps you can take. Find one or two things that appeal to YOU, then commit them to the schedule. If you don’t make time for yourself, no one else will.

A

By Sharon M. Cirillo

t the beginning of last year, I took a week off from work. Sounds wonderful, right? Actually, I had the flu, and it was terrible. We have all been there, run down, taking care of every responsibility no matter what. When we think of pampering ourselves, most women dismiss it as something unaffordable, self-centered, or unrealistic given financial or time constraints. Yet, we think nothing of taking a proactive approach when it comes to family and work. Having the flu gave me time to think about why I didn’t stop until I absolutely had to, and prompted me to make necessary changes in my lifestyle. I invite you to consider my top three tips for creating time and embracing the concept of self-care: Be it ever so humble, there is no place like home. Make one area of your home EXACTLY the way you want it. It could be as simple as a corner of a room that becomes a “clutter-free zone.” I have limited space, yet I was able to purchase a comfy hot pink chair, and a fuzzy blanket at Home Goods for less than I would spend to get my hair done. I call it my “Gratitude Chair,” and when I sit in it, I immediately think of five things I grateful for. It is now an association I have with it, so when I am feeling out of sorts, even five minutes sitting in MY chair brings me back to center. Self-care is not selfish. If we are quick to catch colds, get overtired, or lose sleep, these can be physical manifestations of

Budget for balance. I don’t believe in a “work/life balance” since for most of us work takes up the majority of our waking hours. However, there needs to be some margin. We can make room in our budget for things to help counter-act the everyday grind. I found some monthly expenses worth eliminating so that I could embrace something much more meaningful to me, my time. I gave up paying for lunch, grabbing take out and getting my hair and nails done so that I could hire a cleaning service every two weeks. I also had groceries delivered that I ordered online, and yes, loosened my standards on what I thought a “ripe avocado” should be. As a single working mother, the infusion of time was priceless. Everyone’s individual needs will be different. There are services designed for just about everything to make your time more efficient and your day a bit easier. Invest the dollars wisely by investing in yourself. Gratitude is possible. I was absolutely miserable with the flu, and the more I focused on it, the worse it became. Then, I remembered gratitude. I thought about my hot shower, clean sheets, fresh clothes, a warm bed, medicine, and health insurance. I was safe, and a phone call away from help if I needed it. Call it hype, call it new-age, call it whatever you want to call it, but it helped a lot. I realized that if I can force myself to be grateful feeling like that, then like any other habit, I need to force myself to do it in all sorts of scenarios. It’s far too easy to take the smallest things for granted, and being grateful amidst the chaos of life makes it all that much more tolerable. Being proactive and making time for our daily self-care keeps us physically and emotionally fit. Investing small amounts of time, infused with things that bring us peace and pleasure can detoxify the soul, energize the spirit, and rejuvenate the body.

eet the 33-year-old Nurse Practitioner (NP) aiming to revolutionize access to healthcare for urban communities. Rakiyah Jones, DNP, FNP-BC or “Dr. Kai”, as called by his patients, started his journey of helping others with the vision of serving under served communities in and around Montclair, New Jersey. He takes a special interest in those communities who are frequently overlooked, including People of Color, Transgender and Gender Non-Binary (TGNB), and Veterans. Dr. Kai has an unwavering desire to give back to the community in which he was raised. His love of medicine and dream of helping those who have little, to no access to healthcare services, has guided him along the way. After serving his country on active duty as an Army Nurse Corps Officer he returned home to continue his advanced education. While working towards those degrees he realized there was more that he could do then just graduate and work for another company. This led him to become an entrepreneur, and he founded, the Minority and Veteran owned KinFolk Health brand leading to the KinFolk Family Health Center in Montclair, New Jersey.

By Melissa Shelby

KinFolk Family Health Center’s Values “At KinFolk Family Health, quality always outweighs quantity, which is why we deliver value-based, not volume-based care,” says Dr. Kai. “We build strong relationships with our patients, we create these bonds by providing each patient with affordable, patient-centered and community-focused health care. We provide a unique holistic nursing approach, which focuses on not only illness, but self-care, wellness and quality of life. The care that vulnerable communities deserve, but lack access.”

“He offers additional self-care options focusing on mind, body and spirit.”

There is a Gap in Primary Health Care: A Gap Nurse Practitioners Can Fill Due to the shortages in the number of doctors choosing a career in primary care, the number of physicians available to replace retiring primary care providers is lacking. However, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners® (AANP), estimates there are more than 270,000+ licensed Nurse Practitioners in the U.S. As the physician shortage continues, Nurse Practitioners have answered the call. Licensed Nurse Practitioners have been providing primary, specialty and acute health care to people of all ages for more than 50 years. As a result, Nurse Practitioners are closing the gap being left by the limited number of physicians providing primary care and they are performing many of the same services. In collaboration with their physician colleagues, Nurse Practitioners ensure patients have competent quality care and receive appropriate treatment in a timely manner – a hallmark of KinFolk Family Health. The Direct Primary Care (DPC) Payment Model Kinfolk Family Health offers the Direct Primary Care Payment model. With this payment model, claims are not sent to insurance providers; instead, a DPC payment arrangement is made between the patient and KinFolk Family Health. To par-

ticipate in our DPC model, patients must be at least 18 years of age. Upon joining the Kinfolk Family, the patient pays a flat monthly membership premium and receives unlimited office and Telehealth visits, requiring no co-pays or deductibles, and much more. The monthly premium an individual pays is determined by age: 18-29: $79.99 30-49: $89.99 50+: $99.99 65+ (Medicare Non-Eligible): $139.99 65+ (Medicare Non-Eligible): $139.99 Health Insured (All Ages): $39.99 Dr. Kai wants to ensure his members are covered for not only their primary care needs, but for those unexpected medical events causing significant financial burden and strain on families. As a result, KinFolk Family Health partnered with Sedera Health, a medical cost-sharing community. Enrolling in KinFolk membership plan offers the option to add a Sedera Health plan to cover the larger healthcare needs at approximately half the cost of traditional insurance. Dr. Kai believes everyone should have access to affordable and quality whole-person focused healthcare, which is why he offers additional self-care options focusing on mind, body and spirit such as monthly acupuncture and massage therapy sessions. Unfortunately, health insurance and self-care services are not always accessible for vulnerable communities. In response, Dr. Kai has developed an affordable and innovative healthcare delivery model to provide patient-directed medical care at a lower cost, start-to-finish. KinFolk Family Health is also an excellent option for the self-employed, entrepreneurs, and small business owners who want to offer quality affordable healthcare to their employees. Health care services are delivered by Board Certified KinFolk Family Health Nurse Practitioners. Also, patients who are in the military and/or a student receive a 15 percent discount (School ID and/or Proof of Military Status Required). The Pinhole Surgical Technique is Used to Treat Gum Recession The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique, also known as Pinhole® Gum Rejuvenation™, was invented and patented by John Chao, D.D.S.

