appy Summer! It’s hard to believe it is already August, the summer feels like it is flying by. I hope that you and your families are finding time to enjoy the summer and the beautiful surroundings.

To start, choose to omit foods that are genetically modified, chemically processed and full of toxins. The first step would be to review the things that you eat on a daily basis and decide which you would want to eliminate and replace with healthier options. On a positive note, eating organic foods can reduce the level of pesticides you consume by 89%.

The mission of Healthy Beginning’s Magazine is to provide relevant information about healthy lifestyle choices. One topic that coincides with that is to learn as much as can about the foods we consume and what is actually in those foods.

For example, replace a sweet sugary item with a handful of organic blueberries, full of anti-aging properties and anti oxidants. Blueberries are valuable in reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s, heart disease and diabetes. Add an avocado to a meal each day. The avocado is a true super food full of vitamins K, C, B5, B6 and E. It even has more potassium than a banana. The avocado is also loaded with heart healthy monounsaturated fats.

One of the articles in this month’s issue is a book review about the infiltration of GMOs into our crops and food supply. I too am very passionate about the topic of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) and their impact to our health and the health of future generations. The use of GMO’s is part of a greater concern; the power of Monsanto to impact government decisions in relation to food, farming practices and crops. Daily, we read and hear about the increase of diabetes, autism, cancer and heart disease. Main stream media shares relatively little information about the astronomical rise of these conditions and the information related to their connection to GMOs, processed foods, pesticides, hormones and antibiotics. Ironically, the most recent health information talks about the trend towards creating drugs that are detox in nature. Meaning, the medicine of the future will be designed to help combat the effects of the toxins on our food and the environment. Fortunately, we can get started on our own efforts to create health and make choices about the kinds of foods that we want to eat and the kinds of food we want to avoid.

Another way to add to your healthy lifestyle is to support local organic farmers. There are lots of opportunities in the area to attend a farmers’ market to pick up your fresh fruits and vegetables. Our August issue is full of interesting articles regarding early cancer detection, thyroid disease, concepts to expand your thinking and delicious healthy recipes. Enjoy !

Patient Mysteries: ARE YOU THYROID DEFICIENT? Part 1

Written by Dr. William N. Clearfield, D.O.

I

n Part 1 we review two case studies illustrating common clinical presentations of thyroid disease, the anatomy and physiology of the thyroid gland, symptoms of low thyroid output and causes of thyroid disease.

August 2015 • Healthy Beginnings

An estimated 12 percent of the U.S. population will develop a thyroid condition during their lifetime. 60 percent of those patients are symptomatic but unaware of their condition.1 Two great patients presented to our office on the same day illustrating the shift in thinking from a traditional disease based medical model to a patient-centered approach looking for the root cause of disease. T.G., a 47-year-old secretary for a local construction company, presented with a ten year (10 years!) history of depression, dementia, weight gain, constipation, dry skin, hair loss, cold intolerance, hoarseness, irregular menstruation prior to menopause, muscle stiffness and pain. She complained of always feeling “on edge,” yet living life in slow motion. T.G. clearly exhibited symptoms of low thyroid output. She has sought out “at least ten doctors including two specialists,” two massage therapists, an occupational therapist, a faith healer, a hot yoga instructor, two chiropractors, a reiki master and an iridologist. “Everyone told me I was normal. They all say I'm crazy. My husband says I’m crazy. I’m anxious, stressed out, I have panic attacks, insomnia, you name it. They say there’s nothing wrong with me.” Her physical examination was “normal.” There were no lumps or bumps where there shouldn’t have been. Her blood count (hemoglobin) was 14.6 (normal 12-16), blood sugar 86 (normal <100), Thyroid Stimulating Hormone 2.39 (normal 0.45-4.5) and her cholesterol was 178. Everything is normal. (Or is it?) Later that day, L.D. a 56-year-old chiropractor presented with a six year history of severe fatigue, headaches, abdominal bloating, multiple food allergies, and a profound coldness even on a 100 degree day in summer. L.D., complained of an inability to handle stressful situations, poor memory, muscles weakness, and hair loss. He was concerned he was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease. His physical examination was likewise “normal.” His hemoglobin was 15.2, blood sugar 91, Thyroid Stimulation Hormone 6.21, and his testosterone was 578 (normal 300-1000). L.D. was told he had low thyroid function. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone is an inverse. When the level is high, one has low circulating thyroid. When the reading is low, the circulating thyroid is high. He was prescribed a synthetic thyroid preparation, did not believe the diagnosis, did not take the medication, and sought a more complex meaning for his maladies. L.D. submitted to Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Techniques (allergy testing using muscle energy techniques), colon cleanses, IV vitamin therapy, hair analysis, the abovementioned reiki and hypnosis. He sought out like-minded chiropractors, a shaman and an orthomolecular psychologist. Several concluded he was hypothyroid and he should just “take the damn synthetic pill and be done with it.” L.D. felt his life “had more meaning and he couldn’t imagine having a common, garden variety, thyroid problem.” Looking over six years of tests, it was evident early on that he was indeed, simply hypothyroid. T.G., a lay person, was repeatedly told over the ten years she

