I
am so excited to celebrate the five year anniversary with Healthy Beginnings Magazine this August. I began freelance writing with HB Magazine in 2007 and moved into the Editor position a little over a year ago. It is truly an honor and privilege to work with such wonderful people, as well as our contributing writers! I am also in awe at how many readers send comments, content suggestions and notes just letting us know how appreciative they are of the resources and tools they gain from HB Magazine. This month, we’ll look into a few interesting topics including what you can learn from your dream, the world of addiction, a book review on how to grow a positive mind, kidney stones and many more. Of course, we also have our recurring monthly pieces including our healthy horoscopes, recipes, ingredient watch on juice boxes, the rough patch garden column and kids’ corner. No matter what you’re looking for, or even if you are just taking a quick break and need something to peruse, there is a little bit of everything in each issue of HB Magazine. We hope you enjoyed the run as much as we have! On behalf of HB Magazine staff, we thank you for your readership! HB Pause. Breathe. & Be Well, Ffjorren Zolfahgar Editor & Content Director

Celebrating 5 years
ach journey begins with an idea, mine began seven years ago. My dream was to create and publish a natural health magazine; essentially marrying my professional background in advertising and marketing with my passion for alternative and natural health solutions. I find that when faced with medical issues, it is comforting to find unbiased, educational information that offers natural and alternative solutions to one’s health concerns. Being well informed better equips us in making educated decisions on how to proceed. Healthy Beginnings Magazine fills this need. Why Reno/Tahoe? It is my love of the mountains, Lake Tahoe, and its proximity to the ocean and many national parks that drew me to this area. Healthy Beginnings magazine is now in its fifth year of publication; we have reached a major milestone with the consistent patronage of our readers and advertisers. It has been my pleasure to meet and work with several incredible healers and talented professionals. Positive reader testimonials keep us on the right track, and help me plan upcoming content. Healthy Beginnings enjoys being your resource for natural health solutions; offering alternative information for living a happy and holistic health lifestyle. Thank you and we look forward to your support for many years to come. HB Best in Health and Happiness, Dawn Gowery

Prevent Illness with “Immune Boosting” Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.
A
s a physician treating cancer with integrative/alternative medicine, one of my greatest challenges and biggest frustrations, is having the patient present to me after they are already sick. That is the paradigm in medicine in this country, and has been for many years: wait until you are sick and then go to the doctor for the “cure!” Immune boosting is one way to help prevent getting sick in the first place.
UBI (ultraviolet blood irradiation) is a new/old treatment that was started in the US in the 1920’s. Its focus shifted to Eastern Europe in the 1960’s as pharmaceuticals became more popular for treatment in the United States. Amazingly, the EPA has issued a policy statement “recognizing the therapeutic benefit of UBI in treating viral diseases and some forms of cancer.” It has been demonstrated to be superior to drugs in treating chronic viral infections. Also, a number of studies have demonstrated that UBI is very stimulating to the immune system in general.
C Technically called “Immune Enhancement Therapy,” this approach consists of the use of particular IV and oral substances, as well as mental/psychological techniques, with the goal of strengthening and balancing the immune system.
These therapies obviously must be done in a clinic setting under the supervision of a trained and experienced physician. Some things that can be done at home are taking extra Vitamin A and D3 and/or the herbs Echinacea, sweet violet, cleavers, red clover and burdock. They are all known to be of great benefit to the immune system.
Just as there are many different substances that can suppress the immune system, there are as many that can build, strengthen and balance it.
Intravenous vitamin C, in the dosage range of 15-50 grams (that’s 15-50,000mg), is widely recognized as being viricidal (deadly to viruses) in and of itself, but also very strengthening to the immune system. One of the mechanisms is by increasing the ability of certain white blood cells to produce internal peroxide. This gives them a greater bacterial and viral fighting tool, because peroxide is deadly to them.
The next thing a person must realize is that they must practice some form of relaxation steps on a regular basis to turn down their stress level. Over activity of the sympathetic (adrenal overdrive) nervous system is widely known to suppress the immune system. Stimulation of the “relaxation response,” by whatever means, enhances the immune system. These are general steps that can be utilized in “Immune Enhancement Protocol” to help a healthy person stay that way. Each individual would require a unique program based on their age, state of health and medical history.
Heavy metals (lead, mercury, aluminum, etc.) are known to inhibit the immune system. It stands to reason then, that removing these substances from the body will help build the strength of the immune system. This is accomplished through oral or intravenous chelation therapy, using a compound called calcium EDTA. Interestingly, this therapy has been recognized by the AMA for treatment of heavy metal toxicity, since the 1920’s!
In these days of economic considerations it is also much more cost effective to keep oneself healthy than to wait for disease to develop. HB
Oxidative therapies are another category of treatments that can be applied to help improve the function of the immune system. The use of ozone and hydrogen peroxide increase the oxidative stress on the cells of the body. Normal cells have metabolic mechanisms to deal with and neutralize this stress. However, cancer cells, and many microorganisms that prey on the immune system, cannot handle the stress and therefore succumb to it.

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.
Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. HB

If you are having trouble accepting your fantasies, a good place to start is to think about them and write down your reactions (positive or negative). It is important to acknowledge these thoughts and approach them with a sense of curiosity--set aside judgment, shame or guilt. Many people bury or ignore what makes them feel good; which, can lead to an unfulfilling sex life. Expressing your innermost feelings has the wonderful ability to enhance your sexual well-being. HB
Erotic Fantasies
References:
antasies are part of nearly everyone’s sexual repertoire, yet most people are quite disconcerted with the subject. Research shows that 95 percent of men and women report having experienced erotic fantasies. Additionally, people who feel less shame and guilt regarding their erotic fantasies during intercourse reported higher levels of sexual satisfaction and functioning than did others who felt guilty about them. Most fantasies that are sexual in nature begin from early memories; the first images that you find arousing. They may be positive or negative, or both.
For more info, contact Dr. Tory Clark at (775) 843-9593 or visit online at www.toryclark.com.
The most common thought that one may have is “are my fantasies normal?” Fantasies are vast and have different meanings for each individual. Some fantasies may be romantic and tender; others may be rough and kinky. The top ten erotic fantasies given the most on surveys are: threesomes, sex with a famous person, a friend or someone you have a crush on, a former partner, a stranger, someone of the same gender, being dominated (tied-up and spanked), sex while someone is watching, and sex in public or exotic places.

Our erotic fantasies have the ability to serve as wonderful tools to enhance our sexuality. They help increase sexual arousal during masturbation and sexual relations with a partner; they help people through anxiety and can act as a way to mentally rehearse new sexual experiences. They can also allow for taboo behavior (a forbidden fantasy is more exciting for some). People also may escape through their fantasies into worlds that consist of group sex, sex with strangers, forceful sex, or one night stands--all without actually engaging in them. For most, fantasies are much more exciting when they stay within their imagination and are disappointing when acted upon. Which begs the question, should you and your partner disclose your innermost fantasies to each other? First, you should be clear about why you would like to know. Are you trying to learn what your partner’s private sexual thoughts are out of your own insecurities, or are you excited to explore those thoughts to enhance each other’s sexual desires?

The Ugliest Things in the World: Kidney Stones
How to Move Them Along Written By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD
O
f all the pains in the world kidney stone pain is some of the worst. Of course, textbooks have been written about this problem, and I hope you can avoid them. However, if you have to visit the unfortunate realm of kidney stones there are some helpful pointers which may be of advantage to you.
Coke. This is to be followed with ½ cup of asparagus juice, which is an herbal diuretic, to flush the stones out. B6 250 mg per day is also a nutrient diuretic. Epsom salts, or magnesium sulfate, is a ureteral dilator and helps open up the pathway for the stones to exit the urinary tract. Try ½ tsp. of Epsom salts in water every hour or so, until diarrhea occurs and then back down the dose. Sometimes, bouncing on an exercise trampoline is helpful.
A recent article in HB made excellent suggestions regarding diet to avoid kidney stones, especially avoiding milk, rhubarb, raw spinach, aspirin and perhaps vitamin C, if they are recurrent. Most stones are made of calcium oxalate, and are very ugly. They resemble the most gruesome fishing hooks, with devilish barbs and cutting surfaces. Of course, if you suddenly develop back pain radiating into your flank and moving into your groin with blood in your urine and accompanying waves of nausea, you can confirm the diagnosis of kidney stones with an IVP (intravenous pylorogram); an x ray with dye, which lights up the kidneys, collecting ducts around the kidneys and the ureters (tubes leading into the bladder) and bladder.
My absolute favorite treatment for stoness utilizes Neural Therapy from Germany. Neural therapy uses procaine, local anesthetic, injected into the skin over acupuncture points. I generally add the Homeopathic combination of Spascupreel from Heel, Germany to the procaine and inject into the back of the head Bladder 10 points and the mid back Shu Points, Bladder 23 and behind the knee in bladder 10 and kidney 40. Of course, acupuncture needling into these points has been done for millennia. I find that procaine with homeopathy works faster in achieving results.
Usual treatments can start with conventional diuretics, water pills, which increase urine flow and lead into lithotripsy; a sound/shock wave treatment administered through the skin to break up the kidney stones, and can move into a surgical treatment, administered by a urologist, to send up a stone basket to retrieve it through the urinary tract. Lithotripsy is not always a walk in the park. A good friend and patient had stones a dozen years ago, and following lithotripsy his renal (kidney) artery was ruptured and he nearly bled to death. He was hospitalized for six weeks afterwards until he recovered.
Last year, a 63 year old female equestrian was having severe kidney stone pain and after the first injection into the above points, her nausea stopped completely and her pain reduced 80 percent. On repeating the injections, two days later she passed her stones and was a very happy camper. I have done this with a score of patients over the past 10 years. Always check your parathyroid hormone level if you have recurrent stones. If it is high, it can cause calcium to plate out in your kidneys and you may need to have your parathyroids removed at a specialty clinic in Florida. HB
There are numerous claims for stone solvent herbs, like Royal flush, and Bucco from Nestmann, which prevent inflammation in the urinary tract. Folk remedies, which have been helpful for us over the years, include drinking a six-pack of Classic Coke in one hour. The phosphoric acid in the Coke helps to dissolve the calcium oxalate stones; this is the only time we recommend