P

eriodontal disease (gum disease) is an inflammatory condition affecting the periodontal tissues that are responsible for supporting the teeth. Once the initial stage of gum disease, which is referred to as gingivitis, develops, seeking treatment is essential; otherwise, gingivitis may progress to the more severe form of the disease, periodontitis. If periodontitis develops, the gums may begin to recede. The good news is that advancements in Periodontics have led to the creation of innovative procedures like the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST), which is a minimally-invasive treatment available in Northern New Jersey that is specifically designed to treat gum recession. How Gum Disease Develops Daily brushing and flossing removes plaque, a sticky biofilm full of bacteria, that is continually accumulating on the teeth. If plaque is not removed, the gums become irritated, inflamed and tender: These are the symptoms of gingivitis. Furthermore, if plaque is not removed within 24 to 72 hours, it hardens into tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional. As gum disease advances, the tartar that has accumulated causes pockets to form between the teeth and gums. These pockets fill with bacteria. The bacteria multiply and the periodontal tissues supporting the teeth are sustaining damage. This ongoing damage leads to gum recession and the roots become visible: Gum recession may affect one tooth or many teeth. Traditional Surgeries to Treat Gum Recession Gingival Graft - During this procedure, tissue grafts are used to reinforce areas where the gums have thinned or to fill in areas where recession has occurred. These tissue grafts are usually taken from the roof of the patient’s mouth. Problems with color variances between the graft and gum are common. Subepithelial Connective Tissue Graft (SCTG) - With the SCTG, color matching is improved because the tissue is obtained from beneath a flap cut into the roof of the mouth.

18

www.hwfessex.com

“With the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique, multiple teeth can be addressed during a single session.” Pedicle Graft - A flap of gum tissue that is near the exposed root is cut, with one corner remaining attached. The gum flap is pulled over the exposed root and stitched into place. Tunnel Techniques - With tunnel techniques, multiple areas of recession can be treated on adjoining teeth, but incisions and stitches are still required. Drawbacks to Traditional Gum Recession Procedures Only one or two teeth can usually be treated at a time and graft procedures are quite painful, some more than others. Furthermore, a single session can cost anywhere from $600 to $1,200. The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique None of the previous procedures can compare to the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique. This innovative method was invented and patented by John Chao, DDS, MAGD, and offers the patient a procedure for addressing a receding gumline that does not require incisions or sutures. Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation involves using specially-designed dental instruments to create a tiny hole in the gingival tissue. The tissue is gently loosened and then slid over to cover the exposed root. Patients experience very little pain, inflammation and bleeding following the PST. Furthermore, most patients are surprised at how this procedure instantly improves the look of their smile. With the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique, multiple teeth can be addressed during a single session. Of course, cost varies and depends on the severity of the recession; however, for most patients, since more teeth can be addressed during one Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation session, this innovative procedure is typically less expensive than the traditional treatments are.

DOCTORS ON A MISSION Medical Team Travels Across the Globe to Save Lives and Make A Difference

magine you or your child require immediate medical attention. You live 80 miles from the nearest hospital or clinic: no public transportation, no car, no Uber. Now imagine the clinic is only open one day a week and doesn’t have the equipment necessary to diagnose or treat you or your child’s condition. While many Americans live with the everyday inconvenience of living 2 to 5 miles from the nearest hospital or medical facility, most can expect to receive care that utilizes advanced, state-of-the-art, and evidence-based techniques and technologies. Across the globe, however, millions of people must travel significantly farther to seek help—only to receive less ad-

vanced and more standard medical care once they find a way to get there. Those living in remote parts of the world are the most affected, even when the rest of their country has access to high quality care. Unidad Hospitalaria Movil Latino America (UHMLA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization sending doctors, surgeons, nurses, and other medical professionals to remote villages in Central and South America. Their mission? To provide life-saving care to people who face socioeconomic and geographical barriers to medical care. UHMLA co-founder Dr. Rolandl Rolandelli, MD, FACS, is the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Morristown Medical Center. He cites personal ties to Latin America as a

main inspiration for creating the nonprofit. He was born in Argentina. Another UHMLA board member and co-fonder of UHMLA is Dr. William Diehl, was born in Mexico. Dr. Rolandelli has also traveled extensively to Latin America throughout his career. His background and experience has helped him “realize the need there” for improved access to higher quality medical care in these parts of the world. Practicality and sustainability also played a role in UHMLA’s origins. Dr. Rolandelli says, “we have access here to [medical] supplies that sometimes are no longer used, and there’s so much we discard. It’s good to be able to use it elsewhere.” Recently, UHMLA took their surgical skills to Yantaló, Peru. Like many rural residents of Central and South American countries, the people living in remote areas of Peru do not have access to amenities enjoyed by the majority of North Americans. Many work as manual laborers and must walk great distances for work, school, or necessities. Accessing medical care is a hardship, and illnesses and injuries can make an already difficult life even more challenging. The doctors and volunteers of UHMLA (in English: Latin America Mobile Hospital Unit) have now made multiple trips to this country with the goal of helping these people receive the care they need. Services are provided in mobile units—outfitted trucks and trailers—that travel to different communities in order to make contact with a greater number of people. It’s worth noting that UHMLA doctors pay their own way for each trip, which can cost as much as $35,000 to $45,000. The team also must bring all the supplies they need, since ultrasound and other equipment are often scarce or non-existent in the areas in which they operate. To help offset the cost of the trip for nurses and residents, UHMLA provides scholarships and holds additional fundraisers. Other organizations, including pharmaceutical companies, also donate supplies and equipment. Is the outreach worth the inevitable challenges and hefty investment of resources? Dr. Michael W. Kuchera, is an attending physician at Morristown Medical Center and UHMLA board member, has no doubt that it is. “I am constantly humbled by patients and family members thanking and praying for me for leaving my home and family to help. I am grateful to have the time as well as skill set to help those much less fortunate.” Dr. Kuchera became involved in UHMLA after meeting Dr. Diehl and Dr. Rolandelli during the organization’s early stages. The nonprofit was a perfect outlet to fulfill his desire to use his surgical skills in Latin America. Since joining forces with UHMLA, Dr. Kuchera has completed five trips performing gynecological surgeries in Guatemala, Honduras, and Peru. Dr. Zubin M. Bamboat, MD, FACS, is Director of General Surgical Oncology at Summit Medical Group in New Jersey. (Summit Medical Group is the largest private multi-specialty group in the United States. Comprised of more than 900 medical providers including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, and physician assistants, Summit Medical provides a full range of medical and surgical care.) Dr. Bamboat is also a credentialed surgical oncologist at Morristown Medical Center. His expertise is in minimally invasive techniques used to treat patients with tumors and cancers of the skin, esophagus, pancreas, stomach, liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, small intestine, colon and rectum. He led UHMLA’s most recent venture to Yantaló. In the short time they were there, the team performed over 50 surgeries. As many as 70 surgeries per week is not out of the ordinary for this hard-working group. Keep in mind, these interventions are done in mobile units, in remote areas of foreign countries, with limited access to the amenities and supplies that are par for the course in American hospitals. Among the patients he has seen on his Peruvian trips, Dr. Bamboat recalls a 34-year-old man for Lynch syndrome, also known as hereditary Continue on p 51

chatted with Leilah and David Tyree about their new business adventure, “Tyree Nation,” (comprised of seven children), their 15-year strong marriage, and their love of all things healthy. What I expected was a story about juice, but what I got from this dynamic duo was their desire to serve the Morristown community with excellence and a servant’s heart.

something we live. It’s great to be a part of other people’s story in some way. At home, juicing is very complicated because you have to go to the store so often, and the ingredients are everything. At Clean Juice, we make it simple for people to get quality, organic nutrition on the go. We are excited to jump in and be a part of an emerging community of health-oriented people in Morristown.” she said.

