COVERSTORY
Carrots
Dear Readers,
Written by Sara Piccola
C
arrots were originally cultivated in Central Asian and Middle Asian countries. Taking on the colors lavender to dark purple, this was a reflection of the anthocyanin phytonutrient pigments. Today we get the orange carrot from a yellow-rooted carrot that first appeared in Afghanistan. The Greeks and Romans adopted both types of carrots for medicinal use. Carrots are the richest source of pro-vitamin A carotenes. Carrot’s antioxidant compounds help prevent against cardiovascular disease, cancer and enhance vision. Foods that are high in carotenoids are thought to be beneficial for blood sugar regulation as well. Carrots also contain a phytonutrient called falcarinol, which may reduced the risk of cancer among carrot eaters. It is believed vitamin A rich foods may increase lung health. A surprising discovery was made that a common carcinogen in cigarette smoke, benzo(a)pyrene, induces vitamin A deficiency. Vitamin A’s protective effects could explain why some smokers do not develop emphysema, if their diet is rich with carrots. Carrots are a great snack for adults and kids and a colorful addition to daily meals.

Happy Spring, Happy Easter to each reader from the Healthy Beginnings Magazine team; just like a small bud on a tree branch just waiting to bloom, the month of April prepares our biology for the warmer days ahead. I do not know about you, but I am ready for my mountain hikes, lounging by the lake and those sweet Sunday drives through the Sierras where I can revel at their majestic beauty. Like anything, a quality life takes thought and attention to detail. In the April issue you will find articles on detoxification, managing depression naturally, liver health, weight loss and how to buy seedlings. It is not easy being healthy all the time; it is a constant work in progress. Healthy Beginnings got its name from this concept - just begin again if you get off track and don’t beat yourself up. Life is too short and we need to stay awake for it. Spring is here, let’s begin again! Best in health and happiness, Dawn Gowery Publisher/Editor Healthy Beginnings Magazine

BRAINHEALTH
BR AIN FOG The Power of Chelation Therapy Written by Michael Gerber, MD, HMD
L
ast month I gave some of the history of EDTA chelation therapy, an FDA approved therapy for removing lead and other heavy metals. It has been administered to an estimated one million people in the last 50 years with an 86 percent positive success rate in helping cardiovascular diseases. EDTA chelation is most powerfully administered intravenously in a one and a half to two hour sessions while the patient sits comfortably in an easy chair and can watch TV, read or sleep. It is usually given weekly for 10 to 30 sessions depending on the needs of the patient. In these long chelations, di sodium-magnesium EDTA is used in conjunction with vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids, liquid aspirin (also a chelating agent) and heparin (to take the blood to all the body’s nooks and crannies) in the IV bag. Short chelations can be done in five to ten minutes with calcium EDTA only as an IV push. Some patients note changes after the first chelation and older, sicker patients usually begin noticing changes after four to six IVs. Before beginning chelation therapy, patients must have a physical exam and lab work to make sure their kidneys and liver are functioning properly and that they are not in congestive heart failure. Checking the hair analysis, red blood cell metals and metals challenge testing is important to establish a base line of heavy metal toxicity and helpful trace mineral sufficiency. Homeopathic doctors also check their patients energetically with EAV (Electro Acupuncture by Vol), a German testing procedure developed

in the 1940s to be sure the treatment works smoothly for the patient. Besides IV EDTA it can also be administered effectively orally as a capsule usually in a daily multi vitamin such as Beyond Chelation Improved. It is also available in a liquid phosphatidylcholine matrix, 1000 bubbles within bubbles, for greater bioavailability and absorption. Almost as effective as IV chelation is EDTA delivered by rectal suppositories that are available online. Besides medicinal uses EDTA is a food additive that is generally recognized as safe (GRAS). EDTA’s array of biochemical properties make it extremely valuable as a food additive and it is in practically everything. It has the ability to: bind with many metals; act synergistically with other antioxidants to stabilize fats and oils; prevent discoloration of potato products; stabilize vitamins; prevent discoloration of fish and shellfish; prevent flavor changes in milk; inhibit the thickening of stored condensed milk; enhance the foaming properties of reconstituted skim milk; prevent color changes of scrambled eggs prepared from egg powder; preserve canned legumes; prevent gushing in beer; promote flavor retention and delay loss of carbonation in soft drinks; prevent oxidation of meat products; and prevent discoloration of canned fruits and vegetables. Next month, more on the other chelating agents that are better mercury removers. References: 1. Aamoth, H.L. & Butt, F.J. Maintaining food quality with chelating agents. PROVIDERPROFILE
Virginia Parsons
MS, CCHT, CTLC, NC Written by Sara Piccola
V
irginia Parsons has lived her life doing everything as natural as possible. Growing up on an organic beef farm outside of Chicago, she was part of the “green movement” before it was even a movement. She has been practicing life enhancement services for over 25 years and has an impressive list of credentials to support it. Virginia holds a Masters Degree in Adult Health Education, is a certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, and is currently a PhD candidate. She has extensive training in behavioral modification, Neuro-linguistic programming and goal achievement techniques. To add to her qualifications, Virginia is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine and The Cooper Institute for Aerobic Research as a Health/ Fitness Specialist and Lifestyle Coach. In many years teaching in Corporate Wellness Centers, Virginia realized that people have great intentions and goals of being healthy, but often life gets in the way. During this time she learned about hypnosis as another tool that can be used toward achieving one’s goals. After intensely studying hypnotherapy, Virginia immediately saw the results working on clients and her own family. The main approach Virginia uses is
hypnocoaching. This is a mix of hypnotherapy and life coaching. Through hypnotherapy Virginia is able to take the client to a state of trance where many things can be accomplished and solutions discovered. She then works with the client outside of the trance to determine how they’re going to take action towards those solutions. Clients are changed and healed on a subconscious level then guided on how to take action and stay focused on their goals. Virginia’s biggest thrust with hypnocoaching is weight loss. Through hypnocoaching a client is better able to understand their relationship to food, to themselves and their eating habits. Virginia mixes hypnocoaching with weight management and lifestyle programs that have proven to be more effective than weight management alone. Another tool that assists in this process includes DNA analysis kits. Through DNA analysis, you are able to learn such things as predispositions you may have for certain conditions, what is best to eat, as well as supplements to help metabolize your body fat. Ultimately, this is a customized formulation for your body. The Seven Keys to Self-Actualization unlocks the power of your mind to achieve your Life’s Purpose and deepest desires in all areas of your life. It starts with a Life Guidance Discovery Session and provides the client with a road map of action steps and coaching to help you

realize your goals in the Seven Key areas of your life. The Seven Keys to Self-Actualization encourages self-discovery, helps you develop new life skills and facilitate problem solving. For more than 25 years, life enhancement has been Virginia’s passion. She cares about her clients and seeing positive results. No one leaves her office without a hug. She believes that people posses the power to change their lives, she is simply on your team and wants to see you succeed – together great things are accomplished. By the time a client is finished with Virginia they know they don’t need her anymore and feel confident on their own. They are able to take the tools and apply them to their life on an ongoing basis. When first beginning hypnocoaching Virginia was surprised with how quickly she saw change when a person was ready. She realized early on you couldn’t make anyone do anything they don’t want to. She requires a minimum of four sessions for a client and this number differs depending on each individual’s needs. She always says to her clients, “pay attention to your thoughts and the words you utter, for every thought there is a central nervous system physiological response.” Outside of work, Virginia loves hiking, golfing and taking walks. She has been doing yoga for over 20 years and loves to spend time with her family, simply enjoying life. Go to ad on page 27.

What’s On The Label & What’s Not
LIP BALM Written by Brittany Russell
A
s much as it is needed in the winter, it seems our application of lip moisturizers and balms only increases as the season begins to warm. It is easy to forget that the ingredients we put on our body are just as important to be familiar with as the ingredients we put in our body. With that in mind, lets compare two common lip balms on the market:
In Organic Lip Balm, such as Beeswax Lip Balm • Coconut Oil – A highly healthful ingredient.
Because of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, its properties include antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal and antibacterial.
In Unnatural Lip Balms, such as Carmex • Octinoxate – Typically, this is a chemical
• Beeswax – A complex blend of lipids and hydrocarbons, beeswax is non-water saluable, so the balm will last longer on your lips.
sunscreen ingredient. It may block UVB rays, but it is unknown if it blocks UVA rays.
• Extra Virgin Olive Oil – A common cooking
• Oxybenzone – Also known as Benzophe-
element, EVOO proves to be super beneficial not only for skin and lips, but for hair and nails too as a moisturizer.
none-3, has been linked to allergies, hormone disruption and cell damage.
• Petrolatum – This ingredient, Petroleum Jelly, creates a sealing effect on cuts making it seem like a perfect solution for chapped skin and lips. Beware though, it is often contaminated with impurities linked to cancer and various health concerns.
• Vitamin E – Many quality skin care products
contain vitamin E because of its antioxidant properties, as well as anti-aging benefits, sun protection and sun burn treatment, scar minimizing, and treatment of skin diseases and cancers.
• Lanolin – This ingredient is a natural skin soother
• Menthol – Obtained synthetically or from
found in a secretion in the wool of wool-bearing animals. Chemically similar to wax, it is common in skin ointment and waterproof wax.
mint oils, this is a waxy, crystalline substance. Menthol may cause skin reactions or irritate the skin – make yourself aware of any possible allergies.
• Comfrey Leaf Oil – The oil is extracted from the perennial herb indigenous to Europe. It has been used to stop bleeding, heal wounds, even mend broken bones.
• Salicylic Acid – A skin irritant, this ingredient may actually encourage repeated use, making the user possible addicted to the lip balm.
• Rosemary Extract – A well-known culinary herb, when applied as an oil to the skin, rosemary helps strengthen the capillaries and has a rejuvenating effect. For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

