Recent studies indicate Americans are trying to live a healthier lifestyle. Across the US we are seeing a decline in the number of new diabetes cases, obesity rates are falling, sugary soda consumption has dropped, the number of smokers has plummeted by 20% in the past 10 years, workplace wellness programs are spreading and 55.5% of Americans indicated they exercise frequently. We publish Health Wellness & Fitness (HWF) magazine to inform and support the upward momentum of Americans trying to live a healthier lifestyle. In pursuit of this changing lifestyle Americans continuously search for relevant and trustworthy local content, articles, advice, success stories, etc., on people and families facing similar challenges, as well as, qualified local providers to give them advice, direction, encouragement, inspiration and motivation. HWF magazine is niche publication targeted at the health conscious & curious, active and non-active, sick & healthy, novice and experienced health enthusiast, patients, families, doctors and health care professionals in each market we serve.

Architect Studios was born in 2010 with the intention of creating a place where anyone at any fitness level would be welcome and accepted but also pushed to their maximum. Over three years later, it’s grown into the hottest HIIT studio in New Jersey. Architect Studios has over 40 classes on the schedule that are all based on the H.I.I.T. formula. This simply means that you go to your maximum capacity for a set period of time. • • • • • • • •

Getting Your Mind Right:

The Importance of Maintaining Your Mental Health to Achieve Overall Wellness

W

By Natasha Manning-Gibbs, Ph.D.

hen you think about health and wellness do you consider your mental health? If you answered “no”, you are not alone. Western society typically equates wellness with physical aspects such as maintaining a proper diet and regular exercise. Although those dimensions of wellness play key roles in our health, it is important to also put an equal emphasis on our psyche. As a licensed psychologist, I have seen firsthand the negative impact of poor mental health on a person’s overall wellness. In my private practice, many clients have been referred for psychotherapy by their primary care physician due to their medical symptoms being exacerbated by psychological symptoms such as an overwhelming sense of sadness, unsubstantiated fear, or even regular temper outbursts. One such instance involved a young, middle-class woman with high blood pressure. As is the case for many clients, she reluctantly entered treatment despite her physician’s suggestion. She initially rationalized that psychotherapy was unnecessary due to being medication complaint and following her physician’s orders that included regular exercise and a healthy diet. As treatment progressed she became forthcoming about the stressors in her life and recognized that she previously made little effort to address their negative impact on her health. Her investment in therapy coupled with her medical treatment eventually rendered positive results. That particular case and many others demonstrate that medical conditions seen as solely biological are not fully treated until the mind-body connection is addressed.

Whether a person is attempting to rebound from high pressure or other medical conditions such as chronic pain, integrative care is ideal. However, why wait for a medical condition to arise before taking steps toward developing a healthy mind? Reflect on the last time you consciously created personal goals that enhanced or maintained good mental health? If your response indicates that it has been a while since you showed your psyche some attention, consider the following: • Think about an activity you once found enjoyable and uplifting and consider revisiting it. • Take 15 minutes to write down all the things for which you are grateful. • Select a guided meditation on YouTube and begin practicing twice a week. We have one life to live, make it glorious by making your mental health a priority.

How the American Lung Association is uniting women to stop Lung Cancer rates from rising

ulations should speak with their physician and insurer about the availability of conducting preliminary scans, for early stage warning signs. Brown went on to say, “It’s important to note that anyone can get lung cancer. Although smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer, other causes include exposure to Radon, hazardous chemicals and other particle pollution.” Knowing these truths, The American Lung Association offers several programs that bring awareness to their causes. A program called Freedom From Smoking ®, is one such program, proven to have helped hundreds of thousands of participants quit smoking for good and Fight For Our Air Climbing events highlight the importance and necessity of clean air to the health of our nation. The New Jersey chapter is even working with government officials to address the issues of tobacco use and prevention, by advocating for an increase the tobacco tax and to create tax parity between the tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products, to include electronic cigarettes; secure state tobacco prevention and cessation funding; and to increase the minimum age of sale for tobacco products to 21. Although the staggering statistics tell a grim tale, when we asked Dr. Paul about the outlook for Lung Cancer patients and their families he told us, “There is hope! The past five years have seen significant gains in the treatment of lung cancer: from chest CT screening, to the increased use of minimally-invasive surgery, to the development of new targeted therapies to immunotherapy. All these developments have improved the lives and survival of patients with lung cancer.” Knowing testing and developments in new therapies all take funding; the American Lung Association in New Jersey is promoting National Women’s Lung Health Week this May. National Women’s Lung Health Week is an annual event, focused on bringing awareness and sharing the voice of the vic-