David, a former NFL player most notable for his famous “Helmet Catch” while playing for the Giants, was quick to point out that his greatest catch was Leilah. He added, “sports has generated a lot of provision, favor, and blessing, and I considered how the decisions I make in all areas of life, including stepping into an entrepreneurial space, can pave a pathway and set an example for the people I have the privilege of serving, mentoring, and loving, to realize all facets of opportunity.”

Seasonal menus, freshly made in-store juices, acai bowls, nutritious toast, and a fully stocked refrigerator of Cold-Pressed, premade juices, ensure optimal nutrition is truly “grab and go.” The Cold Pressed juices last three to five days, and preserve the highest level of enzyme and nutrient value, not being exposed to heat pasteurization like other pre-bottled juices. There is something for everyone at Clean Juice, Morristown. Located across from the Library at 68 South Street in Morristown, the Tyrees should be ready to go just in time to kick off a healthy 2020!

They fell in love with the Clean Juice model while visiting friends in North Carolina during a 15-day cleanse. Committed to finishing strong by finding a local juice store, they arrived at Clean Juice, and David was impressed. From the inviting layout, staff, and experience, it inspired him to learn more about the company. The “marriage” came when solid branding and great product merged with the uncompromising values both the company and the Tyrees share. The Original Certified, Non-GMO franchise concept, Clean Juice, ensures their products and quality are held to the highest standards. David believes in pushing the bar as high as possible while educating and empowering people to see the value in placing a premium on essential things like nutrition and health.

“ We are going to work to lead, serve, and train our staff in a manner that carries the same spirit of loving people — to have a sense of care and desire to help people just because they are amazing. That’s what life is all about, servant-leadership. A sense of community can contribute to a longer life, and we hope that us being there will provide health to Morristown.” It looks like Leilah and David Tyree will be serving up much more than smoothies at Clean Juice, Morristown! New York Giants David Tyree Superbowl XLII

At the helm is Leilah, committed to a lifestyle of health and wellness since her nursing school days. Knowing the desire most of us have to develop better habits, she has an unbridled passion for building and mentoring people. “Clean Juice allows us to build up people because we can interact through the selling of juices and bowls, and we can get behind it because it’s

ity of my practice. I love what I do says Dr. Rafizadeh, “I enjoy interacting with my patients very much.” “I am fortunate to be in perfect health and be able to enjoy what I am passionate about.” I keep physically active with tennis almost every day, eat well and exercise. I also keep my workload under control and only do what I truly enjoy and what gives me the most satisfaction.” According to Dr. Rafizadeh he has two primary focuses when it comes to plastic surgery. First, obtaining great results and having satisfied patients is a constant positive reinforcement. Second, sticking to doing what really works and staying away from methods that produce minimal and questionable results, where it is hard to tell the difference between before and after the procedure. There are non-invasive techniques that really work. Things like Botox and Dysport reduce active, muscle related wrinkles and raise the eyebrows or the corners of the mouth. Fillers like Restylane and Radiesse restore lost volume in the face and fill certain furrows. Education and Background Dr. Rafizadeh completed his pre-medical degree at Neuchatel University in Switzerland before graduating with his medical degree from Lausanne School of Medicine in Switzerland. He then came to the U.S. for postgraduate training, including a General Surgery residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and Chief Residency at Morristown Memorial Hospital. To further advance his training, Dr. Rafizadeh completed a fellowship in Plastic Surgery at New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center (New York Presbyterian) and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Honors and Awards Dr. Rafizadeh has been recognized year after year by multiple publications as a “Top Doctor” and “Top Surgeon” in the New Jersey and New York Metropolitan areas. In 2010, he was the recipient of the exclusive Patient Choice Award and the Compassionate Doctor Award.

Dr. Rafizadeh has been performing plastic and reconstructive surgery since 1984 from his Morristown office.

My practice has evolved of the years says Dr. Rafizadeh. “It started with reconstructive plastic surgery that included major facial trauma and maxillofacial fractures before airbags became a standard feature in cars, then I was very busy with breast reconstruction after mastectomy, popularizing the living tissue (TRAM flap) breast reconstruction.” Cosmetic surgery of the face, breast, and body has always been a big part of my practice and today, it has become the total-

The right judgements and decisions come naturally, and positive responses from patients make my work pleasurable.” I especially enjoy performing facial rejuvenation, with procedures such as face and neck lifts serving as the foundation for a younger face. These surgeries are often combined with upper and lower eyelid surgery to get rid of bags and loose skin. Brow lifts are important to keep the overall facial harmony and balance. plastic surgeons didn’t know it was a viable option and discouraged patients from doing it. He played a role in making this operation popular nationwide. Dr. Rafizadeh educates patients about the procedure, and he has received great reviews on sites like Realself, where he was honored with a 100/500 Hall Of Fame Award. I have made my facial surgery as safe and minimally invasive as possible, performing 95% of the cases under local anesthesia with moderate sedation in the operating room with a specialized monitoring nurse. I believe this is the most effective and safest way to do facial plastic surgery and is the way of the future. These operations are the gold standard of facial rejuvenation surgery and will always remain the best option for anyone who is serious about making a difference in their looks. Additionally, fat grafting to the face regenerates the lost volume and helps to get more natural and youthful results. Safety is the number one concern. This is why I introduced the Ideal Implant as an alternative to silicone implants to our area a few years ago. This is a saline implant with an internal layered structure that makes it feel like silicone, yet it offers the safety and the peace of mind of a saline implant, not requiring an MRI every two years to rule out a silent rupture. Arm lifts, tummy tucks, and liposuction are the other routine procedures that I do. I truly believe that using my 35 years of experience in plastic surgery allows me to offer values to my patients that are hard to beat.

Tips

1

Deep Breathing

Deep breathing does more than just relieve stress. It oxygenates the blood and allows you to think more clearly. When you start to feel a little tired or overwhelmed, sit back and take two or three long deep breaths. Inhale and exhale slowly allowing your lungs to fill to capacity.