The Amazing Liver & Gallbladder Flush A Powerful Do-It-Yourself Tool To Optimize Your Health and Wellbeing By Andreas Moritz Book Review by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt
F
or me, the most startling information in this book was the size and number of stones that could be blocking your liver ducts without your knowledge. I was amazed that hundreds of stones consisting of congealed clumps of bile or organic matter are practically “invisible” to x-rays, ultrasonic technologies and computerized tomography. While diagnostic tests can detect these hardened stones in the gallbladder, they tend to miss the softer noncalcified stones in the liver. Only when excessive amounts of these stones block the bile ducts of the liver may an ultrasound reveal a condition that is called “fatty liver.” That test may show that thousands of stones have accumulated there. But even if “fatty liver” was diagnosed in the early stages, today’s medical facilities offer no treatments to relieve this vital organ of its heavy burden. So what causes these stones? Overeating is probably the biggest culprit, and eating between meals (eating again before the previous meal has been digested), eating heavy meals in the evening, eating highly processed food, overeating proteins, ingesting refined salt, not drinking enough water, as well as taking certain pharmaceutical drugs. What is bile and what does it do? Liver bile is a bitter, alkaline fluid of a yellow, brown or green color. It has many functions and each one of these profoundly influences the health of every organ and system in the body. In order to mainFor past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com
tain a strong and healthy digestive system and feed body cells the right amount of nutrients, the liver has to produce one to one-and-a-half quarts of bile per day. Anything less than that will cause problems with the digestion of food, elimination of waste and detoxification of the blood. When the liver produces the amount of bile that is necessary for vital body functions but the bile cannot leave the liver because of stones obstructing the bile ducts, sometimes only a cup of bile is produced per day. Among other problems that cause food to be improperly digested and to putrefy in the body, is the production of toxins. After over thirty years of study regarding this subject, the author believes that almost all health problems are a direct or indirect consequence of reduced bile flow. The book contains numerous testimonials from people all over the world who have done this liver and gallbladder flush. They describe painlessly passing stones as large as a golf ball. One person described doing eight liver flushes over a period of time, and releasing over 2,500 stones. Her former symptoms of headaches, stomach ulcers and sinusitis are “gone without a trace.” Andreas Moritz describes how his patients have become free of backache, allergies, acne, food cravings, skin problems, distended belly as well as about fifty other ailments and conditions through the liver and gallbladder flush. There are other books recommending a liver and gallbladder flush, but this one is particularly well written and easy to read. It also offers the background information on exactly why we need the fluids our bodies produce, and how our 100 trillion cells, through their astounding harmony and complexity, are designed to work together to keep us healthy if we will do our part. This flush is easy and inexpensive. We are fortunate to have this information, as a series of liver and gallbladder flushes could actually save us from gallbladder surgery later in life as well as relieve many other symptoms we may be experiencing right now. To quote Andreas Moritz, “Once you see hundreds of green, beige-colored, brown or black gallstones floating in the toilet bowl during your first liver flush, you will intuitively know that you are on to something extremely important in your life.” For more info contact June Milligan, specializing in personal empowerment, at (775) 786-9111. A Healthy Liver
is Key to Graceful Aging PART 1
W
hen people want to slow down the aging process maintaining a healthy liver is not something they think about. Usually the heart, skin and brain come to mind first. It may come up in the news when someone famous, like Walter Payton dies of liver disease.
Respect Your Liver – Your liver is critical to how well
you age. It is an amazing organ. Located in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, the liver is the largest and most complex organ of the body. It is responsible for: • Cleansing and filtering the blood stream. • The production of bile, which is stored in the gallbladder. When released, bile aids in the digestion of fats while helping to rid the body of harmful substances. • Producing other important chemical compounds such as albumin, blood clotting factors, cholesterol and vitamin E. • Converting amino acids and lipids into glucose, a simple sugar. This requires a complex process catalyzed by a series of enzymes. • Storing glucose in the form of glycogen, playing a critical role in maintaining normal blood sugar levels. • Proper metabolism of proteins and fats. • Metabolizing many medications, alcohol, and other ingested chemicals such as caffeine. • The storage of vitamins A, B12, D, several of the other B vitamins, and minerals like copper and iron. • Detoxifying the body from numerous substances like ammonia and metabolic wastes. Over 500 chemical and metabolic functions take place in a healthy liver. It filters about 2 quarts of blood per minute making it the “garbage disposal” of the body. A healthy liver is involved in diet, metabolism, blood sugar control, digestion, detoxification and elimination. It is critically important to understand how the liver works and what you can do to support the liver properly. Your overall health and wellness, as well as how you age and fight disease, will be impacted by a healthy liver.
In Our Overly Medicated and Chemical World! We live in an environment that has seen an increased use of chemicals and medication to process foods and treat symptoms. It is estimated that 80 percent of U.S. livestock and April 2009

poultry receive some form of drugs/hormones/antibiotics during their lifetime. Pesticides, herbicides and other chemical storage methods are commonly used in food production. Add environmental toxins, chemical additives, certain processing and refining practices, coupled with substance abuse and you can see why today’s liver is under so much stress. Additionally, the typical American diet creates an acidic environment. This acidic environment stresses a healthy liver, as well as other systems in the body. Is it any wonder why we are seeing so many people living lives compromised by degenerative diseases? Part 2 will be continued in the May issue.... Greening
THE WORKPLACE Written by Kimberly A. Phipps-Nichol
T
he previous five issues were devoted to measures one can take to green a home or lifestyle, and here are some final tips for Greening the Workplace. Most people spend as many hours at work as they do at home, so the workplace is an incredibly important topic. To be “In the Green” in more ways than one, consider the steps below:
1.
Turn off computers & printers. Even in sleep mode, they eat electricity. While it may be a small, latent amount, it is still consumption. A good rule of thumb: If you’ll be away from the computer for more than ½ hour, turn it off. Costs nothing and saves money, period.
2.
Purchase post-consumer recycled content papers that do not use chlorine bleaches. After printing, return ink and toner cartridges to office supply stores or refill stores for reuse and recycling.
3.
Print on both sides of each sheet of paper, and print only what is absolutely necessary. Scan and save documents rather than copying whenever feasible and legal. Send electronic invoices rather than print.
4.
Install a water filter system at the kitchen faucet tap and provide employees with reusable cups and glasses. Avoid plastic bottled water – this is not
only an environmental issue, plastic water bottles are now a health concern due to leaching of compounds.
5.
Initiate a “green team” with various colleagues at work that support recycling, resource conservation and reuse ideals. The team can help remind co-workers and bosses of why these steps are important and ensure that the goals are not compromised.
6.
Start car-pooling with coworkers, and ask if your employer offers public transportation or carpooling benefits. Many employers are eligible for tax breaks for providing public transportation and carpooling benefits. It also saves money on gas.
7.
Recycle all acceptable containers and paper materials. Make sure there are not only bins in the break room, but that each workstation has a paperrecycling bin.
8.
Eliminate “disposables” from office purchases. It saves money and reduces waste. Ask your office manager to consider providing new hires with a refillable pen and pencil set and a company logo thermal mug for their daily coffee.

When it’s time to replace the office equipment, purchase or lease Energy Star equipment. In an office environment, approved equipment can save hundreds to thousands of dollars in energy costs. www.energystar.gov

If your office is moving or remodeling, be sure to hire a licensed design professional that has documented experience in healthy, highperformance, environmentally responsible projects. The health and welfare of occupants should be their #1 goal.

Pain Relief Written by Sara Piccola
W
hen it comes to painkillers you never know what you may or may not be putting in or on your body. With any form of prescribed medication there may be an underlying chemical or substance that ends up causing more pain than eliminating it. Try some of these natural pain remedies.
Olive Oil Yes, another fantastic use for this tasty cooking oil! It contains an antiinflammatory ingredient that is similar to the ones found in painkillers - oleocanthal. This compound was isolated when it was discovered that freshly pressed extra virgin olive oil produces a stinging sensation in the throat, similar to ibuprofen. The oleocanthal in 50 grams (1.75 ounces) of olive oil is only 10 percent of the recommended ibuprofen dosage. However, even at this level, researchers believe oleocanthal can have long term benefits.
Tea Tree Oil Tea tree oil has an endless list of benefits. One of its biggest uses is as a natural pain reliever. Tea tree oil leaves are steamed to produce light yellow oil that is mainly used in medicine. Tea tree oil can be used for sprains, arthritis, bunions, bursitis, eczema, gout, carpal tunnel syndrome and hemorrhoids. Products with essential tea tree oil versus pure essential oil are less likely to cause irritation on sensitive skin. Researchers are currently looking into the pain relieving attribute of tea tree oil and whether it actually reduces inflammation besides killing the microorganisms causing it.
Vanilla Extract
NATURALSOLUTIONS
NATURAL
Aside from being an attractive scent, new studies show that vanilla aids in pain relief. Vanilla extract can be used to relieve irritation in the gums or other minor skin irritations. The evaporation of alcohol from vanilla extract can cool a burn resulting in temporary pain relief.
Eucalyptus Oil Eucalyptus oil has been used as a pain remedy for many years. The substance has the ability to cause a positive stimulant effect on the body’s circulatory system. The result is an increased blood flow and oxygenation of bodily tissues. Eucalyptus oil is also proven to get rid of muscle spasms. People who are prone to migraines are encouraged to use eucalyptus oil because of the dual effect in pain abatement. Each of these ingredients can aid in pain relief individually. And when you combine these ingredients, they prove to be a powerful pain-relieving potion! HOW TO GROW
200 Tomatoes [From A Single Plant!] Written by Craig Witt and Mark O’Farrell, Soil Council
3) Transplant Origination – One should be aware that
many times, commercially grown transplants are sprayed with a growth-inhibiting hormone. This is done to increase the market window for a specific size of plant. The hormone is what causes the long lag time in getting many transplants to grow after they have been transplanted. The solution is to buy locally grown, organic transplants.
4) Soil Preparation – Amend your soil based on the results
N
orthern Nevada’s short growing season and cool nighttime temperatures make growing high yielding tomatoes a challenge. Consistent success can be achieved by performing a combination of gardening practices correctly. The following five practices have proven to produce outstanding results:
1) Season Extension – The Wall-O-Water is one of the
best season extenders on the market. The water-filled tubes act like an igloo protecting the plant down to 17 degrees F. You can plant tomatoes in April and establish a strong plant and root structure for 6 weeks until the frost danger is gone. Another inexpensive season extender is to create a mini greenhouse by wrapping a tomato cage with plastic wrap. Select a microclimate when locating the tomato planting area. Pick a southern exposure, which provides more heat and sunlight during our short growing season.
2) Variety – Choose an early tomato variety that matures in
less than 70 days. Buy or grow your own organic transplants to guarantee they are free of growth inhibitors. Two of the shortest season tomato varieties available are Oregon Spring and Yellow Taxi. Other tomatoes proven to be successful in this area are Early Girl, Better Boy, and Patio. One can easily achieve over 200 tomatoes per plant by planting Matt’s Wild Cherry, Sweet 100 or Sungold tomatoes. Is planting cherry tomatoes cheating?

