PUBLISHERLETTER

COVERSTORY

February is traditionally dedicated as the month to announce your affections to those we share intimacy. Our cover is the ultimate symbol of love and devotion, how fitting we start series of articles that will explore infinite definitions of love. What better time than now to also discuss the ramifications of being honest. Honesty is said to be a primary and necessary ingredient in maximizing human potential, if this is true then why is lying and spinning the truth so culturally accepted? How does it feel intellectually and emotionally when you know you are being lied to? This topic is one we all deal with on a daily basis; it will be explored this month in the article titled “A Culture That Lies.” Be sure to read Dr. Andy Drymalski’s article on “Psychology’s New God” a blend of two psychological approaches behaviorism and cognitive therapy. Coaching is not new, top athletes, leaders of nations, CEO’s, actors, and vocal artists hire coaches to keep them on track, stretch their limits and take them to the top of their fields. Now more acceptable, there are coaches for health and wellness, read Deanna Mandichak’s article on “What is Health Coaching?” On the lighter side: read how chocolate, yes chocolate helps balance weight control. How does a natural supplement normalize blood sugar? To keep us young and sexy read this month’s book review “Stay Young and Sexy.” This month we have several articles addressing health issues from dry skin to acid reflux, dental and chiropractic health, body work and more. Most important let love rule your world. Thank you. Best in Health and Happiness,

The Red Rose

B

Written by Marie Harger

old and romantic with a subtle scent that stirs the emotions, the Red Rose is given as an expression of “Love” and is a symbol of affection and enduring passion between lovers. Red roses are the first choice for sending the strongest message of love. A bouquet of red roses is a bouquet of true love and is used as a Valentine’s Day gift in many countries. It is known universally as the lover’s rose. Fully bloomed red roses represent the message “I still love you,” and red rose buds represent first time love. The color red itself evolved from an early primal symbol for life into a metaphor for deep emotion and passion. It also holds the meaning of courage, respect and the creative spirit of love. Roses are ancient symbols of love and beauty. In Greek and Roman mythology the red rose was closely tied to the goddess of love – Aphrodite - and was sacred to a number of goddesses including Isis and Venus, and is often used as a symbol of the Virgin Mary. The modern red rose was introduced to Europe from China in the 1800’s. However, the meanings associated with them can be traced back many centuries, even to some of the earliest societies. Many cultures would use the red rose for marriage ceremonies or included them in the actual wedding attire, considering the red rose as a symbol for love and fidelity. In Spain the community of Catalonia offers red roses as gifts, especially between lovers. The month of February is an opportunity to express passion and love with the gift of the Red Rose.

G

Folic acid: A yellowishorange compound and member of the Vitamin B Complex used as a nutrient. Used in cosmetic emollients. Occurs naturally in the liver, kidney, mushrooms, and green leaves. Aids in cell formation, especially red blood cells. No toxicity known.

lycoTrol is a natural supplement designed to help maintain normal blood-glucose levels, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels, and homocysteine levels. GlycoTrol was developed by Dr. Charles Jarowski, Former Director of Pharmaceutical Research and Development at Pfizer.

A brief description: People with diabetes, or those at risk, are often counseled to substitute protein for carbohydrates, with the goal of minimizing sudden increases in blood sugar following a meal. However this ignores a major problem. When proteins are consumed, and one or more of the essential amino acids is in short supply, the protein is not fully utilized. Unfortunately, the unutilized amino acids are mostly broken down into sugar (glucose) and nitrogen waste products such as ammonia, urea or uric acid. Thus, even when you substitute protein for carbohydrates, your blood sugar levels may continue to rise – as well as toxic by-products not found in carbohydrates. The increased nitrogen waste products could prove toxic to individuals with poorly functioning kidneys. Eighteen of the 20+ amino acids can be converted to glucose (blood sugar) from the protein you do not use. If the amino-acid profile of your meal is imbalanced, then your blood-sugar levels will rise, along with ammonia, urea and uric acid. This is a problem for diabetics, who must constantly work to keep blood glucose under control and who are in danger of coronary heart disease and kidney malfunction. If blood concentrations of glucose are too high for too long, glucose will react with proteins and hemoglobin molecules to form dangerous end-products. Glucose reacts with hemoglobin molecules in the red blood cells to form Hemoglobin A1c. Hemoglobin A1c damage eyes and kidneys and when they are formed they remain in blood circulation for up to 120 days and continue to do damage – long after blood-glucose levels have declined.

Proprietary Blend: L-Lysine HCI: An essential amino acid that is a necessary building block for all protein. L-Valine: An essential amino acid that is needed for muscle metabolism, tissue repair, and the maintenance of a proper nitrogen balance in the body. L-Methionine: An essential amino acid that assists in the breakdown of fats. L-Tryptophan: An essential amino acid that is necessary for the production of vitamin B3 (niacin), which is used by the brain to produce serotonin.

Dosage: Take 1 capsule, five minutes before a meal. If blood sugar falls below desired level, dosage may be reduced by opening capsules and taking ½ of contents. Before using this product consult with your doctor or pharmacists. References: 1. Winter, Ruth. A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives. Crown Publishers, Inc 1988.

BRAINHEALTH

Food for Thought Brain Food Written by Marie Harger

sively the brain will have reduced sensitivity to the pleasure centers causing the need and habituation to eat more for the feel-good chemicals to release. According to research done by the Scripps Research Institute’s Florida facility, when this process takes place the behavior that arises from eating junk food is similar to that of a heroin addict who requires more and more of the drug to feel good and “They lose control,” says researcher Paul Kenny and “This is the hallmark of addiction.” What food specifically fuels the brain? Dr. Daniel G. Amen, MD has narrowed down the most important foods for the health of the brain.

O

ne of the obvious health tips for optimal brain wellness and performance is to eat nutritious food. Eating a balanced diet, exercising and getting enough rest are all essential components to feeling good and living a healthy life. There is no doubt food affects the Brain, either to build and nourish or to deplete and reduce function. The foods we eat may have even more of an influence on how the brain works in its general tone and level of energy and how it handles its tasks the one may realize. Research labs around the country are finding that the right food, or the natural neurochemicals that they contain, can enhance mental capabilities, help concentration, motivation, tune sensorimotor skills, improve and enhance memory, speed up reaction times, reduced stress and possibly prevent the brain from aging.

Lean protein from fish, chicken, lean pork or beef because they help build neurons. Avocados, raw nuts and healthy fats (olive oil), maintain nerve cell membranes and myelin (white fatty substance forming the sheath of certain nerve fibers).

...eating junk food is similar to that of a heroin addict who requires more and more of the drug to feel good and “They lose control,” says researcher Paul Kenny and “This is the hallmark of addiction.”

As a metabolically active organ, the brain needs lots of energy compared to other organs in the body. Important to the proper functioning of the brain is eating the foods that provide enough energy. Junk food (foods such as candy, cake, greasy fried, etc) affects and alters the brains reward system causing addictive behavior. This natural reward system is composed of the network of nerve cells that release feel-good chemicals. When junk food is eaten excesFor past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

- Whole grains, fruits, and vegetables are important complex, low-glycemic carbohydrates to feel mentally balanced and soothed. - Berries, or food with lots of antioxidants to help cell energy and restore damage to cells.

Supplements that are essential for Brain health include B vitamins. They minimize fatigue, enhance memory, reaction time, performance and endurance during exercise. B vitamins greatly influence mood and mental performance. Supplementation of Omega 3 fatty acids is extremely important for overall brain cell membranes. They allow for optimal brain function and intelligence performance. References: 1.Amen, Daniel MD. PROVIDERPROFILE

Gary Danchak, OMD Interviewed by Marie Harger

S

tuck? Blocked? Imbalanced? Stagnated? It is Dr. Gary Danchak’s job to identify and resolve just such conditions using the Traditional Chinese Medicine of Acupuncture and Herbs. Many people who come into to see Dr. Danchak are experiencing pain and have often tried everything else. The cause of pain (physical or emotional) is stuck, blocked, imbalanced or stagnant chi/qi (energy/vital force). Dr. Danchak regulates the internal functions of the body via various stimuli such as needles, herbs, moxibustion, cupping and electro-acupuncture. When the circulation of chi/qi flows unimpeded there is a balance between the nutritive (yin) and dynamic (yang) aspects of the body, bringing good health and a feeling of serenity. Dr. Danchak grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Kenyon College (Gambir, Ohio) with a degree in English Literature and a Masters degree in creative writing at the University of Iowa. He taught at the University of Alabama. Later he moved to Chicago and through a girl friend, who was receiving acupuncture for headaches and migraines due to a car accident, had his first acupuncture experience. While enduring a month of back pain from an injury, he experienced quick remission of pain after his first acupuncture treatment. He was so impressed that he quit his job, that he loved, to go in a new direction with the hopes of helping others to experience the relief, healing and peace he had received through acupuncture. Dr. Danchak moved to New Mexico and attended Southwest Acupuncture College in Santa Fe for 4 ½ years. After graduation he moved to Reno, Nevada and started his current practice in 2002. Dr. Danchak first introduces acupuncture and herbs to a patient by educating them on what acupuncture and herbs are, what they do, and the theory behind Traditional Chinese medicine. Just like the weather changes in the outside world, we all have weather within us that is dynamic and always changing. When imbalances become ingrained and chronic within, the results are pain or symptoms of disease. There are 12 organ systems (6 yin and 6 yang), which influence our internal weather. Eastern Medicine is all encompassing, considering the physical, emotional, mental, environmental and dietary energetics at play in each patient. The primary goal of Eastern Medicine is to get to the root problem and fix it, not just deal with symptoms. Dr. Danchak does three types of acupuncture, Traditional Chinese, Japanese Kototama and Taiwanese acupuncture; each employs different degrees of needle stimulation. If someone is February 2010