Jungian Psychology Series:
Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD
A
Psychology’s New God
lthough cognitiveb e h av i o ra l t h e ra py ( C B T ) has been around for several decades, its exalted status within t h e f i e l d s o f p s y ch o l o g y, medicine, and healthcare insurance has reached a fever-pitch the past few years. One of the most researched and popular forms of psychotherapy, CBT is increasingly hailed as the “gold standard” of treatment for depression, anxiety disorders, and insomnia. In addition, CBT has been enthusiastically embraced and promoted by insurance companies because it is considered an effective, short-term therapy. Owing to the hundreds of research studies documenting its efficacy in treatment for the above illnesses, CBT is the quintessential “evidence-based treatment.” In fact, there is currently a movement within the field of psychology which maintains that only evidence-based treatments–especially CBT and its derivatives–should be taught in post graduate psychology and social work programs and practiced by psychotherapists.
With its overriding emphasis upon the power of thoughts, CBT essentially glorifies the mind and “rationality.” While it is true that our thoughts affect our emotions and behaviors, it is also true that the psyche is an autonomous entity, which has reasons and goals, which the “rational” mind and ego may never understand. In fact, some illnesses occur precisely because the “logical” ideas and beliefs that a person has tried to sell himself fail to convince his core personality. In some ways, obsessive thoughts and irrational fears are like germs; they are always present but only become our problem when they have something to latch onto. That something is our inner psychological process. For example, a person does not usually develop recurring thoughts of death or suicide simply because his appraisals of life and self took a negative turn, but because the theme of death resonates with his deeper process–usually the need for change and transformation. A young mother does not develop a persistent phobia of her child being kidnapped just because she read a newspaper article about a kidnapping and overestimated the danger. At an unconscious level part of her may wish that someone would take this “burden” off her hands. And the frequent traveler might not have developed a fear of flying if there was not a part of him that desperately needed to come back down to earth.
CBT is a blending of two psychological approaches to the human personality: behaviorism, which focuses on techniques for changing behavior through conditioning processes (punishment, reinforcement, desensitization, etc.), and cognitive therapy, which emphasizes the role of thinking in behavior and emotions. From the perspective of cognitive therapy, emotional problems arise from maladaptive/irrational thoughts and assessments we carry towards ourselves and the events of our life. Straighten out your thinking and problematic behaviors and emotions will melt away. Both behaviorism and cognitive therapy essentially deny the existence of the unconscious, or deem it irrelevant to the origin and healing of mental illness. The result is a truncated view of the psyche, somewhat akin to a horticulturist who ignores the role of roots and soil upon a plant’s health.

What traditional CBT theory is reluctant to acknowledge is the fact that our inner world is projected outward, manifesting itself in unbidden but very symbolic thoughts (and also in symbolic behaviors and physical symptoms). Approaching such thoughts from a literal perspective, or the consensus reality of the conscious mind (be it the client’s or the therapist’s), may reassure the ego for a time, but is unlikely to satisfy the deeper psyche. Perhaps this is why the “effectiveness” of CBT seems to be enhanced with the use psychoactive medication.

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®
August 2011
Anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medications typically dull a person’s connection to their emotions, perhaps allowing the ego bounce back with its “rationality” intact, and without all of those pesky emotions. (On the other hand, intrapsychic and experiential forms of therapy may work more effectively if clients are not medicated as it is then easier to access and process feelings, utilizing them as food for change).
offers another possibility. In an extensive meta-analysis of psychotherapy research, Dr. Wampold found that the methods and techniques unique to a given therapy account for only a modest portion (roughly 8%) of the overall treatment effects. On the other hand, factors common to all therapies accounted for far more (over 70%) of the effects of treatment. These shared factors include things such as the quality of the therapy relationship (trust, rapport, and therapist empathy), the client’s confidence in the therapist, and the therapist’s confidence in herself and her methods. What this implies is that the efficacy of CBT stems less from its particular methods, and more from the factors it shares with other psychotherapies. Interestingly, Dr. Wampold’s meta-analyses also showed that despite CBT’s privileged status among therapy approaches, its effectiveness is not appreciably better or worse than most other forms of psychotherapy. This is an interesting development, especially considering the volumes of research done on CBT over the years to bolster its resume (and market share).
Other explanations for the apparent effectiveness of CBT have been offered in the past several years. A 2004 paper by psychologist Steven Hayes discusses anomalies in CBT research which indicate that what was once assumed to be a key therapeutic component of CBT, namely, the challenging of clients’ “irrational” thoughts, is not the cause of their improvement after all. In other words, the “active ingredient” of CBT may not be more rational thinking. Some psychologists believe that it is the behavioral components of CBT that are the real catalyst of change. Perhaps, but research by psychologist Bruce Wampold
Research into the efficacy of different types of psychotherapy has focused primarily upon their differences and unique interventions, but Wampold’s research is showing that the quality of psychotherapy hinges more upon the attributes of the therapist than his/her particular methods and theory. Of course, different therapists–like clients–are drawn to different ways of perceiving and engaging the psyche, and finding the right match can be as important in the work of psychotherapy as it is in marriage. Some people have argued that if there is not just one best way to provide psychotherapy, if psychotherapy is as much art as science, should it be considered a science at all, and might you just as well talk to a friend about your problems than see a psychotherapist? Perhaps the best answer is that psychotherapy derives its unique healing power from the fact that it is both science and art. When done well, it is the soul of a healer making contact with the soul and “inner healer” of the client. All of the theory and techniques mean nothing and amount to nothing if this fundamental relationship cannot be established. HB

Farming caused famine, or farming for the future?
The choice is ours to make.

Part Two:
Seeds of Scarcity, Starvation and Suicide
I
n continuation of this series, exploring the links between how our choices in farming practices impact the land, and all who dwell on it, we will now explore the more recent history of the transgenic, or genetically modified (GMO) seed. Just as chemical fertilizers were touted as the miracle invention to save us from starvation, today the bio-technology industry and its supporters will be the first to tell you that the invention of the transgenic seed is a modern day miracle, without which we would all be doomed to starvation. They will tell you pretty sounding stories of farmers who once struggled with crop diseases or pests who, thanks to GMO’s, are producing bigger yields with fewer problems. Unfortunately, there is mounting evidence that these claims cannot be supported by actual facts. Meanwhile, the disturbing reality and unintended consequences of using transgenic seeds are often downplayed, denied or ignored by the mainstream media.
discovery of DNA, the creation of the first recombinant bacteria, (bacteria made from the material of two different species) occurred. In 1978, the first company to work with recombinant DNA technology, Genetech announced the creation of the human protein insulin, by manipulating a strain of E. coli bacteria. Despite concerns about the safety of such technologies, field tests of bacteria genetically engineered to protect plants from frost damage (ice-minus bacteria), as well as pest-resistant strains, were developed. Small scale experimental plantings of these crops began in the late 1980’s, and by the mid 1990’s the first approvals for large scale commercial cultivation occurred. Since that time, the number of GMO crops in the world has increased annually. As stated above, the makers of these technologies, especially the firm Monsanto, the creators of the most well known GM seed technologies, will claim these crops are designed to make farmer’s lives easier. Like producing better yields with fewer pesticides, decreasing world hunger, etc. This would all be great, if it were in any way true. Let’s examine some parts of the world that are heavily planted with GMO crops and see how these claims stand up.
A transgenic or GMO seed contains the genes of other organisms that have been introduced through molecular biology techniques. In other words, genes from a foreign species are added to the organism’s original genome. In the 1970’s, following the

Addiction:
Recognizing the Need for Help Written By Leslie Katz LCSW
N
evada ranks number one in the country in per capita incidences of alcoholism. Upon hearing this, many people ask themselves “how can I tell if someone in my life is an alcoholic, or has a substance abuse problem?” Many of the signs, listed below, apply to all types of addiction such as sexual addictions, gambling and food. However, most of this content specifically addresses alcohol and substance abuse. The first step in recognizing addiction is acknowledging it. Many people find it hard to admit that a family member, friend or colleague has a problem. Acknowledgement of addiction can trigger a feeling of responsibility to provide help to the family member friend or colleague. This can be uncomfortable, because the addict may not be ready to accept their addiction and may be resistant to help. Key behavioral signs to watch for are:
Helping You Find Solutions to Life’s Problems
1. Changes in behavior such as irritability, indifference or apathy 2. Avoidance of social contact 3. Sudden deterioration in finances 4. Phone calls at odd hours 5. Change in friends 6. Deterioration in job performance 7. Changes in eating habits 8. Changes in energy level
Individual & Family Groups
Key physical indicators are found in signs of higher tolerance or withdrawal symptoms. The person may be indulging for a longer period than intended; they may have an inability to refrain from use. Alcoholism is a disease. Keep in mind that the addict is suffering; empathy and caring are the appropriate response, not judgment. If the signs and indicators of alcoholism or substance abuse seem to apply to you or someone close to you, there are many forms of help available. Care includes inpatient and outpatient treatment. Some people prefer the group process, and groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous have been very successful. For people who prefer a one-on-one style of treatment, individual psychotherapy is always available as a way to receive help. HB References:

