MY MIRACLE OF LIFE In November 2005 I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. About 10 days later, I had surgery. Every female thing was taken away plus 1/3 of the bladder. After a couple of weeks I had recovered from the surgery and was started with the chemo which had a lot of side effects. All my hair fell out after 2 weeks. I had no taste and I felt as if my bones were sore. Further more I had trouble breathing while walking. In October 2006, I could feel there was something wrong and the doctor said the tumor was back. My cancer indicator was over 300. At that meeting with the doctor I sensed more or less a death sentence. The nurse’s attitude also confirmed that this was the end, but they never spoke it out loud. I emailed what had happened to Pat, in the United States. She immediately sent Amigo, microhydrin and sango coral calcium to me. After a while, a new email came from Pat saying, “I am coming to kidnap you. There is a Spa here in Reno that has modalities I believe will help you. When can I come?” I answered, “You can come anytime.” She said, “Alright, I have booked us for a flight the 4th of January and back the 6th of February.” Pat came to Sweden and kidnapped me. Over the next three weeks I started to feel better and better. My cancer indicator numbers dropped to 50.4. We had orders from Dr Grange to combine food in the right way. We got pretty good in making changes in the menus and trading bread for extra vegetables. The Spa held a Coming back to Life party in the Grand Sierra Resort Casino. It is one of my highlights. We danced for hours! I can really say I got my life back.

Native to Nevada, Easter Daisy, also known as Townsendia Exscapa is a member of the Sunflower (Asteraceae) family. Named Townsendia after the Pennsylvanian botanist David Townsend, this perennial is characterized by charming, stemless groups of four or five daisies with large yellow egg-yolk centers encircled by long white or pink petals. Easter Daisies only grow to be 1-3 inches tall. These quaint bunches of flowers can be seen in full bloom in open dry plains and desert foothills during spring. It is believed that in the past Native Americans would grind up the roots to treat horse-hoof ailments. Easter Daisies, which can be found in elevations ranging from the Great Plains to 10,000 feet above sea-level, are popular for xeric-landscaping and add a western charm to our desert area.

A Quiet Night’s Sleep….. What a Blessing for Everyone! Recent technology and design bring tools to the modern dental practice to deal with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Although snoring seems physically harmless, it can be a “red flag” for a much more serious and sometimes fatal condition called “obstructive sleep apnea.” There is a new solution available to those who snore or have sleep apnea, an oral appliance similar to an athletic mouth guard that is worn while sleeping. If you are concerned about this condition and want to wake up rested, please call our office at (775) 329-1333 for an appointment.

Green Cleaning: Spring Cleaning with Natural, Earth-friendly Products
S
pringtime is a time for cleaning and a time to respect Mother Earth. While a good scrubbing for your home is important, we all know that cleaning is an often tedious chore. Did you know cleaning your home can be dangerous to your health as well? Cleaning often involves the use of potentially harmful products, which can be toxic, corrosive, irritating and flammable. Every time you use a cleaning product, you are absorbing its contents into your skin and breathing it into your lungs. Your kids and pets can be negatively affected by cleaning products as well. Any product carrying the words CAUTION, WARNING, DANGER or POISON is harmful to living things and should be avoided. Thanks to Wild Oats Natural Marketplace, achieving a spotless and squeakyclean house can be safe with chemicalfree, earth-friendly cleaning products. Wild Oats carries a wide variety of these products such as: biodegradable detergents, citrusb as ed s ol ve n ts , unbleached paper products and more. Wild Oats offers natural, non-toxic household cleaning products that will help reduce the level of toxicity and amount of household hazardous waste around your house. Unlike conventional household products, natural cleaning products are made with biodegradable materials and without harmful chemicals. This makes them a better choice for you and your family. In addition to non-toxic products, you’ll find hypoallergenic laundry detergents and fabric softeners, dishwashing liquid and household cleaners, as well as environmentally friendly paper towels and bath tissue at Wild Oats. As we celebrate Earth Day in April, there is no better time than now to shop Wild Oats for natural, earth-friendly cleaning products and start cleaning green in your home. Dr. Kurt Grange, Ph.D., N.D. By Erina Fischer
M
any alternative physicians develop because of the feeling that western medicine is failing to prevent chronic disease. Interestingly, Dr. Kurt Grange, Ph.D., N.D. began his journey into alternative medicine while seeking natural ways to increase athletic performance. Dr. Kurt Grange, Ph.D., N.D. has an impressive background in natural health with a Master’s degree in Holistic Nutrition, a Ph.D. in Nutrition, a Doctorate in Naturopathy and he is a current member of the American Naturopathic Medical Association. Today, Dr. Grange is a health and wellness consultant, educator and author. A life long athlete, Dr. Grange has played and/or coached volleyball, football, softball, has a black belt in karate and has taught women’s self-defense. His admiration for the human body in action led him to pursue his first two bachelor degrees from the University of Utah in Physical Education and Health. He went on to earn his Masters in Biophysiology and taught Human Anatomy and Physiology for 30 years. Always interested in the benefits that nutrition imparted to athletes, Dr. Grange along with Dr. Jeff Bennert, searched for ways to increase athletic performance naturally. That was when the Japanese company, Marine Bio, found the two doctors and introduced them to Sango Coral Calcium. The water-soluble calcium supplement restores the acid-alkaline balance and oxygenates the body in such levels that when Dr. Grange and Dr. Bennert conducted a small experiment on athletes they noted astonishing improvements in athletic ability. The athletes were able to reach higher levels of activity and needed less recovery time. They were able to “break through their athletic wall” as Dr. Grange says. The athletes also reported positive side-effects, such as more energy and describing a sense of “feeling smarter”, which is attributable to the increase of oxygen to the brain. Their cholesterol and blood pressure both dropped dramatically. Dr. Grange says that all of these astounding benefits had to do with the bodies of the athletes achieving “homeostasis” thanks to the calcium supplement aiding the acid-alkaline balance, which in turn normalized their pH levels. The achievement of “homeostasis” reversed chronic inflammation in their bodies and left energy for the body to start dealing with other health issues. It was with this discovery that Dr. Grange was introduced to the powers of natural medicine.
“It filled in a lot of blanks in my teaching of Human Anatomy and Physiology,” Dr. Grange says. Dr. Grange chose to continue his education in natural health and earned a second Masters Degree in Holistic Nutrition, as well as a Ph.D. in Nutrition. He describes how his nutritional degrees intuitively led him to Naturopathy. He earned a Doctor of Naturopathy and joined the American Naturopathic Society in Las Vegas. Dr. Grange recognized his desire to teach at a public level, when he attended a meeting on natural health products for roughly 2,000 people. Oddly enough, the main speaker came down with a bout of food poisoning and had to excuse himself during the seminar. In an effort to help, Dr. Grange, a natural speaker, stood up in front of the large crowd and began to share what he knew about natural health. Realizing then that he wanted to work directly with the public, he began his own seminars and seeing private clients on a regular basis. Dr. Grange described how major scientific breakthroughs in nutrition and natural health occurred between WWI and WWII, but were put on the back shelf because of the need to support the war efforts. New interest in these subjects has caused these breakthroughs to resurface today as part of the mainstream search for organic colutions. Thus, “[Natural health] is not a new concept, but technology is making it more available” Dr. Grange says. For instance, the amazing health benefits of spirulina, chlorella and blue-green algae have been known for a long time. The omega-3 oils found in these “Superfoods” can now be extracted from the source and encapsulated in higher concentrations thanks to technology. On an interesting side note, fish oils, which are popular for their omega-3 fatty acid content, actually derive the acids from the liver of the fish after ingesting the spirulina and algae. In other words, the fish don’t actually make these fatty acids naturally, but the green “Superfoods” do. When asked about his hopes for health care, Dr. Grange stated that he would like to see increased awareness of the healing powers of detoxification, better nutrition and supplementation – that the American diet does not typically supply today. Dr. Grange sees patients two days a week at Circle of Life Spa located on Longley Lane in Reno. For more information on Dr. Kurt Grange, visit his website at www.drgrange.com or call Circle of Life Spa at (775) 825-7727. See ad on inside front cover.