9

afraid of needles he will use Japanese Kotatoma because it uses the finest needles and the least manipulation. Traditional Chinese technique uses the thicker, uncoated needles and stronger stimulation, which can sometimes offer quicker results. Dr. Danchak will examine your tongue and feel your pulses and then run an Electro-Meridian Image (computerized test) showing a printed graph of the energy he feels in your pulses. The graph/pulses show the relative excesses and deficiencies in the main organs in the body. He then considers other factors that work against us all such as, use of drugs (prescription and recreational), genetics, lifestyle, diet (a major factor) and exercise. He actively researches and tracks results of each patient’s herbal formulas and acupuncture point combinations and adjusts them as needed to maximize results. It is a team effort of Dr. Danchak and the patient to identify root causes of imbalance and eliminate them, strengthening the body’s ability to heal itself. What surprises patients about acupuncture is that, unlike some visits to a Western Medicine doctor’s office, patients feel a deep sense of relaxation after acupuncture, sometimes so deep that they leave the office without their coats and car keys. Overall benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine are the ability to successfully relieve chronic and acute pain, address dietary issues, and adjust the internal functioning of the body. Dr. Danchak has the satisfaction of knowing he is a force for something good when he works with a patient. Experience the peace and healing of Traditional Chinese Medicine--Acupuncture and Herbs--with Dr. Gary Danchak and change your inner weather so that it is always a sunny day. Psychology’s New God

Jungian Psychology Series

Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD

A

lthough cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been around for several decades, its exalted status within the fields of psychology, medicine and healthcare insurance has reached a fever-pitch the past few years. One of the most researched and popular forms of psychotherapy, CBT is increasingly hailed as the “gold standard” of treatment for depression, anxiety disorders and insomnia. In addition, CBT has been enthusiastically embraced and promoted by insurance companies because it is considered an effective, short-term therapy. Owing to the hundreds of research studies documenting its efficacy in treatment for the above illnesses, CBT is the quintessential “evidence-based treatment.” In fact, there is currently a movement within the field of psychology which maintains that only evidence-based treatments–especially CBT and its derivatives–should be taught in post graduate psychology and social work programs, and practiced by psychotherapists. CBT is a blending of two psychological approaches to the human personality: behaviorism, which focuses on techniques for changing behavior through conditioning processes (punishment, reinforcement, desensitization, etc.) and cognitive therapy, which emphasizes the role of thinking in behavior and emotions. From the perspective of cognitive therapy, emotional problems arise from maladaptive/irrational thoughts and assessments we carry towards ourselves and the events of our life. Straighten out your thinking and problematic behaviors and emotions will melt away. Both behaviorism and cognitive therapy essentially deny the existence of the unconscious, or deem it irrelevant to the origin and healing of mental illness. The result is a truncated view of the psyche, somewhat akin to a horticulturist who ignores the role of roots and soil upon a plant’s health. For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

With its overriding emphasis upon the power of thoughts, CBT essentially glorifies the mind and “rationality.” While it is true that our thoughts affect our emotions and behaviors, it is also true that the psyche is an autonomous entity, which has reasons and goals, which the “rational” mind and ego may never understand. In fact, some illnesses occur precisely because the “logical” ideas and beliefs that a person has tried to sell himself fail to convince his core personality. In some ways, obsessive thoughts and irrational fears are like germs; they are always present but only become our problem when they have something to latch onto. That “something” is our inner psychological process. For example, a person does not usually develop recurring thoughts of death or suicide simply because his appraisals of life and self took a negative turn, but because the theme of death resonates with his deeper process– usually the need for change and transformation. A young mother does not develop a persistent phobia of her child being kidnapped just because she read a newspaper article about a kidnapping and overestimated the danger. At an unconscious level part of her may wish that someone would take this “burden” off her hands. And the frequent traveler might not have developed a fear of flying if there was not a part of him that desperately needed to come back down to earth. What traditional CBT theory is reluctant to acknowledge is the fact that our inner world is projected outward, manifesting itself in unbidden but very symbolic thoughts (and also in symbolic behaviors and physical symptoms).

HEALTHYRELATIONSHIPS

Reiki and Relationships Written by Kate Moser

R

eiki and energy healing can be defined as the transference of the Universal Life Force to another. It increases the life energy within and without a person, leading to a sense of well-being, increased energy, and a higher sense of connectedness to the natural world and to others. Stress, pain, anxiety, and depression can negatively affect our bodies and how we feel about ourselves, consequently hurting our relationships and our health. We are not at our best and often have very little to give. Negative emotions can feel heavy, and take everything we have to get through the day. Personal and business relationships suffer because we have less energy to contribute to them. Stress and pain negatively affect our bodies and spirits as well as our relationships. It is difficult to feel happy, encouraging, or very social when you are anxious or in pain. When you feel negative emotions, such as sadness, anxiety or anger, there is likely a decrease or blockage of life energy or chi (vital force). Energy healings, such as Reiki, can help change a person’s attitude toward life, decrease anxiety, and increase energy. When energy blocks are cleared, negative mental and emotional states can be changed. Reiki can lessen pain and improve one’s feelings of connectedness, and happiness towards oneself and others. This positively affects relationships with significant others, family members, co-workers, and humanity in general. In “The Power of Now”, Eckhart Tolle describes the harmful effects of negative energy created by negative emotions or thoughts. Unhappiness in you can spread to others around you. Negative energy contaminates the things one does and one’s relationships. He states: “[A]ny negative inner state is contagious: Unhappiness spreads more easily than a physical disease. Through the law of resonance, it triggers and feeds latent negativity in others.”

February 2010

Energy healing can clear the head and heart, making room for a light heart and a clear mind, both essential for building and developing relationships. Physical and emotional pain lessens, allowing for a new perspective and experiences. It can work as a mere “dusting” away of pesky energies that are stagnate and hinder the workings of the heart, or it can work deeper as it bathes a person with healing light to soften past wounds. Attention can then be placed on one’s present situation and relationships, providing opportunities for greater happiness. References: 1. Eckhart Tolle. When You Smile the Whole World Smiles With You

D

The Damon System…Braces for Adults

o you remember how big and bulky braces used to be? Well, thanks to current orthodontic technology, brackets are smaller than ever. In fact, downsizing the overall dimensions of the braces and needing less forces to move and align teeth has made orthodontics more popular and much more comfortable. There are many types of brackets and styles patients can select. One such type is the clear translucent braces or the clear aligners to straighten teeth. Today smiles can be made wider without the need for palatal expanders (a metal screw device that fits up in the palate or roof of the mouth). Expanders have been an excellent

appliance that allowed orthodontists to treat many more cases without the need for extraction of permanent teeth. These expanders create more space for the teeth to align and increase the width of the jaws by loosening and separating the palatal bones. The smiles in today’s society are bigger and brighter than ever thanks, in large part, to expanding dental arches. While most patients are willing to avoid extractions and choose to insert expanders, there are some disadvantages to using expanders: they can be obstructive to the tongue and may temporarily cause difficulty in speech and swallowing. Orthodontists who utilize the Damon System of Braces can expand both the upper and lower dental arches significantly

12

with small, light archwires only and on most cases do not require the use of expanders. This system has been clinically proven to expand and widen smiles as much as 11mm (on adults or children) and more without excessive pressures that expanders can place. This is a much more comfortable method with a lot less hardware involved. So, how does this system with such light forces widen and expand bone? Conventional brackets require the wire to be “tied into the slot” either with steel wires or colorful elastic type rings. With these systems, there can be anywhere from 400 to 700 times more friction bound up by “tying in” or holding tightly the archwires into this slot of the

February 2010

bracket. The key to changing arch forms and widening smiles is to reduce the friction between the wire and the slot on the brackets (braces). This is accomplished by using high-tech heat activated archwires (with memory of their shape) passively in Damon braces that have a door to lightly hold the archwires. There is less friction and tension between the interface of the wire and the slot of the bracket and the wires are allowed to slide freely through these small doors. here are many myths and common misconceptions about laser hair removal. This article clears up some.

It doesn’t work on certain skin/hair types/colors: All skin & hair types can now be successfully treated. There are two categories of lasers: those that target pigment and those that target blood. “Pigment” lasers can only treat clients with great contrast between the skin & hair such as light skin with dark hair. “Blood Supply” lasers (1064 ND:yag) can treat both dark & light skin and hair. Gray/white hair cannot be treated, but advances are continuing.

Laser Hair removal is painful: Newer lasers have more settings and a cooling tip that blows cold air over the area being treated providing natural anesthetic. Laser hair removal is less painful than tweezing, waxing or getting a tattoo. Electrolysis only does one hair at a time while laser does an ‘area’ which includes multiple follicles. So, with laser, the “area” of pain may be larger than electrolysis. However, electrolysis takes much longer - so the pain “time” is increased. Also, there is a much higher incidence of scarring and other issues than with laser.

Lasers are dangerous: When performed by a qualified practitioner, laser hair removal is quite safe. Potential side effects are rare.

Experience precise, computer driven laser therapy. We have the most comfortable laser technology on the market.