2

Water First!

We need water to keep our bodies running smoothly. How much is enough? At least one third to one half your body weight in fluid ounces per day. Here’s a hydration hack: drink one glass of water first thing every morning. It’ll energize you and replenish the water you perspired or exhaled while sleeping. Add a pinch of sea salt for extra electrolytes!

3

Self-Care

Take a few minutes every day for self-care. Getting lost in the hustle and bustle of the day means stressing your mind and body. Take a bubble bath or sit on the patio with a cup of hot tea and let your stress fade away. Do what you need to do to care for your “self”.

4

Stand Up for Your Health

Did you know that sitting for 6-8 hours per day is associated with an increased risk of chronic illness and early death—regardless of how much you exercise? In other words, regular workouts don’t offset the negative effects of sitting too much. Get out of your seat and on your feet at least once to twice an hour, and try an adjustable sit to stand desk at work.

5

Epsom Salts Bath

Put a small amount of Epsom salts in the bottom of the tub when you take a bath or shower. As they mix with the water, they will begin to draw toxins from your body. Epson salts that have been mixed with lavender essential oils, will allow you to relax and de-stress after a long day.

7

Remember to Breathe

When you are under stress, there are times when you will forget to breathe normally. Short, shallow breaths deprive the body and brain of oxygen. As soon as you start to feel a little overwhelmed, remember to breathe as normally as possible. You will be able to think more clearly.

8

Practice Proper Form

It’s motivating when you can start lifting more weight in your gym routine. But if you’re not using proper form during your exercises, you’re only teaching yourself poor habits and increasing your risk of a sidelining injury at the same time. Be patient and take the time to learn good body mechanics.

Stop Saying “No”

The more we say “No”, the more negativity we create for ourselves. Instead of saying “no” to the things you want to do, say “yes” and allow yourself the freedom to have a little fun or experience something new. Allow yourself to enjoy your life instead of always restricting yourself.

10

Minimize Blue Light Exposure

Blue light from television screens, phones, tablets, and computers can disrupt your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle and make it harder for you to fall asleep and stay asleep. Reduce your exposure in the evening by powering down digital devices at least an hour before bed, use “night mode” on your phone, and install bluelight filtering apps.

11

Smile!!

Smile at a stranger! Look at pictures of your children and grandchildren and think of the joy they bring to your life and let your smile show your gratitude. Smile at everyone you meet! A smile is contagious and will pass along like wildfire if it is genuine and sincere.

6

Floss

Poor oral health isn’t just bad for your teeth—it can increase your risk for heart disease and Alzheimer’s. This is because bacteria in your mouth can leech into the bloodstream through damaged gums and teeth and spread to other organs in your body. Flossing is an essential habit that removes plaque and tartar (aka bacteria homes). Even a few days a week is better than nothing.

ing on a “diet”, learn to eat healthily. Cut your portions but still allow for that small piece of cake. Cut out sugar and add more veggies. Take the stress out of your diet by simply eating healthier.

16

Time Outside

Spend more time outside. Soaking up the sun’s rays (in moderation, of course) provides much-needed nutrients and breathing in the fresh air clears the mind and allows you to relax. Listen to the sound of the birds and other animals as they go about their day. It’s a symphony played just for you!

12

Invest in Quality Supplements

Modern day agricultural practices are tough on our food—long distance travel, soil depletion, radiation, factory farming, and other factors deplete the amount of nutrients in the things we eat. But going 100% organic may not be feasible nor possible. Taking a few high quality supplements can make up for the unavoidable holes in your nutrition and act as an extra insurance policy to protect your health. Talk to your doctor about which supplements are best for you—top ones include omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and Vitamin D3.

HUG YOUR KIDS

Hug your kids! Hug your parents! It’s been proven that hugging helps to ease tension and stress. It also makes the person feel loved and appreciated. Teach your kids the value of a hug and share them often!

13

Laugh Often

Laugh out loud! Laugh as often as you can. Share a joke with your friends or co-workers. Science has proven that laughing a few minutes every day offers a variety of health benefits. Share a video of your favorite comedian with your family. Let them share in the festivities.

14

Try Red Light Therapy

Multiple clinical studies show that infrared and near-infrared light stimulate increased cellular repair and metabolism through a process called “photobiomodulation.” Reported benefits include faster wound healing, reduced joint inflammation, increased collagen production, increased sex drive, and a reduction in fine lines, wrinkles, and scars.

15

Don’t Diet!

Dieting is stressful and can cause you to overthink everything you are doing to lose weight. Instead of go-

Volunteer

Volunteering your time, money, and unique skills isn’t just good for your community. It’s great for your mental health, too, because it fosters a sense of connectedness and generosity. Plus, it’s a great way to build deeper social connections. Find an organization you care about and ask how you can help!

18

Smell the Flowers

It’s the little things. Take the time to smell the flowers. Take a deep breath and smell the rain after a thunderstorm. These are the little things we often take for granted. The fragrances of flowers have the same effect as essential oils used in aromatherapy. Smell the aromas and let your mind relax.

19

Don’t Neglect Your Warm-Up

An effective warm-up doesn’t need to take more than five minutes, but it’ll make a huge difference for your workout. Warm-ups reduce the risk of injury and can even improve your performance since you won’t have to spend the first few minutes of your workout just trying to get your heart rate up! Focus on dynamic movements that get your blood pumping and arms and legs limber.

20

Be Grateful

Many times we rush through life, overlooking the things that are most important to us. Look at your children and your grandchildren. Be grateful for the things that make you smile. Celebrate accomplishments and throw a party just because. Take a step back and be grateful for the things you cherish.

21

Meditate

Meditation is popular these days for a reason—it works! Studies show that people who meditate regularly see improvements in their mood, stress, focus, creativity, and even blood pressure. The trick is to find a style you like and practice daily, even for just ten minutes. Try using a meditation app to help you build the habit. www.hwfessex.com

22

Unclutter Yourself

Unclutter yourself by clearing out the things in your home that you no longer use or need. Do the same with your thoughts. If you find yourself thinking negative thoughts, replace them with positive ones. Eliminate things that no longer serve a purpose and bring in new things that bring you joy and happiness.

29

Hug Your Kids

Hug your kids! Hug your parents! It’s been proven that hugging helps to ease tension and stress. It also makes the person feel loved and appreciated. Teach your kids the value of a hug and share them often!

23

Walk Barefoot

Walk barefoot in the dirt. The soil has a grounding effect and will draw out negative energy that you carry within your body. Not only does it clear away negativity, it replaces it with positive energy that is drawn up through the soles of the feet, balancing the body and mind.

24

Add Lemon

ADD LEMON

Add a slice of lemon to your water or tea. Lemon contains a host of nutrients including Vitamin C. Lemons support better digestion and fend off bad breath. Adding lemons to your water also helps to support good kidney function and keep kidney stones at bay.