of a soil analysis. Tomatoes are very sensitive to the amount of available Calcium in the soil. Blossom drop and blossom end-rot reduce the tomato crop and indicate a lack of available Calcium in the soil. Make sure that the amendment you use includes Calcium, especially if you are making your own compost and not adding any additional Calcium. If one continually keeps adding only compost or manure, you see excessive amounts of Potassium buildup in the soil and the balance of the nutrients is disrupted. This lowers the plant’s productivity and the nutrition contained in its fruit.
5) Mulch – A good mulch has to allow the soil to breathe and increases its’ water holding capacity. Straw, woody mulches, compost, and old hay work very well. Do not mulch the plants too early, as it is important to get the soil warm as soon as possible. Black plastic mulch can be used at the start of the season and be replaced with an organic mulch when summer arrives. 6) Plant Habitat – World record production has been
achieved with a cage trellis system. Trellising increases the plant’s ability to collect more sun by increasing its leaf surface area. Talk kindly to your tomato plants at all times. After all, they are affectionately known as love apples. References: 1. Wilber, Charles H., How to Grow World Record Tomatoes, Acres U.S.A. Metairie, Louisiana 1999 2. Hendrickson, Robert. SLEEP
A Spiritual Path Written by Dr. James Rouse, Naturopathic Doctor
P
erhaps you can relate to this: when I miss out on a good night of sleep, the next day I live, move and think from a place of scarcity rather than abundance – I’m impacted on every level, including spiritually. Millions of us are awake when we should be sleeping and resting, or falling asleep when we should be creating and shining. The research is sobering. Most cases of insomnia stem from stress, environment, nutrition, emotion, physical and even spiritual issues. Much of what keeps us from getting quality sleep are the choices that we make throughout the day. Have you ever noticed that watching the late night news while suppressing your heartache over the world politics with a tub of ice cream and balancing your checkbook does not allow for a sound night of sleep? This, after asking yourself to perform multi-tasking miracles for the precious sixteen hours, tethered to cell phones, voice and emails, then negotiating with a plastic clown to give you a balanced meal through a drive-thru window, and wondering if a coffee intravenous feed would be out of the question?! You do have other choices. You can re-create balance and once again live with the natural rhythm that is innately yours to uncover and fully realize. First, we need to be all right with the idea of being in the world and not of it. You do not have to subscribe to the all too pervasive “conspicuous consumption” model for living. In other words, we all have choices to “consume.” The media, for example (television, newspaper, radio, magazines), that we allow into our thought atmosphere can disrupt sleep and personal balance. Certain foods we eat (those with refined and empty calories) leave us unsatisfied, restless and “hungry” for more. Choose differently! We can establish an overall well being by leveraging key practices that satisfy the spirit and nourish a healthy night’s sleep.
Bookends for Balance: One way to experience greater quality of sleep is to create what I refer to as “bookends” (the beginnings and the end of the day). Bookends can help keep us mindful and centered with what truly nourishes our mind, body, spirit and sleep. Choose April 2009
17
to begin and end each day with a personal practice for balance and peace. For example, a morning meditation practice, even for just a few minutes, serves us and our “chemistry” in a variety of ways: by establishing a healthier “belly breathing” pattern, we can help support and build stress-fighting neurotransmitters (the brain’s chemical messengers to the body) that help keep us in balance and allow us to better manage our mental state and the choices we make throughout the day. When we begin the day with an attitude of “Good morning, God!” rather than “Good God, its morning!” The same is true at night. We should tend towards more love for others and ourselves. Chronic “stinkin’ thinkin” can sabotage a good night’s rest and have a negative residual that impacts other elements of our wellness.

CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY
The Healing Power of Gentle Touch Written by Cheryl Kiraly
M
ost people have not heard of CranioSacral Therapy, a light touch technique which can create dramatic improvements in your life. Particularly for those who are trying to recover from injury, CranioSacral Therapy can shorten healing time and reduce pain by releasing tensions deep in the body.
caused by sudden trauma. Stress is like a slow-motion train wreck. Your body can only handle so much prolonged stress and strain before tissues begin to tighten and potentially affect the brain and spinal cord. This can compromise the function of the central nervous system and the performance of nearly every other system in your body.
What is CranioSacral Therapy? CranioSacral Therapy deals with the flow of energy through the body. If any part of the body experiences a disruption of that energy, that part does not function properly. Since all the nerves of the body pass through the spine, and nerves carry the body’s energy impulses back and forth to the brain, it is essential to keep these nerve pathways free from injury, compression, swelling or misalignment. The term CranioSacral is referring to the area between the top of the spine, the cranium, and the bottom of the spine, the sacrum. This therapy focuses on repairing and maintaining energy flow between those two points, and thus throughout the body.
All the nerve pathways through the body are encased in sheaths of protective material. If any part of a nerve sheath is damaged or compressed, the nerve does not function properly and some part of the body suffers. In CranioSacral Therapy, the therapist identifies the area of restriction and applies gentle pressure to release any restrictions they find, allowing the entire body to relax and self-correct. This is all done while the client is fully clothed.
Let’s look at what happens after a bad fall or a car accident. Impact causes misalignments of the spine and other body parts. Chiropractic and massage can treat most of the injury with therapy directed at bones, joints and muscles. If even a small amount of the nerve trauma remains, there can be ongoing discomfort and pain. The injury seems to never fully subside. In the same way, long-term stress affects the body in ways similar to injuries

CranioSacral Therapy has been found to be effective in relieving migraines, chronic neck and back pain, stress-related disorders, spinal cord injuries, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, motor-coordination disorders, central nervous system disorders, ADD/ADHD, among others. Because it is so gentle CranioSacral Therapy can be effective for all ages, from newborns to seniors. References: 1. Upledger John E. FITNESS
How To Choose a
PERSONAL TRAINER Written by Christine Pinney Karkow, ACE & AFAA Certified Personal Trainer
Y
ou have decided to take your fitness to the next level by hiring a Personal Trainer. This decision is a powerful first step towards taking your health and fitness goals seriously. A trainer not only offers a high level of expertise and encouragement, but will also make you accountable to him/her and to you! You will no longer be able to skip workouts simply because “I don’t really feel like it today.” You will now have an appointment that you’ve paid for, motivating you to keep going. The next step is finding the right trainer for you. There are many personal trainers out there, so where do you start your search? First, defining your fitness goals is a crucial criteria in selecting a trainer. For instance, if you are a 55-year-old, very
de-conditioned person who would like to lose 10 pounds and re-gain some of the functionality that you’ve lost over the years, a trainer who specializes in training body-builders for competition probably wouldn’t be a good choice for you. You would be much better off working with a trainer who specializes in training older adults with an emphasis in functional training. How do you find out which trainer has certain qualifications? You want to investigate a trainer’s background, especially the certifications and education that he/she has. Most trainers hold several certifications from a variety of certifying organizations. ACE, (the American Council on Exercise) and ACSM (the American College of Sports Medicine) are two examples. Each trainer’s resume, brochures and Web sites will include a list of certifications, educations and specialties. A second criteria to consider is location.
Where is this trainer and where would you meet for your workouts? As with selecting a gym, you are much more likely to adhere to your program if your workout location is close to where you live. The most obvious place to start looking for a trainer is at your own gym. Most gyms provide information boards, brochures and web sites that feature the trainers who operate in their facility. This gives you a chance to research the backgrounds of the various trainers at your gym so that you can narrow down your choices according to each trainers’ qualifications based on your training goals and needs. Once you decide on one or two trainers whose profiles seem to be a good fit for you, your next step would be to set up a meeting/consultation. In this meeting, you’ll be able to see how the two of you interact. Most importantly, you want to feel that your trainer really is interested in you and in promoting your agenda, not his. Through the course of the meeting, you will also have the chance to discuss payment plans and procedures. The trainer will also be able to explain the risks and benefits of embarking upon a fitness program. MEDITATION&REFLECTION
Beginning a Meditation Practice
Written by Diane Hageman
I
t may seem impossible during these challenging times to relax and find a pathway to inner peace and serenity. Meditation can help – there are many benefits of developing a meditation practice. Benefits can range from relaxation to increased overall energy and ability to deal with the stress in our lives. Many scientific studies have documented the positive effects of meditation: accelerated brain functioning and comprehension; enhancing creativity;
increased memory; an overall sense of well being. Meditation is also thought to strengthen the immune system and aid in healing. By knowing the negative effects of stress on our physical bodies, we can help heal our bodies by releasing tension and de-stressing through meditation. What is meditation? Meditation is going beyond the “thinking mind” to a state of relaxation or deeper awareness. Author Stuart Wilde states, “Meditation is effortless concentration. It is an action

April 2009
set in the context of non-action.” This is not an intense concentration, but rather a subtle concentration where the mind rests lightly and clearly on a focal point. As you begin to explore and develop a meditation practice, it is important to remember it is a process. Release any expectations or definite goals. Allow your meditations to develop at a natural rhythm. Let go of preconceived ideas of what meditating “should be.” Like a muscle that builds strength as it is used, daily meditation builds energy and you will feel the many benefits flowing to you. You will soon develop a strong sense of serenity and inner peace. Meditating occasionally is beneficial, and creating a daily practice is even better. You may also find it beneficial to meditate in a group setting – the energy of group mediation can help to deepen and enhance your experience. It can be a great place to explore different meditations and meditation techniques. One of the easiest ways to begin meditating is with conscious breathing. Focusing on the breath is the best place to begin. To start, sit in a comfortable position with your spine straight, being neither too relaxed nor rigid. Take a few slow deep breaths through your nose. As you are inhaling and exhaling, discover where you can feel your breath. It may be in your chest, stomach or in your nostrils. This will be your focus point. Allow your breath to flow easily, naturally and deeply, feeling your focus point with each inhalation and exhalation. Keep your attention on your breath and focus point, allowing yourself to relax more and more. Remember not to force your breath, just feel it and allow its deep natural rhythm to relax you. If any distracting thoughts or worries come to mind, just bring your attention back to your breath and allow the distracting thought to pass through. Don’t resist these errant thoughts; just allow them to pass by as you are re-focusing on your breath. You will slowly create an awareness of the moment.
If you have tried to develop a meditation practice and can’t quite seem to stop the distracting thoughts and mind chatter, here are few tips that may help: • Wear loose comfortable clothing. • Start slowly and practice regularly. Begin with five or ten minutes a day. Then slowly increase the time up to 30 to 40 minutes a day. If all you have is ten minutes, that’s okay, the important thing is to do it. • Find the time of day that works for you, during which you will not be disturbed. Some people find meditating in the morning, before the rest of the world is awake, works for them. Others find an evening meditation is more convenient. Try different times to find what works for you. Sunrise and sunset can also be powerful times. • Turn off phones, radios, TVs and computers; to be sure you won’t be interrupted. • Create a sacred space to meditate and do it there daily. This will build an energy that will help to still the mind chatter. This doesn’t have to be anything elaborate; it may just be your favorite chair. There are many types of meditations and techniques, such as mantra meditation, guided meditation, walking meditation and a metta (a loving kindness) meditation. Explore as many different kinds as you can to identify the one that resonates with you. Practice it regularly and you will be amazed at just how rewarding “doing nothing” can be.
What is a
Compounding Pharmacy?
B
efore drugs were produced in mass quantities, compounding was a standard means of providing prescription medications. Today, compounding pharmacies employ physicians and technologies not available in most chain pharmacies to better assist consumers. Compounding is the process of customizing prescriptions and medications to fit a patient’s individual needs and preferences. This can be beneficial for various reasons – perhaps you are allergic to a filler used in a prescription; having your medication compounded will help avoid any reactions. If medication is given in a particular form not to your liking, maybe liquid form, you can have it made into a solid form instead. Compounding can also help with distributing exact doses for someone who needs assistance keeping track. Wonderful for getting children to take necessary medications, a compounder can take that prescription and put it into a lollipop or something more fun for kids. Medications or prescriptions can be made in a variety of ways: creams, trans dermal gels, suppositories, nasal sprays and even lip balms. The strength, flavoring and form of a medication can also be altered through compounding. Inability to swallow
a big pill, disgusted by the taste of a medication, and taking too little or too much medicine are problems of the past with the help of a compounding pharmacy. References: 1. http://www.tahoecompounders.com/ 2. https://www.ucprx.com/ 3. http://www.ftmguide.org/compounding.html