Laser hair removal creates more hair: Laser hair removal cannot create more hair than you were genetically born with. If this was the case, bald men would be knocking down doors. We are born with all of our hair follicles in place, but not all follicles are producing at any given age. For example, a woman may get chin whiskers in her mid forties. Hair follicles seem to have a pre-determined time frame. Hair follicles can only be killed during a growth stage. Certain hair is programmed to grow when we are children, when we enter puberty and later in life. If a hair follicle is actively growing, is lasered and the follicle destroyed, that follicle can never produce a hair again. But it didn’t kill the hair from the next follicle that is due to start its growth cycle. Between 10-30% of our hair is in a growth phase at any given time (except on our head which is 85%). So while one treatment will kill follicles that are in their active growth phase, multiple treatments will be required to kill all follicles in their various growth phases, usually between 4-10 treatments. Shaving hair makes your hair thicker and denser: Shaving does not change the type of hair that you grow. Your hair is genetically predetermined to be thick or thin and shaving cannot change this. However, hair that is shaved has a blunt end, which can make it appear thicker. Laser hair removal is expensive: When you add up a lifetime of razors, shaving cream, bleaching, waxing and electrolysis, not to mention embarrassment, rash and ingrown hairs, it adds up to a lot more than the cost of laser hair removal. Many spas and businesses offer multi-treatment discounts as well as possible financing, sometimes at 0% interest. References: 1. he holiday season can challenge our body’s digestive system from overeating, over drinking, spicy foods and extra stresses. Heartburn, also known as gastritis, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) with symptoms of stomach pain, bloating, belching and gas can cause a myriad of primary and secondary problems. In some cases severe pain, which can radiate up the esophagus under the sternum, can cause inflammation and hoarseness of the vocal chords and if chronic, can cause Barrett’s Esophagus, which then could develop into cancer. Although most people think gastritis is due to too much stomach acid, many times it is just the opposite with too little stomach acid, especially as we age. The body works hard to make stomach acid, which requires lots of energy. The stomach runs at a pH of 1 to 2 while the blood runs at a pH of 7.35, slightly alkaline. Hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid) is

believed to occur in as many as 75% of people over age 60. Although baking soda and antacids have been a customary treatment for heartburn, many people fare better by taking stomach acid support with betaine HCL, pepsin and glutamic acid during meals or right after meals. Burping signifies fermentation in the stomach, allowing yeasts to invade (which should have been killed by adequate stomach acid), causing bubbles like brewing beer or champagne in the stomach. Likewise, bloating and gas means one is not digesting efficiently and undigested nutrients such as carbohydrates are being fermented in the intestines, proteins are putrefied and fats go rancid. All of this maldigestion can lead to inflammation of the body as a whole, allergies and a suppressed immune system, as well as B12 deficiency, poor absorption of minerals and proteins necessary for brain chemical manufacturing and DNA production of replacement proteins in the body. If you do choose antacids, it is better to use a more physiologic (like the body makes) alkalinizing agent rather than plain baking soda or sodium bicarbonate; such as sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium bicarbonate, Nema Base, BioTerrain, Alkala or Alka-Seltzer Gold, sodium and potassium bicarbon-

ate. Another favorite in the herbal realm for heartburn is slippery elm powder. Take 4 to 6 caps for acute heartburn or 4 caps routinely before meals and bed for more chronic problems. For faster action, open 6 or 8 caps in a cup of warm water and stir out the lumps and drink for relief in 30 seconds to one minute. It coats and soothes the whole esophagus and stomach. For long-term gastritis, low-dose adrenal support and nutritional supplementation helps to promote pancreatic bicarbonate production (pH 8), which is pumped into the small intestine right after food leaves the stomach. Neural therapy using local anesthetics with German injectable homeopathics stops most chronic heartburn immediately as it does with acute or chronic gallbladder pain. There are also several great German tinctures that stop heartburn quickly and aid digestion. Guar gum and deglycerated licorice can kill H. Pylori, a bacteria that can overgrow in GERD. If you have had a history of acid reflux, determining the cause will bring much needed relief. References: 1. Rafsky HA, Weingarten M. A study of the gastric secretory response in the aged. What is Health Coaching? A New Approach and a Growing Need Written by Deanna Mandichak

f you answer “Yes” to any of the following questions then this article may speak to you:

- Do you have trouble reaching your health goals? - Do you feel like you don’t have control of your health? - Do you feel tired or stressed out? - Do you have an ailment that you have difficulty with? - Do you want to just FEEL GOOD? - Do you need help designing an exercise program? - Do you want to stop procrastinating? - Do you want to build up your immune system? - Do you need help with meal planning, and nutrition? A Health Coach can help! It is astounding when you look at health care expenditures in the United States, which is currently $2 Trillion dollars per year. Many doctors have little training in preventative medicine and there are currently millions of people with diabetes, heart disease, cancer, autoimmune diseases, hypertension, and the like, and at least 30% of our population suffer from these chronic conditions. With new technologies and advances in research, we would hope to be getting healthier. Since the opposite appears to be true, the need for Health Coaching arises.

their lifestyle. A Health coach can help keep you on track. Health Coaching began in the 1990’s initially treating people addicted to alcohol; it has evolved to guiding people to “self manage” their own health, and wellbeing. A health coach can easily identify issues that derail them from achieving goals, producing tangible results to reaching their final objectives. Coaching effectively motivates behavior change, and is one of the most powerful forces in reaching your goals and experiencing success. Many people also make too many goals or difficult goals, and get discouraged when they do not succeed, and give up. A Health Coach will help you define your goals and make small steps to reach them. Health Coaches do not accept failure as an option, and are committed to helping you every step of the way. They provide encouragement, motivation, help you establish realistic goals, and are supportive and understanding. Health Coaches can also work with your doctor

According to many doctors and researchers, the root causes of most illness is stress, lack of proper nutrition, lack of exercise, toxins, and just “being out of shape”. Most people do not know where to begin when taking control of their health and preventing illness. Some people who may already be diagnosed with a chronic disease or illness are overwhelmed when they are asked by their doctor to make simple changes to February 2010

in dealing with your illness or disease; helping you in reaching optimum health results. Health Coaches have specific strategies and techniques to help direct you in the areas of your life that need attention and improvement. Neuromuscular Dentistry

What It Is.

Why It Can Balance Out Your Overall Health. Written by Dan Mannikko, DDS

N

euromuscular dentistry is a treatment philosophy that looks beyond teeth to the other structures and tissues that are indirectly altered in an individual’s attempt to bring their teeth and jaws together. Neuromuscular dentists deal with the delicate interplay between the upper and lower teeth, right and left jaw joints, and muscles of the face, neck, and shoulders as they all relate to a stabile, strong spinal alignment. The actions of the lower jaw are very dynamic, and its ability to move in six dimensions is well documented. When these movements and positions are restricted, deflected, or otherwise altered so as to not allow a natural, whole-body alignment, a breakdown of overall structural system occurs. Symptoms of an unbalanced bite show up as muscle pain or trigger points from the shoulder blades upward; a popping noise around or in the ear; or a limited range of motion of the jaw. Very often, we see a forward-leaning head posture, and middle ear symptoms including plugged

ears, vertigo/dizziness, and ear ringing. Neuromuscular dentistry began in the 1960s with the advent of instrumentation that allowed us to look and measure specific movements and functions of the jaw and muscles. It has been said if something can be measured it is a fact; otherwise, it is just opinion. With the use of this instrumentation a new world was opened for those who were willing to explore it. Additionally, this period brought about the discovery of a “zone of neutrality,” which is basically a resting jaw position where the chewing muscles are physiologically relaxed and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is normalized for optimum function and comfort. In this balanced, neutral zone, the upper cervical vertebrae are stable and not torqued, which really allows the body to begin to “unwind” and heal in an attempt to return to homeostasis. When patients visit a neuromuscular dentist and describe migraines, teethgrinding, receding gums, sensitive teeth, tooth loss, breaking of teeth or popping in the ear/jaw, what is typically happening

is the tug of war of powerful, opposing forces brought into play by an unbalanced bite. In these cases, the physical demand on the body is constant and significant, marshalling resources that could be better utilized for athletic performance, higher energy levels or feeling better on the job. All of this goes on whether the individual experiences pain or not. What’s more, an unbalanced bite and its effects can often disrupt many other systems, including the endocrine, neurological and balance, or Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Any of which can increase the overall “load” on the body, making the individual feel less than optimally healthy. A simple half-hour exam by a neuromuscular dentist can detect any bite imbalances and set the patient on the path to total wellness in a remarkably short period of time. Whiplash at ZERO MPH Written by Dr. Michelle Bean, DC

W

hiplash is a condition most commonly associated with motor vehicle accidents where the head and neck are “snapped” in a manner resembling the snapping of a whip. The mechanism of injury has been extensively studied and although it is known that the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the neck can be injured, as in a sprain/ strain, the real culprit causing chronic symptoms are the joints of the bones in the neck and their discs. During whiplash the neck forms an abnormal S-shaped curve, similar to a snapping of a whip. This causes the head to snap back and the jaw to be thrust forward. The total amount of motion of the entire head and neck is irrelevant to the severity of injury. It is the abnormal motion that occurs between the bones that has the potential to injure the structures of the spine. In fact, this abnormal motion can occur in low impact collisions where the change in speed can be as little as 5 mph. Initial injury to muscles and ligaments heal in 6-8 weeks, however, delayed or unaddressed treatment to the joints in the spine can lead to adhesions and scarring around the joints, persistent muscle spasm, fibrosis of muscles due to faulty biomechanics, and eventual adhesions of the nerve roots. All of these changes can cause chronic conditions that will persist long after the initial accident including neck pain/tension, shoulder pain, headaches/migraines, arm pain/numbness and weakness, dizziness, fatigue, depression, visual disturbances, pain behind the eye, jaw pain, and many others.