zzz Sleep: A Spiritual z z Path
zz
P
erhaps you can relate to this: when I miss out on a good night of sleep, the next day I live, move and think from a place of scarcity rather than abundance – I’m impacted on every level, including spiritually. Millions of us are awake when we should be sleeping and resting, or falling asleep when we should be creating and shining. The research is sobering. Most cases of insomnia stem from issues surrounding stress–environmental, nutritional, emotional, physical, even spiritual. Much of what keeps us from getting quality sleep are the choices that we make throughout the day. Have you ever noticed that watching the late night news while suppressing your heartache over the world politics with a tub of ice cream and balancing your check book does not allow for a sound night of sleep? This, after asking yourself to perform multi-tasking miracles for the precious sixteen hours, tethered to cell phones, voice and emails, then negotiating with a plastic clown to give you a balanced meal through a drive-thru window, and wondering if a coffee intravenous feed would be out of the question?! You do have other choices. You can re-create balance and once again live with the natural rhythm that is innately yours to uncover and fully realize. First, we need to be alright with the idea of being in the world and not of it. You do not have to subscribe to the all too pervasive “conspicuous consumption” model for living. In other words, we all have choices to “consume.” The media, for example (television, newspaper, radio, magazines), that we allow into our thought atmosphere can disrupt sleep and personal balance. Certain foods we eat (those with refined and empty calories) leave us unsatisfied, restless and “hungry” for more. Choose differently! We can establish an overall well-being by leveraging key practices that satisfy the spirit and nourish a healthy night’s sleep.
zzz
Bookends for Balance: One way to experience greater quality of sleep is to create what I refer to as “bookends” (the beginnings and the end of the day). Bookends can help keep us mindful and centered with what truly nourishes our mind, body, spirit and sleep. Choose to begin and end each day with a personal practice for balance and peace. For example, a morning meditation practice, even for just a few minutes, serves us and our “chemistry” in a variety of ways: by establishing a healthier “belly breathing” pattern, we can help support and build stress-fighting neurotransmitters (the brain’s chemical messengers to the body) that help keep us in balance and allow us to better manage our mental state and the choices we make throughout the day. When we begin the day with an attitude of “Good morning, God!” rather than “Good God, its morning!” The same is true at night. We tend towards more love for ourselves and others. Chronic “stinkin’ thinkin’” can sabotage a good night’s rest and have a negative residual that impacts other elements of our wellness. Dr. James Rouse is a naturopathic docotr and the Chief Balance Coach for The Balance Company™. He is also a nationally recognized expert on wellness. More on Dr. James and The Balance Company can be found at www.thebalancecompany. com/usa. See ad on page 24.

tralized functionality. As a result, there is no plumbing on exterior walls, saving energy and eliminating freezing. The hotel utilizes a Rinnai tankless boiler system. The design of the building has resulted in very short footage runs from each hot water heater to each showerhead. Each building features three instantaneous hot water heaters for the
potable water system, and one Bideras instantaneous heater for the hydronic space heating system. There was initially concern when designing the system that the instantaneous hot water heaters might not keep up with customer hot water demand, considering the extremely cold water coming into the system. To assist the instantaneous domestic hot water heaters, the system was designed to enter through a water jacket on the hydronic floor system holding tank before proceeding to the hot water heaters. This design allowed the temperature of incoming water to reach luke-warm before entering the Rinnai instantaneous heaters, minimizing the temperature extremes the heaters would experience. The Rinnai system allows each tankless water heater to “talk” to each other as demand increases or decreases. This is an extremely energy efficient system which currently runs off natural gas, but at any time can be converted to solar hydronic. The hydronic in-floor heating system provides a minimum level of heating for both the hallways and individual rooms. If a customer would like more heat, a secondary system has adjusted the room temperature to desired setting.

Vision, Light & Quality of Life
T
he majority of what we perceive about our world and our surroundings comes to us through our sense of vision. One of the major factors which affects how visual information is processed is the amount and quality of light available. Supplementation of light, especially in the morning hours, has been shown to have a beneficial effect on major depressive conditions as well as mood disorders. Light therapy was originally used as a treatment for seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in winter, but it has been found to be very beneficial in treating depression at any time of the year. When we speak here of light, we are referring to full spectrum, natural light, such as normal light from the sun. Lack of adequate exposure to this type of light is becoming more and more of a problem in contemporary living and working environments. If someone also lives in an area where sunlight is relatively scarce during the winter, as in the Pacific Northwest (i.e. Seattle-type areas), then the problem can be confounded further. Typical indoor lighting falls far short of providing the benefits of daytime outdoor light levels. This can affect the human neurological system that drives hormone cycles and periods of alertness up and down, also known as the circadian rhythm. Research has shown that people who are vulnerable to depression related to light deprivation have a critical need for regular, natural light exposure in the early AM hours to avoid oversleeping and depression. In addition, even for those not prone to depression, regular exposure to natural light early in the morning has been shown to have a beneficial effect on motivation, energy levels, appetite control and elevated moods throughout the day. Now, if you live in an area that is blessed with abundant sunshine throughout the year, getting this therapeutic dosage of early morning natural sunlight is simple- just go outside or go for a walk. In many areas, however, this is not possible, especially in the winter. Certain areas in the Pacific Northwest are cloudy and/or rainy much of the winter, leaving the alternative

