COVERSTORY
L
Written By Ffjorren Zolfaghar
ooking back at childhood memories, I remember April as a fairly wet month. It was a little dark and gloomy, with snow and ice melting, and bouts of wind and rain adding to the bonechilling cold in the air. Even though spring was around the corner, it was always a bit frosty…yet, the melting ice and snow gave way to patches of green and dull yellows and brown. The rain helped cleanse the muck that had been living under the ice and snow all winter. The wind cleared the air; it circulated what needed to be moved around.
L
That particular weather beckoned an inner feeling of rebirth and renewal. It called forth a spirit of cleansing; whether that meant the annual spring cleaning of your garage or hall closets, or finally tackling those leftover and unresolved New Year resolutions. Either way, the coming of spring – with budding flowers, new babies and sunny warmth – set forth a cycle of change.
ike an egg gently nestled in the grass, waiting for a child to find it like hidden treasure, our Earth awaits a similar fate. It is sought after, poked, prodded, and literally eaten over and over again. Its contents are highly valuable, which creates a competitive hunt. We change its color, look and physical state. It is a true prize to be won, paid for through blood, sweat and tears.
This month, as the Earth moves into renewal, ponder on a few ways that you can do the same. Take a look at Going Within by Rev. Jack Elliott, and find a new way to connect with Mother Nature. Or maybe you need to recharge a relationship? Lisa Rojas’ article on Exotic Renewal Ceremony provides a unique way to reconnect to your loved one. Of course, we can always improve our “green” status, and Matt Larson’s article on 10 Tips Toward an Eco-Friendlier You can help you do just that.
Unlike the festive and jolly Easter egg, the Earth is not always revered in the same light. Some simply see it as a housing unit for our physical existence; it is not worthy of our respect or care. It is a means to an end. Some don’t see it at all… Similar to the chicken or egg theory, it is profound to know which came first. In our history, Earth existed before mankind. It is older and wiser, and should be treated as such. Even the animals and plants inhabiting our planet truly tap into the Earth’s natural cycles. They follow its lead.
We hope you enjoy this issue of HB Magazine. Have a wonderful Easter! HB
No matter what views you hold, those who live on this planet should handle it with care. We should only be humbled by its vast complexities. HB

Jerk
Embracing Your Inner Written By Rhonda Ashurst-Weir Have you ever watched helplessly while your “Inner Jerk” took over and made a complete mess out of a situation? Inside each of us lives a family of selves – Professional, Parent, Spouse, Pleaser, and Inner Jerk – to name a few. When one of them acts out, it’s usually a sign they are feeling ignored and rejected.
Critic is fighting with his Muse. He is led through a dialogue between the two and makes an interesting discovery, they both want the same thing – quality writing. They each have a role in the process: the Muse creates and the Critic edits. They are fighting for control, leading to the block. The dialogue leads to a fascinating solution. The Critic agrees to step back while the Muse is drafting; the Muse agrees to step back while the Critic is editing.
The concept of sub-personalities is an ancient one and influenced the work of psychological theorists like Freud and Jung. Jung did extensive work on identifying archetypal energies, which universally express themselves in human personalities worldwide. These ideas also influenced the work of gifted family therapists, such as Virginia Satir.
So, next time you find yourself being an unbearable tyrant, try a little loving on that Inner Jerk. If your inner casts of characters are quarreling, call a timeout and see if you can’t get them to agree on a common goal, even if their means of getting there are different. An interesting side effect of this inner work is it also works marvelously with difficult people. Maybe you can’t bring yourself to hug them, but try softening your heart and see what happens. HB
If this sounds like Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD), it’s not. Actually MPD is treated by helping the disowned selves to connect and communicate with each other again. The state of our mental health is deeply affected by how well our inner family is getting along, and how aware we are of the dynamics between the various selves. The Voice Dialogue technique, developed by Hal and Sidra Stone, is a simple way to begin the process of getting to know your inner family.

Some real life examples of working with inner selves:

KT, a loving mother, is walking with her son and their four dogs. She’s in a bad mood for no identifiable reason, and the yipping playfulness of her entourage is tromping on her last nerve. They discover a mud puddle – she explodes, yelling at her son and kicking the dogs. Later she realizes what happened: I was being a real jerk. We were supposed to be playing and having fun. Then I suddenly remembered to check myself and there was my Inner Jerk. I pictured myself hugging her, like I’d do for my son if he was having a bad day. The image snapped me out of my funk and I was able to apologize to my son, pat the dogs, laugh at myself and enjoy the rest of the walk.

In processing this later, she discovered she had been ignoring her own need to play in mud puddles. Her Inner Jerk was acting out to get her attention and, as it often happens when we “diss” a part of ourselves, she directed her inner frustration at her loved ones. Her homework assignment for the week was to go play in her own mud puddle. HJ, a gifted writer, is struggling with a serious case of writer’s block. A deadline is looming and he is staring at a blank screen. He is encouraged to explore his inner selves and finds that his

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache. Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. HB References: Tatum, Anne. Ear Candling. A.P. Enterprises. 1995.

Tips Toward an Eco-Friendlier You
1. Energy Audit 2. Keep the Cold
Regardless of how much you manage the heating and air conditioning systems in your home, air leaks throughout the household could mean you’re wasting energy every time you turn up the thermostat.
There are times when we waste water and don’t even realize it. It most commonly occurs when waiting for our water heater to kick in before a bath or shower. Every day, gallons of water are wasted as we stand beside the faucet, waiting for it to warm up. If saving water is a priority of yours, keep a few five gallon buckets on hand, and save that cold water for other uses. It could be repurposed to water plants around the house, soak grimy pots and pans in the sink, or, if you’re really passionate, cut off the water main to your toilet and manually refill it with your newfound cold water supply! Be creative: you can purchase buckets made from recycled materials, as well as a variety of home water storage systems.
A home energy technician, or auditor, can come in and check every nook and cranny of your house for leaks and proper insulation. From cable lines to cracks in the walls, these technicians don’t miss a thing. By closing all the doors and windows, the auditor can fixate a fan to send an airstream out of the house. An infrared camera can then be used to see where cold air is flowing in as the house depressurizes. And let the fixing begin! A complete energy audit and repair could save 5-30 percent of your monthly energy bill. If you can’t find a home energy technician near you, just start checking around the house for possible air leaks and insulation failures. Every little bit helps. You can also go to www.sierragreenbuilders.com for more tips and advice on weatherization, specific to the Reno/Tahoe area.

Anti-Cancer Drugs
Make Tumors More
Deadly
Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.
J
ust imagine you were diagnosed with a cancerous tumor, and your doctor told you that his/her proposed treatment could reduce the size of your tumor by 30 percent, but at the same time increase your chances of developing secondary tumors by a whopping 300 percent! in cancer treatment.” However, the researchers also discovered that by destroying pericytes by 60-70 percent, the number of secondary lung tumors increased threefold!
That is exactly what is demonstrated in recent research (at Harvard and MD Anderson Cancer Centers), and published in conventional Oncology Journals! The history of conventional anti-cancer therapies is replete with cases where the treatment turned out to be far more devastating than the disease itself.
These entire findings question the very argument that is pushed on unsuspecting cancer patients by most Oncology medical professionals; is treatment-caused tumor regression a desirable objective?
A 2012 study, supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), sheds new light on why the effectiveness of a relatively new class of cancer fighting (anti-angiogenic) drugs is actually short-lived, and can turn into a frightening scenario, very likely triggering fatal consequences. This study was published in the January 17, 2012 issue of Cancer Cell.
What is even more distressing is the high cost of these new drugs. In addition to that, other research shows an increased incidence of perforated bowels, perforated stomachs and heart attacks!
These drugs act by cutting off the blood supply to the tumors. Scientists and Oncologists from around the world made the shortsighted assumption that by cutting off a tumor’s life support system, they could achieve a successful and permanent tumor regression…WRONG! Little did they know that this would open Pandora’s Box and create a cancer nightmare! This same study described in Cancer Cell found that a group of little-explored cells (called pericytes), which are part of every primary cancerous tumor, likely serve as important gatekeepers against cancer progression and metastasis. In this investigation, Raghu Kalluri, M.D., PhD, professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, had actually intended to find out if killing pericytes could inhibit growth of tumors. They knew that the pericytes are important in supporting the growth of new blood vessels. What they discovered instead was both startling and disturbing: pericytes actually help PREVENT metastasis!
Open minded Physicians have long maintained the importance of focusing on treating the whole person, and not just the tumor. When the therapy destroys, or does significant damage to the patient, it cannot be beneficial! For some reason, conventional Oncologists have not caught on to this idea and continue to focus their efforts on tumor shrinkage, at all costs. HB References: 1. Kalluri, Raghu, M.D., PhD, “Study Shows How a Group of Tumor Cells Prevent Cancer Spread-Paradoxical discovery finds that pericyte cells help prevent metastasis”, Cancer Cell, January 17, 2012.
Dr. Kalluri and his colleagues found that by depleting the pericyte numbers by 60 percent in breast cancer tumors, they saw a 30 percent decrease in tumor volumes over 25 days. Conventional “medical wisdom” hailed this as a “breakthrough