Natural Help For
Depression Written by Bruce Eichelberger, OMD
I
n the last 15 years, depression seems to be on the rise. Television bombards us with slick ads for anti-depressant medications and articles come out regularly addressing the issue. There is no doubt that people experiencing depression need help. The deep, dark, hopeless feeling of being stuck is the opposite of quality of life. Depression is described in two basic forms: endogenous (brain chemistry imbalances) and exogenous (reaction to events). There are other sub-divisions in each of these categories, but we won’t address them here. It’s enough to say that each type has similar symptoms, which include:
• Mood swings that interfere with daily functioning or reduce productivity • Pessimism, hopelessness or despair • Irritability or excessive anger • Loss of appetite or excessive appetite • Changes in sleep pattern or duration • Loss of interest in usual activities • Loss of sex drive • Increased fatigue • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness • Slowed thinking or poor concentration • Difficulty making decisions • Suicide attempts or thoughts • Withdrawal from social activities • Worrying or feeling guilty about the past

Many people have one or more of these experiences at various times in their life. It is a clinical problem only when at least three of them occur regularly on an ongoing basis. Western medicine commonly treats depression of all types with pharmaceutical drugs. These drugs

affect levels of various brain chemicals involved with changes in mood. These chemicals include Dopamine, Serotonin, Norepinephrine and Acetylcholine. As with most pharmaceutical treatments, many drugs to treat depression have toxic side effects, some of which are: • Amnesia, anxiety, confusion, drowsiness, forgetfulness (Benzodiazepines) • Reduced libido and sexual performance (MAO Inhibitors, SSRIs) • Heart arrhythmias, hypertension, blurred vision, weight gain (Tricyclic Antidepressants) • Gastric bleeding, suicide (SSRIs) Although if necessary, these drugs can be life savers, but there are more natural ways to reverse and even eliminate depression.
Natural Approaches for Depression Relief There are several ways to relieve depression using natural methods; we will explore two methods: using Oriental Medicine and testing, then rebalancing brain chemistry (neurotransmitters) using natural supplements. They can be used individually or together. In Oriental Medicine, depression symptoms come from an underlying
The Passage to Power
• Qi Stagnation – This is stuck or blocked vital energy in the body, typically associated with stuck energy in the liver. Symptoms include feeling withdrawn, irritable, reactive and hopeless.
Menopause & Hypnosis
• Damp Stagnation – Dampness includes
a feeling of heaviness, lethargy and foggy-headedness. This often accompanies depression and corresponds closely to dietary choices.
• Qi Deficiency – When depression accompanies fatigue and loss of interest in normal activities, deficient vital energy can be to blame. There can also be combinations of any or all of these three present in depression. It is important to have a clear understanding of what’s going on in the body before treating. Treatments include acupuncture, herbal medicine and specific breathing and movement exercises (qigong). The second approach, testing and then rebalancing neurotransmitters, can also be very effective. A simple urine sample sent for laboratory testing shows balance levels of seven crucial brain chemicals, including Dopamine, Serotonin, Epinephrine, Norepinephrine, GABA, Histamine and Glutamate. Once we measure high and low levels of these important brain chemicals, there is a twostep process for bringing them back into normal ranges. This involves taking specific combinations of amino acids, herbs and nutrients aimed first at increasing the brain-calming neurotransmitters, then balancing out the brain-focusing neurotransmitters. Whichever approach someone takes, the result is a return to feeling happier and more productive. And most importantly, this is accomplished without concerns about unwanted side effects from powerful drugs. References: 1. reathless, Ella burst into her hypnotherapist’s office confessing she was “mean and nasty” to her husband over the weekend. She felt irritable and restless, experienced hot flashes which she hated, and thought she was in menopause. Something had to change. All the stress associated with hormonal upheavals showed itself in her body. Her hypnotherapist, specializing in the passage to power–the menopausal journey–suggested a path for her return to harmony in body, mind and soul. Ella discovered some of the wonderful, new things she could do to reframe her situation and nourish her inner being. Menopause can be a dynamic time of reinventing oneself, of setting new priorities. It’s a time of shifting priorities from giving one’s life for others to diving deep within oneself to release that authentic inner self. It doesn’t mean leaving the nurturing task to others, but balancing it with self-discovery and “blossoming.” This physical change as a rite of passage to wisdom and power is more accepted and understood now than ever before. How can hypnosis help Ella, and what can she do physically to help herself? The hypnotherapist, working with the subconscious mind, can talk to the organs and cells of the body because the body is directly related to the subconscious mind. Negativity, which threatens the immune system and starves the cells, can be reversed

pattern of imbalance. There are several of these patterns:
through direct suggestion and the use of metaphor. Shifting negative to positive through guided imagery in the hypnosis process triggers a sense of safety in the body bringing balance and wholeness to the physical, mental and spiritual system. Hypnosis will help her Inner Healer (the parasympathetic nervous system) bring balance to her body, up regulate her immune system, boost her self-esteem and decrease her stress. Hypnosis can also help in reframing the symptoms of menopause by looking at them from a different perspective. Using direct suggestion and metaphor techniques, an uncomfortable hot flash due to hormone imbalance can be transformed into an energy surge, burning away the hurts and disappointments of the past. Distress can be transformed into gratitude for a spiritual growth burst. A hypnotherapist can work with the subconscious mind by teaching deep relaxation, and by implanting agreed-upon suggestions while she is in a hypnotic state. First the hypnotherapist will work with the client to identify several resource states—past experiences where she felt empowered, confident, healthy and loved. Then the resource states can be made into suggestions, which will fortify her self-esteem and empower her to move forward with her dreams.

Inflammation & WEIGHTLOSS Written by Virginia Parsons, MS, CCHT, CTLC, NC
I
t may surprise you to learn that inflammation and obesity are closely related. How exactly does inflammation relate to the obesity epidemic our country is currently experiencing? Two-thirds of Americans have weight challenges, and 3.8 million Americans weigh over 300 pounds. More than 50 percent of Americans are chronically inflamed, but few are aware of it. Understanding what causes inflammation and how to alleviate it is a major key to vibrant health and long term weight management. What causes inflammation? There are many contributing factors that can overload the body and create chronic inflammation. Dietary choices, such as excess sugar, high glycemic carbohydrates, Trans and saturated fats, and excessive eating all cause inflammation. We are not genetically programmed to eat this way. Poor dietary habits trigger inflammatory molecules which block cell receptors that regulate metabolism, resulting in a sluggish metabolism and increased fat deposition. Many people develop sensitivity to gluten found in wheat, rye, barley, spelt, kamut and other grains that are milled in facilities where wheat is processed. People who eat an abundance of these grains in many processed forms, may develop a gluten intolerance that inflames the gut, causing digestive upset and intestinal irritation. Gluten intolerance can damage the intestinal villa and cause major digestive problems. If left unchecked, this can eventually lead to celiac disease, a chronic inflammatory condition. Stress is another major contributor to inflammation. The sympathetic nervous system releases cortisol and adrenaline in response to stress signals, preparing the body for flight or fight. This system works well when the body truly needs to defend itself or run for protection. But in modern society, one seldom fights or flights, or reacts, and consequently then these pro-inflammatory hormones build up in the system, creating a chronic state of inflammation and hormonal imbalance. Elevated

cortisol levels are associated with excessive belly fat, weight gain, insulin resistance and leptin resistance, the satiety hormone. Appetite increases, metabolism becomes sluggish, blood sugar rises, and the body moves into fat storage mode. Other contributors to chronic inflammation are the toxins consumed in food, allergens, additives and preservatives, medicines, alcohol and environmental pollutants. All contribute to a toxic, overloaded liver. This in turn overloads the lymphatic system, further adding to a chronic state of inflammation. When the body is chronically inflamed, it is very difficult to lose weight and feel healthy. How can you determine if you are one of the 50 percent who are chronically inflamed? C-reactive protein is a major body marker for inflammation. Its presence in the blood is the best indicator of heightened inflammation. The best test is a high-sensitivity C-Reactive Protein test (hs-CRP). Reducing inflammation is multifaceted. Studies indicate that a low glycemic impact diet, rich in fiber, phytonutrients and live enzymatic activity help alleviate inflammation, as well as insulin resistance. A lowglycemic lifestyle emphasizes whole, fresh, unprocessed foods, fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts, legumes, lean protein and healthy fats. A diet high in omega-3 fats (found in cold water fish such as salmon or sardines) not only reduces inflammation but also improves insulin sensitivity. Increasing fiber intake to 20-25 grams/day also
lowers inflammation and C-reactive protein levels. Managing stress also has many anti-inflammatory benefits. Try incorporating several minutes of slow deep breathing into your daily routine. Take a walk and enjoy the fresh air; take a mental vacation; or just get your body moving more. We are meant to be active, and increased activity and deep breathing will help deplete the fat stimulating stress hormones. Green tea, cayenne, ginger, turmeric and cocoa are some antiinflammatory herbs that can be incorporated into your diet. Probiotics and digestive enzymes are also helpful. Finally, pay attention to your thoughts. For every thought, there is a central nervous system physiological response. Negative, toxic, angry, frustrated thoughts only add fuel to an inflammatory fire. A change of attitude, in addition to the above suggestions can help calm inflammation and return the body to a healthy weight and vibrant health.