25

Be Mindful

Always be mindful of your surroundings. Raising your awareness not only keeps you safe, it allows you to see small issues before they become bigger problems. Mindfulness benefits both physical and mental health and allows you to be more efficient at problem-solving.

31

27

32

When you start to get upset or overwhelmed, take a break and go for a short walk. It allows you to collect your thoughts and will help you to keep your emotions under control. Breathing in some fresh air will also help you to concentrate on the situation.

Take a Drive

Take a drive in the country. Windows down and music turned up is a great way to let your stress dissipate in the wind. Enjoy the sunset on a warm summer night or get up early and take a drive to the beach to watch the sunrise. Either way, it’s a great way to spend time with someone you love.

28

Dance, Dance, Dance!

Dancing is the best form of exercise. You can do it when you are cooking, cleaning your house, or playing with your kids. It burns calories and will get your heart pumping. Learn a few new dance moves and use them when you are running the vacuum or dusting.

www.hwfessex.com

Try something new! Challenge yourself with a new exercise like CrossFit or Tai Chi. If you are used to doing cardio, change it up and try Pilates or Yoga. Keep your body guessing and it will take longer for you to hit a weight loss plateau. It will also give you extra energy and a sense of accomplishment once you have it mastered.

Color Your Dinner

Include as many colors as possible on your dinner plate. Every colorful food from red tomatoes to purple eggplants are full of nutrients. Each color is known to include specific nutrients. Add as many as you can for a healthy and delicious dinner that’s full of nutrients.

Allow Yourself to BE

Allow yourself to simply BE. Be yourself. There is only one you and no one can replace you or offer the same gifts you can. Learn to love who and what you are. Learn to simply be your one and only true “self”.

33Pay Yourself First

It’s tempting to take care of your bills and living expenses without leaving enough money left over to build your net worth. Don’t neglect yourself—you’re your greatest asset! Invest in your mental and financial well-being by earmarking a percentage of every paycheck for your own personal savings or investment. Start small—even just 1 or 3%—and automate the process to take emotion out of it. www.hwfessex.com

34

Don’t Ignore Nagging Pains

If a small nagging injury doesn’t go away on its own after a week or two, don’t neglect it—otherwise, it could turn into a bigger (and more costly) problem in the future. Talk to a doctor, physical therapist, or other healthcare professional who can offer guidance and help you resolve the issue.

35

Detoxify Your Social Media

What kind of content fills your social media feeds? Is it empowering messages from people and businesses who inspire you? Or is it complaints and negativity? Be mindful of the content you’re consuming on a daily basis, and unfollow anyone who leaves you feeling down for any reason.

36

Set the Bar Lower

Having goals provides a great framework for a meaningful life. But if your goals are too big, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by them, which can cause you to give up earlier. Prime yourself for success by setting the bar lower and chunking down your goals into smaller, easy-to-manage steps. Achieving them brings you the psychological wins needed to stay disciplined as you move closer to your ultimate aim.

37

Brush Up on Sleep Hygiene

Getting enough quality Zzz’s every night (8 hours for most of us) helps you stay healthy and live longer. Sleep even helps you lose weight and keep it off! Get a better night’s rest by practicing good sleep hygiene, which includes: sleeping in a cool dark room (no night lights) and going to bed and waking up at the same time every day.

39

Reflect on Your Mortality

It’s so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day hustle and bustle. But if you’re just running through the motions, are you really able to appreciate the present moment? While it may seem morose, periodically reflecting on your death (and the death of everyone you know and love) will stop you from taking things for granted. In Stoic philosophy, this concept is known as “memento mori” (“remember that you will die”).

40

Be a Hometown Tourist

You don’t have to spend a lot of money or travel many miles to explore! Spend a day experiencing your town as if you’re just a visitor. Visit a museum, have a picnic in the park, or stop by that new coffee shop. You’ll feel invigorated by the fresh change in perspective.

41

Hit Up a Farmer’s Market

A farmer’s market is the place to go for local, fresh, and nutritious produce. Support your local community and let yourself feel inspired by new foods.

42

Stay Strong

Your muscles don’t just help you move. They also influence blood sugar levels, body temperature, hormone regulation, and other biological processes that are essential for health and longevity. Unfortunately, age-related muscle wasting is a major issue faced by older adults. Improve your health now and protect your future well-being by building and fueling strong muscles.

43

Take Care of Your Gut

The friendly bacteria living in your digestive tract help you digest your food, absorb nutrients, and even support your immune system. That’s why poor gut health has been linked to everything from cancer to dementia. These bacteria so important that they’ve been called the “forgotten organ.” Boost your gut health by exercising, reducing stress, and avoiding inflammatory foods like gluten, dairy, and sugar.

38

End the Comparison Game

Constantly comparing yourself to other people is a recipe for stress and suffering. Remember that everyone is on their own path in life, and the only person you need to compare yourself to is the person you were yesterday, last week, last year. Are you better off now than you were then? Use yourself—not other people—as your measuring stick.

he standard of health, comfort, and happiness rests in our ability to move. Supported by our bones, joints, and muscles, we enjoy physical activities such as walking, running, bicycling, and hiking to enhance our quality of life. As we age, joints and muscles become shortened, inflexible, and tight. This may trigger stiffness, muscle strain, joint and back pain, nerve damage and increased risk of physical injury. Warming up and stretching is a proactive preventative method in our toolbox. Annually, musculoskeletal injuries impact corporate and healthcare industries in excess of $20 billion. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) approximates that indirect and associated costs that include hiring, training, and subsidizing substitute employees add five times to the baseline expense. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by 2020, 25% of workers will be 55 years of age or older. Therefore, strategies including regular home and workplace stretching programs are gaining momentum and merit. In view of this, people are turning to activities that include Yoga, Cross Fit, Trainer, Pilates, and Stretch Studios to improve their flexibility, fitness, and overall physical and mental health. What is Stretch Studio and how can it help your flexibility? Stretch studios are the antidote to high-intensity workouts. Research supports the short and long-term benefits of daily stretching. It alleviates strain on overworked muscles, makes moving easier, lessens stress and injury risk, and improves sleep. Stretching for flexibility is not the only benefit. Other advantages include • Decreases stress • Diminishes pain and stiffness

Static stretching, dynamic stretching, and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) are additional forms of value in a stretching program. According to David Nolan, a physical therapist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, engaging in regular stretching keeps muscles lean, long, and flexible. This prevents the exertion of excessive force on the muscle and protects independence and mobility. www.hwfessex.com

Kika

Stretch Studio How it all started

M

s. Hakika V. DuBose, aka, Kika started her first Stretch Studio on May 2011 in Manhattan. Kika, a former professional actor and dancer with many years of experience, decided to leave her 9 to 5 job. She went the entrepreneurial way to afford her more time to be with her child. Kika’s education in dance from Montclair State, her work as a personal trainer, instruction in the Alexander technique, Laban movement analysis and advanced anatomy lay the foundation. Aware of an unmet need in the physical exercise market, she was determined to bridge the gap.