Amazing Amino Acids: the Building Blocks of Protein
...and You!
About 75 percent of the human body is comprised of long and short chain protein molecules made up of amino acids. Of the classic 22 amino acids, 12 are non-essential and 10 are essential (meaning our bodies cannot make them on their own; we must ingest them every day in our diet and/or by supplementation – our bodies do not store amino acids like they store fats and starches). A deficiency in even one of the 10 essential amino acids sets up a cannibalistic-type reaction within our bodies – breaking down our body’s proteins (muscle and so forth) – searching for the missing amino acid!
Written By Dr. Dan Smith, D.C.
H
ow often do you think about Amino Acids? For most people, not so much. Well, your body “thinks” about them 100 percent of the time! While most of us have heard that amino acids are the building blocks of protein, do we really grasp their importance – that without them our bodies simply cannot make the proteins required by every living cell? In a sense, that makes amino acids the “building blocks” of our bodies! Is your body getting the amino acids it needs every day? Are you living your most vibrant life?
Our mental and emotional wellbeing is another vital area where amino acids are required for proper functioning. Communication within the brain and nervous system occur through chemical “languages” used by neurotransmitters – two fairly well known neurotransmitters are Serotonin and Dopamine. Neurotransmitters are powerful chemical messengers that regulate numerous physical and behavioral processes, including cognitive and mental performance, emotional states, and pain response. Amino acids support the natural replenishment of neurotransmitters.
The collective role of amino acids in the repair and maintenance of a healthy body make them vital. There are an estimated 100,000 plus proteins found in the human body made from combinations of amino acids. These combinations are responsible for: n
Building and repairing cells including muscles, organs, glands, bones, skin, hair and nails
n
Making metabolic and digestive enzymes
n
Making neurotransmitters – critical for brain and nerve function
Additionally, amino acids aid in the detoxification processes of our systems – removing the internal pollutants that are created from environmental chemicals, medicines, nicotine, alcohol, processed foods, and so on. Do you think you’re getting enough protein in your diet? If you suffer from any of the following conditions, you may not be getting sufficient amino acids: n Fatigue n
Carbohydrate cravings
n
Making hormones
n Allergies
n
The production of antibodies – which fight against infection and illness
n Hypoglycemia
n
Building a healthy immune system
n Low-serotonin
conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, insomnia, or fibromyalgia
If one amino acid is deficient, can you imagine how easy it is for a chain reaction of symptoms to occur within your body?

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

The body cannot directly use the proteins found in food. Protein that we consume has to be broken down into amino acids, which the body then uses to build the different specific proteins it needs. That means it is actually the amino acids, and not the protein itself, that are the essential nutrients. Amino acid deficiency as the root of illness and correcting those deficiencies as the remedy is perhaps the most widely overlooked and underutilized diagnosis and treatment protocol within our healthcare system today. Thus, if you are suffering from any of the above conditions, you may be interested to know that there are safe, cost-effective, all natural remedies to these and other common ailments in the form of supplementation with amino acids, in conjunction with certain vitamins and minerals. In summary, every system in our bodies requires amino acids to function properly – our bones and organs, our digestive tract, our brain and nervous system, and even our emotional wellbeing. Amino acids are essential to support a healthy body throughout each phase of life – infancy, childhood, adulthood and elderhood. These are some very powerful little nutrients: the Amazing Amino Acids! HB References: 1. Moore, Jason E. M.S., M.B.A., TLSC Biotech 101 Noc 2010. Calder PC, Kew S. Insomnia:
What to Do When Medications DOWork? Written By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B
T
here are an estimated 100 million people in the United States suffering from sleep disturbances/ insomnia. That’s about one third of the entire U.S. population. Ambien (Zolpidem) is one of the most frequently sold drugs in this country, which acts to help people who have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. Zolpidem belongs to a class of medications called “sedative hypnotics.” It works by slowing activity in the brain, to allow sleep. The drug, if taken for more than two weeks, is addictive to the degree that if you stop it immediately, you will get withdrawal symptoms – do not so without help from your doctor. This dose of drugs may change your mental health in unexpected ways, even if properly dosed (aggressiveness, unusual out-going behaviors, hallucinations, sleepwalking, feeling like you are outside your body, memory problems, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, easily agitated, slow speech, depression, suicidal thoughts and more). You get the idea – there is a better way. Indeed, you can’t sleep because your brain is over-active – particularly a part of your brain called the mesoncephalon (upper brain stem). This over-activity of the upper brainstem essentially puts a person’s brain in a continual “fight flight” syndrome, and abnormally affects people’s circadian