tims and those fighting the disease. Turquoise Takeover is the theme to which the association connects with members in the communities they serve to help raise awareness of lung cancer in women. They ask that businesses and landmarks turn their signature turquoise color. Groups can also decide to make a donation and turn their social media profiles turquoise using the hashtag #TurquoiseTakeOver to show and share their support with friends and family members. If you or someone you care about is affected by this disease, there are so many ways to get involved and help bring awareness to Lung Cancer. Call the LUNG HELPLINE 1-800-LUNGUSA (1-800-586-4872), Visit www.lung.org, follow the ALA on Facebook and Twitter: @AmericanLungNJ or on Instagram @LungMidAtlantic. Or participate in one of the LUNG FORCE Expos or Walks held throughout the country.

L

ung Cancer is the leading cause of Cancer related deaths for women in the United States today. Once thought of as a disease of smokers, according to Dr. Subroto Paul, Director of Thoracic Surgery at RWJBarnabas Health and Clinical Professor of Surgery at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, “Up to twenty percent of women who develop lung cancer have never touched a cigarette. Women treated with radiation therapy for breast cancer (or lymphoma), are also at greater risk for developing lung cancer.” Looking to shine light on this brutal disease that claims the lives of so many women, the American Lung Association launched the LUNG FORCE campaign in May 2014. Deb Brown, President and CEO of the American Lung Association of the Mid-Atlantic shared with us, the focus of LUNG FORCE is to “Increase women’s awareness of Lung Cancer as their No. 1 cancer killer, to educate and empower patients and healthcare providers, and raise critical funds for lung cancer research, ultimately saving lives. “ Similar to other aggressive Cancers, treatment for Lung Cancer is most successful when caught early. High risk populations especially, have higher survival rates when the disease is caught and treated at an earlier stage, versus later in the disease progression when treatment options are limited. According to Brown, high risk individuals are “persons who are 55-80 years of age, have a 30 pack-year history of smoking (this means 1 pack a day for 30 years, 2 packs a day for 15 years, etc.) and, are a current smoker, or have quit within the last 15 years.” Individuals that fit into these pop-

CONVENIENCE KILLS!!! Suicide by Food

By Dr. Velonda Thompson, Ph.D.

t is no secret that obesity rates have risen in the United States over the past few decades as has the consumption of meals away from home, especially fast food. Food quality and quantity (portion control) are contributing culprits to bulging bellies. According to the 2011 CDC study, Fast-Food Consumption and Obesity Among Adults, “The prevalence of obesity increased consistently with frequency of fast-food consumption.” It goes on to say, “The odds of being obese were approximately 50% higher among those consuming fast-food 2 or more times per week compared with those consuming it less than once per week.” Although the study took place in Michigan, the findings were consistent with the national findings of the drastic increase prevalence of obesity in the United States, now considered a major public health concern. Why are we choosing a diet of fast food. The study addressed the reasons for choosing fast food and concluded convenience as the primary reason followed by taste, sociability and lastly cost. Fast food restaurants have embraced the choice for convenience by serving larger, cheaper fast food options and serving it faster. Should fast-food restaurants shoulder the blame when they are providing a service in demand and seeking profits or are we ultimately responsible for the choices we make. Wisdom dictates that when a person knows better, they will usually do better. We must start to educate ourselves about our food choices and the consequences of those choices. While most people know that fast-food does not have the same nutritional value as meals prepared at home, acknowledging the correlation between a consistent diet of fast-food and obesity must be made. The same CDC study makes the correlation clear in the follow-