Kika Stretch Studio offer an assisted stretching program focused on releasing tension in the body, increasing flexibility and range of motion, and relieving stress and anxiety. The Kika Method is a gentle, passive, stretching technique that is centered on relaxation therapy for optimal results. It is essentially “The Dancers Approach to Stretching.” This boutique fitness franchise provides customized, one-on-one stretch sessions that caters to clients’ specific needs. Ms. Dubose started her first Stretch studio in a room shared with a real estate agent. She had a mat, a ball, and a dream. Within four years, her clientele to over 1,000 people. In addition to the Manhattan studio, she has three power stretch outposts in New Jersey and one in Florida. Her focus teaches clients how stretching delivers the body freedom they crave. Kiks’s objective is to help individuals become more flexible and release the years of locked up body tension. 40

www.hwfessex.com

Her wealth of experience in nutrition, body movement, and stretching, coupled with her Bachelor Degree in the Arts, reputation, and credibility, she expanded the KIKA method to professional bodybuilders. Compared to other fitness stretching programs, the KIKA Method of assisted stretching is the only method that integrates relaxation therapy and tension release. The KIKA Method® of assisted stretching was born. The KIKA Method® revolutionized the world of stretching. Her stretch coaches are thoroughly trained in her technique of unlocking flexibility. Kika also developed the Kika Stretch Years® a systematic method that allows you to measure and track your age in flexibility years. Profile of Eugene Jackson –Owner and General Manager of Stretching Studio Morristown, NJ franchise Eugene Jackson, BFA is a graduate of the Mason Gross School of the Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) focused in Dance Performance and Choreography from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey-New Brunswick. His knowledge of Kinesiology and Laban Movement Analysis guided him to a career in fitness, health, and wellness. As an experienced Fitness Coach with established credentials of working in the health, wellness, and fitness industry, he is skilled in Contemporary Dance, Improvisation, Ballet and Performing Arts. His understanding of jazz, tap, modern, ballet, and African dance coupled with the help of his high school and college dance instructors maintained the ‘ideal’ flexibility needed as a dancer. However, according to Eugene, he failed to support his body by allowing the lessons he learned to slip by, resulting in painful injuries. This awareness motivated him to take up a career as a fitness instructor with a view to help people maintain their body shape by improving their flexibility and ultimately their fitness. Through a mutual friend, Leilah, he met with Hakika, the founder of Stretch Studio. The available Morristown Stretch Studio ownership opportunity, matched Eugene’s vision. Shortly thereafter, he became a Franchise Business Owner of Kika Stretch Studios Morristown and Certified Fitness Professional.

STRETCHLAB

stretch ng S

tretchLab isn’t like other health and fitness clubs. It takes the ancient art of stretching, redefines it, and makes it personal and unique. Each person’s body is different, and each stretching routine should be different, too. By finding ways to address imbalances, tension, and other physical causes of discomfort, you can reclaim freedom, ease of motion, and joy in your life. What Can StretchLab Do for You? If you really want to be actively engaged in your life, StretchLab can help you do just that. The company’s philosophy is based on making people more flexible and helping them prevent injuries. With proper stretching that’s tailor-made for them, they’ll have fewer injuries and less pain to worry about. “We don’t always realize it, but our bodies hold every experience and habit that we have had in life. This can result in congestion and blockages that lead to inflexibility, pain, and in worse cases structural degeneration. The good thing is that because the muscles have memory, the more proactive and consistent one can be, the better the results. With proper stretching that’s tailor-made for them, they’ll have fewer injuries and less pain to worry about. The First StretchLab Franchise in the World Dave Weaving, Stretch Lab Franchise owner opened the first Stretch Lab franchise in the world in Livingston, NJ. There were already three company-owned studios in California, but Weaving opened the first franchise. Besides Livingston, StretchLab is scheduled to open in Morristown this summer; and Weaving expects to open more in the area.

He’s really enjoying it, and so are the people in his franchise area. Stretch Lab offers clients the opportunity to stretch the way it should be done. StretchLab takes traditional stretching a step further by applying resistance to receive a deeper stretch, as well as utilizing the PNF technique (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation), which effectively increases range of motion by systematically contracting and releasing targeted muscle groups. All of StretchLab’s Flexologists have prior relevant certifications before entering the Flexology Training Program. With diverse backgrounds such as Massage Therapy, Personal Training, Physical Therapy, advanced Yoga experience or degrees in Exercise Science, Weaving’s staff can safely cater to a multitude of imbalances. Prior to opening his StretchLab franchise, Weaving worked at a franchise company called Realogy that showed him there was a market for benefits and wellness, as he suddenly had the opportunity for developing a wellness initiative. He started this initiative for 11,000 people at his company which resulted in greater health outcomes for his employees. After retiring, he was looking for a new challenge. After ample research and due diligence, he came across StretchLab. It made sense as a business model, and he also believed in the power and value of stretching. Xponential Fitness owns StretchLab, and Weaving did his diligent research into both companies before he decided to take the plunge. His daughter pointed out to him that he’s always telling her “Don’t be like me, keep stretching”, so he signed the paperwork and opened the first franchise in the world. www.hwfessex.com

Morristown’s Hidden Gem The Morristown Neighborhood House

THE NABE By Sharon M. Cirillo

M

orristown stands as the heart and soul of one of the most culturally diverse towns in Morris County. Behind the “Green” which boasts high rises, boutique shops, and fine eateries, is an area in need of great assistance. The Morristown Neighborhood House has been a beacon of light serving these residents with programs supporting physical, educational, emotional and social health and wellness for decades. The “Nabe,” as it is affectionately called by all those who know and love it, is a “home away from home” for so many in the community. At the Nabe and other Cornerstone locations, “we proudly serve children, teens, adults, families, veterans, seniors, and their caregivers, ages two to 102.” This once thriving center is making a strong comeback thanks to some strategic partnerships and support of local businesses and other non-profit organizations. The push to polish this hidden gem is on, with support from the senior leadership and board of Cornerstone Family Programs, spearheaded by its COO Ayo Sanderson Wilson and her team since January. Thanks to volunteers, businesses like J&S Flooring and CertaPro Painting of Morristown, the “Toddler Room,” “Staff/Teen Lounge,” lobby and hallways got well-needed upgrades. However, so much more needs to be done. The “House to Home Initiative” is underway intending to refurbish well-worn spaces in need of renovation, some of which serve dual purposes. Surrounded by the affordable housing on Flagler Street, the income-based subsidized programs offer much needed before and after-childcare for working parents. Children, dropped off as early as 7 am, are fed a nutritious breakfast, picked up by buses which take them to school and then back to the center until parents or guardians arrive after 5 pm.