A Quick Foray Into
HotIn Nevada Springs and California Written by Sean Block and Sara Piccola
H
ot Springs are a source of flowing water that has been heated through contact with hot or molten rock and has emerged to the Earth’s surface. This can happen when groundwater circulates unusually deep within the Earth, and then rises, rapidly.
Mall, the healing waters of Steamboat Villa Hot Springs have been around since the 1800’s, and the spa has been offering numerous services since 1996. From massage, mud wraps, facials, detox, reflexology, acoustic healing and mineral baths, this is the perfect place to go for a break or a day off.
There are countless hot springs scattered throughout Nevada and California (and there are bound to be a few undiscovered gems still out there.) Four of them in the general vicinity of Reno have been safely harnessed as businesses, offering rest and relaxation.
There are well over a dozen unregulated hot springs scattered throughout Nevada and California. These relatively uninhabited springs offer remote relaxation with amazing views for those adventurous enough to seek them out. Because hot springs rely on geothermal hotspots, they tend to be found in groups. One such pocket of activity can be found a few miles outside of Bridgeport, CA. Travertine Hot Springs

boasts a wonderful panoramic view of the Sierra mountains and is located just over a half-mile from town. Turn left on to Jack Sawyer Road, south of Bridgeport, and follow it for about a mile. Limited camping is available.
Help us celebrate… Steamboat Hot Springs proudly celebrates its 15th year since re-opening in 1996.
Buckeye hot springs is to the North of Bridgeport in the Toiyabe National Forest. The remote location hides a brook that cascades into a cave. Water at the source is too hot to bathe, but the pool created by the creek averages a comfortable 103 degrees. Turn off of route 395, onto Twin Lakes Road, North of Bridgeport. Travel seven miles, then turn right past Doc and Al’s resort. Cross the bridge over the creek and continue up the gravel road to the parking area. The springs are a quick hike from the parking lot. Camping is also available at Buckeye Campground. Hot Springs can also be found on or near the Black Rock Playa, about 30 miles outside of Gerlach, NV, and 120 miles outside of Reno. The area houses an abundance of springs, most of which are quite accessible by vehicles and are open for camping. Traigo, Double, and Soldier Meadows hot springs offer good soaking opportunities (Double hot springs is too hot to enter, but a bathing area has been set aside using water from the pool.) Fly Geyser is a constant spout of artesian hot water that has created a wonderful tower of mineral deposits. Unfortunately the geyser is on private land and can only be viewed with permission, or on a tour. However the ease of travel, or lack thereof makes visiting these springs a commitment...or an adventure, depending on your point of view.

he human body can only exist for 5-7 days without water, thus dehydration must be taken seriously. Just exactly what does dehydration mean? Medically, dehydration is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition in which the body contains an insufficient volume of water for normal functioning. To operate efficiently, most people say the body requires about eight large glasses of water per day, based on an estimate of fluid loss during a normal day. Even more water is needed during hot weather, periods of illness and when exercising. Many people simply do not take in this amount of water, preferring instead to get their intake of liquids through coffee, tea, sodas, beer or wine. The problem is that most of these drinks have a diuretic effect which forces the body to eliminate more water than it is actually taking in – causing dehydration. In fact, some believe there is an epidemic of chronic dehydration in the US due to our caffeine and alcohol consumption.
Some symptoms of dehydration include: Feeling dizzy and lightheaded • producing less urine and darker urine • anger, impatience • tiredness • flushed face • irritability • anxiety • depression • snoring • insomnia • short attention spans • cravings for coffee, tea, and alcohol (all diuretics). The two most common signs of dehydration, a dry/sticky mouth or feeling thirsty – are not actually the first signs. When these 2 symptoms occur you are already dehydrated. In chronic dehydration a person may suffer from problems such as gastritis, heartburn, arthritis, headaches, depression, weight problems and even premature aging. Dieting can also sap your water reserves. Beware of diets or supplements, including laxatives and diuretics, that emphasize shedding “water weight” as a quick way to lose weight. Losing water weight is not the same thing as losing actual fat. Remember, drinking water does NOT add calories to your diet and is great for your overall wellbeing. So what can we do to keep healthy and hydrated? Well, the good news is that these conditions may be alleviated or cured simply by drinking more water. People with normal heart and kidney functions should slowly increase their water intake

by drinking two glasses of water one-half hour BEFORE each meal. Then two more glasses of water one to two hours AFTER each meal. Drinking water with a meal dilutes your ability to digest your food.

However, don’t overdo your water intake, which can also be dangerous. Rehydration needs to occur over time, not by overloading your system. The essential thing to remember is “little and often.” A small glass every hour throughout the day is far more beneficial enabling you to utilize the fluid appropriately instead of rejecting it through overload.
A New You This Year
Possible health problems associated with dehydration include: Asthma, Allergies, Heartburn, Migraines, Constipation, Obesity, Fibromyalgia; High Blood Pressure, Lower Back Pain, Type II Diabetes. If you lose enough water to be seriously dehydrated, you also become deficient in electrolytes – the mineral compounds, like salt, needed to maintain a healthy fluid balance and regulate body temperature. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the following dietary response to serious dehydration caused, for example, by diarrhea or emergency. It is designed as a fast replenishment of fluid and electrolyte levels:
By having a Healthier Nervous System which controls everything; by making sure your brain and body’s communication systems are working at their optimum.
Anti-Dehydration Treatment Method: Take two glasses. Into the first put 8 ozs of orange juice, a pinch of salt and half a teaspoon of Honey. Into the second put 8 ozs of bottled or distilled water and one-quarter teaspoon of baking soda. Sip from each glass in turn until they are empty. Remember: there is no quick fix solution and you will still need to drink plenty of water every day to keep hydrated.
“...Dr. Jensen has changed my family’s lives. Our 9-year old daughter was told... she needed jaw surgery, and after seeing Dr. Jensen, the same doctors can’t find the problem...Dr. Jensen and his painless “Pro-Vision” is our 1st and highest recommendation for anyone dealing with physical pain...Thanks a million from the Spanial Family.”
How to Stay Hydrated: Plan to start and end your day with water. Even when sleeping, your body loses water. Drinking a glass of water when you first wake up and last thing before you go to bed can help balance what you lose while sleeping. Also, your body loses water during the day when you perspire, urinate and breathe. If you are more active or are working/exercising in a hot or humid environment, you will need to replenish lost fluids: don’t underestimate the amount of fluids you lose from perspiration. In one hour of exercise your body can lose more than a quart of water, dependent upon exercise intensity and air temperature. Therefore, you should drink before, during and after exercising. For most workouts, water is the best fluid replacement.

And remember: don’t go overboard with water. If you have too much water and too little sodium you can enter into a state known as hyponatremia – which can cause brain cells to become swollen with water, leading to confusion, seizures, coma or death. This can happen to people participating in long distance events who drink large amounts of water but don’t replenish electrolytes (including sodium). So, if you’re participating in an endurance activity, be sure you also consume a sports drink or other energy food that you body can easily digest to provide you with the electrolytes you need!

An easy way to determine whether you are hydrated is simply by the color of your urine. This should be very pale yellow (some medications or supplements may affect this). A dark color indicates that your kidneys are working too hard to concentrate the urine and a greater likelihood that you need more water. August 2011

Feng Shui
Facts & Fiction Written By Rebecca Moore
Answers For Everybody!
I
enjoy hearing from readers who call with questions, and have an interest in Feng Shui. One reader expressed his concerns that I’m using scare tactics to gain business. Of course, this is not my intention. My intent is to inform people of two key points: One: There are two types of Feng Shui--Traditional and New Age. One should not be confused with the other; there is no comparison and they are completely unrelated. Feng Shui is mocked by the media, yet Traditional is seriously employed by the elite. From a Traditional perspective, some New Age methods, such as the use of water fountains and painting doors red, could be considered harmful. Two: You are greatly influenced by your home. Everything is energy. Think of the human body--everyone has their own unique energy field. Your home is similar--it has its own energy field and you, as an occupant living within that field, are affected by its energy. The possible influences of a home, listed in my articles, are not intended to scare anyone but rather to provide examples with which people can identify. “I recently had a client who read and followed the recommendations of some New Age books, including the placement of water fountains. After no improvement, she called me. She had placed a fountain in a harmful energy sector and a family member had a severe car accident. My client quickly implemented the changes I suggested and within five weeks, she received a promotion at work.”