neck are pushed forward. In an attempt to maintain balance we automatically extend the head back even further causing that abnormal S-shaped curve of the neck as seen in sudden whiplash. Only now we maintain this posture hours on end and day after day. Overtime this will result in muscle lengthening adaptations and altered normal biomechanics. The body continues to compensate by restricting motion of injured muscles and joints. All these changes cause secondary myofascial pain that leads to referred pain typically in the neck, shoulders, and between the shoulder blades. Initially most people will experience this as that stress or tension in the neck and shoulders that we all know too well. However, it’s important to remember that this tension is usually a secondary symptom at this point. The main cause is an alteration in posture creating adhesions around the joints of the spine. Whether your injuries are the result of

a whiplash occurring at 40 mph, 10 mph, or zero mph, it is important to address the injuries that occur within the neck. Upper cervical chiropractors specialize in restoring normal posture, muscle tone, and motion of the spine. References: 1. Dreyer SJ, Boden SD. Non-operative Treatment of Neck and Arm Pain. Ironically, the same mechanism that creates whiplash in less than 0.005 seconds, can be created at ZERO MPH, over a prolonged period of time. Whiplash at zero mph is a result of poor posture. What Love Means to Me

The Healthy Adventurer I began my healthy adventures in 1972 traveling all over the world by bike. Today I am 69 years old and still going strong. It is never to late to live a healthy active life and be your own healthy adventurer.

Written by Ariana Purcell, 12 years old

A

s you know, February is the month of love. So, I would like to say what love means to me. It means that you care for someone. During this month, I like to list all the things that I love! Well, number one is of course my family, because without family we would have nothing. Second on my list are friends; they are always there for me. Number three on my list would be the Earth, because the Earth makes our lives possible. It’s our home. So, when you make your love list, make sure to add Mother Earth!

Australia - February 2010 Here in Pine Creek was the junction. Before I left the Stuart Highway, I had been traveling on since Port Augusta, I came upon the largest termite hill I had seen thus far. To call it “termite column” would be more descriptive. They had become rather plentiful since I entered the Northern Territories. All along they had been red like the earth and averaged 1 m in height reminding me of tombstones in a graveyard. Here they were gray and huge. This one here I estimated to be 4 m high and 2 m in diameter. So why were they different here? I came upon a plaque that explained that there are 2,000 known species of termites of which 200 are found in Australia and 90 alone in the Northern Territories. Some of them venture deep into the soil where there is an abundance of minerals, which they bring up to construct their columns. This explains the gray color in an otherwise red world. As these mounts decay they fertilize the soil.

This is a fun month because in my class we make Valentine cards and do art projects to give as gifts to people we love. Well, I know I do. Here are some tips on how to stay green, when making cards/projects for Valentines. When you are using paper to make a card or project, make sure to save the scraps. Someone else could use them for their project. Use glue, sparkles, or other adornments sparingly, do not over do it! If no one else needs the leftover scraps, make sure to put them in a Recycle bin.

I faced headwinds as I now biked easterly towards Kakadu National Park. Kakadu is a word from one of the indigenous languages for the known pretty and noisy birds. Little changed in the scenery of the ongoing bush land. While there were intermittent fences before, there where none now. In the afternoon it began to rain again. There was an advantage to that; it stopped the nasty headwind.

If you receive chocolates or a gift, reuse the box or the bag it came in! Follow these tips and they’ll help you stay green! Make sure to pass these on to your friends, teachers and parents so they can stay green as well! Also, tell all of the people you care about that you love them!

To be continued….

CANDIDA Are Yeast Infections Making You Sick? Written by Dr. Sally Rockwell

T

he contemporary Western diet is the FAD. Our declining health is directly related to our eating habits of the past 50 years -- a diet high in overly processed foods, sugar, salt, and fat; and low in fiber and nutrients that does not keep us healthy. The results of our contemporary dietary habits are showing up as FAD DIS-EASES such as hypoglycemia, food allergies, candida yeast overgrowth, epstein-barr virus, cancer, autoimmune diseases, immune system dysfunctions, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc. These conditions are SYMPTOMS of our fast-paced lifestyles and poor eating habits -- and can be reversed when we are willing to take responsibility for our health and change our eating habits. Yeast infections are not new to the human species. Hippocrates noted that people with white patches on their tongues (yeast overgrowth) were people who would soon die.

What is Candida? Candida Albicans is the name of a yeast organism that belongs to a family of molds, mildews and fungus; bacteria organisms are in a different category, or family. Candida is found in most warmblooded animals (including humans and house pets), and is a normal inhabitant of the bowel. Yeast and bacteria normally live together in harmony. Friendly and unfriendly organisms like yeast and bacteria live everywhere, including in and on our bodies. Our intestines are full of friendly bacteria that do work for us by helping to digest foods, produce vitamins and so on. Some yeast hang around; they do not seem to do any work for us, but they do not harm us either. When our health is good and the

friendly bacteria are active, yeast does not multiply into colonies large enough to cause problems. Yeast do not thrive in a healthy body. Yeast are opportunists, and multiply rapidly in stressed and/or unhealthy bodies. Yeast are well fed by those who exist on diets high in refined starches (white noodles, white rice, white bread), high sugar; junk-food all of which contribute to the conditions described in the CANDIDA QUIZ. The yeast usually get started in the lower bowel and spread out to colonize the entire digestive tract, including up through the stomach (especially in cases of low or no stomach acid) into the throat, mouth and nasal passages and down into the lungs. The bowel wall itself is normally a very sturdy, protective membrane that keeps toxic products of digestion out of the bloodstream. In Candida overgrowth, the yeast buds change form into spear-like shapes and attach to the bowel wall and/ or pass through it into the system. The toxic by-products of the yeast leak into the blood where they cause a wide variety of symptoms including allergic reactions at distant sites such as: joints, skin, lungs, and the brain. Dozens of by-products (poisons) of the yeast have been identified. The most toxic to date is ‘acetaldehyde’, the same chemical that alcohol breaks down to in our bodies — which may explain why one can get a “hang-over” from eating too many sweets or starches, or even too much fruit. In other words, the yeast colonies in our intestines feed on the sugars we eat — multiply — and produce toxic waste that make us sick because we cannot get rid of that toxic waste fast enough.

For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

22

These toxins place a tremendous load on the immune system and so the body cannot defend itself or fight off infections or dis-ease like it’s meant to do. People with severe Candida infection generally have food allergies and are sensitive to all sorts of odors and chemicals and have a hard time living (or even existing) in the 20th century. Women are more likely to get infected than men. This is related to the female sex hormone progesterone, which rises in the body about mid-cycle. Progesterone increases the amount of glycogen (blood sugar) in the vaginal tissues and provides an ideal growth medium for yeast. Certain hormones actually stimulate yeast growth and this may be why some women experience poor health (especially allergies) during pregnancy because this is when progesterone levels are elevated. Men are affected less frequently but are by no means invulnerable to yeast infections. Prostrate problems and jock rash are often associated with yeast infections. In infants yeast infection is seen as thrush or severe diaper rash. Candida yeast can be transferred from mother to child at birth. Symptoms are so illusive and varied that yeast overgrowth is seldom recognized. Begin by taking the CANDIDA QUIZ, then thoughtfully review your lifestyle. BODYWORK

Massage Therapy

It’s not just a Luxury Written by Kaleigh Richards, LMT

F

or many years, massage has been viewed as a stress relieving luxury. However, in the past decade or so, the general public and other healthcare professionals are starting to recognize that massage therapy is an effective healthcare approach. Massage therapy, along with chiropractic, physical therapy and other natural health modalities are being sought out more often as an alternative option to prescription drugs and surgery. Massage therapy is different from any other health care modality, as the therapist often spends an hour in constant physical contact during the course of treatment. Massage therapy has proven to be a very effective course of treatment for an injury, such as frozen shoulder, or an illness, such as fibromyalgia. A doctor (medical or chiropractic or other) should be contacted to rule out contraindications before starting a treatment program. Frozen shoulder is a term used to describe conditions that result in pain in the shoulder joint. Pain often starts as a result of trauma to the shoulder, poor posture or pathological issues, or it may appear for some unknown reason. As the name suggests, over time restriction or adhesions of the joint capsule develop, resulting in reduced movement of the shoulder, accompanied with pain upon movement in certain directions. A massage treatment program over a period of time, with the approval of a physician, can be very effective in improving the range of motion and pain associated with a frozen shoulder.