Insomnia: What to Do When Medications DO Work? Written By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B Continued from Page 14 rhythms. Fight flight mechanisms are designed to keep one’s system “stimulated” for about five to 20 minutes – not continually. This is the mechanism the “sedative hypnotics” address, and they do so by depressing other parts of the brain – hence the myriad of side effects listed above. This same mechanism can be strengthened so that your brain’s fight flight syndrome can be slowed down and balanced by the stronger parts of the brain. The discipline that addresses this core cause/ mechanism of insomnia is called Functional Neurology, and with thorough evaluative procedures and specialized testing, it can determine the imbalances in the brain and correct these deficiencies with non-drug stimulations to the brain, bringing it under control – no drugs, no side effects. Metabolically, the brain nerve cells also require proper “fuels” to respond to treatment properly. Metabolic imbalances (blood sugar imbalances, inflammation, abnormal cortisol/adrenal issues, GI problems) in the body can cause insomnia on their own, or make the above referenced brain mechanism unable to correct itself or respond to the brain based exercises. These imbalances can be ferreted out – again through an organized assessment of all the patient’s symptoms that cause them to not be able to fall or stay asleep. Most patients engage in trying one supplement or another herb/botanical at a time, in a hit or miss approach; which can’t ever get to the root cause of the problem, unless they are very lucky.
Combining the clinical assessment protocols of Functional Neurology and Functional Diagnostic Medicine, it is rare that the cause of insomnia – whether neurological (brain), metabolic (imbalances in blood chemistry) or as in most cases, BOTH – cannot be determined and corrected long-term without drugs or surgery. By eating raw food, you needn’t use energy from the stove, oven or microwave. There’s less packaging and processing involved in a raw apple as compared to a microwaveable, frozen apple pie. There is a belief that cooking food above a certain temperature, about 118°F, kills its “life energy,” and while many nutrients remain, “dead food” is being consumed. Reiki in the Medical and Religious A
from participants before and after treatment. The study showed that the Reiki group received an immune enhancement by way of an increase of white blood cells after the treatment. Another study found that patients who received Reiki experienced a lower diastolic blood pressure. These exciting studies are opening the door for us to learn more about what Reiki can offer to the medical community, and its benefits on our bodies and immune systems.
s alternative healing gains more attention in society, new studies have begun to validate the effectiveness of Reiki, and many people are curious about how it works, its effectiveness, and how it fits into their religious views. Recently, on the “The Dr. Oz Show,” Dr. Mehmet Oz interviewed Reiki Master Pamela Miles, and hosted a demonstration of Reiki healing. During his interview, Dr. Oz stated that Reiki was his “favorite alternative treatment that could change the future of medicine forever” and Reiki was the number one “Oz’s order.” Dr. Oz, whose wife Lisa is a Reiki master, invited an audience member to have a brief Reiki healing. The audience member reported that after a few minutes of Reiki, her headache was relieved.
Often, patients wonder about the religious aspects of Reiki. Reiki is a system of healing based off of Eastern energy principles – the universal life energy is all around us and is channeled through the practitioner to the client. The client’s spirit is healed, and when the spirit is healed it will cause the body and mind to be healed as well. The focus of Reiki is on the seven chakras, or subtle energy transformers along the body, through which life energy flows. This life energy is called “ki,” pronounced “Chi.” This concept of universal life energy is present throughout almost all different cultures and religions, it is known as “Qudra” in Islam, “Prana” in Sanskrit and “Mana” in Polynesian. Energy healing techniques are common around the world, and are mentioned in ancient holy texts. In Christianity, the apostle Paul speaks of healing in I Corinthians 12:4-12, as well as 12:28-31, in which he speaks of spiritual gifts including the ability to heal, and people having different roles in the church, as teachers and healers. In Islam, the seven points, which are referred to as the Chakras, are called the “lata’if,” and an Islamic form of energy healing similar to Reiki has developed called Reiki Sufi, in which the practitioner calls on Allah and uses verses from the Quran. In Israel, a healing technique called “Shefa” is practiced, which is similar to Reiki as well, but uses Hebrew Prayers.
That experience is just one of a growing number of reports indicating that Reiki has medical significance. A 2008 survey indicated that 15 percent of U.S. hospitals offered Reiki as a part of their routine patient services. This number is sure to grow as Reiki gains more and more acceptance in both the medical and religious arenas, even becoming listed in a nursing “scope and standards of practice” publication on patient care. Hartford Hospital in Connecticut reported that patients who received Reiki experienced pain reduction by 78 percent, and patient sleep was improved by 86 percent. Julie Motz, a Reiki healer who works with Dr. Mehmet Oz at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, assisted during both open heart surgery and transplants. She reports that none of her patients treated thus far have experienced post-operative depression; all have reported a reduction in pain; and among transplant patients, none in her care have experienced organ rejection. Even more astounding is a study conducted on the immune system in Portland, Oregon. Volunteers were divided into three groups, one received Reiki treatment, another received relaxation, and the third received nothing. Blood was drawn

for energy healing used in Reiki have been used for thousands of years; with over centuries of use, these techniques became closely guarded, reserved only for the religious and societal elite. Reiki as we widely know today was re-discovered nearly one hundred years ago, by Usui Mikao in Japan. Dr. Usui was a Buddhist monk in Japan. He was well-educated and traveled, studying history, medical science, psychology and the canons of Christianity and Buddhism. After traveling to China and Europe, Dr. Usui returned to the monastery at Mt. Kurama in Japan, where he discovered using the techniques of energy healing without depleting one’s own energy. In short, letting the energy of the universe flow through you like a conduit, rather than storing and using your own energy. Reiki itself is religiously neutral, in that it doesn’t call upon the power of any specific deity. Usui’s belief was that practitioners should be able to treat all people equally, and that every person should be able to share in these techniques. Because Reiki is spiritual in nature, love and compassion are an important part of its practice. Its nature is compatible with many religious beliefs, including Christianity, Judaism, Muslim and Hinduism. Thanks to what Usui called “the wonderful gift,” people of all faiths have begun healing, as well as practicing his technique. Reiki practitioners and clients are found in a vast variety of cultural, religious and medical backgrounds. HB References: 1. BEN-YAAKOV. Miriam. (2005). Miriam ben-yaakov. Colonics Colon therapy, a gentle cleansing of the colon – which we have provided in our office since 1976 – removes pounds of fecal material (our record was a nine pound weight loss after a colonic) and re-structures the colon, helping to relax and open narrowed areas; which increase the venous drainage of fecal material back into the body. Colon therapy also treats enlarged areas and loopy, redundant bowel segments with a warm water bath that provides an exercise for the colon to help it to return to a more normal anatomy. This warm column of pure water exercises the bowel muscles like exercising our outer body muscles. The bowel sewer system is important to address or we will be internally poisoned for life. Interestingly, colon therapy is now used in a major medical center as the preparation for colonoscopy. Using the regular prep solutions is uncomfortable promoting diarrhea and can cause depletion of important minerals especially in the elderly. Ask you gastroenterologist for a colonic prep for your colonoscopy. Scientific literature is available to support this procedure.
The Earth Within Us: The Importance of Colon Hydrotherapy
Sterility

here is nothing more “earthy” than bacteria. Our bacterial flora in the intestinal tract, which the German and Swiss doctors call “the lawn,” amounts to 1014-16 bacteria and fungi per gram of fecal material1. Human cells account for 1012 or 1013 bacteria, depending on who you read. This means that there are thousands of times more bacteria and fungi that live in our intestines than we have human cells in our body. We are vastly outnumbered. The German biological doctors call our intestines “the lawn” because they have a surface area of roughly 10,000 sq. feet, roughly the size of a football field. If an average, non-obese person has two or three pounds of fecal material lingering in their colon that would multiply out to 3 x 454 (grams per pound) x 1013; that’s a lot of bugs.
All of the tubing and speculums used in our colon therapy are disposable. The colon therapist is trained and certified for proper use of the equipment. Warm, filtered water is introduced at a very low, comfortable pressure, and massage or vibration is used to optimize elimination. Tummy’s go down after a colonic, and it can produce a calming, relaxing state of mind. Getting rid of trillions of bacteria that may remain in the body is a great boon for health, especially for the chronically constipated. During the colonic, we also implant good pro-biotic bacteria and other healing treatments. Bowel cleansing has been touted for good health for millennia, and was mentioned in the Dead Sea Scrolls, the holy men began their day with a bowel cleansing. All of the world’s medical traditions attach great importance to colon health. It is important in Indian Ayurvedic Medicine, Chinese Medicine, German Biological Medicine, American Herbal tradition and others. We always have said good health has many realms, from the gross to the subtle. Cleaning and repairing the sewer system should not be ignored. HB
These bacteria make many toxins and poisons (skatoles, pyrroles, indoles, aldehydes and hundreds more), some are psychoactive (abnormal thinking) and inflammatory (arthritis, allergies), and in the presence of a leaky bowel from yeast and food allergies, dump fecal material right back into the body via the veins around the colon.
References:
Good bacterial types have been overwhelmed from our SAD (Standard American Diet). Our standard diet contains many antibiotics in feedlot beef and chicken; which promote resistant bacteria and fungi such as Candida albicans, which cause the leaky gut syndrome and damage our livers and adrenal glands.