Iodine: The Forgotten Medicine
B
Submitted By Vitamin Connection and Written By Terry Lemerond
efore the introduction of the synthetic drugs that are used today, iodine was one of the most beneficial and universal medicines used by physicians around the world. Iodine was effective for everything: to heal wounds and disease; destroy bacteria, viruses, and pathogens; and to prevent cancer. Once one of the most commonly used medicines in the world, iodine was “forgotten” in favor of new pharmaceutical drugs.
are these elements toxic of the thyroid, they are dangerous for the rest of your body as well. Bromide, for example, can cause depression, headaches, hallucinations or even schizophrenia. Fluoride is also a toxic agent. It blocks the ability of the thyroid gland to concentrate iodine, and there are no studies showing that long-term fluoride intake has any beneficial effects. Dr. David Brownstien, an expert on iodine supplementation, writes that promoting fluoridated water as a way to prevent dental cavities is a “seriously flawed idea”. He found that his patients with breast cancer had higher than normal levels of fluoride in their bodies, while also being iodine deficient.
Now, we see the consequences of forgetting this essential mineral with skyrocketing rates of cancer, an epidemic of thyroid dysfunction, and great difficulties with detoxification. Fortunately, not everyone has forgotten what this amazing mineral can do, and integrative medical practitioners are ushering in an era where iodine is making a comeback. It is a highly effective treatment with virtually no side effects--unlike modern drugs. There are cases and times in which drugs are extremely important, and in fact, life saving. However, these drugs also come with long lists of side effects that often require other drugs to treat the problems they created in the first place! Today, drugs are used for every condition--even vitamin and mineral deficiencies. We are not deficient in drugs. We are deficient in vitamins and minerals, a healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle.
All of these factors combined put your body greatly at need for much more iodine than it is getting.
We Need More Iodine There is a growing consensus among scientists in America that we would have better thyroid function, a lower incidence of cancer and fibrocystic disease of the breast, and overall better health if we would consume more iodine. The established recommended minimum daily requirement for iodine is 150 mcg (micrograms).
How You Have Been Robbed of Your Daily Iodine
People in the U.S. consume an average of 240 mcg of iodine per day, which is slightly above the amount needed to prevent a deficiency syndrome (such as goiter). However, that is not the amount needed for beneficial health effects. People in coastal Japan consume up to 50 mg of iodine (50,000 mcg), which is 50 times more than the average American! Life expectancy in Japan is 82.12 years, the highest of all industrialized countries, while the United States is 78.11 years. The infant mortality rate in Japan is one of the lowest in the world, 2.79 deaths under age one per 1,000 live births, half the infant mortality rate in the United States. Finally, the number of deaths from breast cancer is almost three times higher in the U.S. than in Japan.
In the 1920’s, goiter (enlarged thyroid gland) was very common, especially in the Great Lakes region. To combat this problem, iodine was added to salt. While this did help reduce the incidence of goiter and thyroid problems, today many people are reducing the amount of iodized salt in their diets. Additionally, chlorine, fluoride and bromide, which lower iodine levels in the body by blocking iodine receptors, are increasingly consumed in foods or ingested through environmental exposure. For example, chlorine is now used to purify water in place of iodine. Fluoride is found in toothpaste and water. Bromines replaced iodides in commercial baked goods in the 1980’s. Iodine, the Thyroid, and Breast Diseases
fully understood. Laboratory tests using estrogen sensitive breast cancer cells exposed to iodine have shown that iodine makes them less likely to respond to the negative aspects of estrogen, and therefore, less likely to grow and spread.
Observational studies have noted that there is a connection between thyroid abnormalities and breast cancer. Today, one in seven American women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime. Thirty years ago, when iodine consumption was much higher than it is now, one of 20 women developed breast cancer. Women in Japan, consuming high amounts of dietary iodine, have much lower rates of breast cancer and thyroid problems. When these women emigrate from Japan to the United States and consume a Western diet (containing a fraction of the iodine consumed in Japan), their rates of breast cancer and thyroid diseases increase dramatically.
Fibrocystic breast disease is marked by changes in breast tissue, and discomfort, swelling, and breast tenderness. It is a very common concern for women. Supplemental iodine was found to improve symptoms of fibrocystic breast disease. In fact, in one study, 98 percent of women receiving iodine treatment were pain-free by the study’s end, and 72 percent had improvements in breast tissue. Continued on Page 36
Iodine’s anti-cancer function may well prove to be iodine’s most important benefit. Exactly how it exerts these effects is still not August 2011

Are You a Codependent? The Quiz Written by Candace Andrews, LADC
1. Yes No I am in a significant relationship with someone who is addicted to a substance or a behavior, or someone who is depressed. 2. Yes No I feel responsible for almost everybody and everything, but I feel guilty much of the time.
C
3. Yes No I can’t say “no” without feeling guilty.
odependency is many things. It is a dependency on people - on their moods, behaviors, sickness or wellbeing and their love. It is a paradoxical dependency. Codependents appear to be depended upon, but they are dependent. They look strong but feel helpless, appear controlling but in reality are controlled themselves, sometimes by an illness such as alcoholism. These are the issues that dictate recovery.
4. Yes No I can accurately “read” other people by analyzing their facial expressions and tone of voice. 5. Yes No I try very hard to please people, but I seldom feel that I measure up. 6. Yes No I feel that I have to protect people, especially the addicted or depressed person in my life. 7. Yes No I live in such a way that no one can ever say I’m selfish. 8. Yes No I vacillate between defending the irresponsible person and blowing up in anger at him or her.
Major characteristics of codependents are exhibited within the following categories: caretaking; low self-worth; repression; obsession; controlling; living in denial; depending on others; poor, effective communication; unable to establish strong boundaries; lack of trust; and anger.
9. Yes No I often relive situations and conversations to see if I can think of some way I could have done or spoken better.
With 19 million Americans suffering from depression, either perpetuating or stemming from codependency, it is important to be aware and reflect upon our own behavior.
13. Yes No I tend to see people and situations as “all good” or “all bad.”
Many professionals say the first step toward change is awareness. The second step is acceptance. With that in mind, let’s examine the characteristics of codependency – take this test to see if you take on a codependent likeness:
10. Yes No I feel overly frightened of angry people. 11. Yes No I am terribly offended by personal criticism. 12. Yes No To avoid feeling guilt and shame, I seldom stand up to people who disagree with me.
14. Yes No Though I try to please people, I often feel isolated and alone. 15. Yes No I trust people too much or not at all. 16. Yes No I often try to get people I love to change their attitudes and behavior. 17. Yes No I tend to believe the addicted or depressed person’s promises, even if he or she has broken countless promises before. 18. Yes No Sometimes I have a lot of energy to help people, but sometimes I feel drained, depressed and ambivalent.

Yes No I am defensive when someone points out my faults. 24. Yes No My thoughts are often consumed with the troubles and needs of the addicted or depressed person in my life. 25. Yes No I feel wonderful when I can fix others’ problems, but I feel terrible when I can’t. If you answered “yes” to 5 or fewer statements, you have relatively healthy boundaries, confidence and wisdom in relationships. If you answered “yes” to 6–12 statements, your life is shaped to a significant degree by the demands of needy people in your life. You often feel responsible for the choices others make, and you try too hard to help them make the right ones. You would benefit from the input of a competent counselor or support group. If you answered “yes” to 13 or more statements, you have lost your sense of identity, and you are consumed by the problems of addicted or depressed people in your life. You have to take steps to get well whether that person does or not. Find a counselor or support group to help you gain wisdom and strength. Juice in a box, t h e truth b ehind t h e l a b el s Written By Lissie Lyles
365 Organic Cherry Flavored Juice: Ingredients: Filtered Water, Apple(s) Juice Concentrate Written By Lissie Lyles (Organic), Grape(s) Juice Concentrate (Organic), Aronia Berry Juice Concentrate (Organic), Cherry(ies) Juice (Organic), Flavor(s) Natural cherry. Pros: The majority of the ingredients are organic; there are no artificial sweeteners or added sugar. Cons: Three words: fruit juice concentrate. The process of juicing fruit, concentrates its sweetness, and ups its sugar content. Fruit contains plenty of sugar, and when large amounts of fruit are concentrated into juice, we wind up drinking a much larger serving of fruit and sugar than we would naturally be able to consume if we were just eating the fruit by itself. Most people are unaware that a glass of processed juice contains as much sugar as your average candy bar, most of it fructose, which is more harmful than the sucrose of sugar. Furthermore because commercial fruit juices are pasteurized, they are stripped of vital enzymes, vitamins and minerals, much like refined flour or sugar. Essentially, this juice box is nothing more than liquid sugar; it’s organic liquid sugar, but sugar nonetheless. Oh, and always remember there is nothing “natural” about natural flavors.
Juicy Juice Apple Juice: Ingredients: Apple Juice (Water, Juice Concentrate), Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C), Malic Acid.

Pros: No artificial or added sweeteners. Short ingredient list. Cons: Fruit is not from an organic source, meaning it could contain residue from pesticides. Contains fruit juice concentrate as well.
h, the juice box. Kids go crazy to slurp down this sweet treat; something that parents can feel good about, right? It is an innocent, healthy beverage that is a much better choice when compared with sugar or corn syrup laden sodas. In addition to this, the pretty packaging makes all sorts of claims about the all-natural ingredients, high vitamin quantity, and maybe even a little fortification action with some extra vital nutrients. As usual, the loftier the health claims on the box, the more our suspicions ought to be aroused. As we explore the ingredient lists of the juice products listed below, we begin to understand that they may not be all they were cracked up to be. Behold these so-called “healthy” food products, or as I like to call it, the Juice Box hall of shame:

“all natural” on a food product could be best translated as “junk food posing as health food.” Secondly, notice how fruit is fourth on the ingredient list. High fructose corn syrup adds even more fructose and sugar into the mix, and of course the natural flavoring is red flag. Finally, when a juice product is called something like “red berry” or “blue-raspberry,” or the name of some other fruit that doesn’t exist in reality, it is a pretty sure sign that the product itself is nothing but junk.

Cons: Contains High Fructose corn syrup in addition to juice concentrates. Only two percent of this product actually comes from fruit! Why in the world is canola oil in a bottle of juice?! The majority of the ingredients are food additives, including dyes. None of the ingredients are organic, some could even be GMO. Even though it contains synthetic B vitamins the high sugar and sodium content negates any healthy virtues of this product. This drink is no healthier than the soda or the “purple stuff” it claims to be superior to in its ads.