had mental health issues. Not one of her previous practitioners had looked beyond simple, everyday screenings. We performed extensive thyroid testing including antibodies, markers for T.G.'s immune cells, which somehow became confused and attacked her own tissues. T. G.’s antibodies were off the scale high, unreadable and immeasurable. (>900, normal <30). Conclusion? T.G. has autoimmune induced hypothyroidism, namely Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.

L.D., a medical practitioner, who treats patients every day, could not see his forest for the trees. (His antibodies were <5, normal). He suffered, greatly missing out on many of life’s pleasures, overthinking his easily controlled malady. The thyroid gland, a butterfly shaped organ, is located in the laryngeal prominence, i.e. the Adam’s apple, in the neck. It’s hormones, chemicals that carry messages from their organ of origin to specific cells, regulates the function of every cell in the body. The thyroid is responsible for the smooth functioning of the heart, lungs, G.I. tract, blood sugar, cholesterol production and utilization, bone, blood, and brain. The thyroid gland produces two major hormones, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) are major regulators of the growth and rate of function of other body systems. The thyroid also produces calcitonin, a hormone responsible for calcium balance and bone density. The thyroid is a “Goldilocks” hormone. We need it to be just right—not too little, not too much. It produces itself only 20% of its necessary daily requirements (100 micrograms a day of T4, 30 micrograms a day of T3). The majority (80%) of the active thyroid molecule comes from a process known as de-iodination, naturally converting T4 to T3. Adequate conversion of T4 to T3 accounts for a smooth-running system. Inadequate conversion of T4 to T3 contributes to the symptoms of low circulating thyroid.

The thyroid is such an ubiquitous organ that over 200 different symptoms can be traced to it. Common symptoms include cold intolerance, unexplained weight gain, fatigue, thinning of the hair, the outer third of the eyebrow, the skin and the nails, increased body fat, energy loss, cognitive loss, memory loss, mood disorders, lowered body temperature (never greater than 97.6 F), fluid retention, and a poor sense of well-being are all attributable to poor thyroid function. Although thyroid deficiency has traditionally been viewed as a decrease in hormone production from the aforementioned decreased conversion of T4 to T3, zinc and selenium deficiencies, adrenal insufficiency, thyroid receptor site resistance (normal blood levels, poor thyroid function), and pharmaceutical medications including amiodarone, beta blockers, dilantin, prednisone, synthetic progesterones, and lithium, a new understanding has arisen. When the underlying cause of hypothyroidism is the immune system, not the thyroid per se., and it is not addressed, standard medical treatments are not effective.2 25 percent of patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis develop poly-glandular syndromes (such as pernicious anemia, diabetes, or adrenal insufficiency) or other autoimmune diseases (such as Sjogren’s syndrome).3 In Part 2 we will review diagnosis and offer treatment modalities that include medications, supplements and dietary advice. For more information, contact Dr. William N. Clearfield at (775) 359-1222. See ad on this page.