“The mission is to see every child realize their full potential.” -Morristown Neighborhood House 42

STEM curriculums and college prep courses are offered taking high school students through every facet of the admissions process. From FAFSA filing, SAT/ ACT review to essay writing and applications, the staff shares expertise that makes the difference in the student’s chance of acceptance. Kids remain engaged, and homework is completed all while having access to the technology and resources they often do not have at home.

“The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.” Clinic for grades 3rd – 10th. For only $100.00 children from ALL surrounding towns can participate in the 16-week program. Reminiscent of the days when the “Nabe” was THE place to “Ball Out,” Coach Kenny Smith envisions kids from all ethnic and socioeconomic communities coming together again to play hoops.

Some famous NBA and NFL players have come up through the program, adding to the rich history and pride. Thanks to the recent National Basketball Players’ Association Foundation grant, the gym boasts a fresh new paint job, new equipment, and a spirit of infectious enthusiasm. A refurbished gym floor and new air conditioning are also underway. The program builds confidence, teaches teamwork, and offers much-needed mentorship. Ayo recounted the day she first visited the Nabe to give a speech on the Importance of Education in the gymnasium almost a decade ago and was “bitten by the bug.” Hoping to fulfill her challenge and calling to help others alongside her dedicated team, she wants to raise awareness of what this facility means to the families that it serves and attract others from surrounding areas as well. The mission is to see every child realize their full potential, quoting Mr. Spock from Star Trek “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.” For more information or a tour of the Morristown Neighborhood House, please contact Jackie Looby at jlooby@cfp-mnh. org to find out how you or your organization can help to make this multifaceted gem sparkle once again!

Munah I

By Sharon M. Cirillo

recently attended a Yoga class in Morristown taught by instructor Munah Hayes featuring “Munahology,” her own method of combining traditional Yoga with an ample dose of her unique spirituality, intuitive conversation, and beautiful music. Arriving early to get a spot, I chatted with the others in the class and noted the infectious enthusiasm and love they felt for her.

The moment she strode through the door, I understood what the fuss was about. Clad in her fur vest, large sunglasses and bold jewelry she breezed into the room like a movie star taking her place on the set. I jumped up to introduce myself, and she engulfed me with her warm and authentic embrace. What ensued was one of the most unique experiences I have had to date. Munah describes herself as a “curvaceous woman of color,” and she provides a “judgment-free space where people can come and unravel the deepest chambers of their hearts.” She presents the poses in layman’s terms, although it is apparent she understands the meaning and structure of each one, with over 250 hours in Yoga training from Ramapo College under her belt.

44

www.hwfessex.com

Combining a workout suitable for every level with modified poses, she speaks words of encouragement and edification paying close attention to proper alignment. She is so in tune with her class it transcends the physical exercise. For those who are open to it, the experience can be transformative as she feeds the soul while working the body. As we entered into final relaxation, I allowed the music to wash over me. I heard the most melodic voice humming and had to open my eyes. There was Munah, one with her music gracing us with her deep and soulful voice. I allowed myself to relax once again and soaked in what felt like praise and thanksgiving wafting from her heart. Instead of ending class with the traditional Ohm, we sang as a group, led by Munah. There was no awkwardness, just a group of peaceful, happy people singing about choosing joy. I hung around after class for a few minutes when a group from the Daily Plan-It came in. Munah beamed proudly introducing me to each person. Struggling with disabilities, this is the place they come to practice movement, be encouraged, and keep Munah grounded as she volunteers her time to serve each man and woman who participates. Some could walk, others were in wheelchairs, yet all of them arrived excited to be in a class led by someone so deeply invested in them. Munah also volunteers her time as a translator for Hayes Language Institute, owned and operated by her mother, Willa Hayes, and International Rivers of the Holy Spirit Ministries.

“Munah describes herself as a ‘curvaceous woman of color.’”

Munah struggled with many challenges in her own life, and she is driven to help “free others from the internal hells that are created by poor spiritual, emotional, mental and physical health.” She views herself as a servant of the community, cradling her students in love and getting back as much as she gives. She collaborates with The Morristown and Morris Township Library, Zufall Wellness Center, Morristown Neighborhood House, and the Interfaith Food Pantry in Morristown as well as the Rose House, in Cedar Knolls, Brahma House in Bridgewater and WARM in Harlem, NY. Focusing on discovering what one needs from the inside out, some of the services she provides include guided meditation sessions, public and private Yoga, Munahology Movement, Zumba, Fierce4, Health Coaching Consultations, and Sound Vibration Healing Sessions. For more information about this special lady, please visit www.Munahology.weebly.com or contact Munah at munahhayes@gmail.com.

’d like to lose weight and get into shape, and a friend recommended getting a personal trainer. Do I really need one?

My friend went on and on about the benefits of a certified personal trainer. They apparently have special expertise and advanced knowledge of general fitness, especially as it relates to human anatomy, exercise and nutrition. She said that personal trainers are able to design and execute exercise fitness programs for individuals and small groups. They can tailor the exercise programs to the needs and goals of each person they train, whether those goals focus on losing weight, building muscle mass, improving cardiovascular or overall health, or simply to move around more. She also said her personal trainer motivates and encourages her when she wants to quit.

But do I need all that? Maybe so. To help me decide, I have written down a few reasons I might need a personal trainer. 1. I’ve hit a plateau - I’m not reaching my goals. I’ve spent countless hours (and money) at the gym and exercising at home, and I’m not getting anywhere. I’m considering getting a personal trainer to assess my current program and look for ways to make it more effective and efficient. Maybe my trainer can help me determine if my goals are just unrealistic – I do tend to set my sights too high when it comes to losing weight and getting fit. 2. I don’t know where to start - I’m new to exercise and

6.

I didn’t realize how complex it is – there’s a lot more to it than doing a few sit ups and jogging around the block. I’m hoping a personal trainer can get me started on the right path. I don’t have a lot of time - I don’t want to waste a lot of time exercising – I have an actual life that involves work, taking care of my family, and doing the other stuff that normal people do. With any luck, a personal trainer can show me how to get results fast, without a lot of excess sweat. I’m already bored - Working out bores me to tears, but I know that boredom leads to workout ruts, which can then lead to plateaus, overuse injuries, and burnout. A personal trainer can bring a fresh perspective to my workout, and make exercise more fun. I need to be challenged and held accountable - It’s easy to slack off when I am by myself. My personal trainer can push me to try a little harder, challenge me to do more reps and encourage me to work a bit longer than I otherwise would. A personal trainer can hold me accountable – knowing that I have an appointment with a pro can help me stay on track inside and outside of the gym. I have specific needs - I’ve got a bad back and other conditions that could benefit from exercise, but can also make it hard to move around. My friends have suggested that a personal trainer could make me better at sports (thanks, guys!). I’m also hopeful that my personal trainer could help me run a marathon, which has been on my bucket list forever.