1. Gather towel, robe, oils, prepared products, writing material, water, soft music (optional), and quiet the house. 2. Begin running a bath. Light incense in an area you will not be directly in, or use an aroma diffuser and place it in the bathroom. An essential oil, such as narcissus or jonquil (used for prayer and meditation), can assist you in feeling protected and spiritually connected. Do the same for the bedroom, where you will later be dwelling. 3. After adding a few drops of essential oil to your bath (jasmine for love, white lotus for spirit), you are now ready to emerge into the bath and universe. Soak, be quiet, and breathe for at least 20 minutes. This is when you are breathing in the new and releasing the old. New energy will begin to fill you. You may feel an opening of self, and have the urge to write or share your new brightness with your partner. 4. Time to slough off another old layer by using a natural exfoliate. You will have prepared a salt or sugar scrub by mixing ½ cup dead sea salt (purifying and detoxifying), or raw sugar (polishes the skin, do not use if diabetic), to ½ cup quality base oil, such as Jojoba or Almond, and 10 drops orange blossom oil (purifying). For a more gentle scrub, reminiscent of a fresh Spring morning: mix ½ cup of base oil with 2 tablespoons jojoba beads (small spherical wax beads) and adding 1/4 teaspoon of shaved mimosa resin (skin renewal and new beginnings). While sitting at the edge of the tub or standing, exfoliate the skin with long strokes then small circular movements, caressing yourself or your partner with love, breathing in the godly scents and having thoughts of freshness. Sink back into the tub and enjoy this sensation of renewal. Rinse off, pat skin lightly to dry, then spritz with rose water or other natural body mister.

be worth reconsidering. After all, eggs are a complete protein; they contain all essential amino acids. Eggs are also high in vitamins A, B2, D, and E, as well as niacin, biotin, copper, iron, phosphorus, and unsaturated fats. None of the nutrition facts on that box of powdered starch and emulsifiers come anywhere close to indicating that egg replacers can supplement the nutritional benefits one gets from eating an actual egg. Of course, not all eggs are created equal. Fresh organic eggs, from chickens that have been allowed to forage for food, including bugs, have been shown to be higher in vitamins and lower in cholesterol, when compared with feed-lot eggs. The chance of exposure to salmonella is much lower when you purchase eggs from a small family farm, as is the chance that the chickens producing the eggs have a good quality of life. If you still feel that eggs cannot be included in your diet, there are many simple whole foods that make excellent egg replacement, and do not come with any weird additives in tow. For sweet baked goods, such as cakes and cookies, a half a banana can be substituted for every egg, or you can use four tablespoons of apple sauce. One tablespoon of milled flax seed plus tablespoons of water can also be mixed to equal an egg. Fiber-rich flax helps baked goods become light and fluffy too. As always, when navigating the grocery aisles, choose whole foods over food products, and watch out for those multi-syllabic additives. HB References: 1. Churchman, John D. HERBS&SPICES
Sweet, Spicy, or Smokey: The Many Faces of
Paprika
Written By Allison Prater
P
aprika is a spice comprised of sweet and sometimes spicy peppers. Paprika varies in flavor from country to country, ranging from mild to hot. The word paprika is derived from Hungarian and Serbian origins, meaning “pepper.” In many parts of the world, the word paprika refers to the pepper itself, not the powdered spice. Paprika is produced in Hungary, Serbia, Spain, The Netherlands, and California. Hungarian paprika, from the Szeged region, is thought to be some of the finest. Paprika is commonly used to season and color rice, stews, and soups such as goulash. It is used to season sausages, such as Spanish chorizo, and matches well with cauliflower, chicken, crab, fish, lamb, potatoes, shellfish and stroganoff. It is also used as a garnish, because its distinctive red color adds to the appearance of many dishes. The flavor of paprika is more noticeable when the spice has been heated in oil. In Moroccan cuisine, paprika is moistened by the addition of a small amount of olive oil, creating a paste. Paprika’s bright red hue makes it a popular food coloring agent. If you have a food product that is red, orange or reddish brown, and the ingredients list “natural color,” paprika may likely be

the culprit. Paprika is sometimes added to henna paste because it gives a reddish tint to hair. You can add paprika to henna powder yourself if you prepare your own at home. Hungarian paprika is most commonly found in grocery stores. It usually includes Hungarian wax peppers. The most commonly exported grade of Hungarian Paprika is the Noble sweet (Edesnemes), which is bright red and slightly pungent. Other varieties range from being very sweet, to slightly pungent to very pungent and spicy. The hottest of the Hungarian paprika is called Eros, and it is light brown in color. Spanish paprika, also known as Pimenton, usually includes bell peppers. It varies from mild (Pimenton Dulce) to spicy (Pimenton Picate) to smoky (Pimenton de la Vera). The latter is created by smoking the peppers before drying and grinding it into a powder. Traditionally, the peppers are smoke-dried over burning oak wood chips, for up to two weeks. Below is a paella recipe featuring Pimenton de la Vera. Its sweet, smoky flavor will conjure up the feeling of the warm summer nights that are fast approaching.

Spanish Paella
Start by sautéing the onions in oil on medium low heat; when onions are clear, add garlic, cumin, smoked paprika and tomatoes. Stir until well combined into a paste. Add chicken and vegetables and turn heat up to medium high. When chicken is browned on both sides, add the rice, and at least 8 cups of broth to start. Stir entire mixture; reduce to simmer and cover, checking every ten minutes or so, adding more broth as needed. It should take between 30 minutes to an hour. When the chicken is completely cooked through and the rice is soft and sticky, the paella is ready to eat. Cool for 10 minutes and garnish with Parsley before serving. HB
(This recipe can be made vegan by omitting the chicken, and substituting tofu or other vegetables of choice) 4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts, in 2 inch pieces 2 cups cauliflower, chopped 1 1/2 cups green beans 1 large red onion 2 cups chopped tomatoes

Dear Bertha, I recommend that you spend some time with your Mother-Mother Nature that is:
the trees. I was both amazed and comforted by nature. This must be why they call it “Mother Nature,” I mused.
Go on a walk with her, you’ll be amazed. I believe that Spirit uses Mother Nature to teach us what we need to know, to transform our own lives. In my twenty plus years as an HR Executive, I noticed that many of my co-executives went for a walk at lunch time. After a few weeks of being the only person in the employee dining room, I decided to walk as well. To assure that I would do it, 12:00 to 12:30 p.m. was marked on my appointment calendar so that my assistant wouldn’t book an appointment during my 30 minute walk.
While I’ve always loved the autumn colors, it’s spring that often amazes me. Early one May, I had gone out to gather the morning papers and I noticed that the Crêpe Myrtle Tree near my front door had the tiniest buds--just about to pop! I remember thinking that by the next week, the tree would be in full bloom, but I’d miss it because I was going to be gone. Later that day, I was working in my den, and I noticed that the day had turned out to be warmer that I had anticipated. Not warm enough for the air-conditioning, but a perfect day to open a window. As I opened the window, I noticed the tree. Something had covered it. I dashed outside to see what had covered the tree only to notice that each and every bud had opened up! The unusually warm day had caused the tree to transform in just five short hours. The tree was filled with beautiful red flowers and rich, fresh green leaves. I was awestruck by nature once again.
The first day or two were hard. I kept looking at my watch, as to distract the mind chatter, which was endless: “I should answer Harry’s email; I have that huge deliverable at 2:00, I should be working on that; my feet hurt--why did I wear these shoes…” and so on. But I stuck to it. On the third day, I noticed the scent of some roses as I walked by a neighboring building. “Why are these here?” I answered myself, “They’re here to be enjoyed by the people who walk by.” I was surprised I hadn’t noticed them the prior two days. The next day, I gave myself a challenge: to notice something else in nature that I hadn’t noticed the day before. What I noticed was flowering ground cover, beautifully stacked rocks, and artfully manicured lawns surrounding the neighboring office buildings. Prior to my daily walks, all of this had gone by unnoticed. Soon, I was excited about my noontime walk, for I knew that Mother Nature had another surprise for me, just around the corner.
As I went back to my writing, I realized that Mother Nature is a great teacher. If a tree could transform in five hours, why couldn’t I? Spirit gave me that metaphor for a reason. Spirit used nature once again to remind me that what may seem to be now, in just a moment, may very well be something totally different.
I remember one day, when spring was just becoming summer, the warmth of the sun seemed to wash over me as I took my walk. It felt so good. I asked myself, “When was the last time you felt this good!” I couldn’t remember. The image that did come to mind was me as a child. I couldn’t wait to finish my breakfast, so I could get “outside.” When I was a child, I lived for the outdoors. I relished the feel of the wind against my face as I rode my bike down to the playground. The smell of newly mowed grass awakened my senses, and provoked me to kick off my shoes and socks just so I could feel the warmth of the carpet of green beneath my feet.
So Bertha, I invite to see your world from a different point of view. Go for a walk in nature. Let Spirit and nature reveal to you what you need to see. The rain will cleanse you. The sun will surround you with warmth. The Ocean will humble you when your ego becomes too large. The earth will ground you and support you as you take a stand. The mountains will inspire you to grow bigger than you could ever imagine. The flowers, and their fragrance, will remind you that there is a sweet, sweet Spirit that is always with you. Enjoy your walk! - Rev. Jack HB
I remember, lying in the grass for hours taking in the rich blueness of the sky; making up imaginary stories from the imagines I formed in my mind from the clouds as they passed by overhead, “Look it’s a bunny!” I loved watching the tree tops sway in the breeze, and the sound that wind made as it passed through