ing statement, “Eating out may lead to over consumption and increase the risk of obesity in part because of larger portion sizes, high energy-dense foods and increased variety and preferred taste of the food. Fast food consumption in particular has been associated with poor diet quality and adverse dietary factors related to obesity, including higher intakes of calories, fat, unsaturated fat and sugar-sweetened drinks.” The convenience of fast-food and eating out is contributing to obesity. “Obesity is a risk factor for heart attack and high blood pressure” (Balch, 2010). It is estimated that obesity accounts for 21 percent of health care cost and that translates into $190.2 billion per year or 20.6 percent of national health expenditure. When you think obesity, what comes to mind? Food, food and more food! Yes, Americans are eating more. The following table gives an overview of the eating saga. Portion sizes are larger than previous decades and Americans are choosing the wrong type (animal-based foods vs. plant-based foods) Food

and amount of food. The average size dinner plate today is 11 – 12 inches compared to a few decades ago when they measured 7–9 inches. We can blame the food industry and its demand for profits. We can point to the billions of dollars spent by marketing and advertiser’s, cajoling and enticing us to consume products laden with sugar, salt and fat. We might even point the finger at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s nutrition guidelines, which has been blamed for “touting foods that will guarantee ill health for millions.” (Forks over Knives, 2011) There are many players that have brought us to the current state of health but we have the power to make better food choices. Choose to move and make over your plate.

A unified approach to

6 WAYS YOU CAN PREVENT (OR CATCH!) Breast Cancer

Understanding your risk and being proactive about your breast health can help lower your overall risk, or find breast cancer at an early (and more treatable) stage.

By Bridget K. Brisk, Montclair Breast Center

I

t’s common knowledge that smoking is the #1 cause of lung cancer and too much sun exposure will increase your odds of skin cancer, but did you know there are behaviors that increase your chance of breast cancer, as well? While some risk factors are unavoidable – your family history, ethnicity and age when periods started and stopped – there are things you can change. 1.- EAT REAL FOOD. Women who are overweight (BMI over 25) after menopause have a 30-60% higher breast cancer risk than those who are lean. The simplest way to keep your waistline in check is to consume food as close to its original source as possible (think: fruit, vegetables, legumes and fish). Additionally, all those delicious antioxidants help prevent cancer cells from forming! 2.- MOVE YOUR BODY. According to the large-scale, decades-long Women’s Health Initiative study, women who walked 30 minutes per day at least five days a week decreased their breast cancer risk by 20%.

3.- UPGRADE TO A 3D MAMMOGRAM. Doctors are now able to find, and treat, Stage 0 breast cancer. Typically called DCIS, this early stage mutation is more easily found with topnotch diagnostic tests, such as a 3D mammography. Treatment is typically a lumpectomy and radiation. Radiation therapy can reduce the risk of recurrence by about 60%. 4.- TAKE A GENETIC TEST. Depending on your family or personal history, your breast doctor may recommend genetic testing. If you test positive for a genetic mutation, your risk increases significantly: 40-85% over the

You can quit smoking.

6.- FIND A SPECIALIZED BREAST RADIOLOGIST. Women routinely see a dentist and gynecologist, but many don’t have a trusted physician dedicated solely to breasts. We recommend women see a breast doctor instead of a general radiologist. A breast doctor will help determine your personal risk, suggest prevention strategies and recommend appropriate breast monitoring so that any changes can be identified early and handled immediately. Deciding who will read your mammogram is important, as early detection usually means avoiding chemotherapy.

course of your life. Fortunately, there are medications (such as tamoxifen) that effectively treat and prevent some types of breast cancer. 5.- KNOW YOUR BREAST DENSITY. Around 40% of women age 40+ have dense breasts. Breast density is not determined by how a breast looks or feels, but instead through a mammogram. Both dense breasts and cancer tumors appear white on a mammogram – akin to “looking for a polar bear in a snowstorm.” Fat, on the other hand, appears black on a mammogram - creating a greater contrast against white tumors. Density classification is usually included in your mammogram report, but if not, ask your doctor. The information could warrant a n additional screening test, such as an ultrasound or MRI, and ultimately could save your life.