of supplementing with artificial light to obtain the benefits of the missing natural sunlight as a viable option. Full spectrum incandescent and fluorescent light is available and can be of immense help in combating SAD in such areas. Be careful to avoid excessive UV exposure with such lighting and limit exposure to 20 minutes or so in the early AM hours. Natural, full spectrum lighting is available for workplace (office) lighting that gives more of a natural sunlight feeling and avoids excessive UV exposure. It is absolutely amazing how both productivity and mood can be greatly elevated by switching drab, commonplace fluorescent lighting in the office to full-spectrum fluorescent lighting. The drawback is that this type of lighting can be very expensive and difficult to find in some areas. Another important consideration deals with eye wear. Modern lenses should be treated with a good antireflective coating. This not only eliminates annoying reflections and glare, but it allows more usable light to enter the eyes, resulting in clearer perception , especially under low-light situations, such as driving at night or in the rain/snow. Modern, polarizing sunglass lenses work to eliminate reflected glare while allowing better contrast and sharper definition of objects in bright light. Interestingly, vision is the most easily enhanced and protected sense of our five senses. In this series of 6 articles, we will examine how we can enhance our precious gift of vision. Readers suggestions for future articles are welcome. Drs. Travis and Cheryl Adlington are a husband and wife optometric team with a private practice in Reno, NV. What Is The Lymphatic System?
T
he single most important challenge in health care is eliminating toxins from the body. Lymphatic functions include: transporting nutrients and oxygen to the cells and tissues, removing protein waste and other waste matter (including environmental toxins) from the cells’ and the body’s interstitial (in between) regions, maintaining fluid balance in the connective tissue and transporting fatty acids from the small intestine to the liver for storage and later use. These functions are impaired when the lymphatic system becomes congested or constricted (see below), affecting the body’s ability to rid itself of its own waste material. When the system is blocked, we also become defenseless against attacks by virus, fungi and bacteria. Infection-fighting cells are prevented from destroying germs, and cell-nourishing elements are prevented from reaching our blood. Over time other body systems that rely on the lymphatic system for waste removal become compromised, setting the stage for pain, inflammation and disease. Contributors to lymph constriction include emotional stress, air and water pollution, work environment, industrialization, food/product additives, surgical and drug intervention and genetically modified foods. Functional disturbances of the lymphatic system are found in chronic immune disorders, chronic metabolic disorders (obesity, diabetes), chronic pain syndromes and accelerated molecular and tissue aging. Edema (water trapped in the tissues causing swelling) is the result of blocked lymph and often caused by surgery or an injury. Bumps or pain/tenderness in an area may indicate a breakdown in the mechanical functioning of the system. The lymphatic system operates the same in both sexes, but when men have prostate issues there is generally a blockage of the lymphatic fluid in the inguinal nodes (located at the bend of the leg). Women with breast issues usually have blockage at the axillary nodes located in the armpits, extending towards the breasts. Illnesses as wide ranging as allergies, fibrocystic disease, and cancer can be related to lymph congestion. The Light Beam Generator (LBG) represents one of the most exciting new therapeutic avenues for improving the health of immune functions. It is a safe, natural, non-invasive method, which achieves its results on an energetic level. The most specific and best use of the LBG is reducing or eliminating edema. Treatment with the LBG puts the correct charge back into the cells and breaks up the pooled wastes. The use of SCALAR RESONANCE to destabilize viruses, fungi and bacteria that feed on the pooled waste, makes it particularly effective for reducing symptoms associated with sinus congestion, intestinal candida or even respiratory illnesses. Cells have an electromagnetic charge that either binds them together or keeps them apart, and when the cells in the system clump together and bond electrically with water, it can create disease conditions of swelling, inflammation, or abnormal growths.
The LBG is able to separate these cells from each other and their accumulated fluids. The result is that swelling, and other blockages are dispersed rapidly and completely. With proper treatment the unnatural additives in our food, including the steroids that mimic hormones and attach to proteins, can be flushed out. Day to day factors like eating habits, body structure, nutrition, medication and mental health should also be addressed to provide a successful formula for restoring health. ONE TREATMENT WITH THE LBG IS EQUIVALENT TO 8-10 MANUAL LYMPH TREATMENTS! soils, not mineralize them. These fertilizers usually contain only phosphorus, potash (potassium), and nitrogen. What about the other 72 or so minerals the body needs? The following is a verbatim excerpt of U.S. Senate document 264 that was presented to the United States Senate in 1936: “The alarming fact is that foods - fruits and vegetables and grains - are now being raised on millions of acres of land that no longer contain enough of certain needed minerals and are nutritionally starving us - no matter how much of them we eat!”

“No longer does a balanced and fully nourished diet consist merely of so many calories or certain vitamins or a fixed proportion of starches, proteins, and carbohydrates. We now know that it must contain, in addition, something like a score of minerals. It is bad news to learn from our leading authorities that 99 percent of the American people are deficient in these essential minerals, and that a marked deficiency in any one of the more important minerals actually results in disease. Any upset of the balance, any considerable lack of one or another element, however microscopic the body requirement may be, and we sicken, suffer, and shorten our lives”. Even though this report was written in 1936 and presented to the U.S. Senate, soil conditions have not improved but, in fact, have become worse. Modern agriculture practices have severely depleted the quality and quantity of the minerals and vitamins that exist in our fruits and vegetables. When you add to this our modern processes of adding pesticides, picking before ripe, cooking, refining, pasteurizing, processing, canning, freezing, microwaving, irradiating, and long storage times the quality of our produce is

You ARE what you EAT!
lacking serious nutritional elements. And we don’t even know yet what the detrimental result of genetic engineering of plants may be. At the Earth Summit Statistics meeting in 1992, experts revealed information showing that farmlands in North America were 85% micro nutrient depleted. In fact, an informational pamphlet from the US Agricultural department stated that there is 10% less minerals and vitamins in our fruits and vegetables today than there were 10 years ago.
Another trend that robs us of necessary organic vitamins and minerals is that many of our vegetables and especially our fruits are picked before they are ripe. Plants do not deposit minerals in their fruits as they are growing. That would be a waste of valuable resources because not all of the developing fruit will reach ripe maturity. They wait until the ripening process begins before depositing minerals and developing the vitamins. When they are picked before they are ripe there are very little minerals or usable vitamins available for us to assimilate and use. The lack of sufficient, essential nutrition is one reason that in 2002, The Journal of the American Medical Association and the Surgeon General recommended that every American use a daily multi-nutrient supplement to address the health dilemma of nutritionally poor diets. How many people do you know who only buy organically grown produce from soil that has been properly enriched with minerals? How many of these prepare it fresh or only lightly steamed? How many people do you know that eat the recommended four to five servings per day of fruits and vegetables? Remember, these are MINIMUM health requirements. Is there anyone who wants only MINIMUM HEALTH?
Do we need organic nutritional supplements? YES! There are a variety of different supplements out there. An efficient way to get many of the essential vitamins and minerals you need is to take the organic Amigo products. They are created from mature ripe fruit berries that contain potent, fully usable organic vitamins and minerals which your body can assimilate and use immediately. It is a great way to help get the correct organic vitamins and minerals your body requires.

The Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education
By Arlyn Zones, Practitioner & Trainer, Feldenkrais Resources, Berkeley, CA
D
o you have pain? Do you have trouble focusing your attention? Have you stopped doing activities you used to enjoy? If you want to reconnect with your natural abilities to move, think and feel, then read on… The Feldenkrais Method® is a unique and sophisticated approach to human understanding, learning and functional change. Developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984) during 40 years of research as a scientist, physicist, engineer and judo master, Dr. Feldenkrais’ own physical problems led him to his lifelong exploration to improve our movement and functioning in general. The method involves the use of movement and attention to change and grow beyond our presumed limitations. Our patterns of movement and thought are deeply embedded within our nervous systems; over time, these may become outmoded or dysfunctional; we loose the effortless coordination that we had as children. Old injuries throw our systems out of balance, and reappear as secondary skeletal and muscular problems. The Feldenkrais Method® works with the connections between our nervous system and all aspects of our functioning — i.e., how we organize our intentions into actions. These intentions must be realized through the sensory-motor area of the brain and this is the part of our brain that is re-educated in the Feldenkrais work. Functionally-based variation, innovation and differentiation in sensory motor activity free us from our habitual patterns and allow new patterns of thinking, moving and feeling to emerge. Using movement to explore the biological and cultural aspects of attention, intention and cognition, the work delves deeply into how human development, learning and movement interrelate. People who suffer from chronic pain, restricted movement, or neurological and/or psychological problems, may find great
benefit from the Feldenkrais Method®, as well as people who want to find renewed ease in their every day movements, including rest and sleep. Learning to move with less effort makes daily life easier. The Feldenkrais Method® deals with the relationship between movement and thought, hence increased mental awareness and creativity accompany physical improvements. The Feldenkrais Method® is an unusual melding of motor development, biomechanics, psychology and martial arts, recognized for its demonstrated ability to improve posture, flexibility, coordination, self-image and to alleviate pain and muscular tension. It consists of 2 compelling and versatile applications – Awareness Through Movement (ATM) and Functional Integration – modalities that harness the nervous system’s innate ability to self-organize toward more effective and intelligent action/movement. Since Dr. Feldenkrais’ first class of students in the 1970s, more than 3000 Feldenkrais practitioners have been trained worldwide in the US, Canada, Israel, Australia, and Europe. Quote From Dr. Andrew Weil: “I have long been intrigued by this subtle form of retraining the nervous system, which I recommend to patients whose movement has been restricted by injury, cerebral palsy, stroke, fibromyalgia, or chronic pain. I find it [The Feldenkrais Method] to be much more useful than standard physical therapy. I also believe that the Feldenkrais Method can help older people achieve greater range of motion and flexibility, and help all of us feel more comfortable in our bodies.” Arlyn has worked with the Feldenkrais Method for ~ 30 years. Her students range from age 9 months to 85 yrs. Treatment with
Biocompatible Dentistry
T
o recap our previous articles on holisitc and biological dentistry, we touched on (1) the source and correlation of oral and systemic disease and (2) examined the importance of accurate history and diagnosis. Now we need to look at the goals of treatment, both conventional and integrative (some would say “holistic), so that combining different approaches and therapies will achieve our treatment goals. Treatment begins with a careful choice of biocompatible dental materials, as it is paramount to not introduce harmful materials into the body. It is believed that mercury is a toxic substance and should not be used in the body. There are blood tests that recommend dental materials that are satisfactory or not satisfactory for each individual patient. It is an antigen-antibody test that identifies prior allergens in the dental materials. Another method for dental material compatibility is kinesiology or muscle testing for individual compatibility. #
The next major concern is treating periodontal infection (gum disease). Conventional treatment relies on professional periodic cleaning reflected by the patient’s needs; it could be at two, three, four, or six- month intervals. More serious conditions would require deep cleaning to eliminate what are called periodontal pockets. Following basic treatment we would give home care instructions and recommend the necessary home care products to get the job done, i.e., flossing, use of the water pik, and other protocols that work. Effective treatment involves these tried and true methods and also advances in new modalities. Recent data suggests the use of natural products and methods and the use of -