THAT DIDN’T HURT

THAT MUCH! Written by Dr. Tony Jensen

W

hen you're first involved in an auto accident, have a fall, or some type of injury, you sometimes don't feel a lot of symptoms initially. This is due to the adrenalin flow in the body, or the changes in the tissues. That’s why most people think, "that didn't hurt that much.” Or DID IT?.

You could be missing some very important tissue changes that are going on in your body that sometimes don't have much pain or bad symptoms associated with them at first. Like in the case of whiplash, symptoms can appear immediately, or can develop over the next few days, weeks, or even months after the accident. When your neck is forced to move past its normal range of motion, this is called "Whiplash." This unnatural and forceful movement affects the muscles and ligaments in the neck, stretching and potentially tearing them. The discs between the vertebrae can bulge, tear, or rupture, and vertebrae can be forced out of their normal position, reducing your range of motion. The spinal cord and nerve roots can get stretched, irritated, and "choked." Some of the most common symptoms associated with whiplash or neck injuries are neck and upper back pain, shoulder or arm pain, headaches, dizziness, vision disturbances, numbness and/ or tingling in arms or face, stiffness and tenderness, and low back pain.

According to Dr. Michelle Bean, D.C., “ironically, the same mechanism that creates whiplash in less than 0.005 seconds, can be created at zero miles per hour (mph), over a prolonged period of time. Whiplash at zero mph is a result of poor posture. When we slump while seated, it causes our shoulders to roll forward and the mid-back to round out, the head and neck are pushed forward. In an attempt to maintain balance we automatically extend the head back even further causing that abnormal S-shaped curve of the neck as seen in sudden whiplash. Only now, we maintain this posture hours on end, day after day. Over time, this will result in muscle lengthening adaptations and altered normal biomechanics. The body continues to compensate by restricting motion of injured muscles and joints. All these changes cause secondary myofascial pain, which leads to referred pain, typically in the neck, shoulders, and between the shoulder blades. Initially, most people will experience this as that stress or tension in the neck and shoulders that we all know too well. However, it’s important to remember that this tension is usually a secondary symptom at this point. The main cause is an alteration in posture, creating adhesions around the joints of the spine.” So, we can see that poor posture can slowly create changes over time. Whiplash, falls and other types of injuries all affect the tissues as well. If these changes are not addressed, the body will try and make changes to decrease the irritation or problem as much as it can, because it doesn't like being in discomfort. Then, if those abnormal adaptations are ignored, over time, the body could be set up to have earlier than normal degenerative problems, as well as arthritis and chronic pain symptoms. It is, unfortunately, a common story. A person goes in to see a chiropractor months (to years) after an injury they felt didn't do much damage to them, but are now having problems. The chiropractor takes in their history, performs an exam, takes x-rays, and then sees early stages of degeneration due to the old injury. The patient is then treated with proper protocol of adjustments, specific home exercises to assist with the tissue changes, and home traction to restore the neck curve if needed. In most cases, the patient is brought back to a state of pre-injury and normal health. For more information, contact Tony Jensen at (775) 323-1222

The Nature of Homeopathy Written by Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

A

fter practicing Homeopathic and Integrative Medicine for 40 years, I am continually in awe of its power and complexities. Homeopathy is based not only on the patient’s symptoms but also on their personality. It is what I wished psychiatric drugs could have been from my early days in psychiatric drug research at the Stanford Research Ward at the Palo Alto VA Hospital. Remedies are tailored to the individual’s nature and symptoms without the awful side effects of many psychiatric drugs. Of course, homeopathy also treats every imaginable human illness and personality. Modern homeopathy was first discovered by German physician Samuel Hahnemann in the late 1700s, when he was commissioned by the king to treat malaria in his soldiers who were fighting in the swamps. He noted that if one took large doses of quinine it caused relapsing fevers and joint pain just like malaria. He reasoned that if a large dose of quinine could cause these symptoms that a very small dose might reverse the symptoms and, indeed, it proved to be true. There are now more than 1,000 homeopathic remedies, thankfully, twenty or so remedies are called the polycrest and are most frequently used. Remedies are located in a homeopathic repertory, a large book or on a computer, which is used to match remedies with the patient’s condition. Standard dosing techniques may be used and the EAV computer which I have written about in these pages makes dosing more accurate and sure. Because the remedies are diluted infinitesimally beyond the likelihood of there being even one molecule of the original substance Western medicine has been at odds with homeopathy for over 200 years—starting in the days when allopathic doctors, regular MDs, were still prescribing gross, poisonous lead, arsenic and mercury preparations for their patients. There is no toxicity to homeopathic prescribing outside an occasional, short lived, aggravations of symptoms. One hundred thousand patients per year die from pharmaceutical drugs and 400,000 are hospitalized. Go online and look up homeopathic research studies if you are inclined. There are many books