In short, juice in a box is not a healthy beverage choice. It is recommended that even fresh, unprocessed fruit juices be consumed in servings no greater than an ounce or two at a time and diluted with water; which will provide a healthy amount of fructose, equal to a normal serving of fruit. If you absolutely must consume processed juices, choose organic products that do not contain any added sugars or corn syrup and dilute them with plenty of water, at least eight ounces of water for each ounce of juice. Adding a little fruit juice to water is a great way to encourage kids to drink more water without over loading them with sugar. Using a juicer with fresh fruit ensures that the juice has living enzymes, vitamins and minerals instead of just sugar. Choose real food over food products, and just say no to that box of liquid sugar. HB

What do you do when migraine medications don’t work? Written By Dr. Martin P. Rutherford, D.C.
M
igraines are among the worst of the debilitating conditions that plague society today, and the frequency of occurrence and severity are increasing. The present medical model is two dimensional: 1) the utilization of one of many medications (Phenigren, Imitrex, Reglin, Iboprofin, Fiorinal) for pain relief decreased severity and frequency of headaches, and mitigation of concomitant vertigo and dizziness symptoms, and 2) investigation of the potential and “common” triggers (stress, emotional upset, hormonal imbalances, sleep deprivation, red wine, fermented cheese, chocolate, coffee, etc). This approach is not without its benefits, but is limited in its chemical approach and scope, relative to the correction of the causes of the multiple underlying mechanisms that predispose people to the suffering of migraines. The tradeoff for the relief of migraine symptoms with this approach is of course the long list of moderate to severe side effects from the long term use of these moderate to aggressive pharmaceuticals, and frequently an increase in the severity and frequency of subsequent episodes. The reason for this is that the medications cannot address the causative neurological and metabolic mechanisms of migraines. The pharmaceuticals dilate the arteries, “inhibit” neurotransmitters (brain chemicals--particularly serotonin) and “block” calcium and beta adrenergics. The question that needs to be answered: “What are the mechanisms that are “broke” that cause some people’s arteries to contract and others to dilate, some to need calcium block?”

So how does medication correct the various complex patterns that come to our offices--all with the diagnosis of migraine? It doesn’t; it can’t. Thank goodness that it can manage the symptoms, especially for the people who will never know that the above mechanisms even exist, and that they can frequently be managed or corrected without medication.
The current medicinal model and current theory is leaning heavily toward the cause of all the abnormal chemical mechanisms leading to migraines, due to defective calcium physiology. The functional medicine/chiropractic neurology approach feels the mechanisms are more varied and complex and must address both brain and metabolic abnormalities in the migraine sufferer.
The functional medicine, chiropractic neurologist approach is multi-faceted. An intensive history must be taken, which will uncover the above named triggers and more than likely some of the many that have not been mentioned. A complete, comprehensive functional neurological exam must be performed to determine the exact brain misfiring pattern of that specific migraine sufferer. Specific blood, urine, DNA, and fecal testing may also be needed to determine the metabolic imbalances destabilizing the brain pattern. Finally, a non-drug brain strengthening protocol is implemented to stabilize the imbalances present in that person’s brain, and a non-drug natural approach to that individual’s abnormal metabolic imbalances is also implemented at the same time. This protocol has been very successful in the resolution of migraines. Not all migraines are the same. You must determine the uniqueness of each case and treat the patient, not the diagnosis. To do otherwise is a recipe for failure. HB
The chiropractic neurology viewpoint is that there is a decreased function in an area of the brain that controls blood flow on the same side of another part of the brain that controls dilation and contraction of the blood vessels. This is an electrical, not a chemical (i.e. calcium abnormalities) imbalance. The combination of these two areas not firing “in sync” causes a decrease in blood flow to a part of the brain (different in everyone) and an increase in chemical irritants that overwhelm further mechanisms that normally stop your brain from feeling pain. This neurological complex mechanism--when present-predisposes patients to suffering migraine symptoms. The above abnormal neurological electric imbalances usually co-exist with multiple metabolic imbalances in the predisposed migraine sufferer. These mechanisms are not considered as part of the “cause” for migraine in the medical model. The list is long: undiagnosed thyroid conditions (see article in January 2011 Healthy Beginnings), uncontrolled high or low blood sugar, untreated or undetected anemia’s, GI/liver issues, intestinal issues (Celiac, IBS, inflammatory bowl), autoimmune diseases, fatty acid metabolism, food allergies, hormonal issues in women--and more. Your take away message: it’s not just calcium channel mechanisms.

HERBS&SPICES
The Beauty of Borage Written by Allison Prater
T
he delicate blue star shaped flowers of Borago officinalis, or Borage, are indeed a lovely sight to behold. Not only d o e s t h i s h a r dy annual add aesthetic value to any flower bed, but it offers many benefits to its surrounding garden companions and gentle medicinal properties for the humans who tend it.
The leaves can be used as an adrenal tonic for stress, or to counter lingering effects of steroid therapy. They can also be used for dry, rasping coughs and to stimulate lactation. The fresh juice is helpful for depression, anxiety or grief, and can also be made into a soothing lotion for dry itching skin. Poultices made from the leaves are cooling and soothing when applied to external inflammations and swellings. The oil extracted from the seeds can be applied externally for the treatment of eczema. The oil is also taken internally as an alternative to evening primrose oil for rheumatic or menstrual disorders, such as irregularity, or for irritable bowel syndrome, or even as an emergency hangover cure.
According to the great 16th century herbalist, John Gerard, there was a saying among Roman soldiers who drank borage wine before going into battle, “ego borago gaudia semper ago,” it means “I, borage always brings courage.” Today, it is known that borage stimulates the adrenal gland, triggering the production of adrenalin, the fight or flight hormone that stirs the body to action in times of stress. The Roman scholar Pliny believed the herb to be an anti-depressant, as did the Greek Dioscorides who wrote in his De Materia Medica that borage will, “cheer the heart and lift the depressed sprits.” The leaves, flowers and seeds of the plant may all be used for culinary or medicinal purposes. The large, fleshy, and slightly furry leaves taste similar to cucumber and can be added to salads, soup stocks, fresh juices or tea. They may be used raw, steamed, or sautéed like spinach. The stems are edible as well. The leaves and stems enhance cheeses, fish, poultry, most vegetables, iced beverages, pickles, and salad dressings. They blend well with dill, mint and garlic. If the texture of the leaf is bothersome, it can be used for flavoring and removed from the dish before serving.

The tannin content of borage makes it slightly astringent and slightly constipating, which is why it is used to treat bowel trouble. The mucilage is responsible for its mild expectorant actions, which explains its use in treating coughs and lung disorders. Its high vitamin C and essential fatty acid content could account for its attributes as an antidepressant. The flowers have traditionally been used in wines and cough syrups. They are said to beautify the skin when eaten regularly. The flowers make a beautiful garnish for all kinds of dishes. The cool, subtle cucumber like flavor lends itself nicely to iced teas and salads. Candied borage flowers make an elegant presentation on any pastry or dessert tray. Borage does not keep well frozen or dried. It can also be preserved through vinegars, tinctures, honey, and infusions.

In the garden, the bright blue flowers are enjoyed by bees and other pollinators. Just as borage is said to give strength and courage to humans, it is also said to increase resistance to pests and disease of its neighboring plants. It is an especially good companion plant for strawberries, drawing in pollinators to help produce a bountiful harvest, while acting as a magnet for garden pests that would otherwise be feasting on the precious berries.

Borage is hardy enough to tolerate more than just a little nibbling. Borage grows easily from seed, but a little goes a long way. These plants will grow to about three feet tall and two feet wide, so let them have a lot of space. They will re-seed easily, if left to their own devices, and will return year after year; they will need to be thinned and maintained to prevent them from taking over everything. They are not picky about soil and like to have lots of sun. Borage makes a great indoor plant as well. Just give it a nice big pot, good soil and plenty of water and sun. Below is a recipe for Crystallized Borage flowers, a sweet and delicate treat to enhance any dessert, or to be enjoyed on its own. Begin by heating the honey on low until it is barely warmed through, add the flowers and continue heating for 15-20 minutes, keeping the honey warm but not allowing it to get hot enough to simmer. Strain out the flowers and place them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with waxed paper. Cover them loosely with another piece of wax paper, to protect the flowers from dust, while still allowing room for proper air circulation. The excess honey may be stored in a jar and used as an herbal honey. Allow the flowers to sit for one week, or dehydrate in a dehydrator on the lowest setting for three days.

Dust the honey covered flowers with sugar; a very light coating will do just fine. Spread the flowers out in a single layer on wax paper and allow them to dry for one to two days. Store them in a glass jar until ready to use; they will keep for two to four weeks at room temperature or for several months if refrigerated. HB References: 1. She was indicating a slender black wasp astride what appeared to be a dead cutworm. The worm was several times the weight of the wasp, but the wasp dragged it along at a pretty good clip, holding the prey with its front legs and propelling itself with its back legs.
hen my friend Pam Leach was halfway through the garden tour I require of all my guests, she asked if I’d seen the wasp.
I was in the midst of a monologue on the distinction between determinate and indeterminate tomatoes, and I thought Pam might want to change the subject. My daughters have explained to me that I can become tiresome on certain topics.
I hate cutworms, and wasn’t about to feel sorry for it, not even when Pam explained that the cutworm wasn’t dead. The wasp had paralyzed it with a few well-placed stings, and she (it’s always a she doing this work) would drag it to a hole she’d prepared, lay a single egg on it, and seal the cradle--or the tomb, depending on where your sympathies lie.
I’m not a fan of science fiction, but I played along. “Isn’t that the sequel to The Fly? I haven’t seen it, but the first one was one of my daughter’s favorite movies.”
But wait--there’s more. Pam says her research suggests the hard-working wasp is often followed by midges. The wasp tries to fight them off, but while she’s busy spiffing up the hole she’s provided for her egg, the quick midges often sneak in

After mating, my wasp will spend her entire life this way, providing each egg with its own little hole and its own cutworm, which she often drags several yards. I wondered if I might need to do a little more for my own children when they go out into the world, my current plan being to give each of them a ham sandwich wrapped in a road map.

Thread-waisted wasps differ from more commonly known wasp species like yellow-jackets. Most of them live solitary lives, and they’re food purists. Most species predate one species of insect; some choose grasshoppers, some caterpillars, and so on. The social wasps get sloppy in their eating habits; although they do eat some of the pests we’d like to get rid of, they also go for carrion and garbage.