biological medicines that are effective in treating oral conditions. Biological medicines based on a hundred years of research, in combination with each other and with traditional treatment can be very effective. We strive to lower the viral, bacterial and fungal load on the body so that the immune system can function at its optimum level. The end goal for the patient is total health, balance and homeostasis. We believe there must be critical collaboration between all the healing practioners, thus achieving total body health. The best advice, “see your dentist and hygienist, they are concerned about your total health.
the expenditures in 2006 were found to be lower for both diseases when periodontal treatment was completed for this group. To underline the importance of this oral-systemic disease correlation, on May 23, 2006, Cigna Insurance and their National Dental Director Miles Hall, D.D.S. announced the expansion of its Oral Health INTEGRATION Program to include the treatment of periodontal disease for members with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. If qualified, they may receive 100% re-imbursement for periodontal care. WOW! If the insurance companies are concerned about the relationship between oral health and total body health, then you as patients and we as dentists should be concerned too!
In closing, according to the health care industry experts, the increased cost for diabetes and cardiovascular disease since 2002 is $535.1 billion dollars. By Zeny N. Ocean, D.D.S. Caught up in the speed of life? I
t had been a busy day and largely self-imposed with activities I felt were worthwhile and engaging. The yoga class started in twenty minutes as the whir of the computer silenced, like an exhalation, indicating that the office/computer portion of the day had been completed. Feeling like a champion of progress, I transitioned into yoga-mind readying myself for the mindful stretching and intentional breathing that are the studio hallmarks.
achieving sense of progress in our days. There are more timesaving devices at our fingertips but we are busier than ever. The time-saving promises of technology give us smaller, faster, and more convenient ways of relating to our world without broadening our ability to interact with other people in novel ways. The breakneck speeds at which these promises are delivered can make one feel as if they are falling behind a train that values the destination but not the passengers.
It’s in transition that most of my original thinking is spawned, as for me distinctions are made in seeing the same things in novel juxtapositions. At five minutes until mat time I got caught in traffic and felt the first pangs of frustration capture my diaphragm and steal away my spacious awareness. “Late to yoga class” is an interesting paradoxical relationship that happens more than I would like in my life.
I refer to the concept of the speed-of-life quite often when I speak to my patients about the quality of their lives. The current expectation is that being busy is synonymous with getting ahead and that busy people are important people. It’s a tough current to swim against because there is so much reward we gain from getting busy. Being busy is ultimately a feeling of striving for something that we don’t have and chasing the elusive carrot. To reclaim the spacious quality in our lives it’s important to put the right perspective on being busy. One of my meditation teachers advocates the usage of what he calls “alarm clocks for awareness” in our daily lives that serve as reminders to return to a certain state of awareness conducive to living in the moment. Like awakening from a night’s sleep, awakening to the moment can provide a fresh perspective on an otherwise challenging or distracted way of being in our lives. For some this is a return to the breath, others a positive thought like gratitude, or for others a re-ignition into their passion. It’s so easy to become immersed in our circumstance and forget what it is that keeps us connected when we are high-centered in a pile of logistics, expectations, and demands. Another wise teacher simply says, “Get un-caught up”!
“Late to yoga class” is an interesting paradoxical relationship that happens more than I would like in my life.
Fortunately I’d had a fresh lesson in marketing and had been studying the best marketers of all, the pharmaceutical reps, when the words “Shivasana” crossed my mind in the form of a very convenient blue-green pill that when taken can induce the relaxed state that is worked for in a yoga class. The cost: about the price of a yoga class, the pay-off: save time, stay home and sweat-free, be blissed out. The notion of shivasana: “the blue-green pill of repose” cracked me up and broke the frustrated moment into an easy transition into the yoga class. To slow down the speed of my life I had to step out of the current events in my headlines and return to that eternal sense of breathing in time with movement. Culturally we’ve become a very busy lot as it seems all of this convenience has made it difficult to slow down the over-