Prediabetes,

An Opportunity of a Lifetime

I

f you’ve received the diagnosis of Prediabetes from your physician, you have been gifted the opportunity of a lifetime to jump in head first to managing your health. Jump in like you did to plan your wedding, decorate the nursery or map out the vacation you saved years to enjoy. If you can muster that same level of dedication and passion, you can make changes today that will better your quality of life for years to come.. Prediabetes is diagnosed when your results from a fasting blood glucose test, reports numbers slightly higher than the normal range. According to The Cleveland Clinic, the number of women diagnosed with Prediabetes has risen from 15.5% in 2001 to 50.5% in 2010. As women, we face challenges to our health that come to us naturally. Thanks Mother Nature! Hormone fluctuations over time can increase our fat deposits, making weight gain a challenge to overcome. Being overweight increases your risk of Diabetes significantly. Scary stuff, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel! Although medications are available and widely prescribed for combating Prediabetes, simple lifestyle changes; like a 5-10% weight loss can make close to immediate effects. By limiting excess sugar in your diet, natural and added, you can reverse the diagnosis and slow the progress of disease. For most of us, the action taken immediately after a diagnosis like Prediabetes is the most life altering and can be the most aggressive. We vow to stop the snacking, eliminate the sweets and make the changes you may have been meaning to make for ages. But, the problem with aggressive changes catapulting off of emotion is the changes are without sustainable support. At the time of diagnosis, the increase for heart disease and stroke has already doubled. Do not wait to have a major health crisis to take control of your future. Diagnosis day is as perfect a time as ever to focus on your health with the help of a team of professionals. Seek out professionals in both diet and exercise, who have experience working with Diabetics. Look at credentials, experience and energy to find a fit for you and your lifestyle. Invest the time and resources to start planning for changes that will better the health of your future self. You are worth it!

Healthy Living by Healthy Eating By Grace W. Patterson, M.D.

Did you know these

facts about diabetes? 1.

About one third of all people with diabetes do not know they have the disease. 2. Type 2 diabetes often does not have any symptoms. 3. Only about five percent of all people with diabetes have type 1 diabetes. 4. If you are at risk, type 2 diabetes can be prevented with moderate weight loss (10–15 pounds) and 30 minutes of moderate physical activity (such as brisk walking) each day. 5. A meal plan for a person with diabetes isn’t very different than that which is recommended for people without diabetes. 6. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults. 7. People with diabetes are twice as likely to develop heart disease than someone without diabetes. 8. Good control of diabetes significantly reduces the risk of developing complications and prevents complications from getting worse. 9. Bariatric surgery can reduce the symptoms of diabetes in obese people. 10. Diabetes costs $174 billion annually, including $116 billion in direct medical expenses

N

o single weight loss method, or eating program can work for everyone, one size dies not fit all. The ultimate goal should be long term health through healthy eating and exercise.

In order to lose weight and keep it off, exercise is a key element, as it AIDS in increasing the metabolic rate, which helps fat loss while maintaining lean muscle. Fiber is important for weight loss, as it improves digestive health, and makes you feel full, while keeping blood sugar stable. There are two types soluble and insoluble. Soluble lowers cholesterol and insoluble promotes bowel regularity. Some soluble sources are: apples, bananas, broccoli, flax seeds, oranges, and sweet potatoes. Some insoluble sources are: celery, wheat bran, prunes, and spinach. Here is where water, nature’s natural fat burner, detoxifier/ cleanser and purifier plays an important part. Drinking half your body weight in ounces daily will meet you fit, full, and your skin will glow. Good food helps the cells in the body communicate with each other. The right diet can also repair the damage that fad, and crash diets have placed on the body. It is important to eat a balanced diet, but more importantly portion control has to be used, with small meals consumed frequently throughout the day. Another important factor in winning the battle of the bulge, “Television”, yes the boob tube! Turn it off, choose music, something soft, soothing to enjoy your meal, make it family catch up time, reconnect with your children, spouse, and get the whole house healthy. You’ll be glad you did! In healthy eating choose fresh fruits and vegetables over canned as much as possible. Plan meals and never stop for grocers hungry. Read labels and if you can’t pronounce it, you don’t want to eat it.