GARDENING “A Rough Patch” Written By Teresa Howell
The Road Ahead
R
awhide Ranch is one hundred sections of BLM lease and deeded land stretched between the towns of Gabbs, Hawthorne and Mina, in Nye County, Nevada. Years ago, my dad managed that ranch, and I spent many horseback days with him in a veritable kingdom of desert canyons and hidden waterholes. Once, as we rode through a particularly spectacular canyon, Dad looked up to the canyon rim and said, “People think they can own this, but they can’t. It was here long before we came, and it’ll be here long after we’re gone. How can people own this?”
sense, meaning there’s a deed on file at the courthouse with my name on it that gives me dominion, and a tax bill that comes to me once a year. I built a house on those acres. I planned it, and did much of the work of constructing it myself. Among the many moments of pure despair and pure elation, the greatest elation came the day we punched the four-hundred foot road to the spot where my house would stand. Sometimes, even now I say to myself, “I have my own road,” although I know it’s childish to gloat over a road so short.
Dad’s politics were a mix of Rush Limbaugh and Karl Marx, and I never knew which one of them would be topmost at any given time. But that existential question made sense – how can we think we own this land?
I’ve thought about why that road means so much to me. As roads go, it’s not unpleasing: gravel, with just the slightest bit of a lilting sway, and a few little ruts where accumulated water raises the clay and changes the texture of the surface. But any narrow gravel lane acquires much the same character.
These days, I live on a few acres in a place much less wild than the Rawhide Ranch, but still beautiful. I own it in the traditional Photo: PeterSpain.com Visit www.HBmag.com

My instinct is to say I love it because it’s mine, but why does the “mine” of the road somehow trump the “mine” of the surrounding dirt? In part it’s because a road is physical means of access, a way in to the land, the stick of the Popsicle. The property is mine because I made a way to get to it. My mother used to paint Nevada landscapes, and once she told me that when she painted mountains, she wanted a way into the picture; canyons or ridges that led the viewer’s eye to the horizon. My road does that. A road is also a claiming, a way of physically imposing my will on the world, a way of proving I exist. I wrote “Kilroy was here” with a bulldozer. It’s human to want to leave a mark, to scratch initials on the desk, enlarge the map of our country.
Such claiming is also futile. As the History Channel series Life after People points out, once humans are gone, our artifacts crumble pretty quickly. In the battle – if such it is – between man and nature, man inevitably loses; we just won’t be around to see the loss. We cannot, after all, own those canyon rims.
ift r G u! Ouo Yo t
Such claiming is destructive; the road erodes; with enough initials, the desk becomes too rough to write on; the map is redrawn with ink of blood. Nevertheless, we can’t – and shouldn’t – stop claiming, because as much as the byproduct of claiming is destruction, it is also construction. Without it, human life as we know it isn’t possible. The purest among us depend upon those roads, those desks, those maps for our physical, mental and social well-being.
Cleansing Pain Relief Weight Loss Radiant Skin = Energy!
This doesn’t give us a pass to do what we will to the environment, because although the changes we make are not permanent, they do alter the world in which we live and upon which we depend. We live with the garbage we create. It doesn’t matter if the stream will be clear in fifty years, if there’s arsenic in it now, that’s what we have to drink.

The question, then, isn’t about saving some bountiful Mother Nature by abrogating the human desire to claim and shape, it’s about how best to channel those desires in a way that nurtures human life and culture in a sustainable way.

That is what I try to do in my garden. I’m imposing my will on nature; I grow some plants that aren’t particularly adapted to Nevada, pump up water that nature doesn’t see fit to give me, adding manure from animals that fed elsewhere. I can say, this morning glory or this tomato wouldn’t be here without me. But I work in partnership with nature; what I grow I must grow within the confines of nature, so that the peas I grow today don’t preclude the possibility of peas tomorrow. That’s sustainability. I can’t own the canyons, but I can ride among them. When Teresa Howell isn’t testing Mother Nature, she teaches English at Great Basin College in Winnemucca. HB

America on the Brink
The Next Added 100 Million Americans By Frosty Wooldridge
Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt
A
t the current rate of growth, America will add one hundred million Americans in the next three decades. Illegal immigration adds one million per year, and legal immigration adds 1.2 million. The babies born from families who are already here will add up to create the one hundred million increase by 2040. The world population grows by a net gain of 77 million human beings annually; that’s 9,000 newborns per hour over deaths.
arrest. If you live in a large city, you smoke the equivalent of one pack of cancer-producing cigarettes every 24 hours, just by breathing the air. The damage doesn’t stop there. When winds blow the air pollution out of our cities, it falls as acid rain on the land, in our lakes and rivers. It poisons the earth and water. It creates havoc with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in our topsoil. It kills entire fish populations. It kills trees and native vegetation by changing their “ph” balance. And it finds its way to other nations. For instance, China places a new coal-fired power plant on line every two weeks. The resulting air pollution falls on North America in ever increasing amounts.
America is the third fastest growing country on the planet, behind only India and China. This hyper-population growth affects every part of our environment. For instance, for whatever amount of population increase in your state, a certain amount of farm acreage will have to be destroyed. By 2050, Texas will grow from 21 million to 48 million people, which means millions of acres of land will be taken out of farming for development of homes, malls, schools, parking lots and business parks. Colorado will add 1.5 million by 2022. That means over three million acres will be taken out of agricultural production in that state. We lose four acres a minute, 6,000 acres a day and 2.2 million acres annually to development caused by population growth in the USA.
It takes 12.5 acres of land to support each American. That’s known as the Ecological Footprint for just this country. So, for every additional person, 12.5 acres are removed from the natural setting. It must be paved over, built into suburbs, schools, colleges, fire houses, malls, roads and everything else that sustains our society. So the next 100 million added Americans will wreak havoc on the natural world in an ever more deadly population dance, removing habitat for natural plant and animal life by 1.25 billion lost acres.
Adding more people will naturally require more energy to heat and cool homes and businesses, more factories to produce the additional products for sale, more cars to carry us around, so air pollution will increase too. Particulates (tiny pieces of pollution) from cars, power plants and factories, do more than clog your lungs. It has been shown in recent research that air pollution can cause irregular heart rhythms, heart failure and cardiac

The Spirit is
Still Moving
The Sixties in the U.S. is a tough act to follow. The stage stretched from coast to coast, and the drama was intense, with many subplots. Given all of the fanfare, it is easy to miss the fact that the spirit of God is still moving all over this land. It’s just that it’s off the big stage and down in the trenches now. The visions of a generation clamoring for love and peace remain largely unfulfilled. And more hippies have become servants of the establishment than most would care to admit. Social movements can be exciting, but they tend to draw people who are more interested in rebelling and protesting rather than actually changing. Real and lasting change comes primarily from within. It takes place when the government you overturn is the government of a constricting ego, and the democracy you achieve is the one that gives voice to your soul. The spirit is still moving all over this land, and it wants to move in your life. It may not have the drama and audience of the Sixties; its path is more humble, grounded, and personal now. The spirit moved powerfully through Dr. King’s dream, but it now moves just as strongly through yours. It moves through your struggles, your relationships, and your private acts of courage. The dream of the Sixties is not dead; the battle for peace and love is still in its infancy. If you want to be a part of it, and help it grow, you must fight for it as an individual, by bringing love and consciousness to your own life and soul. HB

here is a religious folksong I learned in church when I was young. The chorus went, “The spirit is a-movin’ all over, all over this land.” It was a perfect accompaniment to the changes taking place in America during the Sixties: the Vietnam War and its protests, women’s liberation, the civil rights movement, and the explosion of rock and roll music.