DENTALHEALTH
YOUR TEETH: Simple… and Simply The Foundation of Good Health Written by Dan Mannikko DDS

t first glance, teeth really do seem simple. We use them to chew and we use them to smile, and if you brush them once in a while, you may not think too much of them until they hurt. What many people fail to realize, though, is that in oral health, pain is often a symptom signaling the later stages of disease. For example, with high blood pressure and high cholesterol, you can have silent, irreversible damage to the body and heart, but you feel no pain until it is too late. The same is true for dental health, and that’s why dentists recommend regular visits to catch little things before they become big ones. Science has brought to light more interesting facts about dental health in recent
years, some of which are commonly known and some not.

cancer, diabetes, and a shortened life span by as much as 20 percent, learning difficulties, attention span/ability to focus, and the overall quality of sleep. In sum, airway problems create tremendous strain on the body and affect the emotional side of a person, too. From a neuromuscular dentistry standpoint, the teeth are the building blocks of good health. Most people start with 32 adult teeth. When the “wisdom teeth” are taken out, many people lose these four teeth because of lack of room or small jaws. Some may believe that losing a few teeth is no big deal because they have a couple dozen “others” and that “no one will notice anyway because the removed teeth are in the back,” and so on.

The problem is, if we think of a stack of blocks ten blocks high, they are pretty stable as long as they are placed solidly one on top of the other. If we alter the top block to overhang the others, we lose stability of all the blocks. To improve the stability of the group, we slightly move the others to support the top block that was initially moved out of place. Other blocks take more stress because of their altered position. In the human body, the head is the top block. Keeping the head (eyes) level with the horizon is paramount for our survival (balance). Additionally, when our nose is partially or completely obstructed, we will alter our head position (top block) forward, rolling the head back to open the oral airway to maximize the amount of air we can bring in.
4 steps to detect hormone deficiencies:
Mouth breathing alters the growth and development of the face/jaws due to altered tongue posture from the mouth being open. As the tongue misses its place to direct growth of the face in a forward direction, the upper/ lower jaws and nose fall down and back giving us longer faces, smaller airways, detruded jaws, crowded teeth and TMJ — all driven by the need for air. Fortunately, recent advances in neuromuscular dentistry allow us to diagnose and treat many root causes of these symptoms in ways we couldn’t do in the past. The bottom line is, teeth are important; therefore, well cared for teeth and a balanced bite are vital to your overall health.

Codependency QUIZ
Written by Candace Andrews, LADC
C
odependency is many things. It is a dependency on people – on their moods, behaviors, sickness or wellbeing and their love. It is a paradoxical dependency. Codependents appear to be depended upon, but they are dependent. They look strong but feel helpless, appear controlling but in reality are controlled themselves, sometimes by an illness such as alcoholism. These are the issues that dictate recovery. Major characteristics of codependents are exhibited within the following categories: caretaking; low self-worth; repression; obsession; controlling; living in denial; depending on others; poor, ineffective communication; unable to establish strong boundaries; lack of trust; and anger. With 19 million Americans suffering from depression, either perpetuating or stemming from codependency, it is im-
portant to be aware and reflect upon our own behavior. Many professionals say the first step toward change is awareness. The second step is acceptance. With that in mind, let’s examine the characteristics of codependency – answer yes or no to the questions in this quiz to see if you take on a codependent likeness:

If you answered “yes” to 5 or fewer statements, you have relatively healthy boundaries, confidence and wisdom in relationships. If you answered “yes” to 6–12 statements, your life is shaped to a significant degree by the demands of needy people in your life. You often feel responsible for the choices others make, and you try too hard to help them make the right ones. You would benefit from the input of a competent counselor or support group. If you answered “yes” to 13 or more statements, you have lost your sense of identity, and you are consumed by the problems of addicted or depressed people in your life. You have to take steps to get well whether that person does or not. Find a counselor or support group to help you gain wisdom and strength.

BABY CHICK
For Easter?
THINK AGAIN… Written by Brittany Russell

aster – the Christian celebration of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection – oddly enough brings to mind brightly colored eggs, baskets full of candy and large chocolate bunnies. Traditions associated with the Easter season – feasting, getting back what you gave up for Lent, outdoor activities – are enjoyable for children and adults alike. However, some Easter traditions are of particular concern for children, placing them at risk for serious illness. Many parents may decide to treat their child to a baby chick or duckling as a pet this Easter holiday. Because they are so soft and cute, many people do not realize the potential danger baby chicks and ducklings can be to small children. Young birds often carry harmful bacteria called Salmonella. Each spring, children become infected with Salmonella after receiving a baby chick or duckling.
Harmful bacteria carried in the chick and duckling’s intestine contaminates their environment and the entire surface of the animal. Children can be exposed to the bacteria by simply holding, cuddling or kissing the birds. Children are most susceptible to infection because they are more likely than others to put their fingers into their mouths and because their immune systems are still developing. Others at increased risk include persons with HIV/AIDS, pregnant women, the elderly and those with immune-compromised illnesses.
Consider the following before purchasing this holidayspecific pet: To meet the demand around Easter, chicks are specially hatched in large quantities and are shipped around the country. Hatching and shipping many animals at one time increases stress upon

chicks and ducklings, making them more prone to disease and early death. Many chicks and young birds carry Salmonella in their feces. It is difficult to know if a chick is carrying Salmonella as there is usually no sign of the illness. At this time, the federal government has no restrictions concerning the sale of chicks and ducklings. State governments have recognized the risk of Salmonella to young children and have passed restrictions to pet stores and local agencies that prohibit the sale of baby chicks around Easter.
More about Salmonellosis Salmonellosis (sal-mon-el-OH-sis) is a disease caused by the bacterium Salmonella. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and stomach pain that start one to three days after ingestion of the bacteria, and last for one week. Other symptoms may be nausea, chills, headaches or an achy feeling. Young children, the elderly and other immune-compromised persons may have a more severe reaction. Treatments usually consist of fluid therapy and pain relief. Antibiotics should only be used to treat severe cases of illness because antibiotics may prolong the disease as many strains of Salmonella are resistant to antibiotics. References: 1. Fibromyalgia Could Oxygen Therapy Help?
Written by David Rovetti, DC
F
ibromyalgia syndrome is a chronic musculoskeletal disorder characterized by widespread pain, tenderness at specific anatomical sites (i.e. tender points) and clinical manifestations such as fatigue, sleep disturbance and irritable bowel syndrome. Patients with fibromyalgia are always in pain; they always hurt. It is not clear what causes this disease, but there is belief that several interacting factors such as muscle overload, poor spinal posture, disturbed sleep, psychogenic factors and reduced concentrations of high-energy phosphate may be the cause. There is also a hypoth-
esis that low oxygen levels in the blood and muscles causes degenerative changes (and thus, pain) in the muscles associated with fibromyalgia. If the low oxygen level is the cause, or part of the cause of fibromyalgia, then an increase in the oxygen levels in the fluids of the body would certainly help. Unfortunately, breathing deeper or breathing pure oxygen (the air we normally breathe is only about 21 percent oxygen) does not increase the muscle oxygen concentration to any significant degree because the hemoglobin molecule in our blood is very efficient at carrying what small
percent of oxygen that is in the air to the muscles. What is needed is a mechanism to carry additional oxygen to the muscles via the fluid around the red blood cells, the plasma. This is where hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) comes in. Via Henry’s Law of Gasses, the higher the pressure around liquid (the plasma and the red blood cells in your body), the more a gas (oxygen) will dissolve in it. In a 1.5 atmosphere chamber while breathing 95-100 percent oxygen, the amount of oxygen in the plasma is 10 times greater than normal.

he correct Feng Shui flow and occurrence of water often spells extreme good fortune that manifests as wealth and prosperity. Water is another word for wealth – good water brings in money and bad water takes money away. Water is also one of the two components of Feng Shui, the other being wind (Feng = water, Shui = wind). For that reason, when water is placed in harmony with the winds, good fortune comes about. Water is a very important, auspicious element in Feng Shui, always being slow moving and clean.
Water Do’s • Rivers that meander gently past in full view of the main door are said to be excellent. Rivers that meander evenly across flat land are more auspicious than those that run fast, possibly running into waterfalls or rapids. • Water should always “embrace” the home. • Water inside the dwelling such as a water fountain should always be running. • It signifies wealth going out and wealth coming back. If it is not running all the time it signifies money that is all dried up! Please make sure that it is always running and always clean, and then fresh new opportunities will be coming your way. • Having fish inside a fountain would make it all the more prosperous. • Sinks inside the home, kitchen sinks and bathroom sinks, should always have plants next to them. Even though sinks supply clean fresh water, they also

have drains, and this fact drains the Chi. There needs to be a wood element (a plant) near the drain to stop the Chi from draining and use it for growth.
Water Don’ts • Rivers that flow past one’s home should never be straight, nor should they appear to be aimed at one’s building – in Feng Shui, nothing should ever be aimed at anything, especially not at you. • Water should never shoot at the home. When a river seems to flow directly toward the main door of a house, that is not a good sign. • It is also believed that water should never flow behind a home or a building as this signifies missed opportunities. This configuration signifies that while opportunities for advancement and success may be plentiful, it will be difficult for residents to take advantage of these opportunities. • Water is that it should not appear to be flowing away from the home. If the water is flowing away, it is a sign of loss. • Water fountains should never leak and should always work properly. Do not spend too much time trying to fix a broken fountain – just get a new one. Reference: 1. Too, Lillian. The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Feng Shui. Element Book Limited, 1999.

Pain Management INDIVIDUALIZED THERAPY Written by David Vasenden, RPh Effective pain management must be individualized, and is best achieved by a team approach involving the patient, his/her family, and health care providers. Optimal treatment may involve not only the use of traditional analgesics such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and opioids (formerly called “narcotics”), but may also include other medications that possess pain-relieving properties (antidepressants, anticonvulsants, antiarrhythmics, anesthetics, etc.). By combining various agents to alter the sensation of pain, physicians have found that smaller concentrations of each medication can be used. Topical or transdermal preparations facilitate the absorption of medications through the skin, and can often eliminate the need for injectable therapy when patients are unable to take medication orally, or when oral medications cause problems such as stomach upset. When medications are administered topically or transdermally, there may be fewer side effects and drug interactions than when the same medication is taken orally. Customized formulations may
include only one drug, or a combination of compatible medications. Many drugs may be compounded as dosage forms that are not commercially available, such as lollipops, suppositories, powders and flavored suspensions. If pain is inadequately treated, it can lead to enormous social costs in the form of needless suffering and excessive healthcare expenditures. Patients with pain or other distressing symptoms that persist despite the best efforts of their current healthcare provider should request a referral and seek specialists in pain management or palliative – to reduce severity of symptoms – care. ain control is crucial because uncontrolled pain prevents patients from working productively, enjoying recreation, or taking pleasure in their roles in family and society. Patients and their loved ones should never allow pain to continue due to concerns about “being a complainer,” medicationrelated side effects, or loss of control due to the use of pain medications. As soon as pain begins, it is important that the patient meets with a knowledgeable, experienced practitioner. Pain should be assessed to characterize the pain by location, intensity, and aggravating and relieving factors. Frequently, a 10-point Numeric Pain Intensity Scale or Visual Analog Scale is used to help the patient and practitioner to evaluate the pain and monitor their therapy. Successful long-term pain management requires continuity of care that provides an appropriate level of monitoring and responds quickly, flexibly and expertly to the changing needs of the patient. Administering standard doses of analgesics, or painkillers, easily controls acute pain. However, chronic pain may have a myriad of causes and perpetuating factors, and therefore can be much more difficult to manage. This may require a multidisciplinary approach and customized treatment protocols to meet the specific needs of each patient. Types of chronic pain include neuropathic pain, musculoskeletal (back, knee, hip) pain, fibromyalgia, migraine, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and cancer pain. Chronic pain afflicts approximately 10 to 20 percent of the adult population, and approximately half of these people experience pain, which is inadequately treated, but could be relieved with proper treatment.