Words like pray, inspire, release, courage, compassion, and love all seem to bring me into a state of grace. • Use post-it reminders with key words (like breathe, smile, lighten-up, You are enough!) to remind you of important qualities or actions in your life. Place these in areas that you visit regularly like the bathroom mirror, the rear-view mirror or steering wheel in your car, your computer monitor, the refrigerator door, or the toilet seat. The more resources we have at decisive moments the better the quality of our decisions. • Change your posture to change your mind. When we assume a posture of confidence our self-esteem is kindled and when we assume a posture of relaxing our agenda often times will soften. Create anchor points that remind you of insights that seem important. I use the space between my thumb and index finger as an anchor point where I draw a small circle to help me remember something I’m working on internally or need to do externally. Kaiser is among the leading hospital chains that looks continuously for noninvasive ways to accelerate patient healing while reducing the time and cost of their hospital stays. In the process of doing this, Kaiser undertook controlled studies of a number of alternative healing modalities, including energy work. Energy work is a general term for modalities that are based on the idea that the human body consists of energy fields that can be stimulated through various techniques in order to promote wellness. In 2004, Kaiser tested various kinds of energy work see if it could speed up healing, relieve fear, pain, and immobility, and if so, which method(s) would consistently provide the best results. At the end of 12 months, 3 energy modalities stood out in this regard, providing patients with reduced pain, speedy recovery, increased mobility, vitality, and a sense of well being. These included acupuncture, Reiki, and Integrated Awareness®. Patients treated with Integrated Awareness® before surgery experienced a reduction of fear, increased calm and readiness for surgery. Following surgery, these patients required fewer pain medications and recovered quickly from their surgeries. Integrated Awareness® was deemed to have saved patients the cost of medications and reduced doctor and hospital expenditures, due to shorter recovery times. Emotionally, reduced levels of fear and pain also appeared to be associated with Integrated Awareness® treatments.
So what is Integrated Awareness®? The principle behind Integrated Awareness® is to be totally aware of self, simultaneously in the present moment, and in the past. When you are fully integrated in this way (meaning your mind is NOT off doing something else) all your energy is directed to the task at hand, be it healing, problem solving, an athletic event or simply being in focus for life’s inevitable ups and downs.
In other words, when you are fully present, all of your vital life force is available. The experience is of peace, power and fulfillment. Integrated Awareness® was designed by using The Body’s Map of Consciousness, the fundamentals of which are that every site in your physical structure vibrates (is energized) at a different rate. Bone vibrates at a different rate than fluid. Nerves vibrate differently than connective tissue and these vibrations are all connected to our consciousness. The concept of IA® is that different tissues, emotions, thoughts and energetics have different octaves of vibration - some clash with, blend into, or complement others. Similar to music, vibrations of thoughts and emotions will sometimes resonate and be in harmony with your physical structure, or be in disharmony. The greater the disharmony, the greater the opportunity for illness. The objective, then, is to balance or harmonize the various physical, mental and emotional vibrations, to achieve a higher degree of health. In Integrated Awareness®, it is believed that our thoughts operate within a different vibrational spectrum than do our emotions — e.g., thoughts use a narrow band of energy, not very charged, but rigid. Emotions operate across a band of highly reactive charged energy; they are fluid with a polarity pull. The emotional body has an orientation to the past, licking it’s wounds, while the mental body has an orientation towards the future, where it creates predictable models of what is going to happen next. These complexities too must be balanced. Cheryl Blossom is a certified Reiki & Integrated Awareness® Practitioner/Instructor. She has designed the Quantum Awareness and Health Program and is Director of Reno’s Institute for Inspired Living. Ever Wonder Why Soap Has Bubbles?
T
ypically, the answer is synthetic chemicals. The larger, luxurious, longer-lasting suds and bubbles which we have become accustomed to are pretty and fun, but actually bear no relationship to cleansing or cleaning performance! This is just one example of the thousands of products used everyday that expose our bodies to harmful toxins, which are considered ‘safe’ for our frequent use. ...people are exposed to hundreds of chemicals over the course of a day... people face multiple sources of exposure from multiple consumer products... Day after day, we are being bombarded with more and more of these potentially toxic chemicals. Currently, there are approximately 80,000 chemicals in use with new ones being introduced on a daily basis.
Consumers believe that ‘if it’s on the market, it can’t hurt me.’ And, this belief is sometimes wrong.
How Natural Is It?
Common Indicators of Natural Soap Products: • Color: Natural colors are generally more opaque and not as clear. • Smell: A natural scent will smell like the ingredient and what it is composed of, not a perfume. • Sudsing: Bubbles and sudsing can be created using natural ingredients; however, the bubbles are smaller, lighter, more delicate and will not last as long. Sudsing will be less.

urdock is any of a group of biennial thistles in the genus Arctium. Its leaves can grow to 18” long. There are many benefits of the burdock plant. Throughout history, the seeds were compressed to make a mixture effective in cleansing the bloodstream, easing pain from arthritis, and treating gout, rheumatism, ulcers, acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Its cancer-curing properties were also utilized in Russia and India. The Chinese used it as an aphrodisiac, and found it effective in treating infertility and impotence. Burdock is easily obtainable as an ingredient in teas, ointments, or pills. It is a powerful diuretic, and is safe to be taken internally, externally, or as food. However, it is important to make sure that the herb is pure. Some reports have indicated that burdock could have toxic properties, since cases of illness were reported involving burdock tea. However, further analysis showed that the negative effects were the result of impure
burdock root. Some belladonna, which contains atropine, had contaminated the burdock root. It is important to look at the source and purity of burdock root before obtaining it. In the United Kingdom, burdock and dandelion are used to make a popular drink. It is a sparkling soft drink with natural ingredients, sweetened with fruit juice. The ingredients include carbonated water, apple juice concentrate, caramel color, citric acid, natural dandelion & burdock flavoring (0.2%), dandelion extract (0.1%), burdock root extract (0.1%). It is caffeine free. You can purchase it on the website below. You’ll find Natural Dandelion and Burdock ingredients and information on other products at http://www.goodnessdirect. co.uk. All About Raw Food Dr Larry Siegler DVM
O
ur animal companions are natural hunters and carnivores; just look at their ancestry. The dog at your feet (or on your sofa) has evolved from the wolf, and it’s digestive system is virtually the same despite thousands of years of domestication. They have very short intestinal tracts geared to the consumption and digestion of raw foods. Dogs are considered “omnivores” as they eat a variety of grasses, berries and vegetables in addition to prey. The cat on your lap is a true or “obligate” carnivore (meat only diet) and is specially designed by nature to hunt small rodents and birds. Her digestive tract, as well, is intended to assimilate raw meat best.
The Benefits of Raw
Raw food diets have been shown to help the body deal with many common ailments such as flea infestations, hot spots, continual shedding, poor dental & gum health, allergies, gastro-intestinal problems such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease, immune disorders and degenerative diseases. Diet is the foundation of health. The fresher the diet, the more nutrients are available for the animal’s system to utilize in building immunity, healing from illness and warding off disease. Raw diets have been common practice in European countries for decades, especially Germany, where it is commonly recommended by veterinarians. The fear of feeding raw meat in

this country seems to stem from a fear of salmonella, e. coli and parasites. In over 10 years of feeding raw food and seeing countless animals on raw food diets, salmonella and e. coli have not been seen to be a problem. (Remember, their digestive systems are designed to accommodate raw meat.) Parasites could be contracted through eating wild, whole prey or game meats, but is much less likely from properly handled human grade meats. Infection is more likely to occur through ingestion of feces or soil, or poorly handled meat. The actual research cited in the US in support of a raw diet is rather convincing. A long-term study conducted by Francis M. Pottenger, Jr., M.D. between 1932 to 1942 was initiated a bit by accident. Dr. Pottenger kept cats as laboratory animals for experiments in human health. As his research and cat population grew, he resorted to feeding them raw meat scraps from a local packing plant instead of cooked kitchen leftovers. Within a few months, he noticed distinct improvements in the cats eating raw meat. This prompted Dr. Pottenger to undertake a whole new experiment: he segregated cats into different groups - some of which were fed a cooked meat diet and others who received a raw meat diet. All observations were noted in great detail over many generations of cats. At the end of the study Dr. Pottenger concluded that cats fed a heat processed diet were deficient and suffered from innumerable ailments ranging from low immunity, irritability, and allergies; to skeletal deformation, organ malfunction, poor development during kittenhood, low birth rate, birth defects, infertility, and shortened life-span.
WHAT IS RAW FEEDING ABOUT?
Information collected by Jane Anderson, Blue Grace Portuguese Water Dogs A raw diet provides a range of benefits that commercial dog diets can never hope to even closely match. These benefits include: 1. No doggy odour 2. Naturally cleans teeth - no need for toothbrushes, de-scaling jobs, or gum disease 3. The time it takes for a dog to chew a raw meaty bones give their stomach adequate time to get the acids moving 4. Much less stools produced - and they are firm, and turn chalky after a couple of days 5. Decreased or non-existant vet bills (your dogs are healthier!) 6.Less cost for dog food - commercial dog foods are ludicriously expensive 7. Mirrors what a dog would be getting in the wild - and certainly even the modern day dog has a digestive tract exactly the same as a wolf
8. Puppies develop at a more appropriate rate - and quick growth spurts are avoided. A GOOD breeder will want to stop fast growth in any pup. 9. The ripping and chewing involved in eating raw meaty bones develops the jaw, neck, and shoulder muscles of the dog. Commercial dog foods will never assist in this important muscle development.
WHAT PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED: People who have switched their dogs to a raw diet from commercial dog foods have found the following: 1. Dogs who were previously un-energetic, and sluggish become completely new dogs once the raw diet feeding begins 2. Allergies their dogs previously had on commercial foods, disappear once they start with the raw diet 3. Arthritis has significantly reduced or disappeared in some dogs switched to raw 4. Better weight control 5. No more doggy odour!
6. Their dogs are living longer on a raw diet than what their other dogs previously had survived on commercial dog foods 7. That their bitches managed their pregnancies better 8. Better weight and survival figures in puppies