Meditation Changes Your Br and Can Cha Written By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHT

here are many things one might say is happening to you during meditation, but basically this is what researchers have found: your brain changes, your blood chemistry changes, your stress level goes down, your muscles relax, your blood pressure decreases, your heartbeat slows, and your sense of well-being increases. Not bad for just a short twenty minutes. In fact, meditation gives you the ability to focus. The result is a type of mental coherence that isn’t easy to achieve in other ways. This coherence seems to create mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health for long-time meditators. Some actually describe the meditation experience as being in a nonlocal state of consciousness, where space and time are just informational enrichers, not limitations. They experience a timeless, spaceless connection to something greater. All the martial arts employ this component of mindful discipline; which is a practice of focusing intentional awareness. We call these various focusing practices meditation. Of all the things you can do to understand yourself and move higher into self-actualization, nothing will serve you as well as developing the habit of meditation. Although the practice of
Visit www.HBmag.com
meditation is typically thought of as being associated with Asian cultures, it is not Christian, Jewish, Buddhist or Muslim and can be done with no spiritual component whatsoever. The role of meditation in stress reduction is well known. This practice is also becoming increasingly common as a way to treat chronic illnesses, such as the pain caused by arthritis. Meditation is also being taught because of its effectiveness in helping troops to cope with the horrors of modern warfare, and to recover from the posttraumatic stress disorder which afflicts so many thousands of returning vets. In fact, meditation has entered the Marine Corps. The kind of meditation the Marines were taught, a kind of non-sectarian focusing, has been shown to make a big difference in lowering stress, increasing the power of memory, as well as improving one’s capacity for empathy. Practitioners have long claimed that meditation provides cognitive as well as psychological benefits, and seems to prove that people are not just feeling better because they’re spending more time relaxing. The brain is actually being changed.

Over a thousand papers, and many books, on meditation have been published in the last ten years, describing studies that show meditation provides measurable progress in alleviating many varied physical challenges. During these years of research, it has become abundantly clear that meditation has lasting effects on our neuroanatomy, particularly our brains. Long-term meditation, independent of a specific style or practice, seems to add grey matter to different parts of the brain, literally physically changing the brain. One thing to expect: People, who use any meditation technique regularly over time, tend to change their world view. They come to feel that they’re not alone, that all life is interconnected and interdependent, and that this network of life, including them, is connected to something profoundly good; something greater than themselves.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a way of learning to become aware of whatever is happening in this moment. By developing this skill it is possible to begin to take charge of one’s own life by simply noticing what is happening in the mind and body while it is happening.
There are many types and methods of meditation. You should have no trouble finding one that resonates with you. Also, there are local meditation classes, so if you feel that you want some immediate instruction, join a class. You may benefit in ways you cannot even imagine. HB

ASTROLOGY
ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOK VITAL, LIFE-GIVING IDEAS IN A TIME OF PROFOUND CHANGE Written By Eric Francis
Horoscope for Health | April - 2012
T
he astrological year began March 22, with a high-energy New Moon just after the Aries equinox. Mercury is retrograde in Pisces until April 4. Mars is retrograde in Pisces until April 13. As these planets station direct, the pace of events will increase rapidly. Indeed, April is the month that we really discover that it’s 2012. The pace doubles in May and again in June; so enjoy the relative calm and more than anything, point the vessel of your life in the direction you most want to go. You may not have much influence over the amount of energy, but you have all of the influence over your intentions and your desires. Look in the direction you want to travel. If you can’t see the horizon, climb up on something high, and bring your binoculars. Look where you want to be. Aries (March 20-April 19) Consider this a beginning, and pay attention to the conditions of your mind and in your environment. Make careful notes about your plans and your expectations. This is all in the spirit of applying conscious guidance to the flow of your affairs. What you have going for you is a simultaneous abundance of energy and ideas, as well as some really useful leverage points to make changes that have been overdue for a long time. Yet you need a guiding principle, which would come in the form of having an overview and some sense of where you are, what you want and where you’re actually headed. This is not the time for making impetuous decisions without any thought of the consequences. Yet if you focus and work with a solid basis for your decisions, nearly anything is possible.
settle for no less from the people around you. In the spirit of “not pushing,” you may simply need to disregard the views of anyone who you discover lying. Or you may need to gently call them out. If the situation involves someone in a position of authority, be clear, be direct in a gentle way, and note how the perception of your authority or responsibility is influenced by your actions, though without that as a specific goal. To sum it up in two words: Listen carefully. Cancer (June 21-July 22) If you’ve ever wanted to advance your career, or launch a major new project, the time is approaching. Through April, you have a series of gateways that are related to an idea or revelation you had in late March. This may not be a new idea, though what I see is that you’ve finally figured out how to put the pieces together into something that’s quite original for you. It’s crucial that you implement your plan in stages between now and late June. Don’t try to do it all at once; start with the basics, or with one solid core element, and gradually begin to refine and modify as you build. You can expedite matters by working within a small group, if that group is focused clearly on your goal, and understands it well enough to help with the refinements
Taurus (April 19-May 20) The next couple of months contain many opportunities to shift your relationship to the past. At first it may seem like the past has an unusual amount of influence on you now, but what you’re seeing is something that’s always a factor. What is changing is an awareness factor – in particular, seeing how over-focus on the past divides your attention, as well as leads you to invest precious energy in circumstances that don’t exist. Yet it’s necessary to see this before you let it go. It’s necessary to see and notice any inner division before you can work it out. Where you go from there is another question entirely, but one thing is sure: if you’re honest and forgiving first with yourself and with others, many interesting options will open before you.
Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) A fog that has long shrouded your life has lifted, and you now have the benefit of being able to see far into the distance. As you look out at the horizon you may notice that your imagination is stirring to life again. That would come in the form of seeing first clear sky, then some intangible forms taking shape, and then a kind of animation. The idea here is to visualize what you want to happen. Visualize something different for yourself. Fully claim the power of inner seeing, and the influence that has over what actually manifests in your life. You’re now free in a way that you were not free before: in a way that liberates your spirit from day to day; free to move around and more than anything, free to see both yourself and the world from many different points of view.
Gemini (May 20-June 21) Mercury is retrograde through April 4, and the few days surrounding that date may come with some turbulence, particularly in leadership situations or your professional life. Two suggestions may help you navigate these waters. Don’t push; rather, turn gently, and feel the movement of the currents around you. Second, insist on total honesty with yourself, and