ASSISTIVE
Listening Devices Written by Michael LeMay, Au.D.
F
or those of us with normal hearing, we take for granted the fact that listening and hearing is automatic. Our connection to the world through face-to-face conversation, telephone conversations, radio and television is a way of life and is in general, effortless. For those individuals who struggle with partial or significant hearing loss, this connection is certainly not effortless or automatic and can be extremely difficult. Staying connected to the world is extremely important to our health and psychological well-being. Our hearing is a vital link to friends, family and all that is going on around us. Impaired hearing limits the ability to connect and can have a significant impact on our overall feeling of being involved in life. The consequences of this lack of feeling connected can be frustration, isolation, depression and a general feeling of loneliness. The telephone can be an extremely important link for many people. It is common to see patients in an Audiology practice who are very dependent on tele-
phone communication as their primary connection to family and the general outside world. There are a variety of amplified telephones available designed specifically for the hearing impaired. For those individuals with severe to profound hearing loss, close captioned telephones can be obtained to provide the additional visual cues to supplement the auditory message. There is now new hearing aid technology that allows the connection of the hearing aid to a landline or the cell phone. Hearing aids themselves are small and very unobtrusive. The hearing aid user can simply tap a button on a “streamer device” which pairs their telephone to the hearing aid and be able to use the telephone via a direct Bluetooth connection without having to use any type of headset. This streamer can also be paired to the television, radio or computer. This technology offers the individual with hearing loss who is using hearing instruments hands-free connection to their telephone. Wireless Bluetooth technology is opening new doors for the hearing impaired. Individuals with significant hearing

loss can often have difficulty hearing and understanding television despite the use of their hearing aids. Available now are a variety of assistive listening devices for the television which can be used either without hearing aids or in conjunction with hearing aids to substantially improve this situation. It is important to realize that most of the common problems that individuals with hearing impairment have been struggling with in the past can be helped and sometimes eliminated with modern technology. It may be a matter of being fit with the appropriate hearing instruments. In some cases, it may be necessary to supplement a wearable hearing aid with some type of assistive listening device. So, does it help? A 2004 randomized controlled study with 50 participants showed positive results after 15 HBOT sessions as shown by: 1) a significant reduction in tender points; 2) a significant decrease in pain scale scores; 3) a significant increase in the pain threshold of the tender points. So why isn’t HBOT the standard of care for the treatment of fibromyalgia? Many patients with fibromyalgia, probably most, have never heard of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Many doctors don’t know about it either. Let’s face it, no drug company rep is going to visit a physician’s office to tell them about the benefits of oxygen. There is no interest by the pharmaceutical companies to perform and publish a multi-million dollar study to see how much this would help either. With this disease, as with many health problems, you are on your own to find the best treatment. HBOT is also recommended by numerous fibromyalgia support groups. As stated in the study, “HBOT may be an effective alternative treatment modality for patients with fibromyalgia syndrome, especially for those with chronic pain.

HPV
At A Glance
G
enital human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). The virus infects the skin and mucous membranes. There are more than 40 HPV types that can infect the genital areas of men and women, including the skin of the penis, vulva (area outside the vagina), anus, and the linings of the vagina, cervix and rectum. You cannot see HPV – most people who become infected with HPV do not even know they have it. Genital HPV is passed on through genital contact, most often during vaginal and anal sex. A person can have HPV even if years have passed since he or she had sex. Most infected persons do not realize they are infected or that they are passing the virus to a sex partner. Very rarely, a pregnant woman with genital HPV can pass it to her baby during vaginal delivery. If it is passed from mother to child during delivery, the child may develop warts in the throat or voice box – a condition called recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). Most people with HPV do not develop symptoms or health problems. But sometimes certain types of HPV can cause genital warts in men and women. Other HPV types can cause cervical cancer and other less common cancers, such as cancers of the vulva, vagina, anus and penis. The types of HPV that can cause genital
warts are not the same as the types that can cause cancer. In 90 percent of cases, the body’s immune system clears the HPV infection naturally within two years. Yet, the body will remain a carrier even if HPV lies dormant. This is true of both high-risk and low-risk types. Genital warts usually appear as small bumps or groups of bumps, usually in the genital area. They can be raised or flat, single or multiple, small or large, and sometimes cauliflower shaped. Warts may appear within weeks or months after sexual contact with an infected person. Or, they may not appear at all. If left untreated, genital warts may go away, remain unchanged, or increase in size or number. They will not turn into cancer. • There are over 100 HPV strands of the virus. • About 30 of these types are sexually transmitted and cause genital HPV. • Genital HPV is spread through skin-toskin contact, not through an exchange of bodily fluid. • Genital HPV cannot be entirely prevented by condom use. • This virus is often asymptomatic – people usually don’t know they have it. • About 5.5 million new genital HPV cases occur each year – this is about 1/3 of all new STD infections. • About 20 million people – men and

women – are thought to have an active HPV infection at any given time. • Nearly three out of four Americans between the ages of 15 and 49 have been infected with genital HPV in their lifetime. • HPV can be contracted from one partner, remain dormant, and then later be unknowingly transmitted to another sexual partner, including a spouse. • Though usually harmless, some types cause cervical cancer. • About 14,000 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year. • Over 5,000 women each year die of cervical cancer in the United States. • The best way to screen for cervical cancer is a Pap test, which may be done alone or in combination with an HPV DNA test. • The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend that sexually active women and women age 21 and older should have an annual gynecologic exam in addition to Pap tests at regular intervals (the frequency of Pap tests can vary depending on a woman’s age and the type of Pap test being done). Bio-Identical H ORMONE R EPLACEMENT Therapy Written by Robert Rand, MD
B
io-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (B-HRT) is a “new hot subject” thanks to coverage by Oprah Winfrey and Suzanne Somers. There is a lot of excitement and controversy about this subject. B-HRT is exactly what it sounds like. Bio-Identical hormones are hormones identical to those the body produces on its own, unlike the synthetic hormones developed by pharmaceutical companies. The main reason for this difference between B-HRT and pharmaceutically developed hormones is very simple. It is impossible to get a patent on a hormone exactly identical to what the body makes. If the pharmaceutical companies cannot get a patent there is no real reason for them to produce these hormones. As a matter of fact this is why these companies are fighting against these hormones being more readily available! The hormones identical to what your body produces can easily be made in a local compounding pharmacy. They have less deleterious effects, are in many ways safer, more effective, and easier to use than the pharmaceutical alternatives, which have been chemically altered and may not even be recognized by the body in the way that they should be; hence some of the dangerous side effects. B-HRT has been around for years but most practitioners of medicine have not yet adopted them into their practice of medicine. Hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are used in “aging” patients for any number of medical conditions. These hormones are adminis-
tered in such a way as to return the patient’s levels to normal “physiologic” levels. In other words these hormone levels often drop as we age and we simply endeavor to maintain a level of hormones considered to be “healthy” in a younger population. Another advantage of the bio-identical hormones is that we can test the levels and monitor them to ensure optimal hormone levels for health. For women any number of hormonal, menopausal symptoms and syndromes can be safely treated. For men, there are numerous advantages to incorporating B-HRT into a health regimen. Many studies suggest that the bio-identical hormones are much safer in most cases than the synthetic alternatives, and offer a much better therapeutic solution.

ION CLEANSING Written by Carol Christian
A
s we age, our bodies retain toxins in the muscle and organ tissues. The effects from these toxic buildups can affect our health in any number of ways – the most obvious being the slow deterioration in our ability to fight disease. Toxic buildup is part of the aging process, but release of these unhealthy substances allows our bodies to operate at a higher capacity, leading to a healthier overall system. The Ion Cleanse Detoxifying Footbath is one effective method. Ion Cleanse is an electronic detoxification system that acts like a reverse osmosis system, magnetizing the ions with positive and negative electronic currents. Adding salt to the water increases the density of the solution, which accelerates the osmosis process. The process works like this: The feet are placed in a tub of clear water, which contains the ion cleanse machine, and sea salt is added to make the water more conductive. The client is instructed to refrain from doing anything during the half-hour ion cleanse process except to sit back and relax. Once the Ion Cleanse machine is turned on, it generates ions that travel through the body attaching themselves to different toxic substances and neutralizing the positive or negative charge each carries. The energy generated causes the pores in the feet, the largest in the body, to open even larger. Toxins are pulled down to the feet due to the effects of gravity. The water in the tub begins to change color. A manufacturer of the machines used, A Major Difference and Focus, indicate that the water will change color whether or not the feet are in the tub; however, the change will only be slight and is due to For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com
the added salt and the impurities in the water. The company also states that the different colors that appear during the process reflect the area of the body being detoxified. The colors range from yellow, blue, orange, green, brown and black. Normally, yellow is the first color to appear. This indicates detoxification of the urinary system (which consists of the kidneys and the bladder). Yellow is often followed by orange which indicates detoxification of the joints. Toxins often settle in the joints and, over time, can deteriorate these areas, which may then lead to arthritis. A brown color indicates tobacco and cellular debris are being released. Even a non-smoker can release tobacco during these sessions, often due to accumulation of second hand smoke from a variety of sources. Release of yeast appears as scum floating on the water. We all have an excessive amount of yeast, which is caused by a high level of sugar consumption. On occasion, a client may report feelings of nausea or light-headedness. However, quick relief is usually found within minutes after the client drinks a glass of water. These symptoms are typically caused by the amount of toxins being released. One ion cleanse footbath will affect the body from three to five days. Repeated footbaths gradually strengthen the body’s immune system, increase the body’s metabolism and enhance the activities of the lymphatic system. Most clients report experiencing more energy, balanced sleep patterns, higher mental clarity, fewer aches and pains, clearer looking skin and a general sense of wellbeing. Additional benefits may include increased circulation and sex drive and decreased allergy symptoms. A series of 14 sessions is recommended but even one session per month would be beneficial with the ion cleanse. Although the manufacturer states that the Ion Cleanse Detoxification Footbath is natural and safe, some people shouldn’t use it: lactating or pregnant females, clients with pacemakers, clients with open wounds. Diabetics must eat before use. References: 1. Goffe-Gardner, Josephine. http://www.solutionstowellness.com/contact.html