A case study of a 55-year-old woman who developed a frozen shoulder, as the result of a trauma to the shoulder, is an example of how massage can be a beneficial therapy. She was unable to lift her arm to more than one inch in abduction away from her hip (abduction is the movement of a limb away from the body). With the encouragement and approval of her doctor, she received a therapeutic massage once a week for three months. After three months, she had little to no pain remaining and was able to lift her arm up to her ear. Fibromyalgia is another chronic condition where massage therapy has been known to alleviate pain, stiffness, and tenderness of the muscles, tendons, and joints. While the cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, many sufferers experience sleep disturbance, morning stiffness, tingling, anxiety, and depression. Skin Rashes Written by Ffjorren Zolfagar

T

he month of February offers cool, crisp winter days. Temperatures remain low and the air is quite dry. As we head outdoors, our skin becomes vulnerable to the harsh winter elements sometimes causing a rash. The common skin rash is, simply put, any eruption of the skin. It is also referred to as Dermatitis in the medical world, which means inflammation of the skin. Symptoms might include red inflamed skin, scaly dry patches, hives or little bumps. No matter what it looks like, it almost always itches. This constant uncomfortable state can leave you irritable and often times, affects sleep. To combat this overall irritation, start with diagnosing the rash. There are many types of rashes, but a few are more common than others. Eczema rashes are usually accompanied with red and dry scaly patches of skin. These rashes tend to be hereditary and begin in early childhood. The rash comes and goes throughout one’s life, but does not follow any particular pattern. An eczema breakout is normally triggered by an allergy to things like seasonal changes, food, soaps, detergents or perfumes. Contact Dermatitis refers to a rash that develops from something that came into

contact with your skin and causes an allergic reaction, like poison ivy, perfumes or metals. It can also occur from an external irritant, like washing your hands too often or taking frequent, hot showers. Heat rash is another common rash that normally occurs during the summer months. The rash begins when sweat becomes trapped under the skin. The sweat ducts become blocked and appears red and inflamed. It might cause a “prickly” or stinging sensation. Children tend to be afflicted with this rash more often than adults.

or suggest an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream. If it is an allergic reaction, they’ll suggest you avoid the substance or material that caused the rash. Here are a few natural remedies that could help soothe and heal the above mentioned skin rashes:

Natural skin rash relief: • Soak a washcloth in cool water, wring it and apply to the affected area for at least 10 minutes. Repeat as necessary. For more relief, try using cooled Comfrey tea.

Other rashes include viral rashes (shingles, herpes or chickenpox) and fungal and bacteria infection based rashes (ringworm and impetigo). These rashes often occur as a byproduct of a virus or infection itself. Viral rashes typically last for a few days and they tend to go away on their own. Rashes derived from fungal and bacterial infections are treated with antifungal creams and oral antibiotics. The natural treatment for these rashes is based on the infection itself, however one can use natural rash remedies to soothe and heal the skin, as noted later in this article.

• Natural creams with Vitamin E oil, Calendula and chamomile provide quick relief for irritated skin. There are a variety of natural itch relief lotions at your local health food stores.

Common skin rashes often get lumped into one treatment category. Doctors generally prescribe a topical steroid cream

• Add Oat straw powder or extract to a bath to help reduce inflammation and itching. • Use calendula, chamomile, elder flower, and tea tree oil as an external, soothing wash. Smooth Emu oil on the rash as it will aid and expedite healing time.

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment.

HERBS&SPICES

Passionflower Written by Brittany Russell

D

ue to the name, Passionflower has been thought to be an aphrodisiac but in fact, evokes the body and mind to relax. It may have nothing to do with passion, but it can be an herb to be passionate about. According to folklore, Spanish explorers and missionaries, who felt that the flower’s stems resembled the crown of thorns worn by Jesus Christ during his passion, named the flower. American Indians used passionflower as a sedative and calming agent. They would crush the leaves and make a poultice to treat bruises and other injuries and use the wood vines to brew as a tea to soothe the nerves. Passionflower is a vine known for its beautiful white flowers with purple, blue or pink calyx crown blooms. The plant is native to North, Central and South America. The dried aerial parts of passion flower (Passiflora incarnata) have historically been used as a sedative and for gas-

trointestinal complaints. Passion flower has a long history of use for symptoms of restlessness, anxiety and agitation. An extract containing passion flower and hawthorn has been studied as a possible treatment for shortness of breath and difficulty exercising in patients with congestive heart failure. Although the results are promising, the effects of passion flower alone are unclear. Always speak to your doctor before introducing passion flower into your herbal regimen.

Uses: Medicinal uses range from passionflower extract to tranquiliers – derived from the flowers themselves – can have a narcotic effect when taken internally. Also, used to treat tension, fatigue, insomnia, muscle spasms and hyperactivity in children. This herb is used often in mixtures today in European countries and not as much in the United States (although, it was popular in the early 1900).

Standard doses of passionflower can be taken in a variety of preparations. Doses of one half to two grams of dried herb can be taken orally three to four times daily. Tea made from dried herb (four to eight grams) can be taken daily, every 3 to 4 hours. Passionflower is great in an herbal bath to calm and soothe the body overall. For best results, add to bathwater 1 pound of leaves. Whether to calm your nerves, help you sleep or relax stomach ailments, try passionflower today! SUPPLEMENTS101

Balancing Omega Fatty Acids Written by Leslie Baker, PharmD, RPh

T

he essential polyunsaturated fatty acids omega- 3 and omega-6 have been extensively studied and the benefits to the cardiovascular system are well known. What is not as well known are the differences between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and how much of each should be consumed? The most common omega-3 fatty acids found in the human body are alpha linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Since these are essential fatty acids, all 3 of must be obtained either from the diet or by taking supplements. EPA and DHA are found in high concentrations in fatty fish such lake trout, mackerel, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon; foods that are lacking in many American diets. ALA is found in canola, walnut, flaxseed and their oils, tofu and other forms of soybeans. The body can readily use EPA and DHA. Although the body can use ALA, it must be converted to EPA and DHA first. Gender, smoking and diet appear to affect this conversion and it is thought to be inefficient in many people.

reduce inflammation and omega-6’s tend to promote inflammation so there are many that believe there needs to be a balanced ratio between the two (somewhere around 2:1 and 4:1) in order for both to work together and promote good health. Recent data shows that higher intakes appear to be safe and may even be more beneficial when a low-saturated-fat and low-cholesterol diet is followed. The latest review of evidence indicates that although omega-6 fatty acids are linked to inflammation, anti-inflammatory molecules are also formed and these suppress the production of substances that are crucial in the formation of atherosclerotic plaques (these plaques build-up in arteries restricting blood flow to the heart).

Americans do not consume the necessary amount of omega-3’s in their diet. Taking a high quality supplement, which contains the American Heart Associations recommendation of 0.5 to 1.8 grams of EPA and DHA per day, may be a solution to eating the two servings of fish per week that many of us miss.

Whether you subscribe to the theory that there should be a balance between the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids or not, it is well established that most

The American Heart Association currently recommends that at least 5% to 10% of daily calories come from omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The question of should there be a balance in the amount of omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids consumed remains controversial. Omega-3’s help February 2010

HEALTHYCOOKING

Raw Honey - It’s Not Just For Tea Written by Susan Williams

H

oney is the original sweetener. As well as being delicious in tea, on toast, hot biscuits, and other favorites, honey is cholesterol-free, low in sodium and a natural ingredient for cooking. Turning over the sweetening of your food to honey is a healthier alternative to refined sugar and helps keep baked goods moist longer. There are two main hurdles to cooking with honey; honey is a liquid and it is sweeter than sugar. Most muffins, simple quick breads, and yeast breads can make the substitution without any adjustments. However, honey adds moisture to cakes, cookies, and breads therefore, cut back on the amount of liquid used by ¼ cup per one cup of honey. Since honey is sweeter than sugar recipes, substitute 2/3 cup of honey for 1 cup of sugar. Honey is also very easy to use in fruit pies. As the pie cooks the fruit will make its own juice therefore, add a little extra thickening with flour or cornstarch before pouring into the pie shell. When cooking with honey, it is helpful to coat the inside measuring cup with cooking spray or oil. This allows the honey to come out of the cup and ensures correct measures. When using honey, oven temperatures need to be decreased by 25 degrees to ensure the food doesn’t become overly brown. Adding a pinch of baking soda to recipes that don’t already call for some form of milk or cream will counteract the slight acidity that can also causes over-browning.

Honey Toppings, Marinades and Sauces Honey makes an excellent toping for cereals, oatmeal, and pancakes. Try adding bananas, walnuts, and honey to your oatmeal for an immune system boost yet delicious breakfast. Honey butter is excellent on toast, scones, fresh bread or pancakes. Cream together ½ cup butter or margarine and 1/3 cup honey. One fourth teaspoon Cinnamon may be added for variety. Store in the refrigerator. Honey Dijon Marinade. Combine equal parts honey to Dijon Mustard. Use as a marinade for chicken, pork, or beef. Store in the refrigerator. Try adding honey to your favorite stir-fry sauces to make a unique flavorful meal. Combine ½ cup fresh lemon juice, ¼ cup olive oil, ¼ cup soy sauce, regular or mild, ¼ cup honey, ¼ teaspoon ginger, ¼

teaspoon garlic powder. Place your favorite stir-fried vegetable on top of a bed of steamed brown rice. Drizzle sauce over the vegetables. Honey ginger vinaigrette is easy to make and a tasty dressing. Combine ¼ cup rice vinegar, ¼ cup soy sauce, ¼ cup sesame or olive oil, ¼ teaspoon ginger, 1 small minced clove of garlic. Shake until blended. Toss into favorite lettuce or spinach greens. For Honey recipes go to page 29. Skin Rashes Continued from page 24

Soaps that heal: You will need a glycerin soap base, which you can purchase from a natural/ health foods store. Melt the soap base in a double boiler. You will also need soap molds.

• Take a lukewarm shower instead of a bath and do it every few days as opposed to daily.