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22)
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) Leadership implies service. When the service aspect is removed, obsession with power rushes into the space, which is precisely not what you want. There are at least two levels to what you offer the world. One comes from the visible aspect of your position: what you’re expected to do, and what you observe needs to be done. The other is subtler, even covert. It’s what you do for others because you can make it happen. You’re the one who decides whether any such action is ethical, and whether you’re willing to face any consequences (the first question is the more important one). Then you act because you can. This may involve assisting someone through an obstacle they could not get past on their own. This may give you an idea – how to do this for more people..
You’re drawing near the end of a long phase of review, in particular, of the whole matter of desire. This is a controversial subject and I trust that when you wandered into this project, you discovered that it’s a region where healing is necessary. Much of that has come in the form of understanding the role of guilt in your life; as you know, its effects are toxic, but there’s just so much of the stuff that we might think there’s no escape. There is a way out, and it comes with a decision – one that you may have been holding off on making, despite all that you’ve learned. Think of your desire as the irrefutable truth. What you do with it is another question, but I think you’ll find some authentic peace in simply letting it be what it is. Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) Venus begins its journey across Gemini this month – where we will all experience the Venus transit of the Sun in early June. That’s two months away, but it’s an event so rare that you’re likely to be feeling the energy rising now. The theme, for you, is healing a false split in your mind. At some point, what was considered “spiritual” may have divided off from what is considered “unspiritual.” Usually this kind of moral divide involves love and sex, which is constantly cast in an aura of impurity. However you may have decided in the past that this is not true, you’re now at the point where you can embody the message fully, and then continue with your life from a new place of confidence. Affirm with the full power of your faith that love is all that matters, and proceed as if that alone is true.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) You may not feel like you’re making the progress you want – as if part of you wants to lurch forward while some other part of you is holding off. I suggest you resolve the tension by deferring to the voice that is hesitating. I can see something in the charts that you may not be able to see from your viewpoint in the world – which is that there’s a doorway you can go through. Visualize yourself in a dark room, so dark you cannot see where you are. But you have other senses: you can feel the surfaces around you. You can make a sound and estimate the size of the space. If you proceed slowly and thoughtfully you’re more likely to find your way out – and that is what your astrology is suggesting you do now. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) One of the boldest themes in your chart right now is how you acquire and use resources. This includes money, though I am using a word that expands the idea to any available materials which you can put to work for a creative purpose. One feeling connected to this experience is that of drawing energy, ideas and funding from a broad base of support. Another is a stark reminder to apply those resources in ways that are authentically representative of who you are and what you want. This is indeed the time to vote with your wallet, but the thing you’re voting for is yourself. Think of every dollar, quid or euro you spend as an affirmation of what you truly believe. If something doesn’t stand up to the test, don’t make the investment. HB
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) Mars – the oldest of the Scorpio planets – finally stations direct this month, and I trust that by now you’ve figured out who your friends are, and who they are not. You’ve had a few false hopes dashed, and have replaced them with some practical plans to do the things you want the most. If you haven’t arrived at that step, make a list of three things you’ve always wanted to do, and plan to do them this year. I suggest that you get to at least one of them by the time this month is over, and the other two by the end of June. Get some momentum going. The key to wish fulfillment for you is to be specific. Know what you want, in particular. Forget about why you want it – that may be the thing you discover last. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) You’re at the point where your plans are starting to materialize, and maybe even bear fruit. But I suggest you make an offering of pleasure, in the spirit of Beltane (which for everyone else is around May 5 but which for you is all of the coming month). I suggest you do things that celebrate your abundance: a gathering or two of your true friends and supporters, an investment in your career (such as a new piece of gear) and an update of your business plan. There’s one other – in the spirit of Beltane, I suggest you offer at least one experience of erotic pleasure to the Earth, the Universe or the Goddess (however you think of it) as a fully conscious affirmation of where you want your life to be going. Celebrate healing, freedom and most of all, the fact of being alive.

o me, the month of April means that you are almost at the end of school. It is like a wake-up call saying, “it will soon be summer, so keep your grades up and continue doing well, you are almost there!” Last month, we discussed putting important things first, such as if you had to study for a test and go to a party on the same day, which should you do? I hoped you picked studying for the test, because that would be more important, of course. This month we will talk about The Relationship Bank Account. Look at the chart below and rate your relationships on a scale of one to five, where five represents a strong relationship.

“I love the recipes, the articles about alternative medicines and how they are useful (or the occasional ones about how a medicine is being used in a new way) and I love the monthly “herb” page. I like herbs and knowing how to use them for more than flavor. And just an FYI, I turned to this magazine when my sister needed help with all western medicine failed her. Because of your magazine, I was able to help her experience some relief.” –Ann Drayer

Top Nutrients for our Pets
N
Carbohydrates provide energy for the body’s tissues, play a vital role in the health of the intestine, and are likely to be important for reproduction.
utrients are substances obtained from food and used by an animal as a source of energy, and as part of the metabolic machinery necessary for maintenance and growth. Here are the essential nutrients for a healthy pet:
Vitamins are catalysts for enzyme reactions. Tiny amounts of vitamins are essential to dogs and cats for normal metabolic functioning.
Water is the most important nutrient. Essential to life, water accounts for 66 to 70 percent of an adult pet’s body weight.
Minerals are inorganic compounds that are most important as structural constituents of bones and teeth, for maintaining fluid balance and for their involvement in many metabolic reactions. HB
Proteins are the basic building blocks for cells, tissues, organs, enzymes, hormones and antibodies, and are essential for growth, maintenance, reproduction and repair. Fats are the most concentrated form of food energy, providing your pet with more than twice the energy of proteins or carbohydrates.

Many people talk about the environmental devastation by human activity, but very few talk about the reason for that--an earth out of balance because of too many people. No politician will address the issue, as they don’t want to offend even one voter. The issue gets kicked around like a political football as one party blames the other. Religious and cultural mores are off-limits to discuss except privately, or within organizations trying to help the situation, or in books like this, or in college classes. If those who say that the world’s carrying capacity is infinite are correct, and there are enough resources to take care of even more people, then why do over eight million adults and twelve million children starve each year? Something’s wrong with this picture. We see that the world is already past the point of not being able to sustain the masses of humans who exist here now with any semblance of dignity or comfort. What happens to the Earth, as well as to our own freedoms and our opportunity to live a healthy life, when the total population of Earth reaches 12 billion or more?
AMERICA ON THE BRINK: The Next Added 100 Million Americans
From space, Earth looks like a beautiful blue gem, marbled with tan deserts, white mountaintops, meandering rivers, green forests and jungles. Many believe Earth is a living entity, balancing itself through necessary changes over eons of time, and has a finite carrying capacity. The old saying, “Don’t mess with Mother Nature” may have some validity here. We hope she doesn’t kick us off before we come to our senses.

Much of the 21st century urban world squats in squalor, surrounded by pollution, excrement and decay. More than a billion people lack access to drinking water, and at least that many have never seen a toilet.

The oceans are not exempt. They have become our dumping ground. We deposit 8,000 pieces of plastic into our oceans and seas every 24 hours. It is estimated that 46,000 pieces of plastic litter float in every square mile of our oceans. A deadly conveyor belt known as the Mississippi River delivers nitrogenlaced, chemically active fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides by the millions of gallons hourly, twenty four hours a day. Latest research shows a 10,000 square mile dead zone, beginning at the mouth of the Mississippi. Humans have demonstrated an unspeakable power to devastate their ecosystems. Let’s talk about freedoms. Liberty cannot survive a continuous packing-in of people. As population increases, the value of any one individual decreases. If our numbers continue to rise, on a world with a finite amount of fresh water and land, the future inevitably holds greater restrictions on individual liberty, as well as options.

Supplements 101: Arnica A Natural Solution to Bumps and Bruises
alkaloid trimethylamine and helenalin, a sesquiterpene lactone that is a major ingredient found in anti-inflammatory products. It has been used by Europeans and Native Americans since before the end of the sixteenth century to reduce the pain and inflammation of sprains, aches and bruises. European arnica is obtained from Arnica montana and Arnica chamissonis, while American arnica is obtained from Arnica cordifolia, Arnica fulgens, and Arnica sororia.
B
Formerly part of the U.S. pharmacopeia from the 1800s to 1960, arnica is the most common homoeopathic medicine used for aches, sprains, bruises, abrasions, postsurgical bruising, and similar surface wounds. Studies have shown strongly positive results when used for contusions and hematomas of any part of the body. It should generally be the first medicine given for any ankle or wrist sprain.
Written By Kevin Vania
ruises and sprains can be very bothersome. They’re painful and often hinder our ability to make it through the day without a struggle, or at least forcing us to think about a nagging injury every time we move a certain way. On top of the pain and discomfort, bruises tend to have an undesirable effect on our appearances. The dark blue and purple shades that linger on our skin as indicators of tissue damage aren’t something we typically enjoy.
Arnica is most recommended to be used externally as a topical cream for local application. Never apply arnica to an open wound. While it is considered safe for external use, it is poisonous when taken internally, frequently causing death. Arnica should not be taken by mouth without the direct medical supervision of a doctor unless you are using homoeopathic tinctures, capsules, pellets, tablets, or other diluted preparations of the herb that are safe for oral consumption.
Sure you can relieve pain and swelling with conventional medicines that often do as much bad as they do good, and you can cover blemishes with makeup, but what about actually fixing the problem using natural solutions that aren’t going to harm your body? Looking for a homoeopathic treatment? Look no further, arnica (arnica montana) is your natural remedy.
Arnica tinctures are prepared using a dosage of liquid extract from the fresh or dried flower heads, diluted up to 10 times with water. A tincture of the herb can be used in compresses for bruises, or even swelling related to toothaches.
Arnica, commonly referred to as leopard’s bane, is a beautiful yellow daisy found in meadows and mountainous regions of Europe and North America. The herb grows in acidic soils, and its perceived medicinal properties are due to high levels of