BOOKREVIEW GROWING THE POSITIVE MIND With the Emotional Gym By Dr. William Larkin
Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt
D
r. Larkin’s research shows that when people create an “UpSpiral” of positivity, it enriches individual lives and promotes personal productivity. Over the years, he has learned that when we focus on engaging our unique personal strengths, they grow enormously and begin to undo, heal and manage our weaknesses. As we create new goals, personal clarity, direction and vision, our weaknesses seem to recede into the background and become much less pronounced. He believes that we focus too much on “fixing” weaknesses. We should focus more on our strengths because that conscious focus automatically “grows” our strengths.
percent of the time. The third promise (StrengthSmart) is that you can actually find out what your own personal strengths are and realize that those strengths are at the core of becoming happier and more content in your life. The fourth promise (Vibecore) which is at the very heart of you, can grow and increase, and as it does you become more clear about what you want in your life and more able to create it. The fifth promise (FuturePac) is that if you follow this process, you’ll emerge with a sense of direction and vision for your life. The sixth promise is that your vision will lead you to a sense of your passion. The seventh promise is that the knowledge of your passion will lead you to vital friends and connections that can serve as a Master Mind, and will help you to become conscious of the most beneficial way to proceed in all areas of your life, and therefore attract what you want.
Start by taking the Positive Mind Test (available in the book or online), then put that information away and read the book. You’ll learn how to apply the Emotional Gym, how to “pulse” four positive emotions (love, joy, peace, and gratitude) and thereby get into that Upspiral. This practice helps us to grow “positive emotional muscle” so that we can not only live a happier, more fulfilling life, but when we really need that positive mental attitude, that can-do mindset, we’ll have it.
We all have a pattern of strengths and weaknesses that were woven into our neural pathways very early on. Research shows that when we know what we really want, and believe we’re going to get it, and stay open to a variety of ways this can happen, we enter into a state of moving meditation that is known as flow. By learning how to increase and sustain our positive vibes, we attract what we desire.
Research shows that when we stay in a positive attitude we live longer; and that when we spend a lot of time in a negative mindset, we’re twice as likely to have a stroke or heart attack. Not only that, but as in the Law of Attraction, when we are thinking positively, we get more of what we want. It comes to us easier and much more quickly. We’re healthier; we solve problems faster and we’re more creative and score higher on every test of well-being and life satisfaction. If that isn’t enough, research shows that with a positive attitude, we thrive at a cellular level. If every thought has its own vibrational frequency, and that “signal” floods all of our cells every time we think a thought, we certainly want to be thinking thoughts that create beneficial chemicals and hormones, not the opposite.
Dr. Larkin’s research on neuroplasticity shows that as new thoughts are repeated, new pathways are created in the brain. These brain pathways are not set in stone. They are “plastic” in that they can change. We are not stuck with our old thoughts and attitudes. We have the power to change them at any time. This information makes it possible to live a brighter, happier, more fulfilling and more authentic life. This is the applied use of positive psychology, with the purpose of increasing happiness itself, by focusing on the workings of our brains. These are practical and meaningful exercises that really work. Each chapter concludes with a “workout,” an exercise that shows you how to put what you’ve learned into practice.
This book promises you seven things, which make up the seven chapters. The first promise is that you can grow positive emotional muscle, and that as you practice, it grows stronger and stronger just like physical muscle. You’ll learn how to “pulse” these emotions through your workout in the Emotional Gym. The second promise is that you can stay in that UpSpiral 100

The basic thought behind skin brushing is to brush dry skin, in order to boost circulation and remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin so that it may more effectively remove toxins from the body. Dry skin brushing is considered to be the most effective natural lymphatic cleanser available. Lymph fluid delivers nutrients to cells and carries waste away from cells. Unlike the circulatory system, which has the heart to pump blood and the digestive tract, which uses peristaltic action (contractions) to move waste; the lymphatic system relies on outside forces such as good circulation, bodily movement and effective breathing to properly function. Due to our sedentary lifestyles and poor diets, many people have sluggish lymphatic systems and don’t even know it.

Iodine: The Forgotten Medicine
Continued from Previous Page although firm and vigorous motions should be used, the body should feel stimulated, not sanded, afterward.
Continued from Page 22
Following a skin brushing session with a hot bath adding essential oils, powdered ginger or Epsom salts and baking soda is a wonderful way to rejuvenate the body.
Supplemental Iodine Forms and Dosage Different tissues in the body prefer iodine in different forms. Thyroid tissue best absorbs iodine as potassium iodide. Breast tissue, in contrast, takes up iodine when it is in the form of molecular iodine. Therefore, for optimal total body support, iodine supplements should contain more than one type of iodine.
The skin brush should be made of all natural materials and should be washed frequently and dried in natural sunlight. A good quality skin brush should last a couple of months or more with regular care and use. It is important when choosing a skin brush to pick one with bristles that are not too stiff, so that the skin will be stimulated but not overworked.
According to Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., author and iodine expert who has treated thousands of patients in his clinic, states, “As I started to use larger amounts of iodine (12.5-50 mg/day) to achieve whole body sufficiency, I began to see positive results in my patients. Goiters and nodules of the thyroid shrank, cysts on the ovaries became smaller and began to disappear, patients reported increased energy, and metabolism was increased as evidenced by my patients having new success in losing weight. Libido improved in both men and women. People suffering from brain fog reported a clearing of the fogginess. Patients reported having vivid dreams and sleeping better. Most importantly, those with chronic illnesses that were having a difficult time improving began to notice many of their symptoms resolving.”
Having a properly functioning lymphatic system not only improves your health at a cellular level, but also improves your appearance. With regular skin brushing, people report that the skin takes on a natural glow and healthy appearance. People also report that their skin feels more hydrated and that they use less lotions that they did before which makes sense since the oil glands will be free from debris and able to lubricate the skin more effectively. It is also noted that skin brushing improves cellulite, which is in part a buildup of toxins in the blood that would be normally removed by a well functioning lymphatic system. Dry skin brushing is considered to be an essential part of any intestinal cleansing program. By improving the ability of the skin to release toxins and improving lymphatic flow, skin brushing promotes the release of toxins in other areas of the body and enhances the effectiveness of Colon Hydrotherapy. It is even reported to cleanse mucoid deposits from cells directly into the colon.
The following conditions are routinely treated with iodine by Dr. Brownstien with effective results, few minor side effects and no toxicity; breast disease, diabetes, fatigue, infections, ovarian cysts, migraine headaches, fibrocystic breast, thyroid disorders and vaginal infections. The most common side effects encountered with high levels of iodine are acne, metallic taste in the mouth, sneezing and increased saliva. These reactions are extremely rare, occurring in less than 5 percent of his patients.
With all these benefits, and the little amount of time and money needed to invest in this process, dry skin brushing may be one of the most effective detoxification processes available to us, and you can do it at home! Why not start a skin brushing ritual today? HB
If we all want optimal health, we must not allow iodine to be the forgotten medicinal mineral. It must be remembered and cherished for its amazing health and protective benefits. Remember iodine the next time you are considering what to include in your family’s wellness plan! HB

ASTROLOGYHEALTH
ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOK vital, life-giving ideas in a time of profound change Written By Eric Francis
Horoscope for Health | July - 2011
M
ercury is retrograde through nearly all of August, from the 2nd to the 26th. The theme of this retrograde is: pay attention to what matters. The retrograde begins in Virgo, and then Mercury walks back into mid-Leo. Along the way, Mercury is making aspects that resemble a movie projector coming in and out of focus. One reminder is--figure out what matters, and when you don’t know, pause. Early in the retrograde, there is a temptation to rebel against something, though you may be working with incomplete or incorrect information. Rather than stage an insurrection against someone who has your best interests at heart, who is devoted to you and helpful, I suggest you take your time and make sure you know what you’re talking about. Aries (March 20-April 19) If you don’t feel like getting dragged into all kinds of emotional dramas this month, I suggest you proceed slowly and carefully. Make sure you know who has what agenda--and closer to the point, make sure you know your agenda. One potential trap for you is falling prey to your own insecurity, then over-reading into something you don’t understand, which turns out to be based on your own confusion and misunderstanding. It would benefit you greatly to look at your life, and the world around you, through the widest possible lens. Try to see the whole picture, so that you’re less inclined to take things personally when they’re not directed at you. You will have one occasion after the next to realize that what’s happening in your environment is not all about you--which will come as a great relief. Taurus (April 19-May 20) This is a time to stretch, to open up new territory in your life, and most of all to widen your circle of friends. You are changing; it’s time to surround yourself with people who reflect the ways in which you’re growing. Whatever your social role has been in the past (group coordinator, token shy person, the reasonable one) you’re likely to be taking on a new position among the people who are closest to you. To many you will seem like you’re becoming a revolutionary by refusing to put up with the same ridiculous social rules you might have thought were wonderful just a year ago. Don’t make excuses for why you want to take more liberty. Remember, anyone you think deserves to be impressed is unlikely to be worth the effort. Gemini (May 20-June 21) You know it’s time to make some changes at home, but in truth there is no rush. Make sure you understand what you want to rearrange and why; and carefully consider your options for doing so. You may discover somewhat larger goals than redecorating; you seem to be reaching a psychological limit of some kind. But over the next month, you will be able to see your situation a number
Visit www.HBmag.com
of different ways. What seems so dire today may seem a lot less important a month from now, but by then you will have clarified what it is you want to accomplish. Let the impulse phase pass; pay attention to what you keep telling yourself you want to change. Cancer (June 21-July 22) Mars enters your sign the first week of the month, which will provide plenty of energy for you to pursue your goals. But I have a few words of temperance and caution, one of which is to make a special effort to get along with women. By that I mean, stand your ground but avoid unnecessary conflicts. Generally you will see people go to one extreme or the other--for example, push people around for the sake of it (not a good idea this month) or back down when they really need to stand their ground. Part of growing involves making sure that you hold open the space to be yourself with the people around you--no matter how powerful they make themselves out to be, or how influential you may perceive them as being. Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) What seems to be a financial issue is likely to be nothing of the kind. It may start there, but once you get past the illusion that money is the actual matter, or that money sets a limit of some kind, you’re likely to discover that you have many more options and a lot more freedom than you previously thought. Life really is a matter of deciding what is important to you and then being determined to make it happen. Reciting the mantra of a bad economy or bad job market does not create opportunity; it merely blinds you to it. If you find yourself giving yourself negative messages (which are often excuses for not daring to make an effort), there’s always time to stop, think and decide what you really want. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) How can you be sure if a loved one is telling you the truth? Or similarly, how can you be certain that someone you’re interested in is worth the effort? The answer is that it usually takes some