The Most Missed Diagnosis In Medicine M illions of people have a medical condition that they don’t know about. Sometimes they develop it in their childhood years, but that is relatively uncommon. Usually it starts later, in their thirties and forties. By the age of fifty, almost half of everyone will have this condition. This condition is the most common cause of high cholesterol. It also causes weight gain, fatigue, increased susceptibility to infections, mood disorders, ADD, joint and muscle pains, and a host of other symptoms. The worst part about this disorder is that it is usually misdiagnosed. I’m not talking about a disease. Medical doctors don’t usually mis-diagnose a disease. I’m talking about a condition – the most missed diagnosis in medicine. I’m talking about low thyroid function also known as hypothyroidism.
mercury (common in vaccines, fish, and silver dental fillings); and x-rays --dental, chiropractic and medical.
Homeopathic use of thyroid hormonal replacement is different from allopathic use.
Allopathic (regular) medicine is effective, but it’s limited. It only treats diseases. Homeopathic medicine is different. While it also treats diseases, its primary focus is on balance. Homeopaths believe that the reason the body becomes diseased in the first place is because it is out of balance. The difference between the two approaches becomes very apparent in how homeopathic doctors prescribe thyroid hormones.
All of the other hormones in our body can’t perform their functions unless the thyroid hormones are present & accounted for.
Thyroid Hormones Are Important
Thyroid hormones are considered the master hormones. This is because all of the other hormones - the adrenal hormones, sex hormones, immune hormones, and growth hormones - can’t perform their functions unless the thyroid hormones are present and accounted for. They are also the most critical anti-aging hormones. Animal studies show that those with the best thyroid function live 46% longer than those with the lowest levels. Better yet, the ones with the most optimal thyroid function are much more active as they grow older and have a much lower risk of developing disease. No one really knows exactly why thyroid decline is so common. Certainly it is an effect of aging. It is also caused by genetics and by a number of very common environmental exposures including excess fluoride from supplements, toothpaste, and water fluoridation; diets deficient in selenium and zinc; excess
Allopathic medicine prescribes thyroid hormones only when a disease of the thyroid is present. This could be due to a surgical removal of the thyroid, an infection of the thyroid, or an inflammatory condition called thyroiditis. These diseases always cause an abnormality in the thyroid blood tests, and are easily diagnosed. Like allopaths, homeopaths prescribe thyroid hormones when thyroid disease is present. But unlike allopaths, we also prescribe thyroid hormones for an imbalance in thyroid function, even when no disease is present. We find that there are many people with thyroid hormone blood levels in the normal range, who nevertheless have less than optimal thyroid function. Thus unlike our allopathic colleagues, we often prescribe thyroid hormones even when the thyroid blood tests are normal.
Diagnosing Hormonal Deficiencies
Diagnosing whether or not a hormonal deficiency is present is not just simply a matter of looking at blood levels. There are three criteria that should be used:

1. The most important criteria is the
symptom pattern. Certain symptoms indicate a thyroid hormone deficiency. The most common ones are dry skin, water retention, fatigue, depression, menstrual problems, weight problems, and high cholesterol.
2. Abnormal laboratory tests, particu-
larly an abnormally low basal metabolic rate, can reveal a thyroid hormone deficiency.
3. A clinical trial is the best way to diagnose any deficiency. This means prescribing the hormone, and seeing if the symptoms and/or lab tests improve. If they do, then a deficiency is confirmed.
The Problem with Blood Tests
There are two thyroid hormones: T3 and T4. These can be measured in the blood stream. The usual range for T4 found in the general public is from 0.81.5 ng/dl_. For T3 it is 1.4-4.4 pg/ml. So you can see that there is a full two to three-fold difference in the amount of these hormones in the so-called “normal range”. If the amount of hormone that your body requires is in the upper range, but you have blood levels in the lower range, you will still be diagnosed as having normal levels. Normal, yes, but optimal, no. This is one reason why these tests should not be completely relied upon to diagnose hypothyroidism. There is another hormone called TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) that is often also measured. TSH is not a thyroid hormone, it is a pituitary hormone. And because of this, TSH levels are a very poor indicator of actual thyroid function. Many studies have shown that people
with documented hypothyroidism have normal TSH levels as often as 15% of the time. So if measuring T3, T4, and TSH blood levels cannot be totally relied upon, what can? The most sensitive and accurate way to diagnose hypothyroidism is the basal metabolic rate (BMR). This is the standard that was developed more than fifty years ago, and it still stands the test of time. BMR cannot be determined with blood testing. Instead, it can be measured using Bio-Energy Testing. You can find a description of Bio-Energy Testing in any of my books, or at www.bioenergytesting.com. The BMR is a direct function of thyroid hormone activity. Therefore, a decrease in the BMR is a very strong indicator of thyroid hormone deficiency – even when the blood tests are in the normal range. In fact, according to the results in a 2005 study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the BMR is a much more reliable indicator of thyroid hormone deficiency than blood testing. 178 people both old and young had their BMR measured along with their thyroid
MIND
OVER
hormone blood levels. These researchers found that the levels of thyroid hormones did not reflect the BMR in the majority of these people. This study emphasizes that if blood tests were the only method used to diagnose a thyroid deficiency, most people with the condition would be missed. Since most doctors in the U.S. rely entirely on blood tests for the diagnosis, this makes it the most commonly missed diagnosis in medicine. Until next time, remember that one of the most incredible mysteries of life is that your body was designed to heal itself. All you have to do is to help it! The Hundred Year Lie How Food And Medicine Are Destroying Your Health By Randall Fitzgerald Reviewed by June Milligan, M.Ed., CHt
I
n this book, former Wall Street Journal investigative journalist Randall Fitzgerald provides a comprehensive look at the synthetic chemicals used by the processed foods, pharmaceutical and chemical industries. This is an excellent summary of what is currently in our food, water, vitamins, prescription drugs, childhood vaccines and cosmetics. Fitzgerald quotes a range of articles, from science journals and government reports, to interviews with scientists and environmentalists. He shows how synthetic chemicals – from artificial sweeteners to antidepressants, are endangering our health, and he gives suggestions as to what to personally do about it. Human beings are fast becoming one of the most polluted species on the planet. The average American now carries a “body burden” of 700 or more synthetic chemicals, including Teflon residues, plastics av eand l dozens of pesticides.
Beyo

medicines, but that agency has become the lackey of the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The FDA accepts the pharmaceutical companies’ “tests” done on new drugs but do very few tests of their own – until people begin to sicken and die.
Four common food additives – MSG, aspartame and two coloring chemicals – interact together to produce nerve damage, but foods containing these additives are marketed to children across the U.S. This is happening in a country where 15% of the economy is devoted to medical care. Yet the US ranks 46th in life expectancy and 42nd in infant mortality among all nations of the world. Even the American Medical Association has had to admit that our own medical system is ranked as the third cause of death in this country, behind only heart disease and cancer.
So over the past one hundred years, since the Pure Food & Drug Act was passed, humans have been guinea pigs in a vast and complicated chemistry experiment of which no one is in charge…. except maybe the wealthy pharmaceutical, processed food and chemical companies and their army of lobbyists in Washington.