14

on the subject especially from Switzerland and Germany1. Wikipedia issues a flat condemnation of homeopathy yet it is used by 95% of French doctors. It is the largest medical system in India and many other countries. How and Why Homeopathic Medicines Work: New Evidence, New Results and Provocative Results. Dana Ullman is a national and international spokesperson for homeopathy. Currently residing in Berkeley, CA he is the founder and owner of Homeopathic Educational Services and has written 11 books on homeopathy and co-published 35 books. He is currently a columnist for the Huffington Post magazine and has contributed chapters in medical textbooks and many articles in the mainstream and peer-review press. His book, The Homeopathic Revolution: Why Famous People and Cultural Heroes Choose Homeopathy First,2 is a fascinating review of the history of homeopathy and the hundreds of famous people who used and currently use and support homeopathy. His book and lectures focus on many supportive references for homeopathy. Nanopharmacology is explained and supported as a rational mechanism for homeopathy. “Certain species of moths can smell pheromones two miles away but only of their own species, an example of resonance which is a key to homeopathic prescribing. Beta endorphins are known to modulate natural killer cell activity in dilutions of 10-18. Interlukin 1 has been found to exhibit increased T-cell clone proliferation at 10-19 concentration. Pheromones will result in hyper-sensitive reaction when as little as a single molecule is received.” If you like homeopathic medicine you are in good company. Ullman extensively documents homeopathic patients and supporters. Hahnemann is the only physician to have a statute in Washington, DC. Read his book to get the full account of the following supporters of homeopathy including the following: Charles Darwin, Sir William Osler, MD, Charles Menninger, MD, William and Charles Mayo, C Everett Koop, MD, Sarah Bernhardt, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr, Marlene Dietrich, John Wayne, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jane Seymour, Vanessa Williams, Alan Bates, Priscilla Presley, Kim Cattrall, Ashley Judd, Jennifer Aniston, Ludwig van Beethoven, Fredric Chopin, Nicolo Paganini, Robert Schumann, Richard Wagner, Samuel Barber, Yehudi Menuhin, Dizzy Gillespie, Ravi Shankar, Tina Turner, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Cher, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Paul Gauguin, Antoni Gaudi, Karl Lagerfield, Vidal Sassoon, Abraham Lincoln, Presidents John Tyler, Rutherford B. hen you think of certain beliefs or attitudes you hold, do you ever think about where they came from? Did you decide on them yourself or did they come from parents, the church or the culture? For most of us, we picked many of them up along the way because of what we were taught. That’s certainly natural, but it’s not beneficial to mindlessly hold onto them no matter what results they have. Certain attitudes or beliefs that worked for our parents or grandparents may not work for us. New discoveries are coming out all the time…new ways of looking at things, new ways of researching ideas and solving problems. In fact, many of

the challenges we face today did not exist for past generations. Whether we agree with these changes or not, we must deal with them in order to function in today’s world. You might ask yourself regarding a certain conviction or belief, “Where did I get that? Why do I believe that?” You will probably get a memory of someone stating that belief. Then you can ask yourself, “Is that serving me now in my life?” If it isn’t, you can learn how to let it go. A belief is just a thought we keep on thinking, so anything that was repeated over and over as we were growing up, whether it was true or not, is embedded deeply into the subconscious mind.