Balsam of Peru and Benzoin Anti-itch Soap

• Wear loose fitting clothing, preferably cotton.

2 cups glycerin soap base

• Change out your washcloth or bathing sponge after each use. • Avoid contact with common skin irritants like chemicals, dust and water. Specific rash care:

Cradle Cap • Use a calendula cream or vitamin E oil to help soothe and heal the dry skin. • Apply aloe vera gel to help restore the skin. • Apply evening primrose oil as a natural anti-inflammatory. • Apply almond oil to aid in moisturizing.

Diaper Rash • A warm bath with calendula or chamomile helps soothe the skin. • Apply a baking soda and water mixture to the rash to balance the acidity of urine and stool. • Apply evening primrose oil as a natural anti-inflammatory and Emu oil to soothe and heal the rash. • Have your child go without a diaper as much as possible as the air and sunlight aid in “drying“ up the rash.

Heat Rash • Peel a medium cucumber and puree it in a blender or food processor for approximately 10 seconds. •

Strain any excess water out.

• Apply the cucumber puree to the rash and leave it on for 20 minutes. • Wash off the cucumber puree and apply a soothing cream with Calendula, Vitamin E oil or Emu oil.

HEALTHYRELATIONSHIPS

A Culture That LIES Written by Terry Lowey, MFT

T

his article is a continuation from the December article “How and Why we Lie,” and addresses the idea of creating genuine community. The manipulation of financial markets or “Good ole boy code” or “What they don’t know won’t hurt them,” or “Do as I say not as I do,” are all cultural beliefs we were raised with that are based on lies. This country and our American culture was founded on ideas, such as Honesty, Truth, Liberty and Justice, Integrity for all. Truth telling is at the core of your relationship with yourself, with others, with community, with how you interact with Life on every level. It is about being honest about the way you see life unfolding, down to the smallest detail. Why? Honesty is a primary and necessary ingredient to maximizing human potential – that ensures a genuinely happy, meaningful and productive life – to living life to the fullest. “Honesty imbues lives with openness, reliability, and candor; it expresses a disposition to live in the light…Take it seriously. Take recognition of the fact that honesty is a fundamental condition for human intercourse and exchange, for friendship, for all genuine community,” Bennett.

The profound and far-reaching way in which dishonesty affects us was recently reflected on an episode of Oprah. Veronica is a healthy 16 year old whose mother and older brother are battling a years-long addiction to prescription medication. As we covered in the December 2009 article, lying has strong addictive qualities and comparable consequences. When Veronica was asked how she responds to her mother or brother talking to her, she said that she hears the words but that she can see or feel no heart behind them; this renders their words meaningless and lifeless to her. This wise insight sums up what happens when we lie. We violate our heart and those whose perception is acute will recognize this and feel the invalidation. Even with little or no insight, the lie will be noted on an unconscious level, communicating what is not real and that which falls flat when compared to the truth.

probability that someone will hurt you or others if you tell the truth, there would be convincing reason to lie. However, if you choose to stay in such a situation when there are possible ways out, the lies will end up degrading your life and will further enable the negative behavior of others. With few exceptions, lies create murkiness and debase quality of life.

Aren’t there situations when lying is necessary, you might ask? Yes, even morally compelling, such as Ann Franks parents lying to the Nazi’s at the front door, with a family of Jews hiding in the attic; or the battered woman who secretly plans an escape. When there is a high

While this may sound like common sense or at least common knowledge to many, there is increasing evidence that the morality of honesty is incrementally diminishing in our culture. The renowned Dr. Mehmet Oz states that the reason that

Another important consideration in truth-telling is compassion. While neither sugar-coating nor beating around the bush are optimum assertive approaches, healthy and effective honesty is not rude or inconsiderate. Although willing to risk discomfort, it does not arrogantly insist on being ‘right’ and is thoughtful of the alternate positions of others. This, in turn can be directly linked to our propensity toward immediate gratification. We want to feel good and we want it now. Having experienced widespread prosperity for decades, millions seem to feel a sense of entitlement to a life of ease and are willing to take any necessary short-cuts to achieve that and lies become so accepted they are not even recognized as wrong.

ery lie you tell you become physically weaker. Narcissism is a personality disorder, an unhealthy way of viewing life that over-exaggerates self importance and lacks empathy toward others. Sociopaths are an extreme form of personality disorder and are so damaged that they are incapable of feeling any empathy, which is why they can commit even the most heinous crimes and feel no remorse. Taking outlawed performance enhancing drugs as a professional athlete is a deception and a characteristic of narcissism. Many athletes today engage in this behavior and these are the same individuals who are role models for many young Americans. It is a perfect example of how personal ego can supplant a heartfelt genuine attempt to aspire to greatness. In authentic achievement the human condition is elevated with a “transcendence of the personal self”. Perhaps the “New American Way” is moving towards cultural narcissism.

“Even one’s emotional range seems to be more strongly related to values and a basic ‘way of life’ than to basic temperament. For instance, psychologists Shula Sommers and Anthony Scioli found that men and women who have a limited emotional range tend to value a way of life based on pleasure and self-indulgence, and to reject the values of responsibility and loyalty…,” Tavris. To what degree has our culture lost its emotional range? Could the casual inclination to distort the truth in our culture and the resulting limiting outcomes and ensuing emptiness be a major reason why the use of antidepressants has soared and become nothing short of mainstream? Does emphasis on narcissistic immediate gratification and the ‘spin’ of image over substance leave our children yearning for deeper meaning that superficial manipulation can never, ever provide? Empathy is the developed ability to take the feelings of others into thoughtful consideration. It breeds trust and genuine open expression, which in turn fosters a state of resonance, or harmony. Telling the truth fosters empathy. Picture that when people lie they glaze over and present an artificial self. Telling the truth is tantamount to saying a resounding YES to life! While lying conceals, telling the truth illuminates. Genuine community is based on a cultural ideas that support honesty, truth, and trust. According to Dr. Hawkins to become truly powerful you must replace all that is false with truth and that is the essence of healing for all. This country and culture can regain it’s “Power” by being courageous and focusing on qualities of Truth, Honesty, Empathy, Service towards others, and Integrity. References: 1. POWER VS. Tested By Time The Snowshoe Plods On Written by Sean Block

R

oughly 6,000 years ago, the largest pocket of the human population was located near present-day Central Asia. Around that time, the first primitive snowshoe, a crudely bound mishmash of leaves, leather and branches began to emerge, making migration to the snowy North much easier. Some migrated to what is now Northern Europe and developed skis as a method of transportation. Those that crossed the Bering land-bridge into North America to become the Inuit and many American Indian tribes chose the snowshoe. Their durable, simplistic design was as crucial to the pioneers that conquered the west as any other modern tool of the time. Skis were not documented in America until the 1800s when the Finns, Swedes, and Norwegians began to immigrate in substantial numbers. Despite the introduction of the ski, the snowshoe was more efficient; it remained the preferred method of winter travel in America from roughly 4,000 B.C. until the 1960s. The snowshoe as we know it was designed by the Athaspascan and Algonquin Indians. Often homemade until the last hundred years, white ash frames with rawhide webbing and lacing were the predominate style before the age of metal and synthetics. However, technological advancements have done little to change

the shape of the modern snowshoe. Nowadays, snowshoeing has become more recreational than demanded by necessity. Snow goers tear through forests on snowmobiles and rip down mountains on finely tuned skis and snowboards. The day of the snowshoe has come and gone. Or has it? Commercially, snowshoe tours have been on a consistent rise that have seen them compete with, and then surpass cross-country skiing tours in recent years. Who knows exactly why each person chooses the slow, tedious pace of snowshoes over easier solutions. Maybe it is the peace that comes with the silence, or that snowshoes tend to be the safest method of snow travel; or that the slower we go, the more we notice. It could be because snowshoes are low-impact and stealthy, keeping skittish animals from fleeing from hunter or enthusiast; and they fit in a pack. Or maybe it is because they are cheap, they are easy, and they are fun. Snowshoes allow the adventurous hiker to escape to the hills even in the depths of winter. Some of the best experiences for the newly shoed can be found using small, personal guides. managed. Seasoned guides know what people want out of their experience, and where to find it. Also, many businesses will offer backcountry awareness, medical, and safety courses that are vital for new hobbyists searching to establish themselves as independent winter survivors. Many of the area’s ski resorts including Kirkwood, Northstar, and Squaw have immense areas set-aside with more controlled conditions for cross-country activities like snowshoeing, dogsledding, and cross-country skiing. Psychology’s New God