forming when used immediately after hurting oneself. Apply arnica to existing bruises to reduce the appearance, and tenderness. Arnica has anti-inflammatory properties. It may not “cure” sore muscles, but applying it after a long run or a day of heavy lifting can reduce the duration and intensity of soreness. Sleeping on the road or in situations away from home, like camping, you may be forced to sleep on hard, uncomfortable surfaces. If your bed is too firm or hard, you may wake up with a sore back and painful muscles that feel as if they have been bruised. Take arnica up to three times a day to relieve aches and pains. Toothache; tear off a small piece of a cotton ball and apply several drops of arnica tincture to the cotton and place the cotton next to the swollen gum to provide relief. In small doses, arnica is a cardiac stimulant. It is also given for angina, a symptom of underlying heart problems in which your heart muscle is deprived of oxygen-rich blood. It is also used in pregnancy. Arnica is given routinely at the end of labor when a woman is sore. Arnica is a fairly common remedy for sore muscles in circles like the running community. It is gaining popularity in the treatment of postsurgical bruising, and many people find it really works! But remember, what works for some people may not work for others. Some people are more susceptible than others to certain substances. “Each reacts according to his ability,” according to author Michel Aubin. There are no model prescriptions with homoeopathy; rather it involves applying a method based on logical reasoning. The information for all types of homoeopathic remedies is out there, so educate yourself and medicate the safe and natural way. HB *Arnica belongs to the Asteraceae family. SIMPLY THE BEST NO-BAKE CHEESECAKE
SIMPLY SQUASH In February, and March I am simply squash hungry! I suppose it’s the beta carotene my body needs, and my taste-buds must know it on a most basic level! I simply crave squash; any squash. But my favourite at this time of year is a buttercup from my garden or a Hubbard from a friend’s. If the squash is a huge one, there is a lot can be done with the leftovers, including soups and pies. Since many winter squashes keep well into the spring, I’ve cooked them even into the merry month of May!
This cheesecake has been a family favourite for years. It is light and creamy; a simply delicious way to top off a simply delicious meal!

HOW TO PREPARE:
HOW TO PREPARE:
1. Cut peppers, onion and broccoli florets into a bowl, set aside.
1. Whip mashed potatoes until smooth. Mix in peppers and onion
2. Slice mushrooms into a separate bowl, set aside
2. Add beaten eggs; mix thoroughly into potatoes and veggies.
3. Put a couple of tablespoons olive oil in skillet; heat to “moving oil” but not smoking! Carefully add chicken pieces and fry, stirring occasionally until they are tender and well cooked. I cover between stirrings. This takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from pan with slotted spoon, put into another bowl, cover and set aside.
3. Add milk, cream and sour cream, all at once and mix well. Finally add spices, and pour into medium baking dish. 4. Top with parmesan cheese and sprinkle liberally with crushed parsley.
4. Add a little more oil if needed to stir-fry onion, peppers, and broccoli all at once; remove from pan back into their bowl
5. Bake in 350 F oven for about 40 minutes.
5. Add the 1 or 2 T. of butter to skillet; make sure it is back to high heat, add mushrooms and stir-fry until tender and slightly golden…jus t a few minutes. 6. Return chicken and vegetables to skillet with mushrooms; sprinkle with salt*, pepper and paprika; toss around and add some sliced almonds if desired. *sea salt or veggie salt works equally well. visit www.HBmag.com for more delicious recipes!

HOW TO PREPARE:
HOW TO PREPARE:
1. Whip cream to stiff peaks, adding ¼ C sugar and ½ tsp. lemon extract just before final stage.
Place in steamer basket in a large kettle; steam until tender. Cool enough to handle. Scrape out the meat of the squash, discarding the hard shell with its remnants to the chicken-bucket or to the compost pail.
2. Fold ¾ of the whipped cream into the softened cream cheese (to which you have added the other ¼ C sugar). 3. Spoon into pie shell.
Mound the cooked squash in a baking dish, dot with butter, crush some dried organic parsley and sprinkle on top.
4. Sprinkle raspberries over top of filling.
1. Serve immediately OR
5. Chill at least 4 hours before serving.
2. Let cool on the counter without butter and parsley. When cool, cover and place in the refrigerator up to 2 days. When ready to serve, place squash in a 350 F oven for about 40 minutes, depending on amount of squash. When piping hot, dot with butter; sprinkle with parsley and serve with your favourite meal.
Makes 6 servings. * Options: instead of the lemon extract, use almond extract and sprinkle some crushed sliced almond on top. Use your imagination, any fruits work well with this recipe!
Your body and your taste-buds will be grateful and satisfied.

“Rawsagna”
with Sweet Tahini Sauce Submitted By Marie-Claire Hermans from Ravishing Raw Eating raw during winter can be quite challenging. Especially during the darkest and coldest days; many start craving their favorite “comfort” take-out dishes: French fries, pizza, pasta and lasagna. A simple way to handle these cravings is being prepared. Always have enough greens, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds in your kitchen, so you can start creating a raw version of your desired cooked one at any time. This raw lasagna is fast food in its purest form, and ready in less than ten minutes. No need to count calories. Your “Rawsagna” is absolutely guilt free! Sweet Tahini Sauce Mix following ingredients thoroughly with a whisk or in a blender: ½ cup of raw Tahini ½ cup pure water (no tap water) 1 TBSP fresh lemon juice ½ tsp Celtic sea salt or Himalayan salt 1 TBSP raw honey or ½ TBSP agave nectar Continued on Page 54

“Rawsagna” with Sweet Tahini Sauce Submitted By Marie-Claire Hermans Continued from Page 53 Ingredients Rawsagna for two persons:
Assemble:
1 long Daikon (raddish), cut in half length wise
Flatten some watercress on both plates
1 carrot
Place your first Daikon square on the watercress
½ red beet
Put some red beet, carrot, a slice of avocado and some cilantro on top
½ turnip
Cover them up with another slice of Daikon
½ avocado A handful of cilantro
Continue with some sprouts, turnip, beet, a few sprigs of Arugula
A handful of sprouts of your choice
Fantasize until you finish with the fourth slice of Daikon
Some sprigs of arugula
Top off with some marinated almonds
Watercress 2 TBSP of almonds
Take a spoon full of Sweet Tahini Sauce and pour it over the rawsagna
1 TBSP of peanut oil (or the oil you have available)
Tips:
Prep time: First chop up the almonds roughly, pour the oil on top and let them marinate while preparing your dish Slice 2 thin, long slices of the Daikon with a wide potato peeler or a mandolin. Cut the slices into nice, equal squares. This is your “pasta” to make the layers.
This beauty makes a tempting starter for any special occasion; even non-raw guests will be delighted. It is lovely as a main dish, in combination with a mixture of lettuces and fresh herbs. Remember: always buy organic produce, and feel the difference! For more raw recipes, visit Marie-Claire Hermans, Author and Ravishing Raw Coach & Chef, visit online at www.ravishingraw. com.
Make “julienne” slices of the beet, turnip and carrot with a sharp knife or a julienne peeler (this little tool is very handy and fast) Slice the half avocado into four long parts