August 2011
time, making conscious observations and then checking your perceptions. Most of the time when we go wrong with someone else, we ignored information that would have served us well. We learn things about people over time, and we don’t use it--and this counts for both the ways in which people reveal themselves to be deceptive, or alternately, loving and supportive. In the immortal words of my old therapist Joe, the thing to do is use what you know. Don’t pretend; don’t ignore; track your thinking and test whether you were noticing the obvious, and whether you’re putting it to work. Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) This is a beautifully ambitious moment for you, but timing is everything. You might not be able to act on your plans immediately, for a number of reasons (unusual delays, everyone is out of town, the so-and-so business doesn’t do anything in August, etc.). That said, you will want to be ready when the time comes to take action, so no matter how sleepy or disorganized ‘the world’ seems to be this month, make sure you’re getting your ideas in order, and using your time to understand your most authentic goals. That said, you may find yourself encountering unusual opportunities over the next few weeks, and I suggest you be open to them. But please don’t sign anything or make any big promises until Mercury stations direct on Aug. 26, preferably holding off till a few days later. Till then, count everything as a bold experiment. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) This is going to be an interesting month--promise. Your life will be full of intrigue, surprises and challenges, but I suggest you practice a little healthy detachment. It’s possible to have experiences without getting caught up in them; it’s possible to meet and experience people without getting overly involved. Be cautious of any form of negativity that creates attachment. This is one of the most alluring, dangerous emotional traps going. If you find yourself in an emotional environment that’s not healthy, make a decision and move on. The more you do that, the easier it will be to open up to the flow of positive energy. Intensity, by itself, is not a ‘good’ thing, but it can be an addictive one. Love is gentler, easier and more nourishing. Keep deciding which you really want, and you’re likely to have more of it. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) You don’t need to set your professional goals aside--you just need to know what they are, which will tell you where you actually stand. You’re doing a lot better than you think: you’ve made more progress than you think, and attained more visibility than you’ve noticed-if such is meaningful to you. There is an aspect of your design scheme that needs to be reviewed, the basis for which is making sure you’re not trying to live up to your parents’ expectations, or compensate for their perceived failures. Let them free, and set yourself free. They have no place in the life that you’re living now. What you may discover is some of your most annoying hang-ups are not actually yours, and when you discover that, you’re never far from letting them go entirely. You just need to want to. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) You may feel like you’ve met your match--but I suggest leaving fantasies of combat, confrontation or even competition out of your diet. There are two main influences driving you now--one is somewhat aggressive (which may feel like someone is being
August 2011
Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®
aggressive with you) and the other is about mellowing out. You’ve been wound a little tightly lately, and you can afford to relax. I don’t just mean relax and take a day off; I mean relax your mind, and your approach to existence. Any time you feel yourself trying to plan out your whole life, or get control over every situation, remember, you have alternatives. They’re not substitutes--they are better possibilities than pretending to have power that you don’t have. The opposite to control is exploring your options. You have many. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) Take a breath; the pressure you’ve been under for the past few years is over. Part of what you were addressing was the constant demand of circumstance. Now, you have the option to focus your energy inwardly. In fact it’s more than an option--it’s a basic necessity of growth, because from this point on, your growth will develop from the inside out. This method doesn’t work for everyone, I know. Most people need to be bullied by their external environment, by people close to them or by encountering worldly limits in order to have the courage to make changes. This is not a luxury you need; in fact it’s not a luxury at all. The more you cultivate and develop inwardly, which includes facing your fears, the more the world will hold out for you. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) This is a creative, experimental time for you--and that includes exploring your erotic nature. But how do you explore in a way that’s responsible? How do you address guilt, fear and other forms of negativity? The answer is yes. You are able to respond (that’s what responsible means) and it’s possible to call negativity what it is. Ask yourself: what emotion do you elect to lead the way? I nominate curiosity, with creativity as campaign manager. Let your curiosity guide you. It is okay to want to know who someone is, how something feels, or to discover how you’ll grow or change as a result of having a certain experience. It’s okay to have that experience rather than just think about it. You’re under no obligation to be a prisoner of fear, and you have plenty of passion to share. HB

THE HEALTHY ADVENTURER
KIDSCORNER Written By Ariana Purcell
I
am going into eighth grade and I am a little nervous this year. I only have one more year in middle school and then I go into high school! What grade are you going into this year? How are you feeling about this coming year? Are you nervous too? I began my healthy adventures in 1990. By combining bicycling, kayaking and hiking, I would eventually travel four times around the earth. I am 70 years old and have not been sick since 1972. It is never too late to live a healthy, active and adventuresome life, as you will read in a series of articles.
This school year, I am actually going to transfer to a “middle school.” My last school had its middle school as part of the elementary school; it was a K-8 school. I have been the new girl before; but this year, I am actually excited to go to my new school! Making new friends and fitting in is the hard part, but I know that I can do it!
Kayaking through Siberia, Part 8
School will begin soon, and so will early morning wake-ups. My Aunt Hylary’s recipe for breakfast tortillas will give you the energy you need to get through the school day.
The rushing water grabbed the boat now, robbing me of any control. Then, it happened. It happened so fast, I could not recall actually falling out of the kayak. Suddenly, I was immersed in water. Is this the end of me? My thoughts rushed back to my wife and my sons. Will we ever see each other again?
Breakfast Tortillas What you will need: - Whole Grain Tortilla
Fear? There was no time for that, if I wanted to get out alive. What happened next appeared as a miracle to me, in fact two of them. By the time I reached the surface, the current had swept me into sort of an eddy. While I gasped for air, what was that object to my right--my boat? Yes! No, not carried on by the current, but right next to me! Don’t get away now! I quickly grabbed it and held on to it. With air cushions on both sides, it was practically unsinkable. Now what was that thing to my left? Unbelievable, my paddle! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am accustomed to a life of gratitude, but this was a real special moment. If I did not die of hypothermia, I could continue with my trip. With my right hand on the boat filled with water and my left hanging on the paddle, I had only my legs left for swimming action. My clothes, in particular the down jacket, were water soaked like a sponge. Thus, painfully slow, in undulating motion, I moved towards the ice barrier on the riverbank. Finally, I felt ground and heaved the kayak partly onto the shore.
- Peanut Butter - Bananas - Milk of your choice - Honey - Cinnamon - Nutmeg Directions: Spread the peanut butter on a tortilla, add a few slices of the banana and pan fry. In another pan, sauté the bananas in milk, honey, cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg. When the tortilla is warm, place it on a plate and pour the banana mix over the tortilla. Enjoy : ) HB
So good so far! What next? I had to get the water out of the boat. It was still too heavy to flip. While I hectically bailed, I wondered about the condition of my belongings. HB To be continued… With joyful passion for peace and health, Hans, the Healthy Adventurer

It never fails that no matter how much I think I know about alternative healing and nutrition, I always learn something new! For example, the toxic ‘anti-aging’ sunscreen I’ve been putting on my face... FULL of all the wrong ingredients! And, I discovered Dr. Gerber, a doctor in HB who practices the way ‘medicine’ should be practiced, preventatively!! Your magazine helps me create and maintain a greater awareness of all the noxious ingredients to which we are exposed on a daily basis, all under the guise of being ‘healthy’! I’m a nurse and work in an environment that helps me appreciate my health even more. I‘ve turned a few of my coworkers on to your publication– and they too, are now living greener, healthier lives. Learning from Your Dreams Written By Andy Drymalski, EdD