Gardasil Vaccination Helpful or Harmful? Written by Ffjorren Zolfahgar
P
icture this print ad: a young woman is smiling a wide, toothy grin and she is happy to be alive. Of course, she is also donning an adorable outfit. Pretty swirls of blue, pink and brown flowers adorn the page. She is quoted saying things like, “I’ll do everything I can to help my dreams come true,” referring to her choice on getting vaccinated. The vaccine is Gardasil, which protects its recipients from the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Apparently, it’s trendy, it’s cool and it will help you achieve your dreams. Marketing is great if you’re looking to sell something. A nice photo and a few digitally created flowers can make any subject seem dreamy. But the reality is that many girls are getting sick from their Gardasil injections. These injections are filled with ingredients like yeast, salt and water. Nope, they’re not making bread dough, that’s just the base. The other parts of the recipe include a compound of aluminum, used to jump-start the immune system. They also add a dash of Polysorbate 80, which has its very own list of allergic reactions and negative side effects. Don’t forget the pinch of Sodium Borate, the main chemical in boric acid, which is found in roach powder. Alas, the star of this FDA approved recipe, Protein types 6, 11, 16 and 18 of HPV. This is how Merck & Co. creates the perfect vaccine, a series of three injections that will “gard” our daughters against HPV. According to Merck & Co. and the FDA, this vaccine will safeguard girls from cervical cancer and other HPV diseases. This could be a fairly true
outcome, as it should protect them from four strains of high and low risk HPV. However, HPV is a group of over 100 related viruses and more than 30 of them are passed from person to person through sexual contact. Therefore, boys have the same chance of contracting and carrying these viruses as girls do. However, Gardasil is marketed as a cervical cancer vaccination. It is recommended for girls and women between the ages of 9 and 26. The hope is to limit or eradicate repeated HPV infections among women, as repeated infections can cause abnormal cell growth. This increases a young woman’s risk for cervical cancer. Most HPV infections go away on their own, however high risk strains have a higher chance of leading to cell abnormality. It is obviously important for girls, women and men to be aware of HPV. It is also important to take certain precautions. Gardasil may seem like a great answer to a nagging question for some, but it is currently under scrutiny from the media, the FDA, CDC and more importantly, parents. This examination will persist as long as girls continue to get sick. According to the CDC, Center for Disease Control, as of December 31, 2008 more than 23 million doses of Gardasil were distributed in the U.S. Of those doses, the CDC received 11,916 reports of adverse affects that were linked to Gardasil vaccinations. There have also been 32 reports of U.S. deaths among females who received the Gardasil vaccination. Some of the illnesses that have been reported to the CDC, include, but are not limited to, lupus, fibromayalgia, seizures,

massive wart outbreaks, rashes, paralysis and blood clots. At this point, long-term side effects have not been established due to lack of scientific studies. If you’re concerned about HPV but do not want to receive a vaccination, you can lower your risk naturally. If you’re having sex with more than one partner, make sure to use condoms. Although studies are not linked directly to HPV, they have found lower rates of cervical cancer among women who use condoms. Also, pap smears are a must. Doctor’s are able to detect high risk HPV viruses early on. Unfortunately, there are no approved HPV screening tests for men at this time. JUNGIAN DREAMWORK SERIES:
Growing Through
Depression Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD
When we must deal with problems, we instinctively resist trying the way that leads through obscurity and darkness. We wish to hear only of unequivocal results, and completely forget that these results can only be brought about when we have ventured into and emerged again from the darkness. -Carl Jung, C.W. v.8. The Structure and Dynamics of the Psyche
F
rom the perspective of Jungian psychology, depression is an awakening and transformative process. It is the psyche’s attempt to bring the ego, or conscious identity, into greater alignment with our deeper nature and calling in life. Sometimes the pain of depression is required to get our attention, turn us inward and motivate us to change. Depression can open our minds and hearts to new ways of being. Like a snake shedding its skin, death of the old precedes the birth of our larger self.
When we are depressed we tend to see our depression as the problem. We just want our symptoms to go away so that we can get on with our lives as we had been living them. Sometimes we don’t stop to consider that perhaps it’s our current approach to life that is the problem. This is why dreams of death, suicidal thoughts and morbid preoccupations are often associated with depression. Symbolically, there is something that needs to die, to be let go of, or surrendered in our life. From the perspective of the psyche, death is a symbol of transformation rather than finality. In a fascinating research study, Dr. David Rosen, a Jungian psychiatrist, interviewed people who had survived jumps from the Golden Gate and San FranciscoOakland Bay bridges. Such jumps are nearly always fatal, but Dr. Rosen was able

to interview ten survivors. He found that each survivor underwent a transformative experience, which profoundly altered the way they looked at and approached life. Whether initially agnostic or religious, all reported a much deepened sense of meaning and purpose in life. Although survivors of serious suicide attempts are at high risk of further attempts, none of his interviewees had made another attempt. Dr. Rosen theorized that each survivor had undergone a symbolic death of the ego. In other words, an outworn, or ill-fitting identity had been sacrificed, making room for a more authentic and harmonious relationship with the personality core. Rosen coined the term “egocide” to describe this process. Although the ego is not actually killed–doing so would make one the psychological equivalent of an amoeba–its identity and viewpoint are restructured. This is experienced as a death to the ego and is often symbolized as such in our dreams. Jungian psychology interprets suicide as a literal enactment of what is meant to be a symbolic process. It is not the body
that is meant to die, but an unhelpful sensitivity for spiritual and emotional to his unique destiny and a broadened standpoint of the ego. In most depressions matters. ost traditions agree that the soul is timeless; yet our experience tells us that time is of the essence. The plane of the earth is a four-dimensional reality, and we experience multi-dimensions of our soul. How do we deal with these apparent discrepancies between time and timelessness, and living in the four dimensional space of earth while knowing and sensing the multi – dimensions of our being?
Change can be experienced as the need to choose and move; wherever we resist choice we limit our potential and inhibit our creativity. If difficulty is present at any level of consciousness, whether mental, physical, or emotional, it is usually the result of refusing to choose, thus opposing change. The cosmic joke is that we are always choosing. Every moment of our lives involves choice – yes, no, maybe, later – all of our choices are Change can be experienced made in this moment of now. operant from at least one dimension higher. To perceive a square you must view it from three dimensions. To perceive a cube you must view it from four dimensions. To observe ourselves we need to be in a higher dimension than the forth dimension of “reality.” To experience the illusion of causality, to have memories, to project into the future all require that our awareness needs to expand into a higher dimension. Looking at your life from an expanded state instead of being inside the drama gives you more choice of what to do next. Choices made from an expanded perspective have more congruency – we see more of what is going on; we have more information. When we expand our consciousness we have more of our Self; we have more of a profound sense of identity, partnership and alliance with our soul. Our soul or spiritual level of consciousness links us in an instant, like the synapses of nerves to times and places beyond the here and now. This linkage provides us with a profound sense of knowing and our choices are made with clarity and power. All parts of our self come together in the present. When all parts of our self are in the present we experience unconditional acceptance, and peace. Our consciousness has no part of it somewhere else wishing that it were different than the way it is. Integrating our awareness of expanded dimensional realities into our personality’s awareness of this life provides for presence. Presence is that state where time and space disappears; peace, acceptance and love are present. All aspects of our self are available to us and we are congruent. This is the place in meditation where we experience the perfection of the universe. Expanding our perceptual net and perceiving from this expanded dimension is a method used in Integrated

from coughs to constipation to depression. As an herbal supplement, it is reputed to help with fibromyalgia, energy, emphysema, low estrogen, frigidity, hot flashes, impotency, infertility, menopause, Parkinson’s disease, PMS, inflammation of prostate, Lou Gehrig’s disease, and more dealing with reproductive organs in both males and females.
he leaves of damiana, a relatively small shrub that produces small, aromatic flowers, have been used in the U.S. since 1874 as an aphrodisiac and “to improve the sexual ability of the enfeebled and aged.”
Damiana is said to have an odor somewhat like chamomile. Native to Mexico and the southern U.S., it blossoms in early to late summer and is followed by fruits that taste similar to figs. The leaves have traditionally been made into a tea, which was used by native people of Central and South America for its aphrodisiac effects. Spanish missionaries first recorded that the Mexican Indians drank Damiana tea mixed with sugar for its ability to enhance lovemaking.
One study suggests that damiana may have plant compounds with effects similar to those of progesterone. Over 150 herbs were tested for their ability to bind with estrogen and progesterone receptors in breast cancer cells and found that damiana was among the six highest progesteronebinding herbs. Damiana is also used for asthma, anxiety and headache; however, there is no scientific evidence that it works specifically for these conditions.
Today, the herb is conventionally made into a tea. In herbal medicine, it is used to treat conditions ranging

Dosage Typically, the herb is recommended with other herbs in a commercial preparation. Damiana can be found on its own in various forms including capsule, liquid extract and tea form. A typical dosage is a 400 mg capsule taken once or twice a day.

Safety and Precautions Consult a health care practitioner before beginning a new supplemental regimen, and be sure to only ingest recommended doses - Damiana contains a glycoside compound called arbutin. In the urinary tract, arbutin is converted into a chemical called hydroquinone. In large amounts, hydroquinone can cause nausea, vomiting, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), convulsions, and eventually collapse and death. The safety of damiana in children, pregnant or nursing women, or people with liver or kidney disease has not been established.

HERBS&SPICES

dded to nearly every savory, maybe some sweet, recipe one can think of, salt and pepper is the standard pair found on any dining table. Seemingly better suited for one another than Barbie and Ken, the two spices met during the 17th century and have been together since.
Sea Salt It all began with sea salt, one of the first commodities known to mankind. Often used as a currency, it is clear how valuable salt was and continues to be today. Areas that produce specialized sea salt include the Cayman Islands, Greece, France, Ireland, Colombia, Sicily, Maldon in Essex UK, Hawaii, Maine, Utah, San Francisco Bay and Cape Cod. Gourmets often believe sea salt to be better than ordinary table salt in taste and texture, though one cannot always taste the difference when dissolved. In applications where sea salt’s coarser texture is retained, it can provide different mouth feel and changes in flavor due to its different rate of dissolution. The mineral content also affects the taste. It may be difficult to distinguish sea salt from other salts with a high mineral content, such as pink Himalayan salt or grey colored rock salt. Iodized salt, or refined salt, contains 39 percent sodium, 60 percent chloride, up to 2 percent Ferro cyanide, aluminum, silicate, ammonium citrate and dextrose, and only .01 percent iodide. Though some claim refined salt to be a great source of iodine, the ratio begs to differ – there is insufficient iodine in salt to provide for the body’s iodine needs. Unrefined sea salt, untouched by man, contains many minerals that iodized table salt does not contain such as magnesium, sulfate, calcium and potassium. Salts healthful benefits: most effective in stabilizing irregular heartbeats; essential for the regulation of blood pressure; vital to the extraction of excess acidity from the cells in the body, particularly the brain cells; balances sugar levels in the blood; a needed element for diabetics; vital to the nerve cells’ communication and information processing; and clears the lungs of mucus plugs and sticky phlegm.