ALTERED GENES,

TWISTED TRUTH

How the Venture to Genetically Engineer Our Food Has Subverted Science, Corrupted Government and Systematically Deceived the Public By Steven M. Druker Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt, PLR teven Drucker is a public interest attorney who initiated a lawsuit that forced the FDA to open its files on genetically engineered foods. This suit exposed how the agency had covered up the warnings of its own scientists about the risks, lied about the facts and then allowed those foods onto the market in violation of federal law. This book presents clear and convincing evidence that genetically engineered (GMO) foods have not been adequately tested to ensure that they are safe to eat. Many independent bio-tech scientists are worried that there has been literally no independent research on the safety of genetically engineered foods. What little research has been done has shown that these foods can cause a number of health problems ranging from allergies to tumor growth and

carcinomas in multiple organs and tissues. Monsanto has known since 1981 that Glyphosate, the active ingredient in their herbicide Roundup, causes cancer, yet over one billion pounds a year is still allowed to be sprayed on our food crops, which results in the average American eating several hundred pounds of glyphosate-contaminated food every year. Monsanto patented this poison as an antibiotic even though they knew it damages your gut flora, chelates vitamins and minerals as well as disrupts bacteria-manufacturing amino acids. Druker’s book further explains how chunks of genetic material jump all over the place once they are inserted into plants or animals and there is no predicting where they will go or what they will do. Since GMO foods aren’t labeled, we end up consuming them without knowing. This author shows that almost all the corn and soybean products sold in this country are GMOs, plus most of the sugar (from sugar beets) as well as wheat. Even though genetically modified foods are banned in many other countries, they continue to be sold to Americans. He goes on to explain that there is an ongoing feud between the US and Europe regarding GMOs because we want to sell our Frankenfoods and they don’t want to buy them. The GMO seed industry has a cozy relationship with government regulators (FDA, USDA, EPA and

18

Congress) and that’s why they’ve been able to pull off this massive fraud. It’s gone on for decades, with the help of many independent scientists who are too afraid of their livelihoods to speak out. We’ve been taken in by the coordinated efforts of corporate “scientists,” Congress and our own regulatory agencies. This author explains that the Big Four GMOsupporting corporations (Monsanto, Novartis, Dow and Du Pont) have deep pockets and don’t mind spending big money on lobbyists in order to reach their goals. Imagine the enormous profits they would make if they were able to control the world’s food supply through genetically modifying most of the seeds. Employees of Monsanto who have quit the company say that is exactly their long term goal. India has finally fought back against Monsanto, refusing to buy their seeds, which are engineered to produce only one crop. Therefore, farmers are unable to save part of their crop for the next planting. They must buy Monsanto’s expensive seeds yet again, plus they are pressured to buy the deadly herbicide Roundup as well as insecticides made by the Big Four. If the seeds blow over into neighboring farmers’ fields, Monsanto sues those farmers (who didn’t want GMO seeds to begin with) for “stealing” their seeds. Great swaths of India now have laws against using GMO seeds, to protect their farmers’ livelihood as well as the health of the citizenry. Many countries in Europe have also banned GMO seeds as well as the insecticides manufactured by the Big Four. Over 100,000 farmers in Europe who use bees to pollinate their crops are pressuring their governments to ban Roundup. Bees are dying all over the world because of the overuse of herbicides applied to crops as well as pesticides embedded within the GMO seeds. That becomes alarming when you realize that a third of the world’s food supply is dependent upon bees for pollination. In experiments which were kept from the public and unearthed by this author, genetic engineering of plants and animals has produced some grotesque results. These same scientists have even inserted human DNA into both plants and animals. Or a virus may be used to inject a desired gene into the seed. The virus itself may lie inert for a while, then become active. Regarding this type of reckless combining of DNA, many responsible scientists are alarmed. They feel much of this experimentation is unethical because we don’t know what these wild combinations will produce. Just because we can experiment in this manner doesn’t mean we should. Reviewer’s note: What do German beekeepers, the Pope and Neil Young have in common? They’ve all recently come out against GMOs; the Pope in an Encyclical letter and Neil Young in a new album entitled The Monsanto Years. This excellent book is available locally or online.

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment.