Here are some things you should know right now: • When you read “made with natural flavors” on a food label, you are probably being deceived, because natural flavors and artificial flavors usually contain the same synthetic chemicals. • In large feedlots, 100% of the cattle are fed five or more sex hormones, such as progesterone and testosterone, to accelerate weight gain, and these hormones are known to cause reproductive dysfunction and cancers in humans. In the last few decades, the average sperm count has dropped 50% in American men. • Many of our commercial dairy and meat products come from animals that consume livestock feed made from the remains of tens of millions of dogs and cats that were killed with euthanasia drugs at animal shelters and veterinary clinics all over America. • Medical evidence is emerging that suggests: the artificial sweeteners in diet soft drinks may cause brain tumors and
neurological diseases, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The occurrence of these diseases has risen dramatically in proportion with the expanded use of those synthetic sweeteners. • At least 70 percent of the processed foods in your local grocery store contain at least one genetically engineered ingredient that has never been tested for its potential harm. • More than three thousand synthetic chemicals are regularly added to U.S. food products, and hardly any have been tested for their synergistic (interactive) toxin-producing effects in the human body.
are being compromised by inadequate nutrition, overuse of antibiotics, and the chemical toxins our bodies absorb and store. We pass those immune systemweakening traits on to our offspring while they are still in the womb. And while we pretend that everything is normal, our toxic chemical legacy is producing ever-greater numbers of genetic defects in our species and in the animal life that surrounds us. “Chemicals have replaced bacteria and viruses as the main threat to human health….the diseases we’re beginning to see as the major causes of death in the latter part of the last century and into the 21st century are diseases of chemical origin.” – Rick Irvin, a toxicologist at Texas A&M University

5 Steps to Sharpen Mental Function A
s with sports, having a good memory is a matter of conditioning, commitment, and positive thinking. When you realize that you create the notions that your mental faculties decrease and you grow less effective as you age, then you have the power to change that idea. Once you’ve accepted that, you can keep your brain in top shape as you age by taking the following steps:
1. Remember: forgetting is no big deal Because the language you use has been proven to become your reality, choose positive self-talk. You can convince yourself that anything is possible just as eas-

ily as you can talk yourself into believing that something is impossible when it’s really not. Don’t use language that makes a catastrophe of something that’s really not a big deal. When you lose your keys for five minutes, for example, don’t tell yourself, “Oh my God! I obviously have Alzheimer’s!” when really you just lost your keys, a meaningless and common phenomenon you’d not have thought twice about a few years before.
2. Maintain a positive attitude… within reason
Zig Ziglar has famously said that a positive attitude will not help you do anything that you want to do. A positive attitude will not magically transform the talentless into superstars, nor will it make basketball great Shaquille O’Neal into a good horse jockey. But a positive attitude will help you do everything better than a negative attitude will.
3. Make little changes for a big difference
Remove the words “forget” and “forgot” from your vocabulary. Instead of saying, “I forgot her name,” try saying, “I can’t recall her name right now.” It may sound like a silly little change, but you’re actually re-training your brain. When you say, “I forgot,” your brain processes, “Oh, I’m old and getting stupider by the second.” But when you say, “I can’t recall,” you cut yourself and your brain some slack, making it much easier to recall the information later. This perception change will have an immediate effect on your ability to recall the information you’re seeking.
4. Manage your stress in the moment Stress is the number one killer of your recall. If you can’t immediately remember something, don’t freak out. Just take
a deep breath and think positively that eventually you will remember. Tell yourself, “I know this. It will come to me.”
5. Exercise your brain and body Research shows that a combination of mental and physical activities can protect your memory and help keep you alert. Overall physical health will translate into overall mental health, better memory, and sharper mental faculties all around. Exercise maintains heart health and opens blood vessels; in turn, brain cells get the nutrients that ensure peak performance. Exercise your brain, too, by doing crossword puzzles, solving brain teasers or playing Sudoku. Mental games and exercises have been proven to have a definite effect on mental agility as people age. Reading good, challenging books that make you think is also an essential mental exercise to stay sharp. Also get sufficient sleep and take a vacation every once in awhile. 2 1/2 cups sprouted soft wheat berries or kamut grain (2 cups dry) 10 pitted medjool dates 1/2 c walnuts 1 t cinnamon 1 t sea salt water as needed to blend into firm dough
1 c fruit of choice 1/4 c dates (pitted) water as needed for proper consistency Mix all ingredients in a blender until it is the desired consistency. Chill and serve on scones.
Process the sprouted wheat berries in a food processor or champion juicer with the blank on. If using the food processor, grind the grain first until it is coarsely ground, then add the other ingredients and process until it is mostly smooth but not quite. Form into scones and dry on a mesh screen in the dehydrator at 105 until is the consistency of a dense moist bread approx 16-20 hours. Serve with coconut butter and jam. To sprout wheat berries: soak overnight in about 6 cups water. Drain and rinse then place in a colander and create a well in the center of the berries by pulling them up the sides of the colander. Cover with a clean towel and allow them to sprout for 12-24 hours. Berries are usable as soon as they show a small bud – do not allow them to sprout long tails as they will become bitter.
Coconut Butter: 1 C coconut oil 1/2 c agave nectar 1/2 t turmeric 1/2 t sea salt
Melt the coconut butter by placing it in a container in the dehydrator. When it becomes liquid add the remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour the mixture in a shallow container so that it will form the thickness of butter patties and put it in the fridge until it is hard. Cut or break it into pieces to serve.

How a Parent’s Thoughts Shape Their Unborn Child’s Life W
e often hear the first 3 years of a child’s life are the most important. So for the first 3 years with our children, we play the right games, buy the right toys and read the right books. Recent studies prove that 6 months into a pregnancy, the fetus is already aware, reacting and emotionally active. At 6 months, the unborn child can see, hear, experience, taste, feel and even learn. So a child’s physical and emotional health is being shaped before it’s even born and part of that shaping is determined by how the parents – especially the mother – feel about life and each other.
Creating a child’s personality On some level, what the pregnant mother feels emotionally is transferred directly to her unborn child. Because of this, constant negative emotions can have a damaging affect on the fetus. The fetus absorbs negative emotions like anger, stress or frustration. Feelings most adults experience throughout their stressful days. However, the most harm is done when a mother doesn’t want the child. These and other negative emotions shape the baby’s personality.
Then there’s the father… Throughout the pregnancy, the fetus is also affected by the father’s feelings toward the mother and their child. That’s because the fetus can absorb its parents’ emotional energy. This energy helps create how the child will see itself in its life ahead. For example, it will feel happy or sad, be aggressive or meek, secure or insecure. And some studies show parents begin affecting their child’s personality soon after conception.
What messages do you send your baby? Research shows soon after conception, a level of consciousness exists in the embryo. As the fetus develops, its subconscious stores information to prepare it for its mother’s environment. But, the father’s role in relation to the mother is also important. By the sixth month, the fetus can hear and move in rhythm to its mother’s voice. Imagine the different influence this has if the mother is happily singing or yelling in anger.
34
www.HBMag.com
It’s no surprise that sonograms taken while parents yell at each other show the baby’s entire body flinching in agitation. Imagine the damage caused by months of feeding this negative energy to a fetus. Frightening, isn’t it? In fact, studies show a bad relationship between parents increases the child’s risk of psychological and physical damage by a startling 200% or more!
How your subconscious thoughts affect your fetus Another powerful way parents affect their fetus is through their beliefs. I’ll explain. Your life is a reflection of your beliefs. These beliefs come from a lifetime of experiences and interactions with other people. Most of these beliefs are subconscious. And they quietly “program” your mind to react to your world. If these beliefs are negative, it programs our minds to be self-defeating. We see it everyday in people who say, “I can’t___”, “I’m not good enough to ___, “I am so unlucky” and so on. As expectant parents, the negative programming usually comes out in fear: …“Am I going to make the same mistakes my parents made?” …“Will my baby be healthy and deliver naturally?” …“Can I adequately provide for my child?” Single mothers often have additional negative emotions like: …“Will I be enough not having a father around?” …“Can I really raise my child alone?” During the pregnancy, parents who dwell on negative thoughts send these feelings to the fetus. In turn, this programs fear into the child before it even enters the world. It is extremely important for both mother and father to understand their emotions and deal with them in an effective manner. Continued stress for the mother takes its toll on her unborn child. Whether the mother’s thoughts and emotions are positive and reinforcing or negative and rejecting they are helping to define and shape the child’s character.
Supporting your desire for a healthy child
If you’d like to learn more about a child’s emotional development in utero, I recommend “The Secret Life of the Unborn Child” by Thomas Verny, M.D.
No matter what the situation, any parent can give their child a strong, healthy start. It begins with their choices made during the pregnancy.