Continued from page 10 Approaching such thoughts from a literal perspective, or the consensus reality of the conscious mind (be it the client’s or the therapist’s), may reassure the ego for a time, but is unlikely to satisfy the deeper psyche. Perhaps this is why the “effectiveness” of CBT seems to be enhanced with the use psychoactive medication. Antidepressant and anti-anxiety medications typically dull a person’s connection to their emotions, perhaps allowing the ego bounce back with its “rationality” intact, and without all of those pesky emotions. (On the other hand, intrapsychic and experiential forms of therapy may work more effectively if clients are not medicated as it is then easier to access and process feelings, utilizing them as food for change). Other explanations for the apparent effectiveness of CBT have been offered in the past several years. A 2004 paper by psychologist Steven Hayes discusses anomalies in CBT research which indicate that what was once assumed to be a key therapeutic component of CBT, namely, the challenging of clients’ “irrational” thoughts, is not the cause of their improvement after all. In other words, the “active ingredient” of CBT may not be more rational thinking. Some psychologists believe that it is the behavioral components of CBT that are the real catalyst of change. Perhaps, but research by psychologist Bruce Wampold offers another possibility. In an extensive meta-analysis of psychotherapy research, Dr. Wampold found that the methods and techniques unique to a given therapy account for only a modest portion (roughly 8%) of the overall treatment effects. On the other hand, factors common to all therapies accounted for far more (over 70%) of the effects of treatment. These shared factors include things such as the quality of the therapy relationship (trust, rapport and therapist empathy), the client’s confidence in the therapist, and the therapist’s confidence in herself and her methods. What this implies is that the efficacy of CBT stems less from its particular methods

and more from the factors it shares with other psychotherapies. Interestingly, Dr. Wampold’s meta-analyses also showed that despite CBT’s privileged status among therapy approaches, its effectiveness is not appreciably better or worse than most other forms of psychotherapy. This is an interesting development, especially considering the volumes of research done on CBT over the years to bolster its resume (and market share). Research into the efficacy of different types of psychotherapy has focused primarily upon their differences and unique interventions. But Wampold’s research is showing that the quality of psychotherapy hinges more upon the attributes of the therapist than his/her particular methods and theory. Of course, different therapists–like clients–are drawn to different ways of perceiving and engaging the psyche. Finding the right match can be as important in the work of psychotherapy as it is in marriage. Some people have argued that if there is not just one best way to provide psychotherapy. If psychotherapy is as much art as science, should it be considered a science at all? And might you just as well talk to a friend about your problems than see a psychotherapist? Perhaps the best answer is that psychotherapy derives its unique healing power from the fact that it is both science and art. When done well, it is the soul of a healer making contact with the soul and “inner healer” of the client. All of the theory and techniques mean nothing and amount to nothing if this fundamental relationship cannot be established. References: 1. How Healthy is your Heart

S

Submitted by Carol Christian for American Heart Association “Go Red for Women”

ix years ago the American Heart Association made a decision to create a specific focus on women’s cardiovascular health and the Go Red for Women movement was born. In the relatively short time since that decision, hundreds of thousands of women have joined the movement and have been made aware that the number one cause of death for women is heart disease and stroke. Thousands of medical providers are also more informed about the different symptoms and risk factors for women with heart disease.

Heart Disease Facts – America’s Heart Disease Burden Heart disease is incorrectly assumed to be a male disease. True, it is a serious health issue for all Americans. In 2006, 631,636 people died of heart disease. Heart disease caused 26% of deaths - more than one in every four – in the United States. However, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Half of the deaths due to heart disease in 2006 were women. Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease. Every year about

785,000 Americans have a first heart attack. In 2009, heart disease will cost the United States $304.6 billion. This total includes the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity.

Early Action Is Key In a 2005 survey, most respondents – 92% - recognized chest pain as a symptom of a heart attack. Only 27% were aware of all major symptoms and knew to call 9-1-1 when someone was having a heart attack. About 47% of sudden cardiac deaths occur outside a hospital. This suggests that many people with heart disease do not act on early warning signs.

CONSCIOUSHEALTH

Weight Chocolate and Control Written by Cathy Johannsen

T

he perfect Valentine for loved ones who have made the “lose weight” New Year resolution is the gift of Healthy chocolate. There are so many ways Americans try to lose weight. The most tried and true are dieting and exercising. Most people assume that chocolate (candy, that is) contributes to weight gain, and that certainly appears accurate. However, raw unalkalized chocolate that is cold processed, high in natural cocoa nutrients contains no sugars, hydrogenated oils and artificial ingredients, is actually beneficial. Chocolate’s affect on weight control has many components. Cocoa provides nutrition the body needs, reducing the need for “empty calories”. People feel full while eating less. One of the active compounds in unalkalized chocolate is anandamide which helps block the brain’s appetite center. The mind believes something sweet has been consumed which satisfies cravings.

Cocoa and dark chocolate help stabilize blood sugar levels, reducing binging and hypoglycemic episodes. Fiber…in chocolate? Cocoa contains fiber, which helps to block fat absorption and helps people feel full. Dark unalkalized chocolate is a great way to substitute high quality chocolate made with cold-processed cocoa for high calorie, unhealthy sugar and fat loaded chocolate candy. Chocolate has several positive effects on the brain, seratonin levels increase, which helps promote a balanced mood. The Cocoa and dark chocolate stimulates the dopamine and norepinephrine pathways in the brain, lessening depression, which helps reduce appetite and aids in weight loss. Phenythylamine (PEA) helps one feel euphoric and excited. It may also stimulate the production of dopamine in the brain’s pleasure center. This helps counter the depression, often accompanied with dieting.

Stay Young and Sexy With Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement (The Science Explained) By Jonathan V. Wright, MD & Lane Lenard, PhD

D

r. Jonathan Wright has been advocating bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) since the early 1980s and has more experience with this therapy for menopausal women than any other physician in the world. He has written books and hundreds of articles explaining why bio-identical hormones are far superior to hormones concentrated from pregnant mare’s urine – better known as Premarin. That concentrate was unfortunately not bio-identical to humans, and as a result caused an enormous amount of trouble for decades. Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (now Pfizer), the manufacturer of Premarin, had neglected to add an essential hormone, progesterone, to the pregnant mare’s urine concentrate, so in an attempt to solve that problem, came up with something called Provera, which contained a pseudo (pretend) hormone which mimicked progesterone. They later combined Premarin and Provera into something called Prempro. If you were menopausal anytime during the last 25 years, these names are familiar to you. Some of the side effects for Prempro turned out to be increased risk of breast cancer, depression, memory loss, severe headache, dizziness, chest pain, numbness in arms and legs, fluid retention, blood clots, hair loss, acne, skin rashes, weight gain, nausea, and the list goes on.

Dr. Wright has been on a mission for the last quarter century to provide women with the information they need to make intelligent decisions about their own bodies. Unfortunately, he has had to do battle with the pharmaceutical companies the entire time. Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (Pfizer) made $billions selling Premarin, Provera and Prempro to American women. They weren’t happy about losing that revenue when an independent study showed that these drugs caused many life-threatening issues.

There is no money in bio-identical hormones for Big Pharmaceutical companies, so these companies want to alter the natural hormone, call it something else, patent and market it. However, women have been developing the perfect hormones for our bodies for a couple of million years, so if we want to replace those hormones to relieve the symptoms of menopause, it makes sense that we need to use bio-identical hormones. Dr. Wright explains that with these hormones you can extend your youthful years, invigorate your sex life, end hot flashes and other discomforts of menopause, cut your risk of osteoporosis, heart disease and cancer, as well as decrease your risk of Alzheimer’s disease and senility. How do we find a physician who prescribes them? And how do we locate a compounding pharmacy that prepares natural hormones? It’s all in the book. Excessive Barking

How to Control Unwanted Vocalization

Y

our neighbors have complained a number of times and it’s gotten to the point where you need to find a solution. Why is my dog barking so much? Barking is a perfectly natural behavior in dogs but to a certain extent. There may be reasons behind why your dog is looking for attention. We have a few ideas that may help lower your dog’s barking frequency.

Separation Anxiety Barking Dogs are social creatures that require interaction with human beings as well as their fellow pets. You as the owner may need to teach your dog to relax in lonely situations. Start by leaving the dog alone at short periods of time and then coming back once when the dog is silent. You can slowly increase the amount of time for each interval that your pet is left alone to the extent that the dog can be left alone for a long period of time. It is also very important not to give your dog a lot of attention when you leave your home. When your dog is alone, be sure to provide plenty of sources of entertainment like toys, light, warmth or a radio

playing. When your dog doesn’t pay much attention to when you leave, you have accomplished the feat of leaving your dog home alone without concerns.

Alert/Warning Barks In times of danger or a suspicious stranger, this kind of barking may be the one kind that you would not want corrected. Warning barks tend to be rapid and aggressive barks are lower in pitch that may be mixed with growls. You may need to determine the difference between warning barks and barks from fear.

Territorial Barking Whether by sight or smell, barking can occur when your dog sees other dogs or animals. Dogs are wary of mailmen/mailwomen or other strangers that may pass by. You can minimize this kind of barking by slowly acclimating your dog to social areas. If your dog begins barking, speak firmly with “no” or “quiet” and if he/she responds by being quiet, praise them. Consistently encouraging your dog to be quiet will go a long way to reducing excessive territorial barking.

Lack of Exercise/Quality Time If you’ve been neglecting your dog, this should be an obvious reason why your dog has been trying to get your attention by barking. Taking your dog for walks during the morning or in the evening can help spend of that energy needed to tire out your pet. Be sure to provide plenty to alternative ways to keep your pet entertained or feel occupied. Having a multitude of toys, leaving the radio on, or having a neighbor check in on your pet can help ease their boredom. References: 1. Pinched Nerve

Caring for your Nervous System Written by Tony Jensen, D.C.

P

roper care of your nervous system can give you a head start in ensuring health and the highest level of functionality to the immune system. In a research article entitled, “The Winsor Autopsies,” by Dr. David Winsor, studies at the University of Pennsylvania were conducted on 75 humans and 25 cat cadavers to determine if any of the causes of diseased organs were related to pinched nerves. It was found that 221 organs were diseased. In all cases, there was nearly 100% correlation between “...minor curvatures or pinched nerves of the spine and diseases of the internal organs.” Pinched nerves have a recognized effect on diseases of the stomach, lung, liver, gallblader, pancreas, spleen, kidney, prostrate, bladder, the uterus and all other tissues. Your brain and nervous system control the body and immune system; they must function at 100% in order to fight off hits from viruses and bacteria to which you are exposed daily.