Acupuncture Dr. jeremy Steiner

A Holistic Approach to Treating Physical and Emotional Pain By Catherine Stearns

“Using a holistic approach means addressing body, mind, and spirit.”

“H

olistic means to take a step back, and to look at the entire person/patient as they present in front of me.” Within his practice, Apple Acupuncture in Montclair, Dr. Jeremy Steiner, DAOM, LAc, treats the “whole” person. “To take a holistic approach means to ask several questions and to listen deeply to the patient. This allows me to gain more insight into why the patient is experiencing their disease. Once I formulate a proper diagnosis, I can then draw from many different modalities in order to treat in a holistic manner.” A practitioner of Acupuncture and Traditional Medicine, licensed to practice acupuncture in New Jersey and Florida, Dr. Jeremy Steiner combines experience and expertise with his belief in the human potential. While his expertise lies in Electro-Acupuncture, Dr. Steiner also employs the healing modalities of auriculotherapy, cupping, moxibustion, dietary therapy, lasers, chi gong, and meditation within his practice. Dr. Steiner believes “Using a holistic approach means addressing body, mind, and spirit while providing the best of what modern and traditional medicine has to offer.” The science behind pain management, as explained by Dr. Steiner, further supports acupuncture as a substantiated alternative to prescription medications. “One of the ways in which Electro-Acupuncture works is by triggering the human body to produce and release endogenous opioids, such as endorphins, which deliver a blissful euphoria and erase pain. When someone ingests a prescription pain medication, the pituitary realizes there is an excess of opioids floating around in the blood and central nervous system and down-regulates or goes to sleep, stopping the production of its own natural opioids.” Steiner continues on to explain the differences between Electro-acupuncture and opioids in terms of withdrawal and lasting effects, “When the patient stops ingesting the prescription opioid, the withdrawal symptoms can become severe because the pituitary is no

18

www.hwfessex.com

longer producing its own opioids. In contrast to this, Electro-acupuncture is used to up-regulate the pituitary to produce and release beta endorphins which are one of the body’s natural opioids. The effects of Electro-acupuncture can last weeks or months after the treatment because the pituitary is still able to produce and release these healthy happy neurotransmitters.” It is well known that acupuncture effectively treats pain, it is lesser known that acupuncture can be effective at addressing both physical and emotional pain. According to Dr. Steiner, “Electro-acupuncture is also very effective in the treatment of brain neurochemistry imbalances, allergies, stress, depression, anxiety and drug addiction or to improve sports performance for athletes. Acupuncture is great at providing treatment options for several difficult illnesses that western or allopathic medicine fails to effectively treat. With the big push to find alternatives to opioids, I have seen Electro-acupuncture and other complimentary modalities take the spotlight. Now more than ever, people are seeking all natural methods and pathways to health and wellness.” Dr. Steiner works collaboratively to support patients through both referrals and consults with pain management doctors, physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists, neurologists, and primary care physicians. Whether you are new to alternative forms of treatment or are interested in learning more about options available to you in addition to your current treatment plan, Dr. Steiner’s practice is there to help you explore the possibilities of living pain-free.