CONSPIRING WITH

The Universe FOR CHANGE Written by Kate Colby Nelson

T

he idea of an interactive universe and divine intelligence that interacts with individualized intelligence has been written about in many sacred texts and is universally considered a spiritual principle. So what is this Law and how can we use it? How can we connect more deeply with our innate intelligence and step into the support of a loving and generous universe? The first step to using this spiritual principle to live with a greater expression of ourselves is to realize that we are always one with this intelligence, we cannot be separate from the “Thing” itself. We are created in, sustained by, and return to this intelligence, we live and breath and have our being in and through this intelligence.

“As New Thought philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.”

20

August 2015 • Healthy Beginnings

Just as there are physical laws there are also spiritual laws, and a nature to consider when working on making changes is that the Law of this creative intelligence is impersonal. We can liken it to soil ready for a seed to be planted in it. If you plant a tomato seed in the soil you are going to get a tomato plant. Taking this analogy a little further; if the soil is the Law, that impersonal part of the creative process, than we can think of the seed as our consciousness-our thoughts, and the plant as the body or manifested outcome of the seed. So here we have consciousness interacting through our beliefs, patterns, and habits, with the Law, and producing the ‘effects’ of our lives. So thoughts do eventually become things, they become situations and conditions, they materialize to form the realization of our mind. They become our relationships, our work, our creativity, our health, and all of the outward expressions of our inward atmosphere of thought. If we put a tomato seed into the soil we will yield a tomato plant, if we want to have carrots then we need to plant carrot seeds. We cannot plant a tomato seed and expect carrots. We cannot continue thinking one way and expect a different result. And here is where it gets really good. Say there is something that you have

been wanting to change about your life, you don’t want tomatoes, you want carrots, there is a calling within you to get into alignment with your true nature, that calling is the “Thing” itself communicating it’s desire to expand into some greater good, in you, and through you. Once you identify that this requires making some changes, the same Law that produced what you want to change in your life will create the change that you desire, it’s impersonal! The divine intelligence is both love and law, as love it pushes us towards our good and the Law makes it all possible. Whether you are working with personal self-inquiry or working with a practitioner, discovering the atmosphere of your thinking, your beliefs, and hidden agendas will help you to move in the direction of the change you desire more effectively. Lastly, when you are clear that your desired change is moving you in the direction of love and alignment you can release the need to know ‘how’ it’s going to happen. The Law is always operating and divine intelligence already has within itself the path, the people, the circumstances, and the unfoldment. Just as we release the ‘how’ in the law of gravity and fully accept it’s action, we can release the ‘how’ in the Law of creativity and accept it’s action in our lives. As

New Thought philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” For more information, contact Kate Colby Nelson at info@seedsofradiance.com See ad on this page.

Minimally Invasive Spine Institute in 2013. “Now, 90% of our spine surgery cases can be performed with a minimally invasive approach. Only major deformity and trauma need conventional open procedures,” explains Dr. James Lynch, founder of SpineNevada. Accurate and timely diagnosis of back and neck pain is especially cumbersome because of the complexity of many spine conditions. The optimal treatment plan will vary greatly based on the spine condition. Not only will an accurate diagnosis prevent unnecessary treatments and healthcare spending— but it also means a faster return to an active lifestyle for the affected patient. Due to the complexity of spine diagnosis, the long term vision of SpineNevada’s center of excellence was to combine advanced diagnostic services under the spine center umbrella. In 2015, SpineNevada introduced the InMotion Diagnostics line of advanced radiology services. InMotion Diagnostics includes open InMotion MRI, a weightbearing MRI that provides superior diagnostic capabilities compared to

24

that of traditional MRI. A natural, standup position during MR imaging increases diagnostic accuracy for musculoskeletal conditions. InMotion Diagnostics will soon expand imaging offerings to include Dynamic X-rays and Vertebral Motion Analysis. Vertebral motion

analysis is the first new quantitative spine imaging test in over 75 years. While it’s common for healthcare providers to talk about quality, it’s rare for them to track statistics, and more rare to publish and reveal their data on the subject of patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes. SpineNevada is the only spine center in Nevada to publish a Clinical Outcome Report Card for referral sources and be included in SpineCenterNetwork.com, the only national listing of credentialed spine centers. The center of excellence concept in place at SpineNevada follows evidence-based guidelines to help foster a faster, more permanent recovery for spine patients — usually without surgery. For more information about specialized physical therapy for relief of back or neck pain, please call 775.348.8885 or visit SpineNevada.com See ad on back page.