When nerve blockage occurs, the interference of messages sent to the brain might be similar to an individual trying to speak to another with a hand held over their mouth while talking. Needless to say, the person on the listening end will not receive the message clearly, only hearing muffled or distorted sounds. The presence of nerve interference in the body decreases communication between the brain and those body parts that the nervous system controls…i.e., stomach, heart, liver, lungs, and kidneys, as well as other organs, extremities and the immune system, causing a decrease in function… and with time, physical symptoms. For example, if the communication or nerve reception going to the stomach and intestinal region is decreased, one must question how effectively the food will be digested and if it is going to deliver optimal nutritional benefits. Due to nerve interference, the stomach may require additional acid in order to properly digest or break down the food that has been consumed. However, the communication will be disrupted, leaving the brain incapable of hearing the exact message from the body. Of course, one can opt for medicinal solutions, but if the problem is a result of nerve interference, that problem is not going to be resolved, the symptoms are simply going to be masked. This allows the cycle to continue…more pills for temporary relief, but no “fixing” of the problem. If the condition is chemical in nature, medication might correct the digestive problems and they may never return. However, if the symptoms persist, the problem is most likely physical, and should be treated with a physical solution by correcting the nerve interference.

Most people are unaware that they have pinched nerves or subluxation degeneration problems. There are four phases of subluxation degeneration: Phase One Subluxation Degeneration is seen in subluxations that have been present for up to twenty years. This phase is characterized with a loss or change in the normal curve in the spine. Segmental motion may be abnormal but overall motion is not affected. More than 80% of people with Phase One Subluxation Degeneration have no pain. When subluxations occur and are left uncorrected, ongoing, relentless changes occur which result in damage to the structure and function of the spine, along with nerve damage and the resulting problems caused from improper nerve supply. Without correction, degeneration continues to Phases II through IV with the possibility of fusion of the diseased spinal segments. If you or someone you care about are experiencing pain, stiffness, soreness, aching, numbness or tingling anywhere in the body, do not put off addressing the problem. Including Chiropractic Care to your health regime is a great option for proper care of your nervous system. References: 1. Sympathetic Segmental Disorders, by Dr. Henry Winsor, November 1921 2. Phases of Subluxation Degeneration from Renaissance from 1970’s by Felessia & Riekeman.

Monthly Health Outlook:

THE SUN IN

AQUARIUS Written By Robert Ayres

T

he Sun enters Aquarius on January 19th. This creates an energetic shift from heavy earthy Capricorn to light airy Aquarius. Capricorn rules our karma and our responsibilities while Aquarius stimulates our sense of freedom and liberation. Being an air sign, Aquarius expresses primarily through the mind, that part of our being that evolutionarily has achieved the greatest degree of freedom. Our ability to think and explore the universe through the realm of ideas is unbounded. To the degree that we choose to limit our thinking and stay within limited belief systems we are limiting our own life. The word man is derived from the Sanskrit word manas, which means to think. The mystery of the human being is contained within the enigma of human thinking. An ancient maxim states that as a person thinks, so they are. Change your thinking and you change your life. Aquarius is dedicated to the liberation of our thinking from the mundane and conventional. Our world could use a fresh, enlightened perspective on what life is all about. Aquarius rules the archetype of the inventor. The individual driven by creative genius lives a life of exploration, experimentation and thinking outside the box. There is a restlessness to this soul who senses that there is more to life than what tradition tells us. The Aquarius-influenced person is motivated to challenge the accepted truths and blaze new trails in mind and thought. As a result, new discoveries are made which add to the storehouse of human knowledge. In the field of medicine and health, Aquarius generally rules alternative healing techniques and methodologies. For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

Aquarius also rules electricity. One of The Waterbearer’s symbols is the lightning bolt. The lightning bolt is a symbol of the transformation of ignorance into enlightenment. Concentrated celestial light descending from the heavens to earth transforms darkness into light. One of the titles given to Uranus, one of the planetary rulers of Aquarius, is The Awakener. Its energy can wake us up from the enchantment of a materialistic world view, to which many have succumbed. Aquarius provides us with the opportunity to expand our consciousness and embrace the celestial, spiritual reality without denying the important role of the material world. A true perspective on life must include the spiritual realities that form the foundation of the mundane world. The state of consciousness ruled by Aquarius is cosmic consciousness or self-realization. It is unbounded awareness of the wholeness of life. From this enlightened perspective, the mind can experience and explore the entire creation. This is a human birthright that is structured into our very being. It just requires us to do the work to unfold this hidden potential. The result is true freedom and liberation. This Aquarian state of consciousness allows us to transcend the limitations of the physical world and live on an unbounded level. We are all, collectively and individually, evolving towards this. When we truly integrate this vision of the paradigm of human life into our awareness, it has a profound quickening effect on our growth and our quality of life. It is a very uplifting and inspiriting energy.

The herbs of Aquarius are primarily focused on relaxing the nervous system. The high vibration of this sign often needs to be balanced and integrated. Chamomile, passion flower, skullcap, and valerian can be taken in the form of teas, tinctures, and capsules for alleviation of nervous and emotional disturbances. Check with your health practitioner on selection and doses. Physiologically, Aquarius rules the pituitary gland, which is the master gland controlling the endocrine system. These organs secrete hormones into the bloodstream and powerfully influence our behavior. The endocrine glands are the physical counterparts to the chakras of the subtle bodies. The chakras, or consciousness centers, are the focused expression of higher forces and powers of consciousness. Within these centers is the latent potential of higher consciousness. We must each cleanse, purify and heal our chakras and endocrine glands in order to consciously work with these higher powers of awareness. The pituitary gland relates to the “third eye” or ajna chakra. It is known as the two-petaled lotus. Its dual nature relates to the balancing and harmonizing of all opposites. These include the polarities of spirit and matter as well as the two hemispheres of the brain. The third eye is the center of clairvoyance. When the ajna chakra is opened, we are then able to truly see and experience reality. This results in fundamental and positive changes in our lives. It is as if we have been living a dream from which we are awakening. With this expansion of consciousness we achieve a state of freedom and transcendence from our old earthbound life.

LOVE Written by Ffjorren Zolfagar

“I wuv you mommy,” she says. Her tiny little fingers comb through my hair as she caresses my face and then whispers, “you’re so pwetty.” Years later, that same little girl runs through the front door and throws her arms around me. She says, “mom, can we have a girl chat tonight? I have so much to tell you.” Moments like these fill my heart with joy and happiness. I feel love and I feel loved. We all experience love in some shape or form, throughout our lives. No matter what our circumstance might be, something or someone sheds their affection upon us. Whether it is our parent, sibling, friend, child or even our pet, adoration is shared. A belief in a higher power might offer a feeling of love as well. Some people find and share love through an interest like writing, singing or playing guitar. Others find love in sharing a cup of coffee with an old friend. Whatever your love looks like or feels like, it is something not easily defined. A word that modern day has twisted into many connotations. The dictionary describes love as “a profoundly tender, passionate affection toward another person.” It is listed as a noun. It is also categorized in the verb family, “to have love or affection for.” Love then is what you do not how you feel. If you open the thesaurus, you will find a myriad of words that are synonyms of the word love, in both verb and noun form. Words like attachment, fidelity and lust. It begs the question, if love is superior and profound, how does lust fit into that category? Lust is a temporary feeling or sensation, not some sort of deeply rooted emotion.

What about the word attachment? Some religious beliefs suggest that having an attachment to a person or thing or idea is not a form of love, but rather a superficial possession because it is conditional based on a emotional need which can often become distorted. Can you love a material possession? What about infidelity? If a couple experiences marital strife and one spouse commits adultery, is that person out of love? Is falling out of love a feeling and if love is a feeling is it then the responsibility of the partner to make the other feel a certain way? When does it become of the responsibility of each of us to find our own happiness one that is not based on any external source? If they work through their differences and offer each other forgiveness, is their love restored? Is the restoration due to cultivating an unconditional love for each, one that involves acceptance and respect? Does love only exist in a long term relationship? If you’ve been dating someone for 2 weeks and say “I love you,” is it real? What if you’ve been dating for three months, 12 months or two years? Is there a timeframe with love? Can your love for someone change over time? How about making love, is it purely sexual or does the meaning go beyond the skin? In which case, if you’re simply having sex, is love not in-

volved? The old cliché, “this baby was made from love,” is it referring to the feeling or action of love? Is it both? If that child was not created or born of love, can he or she provide love to others? Does the lack of love mean hatred, or not loved? Healthy Beginnings would “love” to dig deeper into this topic matter. We will take the word and pull it apart, analyze its bits and pieces and then put it back together again in order to gain insight on the many facets of love within our world.

This article is part of a series; in future issues we will focus on the love for our family. Our first exposure to love; what is the significance? We might also incorporate real life stories into future segments. If you have a “love” story you would like to share, please e-mail it to ffjorren@hbmag.com.

I’ve tried several back support cushions since then & none of them have worked. The reason I like the web back support is that is doesn’t sink or reshape itself, it fits in any chair & it’s very portable. I was so happy to see this ad, I can’t believe I found you! I bought two, one for home & one for my job.” -Pat Olsen • Reno, NV