Get Back to Living

The Pink Ribbon Program Empowering Breast Cancer Survivors through Fitness

T

By Lealah Afif

he Pink Ribbon Program is the first post-operative therapeutic exercise program for Breast Cancer survivors. Doreen Puglisi, a former college professor with a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science, created the program to aid in her clients’ recovery after mastectomies, lymph node dissections and reconstructive surgeries. Little did she know, the impact the very training protocol she created, would have on her own recovery, years later. Clients recovering from Breast Cancer related surgeries would come to train with Puglisi in her Denville, New Jersey wellness studio, without a plan for physical therapy or rehabilitation. “There is no medical standard for rehabilitation for breast cancer recovery. None.” Puglisi explains, “Let me give you an example. If a patient had knee, hip or shoulder surgery, they always get physical therapy. Always. That’s a standard protocol. With breast cancer, there is no standard protocol.” Where most would see a roadblock, Puglisi saw an opportunity. Determined to create the first therapeutic exercise program for Breast Cancer survivors, she based her protocol around strengthening and improving mobility in the shoulder, back and chest. Puglisi then combined her strengthening focus with Pilates based movements and in 2002, The Pink Ribbon Program was born. In 2004, shortly after creating The Pink Ribbon Program, Puglisi was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. The Pink Ribbon Program was integral in rebuilding her strength and confidence, throughout her rehabilitation. In 2005, Puglisi developed a certification designed to train physical therapists, occupational therapists, oncology nurses and fitness professionals, on The Pink Ribbon model. To date, there are more than 1,000 healthcare and fitness professionals certified in The Pink Ribbon Therapeutic Exercise Program with thousands more women helped, worldwide. ardio is our safe place. We have been there, we know how far, how fast and how many calories we burn when we do it. But there are times when we question, what else can we be doing? Maybe it comes with the change in seasons, that injury flared up again or maybe you’re just ready to see changes in your body that the same ole’, same ole’ just isn’t getting done. If you find yourself stuck in the same routine and ready for a change, you are not alone I The concept of jumping out of the cardio rut and venturing out into the world of weights and resistance bands, can strike us all at one point or another. Don’t know where to start? Keep reading. When seeking to make changes to our current routine, many of us look for the perfect Cross-training “program” to keep us motivated. Spoiler alert- there is no perfect program. The sad part is, when you find yourself ready to take the leap into Cross-training, it could be the overwhelming number of op-

tions you’ll find during your search that pushes you right back into the familiar. Don’t allow yourself to get derailed from your goals to change. You are in control of your choices and the driver of your destiny. There is something out there that is possible for you to do and dare I say, can be enjoyable! If you find your head spinning with options for Cross-training routines, facilities, trainers and protocols, try to embrace the chaos of what is available. Start with making a list of a few methods that you are willing to try and seek out more information on how to get started. Do your research and take your time, but do tryout all of the options you have listed and give everything a fair chance to work for you. You never know what may stick. The argument for adding in Cross-training is a strong one. None of us want to be relying on someone else to cook our meals or shuffle us around when we are in our golden years. Putting your muscles to work now and shaping them to keep you upright, hold you when you lose your balance and keep your bones and joints stable, are all things Cross-training, as part of a regular workout routine can provide for you. According to The American College of Sports Medicine, women who strength train can see a reduction in bone density loss, have lower instances of osteoporosis and can retain muscle strength longer, leading to healthier and more self-sufficient aging. As plentiful as the benefits are, adding in Cross-training to your routine means you may need to get a bit uncomfortable. Wait, what? Yes, uncomfortable. Remember back to that feeling of walking into a new classroom on the first day? That uneasy feeling you felt, as though you knew you needed to be there, but you had no idea how it was going to go? That feeling, right there is where you will need to put yourself. When the feeling strikes, try to remember, everyone was new once. The benefits of Cross-training will be well worth the anxiety felt getting started and it can be liberating. Wear the soreness and muscle fatigue like a badge of honor. A job well done and progress made. Keep an open mind when looking for something new and always seek the advice of a trained professional to guide you along the uncomfortable road to success.

973-996-8779 ● www.ckomaplewood.com Architect Studios was born in 2010 with the intention of creating a place where anyone at any fitness level would be welcome and accepted but also pushed to their maximum. Over three years later, it’s grown into the hottest HIIT studio in New Jersey. Founder Adrienne Felder taught group exercise classes for over 15 years in the competitive and tough fitness world and realized that it wasn’t always easy to fit in and feel welcome. This motivated her to develop a place where people felt at home and could reach their goals without fear of judgement. After teaching large classes in several regional fitness chains, Adrienne conceptualized an intimate place where every person felt like they were receiving one-on-one training. That place is architect studios: a place built on love, laughter and (A LOT) of sweat.