After quite a bit of consideration, I think I will get a personal trainer. Now I just have to decide which one. www.hwfessex.com

COACH

DAVID

“ALWAYS SET A NEW GOAL, THAT’S THE EASIEST TO ENSURE YOU’RE GETTING BETTER EVERY DAY.”

D

avid Jones grew up in Daytona Beach, FL, and relocated to Brooklyn, NY in pursuit of his dreams. David’s journey to personal fitness was anything but traditional. Personal challenges, such as the death of his mother left him shattered and looking for answers. He began to believe that everyone, including God, had given up on him. As a last ditch effort to survive, Jones applied for a janitorial position at a gym. The interviewer turned him down for the position, but only because she thought Jones would make a better trainer than janitor. The interviewer was right – from the first day, it was apparent that Jones was a natural trainer, even though he was obviously no athlete. In fact, people would call him “beer belly,” even when he was just a kid. he wasn’t quite sure he could inspire others to live their best lives when his life was anything but inspirational. David put his shoulder into the work, and it changed him, inside and out. He learned the elements of proper exercise, and began applying those elements of fitness to himself. Jones was especially interested in functional exercises that translate into a person’s life. He focused on weight loss, flexibility and mobility, core strengthening, corrective exercises and posture, stretching, foam rolling, injury prevention, and meditation and breathing techniques. 48

The exercise transitioned his body and his life. In a recent interview, he said, “Now people often approach me and ask how did I get my body to look as well as it does, and my answer is always the same, every morning, afternoon, and evening I tell my body thank you for never giving up on me.” “I know what it feels like when your goals seem impossible. I also know what it feels like to accomplish them”. When asked about the importance of physical fitness, Jones said, “Being physically fit is important to me, because it’s my way of showing God that I’m highly grateful for him never giving up on me, even when I gave up on him.” Today, David Jones works as a Personal Trainer and Therapist at Kika Stretch Studio, where he encourages others to rise above their personal challenges through physical fitness. He has his sight on becoming one of the industry’s top health and wellness motivational speakers. “We fail in life sometimes and that’s ok. What’s not ok is giving up, because there is always someone else depending on our success. Always set a new goal, that’s the easiest to ensure you’re getting better every day.”

Meet Morristown’s Own Fitness Professional,

JESSE Jeffers B

efore we introduce you to Jesse Jeffers, one of Morristown’s top certified fitness professionals, we’d like to congratulate him and his wife Kelly on the recent birth of their daughter, Harper Elizabeth Jeffers. Like his daughter, Jesse Jeffers was born in Morristown, NJ. While attending Morristown Beard High School, Jeffers excelled in sports. In fact, he competed in five sports – football, basketball, baseball, track, and lacrosse – which instilled in him a love of athletics and physical fitness. He left Morristown only long enough to earn a degree in Psychology and History at Gettysburg College, where he also played collegiate football. After college, Jeffers moved back to his hometown, where he continues to be an active member of the Morristown community. Today, he is the owner and CEO of Top Priority Fitness LLC, located at Boomerang Fitness in Morristown, NJ, where he shares his love and knowledge of physical fitness with others. Before starting his own company, Jeffers worked for seven years as a personal trainer at The Club at Headquarters Plaza. Top Priority Fitness has now been helping people in Morristown stay fit for more than four years. Over the years, Jesse has honed his skills as a fitness professional and developed an insightful philosophy about health and wellness. Jeffers has also earned a special place in

the world of fitness. This athlete has set USAPL Powerlifting World Records in lifting, for example, and has set numerous RPS World Records. Driven by his desire to share knowledge about fitness, Jesse earned NASM and ASMPT certification in training, and is Silver & Fit certified and NASM nutrition certified. His specialties are strength training, functional training, stress management, and nutrition. Jeffers also specializes in stress management workouts. He understands that eating and working out within an environment are the two fundamental challenges to bringing about healthy body changes, so he shares valuable information about nutrition and feeling comfortable in the workout environment. Jeffers also works hard to dispel myths about fitness. One of the most common misconceptions is that meaningful change will happen within a week; another myth is that nutrition is complicated. “Great things take time especially creating a healthier lifestyle. Another thing is over complicating a nutritional lifestyle. Make it simple.” Jesse Jeffers has developed his own personal philosophy about fitness and wellness: “I am all about being physically fit, but you have to be emotionally and mentally fit as well to obtain an overall healthy lifestyle. Just be a better version of yourself everyday with a positive outlook on life.” NO EXCUSES!!! www.hwfessex.com

non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), an inherited condition that raises the risk of cancer. The man was running for mayor of his town but was feeling too exhausted all the time, even after minimal exertion. As it turned out, the man had a large intestinal tumor that would require a surgery normally too complex for a mobile hospital. After weighing their options, the surgical team decided to perform the surgery because the man could not travel to the nearest hospital in Lima.

They invited the local doctor to observe the surgery and provide aftercare in the form of chemotherapy. Despite it being a complex procedure, the patient did well without narcotics, and took only acetaminophen for pain. The man’s good nature, stamina, and impressive recovery—despite not have the luxury of surgery in a hospital and narcotics for pain—made a lasting impression on the entire surgical team.

How does UHMLA select a location? Members of the board, including physicians and other medical professionals, vote on and approve proposed locations. Board members, including Dr. Bamboat and Dr. Rolandelli, will then lead the trips following UHMLA board approval. Making a connection with the local community and empowering local healthcare providers is essential to UHMLA’s success—and a smart move. After all, “You can’t can’t just show up in Peru and expect people lined up waiting to see you,” Dr. Bamboat says. “In each country, we need to have a reliable local consult.” This is especially important given that the group primarily performs surgeries, which typically require follow-up care long after UHMLA leaves. To ensure continuity of care, UHMLA makes contact with a local doctor or healthcare provider who can check in on the patient during the recovery phase. In addition to Peru, UHMLA has already provided care in Guatemala, Honduras, and Ecuador. What’s next for the nonprofit? “We’re hoping to go to other countries,” Dr. Bamboat says, including Argentina. Dr. Rolandalli echos this vision. He says that UHMLA is hoping to expand to more areas and have mobile units that can move from country to country in succession. “My goal is to keep adding locations and connect all those dots.” He also envisions the ability to fly medical personnel in and out to meet the mobile units for greater efficacy and safety. Are other hospitals primed to join in the UHMLA’s mission? “We would like to open the option for other [American] hospitals to participate,” says Dr. Rolandelli, many of which have expressed interest already. In the meantime, he along with Dr. Bamboat, Dr. Kuchera, Dr. and the rest of the team are honored to carry the banner and continue making meaningful connections with their global neighbors. On this most recent trip to Peru, Dr. Bamboat was thrilled to see the man he had operated on the year before. While the man did not win his bid for mayor, he was doing well after his surgery. This time, the man brought along his mother and older brother to the second visit, as both had abdominal tumors. Dr. Bamboat’s team performed successful surgery on the mother and was able to refer his brother for further treatment.