If you decide to use sea salt in your diet, continue to keep your total sodium consumption under 2,400 mgs per day.
Black Pepper Black pepper is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit (the peppercorn), usually dried and used as a spice. Dried ground pepper is one of the most common spices in European cuisine and its descendants, having been known and prized since antiquity for both its flavor and its use as a medicine. Black peppercorns are used in remedies in Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani medicine in India. The 5th century Syriac Book of Medicines prescribes pepper for such illnesses as constipation, diarrhea, earache, gangrene, heart disease, hernia, hoarseness, indigestion, insect bites, insomnia, joint pain, liver problems, lung disease, oral abscesses, sunburn, tooth decay and toothaches. Various sources from the 5th century onward also recommend pepper to treat eye problems, often by applying salves or poultices made with pepper directly to the eye. There is no current medical evidence that any of these treatments has any benefit; pepper applied directly to the eye would be quite uncomfortable and possibly damaging. It has been shown that pepper can dramatically increase absorption of selenium, vitamin B and beta-carotene as well as other nutrients. Together or on their own, salt and pepper are typically a subtle complement to other dominant flavors. Try crusting your favorite cut of meat with salt and pepper only, making them the star of your next meal! References: 1. Brownstein, David MD. Salt: Your Way to Health. A Silent Killer... Written by Tony C. Jensen, Doctor of Chiropractic
W
hat is Health – is it the absence of symptoms? Lets take the time to investigate that. If you don’t have symptoms right now are you completely healthy or is your body just setting on the edge ready to fall into symptoms? Symptoms start after our body has been pushed past its threshold of normal and so it creates symptoms as warning signs. The most overlooked body systems are the brain and nervous system. Your nervous system consist of two parts: the Central Nervous System or CNS = the Brain, Brain stem and the Spinal Cord; and the Peripheral Nervous System or PNS = the spinal nerves and all the nerves that go to every tissue and organ in your body. It is fair to say the brain and nervous system are the most important systems we have next to our soul. It’s the master computer for your body and the wiring that makes it possible for your heart, stomach, digestion, reproductive, skin, immune system and cells to all work 100 percent. Without the brain and nervous system, we’re dead! So if you take one of those delicate nerves and pinch it, what do you think is going to happen to the communication between the brain and that organ/
tissue/cell? That’s right, it won’t be able to work at its optimal function. Your threshold of pain depends on how fast you might feel pain symptoms but by then the nerve and surrounding tissue has been irritated for some time causing more problems, similar to waiting until you feel a cavity and have a swollen face and pain. It takes more work to fix it at this stage. Prior to the pain stage things have been slowly building. This is the same in the nervous system. You could be having mild symptoms that don’t seem that bad but they are slowly building for bigger problems. A Subluxation is where one of the joints of the vertebrae get stuck or jammed up – like when you jam your finger. It hurts so you pull it or grab it and rub it, but lets say you jammed your finger and you left it that way. In time your body would adapt around it, leaving you with a less than normal function of that finger. You cause a subluxation or pinched nerve at one of the joints and you leave it because it’s not that bad. Your body adapts around it trying to get out of pain or symptoms setting yourself up for future problems. Most people have an injury or problem that didn’t properly get taken care of
earlier, that is now coming back to haunt them. These people are the one’s that state “I just bent over to pick something up” or “I just reached for something” or “I just woke up like this.” These are all “Silent Killers” because you have been running on less than 100 percent nervous system function. So what has been happening to your body along the way? If that nerve goes to your stomach, your digestion and acids haven’t been working properly either. If the nerves go to your heart or lungs, legs, hands, immune system or muscles etc., you could have the beginning of some serious problems. The options now are to either cover up these problems with medications or try to get down to the cause and fix it before it is too late. It’s having a pebble in your shoe; at first you try and move it around by tapping your shoe, then finally you stop and take your shoe off and take the pebble out. References: 1. CRYSTAL HEALING Using Crystals to Support Your Intentions Written by Tania Marie, RMT, IARP, NAPW

he Earth is supporting humanity’s awakening to the re-discovery of ancient and forgotten healing arts, such as the utilization of crystals. Reverence and use of crystals goes back to the dawning of civilization. They have been connected with specific parts of the body and its organs for thousands of years. As members of the mineralogical kingdom, crystals are universal energies that allow one to contact and synthesize these individual energies for healing and integration. Each crystal contains their own “personality” and can be utilized in unique ways to facilitate healing. Crystals are nature’s gift to man and are found in all shapes, sizes, colors and composition. They each have a unique vibrational resonance due to their varying mineral contents, their inherent geometry and the color frequency they emit, making them powerful healing tools.

Crystal healing is a method of healing – crystals or gemstones are placed on or around the body, on the chakras (spiritual energy centers), used as reflexology tools to stimulate points on the feet, worn like jewelry, or can be placed in and around one’s home to enhance energy. They heal holistically on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels, helping to direct the flow of energy to a particular part of the body, restore balance, and ultimately cleanse by releasing and clearing blocked energy. Chakras (pronounced “shock-ras”) are Sanskrit for wheels of rotating energy flows in the ethereal body. They are in related locations within the physical body along the spinal column starting from the base of the spine, up to the crown, or top of the head. There are seven major chakras within the body where the energy flows intersect. The health of an area of the physical body and the condition of its associated chakra are interdependent, so when the chakras are blocked or cleared, the body’s state will mirror that. Each chakra corresponds with different states of consciousness, developmental stages of life, archetypal elements, body functions, colors and sounds. Crystals are capable of interacting with these energy centers within the human body because they are electromagnetic conductors that

Each crystal and gemstone embodies certain energies, colors, and elements that mirror the qualities needed to facilitate clearing and raising chakra vibrations. They have been used to realign subtle energies and dissolve disease by helping to get to the root of the issue. hat causes the face to sag and drop? The two main factors are the sun and gravity. While we can minimize our time spent in the sun, and protect our skin with sunscreen, there is very little we can do in the fight against the force of gravity. An alternative to cosmetic surgery is a microcurrent non-surgical facelift. How does micro current work? A microcurrent non-surgical facelift gently stimulates the skin and releases chemicals that restore the skin’s natural balance for a more vibrant, more youthful appearance. Low-level electrical impulses are applied to strategic locations under the skin to help firm, tone, tighten and reverse the signs of aging. The microcurrent non-surgical facelift requires no anesthesia, no recovery time, no down time and has no side effects. What are some of the effects of a microcurrent non-surgical facelift? • An increase in blood and lymph circulation • Tightening of the pores • Increased muscle tone of the face and neck • Improved skin quality • Visibly reduces wrinkles • Activates cellular renewal • Eliminates toxins A micro current non-surgical facelift can be performed in a series of treatments for best results, or can be used for spot treatments. Monthly Health Outlook:
THE SUN IN
ARIES Written By Robert Ayres
T
he Sun enters Aries on March 20. The movement of the Sun into Aries marks the Spring Equinox. The Ram is the first sign of the zodiac and the solar orb’s passage through this constellation begins a new 12-month cycle. The equinox initiates the beginning of the spring season. Rebirth and new beginnings are the major themes now. Nature comes alive with new life. The plant and animal kingdoms are enlivened with new vegetation and baby animals of all kinds. In the human kingdom, we feel a quickening of the life force and a sense of exhilaration. There is excitement at the prospect

of new possibilities and adventures. A new cycle is moving us into the unknown. The primary keyword for Aries is I Am. Of all the signs of the zodiac it is the most dedicated to self-discovery. Our sense of individuality forms the foundation of our lives. If we don’t have a strong and correct sense of self, then we will inevitably struggle in life. We should have a feeling for who we are and be able to give expression to it in a natural way. This defining of self should not be determined by society, friends or family. It should not be the result of outer definitions but rather an inner process of awakening and discovery. Inherent within a true sense of self is an awareness of purpose in our lives. This purpose gives meaning to our lives and is in an ongoing process of unfoldment. This will become a source of revelation as we mature. It is our inner compass that gives us direction in our life’s journey and is essential to keep us on the right track. It leads us to the fulfillment of our destiny. Each of us is a totally unique expression of divine will, love and wisdom. This manifests as our personal thinking, feeling and action. The conscious ongoing unfoldment of our individuality is what life is really about. Self-realization is the goal of human evolution. Aries rules this adventure of self-discovery. Mars, the planetary ruler of The Ram, is at its strength now. It embodies the archetype of the warrior and expresses through action. It is the source of our motivation, initiative, pioneering spirit and courage. Courage is one of the primary virtues of Aries and we need it in order to deal with life’s challenges. We live in interesting times and we all need to call on our inner resource of courage to effectively embrace and work through our fears. Physiologically, Aries rules the head. The brain is contained within the head and is the master control for the nervous system. The nervous system is the foundation for our consciousness. Our

physical senses receive input from the outer world and we respond through mobility and action. Our head directs us in life. Aries and Mars also express through the adrenal glands. These potent endocrine glands supply us with the energy to be aggressive and competitive. Life demands that we express ourselves in dynamic action. One of the ways that we discover who we are is through what we do. If we do not have a zest for life, we will find that we do not accomplish much. If we don’t achieve much, we will have a minimal degree of self-discovery and self-realization. Strong, healthy adrenal glands are necessary for a fulfilling life. Iron is the metal through which Aries and Mars manifest. Iron is an important element of the blood. The blood is the carrier of the spiritual I Am at the level of the physical body. The blood is also the vehicle for the hormones and secretions of the endocrine glands. It is important that we have plenty of iron and purified blood to live life effectively. Some herbs that may be helpful in this regard are burdock root, red clover, fo ti, sassafras and yellow dock. Now is the time to use these herbal supplements to tone up your system. Check with your health practitioner to see if they are appropriate for you. Enjoy! THE ABOVE IS NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN AS MEDICAL ADVICE. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL. 2009 All Rights Reserved, Robert Ayres Robert Ayres is an internationally known astrologer with over 40 years of experience. “I purchased a web back support fifteen years ago & loved it! But I left it at one of my temp jobs. I’ve tried several back support cushions since then & none of them have worked. The reason I like the web back support is that is doesn’t sink or reshape itself, it fits in any chair & it’s very portable. I was so happy to see this ad, I can’t believe I found you! I bought two, one for home & one for my job.” -Pat Olsen • Reno, NV