reams are the voice of your inner self, guiding you to your home. They arise from a source of wisdom within the personality that is greater than your conscious mind. As a result, their guidance more nearly reflects your true needs, potentials and love. In learning from your dreams, you draw closer to your destiny.
fitting in must be abandoned for a more personally congruent path. This dreamer is being challenged to live the life that only she can live. Guideline Two: the other people in your dreams generally symbolize a part of yourself that is like that person. To illustrate, let’s say that you dream you are operating a bulldozer, knocking down an old house owned by your mother who was known to be very opinionated. Reflecting on the dream using guideline number two, you realize that you can be quite opinionated yourself. In fact, just the day before you got into an argument with a friend caused in good part by your own stubbornness. Your mother’s house is an extension of her approach to life. To tear it down symbolizes tearing down this old, outworn personality trait within you. Your deeper self is telling you that it is time to dismantle your tendency to be opinionated.
Dreams speak a language of symbol and metaphor. When you are unfamiliar with this language, your dreams can seem nonsensical or bizarre. However, if you take the time to record and reflect upon your dreams, to note their progression in relation to the course of your life, their underlying structure and meaning begins to emerge. As you learn their language, a more dynamic relationship with your core personality is forged, and you feel more alive. Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist, devoted his life to the study of the dreams and human psychology. His theories represent the most comprehensive and well-researched approach to dream analysis available to us. Below are two guidelines of Jungian dream analysis that can jumpstart your work with dreams.
A young man dreamed, “I am in a forest along the bank of a river. I set up my tent which is round and prepare a campfire. In a tree nearby is an owl, watching me. I begin to cook a meal and as I do, I hear a voice say, ‘I would like some of your food.’ I look around but see no one. I then realize that it is the owl that said this. I invite the owl to join me, and it does so.” In this dream the owl, a creature known for its wisdom and ability to see in the dark (that is, into the unknown), represents an aspect of the dreamer himself. Specifically, it is a symbol of the spiritual and healing core of the total personality. In dreams, food is usually a symbol of emotional and spiritual nourishment. In giving attention to the owl, the dreamer nourishes his inner being, which, in turn, will nourish him. This is what happens when you take the time to learn from your dreams. You nourish, and are nourished by, the wisdom of your soul.
Guideline One: the perspective of your conscious mind (or ego) is symbolized in your dreams by yourself, or the vehicle (car, boat, plane, etc.) that you are in. For example, a woman dreamed, “I am on a passenger ship that is sinking. The other people seem to be oblivious to the danger and ignore my warnings. I find a small raft and jump overboard with it. I paddle away from the ship and later watch it go under.” In this dream, the dreamer and the ship are symbolic of how she has been approaching, or “moving through” life. The passenger ship is a vehicle of mass transportation, which suggests that her beliefs and value system tend to be societal in viewpoint. As the sinking ship suggests, a life lived primarily in accordance with society’s values can only take you so far. As you mature, you are more and more challenged to discover and live by your own values, beliefs and calling. The security that comes with

Farming caused famine, or farming for the future? The choice is ours to make. Continued from Page 14
In the US Midwest farm belt, where there are an abundance of GMO Round-up Ready corn and soybean crops, there was a dramatic rise in crop diseases, compared to non-GMO crops. The corn and soy are often grown for animal feed, and likewise, there was a dramatic increase in infertility, miscarriage and still birth among dairy cows that ate the RR feed. Round-up ready crops have been genetically modified to be resistant to the active ingredient in Round-up herbicide, Glyphosate. The idea being, if you plant a field full of RR corn, you can spray down the whole field with round-up, the weeds will die, and the corn will not be affected. Recently Dr. Don Huber, retired cornel, plant pathologist, and Professor Emeritus at Purdue University, wrote a letter to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsak warning of this rise in crop and animal disease and it’s link to a newly discovered pathogen associated with Round-up and Round-up ready seeds. It is rare for an infectious agent to promote disease in both plants and mammals.
Unfortunately, the legacy of the transgenic seed becomes even darker and more tragic outside of the US. In India, the introduction of BT cotton has devastated the lives of small farmers and dominated the cotton seed market. BT cotton seed is aggressively marketed with claims that it is genetically modified to resist the common cotton pest bollworm, reducing the need for pesticides and increasing yields for farmers. The farmers often have to take out high-interest loans from private money lenders in order to purchase these seeds, which can cost as much as ten times the amount of conventional cotton seed. They are assured that they will be able to pay these loans back because of the higher yields they will be producing. What they are not told is that BT cotton needs extra amounts of a scarce resource: water. Many farmers are dependent upon the rainfalls to bring water to their crops, and without irrigation the crops either fail due to drought in the dry regions, or are washed away by monsoons in other parts of the country. The claims of BT cotton, reducing the use of pesticides, proved to be untrue as well. To make matters worse, there is a new strain of root rot associated with this crop that has killed other crops planted in beds that formerly grew BT cotton, making crop rotation impossible.
Huber states, “We are now seeing an unprecedented trend of increasing plant and animal diseases and disorders. This pathogen may be instrumental to understanding and solving this problem. It deserves immediate attention with significant resources to avoid a general collapse of our critical agricultural infrastructure.” Despite these grave warnings, secretary Vilsak has all but ignored Huber and the concerns of farmers; instead, he approved the introduction of new GMO seeds into the market; sugar beets and alfalfa.

In some regions it is now impossible to purchase conventional cotton seed. After the crop inevitably fails, the farmers go through a few more seasons of borrowing money at high interest, and being unable to pay down the debt. With little to no relief from their government, and in desperation, many of

these farmers have taken their own lives by consuming the very pesticides they went into debt to purchase. The suicide rate of poor, rural farmers has become so widespread, it is estimated as many as a quarter million cotton farmers have committed suicide in the last 16 years. In one year alone, the suicide rate equated to one farmer suicide ever 30 minutes. Currently, farmers are addressing their suicide notes to the prime minister, in hopes that their final words may aide surviving farmers.
of contamination would not only affect the alfalfa but also the animals that eat it, and the humans who eat the meat or dairy from those animals. Monsanto has even taken to suing farmers whose crops have been contaminated by the RR strain. Many farmers who grow conventional crops save their seeds for the next years planting. Monsanto claims that if these saved seeds exhibit any of the genes from their “patented technology” that they have the right to sue these farmers for copyright infringement. Hundreds of Farmers have been affected by these unjust lawsuits, but thankfully they are banding together and fighting back. The Public Patent Foundation (PubPat), a non-profit legal services organization, has filed a lawsuit on behalf of over 60 organic farmers and associated organizations. The farmers want assurance from Monsanto that they will not be sued for patent infringement if their farms become contaminated by the company’s GMO crops.
Monsanto and its defenders have aggressively tried to deny any responsibility for this crisis, while downplaying the scope of this tragedy. They have cited studies that have manipulated data in order to make the suicide rate seem much lower than it is, by only counting farmers as those who formerly own title to their land. Most of the suicides occur among farmers who are not land owners, and so they are not counted. These doctored studies also count wealthy farmers who can afford to irrigate their land, making the crops yield appear greater. They pass blame on the Indian Government for not providing debt relief, which is part of the problem. However, since the Indian cotton market was opened to global market (in part due to pressure from foreign multi-nationals) the price of cotton has been driven down, while corporations such has Monsanto have been allowed to dominate the cotton market by controlling the very resource you need to grow cotton: seeds. These studies go on to suggest that farmers themselves are to blame because they lack money and water. Monsanto also argues, that it says, right on the box, that BT cotton seeds require irrigation in order to thrive. Right on the box it says so, IN ENGLISH. Many people affected by this tragedy are barely literate in their native language, let alone of a foreign one.
Until the hazards of GMO crops can be clearly assessed, and the associated problems addressed, we would be unwise to allow ourselves to be bamboozled by Monsanto’s fairy stories. Compared to the firsthand accounts from farmers all over the world, the biotech industry sounds more and more like a bunch slick-tongued, snake-oil selling quacks. For more information on the issues addressed in this article, see the references below. The series will continue in next month’s issue with examples of farming techniques that are truly healing for the land and those living on it, offering us an alternative vision of a vibrant future. The approval of GMO alfalfa is very dangerous for our home state of Nevada. Alfalfa is a hardy crop that has no trouble growing in our region, and does not need its genes modified in order to thrive. Even if the majority of farmers continue to plant non-GMO alfalfa crops, if there is a GMO crop in the vicinity, wind and pollinators can transfer the RR strain, causing transgenic contamination. Considering the health dangers associated with RR crops that were mentioned above, this risk

Eczema: The Itch That Won’t Go Away Written by Jennifer Gray, Pharmacist
E
czema comes in many shapes and sizes; but one thing is constant, the ITCH. It is always there taunting its victims, urging them to abandon all control and scratch. “It feels so good to scratch that I keep on doing it even though I know it will hurt more when I stop,” says one teenage sufferer. What can be done about this increasingly common skin affliction? First of all, education and understanding the reasons for the disease go a long way to treating it. Environment, diet and heredity all contribute to the development of eczema. It is estimated that 15 million people in the United States currently suffer from some form of this disease. The National Institutes of Health estimate that 10 to 20 percent of all infants will suffer from eczema at one time or another until age five. Between the ages of five and fifteen there is a significant improvement in skin health.
such as Lavender and Rosemary, soothe and cool the skin while encouraging dry skin to produce its own oil. Once an eczema episode gets going, it is impossible to stop. Preventing one from beginning and regularly moisturizing the area are the best lines of defense. A healthy diet rich in Omega-3, limited stress, and avoidance of known allergens can help reduce the frequency and severity of eczema attacks. HB
Eczema covers a wide range of symptoms and characteristics. In children, the most common form is atopic eczema. Like most eczema, the itch is the first symptom. Once the child begins to scratch, a rash develops and worsens as the scratching continues. Often an infection settles into the rash from the germs and irritants hiding under the fingernails. Common sites for childhood eczema are cheeks, forehead, scalp, inner arms, back of knees, and trunk. No skin area is immune to the rash, though. Treating eczema in children is often difficult and frustrating. Steroidal creams, antihistamines, and petroleum products are frequently prescribed to stop the itch and trap in skin moisture. Natural skin care products, like Nature’s Baby Face and Body Moisturizer, contains emollients aloe and Shea butter which sooth and moisturize the skin. While it cannot cure eczema, a regimen of moisturizing with products such as these can lessen the itching by increasing the moisture and make the skin look and feel better.

Adults may first notice skin, especially on exposed skin like the hands or feet, become dry and flaky with red patches. Eventually the patches begin to itch and burn. Sometimes the eczema is more of a red bump that may be filled with clear fluid. Scratching releases the fluid making the rash appear wet. Scratching, as in the case of childhood atopic eczema, leads to more irritation and itching, and the cycle goes on and on. Malcolm’s Miracle Hand and Body Treatment uses the natural healing powers of hemp seed oil to increase skin’s moisture and repair the affected patch. Rich in Omega-6 Gamma-Linolenic Acid, Malcolm’s Miracle absorbs easily and quickly into the skin. Essential oils,