CANCER?

Written by Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

ancer screening tests are invaluable tools that, if used properly, can give an early warning that a cancer has started growing in the body.

The problem with many of the conventional tools is the toxicity that comes along with them. Studies in England have shown conclusively that regular mammograms over time cause an increased incidence of cancer due to the radiation. Other tests, such as CAT scans, bone scans, X-rays and PET scans, all involve differing levels of radiation. It is even controversial as to weather a biopsy of a suspicious lump will contribute to the cancer spreading. What is a person to do? Fortunately there are some new tests and panels of tests that are increasingly available around the world and are able to detect cancer years before the clinical lump or bump stage of cancer has developed. The value of these tests is that finding the abnormal results early enough helps patients begin taking their health more seriously, motivating them to make necessary changes in diet, exercise, elimination of sugar and smoking, detoxification and immune support. When these simple strategies are started long before the detectable lump stage of cancer has developed, they permitted the cancer screening test abnormalities to revert back to safe, healthy levels. First, a simple blood test for a specific enzyme called “nagalase”, which is secreted by cancer cells, can be sent to a lab in Holland. An elevated level reveals a high suspicion for cancer somewhere in the body.

Tahoe Wellness

Second, a test called the “Oncoblot” is another blood test that is done in Indiana. It was developed by the former head of chemistry at Purdue University. It can not only determine if there is cancer present but it can also tell which organ it is growing in. A third approach is the use of what is called a “CaProfile”. It uses an extensive panel of conventional tests and established cancer markers to determine the chances of developing, or the actual presence of, many types of cancer. It is time to recognize that cancer can be detected in an early enough stage that the true healing power of the body can be harnessed and given the support it needs to eliminate the “disease” and restore health. hen you are just putting your first steps out in the new culinary world of living plant-based foods, you may feel a bit uncertain because everything you once took for granted is now being questioned. Your foundation is shaking. You are thinking back of all the lusciousness of sweet memories, scents at the table that bring up images from your childhood and you wonder how to ban what you once loved so much from your life. We all eat with our memories. That’s why it is often so difficult to let go of certain foods. Raw food helps you to create emotional freedom by building a new relationship with what you eat and thus, with yourself. Desserts are the ideal way to have a comfortable transition phase from eating cooked to raw while enjoying the pleasures of life. This stylish and delicious cake will not only fire up your joy in your pure kitchen, but also seduce the cynics around your table without another explanation about your “rabbit food.” Present your classy, sexy chocolate cake and only reveal that it hasn’t seen any fire after your guests say; “Oh my, can I have this recipe?’

here is something sweet and endearing about tiny pink and white yarrow flowers, or Achillea Millefolium. Some say the name Achillea is attributed to the Achilles made infamous by the Trojan War, who used the herb to treat battle wounds of soldiers. Others say the name comes from the person who discovered the plant, who happened to be name Achilles. Either way evidence of human's relationship to can be traced back at least 60,000 years!

• Disinfects cuts and scrapes • A hot cup of Yarrow tea helps treat winter cold and flu as it increases perspiration to help remove toxins and reduce fever • Works as an expectorant for coughs. • Crushed Yarrow leaves can help stop a nosebleed •As an essential oil Yarrow can be used to stop bleeding

Yarrow Oil Tear or cut Yarrow into one inch pieces, pack in a jar, fill to the top.Next, fill the jar with organic, cold pressed coconut oil. Close the lid tightly and put the jar in the sun. Let it sit for six weeks. (Be sure to put a plate under the jar in case there is any leakage). When the six weeks is complete, strain the oil mixture through a cheese cloth, remove the herb. During straining, you can transfer the oil to another decanter for use. Yarrow improves peripheral circulation by dilating the blood vessels which makes the oil effective to use on bruises, varicose veins and other stagnant blood issues.