The physical and emotional health of a fetus is shaped by the parents’ environment and their emotional well-being. That’s why it’s vital to feed loving, positive energy to the fetus throughout the pregnancy. Doing so helps ensure a happy, healthy, confident child.

Additives...
Food and Cosmetics. Are you allergic? By Erina Fischer
S
o you eat more whole grains, avoid sugar and eat more fresh vegetables and fruit? Your diet may be nutritious, but are you aware of what other things you may be putting into your body besides nutrients? Take a moment to look at the ingredients on any of the packaged foods you may have in your refrigerator, cupboard or even on the back of the skim milk carton. Do you even know how to pronounce some of those lengthy words, let alone know what they are? They are food additives… some are safe, some are not and some are still up in the air, but many are unavoidable. Ruth Winter, author of “A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives” educates the consumer on what chemicals or natural additives they’re ingesting and what all of those strange names really mean. The safety of food additives has to meet Congress’s Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) list, the keyword being “generally”. The GRAS list uses five levels to classify safety. Many critics argue that safety tests are not done over a long enough period of time to assess the real risk of cancer. Consider that it can take up to 20 years for cancer to appear in humans and

up to two years in rats, but 70-90% of laboratory rats, due to living conditions, do not even live to fulfill their total lifespan. Even though many additives are safe for consumption, some people, especially children, can have severe food additive allergies that might not be easily diagnosed. Some common symptoms of food allergies can include itchy skin or mouth, hives, asthma and in rare cases, anaphylaxis. Your mission: Open up your cupboard and read the ingredient labels on your packaged foods that you consider “healthy” for your family. Consider Kellogg’s Nutrigrain Bars®, which are a popular snack food. Besides containing infamous high fructose corn syrup, which is now thought to increase appetite as well as being linked to the diabetes epidemic, one of the ingredients listed is propylene glycol, common in baked goods, beverages and beauty products. It is used as an emulsifier in ice cream and as a wetting agent in foundation and lipsticks. Propylene glycol is recognized as safe according to GRAS, but in large oral doses has been found to cause central nervous system depression in lab mice. Another common ingredient used in baked goods as a yeast food and dough conditioner, ammonium sulfate, can be found in Kellogg’s® snack bars. This colorless powder is also used for the fire-proofing in car upholstery and to increase the duration of painkillers. There is no toxicity known in small doses, but large doses in lab rats have proven to be deadly. Another commonly-used yeast food, calcium sulfate, is also used in Plaster of Paris, an abrasive agent in toothpaste and as a moisture-absorber in cement and pesticides. Ingesting large amounts of pure calcium sulfate may lead to intestinal blockages and has also been found to be deadly to lab rats. What about rice cakes as a standard dieter’s snack food? Quaker Cheddar Cheese Rice Snacks® contain monosodium glutamate, more commonly known as MSG. MSG, used to increase flavor intensity, is on the FDA’s list for further research. Symptoms of sensitivity can include a rubber-band sensation-type headache as well as chest pain, mood disorders or numbness. Brain damage was reported in young laboratory animals, including monkeys. Reproductive complications, such as infertility was also noted in laboratory mice.
Food colorings, common in packaged processed foods, especially fruit snacks, are a considerable object of concern with regards to food allergies and overall toxicity. Red No. 40, or Allura Red AC, which replaced Red No. 4 after being shown to cause cancer, is of concern to scientists due to its safety testing only being performed by the manufacturer. According to Winter, the National Cancer Institute has shown that Red No. 40 is carcinogenic in animals. The coloring Blue No. 1, also known as Brilliant Blue, has been shown to cause allergic reactions and led to cancer in rats. Ever wonder what “Blue No. 1 Lake” means? The term “lake” refers to the use of alumina hydrate to prevent the release of dye on to the hands or clothing when in contact with moisture. One “natural” food coloring that is known to cause mild to severe allergic reactions in children and adults is cochineal extract, sometimes called carmine. Cochineal extract is derived from the female cochineal bug to add red, pink, orange or purple color to products. The extract does not have to be labeled on a product due to being an animal by-product and therefore is considered to be natural. It sometimes may be referred to as “artificial flavoring” or “artificial coloring”. Cochineal extract is considered to be safe for consumption, but should be included when trying to identify food allergies because it has been linked to hives and anaphylactic shock. Sensitivity to additives is not only attributable to ingestion, but skin allergies can be caused by the numerous additives in beauty products. Aveeno® body lotion, like many over-thecounter moisturizers, contains petrolatum (mineral oil). Derived from petroleum, this odorless jelly-like substance traps moisture and creates a protective barrier, but can cause allergic reactions in people with sensitive skin. Petrolatum is also used as a wax seal for fruits, vegetables and a glaze for baked goods. In addition to petrolatum, Aveeno® lotion’s ingredients includes benzyl alcohol, an alcohol derived from plants, but can be irritating to the skin or mucous membranes in large amounts. Isopropyl alcohol is used in many lotions and cosmetics, as well as antifreeze. Isopropanol, another name for isopropyl alcohol is the ingredient in antifreeze that when ingested can lead to headache, nausea, coma and may be fatal. Yet according to the GRAS, there are no known adverse skin reactions to the substance! Adding chemicals to food is not exclusive to modern society. Historically, food additives have been used for thousands of years ago when man discovered that salt would preserve meat after the hunt. Later the vitamin C found in limes, as well as salt, continued to be useful for food preservation on a long ship voyage. Using additives to preserve and protect food saves us from many food-borne illnesses, not to mention time, but remember to be aware of possible allergic reactions, especially in children. Fresh, unprocessed food is always ideal, but when you must settle for the packaged variety it is up to you to educate yourself on what types of additives you are ingesting on a regular basis so that you, the consumer, may be able to make an informed choice. QUICK!! RELAX!!!
I
n a world where the act of relaxing is postponed, till we are …relaxed, finding time in our hectic day to sneak in much needed meditation or even just downtime can be downright stressful and easily forgotten. Good news: Studies show that even a few minutes a day of resting our brains can increase focus and relieve our chronic stress state. 1. When in the car: turn off your cell phone for a few minutes and listen to music that you enjoy. But make sure to turn off that phone! People can wait for five minutes, considering you are probably on your way now. 2. Notice your breath: The daily breaths we take are part of our subconscious action, but even noticing for a few moments how we are breathing can have dramatic relaxation benefits. When on hold or sitting at a stop light, count your breath. Inhale for 6 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 8. 3. At your desk: Take a minute to focus on one photo or place on the wall, preferably away from your computer monitor and don’t move your eyes for one whole minute. This short activity will increase our ability to focus over time.
